While we always recommend spending as much time as possible in Portugal, 5 days is plenty of time to see the largest two cities – Porto and Lisbon. 

Our 5-day Portugal itinerary starts in the beautiful city of Porto, early in the morning. We recommend flying here instead of Lisbon as flights tend to be cheaper, particularly from the US and UK. 

This breathtaking city of Porto lies along the Douro river and is home to Port wine, iconic historical monuments, and francesinhas, a meat and cheese sandwich with a delicious beer sauce. 

After two days in Porto, you will head to the capital of Portugal, Lisbon . The birthplace of Amália Rodrigues, the iconic  Fado  singer, Lisbon is rich in culture, history, and striking views. 

Let’s take a look at our very own 5-day Portugal itinerary so you can make the most out of a short trip to Portugal!

Day 1: Porto

One of the oldest in Europe, Porto’s old town in the city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996, so we recommend starting there! Head to the Clérigos Tower  where after climbing the steps you can enjoy a 360 view of the city.

Then take a short walk to Livraria Lello, one of the oldest bookstores in the country with over a century of history. Although it used to be free, tickets now cost €5. Kids under 3 years old have free entrance.

For lunch, check out our  favorite restaurants in Porto. We recommend starting out your Porto cuisine experience with a francesinha at Casa Guedes or Tasquinha Ze Povinho.

After lunch, it’s time to unwind. Take a walk along Ribeira to enjoy the views of the Douro river. Then head to the Dom Luis I bridge that connects the Ribeira district to Vila Nova de Gaia. 

Built in 1886 by designer and co-founder of the Eiffel company Théophile Seyrig, visitors can walk across the 60-meter-high bridge on the upper level of the bridge.

Walking through the 1-kilometer bridge, you will have one of the best views of the Douro river, as well as easy access to Vila Nova de Gaia.

In Vila Nova de Gaia, head to a wine tasting in a Port cellar. Caves Ferreira is one of our favorite places. Founded by a family of winemakers in 1751, Caves Ferreira is the only wine company from Porto that has always remained Portuguese throughout its history. They offer port tastings at different prices but a great option is a Classic visit for €15 per person.

For a unique experience, stay in Vila Nova de Gaia for dinner. We recommend having dinner at sunset time in the Yeatman’s restaurant. Located in a luxurious 5-star hotel, the Yeatman restaurant has 2 Michelin stars and offers one of the best views of Porto across the Douro river.

Top Hotels in Porto

• NH Hotel Porto Jardim :  This four-star hotel feels like its five stars. It has a 70 cm deep outdoor people, a spa a few meters away, and a gym. It is located within walking distance of main attractions like Bolhão market, Aliados Avenue, and Ribeira. If you have a dog or cat, this hotel is pet-friendly.
• Vila Gale Porto :  Vila Gale is a well-known chain of hotels in Portugal and is always a safe option. This one was built in 1999 and recently renovated. The hotel has a spa with an indoor pool, a gym, a restaurant, and two bars.
• Hotel Premium Porto Downtown :  Located in the old town, this modern 4-star hotel has a sun terrace with views of the city of Porto, the perfect place to enjoy some port wine. You’ll be close to everything you need, Santa Catarina street, Aliados Avenue, and the cathedral.

Book Tours & Activities in Porto

Day 2: Porto

Start your second day in Porto with breakfast at Confeitaria Cristal in Cedofeita, a pastry shop. We recommend the courgette and ginger cookies, as well as the classic  pastel de nata with an espresso.

After breakfast, head to Aliados Avenue, one of the most popular streets in Porto. Some call it Porto’s Champs Elysées, featuring luxurious cafes and spots, such as Guarany, a famous piano bar.

The avenue also features a statue of D. Pedro IV to symbolize his battles for liberalism and courage, the perfect spot for a touristy photo.

Walk for less than 10 minutes to Igreja do Carmo. A combination of two buildings, the church is one of the oldest buildings in the historical center of Porto, one built in the 1600s and one in the 1700s. The church is built in baroque style and features blue azulejo tiles. 

You can enter the church for free! However, to visit the museum, catacombs, and Casa Escondida, there is a fee of €3.50.

Then walk for less than five minutes to the  Clérigos Tower  where after climbing the steps you can enjoy a 360 view of the city.

For lunch, head to Chama, which offers a unique gastronomical experience. This place primarily serves grilled food and “sustainable slow-burning food.” Alternatively, head to a Cozinha do Manel, a family-run restaurant that opened in 1989. With a rustic appeal, they specialize in meat and fish dishes.

We recommend booking a tour for the afternoon. This private boat tour allows you to see the Douro river with up to four people, passing through Porto’s historic bridges and Gaia’s caves. A welcome drink is included.

Alternatively, this Porto walking tour delves into the history of Porto with a professional guide. You will get to see the UNESCO World Heritage city center in more detail and learn how Port is made.

For dinner, head to Cantinho do Avillez, founded by the famous Portuguese Chef Jose Avillez. Cantinho do Avillez is incredibly well decorated, with a retro feel and a homely environment. The restaurant offers main courses such as risotto and octopus, as well as shared tapas. 

After dinner, head to a Fado house to listen to the iconic style of Portuguese music. Most fado houses offer you a Port wine glass to enjoy with the live show.  Book this Fado Live Show  in Porto for an intimate setting in Casa da Guitarra near Sé. 

Tomorrow morning you are off to Lisbon bright and early!

