If your loved ones are planning a trip to the UAE, here's a reminder: Tourists can apply for a family group visit visa, which is free of cost for children.

Under the scheme, children under the age of 18 can be granted a visa for free while usual charges apply to their parents.

“The application for this visa should be submitted along with either father’s or mother’s application,” said Subair Thekepurathvalappil, senior manager for inbound and outbound operations at Regal Tours Worldwide.

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

Industry experts said several visitors had been opting for this entry permit.

“A family group visit visa is more convenient and cost-effective for families, given that there is no visa fee for children under the age of 18,” Subair said, adding that there are no restrictions on the number of children who can apply for the permit.

The free visa is also applicable even to children who are travelling with just one parent, he explained. It is available for a 30- or 60-day stay, which can be extended within the country.

With the festive season just around the corner, several family group visit visas are being issued every day — particularly to Indians who wish to celebrate Diwali in Dubai, said Firoz Maliyakkal, founder and CEO of Tahira Tours and Travels.

This visa, however, is not new. It was introduced two years ago and has since been a popular option for visitors from around the world.

How to apply

  • A family will have to submit copies of their passports and photos — all at once — to a travel agency.
  • Fees are paid. Note that though the visa is free for children, travel agent service charges and insurance fees will apply.
  • The agency then processes the application.
  • The visa is usually issued in a day or two.
  • Visa fee for parents, along with the service charge for children, may vary depending on the travel agency.
  • A 30-day visa for a parent ranges from Dh350 to Dh500.
  • Service charge and insurance for a child range between Dh80 and Dh120.
  • A 60-day visa will cost Dh500 to Dh650, while the service charge, including insurance, may vary from Dh130 to Dh170.

Requirements

  • Passport copy
  • Passport-sized photograph

Extension policy

Experts say the family visa can be extended without exiting the country, “however, a full visa fee has to be paid for children. The extension within the country is not free for children", said Subair.

“Visitors can extend the family visa for up to 120 days without exiting the country,” he added.

How to sponsor your family in the UAE – A complete guide

  • Family Visa Requirements
  • Eligibility Criteria
  • Required Documents
  • Validity and Renewal

The UAE population, especially its workforce, mainly consists of expatriates. The latest visa regulations simplify the UAE family sponsorship process, provided sponsors fall under a specified income bracket. This handy guide on sponsoring family members in the UAE can help you understand the rules and procedures for obtaining residency for your dependents. So, let’s take a look.

Please note that immigration rules in the UAE are subject to change. We will update our article if and when new laws are introduced, or any announcements are made. Also, note that we’ve only provided an overview of the process; you can visit Amer or GDRFA’s official website(s) for specific information about UAE sponsor visa .

UAE FAMILY VISA – AN OVERVIEW

In 2022, the UAE government announced major changes to its visa policy. Among the changes announced were amendments to the family sponsorship policy for expatriates in the UAE. After changes in rules for a family visa in the UAE, the government announced that residents could sponsor their sons up to 25 years of age.

UAE FAMILY VISA RULES

The family visa UAE rules state that the educational background or profession will not be a condition based on which family visas will be handed out.

Instead, the income of the residents looking to sponsor their family visas will be considered. So, regardless of your job designation, you can sponsor family members if you have the financial means and a valid visa. However, before taking the plunge, check your UAE visa status to know whether you can sponsor your loved ones.

Before the UAE family sponsorship policy amendment of 2019, only individuals from certain professions could sponsor family members. Since 2019, any male residents employed in the UAE can sponsor their immediate family members, such as their wives and children, with a minimum salary of AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 plus accommodation.

The conditions are slightly different for female residents in Abu Dhabi looking to sponsor their families. A woman should have a valid work visa, and her monthly salary should be at least AED 5,000.

In Dubai, a woman’s salary should be at least AED 4,000 to sponsor her family. She is also required to get her request approved by the GDFRA.

RESIDENCY VISA RULES FOR CHILDREN SPONSORED BY PARENTS

After amendments to family visa Dubai rules in 2022, expats can sponsor male children up to the age of 25. The UAE family visa rules remained unchanged for daughters. There is no age limit on how long parents can sponsor their daughters – they can be sponsored until they get married.

A bonus for this type of visa is that parents will not have to make bank deposits of AED 5,000. The new family visa UAE price will be AED 100 for first-time issuance and renewal.

