Costa Rica in December has great weather. Because it’s the end of the rainy season and the start of the dry season, the entire country is lush and green. But there’s a big difference between traveling to Costa Rica in early December and traveling in late December.

Costa Rica Weather in early December

Visit Costa Rica in early December and the rainy season still lingers in the south Pacific (Osa Peninsula, Corcovado , Drake Bay). By this point, however, the dry season has arrived in the Central Pacific ( Manuel Antonio , Uvita) and North Pacific (Nicoya Peninsula, Tamarindo , Nosara). Early December is also the start of the dry season in San Jose and the Central Valley.

These weather patterns can shift, however, due to El Niño or La Niña . During El Niño years, Costa Rica experiences higher temperatures, shorter rainy seasons and greater drought. In La Niña years, Costa Rica experiences longer rainy seasons and higher than average rainfall.

The best thing about early December: low prices and greater availability at hotels. By late December the situation changes dramatically.

Costa Rica Weather in late December

In all but the wettest years, late December marks the dry season along the entire Pacific coast. This also coincides with Christmas, school vacation, and millions of North Americans daydreaming of tropical vacations.

Not surprisingly, late December is considered one of the best times to visit Costa Rica . It’s peak travel season — both for foreigners and Costa Ricans alike.

In late December Costa Rica hotels are booked months in advance. Even if you can find a room, expect to pay “peak season” prices.

Despite the crowds, there’s nothing like saying Feliz navidad or Feliz año nuevo on a beautiful beach with palm trees swaying in the tropical breeze.

The Papagayo Winds

December marks the start of a weather phenomenon called the Papagayo Winds . These strong winds, which reach speeds of 50 mph with gusts topping 100 mph (a speed normally found only in major hurricanes), blow along Costa Rica’s north Pacific coast for days at a time. Although the Papagayo Winds are dangerous for boaters, they delight surfers with powerful offshore winds.

For travelers who enjoy nature, adventure, gorgeous beaches and rainforests, and wildlife encounters, Costa Rica is a fantastic place to visit. This Central American country is an amazing option for those who are looking to get away from the cold winter that some countries experience during December. The country's dry season, from late November through April, is the most popular (and expensive) time to visit . Visitors will find not only some of the most favorable weather of the year but many fun events ranging from holiday festivals with music and dazzling lights to horse parades with drinking, dancing, and locals dressed as cowboys.

Costa Rica Weather in December

December is the middle of the winter season for most of the northern countries. However, Costa Rica experiences some of its best weather of the year—just in time for the Christmas holidays. In most of the country, the rainy season is officially over by the middle of November, when the climate gets a bit colder, windier, and less muggy, providing gorgeous clear skies and sunny days. This happens in much of Central America during this time of the year.

• San José: 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius) / 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius)
• Puerto Limón: 84 degrees Fahrenheit (29 degrees Celsius) / 69 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius)
• Alajuela: 81 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius) / 63 degrees Fahrenheit (17 degrees Celsius)
• Heredia: 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) / 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius)

Areas around San José are relatively dry during December, receiving around 1.6 inches of rainfall, but other regions like Manuel Antonio on the Pacific side and Limón on the Caribbean side receive much more. The latter can receive upwards of 12 inches throughout December. The country as a whole is quite humid, with humidity occasionally exceeding 88 percent in many areas.

What to Pack

Costa Rica is a small country, but it's also home to 12 different microclimates, which can make packing tricky. As a general rule, casual attire is OK throughout the country. May through November is the rainy season in Costa Rica, but it can still rain any time of year, so bring a raincoat or poncho. Also pack hiking boots or comfortable walking shoes, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a sun hat.

December Events in Costa Rica

Costa Ricans love a good celebration, and there are tons of cool events to take part in during the month of December. On Christmas Day and the week after December 25, most of Costa Rica erupts in celebrations with fireworks, fruits, and festivals. Many Tico (native Costa Rican) children celebrate Santa Claus, and traditional food is everywhere.

• Festival de la Luz : This event full of Christmas spirit has taken place in San José since 1996. The festival includes lighting displays, concerts, parades, floats, and fireworks after dark in the park.
• Fiesta de los Diablitos: Held in Boruca starting in late December, this event features local villagers in colorful devil masks, dressing as the indigenous in mock battles against Spanish conquerors.
• Fiesta de la Yeguita: During this mid-December event, you will see bullfights and a parade in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe, followed by a large Tico style party at the central park of Nicoya with food, concerts, and fireworks.
• Misa de Gallo: Locals dress up for this Christmas Eve midnight mass. Named "mass of the rooster," folklore claims that roosters announced the birth of Jesus at midnight. Afterward, everyone enjoys the main Christmas meal, typically including tamales, drinks like rum punch and egg nog, and desserts.
• El Tope : The country's biggest and most popular horse parade goes through downtown San José on December 26. Visitors and locals drink, dance, dress like cowboys, and celebrate.
• Carnival of Desamparados: Enjoy costumed participants, musical groups, dance ensembles, and floats along San Jose's main streets on December 27. 

December Travel Tips

• While the Christmas season is an extraordinary time to visit Costa Rica, it’s also hectic. Children are on school holidays usually starting the second week in December, so many families are on vacation and the beaches will be a bit more crowded than usual. Many businesses are also closed all week.
• Since December is the peak travel season in Costa Rica, it's a more expensive time, so book your accommodation and other reservations early. Ideally, confirm reservations before the end of October.
• El Niño and La Niña weather systems can occasionally impact Costa Rica. These systems kick the dry season into gear a few weeks earlier than normal. Travelers should also be aware of papagayos , strong winds that are common in the northwest.
• If you're planning to drive, roads can be tricky in early December, especially in more rural areas. Months of rain can cause landslides that lead to road closures and other detours.

Most of the country will be experiencing great weather as the rain season transitions to the dry season at the end of November. By mid-month, tourism cranks up to full speed as travelers from all over the world arrive to spend their holidays in paradise. By the end of December, Costa Rica experiences its busiest tourism season of the year. Sun-worshippers pack the beaches, nature lovers fill the parks, and adventurers are having the time of their lives in the canopy, rivers, and waves! December weather & places to consider visiting.

December truly is a terrific  time to visit Costa Rica ! Insiders will tell you that the beginning of December is one of the best times of the year to visit. It's also of the least visited times as many travelers either choose to come on Thanksgiving or over the Christmas holidays. The period in-between is a fantastic time to travel as the weather is beautiful and many hotels are still offering low season discounts. The landscape is still lush and green, yet the weather is getting drier by the day. While there will be other travelers, beaches will typically be much emptier than they are at the end of the month. As December continues towards the second half of the month, the airports will become packed, and eventually, the beaches are as well! And why wouldn't they? The weather is excellent, and everyone is celebrating the holidays. Well, at least everyone that prepared earlier in the year is celebrating! Most hotels are booked solid by July for Holiday Peak Season dates. Hopefully, you've read this in plenty of time! If not, you may want to consider booking for the following year, unless you are willing to make some concessions.

What to Expect by Region 

December marks the beginning of the dry season for most of Costa Rica. The Pacific side and Central part of the country will see vast improvements in weather, and the Caribbean side will experience a fair amount of rain. The following outlines what you should expect regionally at this time of the year.

The Northwest Pacific and Guanacaste region are in the heart of their dry season by December. The end of the month will pack the beaches and hotels, and the weather is terrific! The streets of towns such as Tamarindo , Samara, Nosara, Coco, and Brasilito are lined with souvenir shops and restaurants to cater to the influx of tourists. December is an excellent time of the year for snorkeling, surfing, catamaran cruises, and scuba diving. It's also a good time for visits to Rincon de la Vieja National Park or even a riverboat trip at Palo Verde. These tours are always better in the sun, and there's no shortage of that in December in Guanacaste! The end of the year is also the best time to see giant leatherback turtles that nest at night at Playa Grande from November through February. Visitors should expect day time temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s. Rains are much less frequent and usually only a passing shower in the late afternoon or early evening, if at all.   

December marks the beginning of the dry season on the  Central Pacific  coast. Manuel Antonio and Jaco will see a stark contrast in weather from just a month earlier. By the beginning of December, rain is infrequent and usually limited to occasional passing showers but expect more sunshine than rain. The jungles are still lush and green from the rain season, so it's an ideal time to visit for the best of both worlds. Hikes in the national parks can be quite enjoyable with beautiful scenery and great weather. At the beginning of the month, you can expect a few people, but by the end of the month, parks will be at full capacity. Manuel Antonio National Park limits the number of visitors, so be sure to book it early or at least plan to arrive 20-30 minutes before it opens to ensure you can get in! Visitors can expect daytime temperatures along the coast to be in the mid-80s to lower 90s, with the warmest weather at the end of the month.

December is one of the best times to visit South Pacific areas such as Costa Ballena and the Osa Peninsula . You practically need scuba gear to go on a hike in these areas in September and October! The rains start to taper off in November, and by December, it's getting pretty dry but still lush and beautiful. The end of the year is a great time to visit Corcovado National Park or to go scuba diving or snorkeling at Cano Island. Visitors can expect hot temperatures, usually reaching the lower to mid-90s during the day. The South Pacific is a rainforest region, so we still recommend bringing an umbrella, but you'll likely use it more for the sun than the rain!

The Caribbean side of Costa Rica will be in the middle of the rain season in December. That doesn't mean that it will rain all day every day, but it will rain for at least a little while on most days with a few all-day events occurring occasionally. December is a great time for surfing on Playa Cocles in Puerto Viejo , but not such a great time for activities like snorkeling or scuba diving. It will still be warm, with daytime temperatures usually reaching the mid-80s. 

