Follow the latest updates as King Charles III spends two days in Yorkshire, visiting four of the county's cities, including its newest.

That's it from the first day of the King's visit to Yorkshire.

Where will the King be on Wednesday?

The King will be joined by Camilla, the Queen Consort, when he visits York and Doncaster on Thursday.

Starting the day in York, Their Majesties will be welcomed with a special ceremony. The ceremony, which sees the monarch enter the city, was last carried out in 2012 when Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh entered the city to attend the Maundy Service at York Minster.

The King and Queen Consort will then attend a short service at York Minster. They will be welcomed by the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell. His Majesty will unveil a statute of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

From there, Their Majesties will travel to Yorkshire's newest city, Doncaster, to officially confer the city status granted by the King's late mother, Queen Elizabeth. The King will make a short speech. After the ceremony, Their Majesties will attend a reception in the Mansion House banquet hall.

Road closures in York

The King and Queen Consort will arrive in York late morning on Wednesday and depart early afternoon.

The following roads are affected: Micklegate Bar, Priory Lane, Trinity Lane, Barker Lane and St Martin Lane (9.30am-11.30am); routes around Tadcaster Road will be closed as the King and Queen Consort enter the city around 10.30am; Duncombe Place (9.30am-1pm); routes along the A19 will be affected by temporary road closures for around 10-15minutes as the King and Queen Consort leave York in the early afternoon.

Barriers have been installed at Micklegate Bar and Duncombe Place on Tuesday.

A kiss from the King

The King greeted one of the artists at an exhibition in Leeds with a kiss on both cheeks.

Fiona Compton was taking part in the Worlds Re-imagined Globes project, which explains Britain's role in slavery. The St Lucian artist and historian, showed him her Palace of the Peacock design which pays homage to enslaved women who used poison to resist slavery.

"She's my goddaughter," the King told his host.

Afterwards, she told reporters that the King was ready to discuss Britain's role in the slave trade.

Ms Compton, whose father was prime minister of St Lucia, said: "It's an ongoing conversation, he says he is ready to speak on it.

"He is ready to have these conversations and see what work can be done.<

"We are not talking about reparations, this is not solely something for the British monarchy [to talk about], this is for the British people to have the conversations.

"He agrees, this is British history, it should not be hidden."

His Majesty meets the mascot

While in Leeds, King Charles met Ted – a mascot of the Child Friendly Leeds initiative. The King unveiled a plaque marking 10 years of the initiative, which aims to promote the interests of children in the city.

After his visit to the library and art gallery, the King travelled to the head office of Leeds Building Society to meet representatives from the city's financial sector. His Majesty was due to unveil a plaque.

'My mum couldn't make it, so she told me to FaceTime her'

People gathered outside the Leeds Art Gallery said it was an honour to see the King in the city. But one woman told us she was sent by her mother to witness the event as she couldn't be there in person.

King departs

The King has left Leeds Art Gallery and is on his way to Leeds Building Society for his final engagement of the day.

A small crowd waved him on his way.

After leaving Bradford, the King's next engagement is at Leeds Central Library and Art Gallery. He is viewing The World Reimagined Globes, part of a national project to explore the history and impact of the Transatlantic slave trade.

He will also meet young achievers and will be introduced to  members of the Jamaican and West Indian community and will tour the Jamaica Society Leeds’ Rebellion to Romance exhibition.

King meets Queen of the ring

Among those to meet the King at a reception for young leaders in Bradford was Safiyyah Syeed. The 21-year-old has been nicknamed the 'Hijabi boxer' as one of a small number of Muslim fighters to wear a headscarf in the ring.

There was a huge turnout from staff as the King visited the Morrisons headquarters in Bradford earlier, where he unveiled a plaque commemorating the occasion.

His Majesty was given a rapturous welcome as he walked through the doors.

Vicki Smith, who is in the square for ITV News, said: "The red carpet is out and the gloomy weather hasn't put off the crowds who want to greet the King on his first visit to Yorkshire since becoming monarch.

"The Union flag bunting is out, along with hundreds of people who have come to the square early in the hope of a good view of Charles."

Brass and bhangra

The King will be given an authentic Bradford welcome when he arrives in the city, with a combination of brass and bhangra music. And it looks like the performers are buzzing at the prospect.

Some bus services will also be affected. More information can be found  here .

The council says "all are invited" to Centenary Square to welcome the King.

Which locations are on the King's itinerary?

The King begins his visit in Bradford this morning, before travelling to Leeds. He will fulfil two official engagements in each city. On Wednesday he will be joined by Camilla, the Queen Consort, as he visits York and Doncaster, where he will formally confer the city status granted by his late mother, Queen Elizabeth.

