Ready to hit the road? Here’s the best Midwest road trips

Black hills, south dakota (a classic).

Recommended trip: 7-10 days

The Black Hills in South Dakota is one of the best places for a road trip in the Midwest.  There is so much to see and do, you could easily spend months here, but for a shorter trip, 7-10 days would be great.

Rapid City is probably the best place to fly in and out of for a Black Hills trip. I would start with a couple of days in Badlands National Park .  Spend the night in Wall, visit Wall Drug and the Badlands from here, then head over to Wind Cave National Park.

Spend a night or 2 in Hot Springs to easily access the park where you can do some hiking, look for bison, and do a cave tour. Make a stop at the Mammoth site while you’re here, too.

Finally, head to Keystone for a few days. This is the perfect base for exploring the Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park area. 

Some of the must-do activities here are visiting Mount Rushmore (of course), driving Iron Mountain Road , driving the Needles Highway, driving the Custer Wildlife Loop Road, hiking Cathedral Spires Trail, and relaxing at Sylvan Lake. If you want a little side trip, you can easily visit Devils Tower in Wyoming, too.

Chicago to St. Louis road trip

Recommended trip: 4-6 days

Driving from Chicago, Illinois to St. Louis, Missouri should be on any midwest road trip. This journey is part of Route 66, one of the original highways in the United States. Route 66 was the primary route for people wishing to move west. Opt to spend one day driving this four and a half-hour drive, or break it up and spend the night in Springfield, Illinois.  

For this journey, start in Chicago. Make sure to spend at least 3 days in Chicago. Stay in the centrally located Downtown/River North area. Do not miss the Art Institute of Chicago and the Field Museum.

Grab some pictures at “The Bean” in Millenium Park. Daredevils can opt for “The Edge” experience at the Skydeck or the Tilt Experience at the John Hancock Building. 

In the morning depart Chicago to drive south towards Springfield, the capital of Illinois . Stop by the capitol building and take a free tour of the building.

Visit Abraham Lincoln’s grave at Oak Ridge Cemetery and then visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Grab a custard at Krekel’s before heading onward to St. Louis, Missouri. 

Plan to spend at least 2 days in St. Louis to explore the main sites. Plan to stay in the Downtown area. Ride to the top of the St. Louis Arch at Gateway Arch National Park.

Take a peek into history at the Old Courthouse, where the Dread Scott decision was made. Make sure to eat some delicious BBQ before departing St. Louis.

Indianapolis, IN to Boyne City, MI

Recommended trip: 2-3 days

Ready for a fantastic Midwest road trip? Regardless of the time of year, driving from Indianapolis, Indiana to Boyne City, MI is a perfect way to enjoy a long weekend.

Day one, you’ll want to get up early and head to Lansing, MI. It’s about 3.5 hours from Indy, so if you time it right, be sure to stop for lunch at Soup Spoon Cafe – a flight of soup is a fun way to start your mini-vacation. Next, if you have younger kids, head over to the Impression 5 Science Center – they’ll love the full sensory experiences. 

After the museum, finish your drive north and check-in at Boyne Mountain for the night. Enjoy a full day of exploring Boyne Mountain and nearby Boyne City the next day. If it’s winter, hit the slopes for a little skiing or even tubing.

If it’s summertime, enjoy hiking, ziplining, or swimming. Downtown Boyne City is situated right on Lake Charlevoix and the town is full of delicious restaurants such as Cafe Sante and Red Mesa as well as unique local boutiques.

Leave Boyne Mountain, and head over to Petoskey for your final day. Start it off right with amazing bagels and donuts at Johann’s Bakery and then hurry over to the main Kilwins location for a factory tour. Kilwin’s offers free tours Monday – Friday every half-hour from 10 – 4:30, and each one ends with a decadent chocolate treat.

After the tour, spend a little time poking around downtown Petoskey for lunch and to pick up a few Michigan souvenirs before heading back to Indianapolis.

Central Iowa road trip

We highly recommend taking a road trip through Central Iowa. You’ll pass through  Des Moines , Iowa’s capital and other smaller towns that have some fun and interesting attractions.

Heading east along I-80, your first stop should be the town of Winterset. It’s famous for having the  actual  bridges of Madison County. Six of the original 19 covered bridges in Madison County have been preserved just outside of town. Winterset is also the birthplace of John Wayne. There is a museum dedicated to him, with lots of personal and movie memorabilia.

Continuing east, you reach Des Moines. We love this artsy city! It’s easy to find street art there and downtown has a 4.4-acre sculpture park that is free to the public. There’s also a really lovely botanical garden in Des Moines.

Of course, visiting the Capitol Building is a must. You can do a free self-guided tour and marvel at the building’s incredible architecture.

The next stop on your road trip should be the town of Grinnell. Home to Grinnell College, they have a small but impressive art museum on campus.

Grinnell is also the home of one of eight “jewel-box” banks built by legendary architect Louis Sullivan. He is considered the father of modern American architecture and mentored Frank Lloyd Wright. The bank is beautiful, with large stained-glass windows and pink Tennessee marble floors.

St. louis to kansas city.

Recommended trip: 3-5 days

While many people think of Missouri as a fly-over state, it’s full of not-to-be-missed gems, from St. Louis to Kansas City. So why not see some of them in one fell swoop with a 5-day road trip?

Start in St. Louis, a city bursting with historic architecture and a thriving food and cocktail scene. Spend 2 days here, exploring the City Museum, an adult playground/art installation of interactive salvaged architectural objects. Visit Forest Park, one of the country’s largest urban parks and its world-class museums, all boasting free admission. And, of course, the Missouri Botanical Gardens, consistently ranked one of the best in the nation.

At night, eat your way through the exploding culinary landscape, with one of the many restaurants helmed by James Beard nominated chefs, like Vicia or Lona’s Lil’ Eats.

Once you’ve gotten your fill, drive west to Hermann, a tiny town that has several wineries, breweries, and distilleries nestled in its idyllic grassy hills. For just $20, the Hermann Trolley will shuttle you between these establishments all day, so you can responsibly imbibe in as many craft beverages as you please.

After a day here, finish your trip with 2 days in Kansas City, famous for its jazz scene. To get a taste of it yourself, head to the American Jazz Museum during the day and the Green Lady Lounge at night to see some of the world’s best musicians in action. By the end of the trip, you’ll be ecstatic to have discovered some of the Show Me State’s abundant treasures!

Milwaukee to Wisconsin Dells

One of the best Midwest road trips you can take is exploring the highlights of Wisconsin. The ideal road trip itinerary takes you from Milwaukee to Green Bay and ends in Wisconsin Dells.

Start your road trip in Milwaukee , but you can’t leave without spending at least 2 days in this vibrant city. As a matter of fact, people flood from all over the United States to visit Milwaukee for its food, attractions and history.

Must do’s are the Harley Davidson Museum and the historic Third Ward.  Stay in the iconic Pfister Hotel in downtown.

From here you finally head out to the beautiful North of Wisconsin. Along the Michigan river you’ll cross scenic towns such as Port Washington. When you arrive in Green Bay, get ready to explore this vibrant town located in Door County.

Richmond, IN to Butler County, OH

If you’re looking for a cool trip, head to Indiana and Ohio! Starting off in Richmond, Indiana, visit the Wayne County Historical Museum and the Levi Coffin House. Be sure to hear their amazing story of the Underground Railroad!

Stay at the Starr Loft in Richmond before heading to Ohio. On your way to Ohio’s Lake Erie Islands, take a diversion into Bremen at the Bicycle Museum of America. Then onto the Marblehead Lighthouse in Marblehead, Ohio where this historic lighthouse guided sailors safely since 1822.

That night stay at Port Clinton’s Fairfield Inn & Suites. The next morning, head over to Ohio’s Lake Erie Islands. Take Miller Boat Line’s Ferry to Put-in-Bay where you can ferry your car over to the island.

Visit Perry’s Peace Memorial which honors the War of 1812. Check out the view up the 352-foot tower! The memorial honors those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie. The next day, on Kellys Island, take a tour in a golf cart to check out natural phenomenons like the Glacial Grooves.

Be sure to hang out for an afternoon in Downtown Sandusky, Ohio . Take a Segway tour, visit Cedar Point Amusement Park, visit the Merry-Go-Round Museum or go parasailing.

Last stop on this road trip is Butler County, Ohio! Enjoy the Donut Trail and tour outdoor art at the Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park.

Loess Hills Scenic Byway (Missouri to Iowa)

The Loess Hills Scenic Byway takes its travelers through the most extensive loess (essentially, ancient wind-blown silt deposits) outside a remote region of China! While the byway officially starts at the Iowa state border, the hills themselves run north-south a bit east of the Missouri River, from St. Joseph, Missouri to the Sioux City, Iowa area, passing near Omaha, Nebraska in the middle of the journey.

Each of these cities are destinations in their own right, and combined, they make a road trip full of scenic views and ample entertaining places to stop along the way.  

In St. Joe, Missouri, local museums provide fascinating looks at the history of the Pony Express, the art of Thomas Hart Benton (often depicting loess hills!) and the life of the nefarious Jesse James. Near Mound City, Missouri, visit the Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge to see waterfowl and bald eagles.