Day 3: Lisbon

Get the train early to Lisbon Santa Apolonia. If you are in the historical center, you can get a ticket from Sao Bento train station to Santa Apolonia. However, the train does not go directly to Lisbon, it first rides for 5 minutes to Campanha. Alternatively, get the train directly from Campanha. The train is around 3 to 4 hours, and the tickets cost around 30 euros.

You’ll probably arrive hungry so it’s time to head for lunch. If you’re in the mood for pizza, CasaNova is a 2-minute walk from the station. This place serves delicious pizzas cooked on a wood-burning stove and offers a terrace with views of the Tagus river. Take a look at the best restaurants in Lisbon here if you are looking for alternatives.

After lunch, walk a few more minutes to Terreiro do Paco, the harbor-facing plaza and one of the largest in Portugal. Here, you can visit the Wines of Portugal Tasting Room , a large modern tasting room with shared tables and wine starting at €1.

Then, head to Alfama. The oldest neighborhood in Lisbon and the home of fado, as well as Amalia Rodrigues’ birthplace. Explore the neighborhood and look out for Fado spots, as well as historical monuments such as the Lisbon Cathedral, the Convent of the Grace, and more.

Book a wine tasting in Lisbon

Walk towards Castelo de São Jorge, a medieval castle that overlooks the historical center of Lisbon from the fifth century. During the reign of Afonso I of Portugal in the twelfth century, it was altered and made into an official Royal Palace. It was then completely restored in 1938 by the dictatorship of Salazar as part of a commemoration of Portuguese patriotism and independence. Book a ticket to  skip the line .

Take tram 15E from Praca Figueira, a 10-minute walk from the castle, towards Belem. The 20-minute tram journey stops at some iconic spots such as Praca do Comercio and Santos. 

Belem lies along the Tejo Estuary and is home to two UNESCO sites, Torre de Belem and Mosteiro dos Jeronimos. 

Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is a former monastery in Belém constructed in Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style and you can visit the church for free.

A 2-minute walk from the monastery, head to Pasteis de Belem where the traditional Portuguese custard tart was first invented.

Then walk towards Torre de Belem. The 30m Belem Tower was built in the 1500s in Manuelino style, like the Jerónimos monastery. It was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. 

Belem has some great dinner spots, particularly for a sunset dinner. Portugalia Cervejaria is a classic franchise restaurant in Portugal that has tasty steak with a variety of sauces.

Alternatively, take the 30-minute train along the coast from Belem to Cascais for dinner. Head to Marisco na Praca in Cascais Marina, which serves quality seafood and fish dishes. Alternatively, at a more expensive price but even higher quality, Mar do Inferno in Boca do Inferno is one of the best seafood restaurants in Cascais, with views of the ocean.

Guide to Lisbon

Day 4: Lisbon

To start your last day in Lisbon, head to A Brasileira in Chiado, the heart of the city. A Brasileira is one of the oldest cafes in Lisbon that is still active. While it is expensive, having a coffee and toast on the terrace is a must-see experience in Lisbon for first-timers.

This main street in Chiado has many stores and boutiques for shopping, as well as Livraria Bertrand. Livraria Bertrand holds the Guinness world record for the world’s oldest bookstore still in operation, founded in 1732. 

Then walk for 5 minutes towards Santa Justa Lift, also known as Elevador do Carmo, a 45m tall elevator built by Raoul Mesnier in 1902, an architecture student of the man who built the Eiffel Tower. Its purpose was functional, but now it has turned into one of the most popular tourist attractions. From the top of the lift, you can enjoy a view of the Baixa Pombalina. 

For lunch, go to Cevicheria, a restaurant specializing in Portuguese cuisine and the traditional Peruvian dish, ceviche. We recommend trying the Portuguese ceviche, with octopus, codfish, and potatoes, as well as the tuna and foie gras ceviche. 

For a more authentic Portuguese restaurant with a more relaxed environment, head to Adega da Tia Matilde, a Lisbon local favorite for decades. Well-known for its friendly hospitality, Adega da Tia Matilde has some of the best duck dishes and large shrimps in the city.

After lunch, book a guided tour of the city so you can see as much as possible in the little time you have in Lisbon.

This 3-hour tuk-tuk tour of the city goes through the city’s oldest neighborhoods and main attractions, riding up and down the hills of Lisbon (which you do not want to walk).

If you want more flexibility, book this 24-hour bus ticket in the morning which allows you to visit different routes and hop in as you would like. 

After your tour, head to Principe Real to explore. One of the trendiest neighborhoods in Lisbon, Principe Real has the best restaurant, bars, and art galleries in the city, as well as stunning nineteenth-century buildings and plenty of green spaces. 

Have dinner at BouBou’s in Principe Real, a restaurant offering a variety of international dishes from pork belly, and octopus to lamb kebabs. This place has an outdoor patio with sparkling lights and banana trees, perfect for enjoying one of their cocktails. 

After dinner, walk to Bairro Alto, the most popular bar area where the nightlife comes to life. We recommend Ze dos Bois Gallery, a musical center that has live music and serves tasty drinks.

• Bairro Alto Hotel: This hotel is situated in the best location in Lisbon, between Bairro Alto and Chiado, in an 18th-century building in central Lisbon. The hotel features a restaurant with award-winning Chef Nuno Mendes and Executive Chef Bruno Rocha.

Day 5: Fly Back!

The low season is winter, the very beginning of spring, and the tail end of fall. This leaves most of April and May (excluding Easter), plus September and October, as the shoulder season .