You can find details of the full itinerary here .

'Terrific honour'

In Bradford, Charles will visit the headquarters of supermarket Morrisons, before heading to Centenary Square, where he will be greeted by performances from the City of Bradford Brass Band and Punjabi Roots Academy.

It is the first time Charles will have been to the city since 2010.

Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Martin Love, said: "It is a terrific honour for Bradford to be among the first places that our new King will visit.

“We are looking forward to showing off our great city and introducing King Charles to some of the exceptional people from across our district.

“We are a young, diverse, vibrant and very welcoming place and I am certain that our Royal guest will be impressed and will have an enjoyable time.”

What's the weather like for the King's visit?

On Tuesday it will be fine with sunny spells at first, but there will be a mix of sunshine and blustery showers later. Showers may be heavy and thundery in places, perhaps with more prolonged rain developing. Maximum temperature: 13C.

King Charles to resume public duties after 'progress' in cancer treatment

LONDON — Britain’s King Charles III will resume public duties next week for the first time since his cancer diagnosis almost three months ago, Buckingham Palace announced Friday.

Charles “will shortly return to public-facing duties after a period of treatment and recuperation,” the palace said in a statement. The palace also revealed that the king’s medical team is “very encouraged” by the progress of his recovery but did not disclose any further details.

Joined by Queen Camilla, the king will visit an unnamed cancer center Tuesday and meet medical specialists and patients.

“This visit will be the first in a number of external engagements his majesty will undertake in the weeks ahead,” the palace said in a statement. He will also receive Japanese Emperor Naruhito for a state visit in June.

Ahead of the anniversary of Charles’ coronation May 6, he and the queen “remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year,” the statement added.

Image: Britain's King Charles III and Queen Camilla

Charles, 75, has been restricting himself to private duties since being diagnosed in February with an unspecified form of cancer . Doctors discovered the cancer after the king was hospitalized with an enlarged prostate, although the palace says that he does not have prostate cancer.

The king’s “treatment program will continue” and “doctors are  sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far,” the palace said Friday. “It is early to say” how much longer the king’s medical treatment will last, it said, but his medical team is "very encouraged by the progress made so far and remain positive about the king’s continued recovery.”

Though Charles is resuming duties, “it will not be a full summer program” and “will remain subject to doctors’ advice,” it said, adding that he “is greatly encouraged to be resuming some public-facing duties and very grateful to his medical team for their continued care and expertise.”

The king’s shocking diagnosis has heralded a fragile period for Britain’s royals.

Kate, the Princess of Wales, revealed last month that she, too, was being treated for cancer . Weeks of speculation over her health and whereabouts were only fueled when her team posted a photo that had been manipulated by the princess.

Kate, 42, is receiving what her team described as preventive chemotherapy . But both she and Charles have declined to specify either what type of cancer they have or details about their prognosis.

Their convalescence has left the royals somewhat shorthanded.

Shorn of their widely popular talisman, Queen Elizabeth II, after her death in 2022, the family is also down some would-be workhorses in Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, as well as Prince Andrew.

Kensington Palace said that Kate would return to the public eye after Easter, although that public holiday has come and gone with little sign of the princess.

Unlike Kate, who has not made an official public appearance since late December, Charles returned to the public eye at the Easter Sunday service in Windsor last month. “You’re very brave to stand out here in the cold,” he told members of the crowd as he greeted well-wishers on what was a chilly day.

Nevertheless, the king has been frustrated with the length of time his recovery is taking, according to his nephew Peter Phillips.

The saga has also highlighted a disconnect between the royals’ expectation of privacy and demands by the public for information and accountability from the institution they help fund.

The king has received some praise for revealing his cancer diagnosis at all, a level of candor that was markedly absent when it came to royals past. Charles’ grandfather King George VI died from a lung cancer that was kept from the public, press and perhaps even the monarch himself.

Charles said he wanted to go public about his treatment to encourage other men to get themselves checked. And the page for “enlarged prostate” on the website of Britain’s National Health Service received 11 times more traffic following his announcement, the National Health Service said.

However, some doctors and other medical commentators questioned the wisdom of keeping the specific type of cancer secret: How are people supposed to get themselves checked out for a disease that has myriad different forms and symptoms?

Charles’ swift diagnosis and treatment have also highlighted the dilapidated state of the NHS itself, a taxpayer-funded institution that’s historically been a source of pride for Brits, thanks to it being universally free at the point of access. Years of budget cuts mean the NHS is creaking, and waiting times and survival rates for cancers across the board have slipped in comparison with other countries.

