• Luxury Caribbean Cruises: What to Know and Where to go

A bright beach aerial shot with white high-rise hotels and bright blue ocean water

If you’ve daydreamed about going on a luxury cruise , chances are you’ve pictured yourself in the Caribbean. With its iconic beaches, swaying palm trees, and crystal clear waters drenched in sunshine, the Caribbean is beside the  Mediterranean , one of the most popular luxury cruise destinations in the world. Its close proximity to several US departure ports makes the Caribbean an easy cruise destination for short and long cruises alike, and there are a wide variety of Caribbean cruises to suit all tastes.

However, the absolute best way to cruise the Caribbean is on a luxury cruise line.  What makes luxury cruises special? Not only are they all-inclusive, floating resort-style vacation packages, they also offer exclusive experiences only available to their passengers. And when visiting a luxury cruise destination as popular as the Caribbean, having premium options can be like experiencing the whole region again for the first time.

Here are some of our top recommendations on when to visit and what to see on your next  luxury cruise vacation .

Why Take a Luxury Cruise to the Caribbean?

Where to go, most popular eastern caribbean ports, most popular western caribbean ports, most popular southern caribbean ports, most underrated caribbean cruise destinations.

A young boy wearing a snorkeling mask holds up a starfish in shocking blue water

From gorgeous sun-kissed beaches caressed by turquoise waves to vibrant rainforests sheltering ancient ruins - the Caribbean offers a little bit of everything. Architecture enthusiasts will love getting a closer look at the colonial ports, while history buffs can channel their inner Indiana Jones exploring Mayan ruins. You can relax on the beach one day, swim with pigs another, and zip-line through lush rainforests the next. Refresh yourself with French Creole cuisine, rum punch, and fresh tropical fruit - all without the hassle of multiple flights or hotels. There are many reasons why especially  luxury cruises for couples are in the Caribbean.

Here are our top 3 reasons why your next luxury cruise should be in the Caribbean.

1. The weather

The Caribbean’s sunny, beachy reputation makes it a prime getaway destination, especially during the cold, dark winter months. While there are some weather issues to be aware of before you book your trip (which we’ll talk more about later), the weather in the Caribbean is generally sublime. Warm days and nights give it a forever-summer feel, even in the dead of winter. Rain is common, particularly in late summer and fall, but it’s fairly easy to plan your trip around serious storms.

2. Cultural and historical diversity

Despite many islands feeling like their own secluded paradise, the Caribbean has historically been quite the melting pot. Dutch, French, British, Indian, West African, and indigenous cultures have intertwined in this region for centuries. Colonial architecture is common, as is fusion-style cuisine. While it’s important to recognize that this unique cultural intermingling is the result of imperialism and exploitation, it has also led to the Caribbean’s famously welcoming and friendly attitude. Many islands celebrate their diverse heritage, and will likely invite you to join them in their joie de vivre.

3. Beaches and natural attractions

Just like the weather, the Caribbean is  world-famous for beaches . White sand beaches dotted by swaying palm trees are common, and some islands also boast lush rainforests and high mountain peaks. Many islands are made from ancient (or not-so-ancient) volcanoes, and they sustain massive amounts of life. Flora and fauna are abundant, from leafy flowering plants to turtles, stingrays, and tons of fish. There’s plenty to explore on a Caribbean cruise, so be sure to budget both beach days and active excursions.

Winter is easily  the best time to cruise the Caribbean. From December to April, the weather is ideal, with little rainfall and typically warm to hot days and milder nights. This makes it the perfect time for cruisers from the US, Europe, and Britain to escape the chilly winter and thaw out in the sunshine.

As is typical with cruise destinations, ideal weather conditions mean peak season also falls during winter and early spring. This means the Caribbean is more likely to have more crowds and cruises will be more expensive during this time. However, more excursions will usually be offered, and itineraries are more stable.

An option for cruisers seeking discount luxury cruises is to go in early summer when rainstorms are more likely but the islands will be calmer and luxury cruise ships emptier. June to August is the beginning of hurricane season so storms, rough seas, and last-minute itinerary changes are more likely, but it may be worth it to avoid overcrowded ports and extreme prices.

Hurricane season

While you may see incredible luxury cruise deals from June to November, be aware that this is hurricane season in the Caribbean. It may not be such an issue on mega-ships, but rough seas can ruin small luxury cruise ships. Be particularly wary of cruises during September and October, as this is the height of hurricane season. If you do choose to cruise during these months, we highly recommend you invest in  good cruise travel insurance - just in case.

It’s also worth noting that many Caribbean islands were ravaged by hurricanes last year. We recommend double-checking with your cruise line or shore excursion provider to make sure all your preferred activities are available before you book.

When it comes to picking the perfect luxury Caribbean cruise itinerary, it’s important to note that Caribbean cruises typically fall into three categories: Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean, and Southern Caribbean. Longer cruises (lasting a week or more) can visit all three categories, but shorter cruises usually stick to just one.

As many luxury cruise lines tend to offer small ships exclusively, luxury Caribbean cruises can look a bit different from their mainstream counterparts. Luxury lines like Crystal Cruises , Regent Seven Seas , and Viking Cruises still visit many of the most popular ports in each area. Meanwhile, small ship cruise lines Ponant , SeaDream Yacht Club , and Star Clippers offer even more immersive and secluded itineraries.

Here are some of the best ports to visit during your luxury Caribbean cruise, plus some hidden gems you may have missed out on.

The Eastern Caribbean is ideal for cruisers seeking beachy relaxation and plenty of aquatic adventures. Islands are close together, so it’s common for Eastern Caribbean cruises to be port-heavy, with fewer sea days. Shore excursions usually focus on more strenuous activity, like hiking or biking, or more individual pursuits like shopping.