The Hitchcock Nature Center near Omaha and the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center in Sioux City provide more information about the unique geology, flora, and fauna of the Loess Hills along with opportunities for hiking, boating, and more!

Minneapolis to omaha.

Recommended trip: 4-5 days

Get a nice mix of cities and wide open spaces on a Midwest road trip from Minneapolis to Omaha. Starting in Minneapolis, you’ll want to spend 1-2 days visiting the lakes, restaurants and of course, checking out the Mall of America .

Visit the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden in downtown and grab an ice cream cone at Izzy’s Ice Cream . The largest mall in North America (Mall of America) is a whole lot more than shopping, too. With an indoor amusement park, it’s the perfect activity for any weather.

Then hit the road! Next stop: Northwestern Iowa. Stop in Estherville, Iowa for a rustic winery , experience an 80-year old swinging bridge or to visit the site of the largest known meteorite seen crashing into North America.

You could stay in Esterville for the night, or head about half an hour west to Lake Okoboji. In Okoboji, Iowa you’ll find shopping, dining and a bunch of water activities , of course! Try the Arnold’s Park Amusement Park or live music after a day on the water.

Next on this Midwest road trip is Sioux City, Iowa. Grab lunch or dinner at the Fourth Street Historic District in downtown Sioux City , catch a show at the Orpheum Theatre or visit Palmer’s Old Tyme Candy Shoppe for a sweet treat before leaving town.

Omaha, Nebraska is the final destination on this Midwest road trip itinerary. You’ll want to spend 1-2 days visiting this fun city. Omaha is known as the silicone prarie, a tech hub that’s family-friendly, yet trendy enough to support a vibrant art scene and plenty of outdoor space.

One of the best things to do in Omaha is to visit the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium , It’s the largest tourist attraction in the state, and regularly competes with the San Diego Zoo as the #1 zoo in the country! It really is that fantastic!

Check out North America’s largest indoor rain forest, feed the giraffes, walk under sharks in the aquarium and watch the animals in the world’s largest indoor desert dome. Tip: be sure to buy your tickets in advance online and arrive early to avoid the crowds as best as you can.

Get a good tour of the city while taking fun photos at the most Instagrammable places in Omaha . Spend some time wandering the Lauritzen Gardens or check out the Fun-Plex Waterpark.

For some mystery check out the Joslyn Castle , and for some history visit the Lewis and Clark Landing. The Old Market in downtown is the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat after a long day touring the city.

Duluth to Grand Marais, Minnesota

Recommended trip: 1-2 days

A Minnesota road trip on Highway 61 between Duluth and Grand Marais will offer you amazing views of Lake Superior, numerous options for a delicious bite to eat, and some can’t miss attractions .

As you leave Duluth, choose the 24-mile scenic route to Two Harbors, and take in the view of Lake Superior along the way. In Two Harbors you can walk along the breakwater to the lighthouse, and watch the ore ships coming and going. Enjoy a local brew at Castle Danger Brewery after doing some shopping in Agate Bay.

Just north of Two Harbors is Betty’s Pies and you don’t want to miss stopping here ! This is a full service restaurant, but they also have a walk up counter where you can order their famous pie. The pie flavors change every day, but you definitely want to try the Great Lakes Fruit Pie . This pie is filled with blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, apples, and rhubarb and it is one of a kind.

It is 11 miles to the next stop, in Castle Danger, but get your camera ready because you’ll be driving through 2 large tunnels, and the exits of both perfectly frame Lake Superior. 

Castle Danger is home to Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse State Parks. You can learn a little history of the area while touring the lighthouse and take a hike down the hillside to dip your toes in the cool Lake Superior water.

Gooseberry Falls State Park has 5 waterfalls that you can hike to, and a very nice visitor center to buy some souvenirs at.

Along the remaining 72 miles to Grand Marais, take the time to stop at a beach or two to hunt for agates. The beaches along the North Shore are loaded with agates and it’s fun to find a few to bring home.  

The city of Grand Marais has a main street full of local shops that ends on the shore of Lake Superior.  The beach is a popular spot to watch the water, and to eat a delicious donut from World’s Best Donuts or maybe you’ll want a slice of thin crust pizza from Sven and Ole’s.  

Grand Marais is also the start of the Gunflint Trail. This is a 57-mile paved roadway that ends in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area near the border of Ontario.

This 110 mile road trip between Duluth and Grand Marais can be made in one day, but why not take your time and really discover the beauty of Lake Superior and the North Shore.

I-70 Kansas road trip: Abilene to Kansas City

Recommended trip: 2-4 days

Enjoy a wealth of historic, cultural, and recreational activities along Interstate 70 in northern Kansas. Start in Abilene, Kansas with visiting the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood Home. Head over to pet Ginger, the greeter at the Greyhound Hall of Fame. Enjoy award-winning fried chicken at the Brookville Hotel.

Next stop along I-70 in Kansas is Junction City, home to Milford Lake and the Fishing Capital of Kansas. Tour Fort Riley’s museums, but prepare for security. Eat Munson-raised, dry-aged beef at Munson’s Prime restaurant, a local favorite. A perfect spot to call it a night is by the lake at Acorns Resort.

Then you’ll hit Manhattan, Kansas. For high adventure, fly zip lines at Wildwood Adventure Park. Afterwards, relax and eat and drink at Liquid Art Winery & Estate!

Slide into Topeka, Kansas where you can dive into history and visit the state capitol and the national historic site where the Supreme Court reversed segregation in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka . A great way to end the day is with elegance at the Cyrus Hotel.

As you head east on I-70, you’ll get to Lecompton, Kansas. Learn more about where slavery began to die at Constitution Hall State Historic Site and the Territorial Capitol. Then lighten things back up by grabbing a slice of gourmet pie at Aunt Netter’s Cafe. Delicious!

Next up is Lawrence, Kansas and downtown is the place to be! Experience downtown Lawrence during the day or night. See basketball’s original rules at The Cradle of Basketball. And if you’re looking for a brewery, Free State Brewing Co. is Kansas’ first post-prohibition brewery. Stay at in the heart of Lawrence at The Oread.

The final stop on this Northern Kansas road trip before arriving at Kansas City is Leavenworth, Kansas. Visit Fort Leavenworth, or ride antique carousels at C.W. Parker Carousel Museum. A must-try in Leavenworth is the steak house tenderloin at Metropolitan Steakhouse.

Wrapping up the I-70 Kansas road trip is of course, Kansas City! Enjoy the major leagues: sporting Kansas City at Children’s Mercy Park and NASCAR at Kansas Speedway. Eat top-notch barbecue at SLAP’s BBQ. After a great road trip in Kansas, stay in the Chateau Avalon.

Midwest road trip: Missouri Route 66

While most people think of a  Route 66  Road Trip as starting in Chicago and ending in Santa Monica, you don’t need to take two weeks and traverse half the country to get in a taste of the Mother Road. Instead, you can pick a portion and explore it in-depth.

Missouri has a great stretch of Route 66 right here in the Midwest. It starts in the northeast crossing over from Illinois into St. Louis and ends at the Oklahoma border after passing through Joplin.

Obviously the most iconic site on Missouri’s portion of Route 66 is the Gateway Arch, which practically welcomes you onto the road. Make sure to tour Meramec Caverns , see the one-room jail in Cuba, and explore the interesting history of Carthage. 

Take advantage of the fun roadside kitsch of the route and get out at as many stops as you can. A real Route 66 road trip means you need to spend a few nights in the state’s retro motels and enjoy some diners and dive bars.

Driftless Area Scenic Byway (Iowa)

Yellow River State Forest was first acquired as a state forest in 1935, the Yellow River State Forest has grown to encompass nearly 9,000 acres of natural beauty.

Great River Road , where you can enjoy 36.2 miles of the Great River Road in Allamakee County. You will discover the best of the Great River Road right here!

Driftless Area Education & Visitor Center , where you’ll see live animals, interpretative displays, 2 viewing decks of the Mississippi River, and a great group educational experience.  Located just south of Lansing.

Triple Nickel Byway (Ohio)

Winding through the southern part of Ohio is the  Triple Nickel  which encompasses parts of State Route 555. If you’ve never been on this scenic, twisting by-way through the hills of Ohio, you need to put it on your bucket list! This is a perfect day trip that takes you from the picturesque town of Zanesville to the history-rich city of Marrietta.  

The Triple Nickel is one of the more challenging roads in Ohio, but you can take in some of the amazing historical sites when you’re in the area. While touring through Morgan County you can see the Big Muskie bucket part of the world’s largest earth-moving machine in Miner’s Memorial Park and Barkhurst Mill Covered Bridge.  

No trip on the Triple Nickel is complete without stopping to eat at the Triple Nickel Diner in Chesterhill. Pro-tip: Make sure to check their website for the hours of operation because they vary with the seasons.  

If you’re looking for a great place to stay while on the route, take a small detour to the  Stockport Mill Inn located in Stockport, Ohio . You’ll be treated to stunning views of the Muskingum River and the operating locks. Dotty, the owner, will treat you like family and feed you amazing comfort foods only found at the Inn.

Madison to Spring Green, Wisconsin

One of the most exciting small cities in the Midwest is  Madison, Wisconsin . It has a wonderful dining scene and miles of shoreline and bike trails.