Besides being crowded, expensive, and busy, summers in Portugal can be very hot, while winter can be rainy and cold. The best time to visit Portugal is in the autumn or spring , when you may have pleasant weather and enjoy visiting with fewer crowds.

Every season and every month of the year has its highlights. Here are the best times to visit Portugal by season and month.

Although it can be cool and rainy in Portugal in the winter , Portuguese winters would be considered mild (and the country stays largely snow-free) in most areas, especially when compared to many parts of the U.S.

And if you’re hoping to avoid tourists, you won’t find many at this time of year (outside of the Christmas holidays). This means less crowded attractions and more (and cheaper) accommodation options. Winter is an optimal time to visit Portugal if you’re on a budget . You may also be able to find award availability on TAP Air Portugal flights in months like January or February.

Visiting Portugal in December

While the northernmost part of the country can face rain and cooler temperatures, December is a nice time to visit the capital, Lisbon , where festive decor and twinkling lights (especially around Rossio Square) mean the city comes alive with holiday cheer.

The city’s version of a Christmas market is Wonderland Lisboa , located in Edward VII Park, where, you’ll find a Ferris wheel and market stalls with holiday wares.

Down south in the Algarve region, hiking and golfing are popular activities . You’ll actually have a chance of getting some warm-ish temperatures and sunshine on some days! Similar to December, north Portugal remains colder and rainier than down south , where spots like the Algarve may be pleasant (not quite sunbathing weather, but warm-ish if you’re lucky). Destinations like Lisbon and Sintra are practically void of tourists , meaning you can explore without crowds and find low rates for hotel rooms and vacation rentals.

Visiting Portugal in February

Portugal is full of romantic spots for a honeymoon or Valentine’s Day getaway. Cruise the Venice-like canals of Aveiro in a colorful boat (known as a moliceiro) or wander the fairytale castle in Sintra. Spring has sprung in Portugal in April, so most of the country’s trees and flowers will be starting to bloom, though you may also see some rain showers . Celebrate Liberty Day with the locals on April 25, which is the day the country’s dictatorship ended in 1974. Expect parades, music, and cultural events in many cities and towns to mark the event. May — distinctly part of shoulder season — is a magical time to visit all of Portugal . The Flower Festival takes place in Madeira for almost the entire month . Beyond that, you can expect blue skies and warm weather throughout most of the country without the crowds that summer brings. May (specifically, May 13) is the most popular time for a pilgrimage to the site of Fátima , celebrating the moment the Virgin Mary appeared to a group of 3 children.

While summer is the most crowded and most expensive time to visit Portugal, it’s also the best time of year to enjoy lazy beach days, balmy nights, and Atlantic island adventures. Visiting Portugal in June

June is probably the least crowded of the 3 summer months , so if you’re hoping to get in before the rush, your last opportunity to do so is June. This month is also the time to visit the Azores, where you’ll experience weather perfect for hiking and exploring.

The São João Festival is celebrated in Porto , timed with the summer solstice, so join in on late-night street parties, bonfires, fireworks, and revelry. Lisbon’s festas happen during this month, featuring food markets, live fado music, processions, and more. Although sandy stretches will be crowded and lively, the refreshing, cooling waters of the Atlantic will keep you cool, unlike many of Europe’s beaches, which sit upon the warmer waters of the Mediterranean.

It’s a pleasant time to visit some of the country’s lesser-known attractions, like the Serra da Estrela mountain range, the highest in peninsular Portugal, or some of the smaller Azores Islands, such as Pico, which has its Festa das Vindimas (wine harvest) the first week of September. Madeira also puts on a wine festival, which lasts the first half of September.

Runners may want to visit Lisbon in October to cheer on the participants of the EDP Lisbon Marathon (October 6, 2024). While perfect weather isn’t guaranteed in November , you’ll definitely win in terms of budget and crowds. Lodging and activities are relatively affordable at this time of year, and you may just be visiting tourist attractions all on your own (though perhaps underneath rainy skies).

A Portugal Family Road Trip: 14-Day Itinerary of Kid-Friendly Wonders and Cultural Delights!

We rented a car and took our little family on a Portuguese road trip of a lifetime. Read on to find a 2+ week road trip itinerary through Portugal with a toddler and preschooler, visiting the following places:

Day 1: Caldas da Rainha

Day 2: óbidos, day 3: aveiro, day 4-6: porto, day 7-8: sintra, day 9-11: lisbon, day 12-13: algarve, day 14: lisbon, 2+ week road trip itinerary through portugal with kids.

Located about 1.5 hours from Lisbon, Caldas offered an immersive Portuguese experience for our family on our first day. If you visit, you should:

• Play in the park
• Visit the fruit market
• Eat delicious pastries

This city was a great place to get our bearings at the beginning of our trip, and a nice launching off point to visit Óbidos . 

Drive about 1 hour north of Lisbon or fifteen minutes west of Caldas da Rainha to find the adorable, romantic, and picturesque town of Óbidos. Be sure to:

• Try cherry liqueur in a chocolate cup
• Climb the castle walls
• Enjoy music at the Porta de Vila gate

This was probably the highlight of my trip, so…you must stop here.

Drive about 1.5 hours north of Óbidos to Aveiro, the “Venice of Portugal.” We recommend you:

• Take a canal tour on a historic moliceiro boat
• Eat ovos moles, a local dessert
• See the striped houses in the Bairro dos Pescadores in Costa Nova

Stop here for a day on your way to Porto . We wished we had more time to explore the beaches and lighthouse.