Here are some of our favorite cruise ports in the Eastern Caribbean.

Nassau, Bahamas

An aerial shot of five cruise ships at port in shocking blue waters

Although technically the Bahamas aren’t in the Caribbean Sea, Nassau tops the charts as one of the most popular destinations for Eastern Caribbean cruises. The capital of the Bahamas, the  port of Nassau is close to the city’s downtown, making it easily accessible for cruisers. Beautiful white sand beaches slope gently into brilliant blue water, making this luxury cruise destination ideal for beach days. Other great excursion options include golf and snorkeling.

St. Maarten / St. Martin

People on a white sand beach take pictures of a low-flying airplane coming in for a landing in St. Maarten

It may surprise you to find out that St. Maarten and St. Martin are very distinct from each other, and each offers something different. St. Maarten has Dutch roots, while St. Martin is French. St. Maarten welcomes larger cruise ships; St. Martin invites small vessels. Both sides of the island have great beaches, and St. Martin’s Baie Orientale is notoriously “clothing optional.” This is a great destination for catamaran excursions, beaches, and shopping.

St. Barts (St. Barthélemy)

Two tables with chairs on a beach beneath a dark cabana canopy with a palm tree

An ideal Eastern Caribbean luxury cruise destination, St. Barts boasts plenty of prime beaches and charming architecture. But the real draw of this island is the shopping. Haute couture may seem unlikely with iguanas roaming the isle, but St. Barts’ French roots grow deep, and boutique shopping is excellent. Dining options are also superb - try Restaurant Le Gaiac for an al fresco meal.

Western Caribbean cruises tend to focus more on culture, history, architecture, art, and food. With plenty of ports in Mexico and Central America, these itineraries are infused with active shore excursions and exploratory spirit. Head inland to explore Mayan ruins, zip line through the rainforest in Belize, or swim with stingrays in Grand Cayman.

Here are some of the Western Caribbean’s most popular cruise ports.

Cozumel, Mexico

Shocking blue ocean waters lie just beyond white stone cliffs with a thatch umbrella

One of the Western Caribbean’s most famous hotspots, Cozumel combines stunning beaches with ancient history, shopping, and wildlife. This small island boasts a diverse array of activities from swimming with dolphins to exploring the  Mayan ruins of San Gervasio . Take a cab to San Miguel in the island’s interior for prime shopping, or hop on a ferry to nearby Playa del Carmen to explore Mayan site Tulum.

Grand Cayman Island

An aerial shot of two people floating in bright blue water with white sand beach on the left side of the image

Another well-known and well-loved port, Grand Cayman Island wows cruisers with its close encounters with sea life. Go snorkeling with Stingrays in Stingray City, a shallow sandbar where the sea creatures come to catch a meal. Or visit the island’s turtle farm to learn more about sea turtles. Beyond animals, Grand Cayman also offers excellent shopping and nightlife, though it can get very busy during the high season.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Lush palm trees and dense vegetation extend past a white sand beach and a whitewashed building

Jamaica’s second-largest city and unofficial capital of tourism, Montego Bay delivers excellent shopping, beaches, and unparalleled golf courses. Luxury beaches are abundant, so plan for a tan. Nature lovers will also delight in the island’s many natural attractions, including the picturesque Dunn’s River Falls. While Jamaica can get crowded during peak season, exclusive luxury excursions are available.

The Southern Caribbean is generally less crowded than the Eastern or Western Caribbean, as it’s further afield from common US departure ports like Port Miami or Fort Lauderdale. For this reason, many luxury cruise lines focus on immersive experiences in these culturally diverse and naturally beautiful islands.

Here are our top picks for the most popular cruise ports in the Southern Caribbean.

St. Kitts, St. Kitts and Nevis

Green letters above a yellow arched entryway in a building beneath bright blue sky

The island of St. Kitts makes up one half of the country St. Kitts and Nevis. Its towering, verdant mountains make for great hiking and ziplining excursions, and its wildlife-filled waters are great for snorkeling and diving. Take a walking tour through historic Basseterre or a railroad tour of the island. You could also rent a catamaran to nearby Nevis and spend a day on the water, or simply lounge on a beach.

Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda

A hill at sunset dipping into calm waters with palm fronds in the foreground

Pink and white sand beaches give this island a whimsical feel. Shore excursions range from shopping to helicopter tours and diving. Plus, Antigua’s colonial past lends it a colorful and charming city center, perfect for a walking tour or a night out on the town.

Beautiful blue waters with a small boat in the foreground with a dramatic triangular green mountain in the background

One of the wilder islands in terms of natural attractions, St. Lucia is home to reefs, rainforests, and even volcanoes. It’s a favorite getaway among the well-heeled and has earned its reputation as one of the Caribbean’s most stunning locales. Whether you stay on the beach, venture inland for a hiking or adventure excursion, or sample fresh-caught fish from the reefs, St. Lucia is an unforgettable cruise destination.

Since the Caribbean is one of the most popular and well-trod cruise regions in the world, it’s likely you’ve heard of these hidden gems. They may not exactly be secrets, but these cruise destinations certainly offer a little something extra that it’s worth discovering for yourself.

Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

A white sand beach with blue waters, green palm trees and bushes, and large white and gray boulders

Dwarfed in many ways by neighboring Tortola, Virgin Gorda is nevertheless a stunner in its own right. With yacht clubs, wintering movie stars and billionaires, and incredible natural geologic formations, Virgin Gorda is 8.5 square miles of pristine Caribbean paradise. It’s only the third-largest of the British Virgin Islands, and its small size means few cruise lines can access it. Because of that intimacy and exclusivity, it’s a favorite port of call for luxury lines like Windstar and SeaDream Yacht Club.