LONDON — King Charles III is returning to royal duty.

In a statement sent to journalists Friday, Buckingham Palace said the king "will shortly return to public-facing duties after a period of treatment and recuperation following his recent cancer diagnosis."

It did not say Charles has been cured or whether he has finished his treatment. It has never disclosed what type or stage of cancer he was diagnosed with. He began unspecified treatment in early February.

To help mark what it called a "milestone" of his return, it said King Charles and Queen Camilla will make a visit next Tuesday to a cancer treatment center, where they'll meet with medical specialists and patients. "This visit will be the first in a number of external engagements His Majesty will undertake in the weeks ahead," the statement said.

The palace added that the king and queen will host the emperor and empress of Japan for a state visit to Buckingham Palace in June.

Princess Kate's cancer triggers public shock, sympathy — and shame on the tabloids

King Charles began cancer treatment just weeks before his daughter-in-law, the Princess of Wales, did the same. She began chemotherapy in late February, but her diagnosis wasn't made public until last month, after months of tabloid scrutiny about her whereabouts, and the publication of a family photo the princess says she altered. The palace has not disclosed the type or stage of her cancer either.

Charles' reign began with the September 2022 death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II , who was on the throne longer than any other British monarch. Charles' coronation happened eight months later, in May 2023.

Friday's statement from Buckingham Palace concludes: "As the first anniversary of The Coronation approaches, Their Majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year."

A timeline of King Charles' health struggles, from his cancer diagnosis to his return to public duties

  • Buckingham Palace confirmed King Charles III was diagnosed with cancer in January.
  • The announcement came after the British monarch sought treatment for an enlarged prostate.
  • After months of stepping back, the palace announced Charles was returning to public duties in April.

Insider Today

King Charles III's return to public duties is imminent, Buckingham Palace said in a statement shared with Business Insider on Friday.

The announcement comes months after the palace said the British monarch was diagnosed with cancer following a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate.

At the time, the palace said the king would be stepping back from public-facing duties to undergo a "schedule of regular treatments." With Charles out of the spotlight — and his daughter-in-law Kate Middleton also undergoing cancer treatment — other members of the royal inner circle, like Prince William, have faced pressure to step up .

But the palace's latest announcement signifies the king is ready to return to business as usual.

Here's a timeline of Charles' health struggles, from his diagnosis to his return to the public.

Buckingham Palace announced Charles was undergoing a "corrective procedure" on his prostate in January.

king's visit to doncaster

On January 17, the palace shared in a statement with Business Insider that Charles would be heading to the hospital to receive treatment for an enlarged prostate.

At the time, the palace described Charles' condition as "benign" and said the procedure he was having was "common with thousands of men each year."

When asked to provide further details about the condition and the procedure, the palace said it would not "for privacy reasons" and that more information about his upcoming engagements would be confirmed "in due course."

The announcement came the same day Kensington Palace announced Kate was in recovery after a "planned abdominal surgery."

Weeks later, Buckingham Palace confirmed Charles had been diagnosed with cancer.

king's visit to doncaster

On February 5, less than a month after the king's prostate procedure, the palace made yet another unprecedented announcement: Charles has cancer .

The palace didn't specify the form of cancer Charles was diagnosed with in the statement shared with BI. However, it said the monarch's medical team discovered the cancer while he was undergoing his prostate procedure.

It added that Charles had already begun a "schedule of regular treatments" and was under advice to step back from "public-facing duties," though he would also be continuing "State business and official paperwork as usual."

The statement concluded with the palace saying Charles was "grateful" for his medical team's "swift intervention" and was looking forward to returning to "full public duty as soon as possible."

"His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer," it added.

Charles kept working behind the scenes, praised the public for its well-wishes, and received support from his royal relatives — near and far.

king's visit to doncaster

In the months after Charles' diagnosis, the royal kept busy behind the scenes. Shortly after his condition was made public, a representative of Prince Harry told BI that he was scheduled to fly to the UK from California to see his father.

Weeks later, he was pictured meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and opening get-well-soon cards sent to the palace by members of the public.

In the interim, Charles also received treatment at the same clinic as Kate , whom he remained in the "closest contact with," a palace spokesperson told the BBC .

On March 28, Charles made his first public remarks post-diagnosis. Before Easter Sunday, in a pre-recorded audio clip shared at the Royal Maundy Service, he said it was "a great sadness" that he was unable to attend in person due to his condition and stressed the importance of extending "friendship" in times of need, Royal Central reported .