Drive one hour from Aveiro to Porto . Spend a few days drinking wine, seeing the sights, and enjoying the history. Be sure to:

• Climb the Clérigos Tower
• Visit the Livraria Lello
• Walk the bridge or take the cable car to port wine tasting at Cais de Ribeira

I loved all of the blue tiles, my husband loved the port wine, and my toddler loved the many baby Jesus statues on display at every museum or church. There is something for everyone in Porto! 

Drive three hours south from Porto to Sintra. Sintra is a magical place, full of castles, villas, and grottos. Spend at least one day in Sintra to:

• Visit the Pena Palace
• Explore Quinta da Regaleira
• Climb the Moorish Castle
• Wander the historic streets of downtown Sintra

Many visitors come to Sintra via train from Lisbon as a day trip. I highly recommend you stay for at least two days in order to see more castles at a kid-friendly pace.

Drive 45 minutes from Sintra to Lisbon to spend a few days in Portugal’s capital. Make sure you:

• Visit the Castelo de São Jorge
• Walk through the roofless Convento da Ordem do Carmo

The historic city is bustling with activities and delicious places to eat . 

The drive from Lisbon to the Algarve, or the southern coastal region of Portugal, is about three hours. Stop in Alcácer do Sal  for lunch on your way down. Once you reach the Portuguese Riviera, make sure you:

• Enjoy the beaches
• Play at the indoor water park
• See the Cabo de São Vicente lighthouse
• Go for a hike 

The Algarve is a popular tourist destination in the summer months but was mostly empty when we visited in December.

We made the drive back to Lisbon in the morning, arriving in time to grab lunch before our afternoon return flight home. 

Portugal was the perfect place for our little family to explore. Everywhere we went, we saw beautiful historic buildings, castles, and stunning views. We ate delicious food, tried delicious wine, and left feeling very welcome and safe. 

Since our flight into Portugal was round-trip from Lisbon, it felt difficult to plan a trip that started and ended at a location that was basically in the middle of the country. If I could do it again, I might have spent more time in Porto, flowing up the Douro River, and would definitely have stayed in a castle somewhere overnight. Next time!

I was surprised to see so few mixed-race couples, and honestly so few BIPOC locals. Most of the locals we met where white, and while they were well-meaning and overall very kind to us, they made me wonder where all the brown people were.

Still, overall I would highly recommend anyone to take their family to Portugal. It was beautiful, safe, full of delicious eats, easy to navigate, and relatively inexpensive as compared to many other European countries.

All good with that itinerary but why travel up and then down and then up again? I’d start from Porto down to Lisbon continuing down to Algarve and finish there.

Hi Hugo! I totally agree. It was cheaper for us to fly in and out of Lisbon, so we had to start in the middle of the country and travel North to get to Porto. We debated skipping the Algarve all together so we would avoid the back and forth, but are glad we decided to go there despite the extra travel time.

Going on this trip with Eleazar was amazing and would 100% go on another trip with him as the leader! Well organized itinerary that was thought out and executed with great communication prior and during the trip. Felt as is I knew him as long lost friends reconnecting for an amazing vacation. Sarah was a great host! Lots of communication between her and the group of girls I went with, so when we all met up it felt like we were already friends. She was super knowledgeable and was able to answer all our questions before and during the adventure! Everyone was able to break off and do whatever we wanted in our down time, some went out for nightlife while others stayed back in and relaxed at the super nice hostels she picked out. Napa Valley is synonymous with luxury. Posh hotels, chef-driven restaurants and extravagant tasting fees cemented that reputation decades ago.

But at its core, Napa is farm country— a place where people dig in the dirt and make a living from the land. Despite all odds, this gives Napa a grounded feeling, even in its swankiest spaces. At the end of the day, visitors come to Napa Valley because they love food, wine and beautiful scenery. It’s a passion shared by the community of this incredible locale. 

The five towns of Napa Valley (St Helena, Yountville, the city of Napa , Calistoga  and American Canyon) are home to 16 wine appellations and more than 400 wineries. The options can be daunting to first-time visitors but we’re here to help. From mud baths in Calistoga to tips for visiting wineries, our first-timer’s guide to Napa Valley will give you everything you need to know to plan a trip here, including the best hotels, wineries, restaurants and activities.

When is the best time to visit Napa? 

It’s always a good time to visit Napa in our book, however, the timing of your trip will impact your experience. Peak tourist season is in summer when the average high temperature is 82°F. If you plan to visit this time of year, you’re unlikely to find any bargains. Make your reservations for lodging, restaurants and wineries as far in advance as you can.

Spring and fall are the next busiest times of the year. Spring brings average high temperatures of 68°F while in fall, high temperatures average 78°F. The lower, but still pleasant, temps are especially appealing for visitors who plan to hike, bike or engage in other outdoor activities. 

Winter temperatures reach an average high of 60°F. This season gets the most rain (although this is California so there will still be plenty of dry, beautiful days). Since winter is the least crowded, it is the most affordable time to visit Napa with many hotels, resorts and spas advertising special packages and discounts off their regular rates.

How much time should I spend in Napa? 

Set aside three to four days for your Napa Valley itinerary. This allows enough time to visit your top wineries and restaurants, plus time for other activities like spa treatments, hiking, lounging by the pool or riding the wine train.

What are the top things to do in Napa Valley? 

Most people come to Napa to visit wineries – more on that later – but don’t overlook Napa’s exceptional culinary, wellness and recreation opportunities.