Arenal Volcano , while located in the middle of the country, is located on Costa Rica's Caribbean slope. In other words, on the eastern flank of the Talamanca Mountains. This area is more affected by Caribbean weather patterns than Pacific but can be affected by both at times. With that said, Arenal is typically somewhat rainy in December. It is a rainforest area, after all, so this shouldn't come as a surprise! The rains can complement the hot springs, which can be a little too hot in the dry season, especially during the day. Most adventure and nature tours still carry on, whether it is raining or not. Bring an umbrella and a rain jacket and have a blast! It will be a little cooler than average in December, so expect daytime temperatures to reach the low to mid-70s.

While located only 15 km as the crow flies from Arenal Volcano, Monteverde Cloud Forest is more affected by the Pacific weather patterns. In December, visitors should expect a little less rain than usual, but this is a cloud forest region, and it can rain any day of the year. Visitors should prepare with rain gear and warm, quick-dry clothing. December is a transition month, and temperatures can fluctuate fairly significantly, particularly at the beginning of the month. By the end of the month, daytime temperatures will usually reach the low 70s with lower temps in the higher elevations of the cloud forest. 

Prices Can Vary Significantly

Most tour and transportation costs will remain the same throughout December, but the hotel and rental car rates vary significantly. The beginning of December can be one of the more affordable times to visit Costa Rica as many hotels offer low season rates until around December 15 - 20. But at that time an through the end of the month, expect the highest prices of the year. The holiday peak season is by far the costliest and most popular time to visit Costa Rica. When comparing an average hotel's rates from low season to peak season, rate increases can range from 50% - 300% increases! 

When Should I Book for December Travel Dates?

As you can imagine, this varies significantly, but there is a common theme, book early. Costa Rican hotels rely on early reservations and compete for the first 50% of their desired occupancy in the golden 3-8 month in advance range for low and regular reason dates. Once they reach that desired occupancy, they relax and increase prices. It's much different for the holiday peak season. You can't possibly book early enough! Many of the smaller, high-end boutique hotels are simply impossible to book as they are often booked a year and a half to two years in advance by groups of family, friends, or even corporate incentive groups. The top-tier of small luxury hotels that do not permit group bookings sell out as early as April, with the majority of the better midrange hotels fully booked by July. The larger chain resorts, such as the Margaritaville, Westin, Secrets, and Dreams, will have availability through October, but the prices just keep increasing along with their occupancy. The best rates are early in the year and expect them to continue to increase throughout the year.

Update for 2020

Due to the coronavirus situation, as of mid-April, pricing and availability have significantly changed for December 2020. Many of the small boutique hotels that were booked solid for the end of the year by a single group of travelers received cancellations. The cancellations opened them up to free sale, which generally is not possible by this time of the year. The opening of availability has caused an unusual situation. Many travelers previously scheduled to travel in March, April, and May are now rescheduling for the holiday peak season. This change in travel flow created a situation we hadn't seen before as we went from limited availability to abundant availability, and now a mad dash by travelers to book these great hotels and the best rooms all at once. All we can add is our observations and the old saying "book it while the bookin's good"!

I have to admit: I’m partial to Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast , even though it’s rainier and the December weather is better for the beaches on the Pacific Coast!

Costa Rica is a relatively small country, but it’s home to a diverse climate, largely due to its varying elevations and geographical features. 

In December, you can expect pleasant weather throughout most of the country. The dry season begins in December and lasts until April, making it an ideal time for travelers seeking outdoor adventures.

• December Temperatures : December brings comfortable temperatures to Costa Rica, ranging from the mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit (24-29°C) in most regions. This moderate climate is perfect for exploring the country’s natural wonders.
• Low Humidity : One of the advantages of visiting Costa Rica in December is the low humidity. You’ll be able to hike and explore the outdoors, without feeling overly sweaty! 
• Clear Skies : Costa Rica’s dry season means clear skies and plenty of sunshine, so it’s ideal for hitting the beaches on either coast!

Costa Rica December Rainfall

As always, the weather can be unpredictable. While December is considered to be the beginning of the dry season, some regions will still see some rainfall:

• Regional Variations : Rainfall patterns in Costa Rica can vary by region. The Caribbean coast tends to be wetter, while the Pacific coast experiences drier conditions. 
• In Wetter Regions , the rain typically comes in short bursts, leaving plenty of time for outdoor activities.
• Lush Landscapes : The occasional rain in December keeps Costa Rica’s rainforests and other landscapes, lush and green. 

Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast in December 

The Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica, including the province of Limon and town of Puerto Viejo, has a bit of a different climate, compared to other parts of the country.

• Climate : Costa Rica’s Caribbean side experiences a more tropical and humid climate throughout the year, including December. While December marks the beginning of the dry season in most of Costa Rica, this region can still receive substantial rainfall.
• Temperature : December temperatures along the Caribbean Coast typically range from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (24-29°C). It’s warm and comfortable, but the higher humidity can make it feel even warmer.
• Rainfall : December falls within the region’s “green season,” so be prepared for occasional rain showers. These rains are often short and intense, and the skies will clear afterwards.
• Beaches : Despite the rain, December is an excellent time to visit Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast. The beaches are unique: One has black sand, while another is home to a famous shipwreck !
• Wildlife: The Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is home to diverse wildlife and pristine beaches.
• Sanctuary: I’d also definitely recommend a stop at the Jaguar Rescue Center to see the monkeys, sloths, and other animals in rehab.

Arenal Region in December

The Arenal area of Costa Rica, which is known mostly for its iconic volcano, offers a unique climate and a wealth of outdoor activities in December.

• Climate : December in Arenal is relatively dry. You can almost bet on sunny, warm days on your visit.
• Temperature : In Arenal, daytime temperatures hover between the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (24-29°C) in December. Nights can be cooler.
• Rainfall : While Arenal is drier in December compared to other months, you may have a rare light shower move through.
• Activities : People visiting Arenal in December are likely heading to its volcano to hike around.  It’s also a great time to relax in the natural hot springs, take canopy tours, or go horseback riding. With the clear skies in December, stargazing at night is also very popular around Arenal!

Costa Rica’s West Coast in December

The West Coast of Costa Rica, including popular destinations like Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio, offers a different climate compared to the Caribbean Coast.

• Climate : December is the heart of the dry season on Costa Rica’s Western Coast.  The sunny, dry weather attracts crowds to the beaches in December.
• Temperature : Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast is also warmer in December. You can expect daytime temperatures ranging from the mid-80s to low 90s Fahrenheit (29-35°C). Evenings are generally still pretty mild.
• Rainfall : Rainfall is minimal on Costa Rica’s West Coast in December. You’re likely to experience sunshine and clear skies.
• Activities : December attracts beach lovers, surfers, snorklers and divers to Costa Rica’s West Coast.  Beyond the beautiful beaches, the region also boasts diverse wildlife, and you can explore national parks like Manuel Antonio.

• Popular Beach Destinations : Some of the popular beach destinations include Puerto Viejo, Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo, and Santa Teresa. You can relax on the sandy shores, surf, or go snorkeling and scuba diving in crystal-clear waters.
• Turtle Nesting : December is also the season for sea turtles to nest on Costa Rica’s shores. You might witness them laying eggs, or see the hatchlings crawl toward the waves for their first time.  I couldn’t believe our luck when we found conservationists releasing newly-hatched turtles into the Caribbean!

Visiting the Volcanoes

Costa Rica is home to numerous volcanoes, and December is a fantastic time to explore the mountainous landscapes.

• Arenal Volcano : Arenal is one of the most iconic volcanoes in Costa Rica. While it’s not currently erupting, the volcano and its surroundings offer a range of activities. You can hike through Arenal Volcano National Park, soak in natural hot springs, or take canopy tours. The clear December skies provide excellent visibility for enjoying panoramic views.
• Poás Volcano : Poás is known for its active crater with a constantly boiling lake of sulfuric acid. The park around Poás Volcano is easily accessible from San Jose.
• Rincón de la Vieja Volcano : In Rincón de la Vieja National Park, you can hike to the summit and explore the park’s geothermal features, including mud pots and hot springs.
• Irazú Volcano : Irazú is Costa Rica’s highest volcano, known for its striking green crater lake.
• Tenorio Volcano : Located in Tenorio Volcano National Park, this volcano is known for its beautiful Rio Celeste, a river with stunning turquoise waters created by volcanic minerals.

• Harvest Season : December is also coffee beah harvest season in some regions. Technically, workers will be picking the ‘cherries’ off the plants in the fields, which then go into the roasting process!

Costa Rica is full of wildlife encounters year-round. Driving around, you’ll see signs, warning you to watch out for sloths and other wildlife in the road.

• Bird Watching : Migratory birds from North America can be spotted in Costa Rica during December. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the increased avian diversity.
• Whale Watching : The Pacific coast becomes a hotspot for humpback whale sightings in December. You may even witness their spectacular breaching behavior.

As I mentioned earlier, I’d definitely recommend a visit to the Jaguar Rescue Center in Puerto Viejo!  There are no jaguars, but it’s full of injured sloths, monkeys, and other Costa Rican wildlife.  You’ll learn a lot, and love hearing the stories about the animals in rehab.

December in Costa Rica is the beginning of the dry season in most parts of the country. This time of year is often referred to as “verano” or summer. It is also one of the most popular months of the year to visit the country. 

As a couple who lives in Costa Rica, we have become somewhat experts of what to expect in the country by month. We think December is a great time to visit, but there are a few things you should know before packing your suitcase and heading to this tropical paradise. 

From chilling in the cloud forests to catching waves on the beach, we created this post to break down the best spots and tips for your December adventure in Costa Rica. So, let’s get to it!

Should You Visit Costa Rica in December?

