The Empire State Building can be admired from the outside, but for the best experience you’ll want to go inside it to take in the spectacular views on offer from the upper levels.

Of course, if you do decide to visit the Empire State Building, then you will want to do a little bit of planning. This is one of the most popular attractions in the city, with millions of people visiting every year. As such, it gets quite busy, and lines are common. We recommend buying your ticket online in advance.

In this guide, we’re going to tell you everything you need to know about visiting the Empire State Building to help you make the most of your visit. We share tips based on our experiences visiting it on multiple trips to New York City. We’ll cover how to get here, where to buy tickets, tips for your visit, ideas for saving money, and lots more.

Let’s get started!

Overview of the Empire State Building

Before we go into our guide for visiting the Empire State Building, we thought we’d share some facts and information about this iconic New York landmark which we think you’ll find interesting, and perhaps make you even more excited for your visit.

What is the Empire State Building?

The Empire State Building is a huge Art Deco skyscraper in the centre of Manhattan. It has 102 floors, and when it opened it was the tallest skyscraper in the world.

The building is primarily used as office space by a wide variety of companies, as well as serving as a popular tourist attraction. There are shops and eateries on the ground floors, as well as observation decks you can visit on the 80th, 86th and 102nd floors.

It has its own zip code, has featured in numerous movies and TV shows, including King Kong , An Affair to Remember , Sleepless in Seattle , and Elf . It is definitely a must-visit attraction for visitors to New York City.

When was the Empire State Building Built?

Construction on the Empire State Building started on the 17th March 1930, and was completed 13 months later on the 11th April 1931. It was opened on the 1st May 1931.

The building was constructed at a record pace, at an average of 4.5 stories a week. During one 10 day period, 14 floors were built!

What is the Empire State Building Made From?

The Empire State Building is constructed from a steel frame with a limestone facade. The use of steel frames combined with the invention of elevators is what made it possible to build skyscrapers to such dizzying heights, and the technique is still used in skyscraper construction to this day.

Why is it Called the Empire State Building?

The Empire State Building derives its name from the nickname given to the State of New York, which is the Empire State.

How Tall is the Empire State Building?

The Empire State Building is 1,454 feet (443.2 meters) high, measured to the very tip of the building. The roof is 1,250 ft (381 m) high.

When it was built it was the tallest building in the world, a title it held until the World Trade Centre buildings were finished in 1970.

Today it is only the seventh tallest building in the city, and only in the top 50 worldwide. However, it is still the most well known of New York’s impressive skyscraper collection, even if it is no longer the tallest.

The Empire State Building is in midtown Manhattan. The full address is Empire State Building, 350 5th Avenue, New York, NY 10118. It is also sometimes listed as 20 West 34th Street New York.

The Empire State Building is a huge building. It’s so large in fact it has its own zip code. It also has multiple entrances. As a visitor who is planning to go up to the observatories, you will need to enter at 20 West 34th Street, which is the dedicated observatory entrance.

Driving to the Empire State Building

We would definitely recommend against driving to the Empire State Building. Traffic in Manhattan is always busy and parking, if you can find any, is likely to be expensive.

Of course, if you do have a car and wish to park, there are options. You can see nearby parking structures and parking lots with this link .

If you drive, we recommend booking a parking spot in advance to be sure of a spot. We’d also suggest parking for the day as this will work out more cost effective, and then using public transport to get around to visit any other sights.

Do you Have to Pay to Visit the Empire State Building?

If you wish to visit any of the exhibits or observation decks at the Empire State Building, then you will need a ticket. See the next section for details of ticket pricing.

Of course, you can visit the outside of the building, as well as the ground floor dining options and shops for free.

How Much Does It Cost to Visit the Empire State Building?

Pricing for the Empire State Building varies depending on the experience you want, with ticket prices ranging from $44 all the way up to $500 for an adult. Prices are correct as of April 2023.

First, you have to decide which floors you want to visit.

  • Main Deck access includes access to the observation deck on the 86th floor, as well as all the exhibits on the 2nd and 80th floors.
  • Top Deck access includes the above, as well as access to the 102nd floor observation deck.

As well as the two different areas, you can also pay for more premium experiences and add-ons. These include

  • Express tickets which allow you to skip the security lines and elevator lines.
  • Guided tours, which are either small group or private
  • Tickets for access to the tower at sunrise
  • Lunch or Dinner at one of the sit-down restaurants on site
  • A ticket that lets you visit twice on the same day, once in the daytime and once at night, to see the city at different times of day.

Here are the prices for the main ticket types. These prices are taken directly from the official website and are accurate as of April 2023. Children under 6 are free for all ticket types.

Note that the prices on the official site do not include any service fees or taxes, which are added at checkout. There is currently a $2 convenience fee per ticket, plus around 9% tax per ticket to add to the below prices when buying from the official site.

  • A Main Deck ticket costs $44 for an adult, $38 for a child (6-12) and $42 for a senior (62+).
  • An Express Ticket to the Main Deck costs $84 for all visitors. This includes priority skip the line access through the security line and elevators
  • A Top Deck ticket costs $79 for an adult, $73 for a child (6-12) and $77 for a senior (62+)
  • An Express Ticket to the Top Deck costs $119 for all visitors. This includes priority skip the line access through the security line and elevators and expedited entry to the 86th and 102nd floors

Note that if you choose to visit during sunset hours, there’s an additional fee of around $10 (before tax) per ticket as this is the most popular time to visit.

In addition to the main tickets above, there are some additional tours and experiences, which are priced as follows:

  • AM/PM Experience – $64 for an adult, $54 for a child (6-12). This ticket is the same as the Main Deck ticket but allows you to return after 8pm and visit the observatory deck after dark.
  • Sunrise on 86th floor – costs $125 for all visitors. This is a limited availability ticket, with only 50 sold per session

Where to Buy Empire State Building Tickets?

There are a number of options for purchasing Empire State Building tickets.

First, you can buy entry tickets in person on-site. You’ll find the ticket machines after the security line on the second floor. We’d generally advise against buying entry tickets on site as it’s an unnecessary line that you can skip by purchasing online instead. In addition, current rules state that tickets must be purchased in advance.

We recommend instead that you buy your tickets from GetYourGuide here . They are an authorised ticket seller, and tickets are normally the same price or sometimes slightly cheaper than the official site once the taxes and convenience fees are taken into account.

Tickets booked via GetYourGuide also usually have the advantage of being refundable up to 24 hours in advance of your visit, unlike the tickets on the official website which are nonrefundable. However, always check the ticket description before purchase to check the policy.

Tickets are sent to your e-mail and you can either display them on your phone for scanning, or print them out.

They have a number of ticket options:

  • This ticket is the most popular option for visitors, and includes access to the 2nd floor exhibition, 80th floor, and 86th floor observation deck. Also known as the standard Main deck ticket. It does not include 102nd floor access, but you can upgrade the ticket on site if you wish at either the 2nd floor or 86th floor. You can also pay a little bit more for the express version. Click here to buy this ticket.
  • This AM/PM experience ticket gives you the same entry as the main deck ticket in the day, and also allows you to return after dark so you can see the city at night. Click here to buy this ticket.
  • This sunrise experience ticket gives you early access to the 86th floor observation deck of the Empire State Building for sunrise. Tickets are limited to 50 per sunrise, meaning this is the best way to get the Empire State Building observation deck almost to yourself. After sunrise, you’ll get to visit the 2nd floor exhibits.
  • This VIP Guided Tour Experience . You can book either a small-group guided tour or the red-carpet VIP private tour experience with celebrity green room access, drinks and snacks.