You can get filthy (in the best possible way) at the north end of the county in Calistoga. Calistoga is recognized around the world for mud made with a mixture of mineral-packed volcanic soil and water drawn from local hot springs. The two most common treatments involve painting it on your body or soaking in a tub of warm, nurturing mud. At least seven spas offer Calistoga mud experiences including the luxurious Spa Talisa at the Four Seasons Resort and Residences and the do-it-yourself mud bar at MoonAcre Spa and Baths . 

Calistoga is also home to two of Napa Valley’s most unique natural attractions. The Old Faithful Geyser is a smaller, but still impressive version of Yellowstone’s most famous jet spout . In Calistoga, Old Faithful shoots hot water 30–80ft towards the sky every 10 to 20 minutes. Just outside of Calistoga at the Napa/Sonoma border, a three million-year-old petrified forest with 1.5 miles of hiking trails provides a fascinating glimpse at geological history. 

No trip to the valley would be complete without a trip to downtown Napa’s Oxbow Public Market ,  a 40,000-sq-ft marketplace packed with locally sourced culinary delights. From California-grown olive oil at the Olive Press to artisan cheeses at the Oxbow Cheese and Wine Merchant , this is the place to stock up for a picnic or edible souvenirs. You’ll also find a bookstore, distillery, bakeries and restaurants. After you’ve finished browsing, find a seat on the riverfront deck out back to sample fresh oysters on the half shell from Hog Island Oyster Bar .  

With menus centered around locally-grown ingredients, Napa is almost as famous for fine dining as it is for wine. Food this fresh is revelatory. A dish, such as fermented soy dip served with raw vegetables pulled from the ground at the Charter Oak , will ruin you forever for grocery store veggies. Other bucket-list dining experiences include the six-course prix-fixe chef’s tasting menu at La Toque , the daily tasting menu at the French Laundry , and Kenzo Napa , where seafood is flown in daily from the finest fish market in Japan. Please note that reservations at these restaurants are coveted, and should be made as far as possible in advance. 

Don’t let these vaunted names fool you into thinking you need to spend a fortune to get a good meal in Napa. The valley is filled with scores of reasonably-priced restaurants including Heritage Eats in Napa where you can feast on comfort foods like a smoked ham bowl or white cheddar mac and cheese for less than $15 a person. For tasting menus, Thomas Keller’s ad hoc offers a daily tasting menu currently priced at $56 a person for lunch or $69 a person at dinner. The  Gate House Restaurant at the Culinary Institute of America offers three courses prepared by student chefs for $35 at lunch or four courses for $45 at dinner (please note that restaurant prices are always subject to change). 

For nightlife, the Blue Note Napa Jazz Club hosts an exciting mix of live performances ranging from household names to rising stars and tribute bands. It also holds the Summer Sessions outdoor concert series and the Black Radio Experience at the Meritage Resort and Spa . If you’re on the hunt for a good dive bar, Ana’s Cantina in downtown St Helena is the place for a game of pool, tunes from the jukebox and a stiff drink.

Other top activities in Napa Valley include hiking or biking the 12.5-mile  Napa Valley Vine Trail , which will eventually extend 47 miles from Vallejo to Calistoga.

Tips for visiting wineries in Napa 

Gone are the days when you can walk into virtually any Napa Valley winery and ask for a tasting without an appointment (or even a fee). Although there are a few wineries like Hall Wines in St Helena, where walk-ins are welcome, reservations are required at most wineries in Napa Valley. This helps ensure the wineries have adequate time to guide you through your tasting. From the guest's perspective, appointments are helpful when it comes to budgeting, arranging transportation and planning your Napa itinerary.

The average wine tasting fee in Napa Valley is $40 per person but it isn’t unusual for prices to climb to $200 or even more. Most wineries have a menu of tasting options, with standard tastings at the low end and premium experiences with food pairings, library wines, or guided tours commanding a higher price. Please note that the tip is not included in the tasting price so it will need to be factored into your budget. 

Expect to spend at least 90 minutes at each winery (often longer for premium experiences). For this reason, it’s best to stick to no more than two or three tasting room visits a day. We recommend clustering each day’s reservations in the same area so you won’t have to rush between wineries. For instance, in the Stag’s Leap District, Cliff Lede Vineyards and Baldacci Family Vineyards are only a mile apart. Cliff Lede’s Backstage Lounge Tasting Room Experience offers an elevated tasting with premium wines in a room filled with rotating art and rare rock memorabilia. At Baldacci, the Cave Tour and Tasting Experience includes a cave tour and barrel tasting followed by a seated tasting paired with seasonal appetizers. 

In the Rutherford area, Sullivan Winery is only half a mile from the Prisoner Wine Company . At Sullivan, the Merlot Mastery Tasting starts with a tour of the gardens and grounds before moving on to a seated tasting with two flights of its prized merlot accompanied by light bites. At Prisoner, you’ll find many culinary pairings including the Wine and Dim Sum Experience. 

Attire is wine country casual. A pair of nice jeans, golf shirts, sundresses or casual blouses are the norm in Napa Valley. Do wear comfortable shoes, especially if you plan to walk through the vineyards or participate in a tour.

Expert tip: The Covet Pass offers complimentary tastings at seven Napa wineries and seven Sonoma wineries, plus additional discounts for a one-time fee of $150. 