A culmination of a college-town and a bustling city, Madison is also home one of America’s most beloved architects: Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright used Madison and its neighborhoods as a canvas, where visitors can see his many designs come to life. Although several of Madison’s Wright-designed houses are private residences, designs like the First Unitarian Meeting Houses and Monona Terrace are must-see spots for any architectural buffs! Both buildings are just a short 10-minute drive away.

If you want to see more of the city’s art scene , visit either the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art or the Chazen Museum of Art! Both museums boast both Wisconsin-based artists, as well as international artists too. Furthermore, admission is free for adults, making this the perfect stop for anyone that loves to travel on a budget. 

While you’re in Madison we also highly recommend grabbing tacos from Matthew Danky and his exciting outpost El Grito Tacqueria.  

From Madison, drive about 40 minutes to the quaint town of New Glarus , Wisconsin. The main attraction here is New Glarus Brewing, one of the most highly regarded breweries by beer snobs across the country so make sure to spend a few hours there. 

New Glarus also has rich Swiss heritage. Explore and find an authentic Swiss bakery or locally made raclette and cheese fondue.

Our last stop is very enjoyable Spring Green, an hour away down winding country roads.  Frank Lloyd Wright spent the better part of his life living and working in Spring Green and maintained a school at Taliesin. Wright’s students designed many unique buildings in and around Spring Green.

Where in Kansas and Ohio? I've spent time in Kansas City and St. Louis which may be along the way, but aren't necessarily off the beaten path. Perhaps a bit more southern, I've heard the Mark Twain National Forest and Shawnee National Forest are both gorgeous! Otherwise I've recently spent time in Sandusky Ohio, Put-in-Bay Ohio and the Lake Erie area. I'm sorry, I'm not sure I have a whole lot of suggestions for that specific route since I haven't personally done it. Best of luck on your road trip!

You missed a Gem of the Midwest. Part of the Driftless region on NE Iowa you need to check out the town of Decorah and the area around it. River bluffs, water falls, bike trails, 3 award winning breweries, big Scandinavian culture and museum.

Clocking in at just under five hours from Indy, Put-in-Bay is a tropical getaway in the middle of Lake Erie just off the shore of northern Ohio. You’ll take a ferry to the island and find live music, nightlife, great shopping and food, as well as plenty of things to keep you busy! Rent a golf cart to tour the island in style! If the party atmosphere isn’t your style, take the ferry over to nearby Kelleys Island for a more peaceful, secluded atmosphere.

2. Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Is there anything better than looking up and seeing the Smoky Mountains in the skyline while you play mini golf, ride an alpine coaster, or walk into a gigantic replica of the Titanic? Pigeon Forge is a family friendly destination with lots of fun attractions, entertainment, and one of the best theme parks in the country – Dollywood! Best of all – you’re a hop, skip, or a jump away from the nation’s most visited National Park. If you’ve never seen it in person – it’s a life changing experience. Nothing like it! And admission to the park is absolutely free. Pigeon Forge is also home to one of the neatest crime museums I’ve ever seen – Alcatraz East Crime Museum is definitely worth a visit!

3. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee may be known worldwide for cheese and beer but there’s so much more!  You can keep busy for several days exploring places like the  Harley-Davidson Museum , the  Milwaukee Public Market , and watching the famous wings open on the  Milwaukee Art Museum .  If you love a good festival – Milwaukee has lots and lots of them including the world’s largest music festival each summer.  The city has an endless amount of great food for all tastes, and don’t forget the beautiful views of Lake Michigan.  Take the time to explore some of the historic downtown neighborhoods and don’t leave without buying a bag of fresh cheese curds for your road trip home.

4. Dayton, Ohio

Dayton is best known as the place that gave birth to modern aviation. The Wright Brothers called Dayton home and the city is full of historic places that will give you a front row seat to the history of the “flying machine” which is how the first airplane was trademarked. One of the original Wright Brothers bicycle shops is still in tact, and you can see an original Wright Flyer at the Carillon Historical Park. Take a ride over to Huffman Prairie Field where the brothers tested out there invention or tour the mansion where they lived. Best of all – Dayton is home to the Museum of The United States Air Force – an unbelievable airplane museum that consists of four different hangars and impossible to see in a single day. See rare military aircraft and even go on board a retired Air Force One plane. And it’s free!

5. Parke County, Indiana

Parke County, Indiana is best known as the “covered bridge capitol of the world”! Located less than than two hours from downtown Indy, you’ll find a great relaxing destination with some much needed peace and quiet. You can grab an old fashioned map (remember those?) at the local visitors center and then set out to find as many of the historic covered bridges as you can, making it a perfect romantic getaway. Consider booking a room or campsite at Turkey Run State Park, Indiana’s most popular state park, for your home base. They offer brand new, minimalist cabins as well. The park has plenty of great hiking trails for all skill levels.

6. Adventures On The Gorge – Lansing, West Virginia

The New River Gorge Bridge is one of the most impressive architectural feats in American history. One of the many daring activities offered through  Adventures On The Gorge  in Lansing, West Virginia is called “Bridge Walk”. You can literally walk along the catwalk beneath the third highest bridge in the U.S. It’s not for everyone, but an unforgettable experience for thrill seekers! During your stay at the adventure resort, you can zip line, climb trees, enjoy incredible sunsets, and of course – some of the best whitewater rafting in the world.

7. St. Louis, Missouri

The Gateway to the West is more than just the country’s tallest national monument. (630 feet high, in case you were wondering – and yes, you can take a tram all the way up to the top.) Saint Louis is home to Forest Park, which is bigger than New York’s Central Park, and full of free attractions like the Saint Louis Science Center, Missouri History Museum, Saint Louis Art Museum and yes – the award winning Saint Louis Zoo, which is only one of two major zoos in the America with free admission. Enjoy a great meal on “The Hill” – the last still thriving Italian neighborhood in America and take your kids to City Museum – one of the most bizarre, yet incredible places in the midwest. Tour Budweiser, take a stroll at the Missouri Botanical Garden, or try some St. Louis style thin crust pizza or toasted ravioli! Yum!

8. Springfield, Illinois

This is a great road trip idea for history lovers – Abe Lincoln’s hometown of Springfield, Illinois! You can spend an entire weekend exploring where Lincoln served in the Illinois legislature, worked as a self-taught lawyer, and lived with his family. You can tour the only home he ever owned which is beautifully preserved along with the neighborhood where he lived. Lincoln is also buried in the local cemetery beneath a massive tomb. You can also enjoy some Route 66 history and tour the state’s capitol building as well as the Governor’s mansion.

9. Holland, Michigan

If you thought Holland was in Europe – you are correct!  But, America’s Holland is located in Michigan and it’s a cool town worth exploring.  Pick up a pair of wooden shoes and walk along the streets of downtown for great shopping and lots of dining options.  (Fun fact:  the streets of downtown Holland are heated so they don’t have to plow snow in the winter. Genius!)  Holland is also home to the only authentic Dutch wind mill that is still operational in the U.S.  If tulips are your thing – visit during the annual  festival  each spring.  The Holland Bowl Mill is also very cool – ask them for a quick tour of the production and find a one of a kind wooden bowl to take home!

Bill’s Advice:  I eat a lot of pizza when I’m on the road and Holland has one of the best pizza places I’ve ever been to.  It’s called  Fricano’s Pizza  and sometimes, I have dreams about it.

10. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Famous for having more bridges than any other U.S. city, Pittsburgh is a terrific destination for a weekend or extended getaway. You can take in a baseball game with beautiful views of the Sixth Street Bridge, take a ride on the historic Duquesne Incline, or visit the city’s quirky bicycle museum. If you grew up watching Mr. Rogers, Pittsburgh was his home town and you can spend a day exploring all things Mr. Rogers – including seeing the very sets from the iconic television show and his puppets!

11. Owensboro, Kentucky

Just south of Evansville is the bluegrass music capitol of the world – Owensboro, Kentucky. If you like the idea of watching local bands in a barn, taste testing bourbon, eating good barbecue, or catching catfish – you’ll love this place. Owensboro is also home to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and music legend Bill Monroe. You can even tour his childhood home .

12. Cincinnati, Ohio

There’s a lot to see and do in Cincinnati! One of my favorite museums – The American Sign Museum is alone worth the road trip. Downtown you’ll find some fun places to eat, catch a game at Great American Ballpark, or take a stroll along the Ohio river on the beautiful hiking and biking trails. If you take a short drive (or walk) across the bridge downtown you’ll wind up in Covinginton, Kentucky. This historic town that was once notorious for gangsters is now a lovely area with dining and shopping, plus great views looking back at the Cincinnati skyline. Speaking of “skyline” – Cincy’s famous chili is available all over town. (I’m not personally a fan – but a lot of people like it!)

13. Madison, Wisconsin

The state capital of Wisconsin is constantly ranked as one of the best places to live in the U.S.  Madison is also a fun college town with lots of things to do – though its best to visit in the spring and summer months if you hate cold weather.  My favorite thing to do in Madison is the Dane County Farmer’s Market that wraps around the entire Capitol building. Patrons all walk in one direction to shop for fresh produce and local goods.  Of course, State Street is full of action – all seven blocks between downtown and the University of Wisconsin campus. You can find food (140 restaurants!) unique stores, and plenty of entertainment day or night.