If you want to visit the 102nd floor, you will either need to upgrade your ticket on site, or buy the 102nd ticket from the official site here .

When comparing prices against the official site, be aware that a convenience fee of $2 is added to every ticket, and the prices shown do not include tax.

Attraction Passes that Include the Empire State Building

As with many cities around the world, there are a number of attraction passes for New York City which include free or discounted admission to some of the top attractions in the city. I’ve put together a comprehensive guide to New York Attraction passes , but here’s a quick list of the ones which include free entry to the Empire State Building.

Note that generally these passes just include standard entry to the Main Deck, so whilst they let you skip the ticket line, they are not express passes and they do not allow access to the 102nd floor observatory.

You can however pay for an upgrade on site for access to the the 102nd floor observatory if you wish.

  • New York CityPASS – this includes access to the Empire State Building, with the added benefit that you can return and get same night admission after 10pm. It also includes access to five other major attractions in the city
  • The New York Pass – includes standard skip the ticket line entry to the Empire State Building as well as over 100 other attractions in the city
  • New York Sightseeing Pass – includes standard skip the ticket line entry to the Empire State Building as well as over 100 other attractions in the city

On a recent trip to New York City we used the New York Pass to visit the Empire State Building and had no issues.

Note that you do not need to reserve a timeslot with these passes, however at busier times it can be a good idea to do so. Information on how to do so is provided with each pass.

Can You Skip The Lines at the Empire State Building?

Yes, it is possible to purchase a ticket to skip the lines at the Empire State Building.

There are three types of line you will encounter when visiting the Empire State Building.

First there is a security line, then there’s a line for tickets, and then if it is particularly busy, there will be lines for the various elevators.

If you purchase your entry ticket in advance, then you can skip the lines for the ticket machines, which are found on the 2nd floor. We highly recommend purchasing your ticket in advance so you don’t waste time in the ticket line.

It’s also possible to purchase an express ticket like this (make sure you select the express option). This will let you take advantage of VIP entry, and go to the front of the security and elevator lines by using the express lanes.

Of course, if lots of people have these tickets there is the potential to be a bit of a wait, but for the most part these tickets will offer a faster experience than the standard ticket that most visitors buy.

What are the Opening Times for the Empire State Building?

The Empire State Building is normally open 365 days of the year from 8am until 2am. The last elevators typically ascend at 1:15 am.

In exceptional circumstances these opening times may change – check the official website in advance of your visit to be sure it is open when you visit.

Note: currently the opening times are changed. Check the official website for the latest information.

You can also visit the Empire State Building for sunrise, with the exclusive sunrise access ticket . Times will vary depending on the time of the sunrise.

Tours of the Empire State Building

There are a number ways to experience the Empire State Building. As well as the official tours mentioned earlier in this guide, there are a number of other options you have, both for visiting, and for getting a unique view of the building.

These include:

  • This guided walking tour which includes tickets to the Empire State Building as well as tour of a number of other sights in the city
  • How about experiencing the Empire State Building from the air? You can get a truly once in a lifetime view by taking a private or shared helicopter ride over the city.

What is there to See and Do at the Empire State Building?

The majority of visitors who come to the Empire State Building are primarily interested in visiting the world famous outdoor observation deck and taking in the views of the city.

However, there is more to do on site than enjoying the view, and the entire experience has been significantly improved in recent years. As a result, a visit to the Empire State Building is definitely no longer just about standing in line for an elevator and taking in that view.

If you haven’t visited before, or perhaps haven’t visited for a while, you may be surprised as to how much there is to see and do here following major upgrades in 2019.

Here are some of the things you can do on site.

Observation Decks at the Empire State Building

Obviously the main reason for your visit is to go up towards the top of the tower and experience the views. There are three floors with observatories in the Empire State Building as follows:

  • 80th floor indoor observatory . Opened in late 2019, this is the newest observatory. It’s an entirely indoor observatory, so the views are through glass windows
  • 86th floor indoor/outdoor observatory . The original and most famous of the observatories, this features both an indoor and outdoor viewing area which wraps around the whole building. This is the highest floor within the actual tower, all the height above this is the spire. It’s also the highest open-air viewpoint in the city.
  • 102nd floor observatory . Found on the highest floor of the building, and fully refurbished in 2019, this floor now features floor to ceiling glass windows offering spectacular views over the city.

Exhibits and Route through the Empire State Building

The Empire State Building has a number of exhibits where you can learn about all sorts of things related to the building. This includes information about the construction of the Empire State Buildings, its architecture, its history, and its appearances in popular culture.

Here are all the exhibits you will see when you visit, as well as where they are located so you know what to expect at which part of your visit.

The first nine exhibits are located on the 2nd floor after the ticket check. These flow one after another in progressive order, and are as follows:

  • The Site in the 1920s : The exhibits start with an overview of the site before the building was even here, when the Waldorf Astoria Hotel stood on this location.
  • Construction : Models, images, and statues depict the construction process of the building, which took just over a year to complete
  • Opening Day : Newspaper prints and images share the excitement of the day the Empire State Building opened to the world
  • Modern Marvel : This interactive exhibit tells the story of how the present day Empire State Building is both energy efficient and sustainable
  • Otis Elevators : A skyscraper could not exist without elevators, and this exhibit tells the story of the elevators that make a visit to the upper floor possible in minutes
  • Urban Campus : The Empire State Building is more than just a tourist attraction—thousands of people come to work here every day. This exhibit shows some of the workspaces and views that visitors don’t normally get to see
  • World’s Most Famous Building : The Empire State Building is regularly featured in the media, including in movies, TV shows, games, commercials, This 72 screen exhibit offers an immersive snapshot of over 600 clips that feature the building.
  • Kong : Arguably the most well known film to have featured the Empire State Building, the 1933 Kong movie was where the Empire State Building made its silver screen debut. This fun exhibit gives you an idea of what it might have been like to be inside the building as Kong scaled it!
  • Celebrity : A lot of people visit the Empire State Building, including some of the world’s most well known faces. This exhibit shares a history of some of these more famous visitors, including signed memorabilia.

JK Rowling at Empire State Building

Following these 2nd floor exhibits, you will ride the elevator to the 80th floor. This elevator ride is also an experience, with the whole ceiling of the elevator displaying a fun video that shows the building being built around the elevator shaft as you ascend. Thankfully it’s all done by the time you get to the top!

Following the elevator ride you’ll come out on the 80th floor. This is also an observatory deck with windows offering views over the city, so you will likely want to pause at a window and enjoy the view.

However, as well as the views from the windows you’ll find the following exhibits on the 80th floor:

  • NYC: Above and Beyond : This interactive exhibit asks you questions about your interests and will then suggest an itinerary of sights you might want to visit throughout the city
  • Artistry in Light : This short film with accompanying images tells the story of how the music and light shows at the Empire State Building are put together.
  • Stephen Wiltshire’s Drawing : In 2017 British artist Stephen Wiltshire took a 45 minute long helicopter flight over New York City. He then drew, from memory, a detailed landscape image of the city. This is now on display on the 80th floor
  • Scenes of NYC : The last major exhibit features some of the classic viewfinders that the 86th floor is known for. If you look through the viewfinders, you’ll see panoramic views of nine well-known New York locations and landmarks.