Cartagena, Colombia

A partially obscured photo of a street with cars, bright blue and orange buildings, and lush palm trees

Colombia’s picturesque 16th-century port city is a charming entrypoint into the South American continent. While larger cruise lines like Princess Cruises  and Royal Caribbean do venture there, Cartagena is best experienced aboard the Seabourn cruise line. Opt for an immersive itinerary aboard Seabourn Sojourn to sidestep the frequent complaint from megaship cruisers that there wasn’t enough time to explore.

Bequia Island, The Grenadines

A wind-worn tree overlooking nothing but blue sky

If you’re looking for pure relaxation and luxury, visit Bequia Island in the Grenadines. This tiny island measures just 7 square miles and is particularly popular among the yachting and sailing crowd. Choose a sailing on Royal Clipper by Star Clippers, Windstar’s Star Legend, or Silversea’s Silver Shadow. This island is still something of a secret among luxury cruisers, but it comes highly rated by those who value slowing down for an afternoon and taking it all in.

5 best luxury Caribbean cruises for next winter's getaway

Janice Wald Henderson

Imagine: You're lounging poolside in a tranquil port, your novel the only distraction from an azure sky melting into a turquoise sea. No jostling passengers or behemoth ships docked on either side, casting shadows, blocking breezes and blaring music.

Later, a white-gloved butler welcomes you back after a small-group excursion — perhaps lunch at an exclusive resort — with complimentary Champagne and caviar. More than likely, you're staying in a suite or oversized cabin, your plush bed dressed in silken sheets and fluffy down pillows.

Welcome to luxury cruising in the Caribbean, where personalized pampering and indulgence go hand-in-(white)-glove with exploring less-visited islands and serene harbors away from tourist crowds — and where access to fancy hotels, private clubs and championship golf courses proves easy-peasy. Upscale ships retreat to the tropics to escape from winter's chill, and you will want to book early for the best prices and suite availability.

To inspire your next getaway, we've chosen the five best luxury Caribbean cruises for the 2024-2025 winter season.

SeaDream Yacht Club

luxury cruises in the caribbean

Would you like to yacht your way through the Caribbean? Then consider SeaDream Yacht Club 's 112-passenger SeaDream I and twin SeaDream II cruise ships.

On these teeny posh ships, the passenger-to-crew ratio is one-to-one, and outdoor space abounds. Scoring deck chairs, a romantic alfresco dining table for two or a massage in the Thai-inspired SeaDream Spa is a snap.

Fares include superb, sophisticated cuisine (plus delicious raw, vegan and organic dishes), fine wines, gratuities and watersport activities like paddleboarding, jet-skiing and even a fun slide whooshing you from the yacht to the sea.

A seven-night Leeward Islands Discovery on SeaDream I, round-trip Philipsburg, Sint Maarten, sounds particularly alluring (although every SeaDream cruise sounds, well, dreamy). In most cases, you'll anchor, rather than dock, at these beyond-beautiful islands, with primarily private yachts for company.

Sail into halcyon ports, like Norman Island in the British Virgin Islands, for stunner hikes and superb snorkeling and scuba diving. The ship's early morning anchor off Spanish Town in Virgin Gorda is designed so that you may experience "The Baths" before the hordes of big-ship cruisers arrive. Wait until you see this natural wonder of maze-like boulders and caverns leading to a powdery white-sand beach and crystalline waters.

Savor St. Barths' French vibe, where chichi boutiques and Paris-meets-the-tropics restaurants thrive. Scuba dive, swim with dolphins, hike and bike with ship officers or play golf at a posh resort.

A major SeaDream perk is the signature Champagne and Caviar Splash (perhaps on Antigua's Prickly Pear Island), with officers serving caviar from a surfboard in shallow water. Smiling servers roll up their pants, wade in and ensure glasses of bubbly are filled to the top.

SeaDream I departs on this seven-night cruise, sailing round-trip from St. Maarten, on February 1, 2025. Fares start from $3,999 per person.

Silversea Cruises

luxury cruises in the caribbean

Pretty much every moment feels pinch-me on board Silversea Cruises ' 596-passenger Silver Moon . Revel in a spacious suite with a smiling butler primed for pampering. Sustainable Ars Italica Oscietra caviar is served anytime, anywhere, at no extra charge; such sensational roe normally costs a bundle.

On a 10-night cruise, you can visit all eight restaurants on board and spend the last evening dining in-suite, with your butler serving dinner course-by-course. Culinary highlights include Caribbean-inspired dishes at S.A.L.T. Kitchen, hand-fashioned pastas at La Terrazza and Kaiseki's exquisite Japanese plates.

Post-dinner, belly-up to Silver Note's bar; the velvety-voiced jazz singer always amazes. Alcohol and most eateries are complimentary, and the no-tipping culture makes onboard life more enjoyable.

Around the ship, you can learn to prepare Caribbean cuisine in a hands-on cooking class, dance to the Panorama Lounge's live band, break a sweat in the Fitness Centre or seek Lady Luck at the casino. Or succumb to treatments at Zagara Beauty Spa; the wide array includes massages, body wraps and acupuncture. With so much happening on board, you might forget to leave the ship.

Please don't; the Caribbean ports are perfect, and the shore excursions are complimentary. On this round-trip Fort Lauderdale cruise, you can explore several idyllic isles, each one prettier than the next.

In über-glam St. Barths, wave credit cards in posh boutiques, snorkel in coral reefs teeming with bright-hued fish or join a romantic catamaran sail at sunset. In Antigua, book a Segway beach tour or zip-line through a rainforest. On St. Kitts, sink into a waiting chaise on Cockleshell Bay and splash in the ever-inviting Caribbean Sea. Silver Moon also offers tee times at the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club — one of the Caribbean's most scenic — and a lazy day at the exclusive Carambola Beach Club.