Bill’s Advice:  Tour the beautiful Wisconsin State Capitol, and enjoy some time relaxing near the water.  (You can ice skate in the winter months)  For a quirky stop – a short drive to Middleton will get you to the  National Mustard Museum !

14. Nashville, Tennessee

Music City USA has seen a major boom in recent years. Along with the treasures that have always made Nashville great, there are brand new attractions and businesses making it one of the hottest cities in the south.  For country music fans – the Hall of Fame is a great bet, along with a tour of the  Ryman Auditorium  and  Grand Ole Opry.   These days, Broadway is a happening street akin to Times Square in New York City.  Bars, live music, and plenty of good people watching.  Check out an exact replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park, and be sure to try some authentic Nashville Hot Chicken while you’re in town!

Bill’s Advice:  Nashville is great for a weekend but definitely plenty to do for an extended visit or vacation.  It’s also one of the most popular cities on the list – which means it’s going to be busy.  Brace yourself for crazy traffic, higher than average prices to park your car downtown, and lots of people.  To save a bit of money, consider staying in one of the many communities that surround Nashville or out near the airport.  If you’re a country music fan – the George Jones Museum is a must! If not, you can still check out the rooftop bar on the fourth floor with great views of the river.

15. Door County, Wisconsin

One of the prettiest destinations in all of the midwest is Door County, Wisconsin. With its welcoming small communities, abundance of outdoor adventure, and of course – cherries galore – it makes for a perfect road trip. Be sure to check out the goats walking atop the roof of Al Johnson’s Swedish restaurant in Sister Bay, take a sunset cruise from Fish Creek to capture some beautiful photos, and of course if your timing is right – pick some fresh cherries in one of the many orchards in the area.

Bill’s Advice: Be sure to pop into the Wisconsin Visitors Center and pick up a cheese map! You’ll find every location for fresh cheese and cheese curds all of the state. It’s fantastic!

16. Louisville, Kentucky

Of course most people know Louisville as the place where the famous Louisville Slugger baseball bats are made, but that’s just the start!  Downtown Louisville offers a wide variety of attractions from the Muhammad Ali Center to Churchill Downs where the Kentucky Derby takes place.  For an adventure – try out the world’s only underground zip line at Louisville Mega Cavern or a cruise on the historic Belle of Louisville.  Lots of great restaurants for all tastes and cool places to stay including 21c and The Galt House Hotel.

Bill’s Advice:  Louisville is a great weekend trip!  If you love Kentucky Fried Chicken, pay your respects to Col. Sanders himself.  His grave site is a short drive from downtown.  Just follow the yellow line at Cave Hill Cemetery and you’ll find it.  Don’t be surprised if you see a bucket of chicken sitting on the tombstone.  No, seriously.

17. Quad Cities, Illinois/Iowa

Talk about getting your bang for the buck – how often do you get four destinations packed into a single stop?  The Quad Cities is made up of five towns that share the Illinois-Iowa border.  (Yes, “quad” makes no sense as there are five and not four – but believe me, they know.)  It’s best known as the world headquarters for John Deere, and visitors can tour multiple historical spots that tell the story of the famous company.  Take a quick side trip up to LeClaire on the Iowa side to see where the show American Pickers began.

Bill’s Advice:  Try some Whitey’s Ice Cream while you’re in the region because it’s amazing!  It is seriously so good that it’s the first thing I want to do when I pass through the region.  I’ve interviewed the family that owns it – and they’re very nice!

18. Fort Wayne, Indiana

Fort Wayne is probably not a spot that’s been on your radar but Indiana’s second largest city has a lot going on.  Its minor league baseball stadium is award winning and its local library is known as the best genealogy research center in the country.  The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is one of the best designed kid-friendly zoos around and a brand new, beautiful  riverfront project  has injected new energy into the town.  You’ll also find lots of opportunity for outdoor recreation.

Bill’s Advice:  For something unique, visit the headquarters for Sweetwater – one of the largest music and instrument stores in the world.  Vera Bradley is also headquartered in Fort Wayne and has events during the year.

19. Indiana Dunes National Park

So let’s be honest, Indiana isn’t exactly a great place to live if you crave frequent road trips to the ocean. Florida? California? Better save some money for gas. However, it’s an easy trip to some of the beaches along beautiful Lake Michigan. Often underrated are the northern beaches of the midwest which are often less crowded, cleaner, and have sunsets that are just as beautiful. You can sit back and relax, rent a paddle board or kayak and watch your kids burn off energy running up and down the impressive sand dunes.

20. Columbus, Ohio

Columbus, known to locals as “C-Bus” is the capitol city of Ohio. It’s been going through major growth over the last decade and is a destination worthy of a road trip. The sprawling downtown is easily accessible with the new CBUS Circulator, free to use for visitors. Check out the Short North Arts District for galleries, dining, and locally owned shopping. Local attractions include the Franklin Conservatory and Botanical Garden, the COSI Science Museum, Columbus Art Museum, and the Columbus Zoo which is one of the best in the country. Be sure to take a free tour of the Ohio state capitol building as well!

The Perfect Northern Indiana Road Trip

Indiana is the perfect summer destination. There are so many fun things to do in northern Indiana. Whether you love outdoor adventures, unique cultural activities, local shopping, or excellent food, you can find it here in the Hoosier state. 

If you are looking for a road trip from Indianapolis this northern Indiana itinerary is just what you need! It also works well as a road trip from Chicago. Regardless of where you start, follow this Indiana road trip to explore three sections of northern Indiana. I recommend about two days in each area, but you can adjust the time as needed.

The following restaurants, places to stay, and things to do in northern Indiana are based on the mystery trip I planned for my mom and me. The additional recommendations are places I researched, but we didn’t have time to visit. Pick and choose your favorites to create your perfect northern Indiana road trip! 

If you’re looking for things to do in northeast Indiana, choose Fort Wayne for your first stop on your Indiana road trip. As the state’s second largest city there is plenty to do both indoors and outdoors. 

What To Do in Fort Wayne 

Rent kayaks from fort wayne outfitters .

Fort Wayne is known for the confluence of three rivers: St Marys River, St Joseph River, and Maumee River. The best way to explore the rivers is to get out in the water on a kayak, canoe, or SUP. 

Fort Wayne Outfitters rents them all. Located directly off the St Marys River they offer easy access to explore all three rivers. The staff is very helpful and will suggest a route. We spent two hours and headed SW as there were no dams or converging rivers. It was an easy, relaxing paddle in nature. We spotted a turtle and a blue heron, along with many ducks.  

Ride Sweet Breeze

If you want to go out on the river, but without paddling yourself you can take a river cruise. The canal boat tours last 45 – 90 minutes. As the tour is guided there is an added bonus of learning more about the city. 

Walk or Bike Along the Trails 

Do you prefer to stick to solid ground? Fort Wayne has a wide network of trails and parks, many of them along the rivers. Bicycles are available to rent from Fort Wayne Outfitters. 

Go Back in Time at the Historic Old Fort

One of the best things to do in northeast Indiana is to learn the history of the region. Any history lover needs to visit the Historic Old Fort. The original fort was built in 1815 as a military post. It was the third and last US fort in the area. While it was torn down in 1852, the current fort is an accurate reconstruction of the original. Reenactments take place throughout the year as well as general summer hours where you can take guided or self-guided tours through the buildings. 

Make sure you put ‘Historic Old Fort’ and not ‘Old Fort Park’ into your GPS. Your GPS will most likely lead you to the left side of the one way highway, but the parking lot for the Old Fort is on the right. After parking head towards St Marys River where you will find an underground path to reach the other side of the highway. 

Parking is available elsewhere in downtown and nearby parks such as Headwaters Park and Lawton Park. You can reach the fort on foot or bicycle on the connecting paths. 

Delve into More History at The History Center

Another great place for history lovers in Fort Wayne is the History Center. The museum’s permanent exhibits are organized chronologically beginning with the earliest history of the area and the Miami Tribe. The history continues with the establishment of Fort Wayne, the city’s early industries, and more recent innovations. 

Downstairs you’ll find the old county jail. There is some interesting information outside the cells, but I will admit it got a little too spooky for me! Rotating displays showcase different artifacts from the historical society’s collection. The displays focus on a variety of topics from the city and Allen County. 

Learn about Lincoln at the Rolland Center for Research

One more place for history buffs is at the Allen County Library downtown. The Rolland Center has a free exhibit on Abraham Lincoln. It covers his early life, his journey to presidency, and his family members. There are also a lot of details about the Civil War in general.

Despite Lincoln and the Civil War being a fairly well exhibited person and event, there was a lot of new information I learned. The exhibit is small, but full of interesting tidbits. 

Search for Street Art

Every Indiana road trip needs some color and art included. Like many US cities street art is popping up all over downtown Fort Wayne. Follow this public art map to find as many murals and sculptures downtown as you can.

Where to Eat in Fort Wayne

Cactus grill.