I think there is never a “best time” or “worst time” to visit Costa Rica. But, different months definitely bring different pros and cons. Here is what you can expect for pros and cons in December in Costa Rica. 

Pros of Visiting in December

• It is the start of the dry season . So, the weather starts to completely clear up. You probably won’t experience too much (or any) rain, especially at the end of the month.
• Everything still looks lush and green from the heavy rainy season.
• In the first half of the month, the madness of dry season hasn’t fully begun yet. 
• There are a lot of fun cultural opportunities, especially around Christmas time.

Cons of Visiting in December

• Things start to get more expensive as the high season begins. It is hard to find lower prices for hotels, rental cars, and activities.
• There is more demand for hotels, rental cars, activities etc.
• The Costa Rican school year ends, so a lot of locals will be traveling as well (roads are busier, more things are booked out etc.).
• The weather can be really windy, especially in the central part of the country.

Our Opinion

In our opinion, December is a really great time to visit. However, you definitely should book things as early as possible. 

If you wait too long, all the affordable and nice hotels will be taken. This goes for transportation and activities as well.

We also find that a lot of the main tourist attractions become a bit overwhelming. So, if you plan on visiting places such as Manuel Antonio National Park, it is best to start your day early and enjoy this before everyone else wakes up. 

Costa Rica Weather in December

Although Costa Rica is a small country, it is home to several different microclimates. That means that Costa Rica’s weather can vary greatly depending on what part of the country you are visiting 

Here is what you can expect from the weather in Costa Rica in December by region. 

Caribbean Coast

The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica , which includes areas like Puerto Viejo, Cahuita , and Tortuguero , has a distinct weather pattern compared to the Pacific coast. Here’s what you can typically expect in December:

• Rain: December is part of the rainy season for the Caribbean coast, which means you can expect more frequent rainfall compared to the Pacific side. The rain usually comes in short, intense showers, often in the late afternoon or evening. But, it can sometimes last longer.
• Temperature : Daytime temperatures usually hover around 81°F to 86°F (27°C to 30°C)
• Humidity : High humidity is standard, given the tropical rainforest environment. It can often feel quite muggy, especially after a rain shower.
• Sunshine : Despite being the rainy season, you can still expect periods of sunshine. Mornings are often clear and sunny, with clouds and potential rain building up as the day progresses.
• Sea Conditions: The Caribbean Sea is warm, with average temperatures usually around 81°F (27°C)

A few tips if you’re visiting the Caribbean coast in December:

• Be Prepared for Rain : Bring lightweight rain gear, including a waterproof jacket or poncho and quick-drying clothing.
• Accommodations: Some places might have reduced prices due to it being the off-peak season for this region. However, because it’s a popular time for travel overall in Costa Rica, it’s still a good idea to book accommodations in advance.
• Flexibility : With the unpredictable weather, it’s useful to be flexible with your plans. For instance, if the morning is sunny, take advantage of outdoor activities early on.

While the Caribbean coast in December can be wetter than other parts of Costa Rica, it also has its unique charm. We like to visit here because it is less crowded.

We suggest visiting Tortuguero for a really unique experience or Cahuita for a chance to explore the Cahuita National Park and go snorkeling along coral reefs. 

The Guanacaste region , located in the northwest part of Costa Rica on the Pacific coast, has a different climate from the Caribbean side. It is often referred to as the “Gold Coast” due to its sunny weather

Here’s what you can typically expect in December for Guanacaste:

• Rain : December marks the beginning of the dry season for Guanacaste. During the early part of the month, you might still experience some residual rains from the rainy season, but it becomes drier as the month progresses.
• Temperature : Daytime temperatures in Guanacaste typically range from 82°F to 91°F (28°C to 33°C)
• Sunshine : Expect plenty of sunshine in December. This makes it an ideal time for beach activities and outdoor exploration.
• Sea Conditions : The Pacific waters are usually around 81°F to 84°F (27°C to 29°C)
• The gorgeous beaches in Guanacaste, like Tamarindo , Playa Flamingo , and Playa Hermosa , offer good conditions for swimming, surfing, and other water activities.

A few tips if you’re visiting the Guanacaste region in December:

• Sun Protection : With the strong tropical sun, ensure you have sun protection such as high SPF sunscreen , a wide-brimmed hat , and sunglasses.
• Accommodations : December is a peak travel time due to the holidays and the beginning of the dry season. It’s recommended to book accommodations, tours, and transportation in advance.
• Water Intake : The warmer temperatures and sun can be dehydrating, so always carry a full water bottle with you and stay hydrated, especially if you’re participating in outdoor activities. It always shocks us how fast we get dehydrated when we come back after being away from Costa Rica for a few months.

Nicoya Peninsula

December on the Nicoya Peninsula is a gateway month. The end of the rainy season gives way to the approaching sun-drenched days of great weather.

• Rain:  The Nicoya Peninsula is transitioning from the rainy season to the dry season in December. This means you can expect drier conditions, especially in the latter half of the month. However, the occasional rain shower or afternoon downpour can still occur early in the month.
• Temperature:  Being a coastal region, it’s warm and tropical. Daytime temperatures can range from 82°F to 91°F (28°C to 33°C). Evenings are slightly cooler, but still comfortably warm.
• Humidity:  While the humidity starts to decrease as the dry season approaches, it’s still present, especially after the occasional rain shower. The beach areas can feel muggy at times.
• Sunshine:  December sees a significant increase in sunny days, particularly as the month progresses. The sun can be quite strong, so precautions are needed if you’re out on the beaches or exploring the coastal towns.
• Sea Conditions:  The Pacific waters are warm and inviting. The Nicoya Peninsula has some fantastic surfing spots, and December can offer good conditions for both beginners and experienced surfers.

Tips for visiting the Nicoya Peninsula in December:

• Accommodations:  December, being a popular travel month, means accommodations can fill up quickly, especially in popular spots like Santa Teresa. Consider booking in advance.
• Road Conditions:  Some roads in the Nicoya Peninsula can be challenging, especially after rains. If you’re renting a car, a 4×4 might be a good choice.

Central Valley

The Central Valley of Costa Rica , which encompasses cities like San José (the capital), Alajuela , Heredia, and Cartago , offers a unique set of weather conditions compared to the coastal regions.

Here’s what you can generally expect in December:

• Rain : December in the Central Valley is transitioning from the rainy season to the dry season. So, while you can still expect occasional rain showers, especially in the earlier part of the month, they tend to decrease in frequency and intensity as the month progresses.
• Temperature: The Central Valley’s elevation provides milder temperatures than the coasts. The daytime average temperature typically ranges between 68°F to 81°F (20°C to 27°C). Nights are cooler, often dropping to around 59°F to 64°F (15°C to 18°C).
• Wind : The Central Valley tends to get really windy in December. As someone who lives here, it’s actually one of my least favorite times of year. The wind makes it kind of cold (OK…cold is a relative term, but still). Also, note that if you are landing at the San Jose Airport the landing at this time of year can sometimes be a bit bumpy because of the strong winds.
• Sunshine : As December progresses and the region moves into the dry season, you can expect more clear, sunny days, especially in the latter half of the month.

A few tips if you’re visiting the Central Valley in December:

• Layer Up : Given the cooler evenings and mornings, it’s a good idea to have a light sweater or jacket handy, especially if you’re out and about during those times.
• School Vacation : During the end of December, the city clears out as a lot of families head to the beaches. 
• Markets : Local markets, like the Central Market in San José, are great places to taste local foods, buy souvenirs, and engage with local vendors. This is especially fun in December because you can get the chance to try traditional holiday food items. 

Central Pacific

The Central Pacific region of Costa Rica, which includes popular destinations such as Jacó , Manuel Antonio , and Quepos , has its own climatic nuances.

• Rain: The Central Pacific begins to transition from the rainy season to the dry season in December. The early part of the month may still witness occasional rain showers, especially in the afternoons or evenings, but these decrease as the month progresses.
• Temperature : You can expect warm temperatures in this part of the country. Daytime highs generally range between 82°F to 91°F (28°C to 33°C). Nights are slightly cooler but still comfortably warm.
• Humidity : The humidity is noticeable but starts to decrease throughout December as the area enters the dry season. Still, the lush environment can bring bouts of mugginess, especially after rain showers.
• Sunshine : December sees increasing amounts of sunshine, especially in the latter half of the month. It’s a great time for beach activities and exploring national parks.

A few tips for visiting the Central Pacific region in December:

• Accommodations : December can be busy due to the holiday season and improving weather. It’s recommended to book accommodations and tours in advance. Plus, this is the closest coast to San Jose. This means that towards the end of December, a lot of locals living in San Jose head here and are booking hotels as well.
• Wildlife Viewing : Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the most biodiverse areas in the country. If visiting, go early to avoid crowds and increase the chances of wildlife sightings.

South Pacific

The South Pacific region of Costa Rica (also known as the Osa Peninsula), encompasses areas like Puerto Jimenez , Drake Bay , Uvita , and Pavones. It is known for its rich biodiversity and pristine landscapes. 

Here’s what you can expect in December:

• Rain: The South Pacific tends to have a more extended green season than the Central Pacific. December is a transitional month. There is a reduction in rainfall compared to the previous months. However, occasional showers, especially in the afternoons or evenings, are still possible.
• Temperature: The South Pacific is warm, with daytime temperatures generally ranging between  82°F to 90°F (28°C to 32°C). Nights are a bit cooler but remain comfortably warm.
• Humidity: High humidity is typical due to the lush rainforests in the region. The environment can feel quite muggy, especially after rain showers.
• Sunshine: As the region transitions into the dry season, there’s an increase in sunny days, particularly towards the latter half of December.

