Wales tourism performance: 2019

A comprehensive report that includes 2019 data from the main tourism surveys.

This is the latest release in the series: Wales tourism performance

The analysis in this report relates to January to December 2019 so pre-dates the current COVID-19 situation apart from the Tourism Barometer Survey.

Business performance

The Wales Tourism Barometer, undertaken in late April, was the third extraordinary wave of spring 2020 surveys to understand the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on the tourism industry. The previous wave of the survey, undertaken end of March 2020, had found that 97% of businesses were closed with 5% not having opened in 2020 at all.

The current survey reported that government furlough support had kept redundancies to a minimum to that point. The median estimated loss so far was 20% of the usual whole year revenue, ranging from no losses to 80%. Around a quarter (23%) of businesses did not expect to survive the following three months if lockdown continued, while three in ten (30%) did not know how long they could survive.

Overnight domestic GB trips

There were 10,698,000 overnight domestic GB trips to Wales during 2019, which was an increase of 6.8%, generating expenditure of £2,003 million.

Domestic GB tourism day visits

During 2019, there were 87,300,000 tourism day visits in Wales, which was a decrease of 8.8%. These visits generated expenditure of £3,447 million.

International Visitors/Travel

The number of international trips to Wales during 2019 rose by 3.6% to 1,023,000. Visitor spending was £515 million, which was an 18.8% increase on the same time last year. (Please note that ONS have adjusted the figures from the International Passenger Survey for the period 2009 to 2019).

There were just over 93 million trips taken abroad by UK residents in 2019 for all purposes, an increase of 2.8% compared to the previous year. Of these 58,700,000 were holidays, an increase of 2.3% compared to 2018.

Wales accommodation occupancy rates January – December average

Hotels: 66% Guesthouse/B&Bs: 37% Self-catering: 57% Hostels: 54%

Caravan Holiday Homes (May to October): 90%

Touring Caravans and Camping Parks (May to October): 42%

Rebuilding international visitor value

In February 2023, we launched our new multi-million pound international GREAT campaign to drive tourism to Britain. ‘See Things Differently’ positions Britain as a dynamic, diverse and welcoming destination, and focuses on countries where we are seeing strongest recovery – including the US, Canada, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, France, Germany and Spain.

In Europe and the GCC, the campaign plays on Britain’s affinity with tea. ‘Spill the tea’ taps into motivations for immediate travel based on our latest research. In Canada and the US we showcase Britain’s regional diversity, sharing a warm welcome in a range of regional accents, encouraging visitors to come and experience these destinations for themselves.

1 UK TOURISM STATISTICS 2019 TOURISM : Supporting Key Government PoliciesWith the UK poised to leave the European Union this year, there is a very real need for the Government to support sectors of the economy that are well positioned to provide the country with economic growth and create employment opportunities in the post-Brexit is one of the main sectors of the economy that is well placed to achieve this. The UK continues to be not just one of the most popular destinations in the world for visitors, but the World Economic Forum continues to rank the UK s TOURISM industry and infrastructure as one of the most competitive in the are therefore delighted that a TOURISM Sector Deal has been agreed under the Government s Industrial Strategy. This is only the 10th sector deal to be announced and highlights the Government s increasing recognition of the economic importance of the TOURISM industry and the opportunities and benefits that it can provide for the UK economy and in supporting Government very important examples are regional development and soft DevelopmentOne of the main challenges for Government is to boost growth outside London and the South East so as to address both the North/South divide and to support the economies of rural and seaside communities which have lagged behind urban areas in recovering from the Global Economic Crisis 10 years is one of the few industries that can directly support this objective quickly and without substantial investment in new infrastructure.

2 Despite the growth in city-breaks, domestic TOURISM in the UK is largely composed of people in urban areas travelling to rural and seaside destinations. The 25bn that these visitors spend on breaks and holidays represents the single largest non-governmental transfer of wealth to the economies of rural and seaside communities, creating 460,000 fulltime jobs in these PowerWith the UK leaving the EU, one of the Government s key objectives is to increase the UK s global influence. TOURISM is one of the key means of achieving this. Studies continue to show that enhancing and promoting a country s cultural and education offering in overseas markets is a key means of gaining greater global influence. There strong linkages between the UK s culture, education and TOURISM sectors. Not only is heritage and culture the primary reason that people travel to the UK, recent research by Universities UK shows that 88% of people who visit the UK for educational purposes plan to return to the country as tourists due to the strong affinity that they build with the country as a result of gaining a qualification.

3 While the Sector Deal is a significant step forward, it is very much a first step. There is much more that can be done to boost TOURISM growth post Brexit. This publication therefore provides the data to support a range of policies, from tax and visa reform to resolving structural issues in domestic TOURISM funding and delivery, that need to be addressed if we are to maximise TOURISM Nicholls Chair TOURISM AllianceValue of TOURISM to the UK Economy ( ) of UK GDP ONS, 2018 GVA of UK GVA (2017 est) ONS, TOURISM Satellite AccountsForecast Growth VisitBritain, 2019 SECTION 1: Volume and Value of the UK TOURISM Industry1: The Value of TourismThe UK TOURISM Industry s International Ranking The UK is the seventh largest international TOURISM destination ranked by visitor numbers.