It can be hard finding really good authentic Mexican in the US. Cactus Grill exceeded my expectations. The modern decor would make you expect more Americanized dishes. While those are on the menu, there are also some really good traditional dishes like La Carnita Asada. The kitchen actually mixed up my order and I received it by mistake. I’m very glad I did as it was incredibly flavorful. The homemade salsas were also delicious. 

The restaurant is located north of downtown within a strip mall. There is free parking and it is close to Tru by Hilton , the hotel I recommend below. 

The Landing is where Fort Wayne began with the city’s earliest businesses. Now it’s a commercial area in the heart of downtown. Along the pedestrian-only street there are some shops and many great restaurants.

Nawa, a delicious southeastern Asian restaurant, is located at the Landing. My mom and I shared the curry sampler with roti, which was a great way to get a taste of the different curries. We also shared the cashew nut stir fry. I would recommend both! 

Famous Coney Island 

Opened in 1914, it is Fort Wayne’s oldest and longest running restaurant. They are known for their hot dogs, just like they were over a hundred years ago. While the prices have gone up, at $1.85 for a hot dog, you really can’t complain! 

Where To Stay in Fort Wayne 

Tru by hilton.

I think of Tru hotels as Hilton’s hip and trendy hotel brand. As a millennial the design definitely appealed more to me than my mom. My mom was not a fan of the squeeze bottles for soap and shampoo. I loved the Fort Wayne details in the lobby along with the games and various seating options.

We both agreed the Tru in Fort Wayne was a really clean hotel, with great service, and good breakfast options. Make sure to try out the pancake maker. If you want to be like the kids sitting next to me, you can even go crazy with all the pancake toppings! An indoor pool and gym are on site in case you want to burn off any of those breakfast calories. 

It’s located about 10 minutes north of downtown. It’s a quick drive to all the fun things to do in Fort Wayne, but has free parking and a lower price tag than downtown hotels. 

Other Highly Rated Places to Stay in Fort Wayne

• Springhill Suites North : I had originally booked here, but changed my reservation due to a Hilton promo. There is an indoor pool and breakfast is included. 
• Wyndham Garden : Located near the Tru, the hotel is a short drive to downtown. There is an indoor and outdoor connecting pool. 
• The Bradley : A four star hotel located in the heart of downtown. The luxury boutique hotel is within walking distance to all the best things to do in Fort Wayne.  

Fort Wayne Visiting Tips 

If you are used to driving in big cities you won’t find Fort Wayne too challenging. There are a lot of one way streets and bridges downtown that do add some confusion. While you need to pay for most of the parking downtown, some attractions offer free parking when you visit. This Fort Wayne parking map gives the locations, hours, and rates. 

Amish Country

Indiana has the third largest Amish population in the country. Known as Amish Country, Elkhart and LaGrange counties are home to the majority of the Amish in Indiana. Many of the fun things to do in northern Indiana are within Amish Country. 

You could easily spend weeks exploring all there is to do in the Amish Country, but this Indiana road trip focuses on some highlights from Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury, and Shipshewana. 

What To Do in Amish Country

Drive the heritage trail.

A 90 mile loop takes you through some of the most idyllic northern Indiana scenery as well as the seven thriving small town communities of Shipshewana, Middlebury, Elkhart, Bristol, Goshen, Nappanne, and Wakarusa. 

The loop is known as the Heritage Trail and has over 15 quilt gardens and over 20 quilt murals. The large quilt gardens are planted every year in May and bloom into beautiful quilt patterns. The hand painted quilt murals also feature quilt patterns. Map out your route to see this year’s sites.  

The following are more things to do as you visit the different small towns. 

Walk or Bike the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail

Another way to enjoy the peaceful Amish countryside is on the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail. The paved trail connects Goshen, Middlebury, and Shipshewana. 

Bicycles are available for rent at Pumpkinvine Cyclery in Middlebury, Essenhaus Inn in Middlebury, Farmstead Inn in Shipshewana, and Lincoln Avenue Cycling in Goshen. 

If you are staying at the Essenhaus Inn , as I recommend below, you can connect to the Pumpkinvine Trail from the Ridge Run Trail which goes directly to the Inn’s property. 

Wander Around Krider World’s Fair Gardens

Take the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail to the Krider World’s Fair Gardens in Middlebury. These gardens were part of a collection originally displayed at the 1934 Chicago World’s Fair. After the fair part of the display was moved to its current location which was across the street from the former Krider Nurseries.

The lovely gardens are perfect for a shaded walk. Some highlights of the gardens include a Dutch windmill, a rose garden with the Krider patented Festival Rose, a trestle bridge, and the annual quilt garden. 

There are public restrooms in the gardens. 

Find Answers to Your Questions at Menno-Hof

Like most visitors to Amish Country, you may have some questions about the Amish way of life. Menno-Hof in Shipshewana is the perfect place to begin your visit and gain an understanding about the history and current lifestyles of the Amish. 

Menno-Hof is a cultural center that is set up as a museum. It begins as a guided tour through various rooms that teach the history of the Anabaptists. You are then free to explore the exhibits on your own and discover how the different groups of Amish, Hutterites, and Mennonites came from the Anabaptists. 

You’ll learn about how the groups began in Indiana and the differences between the groups. The visit ends with two other guided rooms and another small exhibit. One hour and 15 minutes is the recommended visiting time, but I like to read everything so I spent over three hours! Plus I wanted to ace the quiz at the end……which I did! 

Shop at the Shipshewana Flea Market

As the largest flea market in the Midwest, it is one of the biggest draws to Shipshewana. It runs Tuesdays and Wednesdays May through September. With almost 700 booths there are a wide variety of items for sale from antiques to new, discount school supplies. My mom thought it was a little lacking in the antiques department. I was thrilled with all the food vendors and samples. 

Wednesday mornings live auctions take place in up to 10 separate rings. I had never seen a live auction before and I was quite amused by the whole process. I don’t know how people can hear and know what is going on! Just like the flea market you’ll see a little bit of everything here. 

It is $5 for parking. There is an on-site restaurant, food courts, and food vendors. 

Browse the Unique Shops

Shipshewana is known for the flea market, but that’s not the only shopping around Amish Country. Shipshewana is full of shops. Davis Mercantile is a very nice four story indoor mall with shops selling everything from quilting supplies to home goods to nostalgic candy. 

If you’re in the market for new furniture, the Amish are known for their quality, handcrafted pieces. They are also known for baked goods and other homemade products. I don’t know how anyone could visit the Dutch Country Market without buying something. Located between Shipshewana and Middlebury, the market is full of locally made goods. 

All the Amish communities have some nice shopping areas. 

Explore Linton’s Enchanted Gardens

Gardeners, decorators, shoppers, and children will all enjoy Linton’s Enchanted Gardens in Elkhart. As Indiana’s largest home & garden center it is full of plants and all the tools you need for planting. The displays are so beautiful that you don’t need to have an interest in landscaping to enjoy them. 

In addition to the nice landscaping and paths outdoors there are activities for the whole family. Activities include gemstone mining, a mini train ride, a petting zoo, swan boat rides, and more! 

Not to mention the large shopping area indoors full of home decor, gift items, and clothing. The seasonal and themed displays are very enticing. There is also a small cafe.

Where to Eat in Amish Country 

Venturi in Goshen is Indiana’s only certified Neapolitan pizza restaurant. It has made it onto numerous top pizza award lists nationwide. I can see why it was packed on a Monday night. The pizza truly is worth all the buzz it receives. Even the simple arugula salad was delicious thanks to top quality cheese and olive oil. 

Das Essenhaus Restaurant & Bakery

Located at the Essenhaus Inn & Conference Center in Middlebury, Das Essenhaus is Indiana’s largest restaurant. The restaurant can seat over 1,000 diners at a time! It’s the perfect spot for a hearty homestyle meal. 

Don’t leave without having dessert! With so many delicious baked goods, it is very hard to choose. I recommend eating pie in person and taking a cookie to go. It’s clear why the raspberry cream pie is the most popular!

JoJo’s Pretzels

With a location in Goshen and another in Shipshewana, you want to add a stop at JoJo’s Pretzels on your list of things to do in northern Indiana. Stop by for a pretzel at least, but you can also order soups or sandwiches for lunch. 

I’m into savory so I ordered the garlic pretzel. My mom has a big sweet tooth so she chose cinnamon sugar. Let’s just say I would be ecstatic if I could have one of those pretzels right now. 

Rise’n Roll Bakery 

The bakery began in 2001 in Middlebury from the front porch of an Amish couple’s house. After a few years the Amish couple sold their bakery and it has since grown to a local chain of about 15 bakeries in Indiana. I visited the Schererville bakery, but the majority are located in Amish Country. 

Even if you’re doing a road trip from Chicago and only planning on driving through Indiana, I don’t know why you’re reading this Indiana road trip post, but I’m glad you’re here and you should make time to stop at a Rise’n Roll location. My mom and I think about these donuts all the time! Oh how I could go for another one of their famous cinnamon caramel donuts right now! 

Where To Stay in Amish Country

Essenhaus inn & conference center.

This is the place to stay in Middlebury. Unlike the modern Tru hotel, my mom loved everything about the Essenhaus Inn . Although I typically prefer a more trendy look, I also really enjoyed the old world, country charm of this inn. 