From the 80th floor there is another elevator to the 86th floor which is just a standard elevator.

The 86th floor is all about the view, with both an indoor and outdoor viewing experience. There are some plaques and signs, but no major exhibits on this floor.

outdoor observation deck empire state building

From the 86th floor you can also ride up to the 102nd floor observation deck via another elevator if you have the correct ticket. This glass elevator has a light show and offers view of the inside of the tower as you ascend.

The top floor also has no exhibits, but the stunning views through the floor to ceiling windows more than make up for that.

One thing to bear in mind when visiting is that the exhibits, particularly on the second floor, are designed with a one-way flow in mind. Basically a visit to the Empire State Building used to involve a lot of lines, and the idea was to replace this rather boring line experience with something a lot more fun and interactive.

What this means is that you shouldn’t feel the urge to rush through and head to the top, as it’s a one-way flow and after you leave the 2nd floor exhibits for the 80th floor, you cannot return to them. So make sure you take your time and see everything on your way – the view will be waiting for you at the top when you are done!

The exception to this rule is for the sunrise ticket , where you visit the exhibits after the sunrise.

Restaurants at the Empire State Building

You can dine at the Empire State Building, and there are a number of options for doing so, including both table service options and fast-casual self-service dining options. All the dining options are on the ground floor, and can be visited without a ticket.

For a sit down meal, you have two main options. First there is the STATE Grill & Bar which offers breakfast, lunch and dinner options, as well as bar and lounge snacks. They also have a full drinks menu of soft and alcoholic beverages.

The other main sit-down dining option is Tacombi . This offers Mexican food including Tacos made from scratch. There’s also a full drinks range, with their margaritas being a popular option.

If you’d prefer something a bit quicker, there are a number of casual dining options on the ground floor as well, which include Chopt, Chipotle, and Sushi-Terra. There’s also a Juice Press and a Starbucks on site if you are just looking for a drink.

Shopping at the Empire State Building

Naturally, you can go souvenir shopping at the Empire State Building. There’s a gift store on the 80th floor as well as on the 2nd floor just after you exit the elevators and before you leave the building.

There’s also a Walgreens, AT&T store, and a FedEx Express store on site.

Tips for Visiting the Empire State Building

Here are a few things to be aware of when you visit the Empire State Building so you are fully prepared.

Prohibited Items at the Empire State Building

There are a few things you can’t bring to the Empire State Building, which include:

  • Bags or Luggage, including carry-on sized luggage. Be sure to leave your suitcases and luggage at your hotel, in your tour bus, or in a storage locker elsewhere in the city before visiting. Small backpacks or purses are fine, but will of course be searched during the security check.
  • Glass, including glass bottles
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Can, bottles, or flasks
  • Professional camera and video equipment, including tripods.
  • Sports equipment such as tennis rackets, baseball bats etc.
  • Musical instruments
  • Costumes or theatrical masks
  • Firearms of any kind

Note that there are no lockers, luggage storage, or coat check facilities at the Empire State Building. So if you bring any of the prohibited items you will not be allowed in. You can see the full list of prohibited items here .

If you have luggage you need to store, then we suggest taking advantage of a luggage storage service like Nannybag , which has locations all around the city including some near the Empire State Building.

Strollers at the Empire State Building

Foldable strollers and prams are permitted at the Empire State Building and the lifts can accommodate them. There is no stroller storage, so you will need to use the stroller throughout the visit.

Note that you must fold the stroller on the observation decks.

It is probably a wise idea to not bring a stroller unless you need to do so as you will end up needing to fold and carry it for a lot of the visit.

Restrooms at the Empire State Building

There are restrooms available at the Empire State Building on the 86th floor, including wheelchair accessible toilets.

Bag / Coat Storage at the Empire State Building

There is no luggage storage or coat check at the Empire State Building. You will have to carry whatever you bring for the duration of your visit. If you wish to store a bag nearby, check out Nannybag for some locations.

Photography at the Empire State Building

Photography and video recording for personal use is permitted at the Empire State Building on all the floors.

However, professional photography equipment is not permitted, which includes tripods, monopods, or bi-pods. If you want to do any commercial filming you will need to get prior written permission.

How Long To Visit the Empire State Building For?

As you can see from our guide, there is a lot to see and do at the Empire State Building. We would recommend a minimum of 90 minutes for your visit if you are visiting the main deck, and around 2 hours if you also intend to also  visit the 102nd floor.

Of course, you’ll want to allow more time if you plan to eat here.

What is the Best Time of Day to Visit the Empire State Building?

The Empire State Building is a popular attraction and it does get crowded. If you want to avoid the crowds, it’s recommended you visit either early in the morning, between 8am and 10am, or late at night, from around 11pm onwards.

Crowds on observation deck at Empire State Building

Download the Free Empire State Building App

To make the most of your experience you might want to download the free Empire State Building app, which is available on the Apple store for iOS and the Google Play Store for Android . We would recommend downloading this ahead of your visit.

The app features audio and visual information to help you navigate your way around, as well as history and trivia about the building. It’s free, and you’ll just need to bring along your own headphones or earbuds to listen to it during your visit.

Accessibility at the Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is fully ADA compliant, and visitors with disabilities should generally have no problem visiting. Both motorized and non-motorized wheelchairs are allowed on site, and there are ramps throughout the building where required.

Service dogs are also allowed on site, and the 86th floor features accessible restrooms as well as lowered viewing walls and binoculars. You can see more information on their accessibility page here .

If you have any questions or concerns prior to your visit, you can reach out to the on-site team via their website here .

Thanks for the great article! I want to be on the deck half an hour prior to sunset on Wednesday 27 September, which is 6.45 pm. What entrance time do you think i should book my ticket for? Coming from Australia!

Hey Shelley!

My pleasure! So I would probably aim for around 4pm to 5pm. That should give you plenty of time to see all the exhibits as you go through from the entrance (there’s quite a lot to see before you actually go up the elevator). That said, if you don’t think you’ll be as interested in the galleries and exhibits and just want to get to the top, then I’d say 5pm should give you plenty of time. Normally even at busier times the queues aren’t more than 45 minutes to an hour, and you’re visiting on a weekday so it should be fine.

Have a great time in NYC!

15 Things You Might Not Know About the Empire State Building

By m. arbeiter | mar 29, 2016.

istock

Few sights rival the splendor of an illuminated Empire State Building on a clear New York night. It may not be New York City’s tallest building, but it’s possibly its most celebrated. Here’s a quick look back at the Empire State Building’s lifespan of world records, oddball tourist attractions, and surprising affinity for strawberry jam.

1. THE BUILDING AND ITS PLOT HAVE HAD MORE THAN A DOZEN DIFFERENT OWNERS.

When the plot of land surrounding what we now know as 350 Fifth Avenue changed hands from the City of New York to private citizen and farmer John Thompson in 1799, its intended use was, aptly, of the agricultural variety. Thompson held onto the territory for 26 years before selling to Charles Lawton. Two years later, Lawton reaped a healthy profit when the famed Astor family became interested in the site as an investment property. William Backhouse Astor Sr. later converted the land for development of several mansions and, ultimately, the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

In 1928, the owners of the hotel decided to move, and the land found a new owner in the Bethlehem Engineering Corporation, which wanted to tear the hotel down and build a 25 story office building. They defaulted and sold the land to the bank, where it got picked up by former GM executive John J. Raskob. In 1930, Raskob’s Empire State, Inc., and the architectural firm Shreve, Lamb & Harmon began work on the skyscraper. From there, things get muddy: After Raskob’s death, a succession of investors, developers, and companies bought and sold it, and in 2013, the Empire State Realty Trust Inc. went public with a $929.5 million initial public offering .