Silver Moon departs on this 10-night Caribbean cruise, sailing round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, on January 6, 2025. Fares start from $5,900 per person.

luxury cruises in the caribbean

The 600-passenger Seabourn Ovation shows superbly on a Caribbean cruise. The casually elegant (think country club-ish) Seabourn ship offers guests multiple opportunities to lounge outside, admiring the region's impeccable scenery. Don't be surprised when servers quickly learn your name and favorite cocktail.

Want to splurge? Book a day in the Retreat, a VIP enclave with 15 private cabanas circling a central whirlpool and shaded by a flower-shaped canopy. Here, melt into a massage in the Spa Treatment Cabana or schmooze with fellow passengers at the private bar.

Even if you don't visit the Retreat, you'll love that this all-suite ship includes so many amenities, including primo caviar service, gratuities, wine and spirits and fine dining. (Don't miss Solis, the new signature Mediterranean restaurant launching in 2024; the buzz is it will be a knockout.)

Balance fine dining with working out at the expansive, well-equipped fitness center. Find your Zen at wellness-driven programs designed in partnership with integrative medicine pioneer and icon Dr. Andrew Weil.

The 14-night Exotic Caribbean in Depth itinerary provides ample time to revel in the ship's amenities and pleasures ashore. This cruise, sailing round-trip from Barbados, visits St. Lucia, Antigua, Barbuda, Guadeloupe, British Virgin Islands and Nevis. At Sopers Hole (Frenchmans Cay), BVI, rub shoulders with the yachting crowd at cafes, restaurants and bars. Relish time in Bequia (the Grenadines' largest isle) in Admiralty Bay, another yachter hot spot.

Seabourn's Caviar in the Surf is paradisiacal perfection. It stars a lavish beach barbecue luncheon on a stunning white-sand beach, with uniformed crew members serving Champagne and caviar at a surfboard bar.

Seabourn Ovation departs on this 14-night cruise, sailing round-trip from Barbados, on January 18, 2025. Fares start from $6,999 per person.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

luxury cruises in the caribbean

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection 's two all-suite ships totally vibe superyacht. The second — and newest — ship, 448-passenger Ilma (which debuts in 2024), will cosset you in luxury and indulgence, with a nearly one-to-one passenger-to-crew ratio.

Expect abundant outdoor space for lounging, dining alfresco or enjoying watersports like kayaking and paddleboarding from the yacht's marina. On Ilma, even the smallest 294-square-foot suite provides a generous-sized private veranda, with features like an espresso machine and a double-vanity bath with an oversized shower.

Count on many inclusions, such as five restaurants, 24-hour in-suite dining, a personal concierge, alcohol and gratuities. A signature Ritz-Carlton spa, gym and humidor also beckon. Good to know that the ship hosts RitzKids programs year-round (three a day for ages 4 to 12) with enhanced activities during the summer and holidays — rare on a small luxury ship.

The seven-night round-trip Bridgetown, Barbados cruise includes visits to Soufrière, St. Lucia, a small town with tropical colonial architecture and natural attractions such as rainforests and a "drive-in" volcano. For another St. Lucia outing, bathe in mineral-rich mud in Sulphur Springs Park before savoring lunch at the ritzy Ladeira Resort.

In Grenada, go snorkeling among bright-hued tropical fish, and in Martinique, join a 4x4 island tour, which includes swimming in a cooling river and strolling black sand beaches.

Ilma departs on this seven-night cruise, sailing round-trip from Barbados, on March 14, 2025. Fares start from $5,800 per person.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

luxury cruises in the caribbean

All Regent Seven Seas Cruises ships ooze luxury and opulence. The all-inclusive line really is — think valet laundry service, unlimited shore excursions, seven superb dining venues and airfare among inclusions.

Regent's newest vessel, 746-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur, ups the line's incredibly high bar. Like its siblings, this extravagant ship drips in exquisite marble and crystal. Its multi-million-dollar 1,600-piece art collection features the first Fabergé egg to reside permanently at sea.

Your jaw will drop at the sleek redesign of some of Seven Seas Grandeur's suites and public venues. All-suite accommodations begin at 300 square feet and run up to the 4,443-square-foot Regent Suite . The latter touts a spa with a steam room and Jacuzzi, two original Picasso lithographs, handblown Lalique art vases, butler service and a private car and guide in each port.

Entertainment overhauls include new high-energy shows, like tango-driven Pasión. The Serene Spa & Wellness emphasizes mindful living, with reflexology and meditation among offerings.

The 10-night Champagne Colored Sands itinerary is round-trip Miami, offering easy access to the Caribbean from home airports. At Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, you can luxuriate for hours at beachfront resort Emotions by Hodelpa Playa Dorada, snorkel in a reef aquarium or dare to swim and snorkel with sharks. On St. Barth's, transfer to the exquisite Hotel Manapany, where celebs and other famous faces frequent; this outing includes an organic two-course lunch showcasing hotel-grown ingredients.

Seven Seas Grandeur departs on this 10-night cruise, sailing round-trip from Miami, on February 13, 2025. Fares start from $7,499 per person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a passport for a Caribbean cruise?

luxury cruises in the caribbean

Yes, you will need a passport that is valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date.

Do you need vaccinations for a Caribbean cruise?

You will require to be fully vaccinated for Covid, but no other inoculations are required.

Is a Visa required for a Caribbean cruise?

Typically visas are not required for North American passport holders. For other nationalities, this would have to be researched further. You may check with local consulates as well.

Top Caribbean FAQs

How long are Caribbean cruises?

Celebrity offers a wide range of cruises all over the Caribbean, from  three-night getaways  to 12-night voyages. Relax and rejuvenate in The Bahamas and CocoCay, or over a week visiting Mexico and Grand Cayman, or San Juan, the British Virgin Islands, and St. Kitts. On our longer Caribbean itineraries, we visit the Southern Caribbean, Central America, and South America, crossing the Panama Canal.