Children with disabilities will be granted a residence permit permanently, irrespective of their age. Moreover, Green visa residence holders can sponsor any first-degree relatives. The residency of family members will be for the same period as the sponsor residence holder.

The visa for family in UAE regulations have been well received since they were amended and announced in 2022. The new rules continue to contribute to the stability of the UAE’s economy while building a cohesive environment for individuals to start a family in the UAE.

  • As per the GDRFA, you must sponsor both parents together, with proof that you are their sole support and they have nobody to look after back home.
  • If one of your parents has passed away or is divorced, you must show the official documents as proof or justification of sponsoring only one parent.

  • Those detected with inactive or dormant pulmonary tuberculosis are  “considered medically fit” and will be given a one-year ‘Health Fitness Certificate for Residence’. • Here is how you can check DHA medical fitness result online .

DURATION OF SPONSORSHIP AND TIME LIMIT

  • When sponsoring your spouse, children or parents, you have a 90-day window to apply for their residence visa in the UAE after arriving there.

In this section, we will provide information on the documents required for UAE family visas for spouses and children.

Case 1: Full family with children. Sponsor - husband

  • Sponsor's residency visa
  • Sponsor's Emirates ID
  • Photocopy of sponsor's passport
  • Job Contract or Salary Certificate issued not earlier than one month before the application. In the Mainland, it is issued by the employer; in a free zone, it is issued by the free zone itself.
  • Marriage Certificate (Muslims with mosque-registered marriages must obtain state marriage certificates)
  • Birth certificates for children
  • Photocopies of wife and children's passports
  • Photographs of wife and children
  • Registered lease or property purchase agreement with Ejari
  • Proof of legal guardianship for foster children (typically a court order)
  • Medical insurance certificates for wife and children (not mandatory for visa application but recommended for staying in the UAE)

Case 2: Full family with children. Sponsor - wife

When the wife is the family visa sponsor, an additional document is required: the father's permission. This is a standard No Objection Certificate (NOC), issued by a notary at the Dubai Court. Note that the father's permission for the child to travel abroad is insufficient.

Case 3: Father with his children

A father relocating to the UAE with his children without their mother can obtain family visas for the children without the wife's consent.

Case 4: Mother with children

When a mother and her children move to the UAE, the children will require their father's permission (NOC), the father's death certificate (if he is not alive), or a court certificate stating the mother is the sole custodian of the children to obtain family visas. In this case, the father's permission for the children to travel abroad is not sufficient.

Sponsoring parents

In addition to preparing the standard documents listed above, there are certain additional requirements in order to obtain family visas for parents:

1. Mandatory insurance

The older the parent, the more expensive the insurance will be. There is no age limit for family visas.

2. Mandatory sponsorship of both parents

You cannot sponsor only the father or only the mother, as long as both parents are alive. If the parents are divorced, proof of divorce or death of either parent is required.

3. Separate room for parents

Rented or owned accommodation in the UAE must provide a separate room for parents. Therefore studios or one bedroom apartments are not suitable.

4. Minimum wage requirement of the sponsor

In order to sponsor parents, the salary of the sponsor must be at least AED 20,000.

A deposit of AED 3,000 is required for each parent, regardless of the sponsor's visa type (investor or worker).

6. Providing proof of parental status and marriage

It is necessary to add to the package of necessary documents the Marriage Certificate of the parents as well as the Birth Certificate of the sponsor proving that they are their parents or parents of the spouse.

Before coming to the UAE, it is necessary to legalize all documents that will be required in the Emirates, such as children's birth certificates, your marriage certificate or diploma. Legalization of documents means their certification by the relevant state authorities in the country of issue.

Important! Each document shall be legalized in the country of issue! In the UAE this can be done through the Consulate General of your country in the UAE, but it will require a power of attorney and will take a longer time! Therefore, we recommend you to legalize the necessary documents while you are still in your country.

Since the UAE has not acceded to the 1961 Hague Convention, legalization of documents involves consular procedures.

Step-by-step instructions for legalizing documents in the country of issue:

  • Prepare notarized copies of documents for legalization.
  • Translate the copies into Arabic and have the translator's signature notarized. An English translation is also recommended, but Arabic remains the main language.
  • Have the notary's signature and seal certified by the Ministry of Justice in your country.
  • Sign the seal of the Ministry of Justice and the signature of the official at the Consular Department of your country's Foreign Ministry.
  • Have the signature and seal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs witnessed at the UAE Consulate.