2. ITS ICONIC SPIRE WAS DESIGNED AS A PORT FOR DIRIGIBLES.

empire state building private tour

Following completion of the design for what was intended to be a 1050-foot-tall skyscraper, construction chairman and former New York State Governor Al Smith decided to tack on an additional 200 feet for good measure. The extra height was not allocated for supplementary stories but for a spire that would serve as a mooring mast for the docking of airships. Though Smith asserted that his was a decision of practicality—citing the fact that the closest port for dirigibles was in Ocean County, N.J.—many suspected it was Smith’s desire to strip the 1046-foot-tall Chrysler Building of its world record that inspired the change.

3. THE BUTTON THAT “OPENED” THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING WAS LOCATED IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

empire state building private tour

The grand opening of the Empire State Building on May 1, 1931 kicked off with the traditional ribbon cutting by former Governor Smith's grandchildren and a switching on of the skyscraper’s lights. The latter task was handled by sitting President Herbert Hoover, who lit up the building without even having to make the trip to New York. Approximately 200 miles away in Washington, D.C., Hoover pressed a button that signaled the instantaneous activation of the building’s electric illumination system. (The lights of the Empire State Building would later betray Hoover, glowing bright to signify the signify the victory over the incumbent president in the 1932 election.)

4. A BOMBER PLANE ACCIDENTALLY CRASHED INTO THE BUILDING.

empire state building private tour

It was a foggy Saturday morning in July 1945, and a North American B-25 Mitchell bomber aircraft was en route from Massachusetts to the New York metropolitan area. Accounts differ wildly about what exactly happened, but the plane was probably bound for Newark Airport when it was redirected to the future LaGuardia Airport due to dwindling air visibility—and then LaGuardia also denied the landing. The plane was captained by William Franklin Smith Jr., a former military pilot who had seen active duty in Germany in 1944. (He was alleged to have said of the weather that morning, “An English day if I ever saw one.”) Confident in his skills no matter the conditions, Smith rejected suggestions to turn his aircraft away from the city, ultimately falling victim to the thick haze and colliding with the top of the skyscraper in a fiery crash that left 14 dead .

5. A WOMAN JUMPED FROM THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING’S 86TH STORY AND LIVED.

empire state building private tour

Another episode of poor weather actually saved the building from tragedy 34 years later. In early December 1979, Bronx resident Elvita Adams visited the Empire State Building with the intention of committing suicide. The 29-year-old woman leapt from the 86th story observatory, approximately 1050 feet from street level. Adams only fell about a dozen of those feet, however, when  a strong gust of wind forced her onto a 2.5 foot ledge on the 85th floor, where a security guard pulled her in through a window. The freak occurrence saved Adams’s life, leaving her with only a fractured hip.

6. THE BUILDING’S FIRST CLEANING TOOK SIX MONTHS.

empire state building private tour

After three decades as one of America’s most prominent business sites and tourist attractions, the Empire State Building needed a proper cleansing. In May 1962, property owners brought in a team of 30 to wash the building’s exterior. The troupe worked eight-hour days for six months straight before the job was complete. But this wasn’t even the toughest sanitation job to meet the skyscraper …

7. A LARGE AMOUNT OF PRESERVES ONCE COVERED MUCH OF THE BUILDING’S FAÇADE.

empire state building private tour

During a conversation with the New Yorker , Manhattan window washer Ron Zeibig recalled the especially arduous effort of removing an unholy sum of fruit spread from the side of the Empire State Building. How did it get there? Environmentally unconscious tenants, according to Zeibig: “They throw s--t out of the windows all the time. One time, they threw, like, twenty gallons of strawberry preserves—and it went through ten floors, all over the windows. And it was the winter, so it froze on there and we couldn’t get it off.”

8. THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING HAS ITS OWN ZIP CODE.

empire state building private tour

The tower stands within the geographical boundaries of Manhattan’s 10001 ZIP code, which covers land east of 5th Avenue and between 25th and 35th Streets. Since 1980, however, it has distinguished itself with a unique code of 10118.

9. THE SECOND FLOOR OF THE BUILDING INCLUDES A STAR-STUDDED MOTION SIMULATOR.

empire state building private tour

As if a spectacular bird’s eye view of New York City weren't enough of a tourism draw, the Empire State Building introduced a motion simulator in 1994. Located on the building’s second story, the simulator featured a video recording of actor James Doohan—known best as Lieutenant Commander Montgomery “Scotty” Scott from the Star Trek franchise—leading participants on an aerial tour of New York. Eight years later, Scotty was canned in favor of a different celebrity guide: Kevin Bacon.

10. THE BUILDING’S MOST FAMOUS VISITOR WAS HONORED FOLLOWING HER DEATH.

empire state building private tour

The Empire State Building boasts a lengthy screen résumé, appearing as a visual signifier of the Big Apple in hundreds of feature films. The most iconic cinematic representation of the building dates back to the 1933 version of King Kong , which famously starred early Hollywood icon Fay Wray as Ann Darrow, the woman whom the titular ape brings to the top of the skyscraper. Two days after Wray’s death in 2004, the Empire State Building undertook a rare dimming of its lights for 15 minutes to honor the actress.

11. THERE WAS AN ENTIRE FLOOR IN THE BUILDING DEDICATED TO NAPPING.

empire state building private tour

Even one of the busiest office buildings in North America can appreciate the value of some good rest and relaxation. Between 2004 and 2008, the 24th story of the Empire State Building hosted a league of “nap pods,” spherical electronic beds that foster easy snoozing via the emission of comfortable cushioning and ambient audio recordings.

12. THE RENOVATED LOBBY TOOK LONGER TO CONSTRUCT THAN THE REST OF THE BUILDING COMBINED.

empire state building private tour

The Empire State Building’s April 1931 completion marked a rather swift turnaround for a building of its stature, with the entire structure going up in less than 14 months. (What’s more, the steel work wrapped 12 days ahead of schedule.) The 1931 construction team’s efficiency is especially impressive when compared to the 2008 renovation in which the Empire State Building’s lobby endured a complete makeover back to the original aesthetic that predated interim renovations. The foyer reboot, which finally opened to the public in September 2009, took more than four months longer to complete than the entirety of the skyscraper had eight decades prior.

13. EVERY YEAR, THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING SENDS A FATHER’S DAY CARD TO ITS “DAD.”

empire state building private tour

Though celebrated as a pinnacle achievement in 20th century architecture, the Empire State Building was not a complete original. In fact, Shreve, Lamb & Harmon architect William Frederick Lamb revived his old designs for the Reynolds Building, an industrial skyscraper erected in 1929 in Winston-Salem, N.C., as a blueprint for his new project. What’s more, the Empire State Building takes pride in sharing a proverbial bloodline with the Reynolds. Every June, the New York native ships a Father’s Day card down to the Tar Heel State as a payment of gratitude for its inherited attributes.