An “inn” makes it sound like a small property, but the place is quite big. The owners refer to their property as a “campus” complete with the hotel, a conference center, shops, the largest restaurant in Indiana, a bakery, mini golf, an indoor pool, and carriage rides. It’s like an all-inclusive, but without everything being included. There is plenty to do without leaving the property.

If you do leave it’s a very short drive into Middlebury and a 15 minute drive to Shipshewana and Goshen. Trails at the property connect to the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail that you can use to reach Goshen, Middlebury, or Shipshewana on foot or by bicycle. There are bicycle rentals at Essenhaus. 

Other Highly Rated Places to Stay in Amish Country

• Farmstead Inn : If you are planning to visit the flea market, the Farmstead Inn is very handy as it is located across the street. 
• Blue Gate Garden Inn : This is another charming country inn to stay at in Shipshewana with a full breakfast included. 
• Travelodge by Wyndham : Located in Elkhart, this is a good budget option. 

Amish Country Visiting Tips 

It’s a unique experience to encounter so many horses and buggies on the roads. Be aware that they travel much slower than the speed limit. You can pass them, but make sure it is safe to do so. 

Also it is against the Amish culture to have their photographs taken. Do not ask to take their photos or take photos of Amish people from the front. 

Amish businesses are closed on Sundays, which means the majority of places are closed in Elkhart & LaGrange Counties on Sundays. 

Indiana Dunes

Continue your Indiana road trip to the Indiana Dunes which covers 15 miles of coastline along Lake Michigan in northwest Indiana. The most popular things to do in northwest Indiana are within the Indiana Dunes National Park and the Indiana Dunes State Park. Both parks make up the Indiana Dunes. The state park is located within the national park. 

What To Do in the Indiana Dunes

Start at the indiana dunes visitor center.

The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is the perfect place to start your time in the Indiana Dunes. Watch an orientation film about the national park. Talk with rangers and receive recommendations within the parks. Also find out about ranger led programs. 

Rent a bicycle from Pedal Power Rentals. Ride the Dunes Kankakee Trail that begins from the visitor center and travels north about 1.9 miles to the Indiana Dunes State Park. 

Do the Diana of the Dunes Dare

In the early 1900s Alice Mabel Gray, known as “Diana of the Dunes”, left the big city of Chicago and lived a solitary life in nature in the dunes. She was a big advocate of conserving the dunes. 

Today you can hike in her footsteps on the Dune Succession Trail (loop 1) at West Beach. It is a short trail, but includes lots and lots of stairs! The viewpoint at the top offers beautiful views of Lake Michigan and Chicago in the distance. 

The trail leads to West Beach where you can relax or swim in the lake. The bathhouse along the beach has restrooms and showers. It sells food as well. To complete a full loop continue back on the much shorter and flatter paved path to the parking lot. For a longer hike combine West Beach Trail (loop 2) and Long Lake Loop (loop 3) into one large loop hike. 

As the only national park beach with a lifeguard, this is also a great place to come if you want to go swimming without hiking. 

Hike the Paul H. Douglas Trail 

The 3.4 mile out and back trail begins at The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education. It then traverses through several different habitats including wetlands, a black oak savanna, across dunes, and to the lake. 

Much of the terrain is loose sand and includes some small inclines and declines over sand dunes. The trail is quite narrow in sections. It eventually ends at the beach. As it takes more effort to reach this beach, it is rarely busy and quite peaceful. When I hiked here there was only one other couple the entire time I was there.

Where to Eat Near the Indiana Dunes

If you have been following along with this Indiana road trip you may have noticed the variety in cuisines. In Michigan City I decided to spice things up for dinner even more, literally, with Jamaican food. 

They are known for their jerk dishes, especially jerk chicken. The jerk chicken wasn’t just some of the best jerk chicken I have ever had, but some of the best chicken of any kind. The jerk catfish was also very good, but unlike the chicken where the skin could be peeled off, the catfish was very spicy! 

There are two locations, one in South Bend and another in Michigan City. 

Aladdin Pita

I was really impressed with this Middle Eastern restaurant in Merrillville. The meal began with small dishes of hummus, Baba Gannoush, and pita. As these are listed on the menu as appetizers I was concerned we would be charged at the end. Not only were they included, but a choice of soup was also included with an entree. As our meals were about $13 each, I was happily surprised with the prices, quality of food, and amount of food.

Everything was great, but the lentil soup was the highlight of the meal for both my mom and I. 

Don Quijote Restaurant

We didn’t make it here, but this Spanish tapas restaurant looked really good. The restaurant is located in Valparaiso which is known as a foodie city full of great restaurants. The mom and pop ice cream shop, Valpo Velvet Shoppe can also be found here. 

Where To Stay Near the Indiana Dunes

Unlike many national parks located in remote areas with few options for accommodations, there are quite a few places to stay around the Indiana Dunes. If you are following this Indiana road trip you may want to stay in Michigan City on the way to the dunes and Merrillville after visiting them and on your way towards home. 

Hampton Inn & Suites Michigan City

The Hampton Inn & Suites in Michigan City was built a few years ago. The modern hotel has all the amenities you need for your stay including free breakfast, a gym, and an indoor pool with a hot tub. 

Located just south of Michigan City it is tucked away from the city, but it is very close to the interstate. Within a short 15 minute drive you can reach the Indiana Dunes National Park Visitor Center. 

Hampton Inn & Suites Merrillville 

This Hampton Inn is less than 30 minutes south from the majority of the places in Indiana Dunes National and State Parks. Located right off the interstate it is close to a wide variety of chain stores and restaurants, as well as a few local favorites in Merrillville. 

The hotel itself is slightly older, but the rooms have a nice, clean, and classic feel. Breakfast is included in the mornings as well as fresh baked cookies from 3 – 5pm everyday. I’m a big foodie and trust me when I say these cookies were a real treat! 

Other Highly Rated Places to Stay Near the Indiana Dunes

• Holiday Inn Express : Near the Michigan City Hampton Inn, the hotel is in a great location to visit both of the parks. Breakfast is included and an indoor swimming pool is available. 
• Spring House Inn : A basic local hotel right outside of the parks with breakfast included. 
• Gordon Beach Inn : Located in Union Pier it is less than a 10 minute walk to the beach and about a 30 minute drive to the eastern side of the national park. 

Indiana Dunes Visiting Tips 

Always check conditions before going swimming. Lake Michigan often has ocean like conditions and you can easily get caught in big waves or a rip tide. West Beach is the only beach with lifeguards. Conditions will be posted online and at the beach. When I visited, swimming wasn’t recommended due to e coli in the water. We were informed at the fee entrance booth. 

Indiana Dunes National Park is $15 per person or $25 for one vehicle for 7 days. Buy an America the Beautiful pass if you’re visiting several national parks within one year. 

Indiana Dunes State Park daily fee is $7 for an in-state vehicle and $12 for out of state vehicles. It is $2 a day to enter as a pedestrian. 

The national park and state park fees are separate and not reciprocal, so you need to plan accordingly.

M-22 Road Trip: a scenic drive along the Lake Michigan shoreline

With dramatic views across Lake Michigan, M-22 is one of the state's most famous scenic drives, with picturesque shorelines and beautiful countryside all along the route. Beside the stunning scenery, you'll stumble upon quaint towns along the way, including charming Manistee and historic Frankfort.

It takes 2 hours 50 minutes to drive the scenic M-22, following the shore of Lake Michigan for 120 miles through Manistee, Arcadia and Frankfort to Traverse City or start in Chicago for a 7 hour 20 minute, 390-mile trip via Indiana Dunes and Holland.

During fall the striking greenery turns vibrant red and brown, making it a wonderful time to drive this scenic Michiganroad. M-22 was even voted 'Best Scenic Autumn Drive' back in 2015, so keep on reading to find out what makes it such an amazing drive whatever time of year you visit.

Where is M-22?

The whole length of M-22 is in Michigan, following a stretch of the Northeastern shore of Lake Michigan. It passes through small fishing towns and villages such as Manistee, Onekama, Frankfort, Lake Township, Leland, Northport and Traverse City.

The scenic road offers beautiful lake views throughout the drive, but there are also some amazing natural wonders that you'll pass, including Arcadia Dunes, Crystal Lake, Glen Lake, West Arm Grand Traverse Bay.

Where does M-22 begin and end?

Manistee, on the shore of Lake Michigan, is where the scenic drive along M-22 begins.

This small town, located 265 miles out of Chicago, is famous for its picturesque views, historic downtown, and also as a gateway into Huron Manistee National Forest.

M-22 runs right the way up to Traverse City, which is also in Michigan. Looking out over the West and East Arms of Grand Traverse Bay, it has fantastic freshwater beaches. It's also known as the Cherry Capital of the World!

How long is M-22, and how long will it take to drive the entire M-22?

M-22 itself is about 120 miles long, including the short distance you'll need to travel along other roads to get all the way from Manistee to Traverse City, Michigan.

You can cover this distance in around 2 hours and 50 minutes if you don't make any stops, meaning you could easily complete the round trip in half a day.

Many travellers will make their way from other cities in the region. One of the most popular is Chicago, which is 265 miles away from Manistee. If you start your trip from the Windy City then the one-way drive via M-22 to Traverse City is 390 miles long.