A few tips for visiting the South Pacific region at the start of the dry season:

• Prepare for Rain: Even though the dry season is approaching, having waterproof gear, like a rain jacket or poncho, is essential. Quick-drying clothing and waterproof bags can also be handy.
• Insect Repellent: Given the dense rainforests and high humidity, mosquitoes and other insects can be prevalent. Definitely bring a good insect repellent .
• Road Conditions: If you’re driving, be cautious. Some roads, especially those leading to more remote areas, can be challenging, especially after rains.

The Northern Mountains

The Northern Mountains of Costa Rica include prominent destinations like Monteverde and La Fortuna (near Arenal Volcano). This area offers a unique blend of cloud forests, volcanic landscapes, and cooler temperatures. 

• Rain: December is the transition from the rainy season to the dry season in the Northern Mountains. While the frequency of rain decreases, especially as the month progresses, Monteverde (being a cloud forest) can still have misty and drizzly conditions.
• Temperature: Due to its elevation, the region experiences cooler temperatures. In Monteverde, daytime temperatures might range from 64°F to 75° (18°C to 24°C). La Fortuna, is at a lower elevation so it can be a bit warmer. Typically temperatures range from 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C). Nights in both areas are cooler.
• Humidity: Humidity can be high, especially in Monteverde, where the cloud forest environment creates moist and misty conditions.
• Sunshine: December sees an increase in sunny days, especially in La Fortuna. However, Monteverde, due to its unique cloud forest ecosystem, can remain overcast even on drier days.
• Visibility: On clear days, especially after rain, views of the Arenal Volcano from La Fortuna can be spectacular.

A few tips for visiting the Northern Mountains in December:

• Layered Clothing: Due to the cooler temperatures, especially in Monteverde, it’s recommended to wear layered clothing. A light jacket or sweater can be useful in the evenings and early mornings.
• Rain Gear: Even though December is dryer, having a rain jacket or poncho is a good idea, especially for Monteverde. Waterproof shoes or boots can also be handy for muddy trails.
• Advance Bookings: December is a popular travel month, so booking accommodations, especially in places like La Fortuna with views of Arenal Volcano, is recommended.
• Footwear: If you’re exploring cloud forests or hiking near the volcano, wear sturdy shoes with good grip. Trails can be slippery, especially if it has rained.

December 8th- Immaculate Conception (La Inmaculada Concepción de María) : This is a national holiday, and it’s an important religious celebration for Costa Ricans. Many people attend church services. As it’s a public holiday, banks, government offices, and some businesses are closed.

Mid-December – Festival de la Luz (Festival of Light) : Held in San José, this festival marks the beginning of the Christmas season. It includes a nighttime parade with illuminated floats, marching bands, dancers, and fireworks. Thousands of people line up along the streets of San José to witness this event.

December 24th – Christmas Eve : A lot of people attend evening church services and celebrate with their families.

December 25 – Christmas Day (Navidad) : Just like many countries around the world, Christmas is a significant holiday in Costa Rica. Families gather to celebrate with feasts, music, and church services. Keep in mind that Costa Rica is a primarily Catholic holiday, so this day is very significant.

On Christmas, the traditional meal is tamales. Tamales are made by families as a fun activity on the days leading up to Christmas. Every family makes them a little different. If you get the chance to try traditional tamales, you do not eat the banana leaf. Undo the twine, peel back the banana leaf, and eat the delicious filling.

December 26 – El Tope Nacional : This is one of the country’s most significant horse parades. It is held in San José. Thousands of riders from all over the country come to participate, showing off their high-stepping horses. It’s pretty cool to see. I had never seen horses walk like that before coming to Costa Rica.

Late December to Early January – Zapote Festival : This festivity is held in the Zapote district of San José on the fair grounds. This festival is known for its traditional bullfights (where the bull is not harmed), carnival rides, games, food stalls, and live music.

December 31 – New Year’s Eve (Nochevieja): While not an official public holiday, Costa Ricans celebrate New Year’s Eve with parties, family gatherings, music, dancing, and fireworks. Many beaches along the Pacific coast, like Tamarindo and Jacó, host parties and events. 

January 1st- New Years Day : New Years Day is a national holiday and people will have this day off of work. 

Just Note: This is not a festival or holiday, but the school year ends for Costa Rican students usually the week before Christmas. They will then have their “summer break” and start school again in the middle to end of January.

I tell you this because a lot of Costa Rican families will be traveling around the country as well at this time. 

Booking Transportation in December

We suggest booking your transportation for Costa Rica in December as early as possible. 

With transportation it is not so much about getting the best deals, but more so about getting any transportation at all. 

See, the prices of rental cars and shuttles are usually set ahead of time, so the price won’t necessarily be lower if you reserve far in advance. However, things book out fast.

In our opinion, having a rental car is always the best way to get around the country. It will give you the most flexibility and will allow you to enjoy fun day trips without depending on tours with transportation.

For December, you don’t usually need a 4×4 vehicle, but we suggest booking an SUV for decent clearance for hilly roads.

To find a great place without the higher prices it is somewhat essential you book early. This is especially important in coastal areas and popular tourist towns. 

I suggest  Booking.com  for hotels and VRBO for vacation rentals. Search by places with free cancellation if you are concerned about your plans potentially changing.

Usually in Costa Rica, it is not really necessary to book a lot of day excursions ahead of time. However, for December, I would suggest booking your activities as early as possible.

Our go-to website for booking things to do is Viator . Here you can find adventurous activities, wildlife guides, catamaran tours etc. from reputable Costa Rican travel companies.

We like Viator because it takes out the work of searching for tours yourself and you have the backing of a big company for things like online payments.

• Book in Advance: December is a peak tourist month due to holidays and the warm weather. Ensure that you book accommodations, transportation, and tours well in advance.
• Prepare for Crowds: Popular destinations like Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo, and La Fortuna can get crowded, especially around Christmas and New Year’s.

Costa Rica in December

Early December weather in the Costa Rica Mountains is a bit of gamble. The rainy season is typically gone and it’s common to have beach weather during the entire month. However, occasionally the rainy season ends only a week before Christmas , but overall it’s sunny in the morning and it showers in the afternoon or evening.

On the Caribbean side of the mountains, it’s wet at the start of December and gets even wetter by the end of the month.

Beaches and lowlands experience perfect weather for sunbathing (mid-80s during the day and mid-60s at night). Around San Jose , the temperatures are usually 5-10 degrees cooler.

Alajuela avg 69F/21C Puntarenas avg high 87F/30C; avg low 76F/24C San Jose avg high 75F/23C ; avg low 58F/15C

Hotels https://www.costaricatravelscout.com/hotels have higher peak season (up to 50% higher than during the high season) around Christmas and New Year’s Eve. At most resorts the festive dinners are mandatory (and add additional costs to the vacation). Minimum stays range from 3 to 7 nights during this time of the year.

Should you plan to visit Costa Rica in the second half of December, book the hotel and airfare at least six to three months in advance. A good alternative for saving money is to book a hostel bed , but also remember to start your search way in advance.

Things to Do

Your first encounter with Costa Rica will most likely be San Jose, its cosmopolitan capital. Before heading to another place, take some time to enjoy the city’s most important sights. Visit the Jade Museum and the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum. You can also take a day trip to the Arenal Volcano.

If you don’t manage to visit Arenal Volcano, then just at an hour drive from San Jose you can visit Paos Volcano and you can walk up the crater for some lovely views of the area.

Should you decide to spend some time in the Manuel Antonio National Park, don’t forget your swimsuit and sunscreen because you’ll want to spend some time at the beach. Learn to swim, watch the wildlife or try zip lining in the forest.

If you didn’t have a chance to visit the beaches at Manuel Antonio, head to the Gold Coast beaches in the Guanacaste area. Tamarindo, Playa Grande, Flamingo, Conchal and Ocatol are some of the best choices.

While in Costa Rica, don’t miss taking a coffee tour – you can visit a coffee farm and a processing facility – and enjoying the hot springs. Nature walks are an excellent way to enjoy the natural beauty and don’t worry if you are not a fitness enthusiast. There are 1-3 hours tracks suitable for anyone.

December is a very exciting time in Costa Rica. Holiday decorations and parties are planned. Schools let out in the first part of the month and families head straight to the beach or the rivers . And everyone is looking forward to the excitement, fireworks, and celebrations around New Years’ Eve.

Unfortunately, it is also a very very busy time in Costa Rica with lots of national and international tourism. The last two weeks of the month move from high season to peak season pricing and most choice accommodations are booked up months and months in advance. While it can still be a great time to visit Costa Rica, it is very important for tourists planning a vacation in December to plan ahead with considerable anticipation. Many hotels require minimum stays of 3-7 nights over the holidays.

What the Weather is Like in Costa Rica in December

December weather in Costa Rica is still transitioning to dry season. More and more sun and less and less precipitation is the norm for the month, but it is still possible that it rains much of the time, particularly on the Caribbean side of the country. The winds increase considerably in December which locals call Los Vientos de Navidad (Christmas winds). Also, temperatures are at their lowest during the whole year.

To get into the holiday spirit, the municipality of San Jose hosts a celebration with lights and evening parades during the first week of December. Families snuggle up under blankets in the bleachers (or in their homes) and watch as the lighting displays march down the main thoroughfare in San Jose. Fireworks top off the experience.

Immaculate Conception Day / Dia de la Negrita (December 8)

Catholic churches hold processionals and special masses to honor the Virgin Mary on this day.

Christmas / La navidad (December 24 and 25)

In Costa Rica, December 24th is the day when most people gather together to celebrate Christmas. Typically families meet up in the evening to eat tamales and Arroz con Leche (rice pudding). Then everyone stays up until after midnight to “receive” el niño Jesus and to exchange gifts. You will probably see lots of Christmas lights up and may even be able to witness a local celebration. Most restaurants will probably stay open, but supermarkets and pharmacies may close early or even all day long on the 24th and 25th.