How to get around in Napa without a car

Napa Valley is 30 miles long and stretches at most 5 miles wide. In this sense, Napa is small and easy to navigate, but driving can be tricky in a destination centered around wine. Luckily, if you don’t have a designated driver there are several ways to get around Napa without a car. 

The Napa Valley Wine Train offers several tasting journeys including a 36-mile roundtrip through gorgeous scenery to disembark for seated tastings at Charles Krug Winery and V. Sattui Winery . A four-course lunch is served onboard. You can also hitch a ride to three tasting rooms in an open-air San Francisco cable car on the Napa Valley Wine Trolley . 

Many tour operators provide transportation to Napa wineries. Several, like Napa Valley Wine Country Tours , offer a choice between public group tours, which are less expensive, or private tours with a customized itinerary. 

If you prefer to get around by foot, base yourself in the cities of Napa or Yountville. Napa has more than 50 downtown tasting rooms and there are 14 walkable tasting rooms in downtown Yountville. 

Where to stay

If there was ever a place to treat yourself to a nice hotel, it’s Napa Valley. The region is home to some of the best hotels in the country, with grounds and accommodations so astonishingly beautiful you might not want to leave to go wine tasting (but definitely leave to go wine tasting). If you’re in the position to splurge our top picks are: 

The Poetry Inn is an exclusive property with only five guest rooms and a small, on-site spa. The all-suite hotel is the epitome of privacy and luxury with huge guest rooms featuring private sitting areas, outdoor patios, and indoor and outdoor showers with stunning hillside or vineyard views. A gourmet multicourse breakfast is included with each stay. Poetry Inn is the only hotel in the Stag Leap district. 

Meadowood Napa Valley in St Helena is set on a magnificent 250-acre estate with mature, oaks and native plants surrounding 36 suites and guest rooms with soaking tubs and private outdoor sitting areas. Hiking trails, tennis courts, swimming pools, a Wine Center and a tranquil spa ensure you’ll never lack activities during your stay. 

Carneros Resort and Spa offers standalone cottages and homes surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards in Napa. Amenities include a luxurious onsite spa, two swimming pools, pickle ball courts with an adjacent Veuve Clicquot Champagne Bar and Lounge, a complimentary buffet breakfast, and access to Cadillac Luxury Vehicles during your stay. 

If a mid-range hotel is better suited for your budget we recommend the Meritage Resort and Spa or Silverado Resort . The Meritage offers perks like a complimentary shuttle service to downtown Napa and a verdant lawn surrounded by tasting rooms and an upscale market. At the Silverado Resort, amenities include golf courses, bocce ball courts, a pool and a fitness center.

The most affordable lodging options in Napa Valley are generally found in American Canyon, which offers several reliable, reasonably-priced chains such as the DoubleTree by Hilton Napa Valley American Canyon and Holiday Inn Express and Suites Napa Valley American Canyon .

My favorite thing to do in Napa 

When I come to Napa I love to take a class to enhance my appreciation of food and wine or learn a fun, new skill. I’ve never been anywhere else where classes are so varied and accessible, so I take advantage whenever I can. Often, these classes are offered directly through my hotel. The Wine Center at Meadowood Napa Valley runs classes ranging from introductory tutorials on Napa wine to advanced courses on subjects like the history of the wine label. Carneros Resort and Spa has a dazzling array of daily classes focusing on everything from sabering champagne bottles to pickleball. 

The Culinary Institute of America is my hands-down choice for cooking classes with options for group or private instruction. I’ve also found classes offered at Napa Valley wineries. Bouchaine Vineyards regularly hosts an exciting roster of sessions on topics like pairing wine and cheese, blending wine and even falconry. 

How much do you need to budget for a trip to Napa?

The amount you’ll need to spend on a trip to Napa is highly variable depending on your itinerary and even the season you choose to visit. Although it is generally considered a luxury destination, you can still plan an affordable trip to Napa with the tips and tricks in this first-timer’s guide. The numbers below are not definitive but will provide a general idea of how much it costs for budget-conscious, midrange, and luxury travelers to visit Napa.

Unboxing and Setup is Easy

Getting started with the Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub Pro takes just a few minutes. After unboxing the hub itself, you’ll need to grab the power cords. Since this is a powered unit, the power equipment is large and extensive and actually takes up more room than the hub itself.

Attach the power cord to the plug on the hub and then into the included power brick. The power brick has the actual plug. I had to find a specific place in my desk’s cord management system to place the brick because it was so large—it reminds me of an old-school PC laptop power supply. Though it’s quite large, there is good news. The 150W power supply can output up to 96W of power to the host device, perfect for Mac laptops like the current-generation 14-inch MacBook Pro.

Satechi also includes an almost 3-foot Thunderbolt 4 cable that you can attach directly into your machine. While Thunderbolt hubs like this are mostly favored by Mac fans, you can also use it with a number of modern iPads and some Windows machines. I tested the hub mostly with my 2021 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro chip.

Just to note, even though it is a Thunderbolt 4 hub, it’s backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C.

A Beautiful Design That Compliments Your Mac

I usually don’t worry about how something looks on my desk, but the Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub Pro just looks great. The top, bottom, and sides are covered with a space gray aluminum that closely matches the same color of various Macs.

On the bottom are four, non-skid feet to help prevent the hub from sliding around your desk with just a bit of movement. Both of the longest sides, where the ports are located, are covered with a similar black material. Sloping down from the top are chamfered sides.