14. THERE IS A SECRET 103RD FLOOR.

empire state building private tour

Popular understanding indicates that the Empire State Building’s 102nd floor observatory is the highest accessible point of the skyscraper. That’s not quite true, although you’ll need to curry favor with the building’s management if you want a special invite to the private observatory one story higher.

15. THE BUILDING HAS CLAIMED A NUMBER OF HEIGHT-RELATED SUPERLATIVES.

empire state building private tour

At various points throughout its lifespan so far, the Empire State Building has showered in the pride of being the “tallest” in a number of categories. As of its completion in 1931, it became the first ever building to exceed 100 stories. It went on to hold the title of world’s tallest manmade structure until 1954 (when it was bested by the Griffin Television Tower Oklahoma), world’s tallest freestanding manmade structure until 1967 (topped by the Ostankino Tower in Moscow, Russia), and world’s tallest building until 1970 (trumped by the North Tower of the World Trade Center, just 3.5 miles from the Empire). After the fall of the Twin Towers in 2001, the Empire State Building once again qualified as the tallest building in New York until 2012 (trounced, fittingly, by One World Trade Center). In 2011, the Empire State Building became as the tallest Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED)-certified building in the United States. As of 2015, the building is America’s fifth-tallest skyscraper, and the 30th-tallest in the world.

Ukraine-Russia war – latest: Moscow ready to strike French troops as UK sends Kyiv 1,000 drones

LIVE – Updated at 10:48

Russia is ready to strike French troops if they are sent to to Ukraine to help train Kyiv ’s soldiers, the Kremlin has suggested.

Ukraine’s top commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said French trainers would come to Ukraine “soon” last week, which was downplayed by both Paris and Kyiv .

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said: “No instructor involved in training the Ukrainian military has immunity. It doesn’t matter whether they’re French or not .”

In February, French president Emmanuel Macron said the situation in Ukraine was “dynamic” and nothing could be ruled out.

It comes as Britain is seeking to send 1,000 first-person view drones to Ukraine as part of an international support coalition.

The appeal, worth £300,000, calls for the procurement of up to 15 batches of 20 “first-person view racing quadcopter style drones”.

Meanwhile, Russian sources claimed that Ukraine fired American weapons at Belgorod for the first time after Washington lifted a ban on Kyiv using its weapons inside Russia.

The Ukrainians reportedly fired the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, at bordering Belgorod city, Russia’s defence ministry and military bloggers said.

Investigation claims Russian Orthodox Church ‘Russifying’ abducted Ukrainian children

An investigation has found the Kremlin-backed Russian Orthodox Church has played a role in “Russifying” the identities of Ukrainian children.

War monitoring think-tank The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) cited the investigation by Russian opposition student journal DOXA and open-source outlet Kidmapping.

The report found that in the early days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, officials deported children from orphanages and boarding schools in occupied Donetsk Oblast to Russia’s Rostov Oblast.

It was here that the report claims the children were visited by senior clergyman Metropolitan Mercury who encouraged them to consider baptism into the church.

Ukrainian children were also placed at shelters run by the church, where clergy and affiliated officials held “military-patriotic” events in an effort to encourage pro-Russian sentiment among the children and “cut the children off from their Ukrainian identities”.

Russian sociologist loses appeal against 5-year sentence for ‘justifying terrorism’

A Russian sociologist and activist had his appeal to overturn his five-year prison sentence on charges of “justifying terrorism” rejected.

Russia’s Supreme Court rejected Boris Kagarlitsky appeal on Wednesday after a petition calling for his release was signed by intellectuals and politicians from around the world including former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn

Kagarlitsky, 65, is a longtime political dissident and has spoken out repeatedly against the conflict in Ukraine in a magazine he edited and on his YouTube channel.

A former teacher at the prestigious Moscow Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences, Kagarlitsky was designated a “foreign agent” by the Russian government in 2018 and was last year added to a register of “terrorists and extremists”.

A Russian court handed him a 600,000-rouble fine in December 2023 after finding him guilty of “publicly justifying terrorism” in a video commenting on a Ukrainian attack on the bridge linking Russia to annexed Crimea in October 2022.

Russia is ready to strike French troops if they are sent to to Ukraine to help train Kyiv’s soldiers, the Kremlin has suggested.

Ukraine’s top commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said French trainers would come to Ukraine “soon” last week, which was downplayed by both Paris and Kyiv.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said: “No instructor involved in training the Ukrainian military has immunity. It doesn’t matter whether they’re French or not.”

Britain is pushing to deliver 1,000 first-person view drones to Ukraine as part of an international coalition in support of Kyiv.

According to a tender notice posted on the Government’s website, industry providers have been invited to submit bids to provide drones and equipment that can be fitted with armour-destroying munitions.

Ukraine says use of western weapons to strike inside Russia is ‘vital'

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff has said that using Western weapons to strike inside Russia was a vital step that would impact Moscow’s tactical aviation and its capability to operate in border areas.

Following pressure from Ukraine and some of its European allies, the US agreed last week to change its policy and allow Kyiv to strike inside Russia with Western weapons as part of its campaign to repel Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Kyiv said the move would help push back Russian advances and better defend territory in the northeast Kharkiv region.

“Permission to use Western weapons on the territory of the Russian Federation is a vital decision,” Andriy Yermak said on the Telegram messaging app. “This will impact the conduct of the war, planning of counteroffensive actions, and will weaken Russians’ abilities to use their forces in the border areas.”

The decision would also help to better fend off Russian aerial attacks, Mr Yermak said.

Russia has ‘robbed normal life for an entire generation of Ukrainian children’, Zelensky says

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has shared an emotional video depicting some of the children who have been killed since the start of the war.

He said: “Many little Ukrainians will never grow up because they were killed in Russian attacks.”

“Thousands have been kidnapped, transferred from Ukraine to Russia, and scattered among strangers. Most of them are unable to contact their families,” he added.

“The way Russia treats Ukraine and its people is a deliberate and calculated genocide.”

Ukraine shoots down 22 of the 27 Russian drones launched overnight

The Ukrainian air force said it downed 22 of the 27 Shahed-type drones launched over five Ukrainian regions in Russia’s overnight attacks.

One person was injured and an industrial facility was damaged in the attack in the region of Poltava, its governor, Filip Pronin, said on the Telegram messaging app.

The Ukrainian military destroyed six drones over the southern region of Mykolaiv, its governor said.Debris from one of them destroyed a private home, and damaged about 10 more, but no casualties were reported, he added.

Four drones were shot down over the southern region of Kherson and four more over the central Dnipropetrovsk region, the regions’ governors said.

The attack also targeted the northern region of Sumy, with no details of damage reported by regional authorities.

On Monday, Ukrainian forces claimed they struck inside Russian territory with Western-supplied weapons and hit a Russian S-300 missile system.

“It burns beautifully. It’s a Russian S-300. On Russian territory. The first days after permission to use Western weapons on enemy territory,” Ukrainian government minister Iryna Vereshchuk said.

She posted a picture of the alleged attack on Facebook.

Russian-linked hacker group 'targeting Paris Olympics'

The Paris Olympics are being targeted by a Russian-linked disinformation campaign, according to Microsoft.

Since last summer, efforts have been under way by a hacker group named Storm-1679, according to research.

The hackers “are trying to cultivate an anticipation of violence”, said Clint Watts, the head of Microsoft’s Digital Threat Analysis Centre. “They want people to be fearful of going to the Olympics.”