New Years Eve / El Año Nuevo (December 31-January 1)

December 31st is arguably the most important date around the holiday season and one of the most important dates of the whole year. Families gather together in the evening to eat a huge dinner that includes tamales, all kinds of pork products, and pastries. Everyone stays up until after midnight and the night sky explodes with fireworks and ranchera music. Young people often then head out to the discotecas for dancing. Most restaurants will probably stay open, but supermarkets and pharmacies may close early or even all day long on the 1st.

Lots of cool breezes keep temperatures low in December, so it is a good idea to pack a few long-sleeve quick-dry shirts and a light jacket. Don’t forget a compact, travel-friendly umbrella for the surprise rainstorm after a long morning of the sun! This a tough topic. The question should really be: When is the best time for ME to visit Costa Rica? Yes, the answer depends on the individual. So while we can’t answer this question for you, we can give you some information to help you make your decision.

Dry Season vs Green Season

First things first, there are two tropical seasons in Costa Rica: dry season and green season. December through April is the dry season. May through November is the green season. The dry season is also the high season as many snow birds make their escape to the tropics, and there is less rainfall. While the high season is the most popular travel time, the green season is often a favorite among Costa Rica Experts. The green season typically experiences sunny mornings (great for morning excursions) and afternoon rain showers (perfect for a rejuvenating afternoon repose). There are many perks of traveling in rainy season like discounted hotel rates, less crowds, and more active wildlife.

Varying Climates

Keep in mind that the landscapes and climates of Costa Rica vary greatly by region. The coasts are generally warmer, and the highlands are generally cooler. The beginning of January is a peak travel season in Costa Rica, as crowds from the Christmas and New Year holidays linger. It is also dry season in Costa Rica, when clear skies accommodate travelers. The beginning months of dry season are particularly appealing as the landscape is still verdant from the recent green season, despite reduced rainfall.

We’re still in dry season, and the weather remains fantastic. There is generally a spike in tourist traffic over Easter and the week leading up to it. Plan ahead for travel over Presidents’ Day weekend, Spring Break, and Easter. Hotel availability is limited over these popular travel dates, and some hotels increase rates over peak travel dates. Book early.

April marks the last month of the dry season, although it can last a couple weeks longer in the arid northwest region of Guanacaste. Travelers can still enjoy clear skies, although the vegetation, particularly on the North Pacific Coast, has lost some of its vibrant green sparkle after months of little rain. April is also historically one of the hottest months of the year. If Easter falls in April, you can expect a spike in tourist traffic over the holiday. Plus, there may still be spring break travelers, so you’ll want to book your vacation well in advance.

Green Season

The start of green season in May is a much needed cool off from the intense heat of the dry season. Temperatures begin to drop as the hotel prices and number of tourists do. May is a bit of a transition month, in which the rain picks up, but not quite at the rate of later green season months.

The rain brings out the best in Costa Rica’s flora.

In June, you’ll see a small surge in tourists as the kids get let out of school and family vacations start. Everything begins to look much more green as the rain brings the rainforest to life.

It’s green season in Costa Rica, but a brief pocket of sunshine breaks up the rain in July in what locals call veranillo , or little summer. Exact veranillo days and duration vary from year to year, and may even continue into the start of August. Afternoons are rainy with typically clear mornings (perfect for morning tours). The weather is generally good, and hotel prices low. July and August are popular travel times due to less rain, family summer vacations, and active green season wildlife. Some hotels increase their prices in these months.

This is the peak of green season on the Pacific Coast, but don’t let the rain keep you away. Your opportunities for spotting wildlife are best in green season. Surfing and rafting are fantastic. Hotel availability, prices, and service are at their best. Plus, there are no crowds. You may even find you have the beach all to yourself.

Rain typically clears up on the Caribbean Coast in September & October.

The end of November marks the start of Costa Rica’s busy season, as holidays and cold weather are a great excuse to escape. November is a bit of a bridge month, when the rain has slowed down, and the crowds begin to trickle in.

The beginning of December is less-crowded, with difficult to predict weather. Typically, the sky clears up as the rains begin to taper off for dry season, and you can experience beautiful beach days on the Pacific Coast. In Guanacaste, the most arid region of the country, the foliage begins to turn golden. We enter peak season for travel at the end of December around the holidays. With less rain, there is more uninterrupted pool time. With that, hotel prices rise. Our advice is to book your holiday vacations well in advance to reserve the best hotel rooms and take advantage of any early bird specials.

Best things to do in Costa Rica in December

Costa Rica is known for having some of the absolute best beaches in Central America, especially on its Pacific Coast. Manuel Antonio Beach is the most famous and is located inside a spectacular national park (more on the park below). However, it's hard to go wrong visiting any beach on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast. Some of my other favorites include Playa Herradura, Tamarindo and Papagayo. Just watch out for saltwater crocodiles! (I wish I was kidding). Visiting Costa Rica in December is sure to give you some great beach and sun-tanning weather.

Manuel Antonio National Park

It’s hard to find the words to describe how gorgeous Manuel Antonio National Park is. It is an absolute must-visit while you’re in Costa Rica! With lush rainforests, the most stunning white sand beaches and incredible biodiversity, this national park has it all. It is great for hiking, bird watching (if you’re lucky, you’ll see a toucan), relaxing on the beach and seeing monkeys, frogs, sloths and more.

Ziplining through the canopies of a rainforest? Yes, please! Ziplining is the perfect activity to combine adrenaline and nature, soaring through the treetops and looking down into the vast and beautiful jungle below. There’s no shortage of zipline tours in Costa Rica, so wherever you’re staying on the Pacific Coast, a zipline excursion won’t be far.

Coffee Farm

Costa Rica is famous for its gourmet coffee! If you’re a coffee lover (and even if you’re not, like me), touring a coffee farm in Costa Rica is such a unique experience. I specifically recommend visiting Doka Estate Plantation, where you will get an in-depth tour of how coffee is grown, harvested, fermented, roasted and made into the beverage we all know (spoiler alert: coffee beans actually come from berries). The best part is of course the taste test at the end! It’s also great to visit the coffee farms in Costa Rica in December, because December is right in the middle of peak harvesting season, so you’ll actually get to pick your own coffee berries, too.

Along with spectacular rainforests and beaches on the Pacific Coast, Costa Rica is also known for its many volcanoes, both active and dormant. While there are many choices of volcanoes to visit, Arenal is the most famous and recognizable. Depending on where you stay on the coast, it might be a 4 or 5-hour drive up to Arenal, but if you have the time, it is definitely worth the trek! Another amazing and unique volcano much closer to San Jose, and my personal favorite, is Poás, which most recently erupted in April 2017.

There is something so special and freeing about taking a jet ski out on the open ocean, especially when you are in a tropical paradise. There are lots of islands on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, and you can go island hopping via jet ski! It’s so beautiful to ride along the coast, next to the gorgeous white sand beaches and jungle-covered mountains towering above. Many jet ski tours also come with snorkeling gear, so you can take a swim in the warm waters and see lots of beautiful tropical fish!

Chocolate Farm

Along with coffee, Costa Rica is also known for its amazing chocolate! Similar to the coffee farm tour, you can also take a chocolate farm tour and try the cacao fruit straight from the tree. It is fascinating to learn the history of how chocolate, as we know it today, was invented and created from a tropical fruit. We got to try the cacao fruit, straight chocolate (pre-sugar and milk), fresh dark and milk chocolates, Costa Rican hot chocolate and bananas dipped in chocolate. Chocolate heaven! Similar to coffee, December in Costa Rica is the peak harvest season for cacao, making it the perfect time to visit.

Another activity for you adventure lovers, make sure to take an ATV ride through the rainforest. This was one of my favorite activities we did! We rode through the lush green jungle, splashing through mud puddles, and followed a river upstream to a gorgeous waterfall! Not every ATV ride will have a waterfall, but it will still be an exhilarating and gorgeous ride nonetheless. We did our ATV ride at Vista Los Suenos Adventure Park near Jacó.

Butterfly Sanctuary

Costa Rica also has tons of butterfly sanctuaries and conservatories, typically full of stunning bright blue butterflies. You can learn about the lifecycle of a butterfly from caterpillar to cocoon to butterfly, and see them majestically flying around. Butterflies typically thrive in the wet season, so while December is not peak butterfly season in Costa Rica, it is right at the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the dry season, so there are still many opportunities to see the butterflies.

San Jose, Grecia and Sarchí make great day trips in Costa Rica. Outside of some day trips to visit volcanoes or a national park, I do recommend including at least one city sightseeing day amid your adventure-packed nature vacation. San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica (and is likely where you will fly into). It is a wonderful city, filled with some of the best restaurants in the whole country, parks, and museums and is a great place to learn more about Costa Rican history and culture. Grecia and Sarchí are not too far outside of San Jose, and are pretty close to Poás Volcano as well, in the Alajuela Province of Costa Rica. Grecia is famous for being the “cleanest town” in all of Latin America, and I will say, it is immaculate! One of the coolest and most notable sites there is their church: Iglesia de la Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes. What makes it unique is that it is made entirely from sheet metal.

A fun fact about Costa Rica: one of their national symbols is the ox cart, representing hard work, the spirit and vitality of the Costa Rican people. But, these are no ordinary ox carts. Costa Rican ox carts are all handmade and hand painted with beautiful bright colored designs. The best place to see them? Sarchí, which is the arts and crafts capital of Costa Rica. You can tour an ox cart factory and see how they are painstakingly crafted and painted. This was one of the most unique and memorable experiences of my trip to Costa Rica, and I highly recommend taking the time to visit.

A note from Bria

Costa Rica has two main international airports - San Jose (SJO) in its capital in central Costa Rica and Liberia (LIR) in the north. If you’re going to the northwest coast, and if you want to be closer to Arenal, I’d recommend flying into Liberia. LIR is ideal for beach towns like Papagayo and Tamarindo. However, SJO is much more accessible to the majority of Costa Rica, including most of the Pacific Coast, and destinations like Playa Herradura and Manuel Antonio.

Places to eat & drink in Costa Rica

Before suggesting some restaurants, I do want to point out some must-try foods while in Costa Rica.

Casado - A very traditional and delicious Costa Rican meal. This is a plate served with a little bit of everything: rice, beans, plantains, salad, tortillas and some sort of protein. It is typical to eat casado for lunch, as lunch is typically the largest portioned meal of the day in Costa Rica.

Gallo Pinto - Traditional Central American rice and beans dish. While simple, it is absolutely delicious and has a lot of cultural significance to the Costa Rican people.

Fresh Seafood - Having so much coast on both sides of the country, Costa Rica is definitely known for having fresh seafood. There are tons of seafood dishes to try, but my favorite is Costa Rican ceviche.

Coffee and Chocolate - As mentioned above, Costa Rica is famous for its luxurious coffee and chocolate. If you can’t tour the farms and taste it fresh from the source, there are still tons of places to try Costa Rican chocolate and coffee around the country!

Restaurants Near Manuel Antonio National Park

After a day of adventuring through Manuel Antonio, you’re sure to work up an appetite. Here are two wonderful restaurants not too far from the national park: Agua Azul Café is very close to the national park, and you can sit outside on their patio overlooking the Pacific Ocean! Great for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, with a variety of Latin American dishes. Pro tip: Ask to try all of their salsas. Restaurante La Costa is a little bit farther from the park, but not unreasonable to get to. It’s one of the highest-rated restaurants in the area. It is also right on the water, and is the perfect spot to try traditional Costa Rican foods including ceviche and gallo pinto, two of my favorites!

Restaurants Near Jacó and Playa Herradura

This is where we stayed when I visited, so we spent the most time eating at restaurants in this area, and they did not disappoint! My personal favorite was Hacienda Kitchen, another great restaurant for traditional Costa Rican food. They’re open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and this was my favorite spot for a Costa Rican breakfast. Along with rice and beans, we were served some gorgeous and delectable tropical fruits, a great way to start the day and fuel up before an adventure! Los Sueños Marina Village also has tons of great restaurants if you are staying in that area. I really liked Bambú Sushi and Asian Cuisine, an Asian fusion restaurant. Costa Rica is known for having delicious and fresh seafood, so the sushi was pretty high quality and a lot of the rolls had a Costa Rican flare.

Restaurants Near Tamarindo

If you’re staying in Tamarindo, start your day off at NOI Bistro. They have Costa Rican breakfast plates, American breakfasts, fresh smoothies and acai bowls. They also serve lunch and dinner, with a variety of foreign and local cuisines, including casado! Another great beach-front restaurant is Nogui’s. They have lots of great seafood, and are famous for their sunset cocktails! It’s a spot frequented by locals and a great place to experience local culture while soaking in the beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean.

Restaurants Near Papagayo

Poro Poro Restaurant is a favorite on the Papagayo Peninsula, and definitely a great destination for foodies! Their menu is constantly changing, as the head chef loves to innovate and personalize his customer’s culinary experience. If you’re looking for a high-end steakhouse, Nemare is the place to go. You can try their 6-course tasting menu, or order a la carte, all paired with creative craft cocktails.

Need to Know

While Costa Rica is certainly known for its nature, I do recommend taking some time to visit the cities as well and learn more about the history and culture. Speaking with local guides is a great way to immerse yourself. Costa Ricans are all about pura vida, and you’ll definitely feel it wherever you go in the country.

Best Times To Visit Costa Rica

The best time to visit Costa Rica is from mid-December to April (the dry season). This peak tourist season boasts plenty of sunshine making it an ideal time for exploring rainforests and lounging on beaches. That said, the dry season is the most popular (and expensive) time to visit. Luckily the U.S. dollar goes a long way in Costa Rica no matter the season. You'll have to book your room and tour reservations three months in advance to secure a spot. If you don't mind getting a little wet, visit between May and November when prices are at their lowest. During June and July, rain showers pause briefly, and Costa Rica's forests burst with green foliage.

While planning your trip, keep in mind that the weather varies by region. In the thick forests of the Caribbean Sea coast and Northern Plains, expect high humidity and temperatures ranging between the 70s and high 80s year-round. Conversely, in the North Pacific, prepare for lower humidity levels, but temperatures that often soar into the 90s during Costa Rica's dry months.

The pura vida (pure life) spirit that characterizes Costa Rica is wonderfully contagious. It's one of the many reasons this Central American country is so popular. Travelers who yearn to slow down and be one with nature will find themselves at home among its cloud rainforests, scenic mountains and beautiful beaches .

With an average temperature of around 80℉ (26℃), it’s possible to enjoy Costa Rica all year round, but to get the most out of your trip it’s essential to know which season is best for the activities you want to do. Here are a few things to know about choosing the best time to travel to Costa Rica.

December to April: Best time for beach vacations

If your main goal is to spend time in the sun, plan your trip around the country’s dry season which runs from December to about mid-April.

Every day will bring clear skies and enough sun to enjoy the beach along the Caribbean coastline. Lower rainfall means it’s arguably the best time to visit in general, and also more attractive for travelers hoping to see wildlife.

However, this is the high season, the most expensive time to visit, so expect higher prices for accommodation and airfare. It will also be more crowded, particularly around the major holidays of Christmas, New Year and Easter. March is also very popular for travelers on spring break.

May and June: Best time for fewer crowds

May is the beginning of the ‘green’ season — meaning you can expect mornings full of sunshine, but rain later in the day. It’s the time when much of Costa Rica’s plant life comes into bloom.

This time can be slightly unpredictable when it comes to rainfall because it’s between the dry and rainy seasons. However, if you want to experience most of the more popular sites without large crowds, this is the best time to visit.

It’s also a great time to get a clear view of the Arenal volcano. Keep in mind the end of June will begin to see more crowds as the summer travel season starts for many Americans.

July and August: Best time for spotting wildlife

July and August are still within the country’s green season, so you can expect the same weather as in May and June. It’s also the perfect time for whale watching in Dominical or spotting sea turtles in Tortuguero National Park .

Trails, roads and paths may be muddy and slippery at this time of year, so bear that in mind if you’re interested in exploring off the beaten track. Prices for certain attractions and activities may be higher due to the influx of travelers coming for summer break.

September and October: Best time for budget travelers

September and October see the departure of summer travelers and the arrival of holiday travelers. You’ll find fewer crowds and more deals on accommodation and travel to Costa Rica.

This makes it the best time for those wanting to explore the country without big crowds and higher prices, however it’s also the height of the rainy season, so weather-wise it’s the least desirable time to visit. This time is not ideal for those looking to see more remote places due to the possibility of flooding.

August to November: Best time for surfers

Great surf is one of the main draws of Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, and August through November is when you will see many of the biggest waves thanks to storm surges brought on by the rainy season.

While conditions may be ideal for experienced surfers, you can also expect moderate rainfall. November’s weather tends to be unpredictable too, so bear that in mind if you are planning outdoor activities as part of your trip.

The most popular time for Costa Rica vacations is the holiday peak season around Christmas and New Years but the best time to visit may be a couple of weeks later after the crowds thin.

The rains end in December but the forests remain lush into the new year while dry sunny weather prevails on the beaches.  It’s one of the best times for wildlife when tropical species like monkeys and sloths are joined by migrant birds from the north, humpback whales giving birth in the warm waters, and sea turtles nesting on shore.

When is the Best Weather?

The best weather depends on where as well as when.  There are a number of distinct microclimates in Costa Rica and it can be flooding in one zone but bone dry in another.

We’ve visited at every time of year and while there are advantages to the high dry season (see suggested itineraries ) we often prefer the low rainy season (referred to by the tourism board as the “Green Season”).

Don’t forget while browsing all the weather and climate data that one of the reasons you’re visiting Costa Rica is because it’s covered in amazing rain forests, and surprise, surprise – it rains in the rainforest.

If you’re only looking for sunny days on the playa then Costa Rica has a zone and season that guarantees that too – January , February and March are bone dry in Guanacaste (the northwest beach area).

Crowds, Costs and Other Factors?

There used to be distinct high and low travel seasons in Costa Rica but the secret is out.  July and August are almost as popular as December and January.

There are still cost differences depending on dates.  For example, Christmas and Easter peak weeks are nearly twice as expensive as the average and the shoulder months (May/June and  Sept./Oct./Nov.).

If you’re going to travel over Christmas, New Years or Easter you should book about a year in advance for the best selection and some small boutique hotels and lodges are filled even further in advance.  Shifting your travel by a few days away from the holidays can make a huge difference.

NOAA noted the end of the El Niño weather pattern in August of 2019 which means a return to normal rainfall patterns for 2020.

The New Year is one of the most popular holidays for Ticos, Europeans and snow birds from the U.S. to head to the beach.  It’s very sunny, warm, crowded and expensive.  Wait a couple of days and you’ll discover one of Costa Rica’s best kept travel secrets.  Around January 5th the prices drop, the crowds disappear and there are four to six weeks of perfect weather.  The rainy season just ended so the forests are still green and lush and the rafting rivers and canyoneering waterfalls still have plenty of flow.  – BEST TIME

The number of travelers starts to pick up in February.  The dry season is well established and the trees of the tropical dry forests on the Pacific side in Guanacaste and Nicoya are dropping their leaves.  The rivers in the central mountains still have plenty of water and the Caribbean side is in it’s normal pattern of afternoon showers.  February is a great time to visit the Osa Peninsula and it’s the beginning of the nesting season for the Quetzales in the cloud forests. – BEST TIME

March & April

These two months get lumped together because they’re very similar.  It’s busy because of north American spring breaks and mobbed the week of Easter when the Costa Ricans all go on vacation at once.  The southern, central and eastern parts of the country are still green but some river levels drop too low for rafting.  The northwest is bone dry, the trees are bare and the rivers are reduced to trickles there. – BETTER TIME

May & June

The transition into the rainy season is gradual with showers starting in May and picking up in June.  The dry season dust is settling and the rivers are filling up.  The wildlife breathes a sigh of relief as things cool down a little and the tourists all but disappear.   Sea Turtle nesting is in full swing on many of the beaches for many species. – GOOD TIME

July & August

This is the best off-peak time to visit Costa Rica.  Costa Rica is a great escape from the snow but it’s also a fantastic summer beach destination and the rains typically let up a bit this time of year.  Inland the rivers are at their best for rafting and waterfall rappelling.  The Sea Turtles are still around and the Antarctic Humpback whale pod is taking up residence in the warm waters of the Golfo Dulce.   – BEST TIME

September & October

This would be a good choice if you want the whole Pacific side and central mountains to yourself.  These are the rainiest two months in those zones and the grey weather is accompanied by the biggest discounts of the year.  The Caribbean side on the other hand is enjoying its driest weather.  – BEST TIME FOR THE CARIBBEAN

November & December

The first six weeks are something of a gamble for weather and could easily be the wettest of the year or relatively dry anywhere in Costa Rica.  Discounts are available and reservations are easy to come by.  By the last two weeks of the year it usually drying out in the Pacific northwest but come rain or shine it’s the peak season with the highest prices and biggest crowds everywhere in the country.  – GOOD TIME

That said, this is the most popular time to visit, which means busy coastal resorts and higher prices.

The best time to visit Costa Rica is from mid-December to April. The dry season boasts plenty of sunshine, making it an ideal time for wildlife-spotting, lounging on Costa Rica's best beaches and outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking and white water rafting.

If you can, try to avoid peak season (the North American winter months). This is the most popular (and expensive) time to travel to Costa Rica . If you travel, then, you should weigh up the weather against the cost and the crowds. Bear in mind that you’ll have to book accommodation around three months in advance to secure a room

If you don't mind getting a little wet, visit Costa Rica between May and November when accommodation prices are low. December can be a great time to visit Costa Rica if you enjoy warm and tropical weather, as well as for outdoor activities such as hiking, surfing, and wildlife viewing. Additionally, this is a peak travel season for many tourists, so visitors should plan accordingly and book accommodations in advance. December is also a great time to see whales in Uvita .

Costa Rica is generally booked solid during the peak season, between December and April , when bargains are few and far between. The crowds peter out after Easter, but return again to an extent in July and August. Travellers who prefer to play it by ear are much better off coming during the low or rainy season (euphemistically called the “green season”) when many hotels offer discounts. The months of November, April (after Easter) and May are the best times to visit, when the rains have either just started or just died off, and the country is re-freshed, green and relatively untouristy.

The rainy season in Costa Rica runs roughly from May to mid-Novomber . The weather in Costa Rica usually gives way to afternoon rains and sunny mornings. The rains are heaviest in September and October and, although they can be fierce, will impede you from travelling only in the more remote areas of the country – the Nicoya Peninsula especially – where dirt roads become impassable to all but the sturdiest 4WDs.

In the dry season (roughly mid-Nov to April), the weather in Costa Rica is mostly just that: dry all day, with occasional blustery northern winds blowing in during January or February and cooling

Five species of marine turtle visit Costa Rica’s shores: greens, hawksbills, leatherbacks and olive ridleys, and the strange blunt-nosed loggerhead. The loggerhead seems not to nest in Costa Rica, but can sometimes be seen in Caribbean coastal waters.

Turtle nesting takes place mostly at night, when hundreds of turtles come ashore at a certain time of year. The turtles tend to visit the same beach each time and lay hundreds of thousands of eggs.

The best time of year to visit Costa Rica for turtle-spotting varies, depending on the species. Loggerhead turtles come ashore at Marino Las Baulas National Park on the western Nicoya Peninsula from October to February . Alternatively, you can see them at Tortuguero National Park and Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Reserve from March to May.

A little later in the year, from July to October , green turtles return to their favoured nesting grounds in Tortuguero, with some turtles travelling 2000km to reach their breeding beaches. Hawksbills also come ashore at beaches in Tortuguero, Santa Rosa and Marino Ballena.

Just a few beaches along the Pacific coast, principally Playa Nancite in Santa Rosa and Ostional Wildlife Reserve, olive ridleys storm the sands in their thousands – unusually, often during the day. This event is known as an arribada, and it lasts from July up until November.

We've put together an average temperature and rainfall chart to help give you a rough idea of what to expect of the weather in Costa Rica in any given month. We've looked at three of the country's most popular areas - each very different - to help you get an overall picture: San José , the capital, in the mid-west of the Central Valley; Tortuguero on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast; and Manuel Antonio on the central Pacific coast.

In the wet season (roughly May to mid-November), you can expect sunny mornings and afternoon rains.

Though you shouldn’t expect the kind of colour and verve that you’ll find in fiestas in Mexico or Guatemala, Costa Rica has its fair share of lively holidays and festivals, or feriados, when all banks, post offices, museums and government offices close. In particular, don’t try to travel anywhere during Semana Santa, Holy (Easter) Week: the whole country shuts down from Holy Thursday until after Easter Monday, and buses don’t run. Likewise, the week from Christmas to New Year is invariably a time of traffic nightmares, overcrowded beach towns and suspended transport services.

Provincial holidays, such as Independence Day in Guanacaste (July 25) and the Limón carnival (the week preceding Oct 12) affect local services only, but nonetheless the shutdown is drastic: don’t bet on cashing travellers’ cheques or mailing letters if you’re in these areas at party time.

• January 1 New Year’s Day. Celebrated with a big dance in San José’s Parque Central.
• January Fiesta de Palmares. Two weeks of dancing, music and horse parades in the small town of Palmares.
• February Puntarenas Carnival. A week of parades, music and fireworks at the end of the month.
• February/March Monteverde Music Fest. National and international musicians gather in the cloud forest town for a month of song and dance.
• March 19 El Día de San José (St Joseph’s Day). The patron saint of the San José Province is celebrated with fairs, parades and church services.
• Ash Wednesday Countrywide processions; in Guanacaste, they’re marked by horse, cow and bull parades, with bullfights (in which the bull is not harmed) in Liberia.
• Holy Week (Semana Santa) Dates vary annually, but businesses will often close for the entire week preceding Easter weekend.
• April International Arts festival. San José plays host to two weeks of theatre shows, concerts, dance performances and art exhibitions.
• April 11 El Día de Juan Santamaría. Public holiday to commemorate the national hero who fought at the Battle of Rivas against the American adventurer William Walker in 1856.
• May 1 El Día del Trabajo (Labour Day). The president delivers her annual “state of the nation” address while everyone else heads to the beach.
• May 29 Corpus Christi Day.
• June 29 St Peter’s and St Paul’s Day.
• July Virgen del Mar (Virgin of the Sea). Elaborately decorated boats fill the Gulf of Nicoya on the Saturday nearest to the 16th, celebrating the patron saint of Puntarenas.
• July 25 El Día de Guanacaste (Guanacaste Province only). Celebrations mark the annexation of Guanacaste from Nicaragua in 1824.
• August 2 El Día de La Negrita (Virgin of Los Angeles Day). Worshippers make a pilgrimage to the basilica in Cartago to venerate the miraculous Black Virgin of Los Angeles (La Negrita), the patron saint of Costa Rica.
• August 15 Assumption Day and Mother’s Day.
• September 15 Independence Day, with big patriotic parades celebrating Costa Rica’s independence from Spain in 1821. The highlight is a student relay race across the entire Central American isthmus, carrying a “freedom torch” from Guatemala to Cartago (the original capital of Costa Rica).
• October 12 El Día de la Raza (Columbus Day; Limón Province only). Centred on the carnival, which takes place in the week prior to October 12.
• November 2 All Souls’ Day. Families visit cemeteries to pay their respects to their ancestors.
• Christmas Week The week before Christmas is celebrated in San José with fireworks, bullfights and funfairs.
• December 25 Christmas Day. Family-oriented celebrations with trips to the beach and much consumption of apples and grapes.
• December 27 San José Carnival. Huge parade with colourful floats and plenty of music.

On the southern reaches of the Osa Peninsula, this eco lodge is known for the bright red (and vocal) macaws that you’ll often find flying right over the property. She swam in hot springs bordered by the jungle in the Arenal Volcano area and took hikes — one around the base of a volcano, another to the La Fortuna waterfall, which cascades down 230 feet into a refreshing pool. She went canyoning, then whitewater rafting in Puerto Viejo, embarked on an eco tour boat ride with binoculars, spotting colorful birds and monkeys, and enjoyed beach time along the country’s Caribbean Coast in Cahuita National Park.

“I’m a little more adventurous when I travel,” Haverfield said.

Coloradans love Costa Rica, and that’s not just an anecdotal assumption.

Ahead of the busy summer travel season, Google analyzed every state’s favorite international vacation destination with data collected for a month between March 30 and April 29. Italy, according to Google Trends, emerged as the most popular international destination for U.S. travelers, with 20 states searching for vacations along the Amalfi and Cinque Terre coastlines, in the vineyards of Tuscany, through Rome’s historic landmarks, and so on.