It is possible to apply for family visas when the family is still at home as well as when they have already arrived in the UAE. The procedure in both cases is the same, namely:

  • Collection of documents.
  • Applying for an Entry Permit. The sponsor needs to come to Dubai AMER Center with the package of documents and original Emirates ID. Generally, the permit is ready within five business days.
  • Changing visa status If family members are already in the UAE on tourist visas, their visa status is changed from tourist to resident. If they are not in the country, they have 60 days under this permit to enter the UAE and apply for a family visa. If they do not manage to complete the procedure within 60 days, they have to obtain Entry Permit again.
  • Medical examination and fingerprinting (take the 16 years old and over)
  • Applying for an Emirates ID
  • Making deposit for sponsored persons If the sponsor has an investor visa, then he/she should make a deposit at the rate of 3,000 AED for each sponsored family member. In the case of sponsoring parents, the deposit is due regardless of visa type.
  • Obtaining a Visa Sticker A Visa Sticker will be mailed as proof of residency status in the UAE. Keep it as it will be required along with your Emirates ID in the future. Note that the physical visa stamp is no longer placed in your passport. With this sticker you can leave the country if necessary. It is not necessary to wait for Emirates ID. You can get it later.
  • Getting an Emirates ID card Within a week after receiving the Visa Sticker, the Emirates ID card itself will be ready, and the person becomes a full-fledged resident of the UAE.

What is legalization of documents?

Legalization of documents is an official certification of documents by the state authorities of the country of issue: notary, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs with following certification by a UAE Consulate.

How to legalize documents for the UAE?

  • Legalization of documents for the UAE in both English and Arabic languages can be made at the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Foreign Affairs with following certification at the UAE Consulate in your country.
  • Also the legalization of documents can be done through the Consulate of your country directly in the Emirates. However, in this case a power of attorney will be needed for a person who will certify the documents in your country and then send them to the Emirates. Legalization will take much longer.
  • In some cases documents translated into Arabic or English can be certified in the AMER Center in Dubai.

Important! If the document is translated by a notary, it is not always a 100% guarantee that it will be accepted in the UAE.

Is there an apostille in the UAE?

There is no apostille in the UAE. The UAE has not acceded to the 1961 Hague Convention, which simplified the legalization of documents by certifying them with an apostille.

Can we get a family visa if we are not officially married?

No. In order to apply for a family visa it is required to have all papers showing that you are married or have custody of children. All documents must be legalized.

Can I work if I have a family visa under my husband's sponsorship?

Yes, you can get a job and even open a bank account based on your husband's documents (proof of origin of funds and spouse's bank account statement). It may be noted that employers are very willing to hire in such a case, as they do not have to pay for your visa. Sometimes a husband's permission (NOC certificate) and an Labour card may be required.

Can a wife sponsor her husband and children?

Yes, a wife can sponsor family visas as well as her husband. The only difference will be the minimum wage of AED 10,000.

How much is the insurance?

The amount of insurance depends on the state of health, the age of the person being insured, and the coverage desired. The cost ranges from AED 2,000 to AED 25,000 per year.

Who can be sponsored and up to what age?

  • Daughters can be sponsored up to any age as long as they are not married.
  • Sons can be sponsored up to the age of 25 (if they are students). If not students, up to age 18.
  • Disabled children of either sex can be sponsored up to any age.
  • Minor siblings.
  • You can sponsor your parents and your spouse's parents.
  • Grandparents can sponsor their grandchildren.
  • UAE university students can sponsor their family.

What are the minimum salary requirements for a sponsor?

If the man sponsors his own family, his salary must be at least AED 5,000. If he is sponsoring his parents or his spouse's parents, 20,000 AED.

If the woman is sponsoring her family, she should have at least AED 10,000 in salary. If she is sponsoring her parents or her husband's parents, then the amount must also be at least AED 20,000.

How long is the family visa valid for?

A dependent visa is granted for the same duration as that of the sponsor's visa. For instance, if you obtain a two-year visa and apply for dependent visas for your spouse and children six months later, their visas will be valid for two years from the date of issuance, not from the start date of your visa. If needed, you can cancel your spouse's and children's visas when your own visa expires. Family visas for parents, on the other hand, are issued for one year and require annual renewal.

  • How to apply for a work residence visa in the UAE

Dubai: To be able to sponsor your family members in the UAE, you need to first make sure that you are on a residence visa in the country. This can be a work visa sponsored by your employer, or a self-sponsored visa like a Green Visa, Investor Visa, or Golden Visa.