US embassy in Ukraine issues warning to dual citizens

The American embassy in Ukraine has announced that US-Ukrainian dual citizens will no longer be able to leave the country.

The notification comes after the Ukrainian government reportedly removed the exception that allowed some Ukrainian males between 18 and 60 to leave the country, as long as they could prove they were resident abroad.

“Previously, dual US-Ukrainian citizens in this group could enter and then depart Ukraine if they had deregistered their Ukrainian residency and registered their US residency,” the embassy statement reads. “According to our information, this exception was revoked as of 1 June.”

The Ukrainian government also passed a bill on the mobilisation of men into the military in April as it faces a shortage of manpower amid the ongoing war with Russia.

Eight including two children injured after Russian missile attack on Ukraine’s Dnipro

A Russian missile attack on Ukraine‘s central city Dnipro injured eight people, including two children, and damaged civilian infrastructure yesterday, Ukrainian authorities said.

The Ukrainian air force said it shot down two Iskander-K cruise missiles over the region. The missile debris damaged civilian infrastructure, causing a fire and injuring residents, according to Serhiy Lysak, the regional governor.

A month-old boy and a seventeen-year-old were among those injured, in addition to six adults, based on preliminary information from the governor and the state emergency services.

The attack damaged cars and knocked windows out in residential buildings and a hospital, Lysak wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

Dnipro mayor Borys Filatov added that at least 47 residences and a school were damaged.

Emergency services put out the fire caused by the attack.

Russian forces also launched four drones in the overnight attack. The Ukrainian air force said it shot down two of them over the northern region of Chernihiv.

Missile threat alert across Ukraine after aircraft intercepted

A missile threat alert was announced across the country after a MiG-31K aircraft took off overnight.

The Ukrainian Air Forces said they monitored the MiG-31K, an aircraft that can carry the Kinzhal hypersonic ballistic missiles that are being used by Russian forces to attack Ukraine.

China pushes Beijing’s version of Ukraine peace plan after snub to Switzerland

The Chinese foreign minister has continued to push Beijing’s potential role as a mediator in Ukraine-Russia peace talks, days after China withdrew from an upcoming peace summit in Switzerland.

Wang Yi told reporters that both Russia and Ukraine have separately indicated their support for the peace plan laid out by China and Brazil last month.

Mr Wang said the two countries have “affirmed most of the content” of the plan that called for an international conference, inviting both Russia and Ukraine.

He said 26 nations have agreed or expressed interest in the plan and a total of 45 countries have given “positive feedback” to the idea.

China is seen as a close ally to Russia, a fact that puts into question its ability to serve as an independent mediator, though Ukraine has not entirely ruled out the idea.

Biden to skip Switzerland’s Ukraine peace summit

US president Joe Biden is set to skip the upcoming Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland despite the Ukrainian president’s direct appeal to his most significant ally.

The US will instead be represented by vice president Kamala Harris and Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan during the two-day event on 15 and 16 June in Lucern, the White House said in a statement.

Mr Zelensky had said that only Vladimir Putin will “applaud” Biden if he fails to show up in Switzerland.

“I believe that the peace summit needs President Biden, and other leaders need President Biden because they will look at the US’s reaction,” Mr Zelensky said at a press conference in Brussels last week.

Mr Biden’s absence “would only be met by an applause by Putin – a personal, standing applause,” he added.

China has already pulled out of the summit after it expressed concerns over Russia not being invited.

The Kremlin has pressurised its allies not to take part in the summit, claiming it lacks clear goals and that it was absurd to hold it without Russia.

Britain to deliver 1,000 first-person view drones to Ukraine

The UK is expected to send 1,000 first-person view drones to Ukraine, according to a tender posted on the government’s website.

The government is inviting bidders to provide drones that are “capable of carrying varying payloads depending on their propeller size”, reported The Telegraph.

The notice called for 15 batches of 20 “first-person view racing quadcopter style drones” worth £300,000.

The potential delivery would be part of an international coalition launched by Britain and Latvia in February to supply unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to the front lines of Ukraine.

Russia calls French military instructors in Ukraine ‘legitimate target’

Russian foreign minister Sergi Lavrov said any French military instructors in Ukraine would be a “legitimate target” for Russian armed forces amid reports Paris was considering sending trainers to Kyiv.

During his Africa tour yesterday, Mr Lavrov claimed French instructors were already on Ukrainian territory.

“As for the French instructors, I think they are already on the Ukrainian territory,” Mr Lavrov said, referring to the military instructors that France could send to train Ukrainian troops. “Regardless of their status, military officials or mercenaries represent a legitimate target for our armed forces.”

Ukraine‘s top commander said last week he had signed paperwork allowing French military instructors to access Ukrainian training centres soon.

But French president Emmanuel Macron said last week he would not comment on “rumours or decisions that could be made.”

He said he would elaborate on France’s support during the 80th anniversary commemorations of D-Day later this week.

Mr Macron’s office said it would not comment on Mr Lavrov’s remarks.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that “instructors who train the Kyiv regime’s troops don’t have any sort of immunity, and it doesn’t matter whether they are French or not.”

Biden to meet Zelensky during France visit

President Joe Biden will meet Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky in Normandy during his D-Day celebration visit to France, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said.

He confirmed that the US was not planning to send American military trainers to Ukraine.

“For our part, we’re not planning for a training mission in Ukraine,” Mr Sullivan said.

“They need more air defences and we are working on that and they need a continued flow of weaponry which we will supply to them.”

The US president’s remarks in Normandy, both on Thursday at the formal 80th anniversary ceremony and on Friday at the famed Pointe du Hoc cliffs, will centre around the dangers of isolationism and the need to stand up to dictators, Mr Sullivan said.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has accused China of helping Russia to disrupt an upcoming peace conference on the war in Ukraine.

Speaking at Asia’s premier security conference in Singapore, Mr Zelensky alleged Russia had been using Chinese diplomats in the wider Asian region to influence and dissuade countries from attending the peace summit, due to be held in Burgenstock Resort, central Switzerland, on 15 and 16 June.

“Russia, using Chinese influence in the region, using Chinese diplomats also, does everything to disrupt the peace summit,” said Mr Zelensky at a news conference at the Shangri-La defence forum.

“Regrettably this is unfortunate that such a big independent powerful country as China is an instrument in the hands of [Russian leader Vladimir] Putin.”

Kremlin says Swiss summit on Ukraine is waste of time without Russia

The Kremlin said it was understandable that some countries were declining to take part in a Swiss-hosted peace summit on Ukraine this month because the gathering lacked clear goals and it was absurd to hold it without Russia.

Ukraine says more than 100 countries and organisations have agreed to attend the summit on June 15-16, to which Moscow has not been invited.

“This is a completely absurd activity, this is an idle pastime,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. He said it was obvious the meeting was not geared towards results, and “that’s why many countries don’t want to waste time.”

Over the past two years operating along the Ukrainian front line, Khrystyna Drahomaretska has gained a veteran’s understanding of the battle tactics employed by the invading Russian troops.

During the day, the 27-year-old explains, they will freely dispatch cheap kamikaze drones to kill anyone on sight. At night, however, the high-value drones equipped with hi-tech sensors are used more sparingly to target vehicles instead.

That was the calculation she made two weeks ago while conducting a daring night-time rescue operation a few hundred metres from the Russian positions near the city of Vovchansk in the Kharkiv region where Putin’s forces are currently pushing towards.