With a driving time of 7 hours and 20 minutes, you'll probably want to stop at least once on your drive from Chicago. With so many amazing views to admire along the way, we'd suggest taking your time so that you can really appreciate this amazing part of the world - a night or two by the lakeshore makes the perfect scenic getaway.

Best way to drive M-22

Driving the full 120 miles of the M-22 allows you to see the scenic road in its full glory. You'll ride along the eastern shores of Lake Michigan then turn along the western side of Great Traverse Bay before reaching your destination.

As you'll be following this one road almost all the way, it's pretty simple to navigate this route so you can give all your attention to the stunning beaches, lush forests and quaint towns you'll pass.

M-22 is still considered something of a hidden gem, so heavy traffic isn't usually an issue. Along the way, you're sure to find a secluded spot to pause and admire Lake Michigan.

If, like many travellers, you're starting your trip from Chicago, you'll find that the route via Interstate 90 (I-90) and I-94 is pretty straightforward. As an added bonus, you'll be able to enjoy the southern shores of Lake Michigan along the way.

As well as nature spots and sweeping lake views you'll pass through charming towns like Holland voted 'America's Prettiest Town' not too long ago.

Driving the entire length of M-22

Leave Manistee on Route 31, heading toward the airport. A little way out of town you'll take a left turn just after Little River to pick up the start of M-22, this scenic drive that you'll be following for the next few hours.

This will take you north, swinging round the shore of Portage Lake before carrying on through Arcadia and Green Point Dunes.

Next, after crossing Betsie Lake, you'll reach Frankfort where you can stop to explore this charming historic town. From here the road hugs the shore of Lake Crystal and carries on through Empire and Glen Arbor.

Follow the road around Good Harbor Bay then up past Clay Cliffs Natural Area to Northport, where you'll change direction and start heading south along Great Traverse Bay.

From Sutton Bay, the road cuts inland for a couple of miles before you begin the final, stunning stretch along Great Traverse Bay into Traverse City.

Driving M-22 from Chicago to Traverse City

Head east out of Chicago on I-90 then merge onto I-94 near Portage. The interstate will take you past Indiana Dunes National Park then on into Michigan, where you'll change onto the I-196 a little way past Benton and St Joseph.

Follow I-196 along the shore of Lake Michigan until you reach Holland, where you exit onto Highway 31 to continue north. The highway will take you all the way to Manistee to start the scenic part of this drive, passing through Grand Haven and Muskegon along the way.

Best places to stay along M-22

You can drive the length of M-22 in a single day, but with such a beautiful landscape to explore many travellers choose to stay a night or two while they make the drive.

Empire, Michigan

Whether you're travelling from Manistee or all the way from Chicago, a great place to spend the first night of your trip is the coastal small town of Empire.

Several of the vineyards and wineries are open to visitors. Famous establishments where you can have taste of the local wines include Bowers Harbor Vineyards, Mari Vineyards, Chateau Chantal Winery and Brys Estate Winery.

Downtown Traverse City is on the shoreline of the west part of Grand Traverse Bay, and when you walk along scenic Front Street you can visit stores, galleries and restaurants. Don't forget to visit Cherry Republic for cherry related products while you're in the Cherry Capital of the World!

Also on West Grand Traverse Bay is Clinch Park, a popular spot with sandy beaches - bring a picnic and enjoy a scenic lunch. Nearby, the renovated historic site of The Village at Grand Traverse Commons now offers shopping, fine dining, gardens, and spa treatments.

Most travellers are immediately attracted to the road trip along M-22 by the fabulous lakeshore views, but there are plenty of other attractions that make this drive the perfect pick for a scenic road trip.

Things to see on the road trip from Chicago to Manistee

• Gary, Indiana - Go to Marquette Park and see the 1921 Pavilion next to the lagoon and Lake Street Beach.
• Indiana Dunes National Park, Porter - Indiana Dunes is a 15,000-acre National Park next to the Lake Michigan shoreline. You can explore the dunes, prairies, rivers and forests on the 50 miles of hiking trails.
• Michigan City - Immerse yourself in the forest and streams at Trail Creek and take photographs at the Michigan City East Light.
• South Haven - Stroll the picturesque Van Buren State Park with 1-mile-long tranquil beach. There are campgrounds, picnic tables and grills waiting.
• Holland - With its historic charm and cobblestone sidewalks, pretty Holland has been voted America's Prettiest Town, so it's the perfect place to stop and explore.
• Grand Haven - Visit this graceful small town between May and September to see the Grand Haven Musical Fountain, which performs synchronized routines at dusk.
• Pentwater - You'll find stunning beaches in Pentwater, where you can join in on a yoga class on the Charles Mears State Park beach in the summer.
• Ludington - Step back in time to pioneer times at the Historic White Pine Village. The village includes an original 1849 County Courthouse and a working sawmill.

Things to see on the M-22 between Manistee and Traverse City

• Manistee - Spend a few hours in the Manistee Historical Museum to learn more about the town, then go fishing on the Manistee River or enjoy the Orchard Beach State Park.
• Captain John Langland Park, Onekama - For a secluded beach walk, go to Captain John Langland Beach. You can park 90 yards from the water.
• Arcadia Dunes - Follow the Overlook Trail to look over Lake Michigan from a new perspective.
• Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore - The sand dunes here are huge and walking up the dune climb is a strenuous hike. For more accessible views, ask a ranger at the Philip Hart Visitor Center.
• Glen Lake, Glen Arbor - Hire a boat or pontoon and spend a day on the inland Glen Lake. Surrounded by dunes and forested hills, it's a scenic day on the clear waters.
• Nedows Bay, Leland - Canoe and kayak at Nedows Bay. A family-friendly beach it's a popular stop in the summer months.
• Clay Cliffs Natural Area, The Leelanau Conservancy - Take a hike through forest terrain to the viewing platform. You'll see Lake Michigan to your west and Lake Leelanau to the east.
• Omena - Taste the local wines at Leelanau Wine Cellars and Tasting Room. They'll offer free samples as you overlook the Grand Traverse Bay.
• Suttons Bay - Before arriving at Suttons Bay, try your hand in Leelanau Sands Casino. Then visit Suttons Bay with its wealth of wineries and restaurants.
• Boughey Park, North Traverse City - Boughey Park is a small and quiet beach. There are seating areas and picnic tables on the waterfront.

Best time to visit M-22

Michigan has warm summers followed by harsh winters which bring freezing temperatures with snow and ice. This means that, depending on the time of year, your driving experience along the M-22 will vary.

In summer, temperatures seldom exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit or fall below 55 degrees, so although it's not excessively hot, the weather sees people flock to beaches to enjoy water-based activities. June, July and August are the hottest months, and also when the beaches near M-22 are busiest.

In contrast, from November through to February you'll experience extremely cold conditions. Temperatures can drop as low as 18 degrees Fahrenheit.

Snow is common from December to February, but it's rare for it to cause closures on the M-22. With fewer visitors to the beaches, you're likely to have a quieter journey in winter. However, this also means that some shops, trails and smaller roads may not be open during winter months.

Thanks to the M-22 being coined the 'Best Autumn Scenic Drive' fall is actually the most popular time to drive this route. To see the foliage changing color in spectacular style, visit mid-October.

September and October have an average temperature of around 60 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, so it isn't too cold and it's comfortable enough to hike the trails.

Fast forward to spring and March remains cold, with temperatures averaging around 35 degrees Fahrenheit, but by May that rises to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Spring is a great time to visit because the greenery comes to light and many open businesses open their doors after winter closures. If you're making this road trip in May, you will catch the Annual Tulip Festival in Holland.

Whatever time of year you visit, you can be sure to come home with unforgettable memories of the ever-changing Lake Michigan shoreline, which makes for a beautiful drive in all seasons.

Discover Michigan's Beloved Left Coast on a 4-Day Road Trip

Follow the shore to laid-back beach towns, spectacular sunsets and dune preserves.

The western edge of Michigan is a summer vacation destination offering often-uncrowded beaches, lovely small towns and some of Michigan's most beautiful scenery. This four-day driving trip includes some highlights in the area, starting from New Buffalo, Michigan, which is only about an hour's drive from Chicago (stop at one of the country's newest national parks on the way, Indiana Dunes) and a little over two hours from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Once you set off, your busiest driving day will be day two, with about 3.5 leisurely hours on the road. End up in Mackinaw City, where you can add to your adventure with a trip to Mackinac Island, where no cars are allowed; leave yours in Mackinaw City and catch a quick ferry.

Day 1: New Buffalo to Saugatuck (90 miles)

Near the border with Indiana, New Buffalo is the gateway to Lake Michigan's “Harbor Country,” a series of beach towns strung together by the Red Arrow Highway and a popular cottage retreat for Chicagoans. Their tastes in food have followed, making the area a great stop for ice cream (Oink's Dutch Treat in New Buffalo), hamburgers (Redamak's, also in New Buffalo, April-October.) and beer (Greenbush Brewing Co. in nearby Sawyer, 10 miles north).

In Sawyer, climb the 260-foot sand dunes at Warren Dunes State Park and run back down them to the beach. If that's too busy, head north 10 miles to Grand Mere State Park, with undulating trails through the dune system as well as access to a mile-long beach.