On Easter Sunday , Charles was spotted alongside Camilla attending a service at St George's Chapel in Windsor. The service was smaller to reduce Charles' contact with others while undergoing treatment.

On Friday, the palace said Charles would return to public-facing duties and is gearing up to host Japanese royals in June.

king's visit to doncaster

After a "period of treatment and recuperation" following his cancer diagnosis, the palace said on Friday that Charles is gearing up to return to public-facing duties "shortly."

The statement added that one of the first of several public events he's set to appear at in the next few weeks is a visit to a cancer treatment center with Queen Camilla on April 30.

"In addition, The King and Queen will host Their Majesties The Emperor and Empress of Japan for a State Visit in June," the statement read.

As Charles approaches the one-year mark following his coronation on May 6, 2023, the statement concluded by saying he and Camilla are "deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year."

Prince Harry to visit London solo, ‘no senior members of the royal family’ to attend UK Invictus Games event: report

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

No senior members of the royal family are expected to join Prince Harry to celebrate the  10th anniversary of the Invictus Games in the UK, according to a report.

The Duke of Sussex is gearing up to return to London on May 8 for the first time since his visit to see King Charles after his cancer diagnosis in February.

It’ll be Harry’s first trip to his home soil since learning of his sister-in-law Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnosis last month.

But unfortunately for Harry, 39, Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace officials have not confirmed any indication of a royal reunion being in the cards during his trip, the Telegraph reports .

The father of two is expected to give a reading at London’s St Paul’s Cathedral on May 8 to mark a decade since the inaugural Invictus Games took place in the capital.

Actor Damian Lewis, star of “Band of Brothers,” is set to recite the poem “ Invictus,” by William Ernest Henley, during the service.

Harry launched the  Invictus Games in 2014 as multisport Paralympic-styled games for wounded or injured servicemen and veterans.

It is thought that Harry will stay at a hotel during his upcoming trip —  something he opted to do  during his  blink-and-you-miss-it trip to London  in February.

The celebratory service will take place two days after Harry and his wife Meghan Markle’s son, Prince Archie, celebrates his fifth birthday. That same day, Charles will mark a year since his Coronation.

It’s also believed that the trip will be yet another solo venture for Harry.

It was reported that Harry was considering pulling the plug on the trip altogether over safety concerns.

In February, Harry and the “Suits” alum, 42,  were stripped of funded police protection  after they stepped back from being “working royals” and moved to the US in 2020.

This means that Harry and Markle will now have to pay out of their own pockets for their security when traveling across the pond.

Still, the couple are gearing up to visit Nigeria just days after Harry’s planned London trip.

The duo, who quit royal life in 2020 and hightailed it across the pond, were invited to Nigeria by the West African country’s chief of defense staff General Christopher Gwabin Musa — its highest ranking military official.

There, the couple will meet service members and their families, and will participate in traditional cultural practices, according to local media.

Early on in the war after Russian forces left the town , a number of dead bodies were found with their hands tied behind their backs - seemingly shot at close range. President Vladimir Putin's troops are accused of war crimes there, including executions and rapes.

During her visit, the duchess also met survivors of conflict-related sexual violence and survivors of torture, said the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

And she met children who have now been safely returned to Ukraine, after being forcibly separated from their families and taken by Russia.

She also met female volunteers who have helped their communities cope with the aftermath of attacks with mental healthcare activities for children.

In a speech during her visit, Sophie said: "It's true that women and girls pay the highest price in terms of human cost when it comes to the way that they are affected, the way that they can be used as weapons of war.

"Rape is used to demean, to degrade and to destroy, and we have to get better at trying to prevent that from happening."

She added: "I've been meeting with survivors of sexual violence and the conflict. I thank them for that honesty in telling me what happened to them. Their stories are sad... but I appreciate their time and their openness."

In the two years since the war began on 24 February 2022, at least 10,582 civilians have been killed and 19,875 injured in conflict-related violence in the country, according to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU).

Those killed include 5,017 men, 3,093 women, 311 boys and 248 girls.

The King, when he was Prince of Wales, visited Ukraine in 1996. As monarch, he sent a message of support to the people of Ukraine on the second anniversary of the war.

He wrote: "Despite the tremendous hardship and pain inflicted upon them, Ukrainians continue to show the heroism with which the world associates them so closely. Theirs is true valour, in the face of indescribable aggression."

In March 2023, Prince William visited Poland to thank British and Polish troops involved in providing support to Ukraine, before meeting refugees who have fled the conflict with Russia to hear of their experiences.