Mindful of the night vision drones, she ditched her van and crept towards her target on foot. But the enemy started firing anyway, with more than a dozen missiles launched towards her position.

Hiding behind a copse of trees, one exploded nearby sending a knuckle-sized piece of shrapnel searing straight through her leg.

Many soldiers will insist that killing their enemies is not personal. But when Stepan Barna’s suicide drone unit takes Russian soldiers’ lives, he does not disguise his feeling that every killing is a very personal payback for the death of his brother last year.

Stepan and his older brother, Oleh, were both well-known Ukrainian politicians long before Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Stepan had been the governor of the Ternopil region in the country’s west.

Oleh had been a member of the Ukrainian parliament. He gained notoriety in 2015 when he grabbed the then prime minister, Arseniy Yatseniuk, whose politics he disagreed with, while Yatseniuk was addressing the parliament, and dragged him off the podium.

Moscow could ‘attack Nato in three years’

Nato only has two to three years to prepare before Russia regains its ability to launch a conventional attack on the alliance, Norway’s top general said.

“At one point someone said it’ll take 10 years, but I think we’re back to less than 10 years because of the industrial base that is now running in Russia,” General Kristoffersen said.

“It will take some time, which gives us a window now for the next two to three years to rebuild our forces, to rebuild our stocks at the same time as we are supporting Ukraine.”

Ukraine using Western weapons to hit targets in Russia won't lead to escalation, says German chancellor

Ukraine’s use of Western-supplied weapons to strike targets in Russia will not “contribute to escalation,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said.

Germany has long opposed lifting the ban on Ukraine’s use of Western weapons to target Russia, but changed course last month.

“We are certain that it will not contribute to an escalation because, as Joe Biden has also described, it is only a matter of being able to defend a large city like Kharkiv,” Mr Scholz said.

Putin asks Xi to ‘snub’ Switzerland peace conference

Vladimir Putin reportedly asked Xi Jinping to snub an upcoming peace conference in Switzerland which Russia is not attending.

Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba stated on June 3 that Russia is trying to discredit the upcoming Ukrainian peace summit by convincing other states that the summit is insignificant.

Other Ukrainian officials have recently emphasized that it is imperative for both the United States and the PRC to attend the June 2024 peace summit as their participation is “decisive” in compelling Russia to participate in the process of restoring peace and security.

Russia and China in ‘disagreement’ over gas pipeline

Moscow and Beijing are in disagreement over a planned gas pipeline connecting Russia with China despite a public show of allignment, according to reports.

China and Russia disagree about the details of the PS - 2 gas pipeline, with Beijing wanting to pay prices near Russia’s subsidised domestic gas prices and to only commit to buying a small part of the pipeline’s planned capacity, the Financial Times reported.

Gazprom boss Alexei Miller did not accompany Russian President Vladimir Putin on his recent visit to the PRC due to the disagreements over the pipeline.

Russian missile attack on Dnipro injures seven, including two children

At least seven people, including two children, were injured as a Russian missile hit the central city of Dnipro, local officials said.

The missile attack in the early hours today by Russian forces also damaged civilian infrastructure.

Ukrainian air force said it shot down two Iskander-K cruise missiles over the region. The missile debris damaged civilian infrastructure, causing a fire and injuring residents, according to Serhiy Lysak, the regional governor.

Two boys were among those injured, in addition to five adults, based on preliminary information from the governor.

The attack damaged cars and knocked windows out in residential buildings and a hospital, Lysak wrote on Telegram.

Russian forces also launched four drones in the overnight attack but the Ukrainian air force said it shot down two of them over the northern region of Chernihiv.

Nearly 1300 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine in past 24 hours

Russian forces have lost 1,290 soldiers and more than 200 pieces of military equipment in the past 24 hours, senior Ukrainian military officials said in a daily update this morning.

A total of 512,420 Russian military personnel have been killed or injured since the invasion in February 2022, the update from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said.

The General Staff also reported 126 combat clashes took place on the war frontline over the past day.

“During the day, the Russian occupiers launched two missile attacks on the territory of Ukraine using six missiles and 37 air strikes using 51 UAVs, and launched 359 kamikaze drones. In addition, the occupiers fired over 2,100 times at the positions of our troops and settlements using various types of weapons,” it said.

The Russian Ministry of Defence does not comment on the casualty count of its troops shared by Kyiv.

White House says Ukraine has no stronger backer than US as Biden misses peace talks

Asked Monday if president Joe Biden was sending the wrong message globally by forgoing the peace summit to attend a glitzy California fundraiser, White House national security spokesman John Kirby said: “There hasn’t been any single leader around the world who has supported Ukraine more and more stridently than Joe Biden.”

He said vice president Kamala Harris will be attending the summit “because of our desire to be represented around that table” and her presence will help demonstrate that “Ukraine has no stronger backer than the United States”.

“No matter who represents the United States at this summit,” Kirby said during a virtual briefing with reporters, “It can’t be said that the United States has in any way walked away from supporting Ukraine.”

The US confirmed vice president Harris will represent Washington at this month’s global peace summit on the war in Ukraine. The summit, organised by Switzerland, will be led by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.

Kamala harris to represent us at swiss ‘peace summit’ for ukraine.

US vice president Kamala Harris will represent Washington at this month’s global peace summit on the war in Ukraine. The summit, organised by Switzerland, will be led by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.

Russia has not been invited, raising questions about what purpose the summit would serve without the participation of one of the parties to the conflict. China has declined to attend for this reason.

The White House said Ms Harris would attend the meeting in Lucerne on 15 June. President Joe Biden is scheduled to be at a campaign fundraiser in Los Angeles hosted by actors George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

“The vice president will underscore the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s effort to secure a just and lasting peace, based on Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity” and the principles of the UN charter, said her communications director Kirsten Allen.

She said Ms Harris will also “reaffirm support for the people of Ukraine as they defend themselves against ongoing Russian aggression”. Mr Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, will join Ms Harris as part of the US delegation.

Mr Zelensky has heavily boosted the summit and encouraged world leaders to attend, even as he has accused Russia of trying to undermine the meeting with China’s help.

Nato has two to three years to prepare for confrontation with Russia, says Norway’s top general

Norway’s top military general has warned that Nato’s window of preparing against Russian aggression has dwindled from 10 years to two-three years.

“At one point someone said it’ll take 10 years but I think we’re back to less than 10 years because of the industrial base that is now running in Russia. It will take some time, which gives us a window now for the next two to three years to rebuild our forces, to rebuild our stocks at the same time as we are supporting Ukraine,” said General Eirik Kristoffersen, the head of the Norwegian Armed Forces.

He said Russia’s positions near his country’s borders have not changed significantly over the past year and this allows Oslo to strengthen defence capabilities agreed upon within Nato.

“So we can fulfil those plans and those decisions with content in the next years, but we need to speed up. We need to do it in two to three years to make sure that we are ready for whatever might happen,” the top military official told Bloomberg.

Vladimir Putin’s defence minister Andrei Belousov has been asked by a group of Russian women to return their mobilised husbands from the war frontline in Ukraine, in a rare protest against the Kremlin.

One of the woman at yesterday’s protest, who gave her name as Paulina, said a group of 18 women had gathered to appeal personally to Belousov, an economist by training whom Putin appointed to the job last month.