Once you have your visa in place, you can then sponsor your family members. However, there are certain requirements you need to fulfil to be eligible for sponsoring your family members. Here are nine requirements to keep in mind:

1. Expatriate residents can sponsor their families to reside in the UAE if they have a valid residence permit/visa.

2. The sponsor must have a minimum salary of Dh4,000 or Dh3,000 plus accommodation. The type of profession is no longer a condition for an expatriate worker to be able to sponsor his family visas.

3. Male and female family members above the age of 18 need to undergo and pass medical fitness tests at approved health centres in the UAE. Medically unfit people will not be granted a residence visa. Residents who are detected with dormant or inactive pulmonary tuberculosis are also considered medically fit and are granted a one-year ‘Health Fitness Certificate for Residence’ subject to treatment and follow-up by the respective health authority.

4. A resident sponsor has 60 days to apply for his or her dependents’ residence visa after they enter the UAE under an entry permit. For babies born in the UAE, a residence visa must be applied for within 120 days of his or her birth.

5. To sponsor your parents, you need to sponsor both together. If the parents are divorced or a parent has passed away, related official documents would be needed as justification to sponsor only one of the parents.

6. When sponsoring parents, the residence visa will be granted on a yearly basis regardless of the duration of the sponsor’s visa. You also need to meet the salary requirement, as stipulated by the immigration department of the emirate that has issued your visa.

7. An expatriate resident can sponsor their daughter only if she is unmarried, with no restriction regarding her age.

8. A male or female resident can sponsor his or her son until he is 25 years old. If the son is a Person of Determination, he can be sponsored with no restrictions with regard towards his age.

9. An expatriate resident can sponsor his stepchildren, subject to the conditions stipulated by the emirate’s immigration department. For example, as per the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai’s (GDRFA-D) conditions, the sponsor needs to pay a deposit for each child and a written no-objection certificate (NOC) from the biological parent. Their residence visas are valid for one year, renewable annually.

Documents required to sponsor wife and children include:

• Application form - either online or through a registered typing office. • Passport copies of the wife and children. • Photos of the wife and children. • Medical clearance certificate of the wife and children above 18 years. • Copy of the sponsor’s employment contract or company contract. • Salary certificate from the employer stating the sponsor’s monthly salary. • Attested marriage certificate in Arabic or duly translated into Arabic by a certified translator . • Registered tenancy contract.

Cancellation

The family's residence permits are linked to the residence permit of the sponsoring family member. If the sponsoring family member’s visa is cancelled, it requires cancellation of the visas of the dependents.

Dependents are granted a six-month grace period from the date of expiry or cancellation of their visas to obtain a new residence permit. If the sponsor fails to renew or cancel the visa of his or her dependents, he or she could be liable to pay a fine.

Faster visitor visa processing for spousal applicants

If you’re being sponsored for permanent residence (PR) by your spouse or partner, you could benefit from faster processing for a visitor visa.

You may be eligible if you

  • submitted an application to be sponsored for permanent residence

Applications that need more information, for example custody documents for a child, will take longer to process.

When your sponsor receives the AOR for your permanent residence application, you can apply for a visitor visa. If you’re eligible, your visitor visa application will automatically receive faster processing. You don’t need to request it.

UAE implements stricter entry requirements for tourists

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently made some changes to their tourist entry requirements. Here’s what you need to be aware of…

UAE

Visitors to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will now need to heed specific entry requirements before visiting the country on a tourist visa.

This is the first time that UAE authorities have implemented such strict measures for international travellers.

Among these requirements, tourists will now have to provide proof of sufficient funds for expenses in cash or on a credit/debit card.

These new stricter policies were carried out to deter jobseekers from entering the country on a tourist visa with no intention of leaving ,  Visaguide.news reports.

  • IR1 and CR1 for spouses
  • IR2 for children

How to apply for permanent residency for a family member

To sponsor your family member, submit a United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Form I-130 . Each person you sponsor needs a separate Form I-130. You can submit the form online or by mail.

The process is different depending on whether your family member is already in the U.S. or abroad.

  • If your family member is in the U.S. - Learn about Adjustment of Status
  • If your family member is outside the U.S. - Learn the steps for Consular Processing

Submitting Form I-130 is the first step of the immigration visa process. Learn what other steps are involved , including:
