Did you know that explosion of Krakatoa (or Krakatau) volcano once changed the climate around the globe? The atmospheric effects made incredible yet unexpected sunsets all over Europe and the United States. This Krakatoa tour will take you to what’s remaining of the volcano centuries after the unfortunate explosion . And just nearby is Ujung Kulon National Park, home to diverse wildlife, but most importantly the endangered one-horned Javan rhinoceros . It is the largest animals on Java Island and the second largest in Indonesia after the Asian Elephant. There are several islands in this archipelago but during this Krakatoa tour you will mostly spend the time exploring the forest and underwater life around Peucang and Handeleum Islands.

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Pickup: Hotel in Jakarta, Java (CGK)

Itinerary: Krakatoa Tour

Day 1: jakarta - carita beach - krakatoa - peucang island    ▼.

Rise early and shine! We will pick you up from your hotel in Jakarta at 5 AM, then drive to the West coast of Carita beach approximately 3 hours to being our Krakatoa tour. On arrival, have breakfast then we will boat the fast boat heading to Sunda strait.

When the Earth once exploded…

We will be heading to the deserted, active volcano island of Krakatoa (also known as Krakatau). It is 35 miles away to witness the remaining of the biggest explosion ever recorded in history of mankind. After about 1,5 hours on the boat, keep your eyes open and you may see a Frigate Bird soaring high overhead, licking its scissor-like tail as it changes direction with hardly a flap of its wings. You will almost certainly spot flying fish making their long low glides above the sea’s surface. Some of them “fly” for tens of metres, and are airborne for several second, dolphins often come to greet the boat and play alongside it or in front of the prow.

Landing at the beach of Anak Krakatau which is a smaller volcano near Krakatoa and climb up to the first top of volcano. Step your foot on it, searching closely the minerals (volcanic bomb, lava) which were thrown up through its crater from the bottom of the earth. From the top, you can see the wonderful beautiful sea view of Krakatoa archipelago. Pristine seas, green vegetation, and apocalyptic porous red-volcanic rocks dropping all the way from the crater deep into the sea.

Moving on the Ujung Kulon…

Back to the boat for rest/lunch and then continue for cruise to Peucang Island on the Ujung Kulon National Park approx. 2,5 hours. Peucang is truly a secluded paradise located at the most western edge of Java. Surrounded by soft white sandy beach, clear blue waters, and enchanting coral reefs, Peucang promises serenity for whoever steps on its sands. Peucang is home to a variety of species of wild animals such as monkeys, hornbills, monitor lizards, wild boars, toucans, sea hawks, and more. The most notable of these is the barking deer that are found abundantly around the island. Arrival at the lodge at sunset. Dinner will be served in the same lodge, the rest of the evening is free.

Mea ls : Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Accommodation : Lodge in Peucang Island

DAY 2: EXPLORING PEUCANG ISLAND       ▼

After breakfast, we are ready to explore Peucang Island. You will trek to the Karang Copong (North of Peucang island) passes through primary forest. Also, you can see kind of huge trees like Ficus or Liana trees. Sometimes we could see common wild animals such as wild pig, peacock, hornbill and others. After an hour trekking, we’ll take a rest at Karang Copong. We go back to the lodge to have lunch, then continue to Citerjun coral reef for snorkeling to see variety of tropical colorful fish. Among some of the dwellers of Peucang Island underwater realm are butterfly fish, angel fish, clown fish, cockatoo fish, and a whole lot more. In the late afternoon, we continue to Cidaon grassing ground to see common wildlife animals such as; wild bull, wild pig, peacock, stay overnight (dinner).

Meals : Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day 3: PEUCANG ISLAND - HANDELEUM ISLAND - JAKARTA - END OF TRIP       ▼

After breakfast, we continue (cruising) to Handeleum Island, situated among a group of small islands just off the north eastern coast of the Ujung Kulon peninsula. Exploring the Cigenter river (by canoe), Ujung Kulon National Park is an unbelievably fantastic experience. It’s remarkably peaceful and lovely here, yet full of primeval – rainforest and trees that have fallen into the river. The rich colors of the place are so wonderful, and the strong tropical sun creates great pools of mottled light on the river’s surface.

We will be going back to Carita beach, but on the way we will stop to Badul Island Just offshore here is a tiny, sandy island surrounded by nice reef. Corals grow around with the variety of both hard and soft. Visibility during our snorkeling can be up to 8 meters. There are schools of bannerfish, angelfish, surgeonfish, clownfish, batfish, butterfly fish and fusiliers inhabit the reef, and some bright nudibranchs. Late afternoon, back to Carita beach then transfer back to your hotel Jakarta.

Thank you for enjoying this Krakatoa tour with Come2Indonesia. Sampai jumpa!

When is the best time of the year to do this tour?

Our favourite time for travel in Indonesia is between April to October. Although Indonesia is a great year-round destination, offering memorable experiences for all kinds of adventures. July to August are the peak summer months.

In West to Central part of the weather is delightfully warm and it’s a popular time for travellers to visit for holidays. Whilst if you wish to travel from October to April, the Eastern part Indonesia, like Banda and Raja Ampat, would be the best option.

If you wish to have a relaxing journey in Indonesia with less crowds, the shoulder months of April to June and September to October are ideal and slightly more economic. If you must travel in ‘high season’ but want to avoid the crowd, worry not. There are numbered of unbeaten track in Indonesia ready to be explored.

To anyone interested in natural processes, Krakatau trip is one of the most fascinating areas in the World. The cataclysmic eruption of 1883 captures the imagination. And spectacular volcanic activity continues to the present. To those interested in biology in the way Islands are colonized by plants and animals, not only the island from which life was eradicated by the 1883 Eruption, but also the new island of Anak Krakatau tour the area holds a unique attraction.

In the past this group of tour Krakatoa trip is a volcano that high as 200 m, but with the occurrence of the eruption has break into three parts which later on known Rakata island, Long Island, and Island Seretung. Once that happens more eruptions on the seabed so bring 2 small volcanic island of Rakata are united mountain Perbuatan and Mount Danan. Krakatoa: The Perfect Escape From Jakarta

' src=

The reef was a kaleidoscope of colors, oranges, reds and blues. A shoal of small fish flashed in front of my eyes and then darted out of my vision. This was my second day in Krakatoa. I had left the skyscrapers of Jakarta behind me the day before to spend a relaxing weekend surrounded by the beauty of nature. As I rose back up to take a deep breath of fresh air I knew that I had made the right decision.

Krakatoa, or in Indonesian Krakatau, is a volcanic island located between Sumatera and Java. The volcano is most well known for the large eruption of 1883, but is more recently famous as a popular tourist destination. The marine park surrounding Krakatoa offers some of the best diving in West Java (and it’s only a few hours from Jakarta).

Jakarta Krakatoa Tour

If you happen to be in Jakarta for a few days on business (or just for pleasure) then a trip to Krakatoa can be the perfect break. In fact, Krakatoa is one of the best trips that you can do from Jakarta. Within three hours of leaving the city you can be relaxing on a boat enjoying the morning sunshine and listening to the lapping waves of the ocean.

As a tourist you have a choice of two options. If you’re rushed then you can actually visit Krakatoa on a day trip from the city. Alternatively, if you have a bit more time, and you really want to relax, you can arrange a two-day one-night tour of Krakatoa. Whichever option you choose you’ll be starting from the same place. Let me tell you a bit more about the tour.

Getting There

Jakarta to carita.

Getting to Krakatoa means waking up very early in the morning. If you plan to take the one-day tour then you will need to wake up at 5am. The two-day tour on the other hand starts at 8am, which will give you a few hours more sleep. A chauffeured car will come and pick you up from your hotel for the first leg of the journey to Carita, a small port on the Sunda Strait.

It’s a three and a half hour journey from Jakarta to Carita along main roads. There’s not much to see for most of the journey to Carita so going back to sleep in the car is always an option. The schedule for the one and two-day trips to Krakatoa changes after you arrive at Anjer harbour. If you are on the one-day tour you catch the speedboat direct to Krakatoa.

Carita to Krakatoa

The journey from Anjer Harbour to Krakatau takes about 90 minutes. You’ll take the fast boat, which is great if you have motion sickness (I didn’t feel very good the first time I visited Krakatoa on a slow boat). With the wind in your hair and the warm rays of the sun you can just relax and enjoy the journey and the spectacular views.

For the two-day tour things are a bit more relaxed. You set off from the harbor at around 12 and head towards Rakata Island, for a nice swim and some snorkeling around the coral reefs. After some snorkeling it’s time to return to the beach for some tasty food. Once lunch is over you cruise to Krakatoa.

Things to Do

Hiking krakatoa.

If you are on the two-day tour then the first thing you’ll do when you arrive on Krakatoa is setup the campsite for the evening. Once the tent is setup (and the sun is lower in the sky), it’s time to hike Krakatoa.

The beginning of the trek cuts through thick jungle. As you come to the main slope of the volcano the vegetation disappears. The slope is made up of small stones and sand and the climb to the top is a hard slow walk. The view from the first peak of Anak Krakatoa (the Child of Krakatoa as the volcano is known) is impressive.

Krakatoa is the tallest point in the surrounding area and from the top you can look over the blue ocean and the lush green islands that surround Krakatoa.

After enjoying the view from the top of Krakatoa and taking some photos it’s time to hike back down to the boat for my favorite part of the tour; the snorkeling. I promise that you’ll enjoy this part. It’s a great way to relax after the hot climb to the top of the volcano.

If you are taking the two-day tour you’ll be doing plenty of snorkeling on the second day. You’ll have the evening to yourself and can relax and enjoy camping on an isolated volcano with a sky full of stars above your head, before snorkeling in the morning.

Rakata Island and Cabe Lagoon

Snorkelling around Cabe Lagood and Rataka Island is really special. Within minutes of entering the water you will see anemones, trumpet fish, starfish and beautiful coral. It’s a really great spot for diving and snorkelling and you’ll have plenty of time to explore reefs.

Once you’ve had your fill of snorkeling it’s time to do everything in reverse. The speedboat will take 90 minutes to bring you back to Anjer Harbor. Your driver will pick you up in the private car for the journey back to Jakarta. Once back in the city the driver drops you off at your hotel.

Final Thoughts

krakatoa is a nice adventure and the perfect break from the Big Dorian. A visit to the volcano combines the chance to see some of the best coral reefs in West java and do some easy hiking. I’ve done the tour myself and it’s definitely something that I’d recommend to friends.

Have you ever climbed a volcano? Share your experience with me.

"I am convinced that I couldn't have found any better tour option to discover these magnificent volcanoes of Indonesia" (Aravind P. about the Volcanoes of East Java tour )

Bromo strongly degassing at sunrise, September 2016 (image: Aravind P.)

"Hi Tom and Ingrid, Hope you guys are doing fine, perhaps busy with some volcanic adventures!. I came back to Switzerland well after a great holiday in Indonesia. ... ...This was certainly a superb tour and wonderful exploration of the active volcanoes of east Java within the limits of time and possibility of all that can be done. Galih did a great job in guiding me well throughout the trip. He was very flexible, open to requests and definitely gave a great company. More so, I enjoyed all those wonderful discussions on Volcanoes with him. It was certainly a very educative trip for me , but all the more a big event in watching a real lava rock fall/partial flow after Semeru's strombolian explosion. ... wow, what a spectacular setting!. I am now even more enthusiastic to explore more volcanoes in the future. I have some wonderful moments to remember from the entire tour . I am convinced that I couldn't have found any better tour option to discover these magnificent volcanoes of Indonesia. Sincere thanks to the company and Galih and Ganz herzclichen Dank zu Tom and Ingrid! ... ... I now know whom to approach for serious volcanic explorations and ... I am sure to contact you guys again sometime in the future :-). Good luck for volcano discovery! best, Aravind" (Aravind P. from Switzerland, about his private Volcanoes of East Java tour in September 2016 )

"a trip of a lifetime" ( Krakatau to Bali )

"Hi Tom, Just want to let you know, that I had a trip of a lifetime, it was everything that I dreamed and even more , Galith was a great guide and we got on well, the volcanoes are out of this world , I got lots of footage, both photos and stills, I've just started producing a short holiday video with timelapses and movie footage, I will share that with you guys. I'm looking forward to the next! " (Chris K, UK, about the Krakatau to Bali tour of July-August 2016 .

...a wonderful trip with an excellent guide... ( Volcanoes of East Java tour )

"Dear Ingrid, I'm sitting here in a coffee bar on Kuta beach walk and fill the time between two espressi to write these few lines about my trip. I enjoyed it very much. Organisation, accommodation and transfers went well. Galih was guiding with a lot of passion, competence and patience. Especially Krakatau was one of the highlights. Unfortunatly Ijien was closed due to vulcanic activities. But apart from that, a wonderful trip with an excellent guide. Thank you (Thomas N. from Germany, on his private October 2015 which was customised with an extension to Krakatau)

a marvelous trip that exceeded even my high expectations

"Tom, now my wife and I are at home after our From Krakatao to Bali trip and I want to thank you for a great experience. It was a marvelous trip that exceeded even my high expectations . Some comments: a) Galih was an excellent guide both in terms of trekking volcanoes and giving us an insight into Indonesian culture . b) The drivers, especially the first one (Danny?), was exceptional in smoothly and safely navigating the maze of cars and motorbikes. c) My initial concerns (based on Internet comments) about the Batavia (now De Rivier) Hotel in Jakarta were misplaced. This hotel is very good for its price, and it provides comfort and a unique atmosphere. I am glad we stayed there. d) The itinerary was thoughtfully planned and well executed . Emphasis on early morning departures for good light and diminished crowds was very appropriate. e) Having hammocks on Krakatau was most welcome. It was much better than sleeping in the tent, and to my great surprise, there were no (or very few) mosquitoes or other biting insects. f) On the first night we were the only tourists on Krakatau, and the morning walk up the volcano was a real pleasure. On the second (weekend) night there were already many people camping there, and the walk on the following day would not have been as pleasant. Keeping away from weekends on Krakatau is indeed very desirable. g) The Ijen Resort was a highlight of the trip. It is one of the most beautifully located hotels we have ever encountered over many decades of world travel. h) Although the last hotel on Bali was fine and its location did not affect us, it is not on the beach as the trip outline on the web indicates. Had we expected to have a great beach-experience, we would have been disappointed. i) We were surprised about the few American volcano tourists. You may use us references, if you wish. With appreciation and best wishes, Peter" (Peter K., about the Krakatau to Bali tour)

"The tour was excellent, exceeded all expectations." ( Krakatau to Bali photo tour )

"Hi Tom, I am finally home . The tour was excellent, exceeded all expectations. Galih made the trip very interesting and was a pleasure to know. He kept us informed on everything and every where we went. I hope to catch up with him again. Thanks for organising such a great tour, it will have lasting memories . Cheers Vic" (from from Bridgetown, Australia about the Krakatau to Bali photo tour )

Group on Bromo

" We returned from our trip to Bromo and Ijen on Sunday evening. This is the first time now that I can sit to my computer and - believe me - my very first act is to write to you about our trip. First off the overall opinion of my family is that this tour was one of the best in our lives. We visited many beautiful places in exceptionally good weather and with a very professional and caring tour guide Galih. I've been living here in Indonesia for one and a half year and I've learned that timing and information handling is a bit strange here for a European. But this time it was quite different. I got immediate responses to my SMSs and emails from Galih, his planning and execution of our days were just flawless. They were very helpful to us, he explained everything in details, always adjusted the pacing of the day to our experience level, supplied us food snacks and drinks in the right time. Keep up the great operation!! Best regards: Gyorgy" (Hungary, Volcanoes of East Java tour )

"The trip was superb..." (Richard H., Krakatau to Bali tour )

"Hello Tom: just got back from Java this morning. The trip was superb and I just wanted to tell you how much we appreciated Andi and Galih who stepped in when Andi became sick. Everyone has an excellent visit and learnt a great deal. Krakatua and Ijen were my personal highlights. Best wishes Dick" (Richard H., Australia)

"...most amazing tour" ( Volcanoes of Java tour )

" Just a quick email to say thank you for what was the most amazing tour (Volcanoes of Java) in August . Galih was an informative and helpful guide - he was incredibly knowledgeable and catered to all our needs. We were able to experience every volcano we had time for (sacrificed some sleep to fit in an extra couple!) and it was well worth it. The highlight was most definitely seeing lava bubbling on the floor of Merapi crater - something to tick off the bucket list! I rarely go on holiday and feel such a sense of achievement at the end of it. As a Geography teacher, this was a dream come true and would not hesitate to recommend VolcanoDiscovery to anybody - thank you so much. Both of you were incredibly helpful in your email correspondence prior to the tour and I received my gas mask well in time. I hope to travel with your company again in the future." (Tina P., Coventry, UK)

Inside the crater of Krakatau

"HI Tom, ... I just wanted to give you some feed-back on my recent trip: Volcanoes of Java: 8-24 July 2012. My son Zakkary & I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. We feel that your guide, Andi did a wonderful job and represented your company extremely well. You've got a good guy there! Little surprises like including some beer with many meals and a T shirt are very appreciated. I would highly recommend your company and hope, when I can find the time to perhaps use your services in Vanuatu at some stage. Thanks once again, David" (Australia)

Dear ###VD### Team, after returning from Java / Bali, I'd like to send you a a quick report about our trip. Marita and I felt super well on the tour from the very first day until the end. Andi took great care of Marita and could almost read every wish from her lips. Despite her pregnancy, she could enjoy the tour and would not have liked to miss a single day. I got to know Andi as extremely caring and responsible tour guide, one who also has great competence in photography - something rare to find! His enthousiastic way to show us Indonesia and the beauty of volcanoes is contagious from the first moment and makes wanting for MORE! Marita und I would like to thank you and your team very warmly for the great tour. As a side note, we appreciated a lot that the maximum number of participants was set to only 6, which made for a very pleasant experience of the whole trip. Many greetings Dietmar and Marita

...what a great time we had...

"Hi Tom We are now back from our holiday in Indonesia. Just wanted to drop you a message to say what a great time we had with Andi. The blue flames of Kawah Ijen were really a special sight to see, I'm amazed its not more nown as a tourist destination. Almost all the people we spoke to at Ijen during the day didn't know what wonders can be seen at night. Bromo was great too. Overall we had a fantastic time, many thanks. Phil H." Feedback about the Bromo, Semeru, Ijen trekking tour

"Hi Tom, Just wanted to let you know what a great trip to East Java we had earlier this month. It was a fantastic trip with spectacular sights resulting in some 500+ pictures. We really enjoyed ourselves and had a great guide with Galih. Also the porters and drivers we had did a great job. We were very pleased to see that the porters not only collected our garbage but also others'. It is really quite sad to see that others just drop theirs. Cheers, Elke and Kai" (Malaysia)

Katharina's feedback (in German) about the Krakatau to Bali tour (July 2009)

"Hallo Tobias, hallo Tom Ich bereue nichts !!!

Andy's comment on the Krakatau to Bali tour (July 2009)

Antony on the boat to Rakata island near Anak Krakatau

"Dear Volcanodiscovery and my Tour Guide Andy, I would like to thank you both for the great trip that you provided. I found the organisation was excellent and the food at many of the restaurants was superb. I think the highlight was Krakatoa which is really an amazing volcano, and some of the high climbs which were very exciting. Every volcano we visited was a bit different. Andy is a very experienced guide, who can take you as close to any volcano in the tour as you like as deemed safe by him. Most of all I was very impressed with Andy's enthusiasm, he loves the volcanoes and it really shows in his own keenness to see them over and over again. Indonesia I found overall was also very scenic. And I would encourage others to book this tour before the masses find out about it!! I hope that one day a tour will be offered to Sumatra and Andy can lead the way once again. Cheers Dr Antony V.E., Melbourne Australia."

Thousands evacuated, flights disrupted as Indonesia’s Ruang volcano erupts

Mount Ruang in the central province of North Sulawesi sent thick clouds of ash more than 5km (3 miles) into the sky.

Thousands of people have been evacuated and flights disrupted after Indonesia’s Mount Ruang erupted again, sending thick clouds of ash more than 5km (3 miles) into the sky.

Officials said the volcano in the archipelago’s North Sulawesi province erupted at least three times on Tuesday, prompting fears debris might fall into the sea and cause a tsunami.

Us returns ancient artefacts looted from cambodia, indonesia, lightning strikes erupting volcano in indonesia, more than 11,000 evacuated in northern indonesia as volcano erupts, at least 15 killed after landslides hit indonesia’s sulawesi island.

Footage shared by Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency (BNPB) showed strikes of lightning flashing above Ruang’s crater as fiery red clouds of lava and rocks were thrown into the air.

The agency said that all 843 residents living on Ruang Island, where the volcano is located, had been moved to Manado, the provincial capital about 100km (62 miles) away. Some 12,000 people from the neighbouring Tagulandang Island are being evacuated to Siau Island further north with two ships deployed to help with the process.

Rosalin Salindeho, a 95-year-old Tagulandang resident, spoke of her fears when Ruang erupted after arriving in Siau.

“The mountain exploded. Wow, it was horrible. There were rains of rocks. Twice. The second one was really heavy, even the houses far away were also hit,” she said.

Indonesia’s meteorological agency (BMKG) shared a map on Wednesday morning that showed volcanic ash had reached as far as Borneo, the island Indonesia shares with Brunei and Malaysia.

Indonesian air traffic control agency AirNav Indonesia said seven airports had been forced to close including in Manado and the city of Gorontalo.

Malaysia Airlines said the ash led to the cancellation of some flights to and from airports in the Borneo states of Sabah and Sarawak, with travel dependent on the weather conditions. North Sulawesi is in the central part of the Indonesian archipelago.

Julius Ramopolii, the head of the Mount Ruang monitoring post, said the volcano was still billowing ash and smoke above the crater on Wednesday morning.

“The volcano is visibly seen, the plume of smoke is visible, grey and thick, and reached 500-700 metres (2,300 feet) above the crater,” he said in a statement.

He said the alert level remained at its highest of a four-tiered system and called on residents to remain outside a seven-kilometre exclusion zone declared by the authorities.

Indonesia sees regular earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as a result of its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where multiple tectonic plates meet.

Mount Ruang recorded a series of eruptions earlier in April that also led to evacuations and disruption to aviation amid fears of a tsunami.

In 2018, the crater of Mount Anak Krakatoa, between Java and Sumatra islands, partly collapsed during a major eruption that sent huge chunks of the volcano sliding into the ocean, leading to a tsunami that killed more than 400 people and injured thousands more.

JAKARTA: They live on a remote island in the Celebes Sea. The nearest search and rescue office is a six-hour boat ride away.

Against these odds, the 838 people who live in the shadow of Indonesia’s Mount Ruang managed to evacuate to safety just before the volcano rumbled to life in a series of massive eruptions last week.

Scientists say last week’s eruptions were some of the biggest Indonesia has seen in the last 50 years, unleashing 200 million cubic meters of ash, hot rocks and lava from its chamber.

The intensity of Mt Ruang’s eruptions and the amount of material ejected were comparable to the 2010 eruptions of Mt Merapi, Indonesia’s most volatile volcano located 2,000km away in Java, which killed 353 people.

Yet, no lives were lost during Mt Ruang’s eruptions despite the relatively short window for the island’s inhabitants to evacuate. Ruang island is about 100km northeast of Manado city in North Sulawesi.

Although the government had recorded an increase in volcanic activities since Apr 10, locals were only told to evacuate at 2pm on Apr 16, mere hours before the first eruption at 7.19pm.

Rescue officials stationed in Sulawesi reached Ruang island the following day. By that time, the island was already deserted with all its residents evacuating on their own to the neighbouring island of Tagulandang, among other places.

“A speedy evacuation is critical in any disaster situation. And the fact that people on Ruang island did that on their own, with little intervention from authorities, shows how well their disaster preparedness is,” said Dr Eko Teguh Paripurno, a disaster mitigation expert from Yogyakarta’s National Development University (UPN).

They knew when to evacuate and where to go. This was the main reason why, despite the massive eruptions, there were no deaths reported.”

Mt Ruang’s eruptions have highlighted the importance of disaster preparedness among those living in remote areas with a high risk of natural disasters, Dr Eko said. Lessons include mapping out hazardous areas and communicating the risks clearly to inhabitants, having a fast and accurate early warning system, and ensuring people stay away from the exclusion zone.

The consequences of lax disaster preparedness can be dire, as seen during the Dec 3 eruption of Mt Marapi in West Sumatra, which killed 23 people. The mountain, a popular hiking spot, had been on a moderate alert level of two since 2011 and people were supposed to stay at least two kilometres away from the crater.

But hikers told local media that they were not briefed about the dangers by officials from the Marapi National Park when they obtained permission to enter the mountain, nor were there signposts warning people that they were too close to hazardous areas.

Indonesia lowers Mount Ruang volcano alert level, reopens nearby airport

Indonesia has four volcano alert levels, ranging from normal to very high. The various levels have different exclusion zones that increase up to a six-kilometre radius around the crater. Mt Marapi is now at level three.

Before this month, Mt Ruang last erupted in 2002, according to the Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Programme. Since Apr 16, however, the volcano has erupted eight times – on occasion, so powerfully as to spew a towering plume of smoke more than three kilometres high.

Ashes from the volcano later spread to the main islands of Sulawesi and Borneo, disrupting air travel and forcing the closure of some airports including Manado’s Sam Ratulangi Airport, which was shut for five days.

Mt Ruang’s volcanic activities have since receded but as of Thursday (Apr 25), people were still barred from setting foot on the 19 sqkm island.

krakatau volcano tour indonesia

STRINGENT POLICIES ARE KEY

Straddling the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia is home to 127 volcanoes, 76 of which are considered very active.

Several of these volcanoes are completely surrounded by the sea.

“There are many volcanic islands which share a similar situation as Mt Ruang,” said Professor Irwan Meilano, dean of the faculty of earth sciences and technology at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).

Some of these volcanic islands are now uninhabited – like Krakatoa, whose cataclysmic eruption in 1883 triggered a tsunami that killed more than 36,000 people.

But there are those which are occupied by many inhabitants like the 76 sqkm island of Ternate, where more than 200,000 people live in the shadow of the volatile Mt Gamalama. The 1,715m-tall mountain last erupted in 2022.

“For islands like this, it is important to properly map out where the hazardous areas are,” said Prof Irwan, adding that these risks must be communicated properly to all inhabitants of such islands. This, he continued, should apply to both sparsely and densely populated volcanic regions.

“The key is stringent spatial planning policy. There are areas which are not fit for human settlement. Meanwhile, areas which can be settled must have clear evacuation routes,” he said.

krakatau volcano tour indonesia

Early detection a key part of Indonesia’s fire management efforts in face of greater wildfire threat

The majority of Ternate’s inhabitants live on the southeastern side of the island, away from the lava flow which has historically affected the northwestern slopes of Mt Gamalama.

Ruang island, however, is about a-fourth the size of Ternate. Based on previous eruptions, scientists consider the entire island vulnerable to lava flows and fast-moving clouds of gas and volcanic matter in the event of an eruption. Historically, Mt Ruang’s eruptions have also been many times more powerful than Mt Gamalama’s.

The only escape route is by boat to the larger nearby Tagulandang island, which is about 1km away.

“Because the only evacuation routes are by sea, timing is key,” said Dr Eko of UPN Yogyakarta. “Which is why disaster preparedness training as well as a fast and accurate early warning system are so important.”

BETTER MONITORING NEEDED

Predicting Mt Ruang’s next eruption will be a challenge.

Because of its remoteness, the 725m-tall volcano is not well recorded or studied. There is only one observation station on Tagulandang which monitors the volcano’s seismic activity remotely based on a series of instruments installed at the slopes of Mt Ruang.

In contrast, Indonesia’s most volatile volcano, Mt Merapi in Java (not to be confused with Mt Marapi in West Sumatra), has three observation outposts.

This allows scientists to measure more accurately how much the volcano is deforming, a sign that pressure is building inside the volcano, or spot any other irregularities.

They can then better predict when an eruption will happen – possibly days or even weeks in advance – providing officials more time to evacuate residents.

krakatau volcano tour indonesia

Three months after devastating West Java quake, authorities redesign the area to prepare for future

In contrast, officials only had hours to warn Ruang island residents of an imminent eruption.

“Mt Ruang’s activities increased quite suddenly and escalated quickly,” Mdm Heruningtyas Desi Purnamasari, a volcano observation team leader with the Indonesian Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre (PVMBG), said at a press conference on Apr 18.

The situation deteriorated so rapidly, the PVMBG had to raise Mt Ruang’s alert level twice on the same day on Apr 16, and ordered residents to stay at least four kilometres away from the crater.

After the second eruption in the early hours of Apr 17, Mt Ruang was on the maximum alert level of four and the exclusion zone was raised to six kilometres around the volcano, meaning some residents on neighbouring Tagulandang also had to evacuate.

As of Thursday, more than 14,000 people were evacuated and seeking shelter in the safer parts of Tagulandang as well as Sulawesi.

krakatau volcano tour indonesia

Given Mt Ruang’s history of triggering a deadly tsunami, scientists say it should be better monitored.

“During an eruption in 1871, there were witnesses who said that there was a tsunami whose height reached five metres. But there are those who said (the tsunami) could be up to 25m (by the time it reached) other islands,” said Dr Mirzam Abdurrachman, a volcanologist from Bandung Institute of Technology.

At least 400 people were killed in the 1871 tsunami, caused when sections of Mt Ruang collapsed and created massive waves that travelled for tens of kilometres.

There were similar fears last week, prompting officials to issue a tsunami warning as a precaution. But the warning was withdrawn on Monday (Apr 22), after PVMBG officials determined the volcano would remain relatively intact in spite of the ongoing eruptions.

Scientists say if there had been a tsunami last week, there would have been a higher chance of deaths.

The last time a volcano-triggered tsunami occurred in Indonesia was in 2018. More than 400 people in coastal areas surrounding Krakatoa were killed.

‘COMPLACENCY IS THE NUMBER ONE KILLER’

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said last week’s eruption damaged more than 3,000 homes as well as several churches and schools in both Ruang and Tagulandang.

Aerial photographs taken by rescuers and local journalists showed nearly all structures in the affected areas covered in volcanic ash. Some were charred by the extreme heat, while others were damaged by hot lava rocks falling to the ground.

krakatau volcano tour indonesia

On Apr 22, the PVMBG lowered the alert level of Mt Ruang to three but still declared the volcanic island as well as parts of Tagulandang within a four-kilometre radius from the crater off limits. The centre warned that Mt Ruang continued to show activity and has not returned to normal.

The warning has not deterred a few Ruang residents from secretly returning to inspect their damaged homes and retrieve some of their belongings.

“I came to pick up my generator, my washing machine and a few other tools we will use at our refugee camp,” a Ruang Island resident named Mr Dikson told Indonesian news portal Berita Satu on Tuesday (Apr 23).

Mr Lilik Kurniawan, BNPB deputy for logistics and equipment, said officials will conduct patrols and erect warning signs to keep residents from entering the island.

“We want to remind people that the island is still considered as a high risk area,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

Mr Lilik also promised the authorities would meet the evacuees’ need for shelter, food and clothes.

Dr Eko, the disaster mitigation expert, said it is important to ensure that the locals stay away from the exclusion zone, which can be in place for years as is the case with Marapi.

“In many disaster situations that I have observed, the number one killer is complacency, the thinking (that) ‘I’ll just ignore the warnings for a little while, it will be alright’. Especially now that volcanic activities have receded and people are getting tired of living in refugee camps,” he said.

“The situation can deteriorate again. The volcano can still erupt. People need to stay vigilant.”

Mt Ruang volcano spews lava and volcanic ash

Indonesia volcano eruption spreads ash to Malaysia and shuts airports

Ships evacuating 12,000 islanders over fears that side of Mount Ruang might slide into sea and cause tsunami

Eruptions at a remote Indonesian volcano have forced more than half a dozen airports to close with ash spreading as far as Malaysia, according to officials, while authorities rushed to evacuate thousands due to tsunami fears .

Mount Ruang erupted three times on Tuesday, spewing lava and ash more than 5km (three miles) into the sky and forcing authorities to issue evacuation orders for 12,000 people.

A rescue ship and a warship were dispatched to help move thousands from neighbouring Tagulandang island north to Siau island because of a warning about parts of the volcano falling into the sea, potentially causing a tsunami .

Rosalin Salindeho, a 95-year-old resident of Tagulandang in Indonesia’s outermost region of North Sulawesi province, spoke of her fears when Ruang erupted after arriving in Siau.

“The mountain exploded. Wow, it was horrible. There were rains of rocks. Twice. The second one was really heavy, even the houses far away were also hit,” she said.

The country’s meteorological agency, BMKG, shared a map on Wednesday morning that showed volcanic ash had reached as far as eastern Malaysia on Borneo island, which Malaysia shares with Indonesia and Brunei.

The spread of volcanic ash forced seven airports to close, the biggest in provincial capital Manado and the city of Gorontalo, according to a notice from state-run air traffic control provider AirNav Indonesia.

The crater of Mount Anak Krakatoa, between Java and Sumatra islands, also partly collapsed in 2018 when a major eruption sent huge chunks of the volcano sliding into the ocean, triggering a tsunami that killed more than 400 people and injured thousands.

19 volcanoes around the world that could erupt at any moment

Ready to blow.

DESIREE MARTIN/Contributor/Getty

Did you know there are at least 1,350 active volcanoes around the world, and roughly 20 active volcanic eruptions on any given day? While many of them occur deep under the ocean – most volcanoes are found at the edges of the Pacific Plate, a horseshoe-shaped zone known as the Ring of Fire – occasionally violent outbursts of smoke, ash and lava happen on land and cause catastrophic damage and kill anyone in their path.

Read on for more about the world's deadliest volcanoes...

Mount Marapi, Indonesia

Antony Ratcliffe / Alamy Stock Photo

The majestic Mount Marapi, whose name means 'Mountain of Fire', can be found in West Sumatra, Indonesia, and stands at an elevation of 9,485 feet (2,891m). Its deadliest eruption was in April 1979, when 60 people died.

However, the volcano has now erupted once more, leading to more tragic deaths...

DEVI RAHMAN/AFP via Getty Images

On 3 December 2023, Mount Marapi erupted. Dozens of hikers were on the volcano at the time, with 23 people dead or presumed dead so far. As many as 75 people, including climbers, were evacuated from the area early on 4 December, with many treated for burns.

Those living on the slopes were advised to stay 1.8 miles (3km) away from the crater's edge for fear of potential lava flow.

Now read on for more incredible tales about the most significant volcanic eruptions in the last decade...

Lascar, Chile

PEDRO TAPIA/AFP via Getty Images

The most active volcano in the northern Chilean Andes, Lascar is a stratovolcano made up of six overlapping craters, with a summit of 18,346 feet (5,592m). The mighty peak has had frequent small-to-moderate eruptions throughout the last few centuries, but until very recently it hadn't had a major eruption for almost 30 years.

On 11 December 2022, the volcano rumbled back to life, sending a plume of ash and smoke some 20,000 feet (6,000m) into the atmosphere.

Monteiro 86/Shutterstock

The explosion, which was initially given a green warning by Chile's National Geology and Mining Service, was recently upgraded to a yellow alert level, which means the volcano is unstable. While surrounding areas are yet to record any damage, authorities have created a no-entry perimeter three miles (5km) around the peak.

Mauna Loa, Hawaii

Andrew Richard Hara/Getty Images

After a series of recent earthquakes at its summit, Mauna Loa, the world's largest volcano – and the most active – has erupted for the first time in 38 years. The peak, which lies within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Island of Hawaii, rises up 13,677 feet (4,169m) above sea level and around 3,100 feet (945m) below sea level, making up half the area of the Island of Hawaii.

The volcano has erupted almost 40 times since 1832.

As these shocking aerial images show, the rivers of lava emitting from the peak have begun to block roads and major infrastructure on the island – and experts say there's nothing that human intervention can do to stop it.

Stromboli, Italy

VALERY HACHE/AFP via Getty Images

Located on an island off the southern coast of Sicily, Stromboli is considered one of the most active volcanoes on Earth and has been erupting almost continuously since 1932 – earning it the nickname 'Lighthouse of the Mediterranean'. It stands at 3,031 feet (924m) above sea level and its eruptions usually occur in small, mild blasts.

However, an explosion that was recorded on 9 October 2022 was anything but mild. In fact, it caused the partial collapse of volcanic material from the rim of the crater, leading to a three-minute-long seismic signal. Videos released by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology show massive plumes of smoke and lava flows coming from the peak.

Thankfully no one was harmed by the event, although a tourist was sadly killed by a powerful eruption here in 2019.

Mount Semeru, Indonesia

Rainer Albiez/Shutterstock

Mount Semeru, a 12,060-foot (3,676m) volcano on Java, Indonesia’s most populated island, has been continually active since 1967 and is extremely hazardous. The current eruption has been continuing since 2014 and on 4 December 2021 a major ash plume caused ashfall, pyroclastic flows and mudflows that were responsible for the deaths of at least 48 people.

According to the head of Indonesia’s geological agency, the eruption was caused by heavy rainfall on the lip of Semeru’s crater, which led to its partial collapse.

Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland

Mateusz Liberra/Shutterstock

In 2010, newsreaders around the world struggled to pronounce the name of the Icelandic glacier volcano that brought air traffic in Europe to a standstill. Eyjafjallajökull belched out huge ash clouds that hung in the air for more than six days and made air travel across Europe near impossible.

Kristyna Henkeova/Shutterstock

Although it’s too dangerous to walk on the ice cap that covers the caldera of the volcano, the 2010 eruption wasn't too violent. This means hikers have been keen to explore the rocky terrain on the 15-mile (25km) Fimmvörðuháls ridge hike.

Snaking between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers, craters and lava flow formed by the 2010 eruption, it's equally intimidating and gorgeous.

Anak Krakatoa, Indonesia

The Wild Eyed/Shutterstock

One of the biggest volcanic eruptions in recorded history happened in 1883 in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra. The island of Krakatoa was destroyed and an ash cloud entered the atmosphere and circled the world. Anak Krakatoa, meaning the 'child of Krakatoa', is a cinder cone volcano formed inside the original Krakatoa caldera.

It only appeared in 1927 and as a young volcano it's of huge interest to scientists.

Westend61 GmbH/Alamy Stock Photo

Since the end of the 20th century there has been sporadic volcanic activity at Anak Krakatoa, including in 2010 (pictured). But in June 2018 a new and more problematic eruptive phase was observed and on 22 December that year it erupted.

A huge part of the volcano collapsed and caused a tsunami that killed 426 people, with more than 7,000 injured.

Kīlauea, Big Island, Hawaii, USA

USGS/Alamy Stock Photo

Kilauea is in the southeast of Big Island and is the most active volcano in the world. Its most active vent is Halema‘uma‘u, the legendary home of Pele, the Hawaiian fire goddess.

It's been 200 years since its last explosive eruptions (scores of deaths occurred here in 1790) and in recent years eruptions are usually contained by the lava lake within the crater.

Maridav/Alamy Stock Photo

That all changed in 2018, when a series of eruptions between May and August devastated residential areas in the Lower East Rift Zone and molten lava poured into the ocean at Kapoho Bay. Another eruption began in December 2020 with a new lava lake and lava flows, but for the time being all lava activity is contained within the Halema‘uma‘u crater.

Daily status updates are available from the US Geological Survey.

White Island (Whakaari), New Zealand

Julius_Silver/Pixabay

Just 30 miles (48km) off of the coast of New Zealand’s North Island, in the Bay of Plenty, White Island (Whakaari to the Māori) is a grumbling volcanic island of billowing steam. About 70% of the volcano is actually below sea level so what you see exposed is the peak and crater lake. The rock's yellow tinge is from the sulphur.

Francesca Taylor/Shutterstock

Once a popular day trip destination, it's no longer possible to set foot on White Island/Whakaari as in 2019 there was a major eruption and 22 people, mostly travellers, lost their lives. It was New Zealand's deadliest volcanic disaster since the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera.

Since the tragic event, the volcanic activity has declined, limited to white gas-and-steam emissions.

Mount Sinabung, Indonesia

PLOO Galary/Shutterstock

Located in North Sumatra along the Ring of Fire, the 8,530-foot (2,600m) high Mount Sinabung had been dormant for more than 400 years before it broke its quiet spell in 2010. Since then, there have been several major blasts, and in 2014, 16 people died after authorities allowed evacuated residents to return to their homes prematurely.

SUGENG NURYONO/AFP via Getty Images

On 2 March 2021, the fearsome volcano spewed an enormous ash cloud as far as three miles (5km) into the sky, its first major eruption since the previous August, when it was placed on the second-highest alert level. Activity continued from April to June and then again in August 2021, when gas-and-steam plumes were observed, as well as lava avalanches.

Scientists have once again set up a 1.2-mile (2km) exclusion zone.

Located around 140 miles (226km) from Mauritius, the island of Réunion is home to the Piton de la Fournaise (in English, Peak of the Furnace) volcano, which at 8,635 feet (2,632m) is the highest in the Indian Ocean. Réunion’s most visited attraction, it is also one of the world's most active volcanoes, erupting on average once every nine months.

The latest seismic activity was January to April 2021, with an explosive episode on the south side on 10 April 2021. Active lava fountains and gas and steam erupted from fissures and a single lava flow advanced throughout April.

The eruption was still active in January 2022.

The normally bright skies of the island of Saint Vincent and its Caribbean neighbours turned a murky grey when La Soufrière erupted on Friday 9 April 2021. It was the first activity from the volcano in 40 years and only the fifth big event since records started in 1718. The ash cloud reached 20,000 feet (6,000m) and saw residents in the immediate area evacuated.

Jade PM/Shutterstock

A strong stench of sulphur engulfed the island, while the ash cloud caused a blanket of gloomy grey to loom over both Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and neighbouring Barbados (pictured), around 120 miles (193km) to the east. Two further eruptions later in the day on 9 April added to the poor visibility.

No casualties were reported but up to 20,000 people were evacuated and it was months before some could return to their homes.

Mount Nyiragongo, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Ben Houdijk/Shutterstock

The 3,000-square-mile (7,770sq km) Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is Africa's oldest park and home to a quarter of the world’s critically endangered mountain gorillas. At the very top of Mount Nyiragongo is the world’s largest lava lake, a churning molten red lake of fire.

Dario Verdugo/Shutterstock

The unusual fluidity of the lava makes it all the more dangerous to the people living in the shadow of the volcano – more than 200 people were killed and 120,000 left homeless in a devastating eruption in 2002 when basalt lava poured into the city of Goma at 37 miles per hour (60km/h).

ALEX MILES/AFP via Getty Images

On 22 May 2021, Nyiragongo abruptly erupted again, this time taking the lives of at least 31 people. Nyiragongo caused an ongoing humanitarian crisis with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reporting that around 500,000 people were left without clean drinking water, partly as a result of damage to pipes and water reserves during the eruption.

Thousands of households were evacuated to makeshift camps, and many were unable to return to their homes for months after the disaster. In December 2021 and January 2022, the lava lake was reported to be growing and rumbling was audible.

Pacaya, Guatemala

Bill Lara Alb/Shutterstock

Pacaya is one of the most active volcanoes in Guatemala, located roughly 31 miles (50km) south of Guatemala City. Despite its high activity level, the 8,373-foot (2,552m) peak is popular with hikers when it's safe to visit, but that doesn't happen often...

Josue Decavele/Getty Images

In May 2010 two local villagers and a reporter were killed and 100 homes were destroyed, when the Guatemalan giant spewed lava, rocks and debris. There were more major eruptive events in 2020 and 2021 too, when eruptions were characterised as strombolian, which means the blasts themselves were relatively tame, but they threw out bombs of lava and burning cinders.

Since then, sporadic ashfall was reported in May, June and August of 2021, with gas-and-steam emissions in August too.

Cumbre Vieja, La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain

Masi Perez/Shutterstock

One of Spain's Canary Islands, located off northern Africa's west coast, La Palma is known for its volcanic landscape. Usually Cumbre Vieja, a mountain range and volcano set in a park of the same name, is a top attraction for hikers.

But after several earthquakes in mid-September 2021, the volcano erupted for the first time since the 1970s on 19 September, spewing lava into the air and down hillsides, and emitting columns of smoke and ash.

Around 3,000 buildings were destroyed and more than 5,500 hectares of land were affected, including banana plantations which are vital to the island's economy. A total of 6,000 people were temporarily evacuated as rivers of molten lava flowed out towards the ocean and scientists estimated that the volcano erupted more than double the amount of molten rock than during its last eruption in 1971.

Dan Kitwood/Staff/Getty

Sulphur and carbon dioxide emissions turned the crater yellow, orange and white and new volcanic vents opened up, sending more lava flows down the mountain. Despite the damage to property and the land, thankfully there were no deaths or injuries directly linked to the eruptions.

VICTOR SVENSSON/Contributor/Getty

Volcanic activity lasted 85 days and is thought to be the most devastating eruption in Europe in 80 years. While most of the island was unaffected, those living in the vicinity of Cumbre Vieja endured tremors, poor air quality and ash clouds until Christmas Day 2021, when it was officially announced that the eruption was over.

Wolf Volcano, Galápagos, Ecuador

Wilson Cabrera/Parque Nacional Galapagos via Getty Images

After laying silent for more than three decades, in May 2015 the Galápagos’ Wolf Volcano sent clouds of ash and spewing lava into its surroundings. Luckily the Wolf Volcano is away from the main population centre on the island and also the lava flowed east and southeast rather than down the north slope, which is home to rare pink iguanas and giant tortoises.

The volcano erupted again in January 2022 when a colossal ash cloud rose more than 12,444 feet (3,793m) above sea level. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the eruption, although eight people working in the area were evacuated. Jaw-dropping aerial images captured a glowing orange river of lava slowly trickling into the ocean.

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha‘apai, Tonga

This photo is a still capture of a video released by NASA when a small, uninhabited South Pacific island known as Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha‘apai – originally two islands that became one landmass in January 2015 after an eruption formed new land between them – was obliterated by a massive volcanic eruption.

Little is understood about volcanoes that erupt in shallow water and volcanologists have been analysing the extraordinary power of the blast.

Tonga Geological Services had been observing and monitoring Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha‘apai since the eruption began on 20 December 2021, but it wasn't until 15 January 2022 that the climatic blast came, causing the largest volcanic eruption in the 21st century, with a blast so loud that it was heard 6,000 miles away in Alaska.

It triggered tsunamis in Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu, New Zealand, Japan, the US and South America, with new research revealing that the strength of the blast shot gas and ash 35 miles (56km) up into the mesosphere – that's halfway to space – with the force of the eruption equivalent to hundreds of atomic bombs. At least three people are known to have died and the island was left cut off from the world for more than a week.

Mount Etna, Sicily, Italy

Vadym Lavra/Shutterstock

The highest active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna is a magnificent landmark in the northeast of the island of Sicily. Fiery Etna erupts several times a year and is actually a series of nested stratovolcanoes (conical volcanoes built up of layers of lava and ash) with four distinct summit craters.

In February 2021, Etna began sporadically spewing hot lava into the sky and sending ash tumbling down onto nearby houses and cars. While residents weren't in any danger, authorities temporarily closed the airport in Catania due to small stones in the atmosphere.

Etna put on a monumental fireworks display and while the dust from the spectacle was disruptive, it offered the opportunity for some jaw-dropping photography, such as this shot of a Baroque church in the village of Zafferana Etnea.

Data gathered by Italy's National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology showed that as of August 2021, Europe's tallest volcano is now taller than ever. Analysis of satellite images revealed that Mount Etna's southeast crater has grown to a record 11,000 feet (3,357m) above sea level due to eruptions.

Around 50 episodes of activity were recorded in 2021 and the Sicilian government estimated that more than 300,000 tonnes of ash were cleaned up.

Activity continued in 2022 following a dramatic six-mile (9.5km) ash plume being blasted from the southeast crater on 21 February. The ancient port city of Catania – no stranger to eruptions – was covered in ash and the Catania–Fontanarossa Airport, also known as the Vincenzo Bellini Airport, was temporarily closed.

The airport was also closed after an eruption in August 2023. The latest seismic activity from what is now known as Europe's most active volcano, was on 1 December 2023. Residents said it lasted several hours.

Fagradalsfjall, Iceland

Thanks to Iceland’s position on the Mid-Atlantic ridge where two tectonic plates meet, residents of the Nordic country see substantial volcanic activity. On 19 March 2021, Mount Fagradalsfjall volcano put on a fiery display – the first eruption in 800 years on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland's southwest.

Located in the south, about an hour’s drive from Reykjavík, the spectacle drew hikers from miles around, keen to watch the lava flowing from the mountain’s two craters. Its steady flow showed no signs of being explosive or posing any threat.

Some enterprising (and presumably hungry) scientists were even spotted cooking sausages on the mountain. The only danger was due to gasses which, in some weather conditions, can build-up to life-threatening levels. The viewing area was temporarily closed as a precaution on 22 March 2021.

The eruption rumbled on for around six months, attracting tourists and serving as the backdrop for a number of unusual activities including the filming of a music video and even a wedding. On 6 April 2021, spectators were evacuated when a helicopter spotted a third fissure forming a whole new lava field, then a month later, the spewing volcano lit up Reykjavik's night sky when fountains as tall as 1,500 feet (460m) were recorded.

Fagradalsfjall erupted again on 3 August 2022, after days of strong earthquakes in the area. The latest eruption began at a fissure only a few hundred feet away from last year’s spectacular spewing of lava.

Since the volcano has now erupted twice in less than a year, volcanologists believe this could mark the start of decades of occasional eruptions in Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula. There is currently low threat to populated areas or critical infrastructure, but tourists and residents have been advised to avoid the area due to poisonous gasses.