Can I cruise during hurricane season?

Yes! Celebrity’s ships sail, between June and November, which is regarded as hurricane season.

Only a very small portion of cruises that sail to the Caribbean during a storm season are actually affected by these storms. Though you may encounter slightly rougher water on a cruise during hurricane season, there are many systems in place to detect any hurricane weather along your cruise route, ensuring your ship’s captain and crew will be able to chart a path around any bad weather or make modifications to the itinerary to keep you safe. Celebrity’s state-of-the-art ships are built for stability, keeping movement in rough seas to a minimum.

See our blog post about  cruising during hurricane season.

Where are the best beaches in the Caribbean?

Every island in the Caribbean has beautiful beaches, from rocky coves to long sweeps of white sand lined with umbrellas and buzzing beach bars. Naming the  Caribbean's best beaches  is a purely subjective topic, as everybody has their favorite. Some of the most famous, though, include Grand Cayman’s gorgeous Seven Mile Beach, and the dazzling white sand of Eagle Beach on Aruba. Dickenson Beach in Antigua is a picturesque paradise, while Crane Beach on Barbados boasts pale pink sand.

Honeymoon Beach on St. John is home to one of the most romantic settings in the Caribbean, while The Baths on Virgin Gorda is a day full of adventure, where you can hike through caves that lead you straight down to secret rock pools. Rent an overwater cabana for the day at  the Coco Beach Club on CocoCay in the Bahamas, or relax with a cocktail in hand on this natural coral island at any of the island's white sandy beaches. Deciding which beach is your personal favorite is all part of the fun.

What can I do besides go to the beach?

The Caribbean has a rich culture that extends beyond beach life. Explore colorful streets and colonial-era forts in Old San Juan, and ride the St. Kitts Scenic Railway across verdant countryside with beautiful ocean views. Take a day off from sunbathing and join a horseback riding tour along St. Maarten’s stunning coastline. Explore Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua or climb the Pitons in St. Lucia, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Join a gourmet walking tour of Charlotte Amalie in the U.S. Virgin Islands to learn about its culinary culture, or stroll through the Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Park on Grand Cayman. Learn about spice cultivation in Grenada or join a nature walk in Barbados. It doesn’t matter how many times you visit the Caribbean—you will never run out of things to do.

Do I need a passport to cruise to the Caribbean?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information  here .

Not all Caribbean cruises require a passport. If you are an American citizen traveling from the U.S. to the Bahamas or Mexico on a closed-loop cruise, starting and ending at the same U.S. port, a state-issued ID and an original U.S. birth certificate is sufficient.

On other Caribbean cruises, you can enter with your U.S. passport book, passport card, Trusted Traveler card (Nexus, SENTRI, or FAST), or an enhanced driver’s license. See our  blog post  for more information.

When’s the best time to cruise?

You can now cruise the Caribbean year round on one of our newest Edge series ships, Celebrity Beyond, starting in 2024. The Caribbean is a cruiser’s dream vacation in every season, but the best time to cruise the Caribbean can depend on your schedule, your travel budget and your travel desires. Discover the  best times to cruise the Caribbean  on our blog.

Where do Caribbean cruises depart from?

Celebrity’s Caribbean cruises depart from Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa, Port Canaveral and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

What should I pack for a Caribean Cruise?

When  packing for a cruise to the Caribbean , you’ll need clothing for a warm, sometimes humid climate. Bring plenty of beachwear, a sun hat, sunglasses, coverups, water shoes if you’re visiting coral beaches, and reef-friendly sunblock.

If you book a snorkeling excursion, all gear will be provided, but where there are places that you may want to snorkel independently, consider bringing your own equipment.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through cover ups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

Is it easy to get around the Caribbean islands?

The easiest way to get around each island is to  book a shore excursion .

What language is spoken in the Caribbean?

English is the main language spoken in the Caribbean. However, there are many other languages spoken within the region. On the ABC Islands and St. Maarten (on the Dutch side), Dutch is the official language, but locals also speak Papamiento, a hybrid of Dutch, Spanish, and various West African languages. In the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, it’s Spanish. On the French side of St. Maarten/St. Martin, it’s French. Across the Caribbean, you’ll hear Creole spoken, or patois, which varies from island to island.

3 reasons to visit the Caribbean

luxury cruises in the caribbean

To discover the incredible seabeds

Visiting the Caribbean by boat is the best way to explore the islands spread between Florida and South America. Diving and snorkelling excursions will allow you to admire the remarkable coral reefs and the numerous endemic species in the clear, calm and shallow waters. You can peacefully explore the seabed, even as a beginner. On diving excursions, it's not unusual to encounter rays and sea turtles , particularly in Saint Barthélemy in the French Antilles. Like in the Tobago Cays, multicoloured fish such as parrotfish and squirrelfish mix with barracudas, crabs, lobsters and octopuses in a breathtaking display.

To enjoy the paradisical beaches

With fine, white sand and palms and coconut trees with fronds that tickle the surface of the crystalline water, the Caribbean's beaches are as pretty as a picture. Travellers who opt for a Caribbean cruise can also enjoy and the ultimate relaxation granted by the magnificent bays. From a private beach on the island of Mayreau to the long stretches of white sand on Bequia island in the Grenadines to Grand Anse, one of the archipelago's most beautiful beaches, there is no shortage of idyllic ocean panoramas, enchanting calls and unforgettable memories.