Paulina, who said she was 20 years old and had a husband fighting in Ukraine, said the women want Belousov to impose strict limits on how long soldiers can serve before they must rotate out of active duty.

Pictures and videos Paulina published on Telegram showed women holding signs with slogans including “Please bring Papa home”. Several had brought along their school-aged children and toddlers in pushchairs.

No ministry officials came out of the building to speak with the women, Paulina said.

The protest showcases the anger and despair that has gripped some soldiers’ families as the war in Ukraine grinds on into its third year, with no end in sight.

The women’s protests are sensitive for the authorities, given that the Kremlin presents what it calls the “special military operation” in Ukraine as having the overwhelming support of the Russian people.

For months, different groups of Russian women have organised sporadic demonstrations to exert pressure on authorities to return their husbands, sons and brothers who were mobilised after a decree by Putin in September 2022.

Poland has arrested 18 people on allegations of planning hostile acts on behalf of Russia, Belarus

Poland has arrested 18 people on allegations of pursuing hostile activities or planning sabotage on behalf of  Russia  and Belarus, including plans to assassinate Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the interior minister said Monday.

Ten of those arrested since December were directly involved in planning various forms of sabotage across Poland, Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak told a news conference.

Polish authorities have linked some recent arsons or attempted arsons to Russian-sponsored agents. Polish, Belarusian and Ukrainian nationals are among those arrested in recent months, according to the Internal Security Agency’s communiques.

Italy to send second air defence system to Ukraine for Russian ballistic missiles

Italy will send a second SAMP/T air defence system to Ukraine, its foreign minister said in a radio interview, responding to Kyiv’s pleas for greater help to fend off Russian missile attacks.

The system, also known as MAMBA, is a Franco-Italian battery that can track dozens of targets and intercept 10 at once. It is the only European-made system that can intercept ballistic missiles.

Rome and Paris jointly delivered a first system in 2023, but in recent months Ukraine has repeatedly called on partners to provide more help with air defence as it faces an increasing barrage of attacks on cities and energy infrastructure.

“It is known that we will send SAMP/T, which is an instrument of air defence, therefore of protection, that Ukraine itself asked us for,” foreign minister Antonio Tajani told state broadcaster Rai, confirming earlier media reports.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Italy has approved eight support packages to the government of President Volodymyr Zelensky. Mr Tajani said the SAMP/T will be part of a ninth package under preparation, but did not give a time frame for delivery.

Russia intercepts 20 Ukrainian drones in Kursk

Russian air defence units intercepted 20 Ukrainian drones in southern Russia’s Kursk region bordering Ukraine, regional governor Alexei Smironov said last night.

The governor claimed that the Ukrainian forces attacked four villages in his region using attack drones and helicopters, but no injuries were reported.

In Belgorod region, to the southeast, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said air defence units had downed “several airborne targets”. Roofs of some dwellings were damaged.

Zelenskyy will participate in G7 summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will participate in the G7 summit later this month his spokesman has confirmed

He will attend the summit in southern Italy either online or in person from 13 to 15 June to participate in discussions about ways to use profits from frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine.

“Unfortunately, I cannot confirm or deny that the President will physically participate in the G7 summit, but in any case, whether online or physically, there is no doubt that he will be there,” the president’s spokesman, Sergey Nikiforov told Ukrainian television.

Unsafe to restart Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, UN official says

It will be unsafe to restart the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine as long as war rages around it, UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi said on Monday.

Grossi held a meeting with Russia on the issue last week after officials including President Vladimir Putin told him Moscow hopes to restart Europe’s biggest nuclear power plant, where the six reactors are now shut down as the International Atomic Energy Agency has recommended on safety grounds.

“The idea, of course, they have is to restart at some point. They are not planning to decommission this nuclear power plant. So this is what prompts the need to have a discussion about that,” Grossi told a news conference on the first day of a quarterly meeting of the IAEA’s 35-nation Board of Governors.

Russia said after last week’s meeting it is not currently planning to reactivate the plant. Grossi said some important steps need to be taken before it can restart safely.

“In terms of what needs to happen ..., there shouldn’t be any bombing or any activity of this type,” Grossi said.

“Then there should be a more stable assurance of external power supply. This requires repairs, important repairs of existing lines, which at the moment, and because of the military activity, are very difficult to envisage.”

Energy shutdowns hit Ukraine after Russian attacks target infrastructure

Ukraine imposed emergency power shutdowns in most of the country on Sunday, a day after Russia unleashed large-scale attacks on energy infrastructure and claimed it made gains in the eastern  Donetsk  province.

The shutdowns were in place in all but three regions of Ukraine following Saturday’s drone and missile attack on energy targets that injured at least 19 people.

Ukraine’s state-owned power grid operator Ukrenergo said the shutdowns affected both industrial and household consumers.

Italy likely to send second air defence system to Ukraine, source says

Italy will likely send a second SAMP/T air defence system to Ukraine, a source close to the matter told Reuters on Monday, responding to Kyiv’s demands for greater help to fend off Russian missile attacks.

The source, who declined to be named, confirmed newspaper reports that Italy was preparing to send a SAMP/T system which is deployed in Kuwait, but is soon due to return to Italy.

However, he did not give a timeframe for any delivery.

Corriere della Sera newspaper reported on Monday that the government could green light the new supplies after a summit of leaders of the Group of Seven major democracies, which Italy will host on June 13-15.

1,270 Russian casualties in 24 hours, Ukraine claims

Ukrainian officials have claimed Russia has suffered 1,270 casualties in the past 24 hours.

If correct, this would be one of the highest daily casualty figures since the war began in 2022.

Ukraine imposed emergency power shutdowns in most of the country on Sunday, a day after Russia unleashed large-scale attacks on energy infrastructure and claimed it made gains in the eastern Donetsk province.

Germany aims to order two more frigates to bolster defences

The German government wants to buy two further frigates provided parliament approves the deal, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Monday, as part of a policy shift to bolster its defences after Russia‘s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking in the Baltic port of Wolgast at a keel-laying ceremony for the first of four F126 frigates already ordered, he said he had reached a deal with the finance ministry to present parliament with a draft budget for two additional ships.

The F126 frigates comprise a core element of Germany’s so-called “Zeitenwende” (sea change) in defence policy initiated by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Germany needs six, not just four of them, Pistorius said.

“It (the frigate) was developed to play its part in our collective defence, it is crucial for a credible deterrence, in particular for the protection of our northern flank,” Pistorious told reporters at the ceremony.

The first frigate of the new type is expected to be delivered to the German navy in 2028. It will be capable of striking targets above and under water.

The first four ships will cost some 6.2 billion euros ($6.72 billion) and be built in the ports of Wolgast, Kiel and Hamburg with Dutch shipbuilder Damen as a general contractor.

The contract includes an option for two further ships.

Nearly 1,000 people honor a young Ukrainian journalist and volunteer combat medic killed in action

Nearly 1,000 people attended a ceremony Sunday honoring the memory of Ukrainian journalist Iryna Tsybukh, who was killed in action while serving as a volunteer combat medic a few days before her 26th birthday.

Tsybukh was killed while on rotation in the Kharkiv area, where Russia started its offensive nearly a month ago.

She had left a note describing how she wished the ceremony to be held, asking people to sing Ukrainian songs and attend in vyshyvankas — traditional embroidered shirts — instead of black clothes.