But Coloradans take a flight path less traveled: According to Google’s summer travel report, Costa Rica is the most searched vacation destination for the Centennial State.

“Both Costa Rica and Colorado offer rich outdoor activities, making Costa Rica’s rainforests, volcanoes, and beaches equally appealing to Coloradans who love hiking, mountain biking, and nature adventures,” said Carolina Trejos, director of marketing for the Costa Rica Tourism Board.

The country’s commitment to sustainability and ecotourism, she said, also aligns with Coloradoans’  strong environmental values and the active lifestyles of its residents.

The Colorado-Costa Rica connection

Again and again, Haverfield found herself returning to Costa Rica to explore more of the small country (it’s about the size of West Virginia) that, she said, is big on biodiversity, culture and adventure. Then, a couple of years ago, after seeing a flier in a real estate office window in a beach town, she made a leap and bought a property. Her vacation condo is near a beach in Playas del Coco, which is in Guanacaste on the northern Pacific Coast.

Haverfield’s hypothesis as to one of the reasons why Costa Rica is so popular with Coloradans: It’s chock full of adventure, but with wildly different scenery than the Rocky Mountains offer.

“You get to have these outdoor adventures in lush green environments — and the rainforest is a novelty,” she said.

The appeal of a Costa Rican getaway is aplenty. Twenty-eight percent of the country is protected land, with national parks and reserves, and it beckons with its hissing volcanoes, surfable waves and majestic waterfalls.

One of the best ways to experience the broad offerings and the untamed beauty of Costa Rica is to hike a portion of El Camino de Costa Rica, a 170-mile hiking trail that runs from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean across Costa Rica, Trejos said.

The trail passes through more than 100 communities, reserves, national parks and indigenous territories, including the Barbilla National Park, the Turrialba and Irazu volcanoes, as well as the Los Santos coffee region, she pointed out.

Costa Rica is also one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, which means visitors can see sloths, howler and squirrel monkeys, as well as whales that migrate just off the Pacific Coast. It’s a birder’s paradise, too: Scarlet macaws with feathers in bold primary colors are Costa Rica’s most iconic birds, but the Resplendent Quetzal-wearing metallic blue and green coats are a special sight and considered sacred by several Mesoamerican civilizations.

On one of her dozen or so trips, Haverfield recalled taking a taxi after a visit to the Místico Arenal Hanging Bridges, a lush nature preserve where you can walk among the trees.

The taxi cab driver pulled over his car, grabbed binoculars and passed them around so everyone could see the toucan he noticed in the trees.

“Wildlife spotting is a national pastime,” Haverfield said.

Pura vida a direct flight away

The nonstop flights from Denver also make Costa Rica an accessible destination for Colorado residents.

Both Southwest Airlines and United Airlines provide nonstop flights from Denver (DEN) to San José (SJO) and Liberia (LIR).

In terms of demand, San José ranks as Denver’s top destination in Central America, followed closely by Liberia, which ranks second, according to Michael Konopasek, external communications manager at Denver International Airport.

Overall, Costa Rica is the No. 5 most popular international destination (by country) for travel to and from Denver after Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany, he said.

For years, Costa Rican vacations have filled my own social media feed and the recommendations continued to grow over the years — from my home inspector who surfed in Nosara to friends who have visited stayed at Tabacón Thermal Resort and Spa, which is set in a rainforest with a network of naturally flowing thermal hot springs heated by the Arenal Volcano.

I’ve visited Costa Rica a couple of times for destination weddings, traveling most recently to Ojochal on the southwest coast of the country, with highlights on my vacation that included a Sierpe Wildlife Mangrove Tour to spot Capuchin monkeys and an excursion to the Nauyaca Waterfalls. Striped with streams of water, ropes attached to the rocks tempt should you want to climb the falls and then jump from a ledge.

On my last morning in Ojochal, I was having breakfast at Hotel Three Sixty, a boutique 12-villa retreat that feels like you’re staying amid the clouds and that has an infinity pool that you can spot the Pacific coastline from.

I grabbed the binoculars set on my table next to my iced coffee to see the birds flitting about in the canopy of trees and hoping for one more Capuchin sighting. At the table next to me, I had another sighting, this one quite common: A couple in University of Colorado Buffs gear. We didn’t need Google to tell us the obvious: At any given time should you strike up a conversation with fellow travelers, you’ll quickly learn there’s a Colorado contingent in Costa Rica, eager to compare travel notes.

I spent 12 days seeking Costa Rica's highlights, from the Cloud Forest to the Nicoya Peninsula. I'd revisit 3 places in a heartbeat but one tourist trap I'll never fall into again.

My partner and I decided to splurge on a vacation to Costa Rica for a milestone birthday celebration this year. We spent 12 nights traveling across the western side of the country, trying to soak up as many of the Central American country's highlights as possible.

Costa Rica boasts 5% of the world's biodiversity , with white sand beaches and lush jungles to explore — a huge draw for us as animal lovers. It's also home to a small Blue Zone on the Nicoya Peninsula , where the region's residents are said to live longer, healthier lives than average.

Ultimately, we spent time in Costa Rica's capital city of San Jose, the volcanic hot springs of La Fortuna in Arenal, the cloud forest of Monteverde in Santa Elena, and the beaches of Paquera and Montezuma in the Nicoya region for a taste of the coastal life. While there were moments when we felt our experience was a bit too polished and gimmicky, the trip as a whole was full of incredible wildlife encounters and stunning views I haven't seen anywhere else in the world.

I'd hop on a plane tomorrow to go back if I could, but there are some things I'd skip on a return trip.

Rafting Rio Celeste in Arenal

Our first main stop was La Fortuna, in the shadow of Volcano Arenal — one of Costa Rica's active volcanoes. While this area has plenty of hanging bridge tours and night walks to spot wildlife like sloths and glass frogs, rafting down the Rio Celeste allowed us to see the jungle from a different perspective.

We traveled at the end of May, the start of Costa Rica's wet season, so we encountered fewer tourists than were usually present during our trip. This paid off especially well for our rafting excursion, where we were the only two people on the tour besides our guide.

For about two hours and $75 each, we navigated class II and III rapids — intermediate difficulty, with white caps up to three feet and some obstacles in the way — on the Rio Celeste, taking brief breaks to swim in the beautiful, clear water. We also took drone footage of curious howler monkeys who watched us from the shore.

Our guide pointed out local birds and fish, helping us stop our raft when there were sights we wanted to linger on. Once we were done on the water, we enjoyed fresh fruits and a hot lunch of empanadas, which was included in the tour's cost.

Hiking El Tigre Waterfalls in Monteverde

Hiking in the cloud forest of Monteverde quickly topped our list of things to do while we researched our trip. If I could have extended our stay longer, this is the one thing I'd want to do more of, mostly to see more of the incredible wildlife in the Puntarenas province.

High in the mountains, about 30 minutes from the artsy township of Santa Elena, we went on a self-guided hike to see the El Tigre Waterfalls. The 8-kilometer hike takes you through a humid jungle over several hanging bridges and offers stunning views of nearly a dozen waterfalls — but the animals were the highlight.

We saw massive butterflies, multiple species of hummingbirds and frogs, a toucan, motmots, a concerningly large snake , and glimpses of monkeys in the branches above.

Even in the cooler month of May, it was wildly hot in the jungle, so while the trekking wasn't physically challenging, we opted to catch a 4x4 up the mountain on the last leg of the trail — adding $20 to our $46 entry fee. For a little more than three hours of hiking, it was still a less expensive way to spend the afternoon than other tour options, and it once again felt like we had the trails to ourselves, only crossing paths with a few other groups the entire time we explored.

Bioluminescent kayak tours in Paquera

There are only a handful of places in the world where you can spot bioluminescent algae conditions year-round, and the coastal waters of the Nicoya Peninsula are one of them.

This tour was magical, even in less-than-ideal conditions for the glowing to appear. We shared a kayak and paddled out into the darkness with an enthusiastic guide who explained the chemistry behind bioluminescence and helped us find secluded coves to see the light produced by algae in the water.

The algae likes warm, still waters that get lots of light during the day. When it is charged with enough energy from the sun, it glows bright blue. In less-than-ideal conditions, it can appear greenish or white.

Our algae, which hadn't totally "charged," glowed an eerie white as our paddles broke the water's surface. It couldn't be captured on camera — but that's all the better, according to our guide, who encouraged us to be present in the moment, stepping out of our kayaks in a shallow cove to catch the algae in our shirts and watch it glow against the fabric and our skin.

At $36 each, perhaps we could have explored the coastline ourselves with a rented kayak, but the unique experience left us both feeling like it was one of the best parts of the trip.

Are coffee and chocolate walks worth it?

Costa Rica is known for its coffee and chocolate, so it's nearly impossible to drive through any main stretch of road without seeing signs for tours showing how the products are grown and cultivated.

They're not worth it. Any questions you have about the process can be answered at the gift shop where the tours end, and you're likely to get a free sample regardless of whether you paid for a 2+ hour tour.

We chose to take a night walk that included a coffee and chocolate tour. Our guide (for $60 each) walked us around the grounds of the coffee grove, explained how chocolate was made from cacao beans, and then sent us out with flashlights to look for wildlife in the dark.

While we bought chocolate for our friends and family as souvenirs, we didn't glimpse any exciting animals or glean any particularly interesting knowledge from our guide, so the tour stood out as a pricey decision we could have skipped without losing out on anything.

Overall, our Costa Rican adventure was beautiful, full of incredible sights, exciting excursions, and delicious meals I won't soon forget. If you're planning a trip , skip the highly curated outings to explore the country's less popular attractions — and be quick with your camera; the jungle won't wait.