To visit the outstanding natural areas

Head to Les Saintes to discover Mire Hill with its botanic garden which offers a gorgeous view out over the Bay of les Saintes, Grand Îlet , a paradise for turtles and seabirds and the Pain de Sucre peninsula , a rock formation made from a flow of molten basalt rock. Visit Soufrière on the island of Saint Lucia to see the iconic Les Pitons , a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose volcanic plugs are the source of the rejuvenating hot sulphur springs.

luxury cruises in the caribbean

Discover the Grenadines archipelago

A Caribbean gem with a sweet name to match, the Grenadines are a string of islands that extend across the cobalt blue water. Holidaying in the heart of the Grenadines means lazy beach days and leisurely island hopping. During your cruise, you will discover Mayreau , the smallest inhabited island in the archipelago with its beautifully preserved coastline, and the elegant town of Saint George's , nestled in a sheltered bay in Grenada. In the south, long stretches of white sand fringed with coconut palms entice swimmers and divers eager to discover the amazing seabeds . Whether you're a keen diver or looking for a peaceful getaway, the Grenadines archipelago offers a myriad of isolated bays protected by a coral reef, frequented by multicoloured fish and sea turtles.

luxury cruises in the caribbean

Wax lyrical about Saint Lucia

With its picture-perfect landscapes , this small, English-speaking island hides a wealth of luxuriant, wild landscapes. The, fine sandy beaches, crystalline waters , hidden waterfalls and twin pitons — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — are just a few of the natural wonders the island of Saint Lucia has to offer. But what really makes it stand out from its Caribbean neighbours is its famous La Soufrière volcano. Here, the dense rainforest that covers the island gives way to a lunar-esque, sulphurous landscape where clouds of smoke seeping from the ground hint at the majestic volcano's continuous activity.

Escape to les Saintes - Guadeloupe

Made up of nine tiny islets, the Saintes archipelago was first discovered by Christopher Columbus and now sparks the imaginations of visitors with its breathtaking panoramas. Ranked the third most beautiful bay in the world and famed throughout the Antilles, Les Saintes Bay — formerly frequented by pirates and bandits — is now a highly sought-after mooring. Discover the rich and diverse seabed beneath the clear waters on an unforgettable diving excursion and get lost in the horizon as you watch the colourful saintoise fishing boats take to the seas.

The 11 Best Luxury Cruise Lines, According to T+L's Experts

These luxury cruise lines offer stunning suites, fine dining, and exceptional itineraries.

Meena Thiruvengadam is a lifelong traveler and veteran journalist who has visited more than 50 countries across six continents. Her writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal , Departures , TripSavvy , and other publications.

luxury cruises in the caribbean

Cruising is back — and you might even say it's better than ever. "Vacations at sea are suddenly one of the biggest things in travel," Travel + Leisure cruise expert Paul Brady reported recently, as summer air travel is looking progressively messier but the cruise industry continues to stabilize post-pandemic. For those looking to plan a cruise, whether it's a last-minute trip for the summer or a 2024 around-the-world cruise, we've narrowed down the best luxury cruise lines to ferry you to some of the world's most mesmerizing destinations in comfort. Here, our favorite luxury cruise lines in the world.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

When this luxury cruise line says it's all-inclusive, it's not overstating. Everything from shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and laundry to gratuities, top-shelf liquor, and business-class international flights are included with Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' fares. While each luxurious suite features ocean views, nothing beats the view from the epic 4,000-square-foot, two-bedroom Regent Suite, which has two wraparound balconies, three walk-in closets, two Picasso lithographs, and a grand piano.

For the best in-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship, Kelly Cochrane, executive chef of Regent Seven Seas Cruises tells T+L.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises has just seven ships, but the debut of the brand-new Oceania Vista catapults this cruise line into the luxury division. The cruise line's relatively new Go Local shore excursions for small groups bring travelers to under-the-radar destinations, T+L contributing editor and long-time cruiser Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon reported recently. Her 2022 cruise on Riviera included 70 excursions "from canoeing Croatia’s Cetina River to cooking classes in Athens."

If you've ever dreamed of having your own butler, Silversea is the luxury cruise line for you. In fact, Silversea's butlers take white-glove service to a whole new level — they'll handle your laundry with more care than you do, scour port towns to find your favorite tastes of home, and even help you pack and unpack your suitcase. Further, Silversea's new culinary program, nicknamed S.A.L.T. (for Sea and Land Taste), brings the taste of destinations on board through cooking classes. Of course, there's no need to cook for yourself aboard a Silversea ship, as each one features several restaurants with multi-course menus to whet your appetite every night.

Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year. Viking came in at No. 1 in T+L's best mid-size ship category and river cruise category. Golden said the WBA Hall of Fame honoree's 50 river "longships" are "light-filled floating boutique hotels."

Laureen Robert / Courtesy of Ponant

French luxury cruise line Ponant aims to make passengers feel as if they're traveling on their own private yachts. Guests enjoy Ladurée macarons, Veuve Clicquot Champagne, and luxurious Hermès bath products on board. Each of the company's ships features an onboard spa with massage cabins and either a Turkish bath or sauna. Ponant's luxurious small ships sail to remote destinations like Antarctica, incorporating once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as eclipse spotting from the edge of the earth. The company also partners with Smithsonian and Disney on certain sailings.

Seabourn cruises to all seven continents, and most recently launched Seabourn Venture , "marking the first time the Carnival Corporation–owned luxury cruise line will offer adventurous sailings on an expedition ship built for extreme environments," Brady reported. (The sibling ship to Venture , Seabourn Pursuit arrives later this year.) The World's Best Award-winning cruise line has all-suite ships and "is known for its onboard service and over-the-top food including complimentary caviar and Thomas Keller steakhouses on ships such as the  Seabourn Ovation, " Brady said.

Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises ' luxury small ships call on 150 ports throughout Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific, and there's no way you'll go hungry on the journey. Exquisite onboard menus have been designed by acclaimed chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants. (You'll have to pay extra for alcohol, but all meals and a Windstar signature onboard barbecue — a feast of whole suckling pig, shrimp brochette, and more — are included.) The cruise line is not only a T+L World's Best Awards Hall of Fame honoree, it has a "long-standing partnership with the James Beard Foundation ," Brady reported, and regularly brings chefs on board for culinary-focused sailings. Yes, chef.

Courtesy of Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

Whether it's a river or an ocean you want to cruise, Scenic can take you there in style. The luxury cruise line operates river cruises in Europe and Asia, while ocean cruises on Scenic Eclipse (and the forthcoming Scenic Eclipse II ) can take guests to Antarctica, the Arctic, Australia, South America, and Greenland, among other coveted destinations. On board, you'll find fine dining, expansive spas and fitness facilities, and butler service.

Cunard Line

Jonathan Atkin / Courtesy of Cunard Line

This British luxury cruise line is known for its transatlantic service, which also transports pets between its headquarters in Southampton, England, and New York City. Cunard operates three ships with a fourth in the works, though only the Queen Mary 2 sails the transatlantic route. It's a cruise line that takes formality seriously; white-gloved waiters serve afternoon tea each day at 3:30 p.m. State rooms include 24-hour room service and evening turndown service with chocolates. Don't forget your tux, the gala nights are black tie.

Paul Gauguin Cruises

Roger Paperno / Courtesy of Paul Gauguin Cruises

Paul Gauguin Cruises operates just one ship, but it is exquisite, hosting 330 guests and sailing only in the South Pacific to destinations like Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Named the best small-ship ocean cruise line in T+L's 2022 World's Best Awards, Golden said the line is known for Tahitian-inspired massage techniques in the onboard spa and noted that cruisers particularly love the wonderful staff.

Highlights:

The Caribbean comprises over 7000 islands, each with its own unique history and rich culture. Continuing on the fantastic island hopping cruise, Emerald Sakara eased into the charming bay of Terre De Haut in Guadaloupe. The French territory is a small slice of southern France, mixed with the zest and colour of Creole cultures. David toured through the colonial era church and Fort Napoléon des Saintes, before exploring the unique cliffs of volcanic rock from his see-through kayak.

From one beautiful backdrop to the next, the following day they arrived at the capital of Antigua and Barbuda, St John's. David left the beaches behind and headed inland for an adventure with Antigua Rainforest Zipline and Canopy Tours! Featuring 13 thrilling ziplines, David started with the small ones and worked up to the 100 metre long "Screamer!". Back on the ground, David visited Nelson's Dockyards, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Used as a base for the British Royal Navy in the 1700's, it is the last working Georgian era dockyard in the world.

Back on board Emerald Sakara, and back to the business of more relaxing and indulging! David's tip for the best way to end a day of sightseeing is relaxing in the infinity-style Aqua Pool on deck 6, or soaking in the bubbling Spa Pool on deck 7, as you take in the stunning island views. The main restaurant on board is La Cucina, an a-la-carte fine dining experience, with the tastiest food on the high seas! David had a chat with some of his fellow guests and they all agreed that luxury cruising is fantastic, as you only have to unpack once, and every time you wake up in your spacious suite, there is a different view out the window!

The next dreamy location was the islands of St Kitts and Nevis and David was amazed by the impressive Brimstone Hill Fortress, which dates back to the late 1600's, with citadels, barracks and ramparts covering an entire hill top. The tour through the island's historic sites continued with a visit to Fairview Great House and Garden which was built for French military officers in 1701. Now fully restored as a museum, it offers tours and Caribbean cooking experiences, where David enjoyed getting hands on in the kitchen. With the guidance of the chef he whipped up a feast of jerk pork loin, steamed fish and coconut bread and butter pudding. The flavour, fun, spice and colour of the Caribbean was reflected in the tasty food and the recipes were a great souvenir.

After exploring the smaller islands, the cruise journeyed north to one of the most famous Caribbean islands, Saint Barthélemy, or St Barts. Best known as a haven for the rich and famous, with luxury villas, celebrity visitors and high-end stores, it is also incredibly beautiful. David joined a snorkelling tour of secluded Colombier Bay, which can only be accessed by boat or foot. The clear water made for a fantastic morning of snorkelling with green turtles, lobster and colourful reef fish. The fun wasn't all underwater though, as David spent the afternoon kicking back at La Guerite beach club.

The main town and capital of St Barts is Gustavia, named after Swedish King Gustav, situated on a picturesque harbour. The popular tourist destination is full of designer stores, and David found the suitably flash lounge and wine cellar 'Barons De Rothschild'. He thought it only fitting to try their rare and exclusive French champagne and rosé. Santé!

David's Emerald Sakara Caribbean cruise was like ten different luxurious holidays in one, every day a new island, a new experience and a new culture. Best of all, the experiences were fully customisable to be whatever you want it to be, whether that's rest and relaxation, or exhilarating adventure. Exploring the charm, history, and unique international influences of the Caribbean on a sensational small yacht cruise was full of unforgettable moments.

The Best New Cruise Ships

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas will be the world's biggest new cruise ship.

Cruising is one of the fastest growing sectors of tourism, with passenger numbers projected to reach 37.2 million by 2025, according to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Cruise lines are responding to this growth by building new (and often, larger) vessels with all the bells and whistles, including technological advancements that are more environmentally friendly and create the capability to use alternative fuels.

U.S. News has compiled this roundup of new cruise ships that have just set sail or are scheduled to launch later in 2023 and in 2024, plus a preview of new ships coming in 2025 and beyond. The list includes everything from expedition and luxury yacht-style vessels to reimagined ships and megaships – plus the debut of a brand-new cruise line.