Overall, the hub is 12.2 inches long, 2.91 inches long, and just 0.71 inches deep. It weighs 8.5 ounces. So if you can find a spot for the power cord, the hub won’t take up tons of space on a desk. Since I don’t have a dedicated office space at my home, my desk is very small and tucked into the side of a living area, so was really nice to use the Satechi hub without having to rearrange and remove items from my desk.

The hub is even small enough that it shouldn’t be a huge burden to take with you while traveling, with one caveat. Make sure to keep any sharp items away from the aluminum as I suspect it might easily scratch if it rubs up against a set of keys or something else sharp.

Powerful Thunderbolt Ports

On the front of the dock is the upstream Thunderbolt 4 port that can provide up to that 96W of power along with a maximum of 40Gbps of data.

Next to it is the USB 3.2 Gen 2 port provides a maximum of 10 Gbps. It’s also backwards compatible with older USB-A devices. I would have liked to have seen the port be moved a bit further from the upstream Thunderbolt 4 connector. When trying out a wide variety of different devices, some of my chunkier USB cords and a larger USB thumb drive were a very tight fit because of the port’s proximity to each other.

Finally, on the far right is a power button that turns green to let you know the hub is on and active.

On the other side of the hub is the power outlet for the brick and three downstream Thunderbolt 4 plugs that can provide up to 15W of power each. That should be enough to fast charge your iPhone with MagSafe connector.

All of the downstream connectors can also be used for video output. On the Mac, you can use dual 4K displays at 60Hz or a single 6K display at 60Hz. Windows is a bit better with dual 4K displays at 60Hz or a single 8K display at 60Hz.

Only one external display is supported on a Mac with the base-level M1/M2/M3 processor. That’s a disappointment, as one of the best use-cases for a hub like this is for a dual-monitor setup.

Works Well and Doesn’t Heat Up

I’ve used the Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub Pro for around two weeks with my MacBook setup and haven’t experienced any issues. I used the hub for a wide variety of tasks like device charging, using a variety of peripherals like printers and hard drives, and with my main 38-inch Dell 4K display.

The connection to my display worked well without any flickering or other issues sometimes seen with Thunderbolt hubs. I used the hub to charge my MacBook Pro, and it charged just as fast as with Apple’s 96W adapter.

Another issue, sometimes found on Thunderbolt hubs, is that they can become warm or even hot to the touch when charging devices or during a large transfer. I previously used an older Thunderbolt 3 hub that became so hot, I was afraid my hand might have been slightly burned.

But that’s not the case with Satechi’s option. It’s designed to dissipate and regulate heat and operate between 86 and 122-degrees Fahrenheit during use. At least in my testing, the hub got mildly warm at most, nothing near the top of its range.

My only other small issue after testing, is that I had a bit of a hard time orienting the hub correctly because the usable Thunderbolt plugs were on the back of the dock. I would have loved to have seen the power cable plug placed with the single upstream and USB 3.2 port instead. That would make it easier to access the plugs without having to deal with the power cord snaking on my desk.

Should You Buy the Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub Pro?

If you’re looking for a traditional hub with tons of legacy ports, a SD card slot, and HDMI, the Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub Pro definitely isn’t for you. With only a single USB-A port, you’ll have enough room for a single device like a keyboard, mouse, or hard drive. Most likely, you’ll need to spend a bit more for something like a more powerful, and expensive, docking station.

But if you’d like a modern hub with tons of Thunderbolt 4 ports, and power to charge up pretty much any laptop and other devices, the Satechi is a nice option that doesn't cost tons. It looks great on any desk, and it is small enough to pack up for travel easily. Just make sure to find a secure place for it in your travel bag so the beautiful exterior doesn’t get scratched.

FIU in Chicago: How a group trip to visit top PR agencies helped me refine my career path

As my graduation date approaches, in December of this year, I wanted to improve my networking skills and establish career goals. As a public relations, advertising and communications (PRAAC) major, I also wanted an opportunity to view my classroom knowledge through the lens of the real world. Luckily, I learned about the  FIU School of Communication’s PRCrawl, which takes a small group of students to the Windy City to do all of those things by visiting communications agencies and meeting with their executives.

As an account executive with FIU’s student-led strategic communications agency BOLD and a consultant to the online platform Parker Dewey,  which connects recent graduates with employers,  I had experiences that confirmed I wanted to pursue a communications-focused career. I was unsure, however, in which area I would flourish: public relations, marketing or advertising. I decided the trip to Chicago was a prime opportunity to shape my future.

Along with eight other students and Professor Hugo Ottolenghi from the School of Communication, we began with visits to agencies Team Lewis and Motion, where we heard about the creative campaigns they manage and the inner workings of their media relations departments. At Team Lewis, the agency’s marketing and engagement manager answered my questions and gave me personal advice on being authentic and honest when contacting news reporters and editors on behalf of my public relations clients. He reiterated that the best way to pitch story ideas was to be candid, concise and confident.

At Motion, three creative directors explained the creative process for campaigns and stressed the importance of mastering organizational skills. I found the real-world advice and suggested techniques for success incredibly valuable. That evening, we debriefed over Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizza by sharing the numerous ways the agencies provided us with career and academic clarity.

On day two, we started at the ad agency Digitas, where the human resources recruiter emphasized the importance of building a diverse team and treating everyone like the unique and creative individuals they are. As a queer student, hearing that inclusivity is a foundational pillar of such an established agency was motivating and heart-warming. I felt reassured that I will be entering an industry that is dedicated to diversity among its employees.