Oceania Allura will be the eighth ship in Oceania's fleet, the second vessel of the line's Allura class and the sister ship to Oceania Vista. The 1,200-passenger Allura will offer the same upscale amenities as Vista, as well as a new Chef's Studio and one of the highest space-to-guest and staff-to-guest ratios in the cruise industry. Allura is scheduled to debut in June 2025.

Star Princess: August 2025

Star Princess is scheduled to set sail in 2025 as the sister ship to Sun Princess. The 4,300-passenger, LNG-powered ship will offer the same features as Sun Princess, including the Dome, the Piazza and the line's Signature Collection Suites. The vessel will also have 29-plus restaurants and bars.

Star of the Seas: Summer 2025

Royal Caribbean plans to introduce Star of the Seas – the second Icon-class vessel and sister to Icon of the Seas – in summer 2025.

Disney Cruise Line: 2025

Disney purchased the former Global Dream from Genting's Dream Cruises in 2022, when it was still being built at the German shipyard MV Werften. Disney plans to base the ship in Singapore for at least five years, offering Disney vacations to the Southeast Asian market. When it launches in 2025, the vessel will be the line's seventh ship and is expected to carry 6,000 passengers. Another newly built, currently unnamed Disney ship is planned to debut in 2025, as well.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 2025 and beyond

The third Prima-class ship is expected to be approximately 10% larger than the first ship in the class, Norwegian Prima (143,535 gross tons). The following ships for the line are anticipated to be even larger, with the fifth and sixth Prima-class vessels (debuting in 2027 and 2028) weighing as much as 171,000 gross tons.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity's fifth Edge-class ship will be more eco-friendly, thanks to the addition of a new tri-fueled engine model and the capacity to store three different kinds of fuel, including methanol. The effort toward net-zero emissions and more sustainable cruising is a partnership between Royal Caribbean, the French shipyard Chantiers de L'Atlantique and the technology firm Wärtsilä. A debut date for this ship has not yet been announced.

A cruise line for every type of traveler: How to choose the right one for you

luxury cruises in the caribbean

  • Cruise lines have their own identities and areas of focus, and some lend themselves more to certain vacation types than others.
  • Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line are solid options for families.
  • Aurora Expeditions, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises offer trips with a spirit of exploration at their core.

No matter what kind of vacation you're planning , there's likely a cruise for you.

Whether you want to spend your trip kayaking and scuba diving or prefer to lounge on a sun deck sipping a cocktail, cruise lines have a wide range of offerings. But not every line or ship is right for every passenger.

Cruise brands have their own identities and areas of focus, and some lend themselves more to certain vacation types than others (amenities can also vary from ship to ship within the same line). Here's what to know:

Best cruise line for families

◾ Royal Caribbean International ships have an array of onboard offerings for kids and adults. For example, the line's most recent addition, Icon of the Seas, has been billed as the ultimate family vacation .

The vessel – the largest cruise ship in the world – has an entire neighborhood designed for young families, a large water park and activities ranging from a FlowRider surf simulator to Crown's Edge, where guests can walk more than 150 feet above the ocean. The line's Bahamas private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, offers plenty of thrills and places to chill , too.

◾ Norwegian Cruise Line also offers a range of activities like free-fall dry slides, go-kart tracks, and high-caliber stage shows. Disney Cruise Line draws on a huge catalog of stories to bring magic to life on the water, with character appearances, themed dining and special events like Marvel Day at Sea .

◾ Carnival Cruise Line and MSC Cruises also cater to families, and Princess Cruises and Holland America Line are solid options for multigenerational travelers. Mainstream cruise lines generally have kids clubs that are included in the fare, as well.

Best cruise line for adventure and expeditions

Adventure seekers may want to consider expedition ships and lines that offer sailings to less common destinations such as Antarctica .

◾ Aurora Expeditions offers a range of activity-centric itineraries, including Zodiac boat outings, kayaking, snowshoeing and more. Celebrity Cruises, meanwhile, has a vessel designed  especially for the Galapagos Islands .

◾ Operators like HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) , Lindblad Expeditions and Silversea Cruises also offer trips with a spirit of exploration at their core.

Best cruise line for letting loose

◾ Virgin Voyages offers adults-only sailings and a unique onboard atmosphere with its immersive Scarlet Night celebration and innovative performances . There is also no main dining room or buffet, with a focus on a variety of different food and drinks instead.

▶◾ Guests can also find parties on other lines, such as Carnival . But the length of the sailing and the time of year play a role in a cruise's vibe. Spring break cruises, for instance, may be rowdier than times when school is in session.

◾ Parties can take different forms, too. Cunard Line , for example, hosts formal gala nights .

Best cruise for rest and relaxation

Upscale cruise lines can lend themselves to a more relaxed and pampering experience. Guests are less likely to encounter rock-climbing walls or ice-skating rinks but will find amenities like pools and carefully curated dining. The following operators are all in that category:

◾ Silversea

◾ Regent Seven Seas Cruises

◾ Oceania Cruises

◾ The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

However, even on mainstream lines, guests can often get away from the bustle of the ship in onboard spas and adults-only areas. Luxe ship-within-a-ship concepts like Norwegian's The Haven or MSC's Yacht Club can also offer a more intimate, laid-back experience.

What should I pack for a cruise?: Here are 5 essential items to bring

Best lines for river cruising

River cruising tends to be small-scale and destination-focused.

▶◾ European river itineraries from lines like AmaWaterways, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Viking often stop at a mix of marquee and less-visited ports, so guests aren't fighting crowds the whole time.

▶◾ In the U.S., American Cruise Lines offers a diverse selection of itineraries, from sailings on the Columbia and Snake Rivers to round-trip cruises from Washington, D.C. Viking also has a ship purpose-built for the Mississippi River .