Our afternoon visit to the NBC TV affiliate confirmed what I had already been thinking: that I want to pursue a career as an account executive. There, we conversed with Joel Negro, an FIU graduate who is a digital sales planner for NBCUniversal Local. We talked about the role of an account executive and how no two days are the same. As I enjoy working on different tasks and communicating with diverse individuals, I felt increasingly that this is the position for me.

On the last day, our early-morning session with marketing and public relations executives at the Chicago Transit Authority confirmed my decision. The senior manager of communications described the processes for managing creative teams, sustaining media partnerships and promoting accessibility-focused initiatives.

The rest of the day was all about landing internships, and we heard about available opportunities during our final two visits. At the advertising, marketing and public relations agency Oglivy, executives shared with us their career experiences, educational backgrounds and typical workdays. They explained that successful account managers require strong organizational, project managment, time-management and presentation skills, all of which I have been exercising this semester. At Zapwater Communications, the company CEO and her team stressed the importance of writing skills.

Through the trip, I learned much about myself and honed my career goals. I now know that I want to work in an agency setting that promotes a positive company culture. I also came to the conclusion that I want to pursue a master’s degree in strategic communications and start my career as an account executive. As I work toward those goals, I will apply both knowledge gained during my FIU education and the suggestions of the communications professionals that FIU helped connect me with.

The Milwaukee Brewers called up infielder Tyler Black on Tuesday, adding the hot-hitting 23-year-old to an already young and inexperienced lineup.

Black, from Stouffville, Ont., was summoned from triple-A Nashville ahead of the Brewers game against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays to add some punch to a struggling offence.

"He's coming on," Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. "He's a really good athlete and moves really well left to right. It's just experience that he lacks. That's kind of a theme for us."

Black, the son of longtime Canadian sports broadcaster Rod Black, was off to a tremendous start at Nashville. In 117 plate appearances, Tyler Black was batting .303 with three triples, five home runs and 18 runs batted in while compiling a .919 on-base-plus slugging percentage.

Rod Black was in Cancun, Mexico when he received a call from Tyler about his call to the majors and hopped on a plane to Wisconsin. Sitting in the stands at American Family Field, he called his son's fifth-inning single on local television.

The Brewers are hoping Tyler's production will help an offence that's been held to three or fewer runs in 10 of the last 14 games.

Defensively, Black had played primarily at third base since Milwaukee selected him out of Wright State in the first round of the 2021 draft.

After acquiring prospect Joey Ortiz from Baltimore in a trade for Corbin Burnes, the Brewers shifted Black to first base during spring training. He's likely to see most of his action there, splitting time with veteran slugger Rhys Hoskins.

"It's just a thing of being where your feet are," said Black, the Brewers' No. 4 overall prospect. "It's the same game. Pitchers still have to throw it over and plate and I've still got to recognize it and put a good swing on it and swing at good pitches.

"I'm just going to try to keep it as simple as possible. It's the same game I've played my whole life, and nothing changes."

Though Black wasn't in the Brewers' starting lineup Tuesday night, he didn't have to wait long to get his first taste of action in Milwaukee's 8-2 win. Murphy sent the youngster in as a pinch-runner when Gary Sanchez suffered a hamstring injury running to first in the opening inning.

Black stepped into the batter's box for the first time in the third and picked up his first big-league hit, a line-drive double to centre then reached again his next time up on a base hit before falling just a few feet short of his first career home run when he flew out to right in the sixth.

"I just kind of strapped it on and said, 'Here we go,"' Black said after the game of his somewhat unconventional first day in the big leagues. "I wouldn't want it any other way, honestly."

A new 17-mile underwater tunnel could link Europe ’s high-speed  rail  network to North Africa by 2030 – if a €6bn proposal goes ahead.

The tunnel would introduce a high-speed train service by connecting Spain ’s existing rail lines to Morocco’ s 200mph Al Boraq route that opened in 2018.

A route departing Madrid , Spain, for Casablanca, Morocco, would travel via Algeciras and Tangier and pass under the Strait of Gibraltar.

While an average flight from Madrid to Casablanca clocks in at one hour and 50 minutes, the full train journey would reportedly take travellers five hours and 30 minutes to switch continents.

Now strategic planning is underway, developers hope the tunnel could open in just six years, in time for the three countries – Spain, Portugal and Morocco – to host the 2030 Fifa World Cup.

It is estimated that the project would cost north of €6 billion (£5.1 billion) to construct, although official costs are unknown.

The Spanish government confirmed €‎2.3 million (£2 million) EU feasibility funding to study the ‘ Europe-Africa Gibraltar strait fixed link ’ just last June.

At the time, Spain’s transport minister, Raquel Sanchez, said: “We are going to give impetus to the studies of a project of maximum geostrategic importance for our countries and for relations between Europe and Africa,

“We are beginning a new stage in the revival of the fixed link project across the Strait of Gibraltar, which we launched in 1981, hand in hand.”

The revived project was first seriously proposed over 40 years ago, in 1979, and could resemble the Channel Tunnel between Dover and Calais.

Surveys of the area by the Moroccan National Company for Strait Studies (SNED) and the Spanish Society for Fixed Communication Studies across the Strait of Gibraltar (SECEGSA) have also revealed several logistical challenges.

At its deepest, the strait dives 2,950ft (900m) down and regular seismic activity on the Azores–Gibraltar geologic fault presents an additional risk.

According to SECEGSA, over 12.8 million passengers per year could benefit from the crossing as well as an increase in trade of 13 million tons of cargo between the two continents if the tunnel is successful.