Continue along the Red Arrow to the Blue Star Highway or hop on Interstate 96 roughly 35 miles to South Haven, home of DeGrandchamp Farms, famous for its u-pick blueberry fields in July and August and a good place to get a sense of the fruit-growing bounty of southwest Michigan.

Twenty miles on, sophisticated Saugatuck and its neighbor Douglas comprise Michigan's “Art Coast,” filled with galleries (don't miss local Impressionist James Brandess’ studio and gallery in Saugatuck). For a picnic dinner of charcuterie and local cheese, drive 9 miles southeast to Virtue Cider, which produces cider on a working farm in Fennville.

Where to stay:  For a worthy splurge, overnight at charming Wickwood Inn for pedestrian access to downtown Saugatuck and farm-to-table breakfasts (currently under renovation, the inn reopens in May). Rooms range from about $300 to more than $400 per night, depending on the size. If that’s a bit rich, check out Airbnb or other short-term rental sites, though try to book early (summer is a busy time in these parts). There are also some chain hotels in the area.

Day 2: Saugatuck to Glen Arbor (185 miles)

Take a sunrise hike through the dunes at Saugatuck from Mount Baldhead Park to Oval Beach before hitting the highway (196 to 131) for Holland, 12 miles north. The Dutch-settled town has a popular tulip festival (in May) and a working windmill in Windmill Island Gardens (you can buy the flour it grinds in the gift shop), as well as an 1870-vintage lighthouse known as Big Red at Holland State Park. Pick up picnic fare at DeBoer's Bakery, including Dutch brown bread and double-fried chicken sandwiches.

Take it about 20 miles north to the beach at Grand Haven or the town's 2.5-mile harborside boardwalk, where you can snap photos of its 1839-vintage lighthouse (this is also a great place to rent a bike from Sun Sports Rentals and cycle some of the 20-mile paved Lakeshore Trail that connects Holland and Grand Haven).

Fifteen miles north in Muskegon, drive by the Victorian-era Hackley and Hume historic houses to get a look at the wealth generated a century ago by lumber barons (May-October). Nearby, stroll the Monet Garden, a mini replica of painter Claude Monet's famous garden in Giverny, France, and restock your picnic cooler at the Cheese Lady downtown. Let the guides of Mac Wood's Dune Rides take the wheel over the 2,000-acre dunes of Silver Lake State Park in a 40-minute tour exploring the dune habitat and delivering open-air thrills (May-October).

Just north of Manistee, take Motorway 22 to stick to the lake route to catch a picture-perfect sunset as you pull into Glen Arbor for fried smelt and local Vernors sodas at 1934-landmark Art's Tavern.

Where to stay: The Omni Homestead offers a full complement of resort amenities — pool, spa, golf course — as well as a mile of Lake Michigan shore. Rooms start at about $250 a night and up.

Day 3: Glen Arbor to Petoskey (130 miles)

Backtrack six miles to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, where the sand dunes rise up to 400 feet above Lake Michigan along 65 miles of shore, for a sunrise dune climb before the sands warm to blistering. The Dune Climb is hearty fun (do try rolling down), but if you're looking for a workout, take the 3.5-mile round-trip Dunes Trail to Lake Michigan.

Reward yourself with all things cherry — this is Michigan's cherry-growing region — from cherry chicken salad to cherry ice cream at the Cherry Public House in Glen Arbor. Continue north on M-22 to explore the Leelanau Peninsula — the divergent pinkie of the mitten that is the shape of Michigan's Lower Peninsula — where cherry orchards mingle with newer vineyards. In Suttons Bay, pick up a bottle of Riesling or Cabernet Franc at Black Star Farms and a wedge of raclette at Leelanau Cheese.

Sixteen miles south, Traverse City is the metropolis of the north, popular for its brewing, arts and outdoor pursuits at the base of Grand Traverse Bay. Indulge your architectural interests by walking among the elegant Victorian homes of the Central Neighborhood and within the sprawling period asylum, now converted into the mixed-use and shop-filled Grand Traverse Commons. The 67-mile drive along U.S. 31 to Petoskey threads the narrows between Lake Michigan and sparkling inland lakes.

Where to stay:  One of the original Great Lakes resorts, the 1899-vintage Stafford's Perry Hotel anchors Petoskey's historic Gaslight District, filled with shops and restaurants, including City Park Grill, hangout of a young Ernest Hemingway. Guest rooms start at about $199 a night.

Day 4: Petoskey to Mackinaw City (70 miles)

Spend a meditative hour searching for Petoskey stones — the unique fossilized state stone — at the downtown break wall on Little Traverse Bay. As you leave Petoskey, you'll drive through a distinctly Victorian cottage settlement known as Bay View, founded in 1875 as a seasonal Methodist community devoted to recreation, education and the arts. Soak in the history on a walk; the community publishes a self-guided walking tour brochure.

Ten miles and Little Traverse Bay separates Petoskey and Harbor Springs, a New England-style resort town filled with shops (take back local preserves from American Spoon). Harbor Springs is the gateway to Motorway 119, a beloved 20-mile lake-skirting road known as the Tunnel of Trees. It delivers you to tiny Cross Village, home of the iconic Legs Inn, a rustic fieldstone lodge filled with driftwood sculptures (June-October). Dine in the lakeview garden on Great Lakes whitefish and Polish classics such as pierogi and kielbasa. Digest over the 30-minute trip north to Wilderness State Park, occupying a windswept peninsula tapering off into Lake Michigan and a great spot to beachcomb.

End your trip at the Straits of Mackinac, about 10 miles east, where lakes Huron and Michigan meet at Mackinaw City, jumping off point for offshore Mackinac Island, where you can't take the car because motor vehicles are forbidden.

Where to stay:  Enjoy the beach at Lake Huron in front of the Hamilton Inn Select Beachfront, where double rooms run from about $80 to $300 a night.

I did a national park road trip out west from Michigan… x2! Detroit, Indiana, Chicago, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho

There are truly soooooo many different ways that you can do a road trip out west from Michigan!

So consider below a starting point to give you ideas… the places I went on a road trip out west from the Detroit area!

For both of the road trips west, time on the road from leaving Michigan to driving back was around 3 weeks.

I did more than just national parks.

It’s possible to make it shorter.

It is all about your time, interests, and more!

It will depend on a lot things, including how much driving you prefer to do, how many stops you want to make along the way, and how much time you want to spend in one location to take it all in at a slower pace!

Of course the more time you have will always be better!

But ideally, you’ll have at least 2 weeks to do a road trip out west when you’re driving from Michigan.

It will take you 2-3 days one way just to get to South Dakota or Wyoming.

So again, this is just to get you started!

Note that in addition to the “official” national parks (called “national park” in the name), there are national monuments , national memorials , national lakeshores , and more nationally designated sites also operated by the National Park Service.

National park road trip out west #1: Dakotas road trip

Detroit michigan to indiana to chicago to wisconsin to minnesota to north dakota to south dakota… and back.

In August 2021, I did a road trip out west to North Dakota and South Dakota from Michigan.

There is one official national park in North Dakota, and there are 2 official national parks in South Dakota .

National parks to visit for your road trip out west to North Dakota and South Dakota:

• Theodore Roosevelt National Park (North Dakota)
• Badlands National Park (South Dakota)
• Mount Rushmore National Memorial (South Dakota)
• Wind Cave National Park (South Dakota)
• Jewel Cave National Monument (South Dakota)

For Mount Rushmore, Wind Cave, and Jewel Cave, you can stay in one spot and do day trips. You need to plan ahead for the cave tours because they sell out early in the day.

Staying in Custer State Park would give you the best outdoors experience and a good location to do those day trips. There’s regular lodging, regular camping, and some camping cabins .

The big city nearby is Rapid City SD, but it would be more convenient to stay in a smaller town around Custer State Park.

While you are in the area, you may also be interested in the Mammoth Site National Natural Landmark .

National park road trip out west #2: Wyoming road trip

In September and October 2021, I did a road trip to out west to Wyoming from Michigan.

There are 2 official national parks in Wyoming .

National parks to visit for your road trip out west to Wyoming, along the way, and beyond:

• Devils Tower National Monument (Wyoming)
• Grand Teton National Park (Wyoming)
• Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming)
• Craters of the Moon National Monument (Idaho)

Michigan doesn’t have to work hard to make its case for being a mighty American road trip destination.

The state is home to more beaches than the entire Atlantic seaboard, it’s bordered by four of the five Great Lakes, and more than half of the state’s land is blanketed by forest.

Toss into the mix some towering sand dunes, isolated lake islands and scenic byways, plus a dash of roadside allure (Covered bridges! Lighthouses! Kitschy historic downtowns!), and you have an indelible blueprint for a classic road trip.

Here are eight of our favorite Michigan road trips to get your motor running.

1. Driving around Michigan's "Mitten"

Best road trip for exploring the Upper Peninsula Detroit–Detroit; 987 miles

Pull on your best driving gloves; this road trip is the big one. Speaking of gloves, Michigan's Lower Peninsula is nicknamed “the Mitten" because of its distinctive shape (look it up – it makes more sense when you see it on a map), and threading along its outer edges on this epic drive takes in some of the state's best natural scenery.

Heading out of Detroit  and following the coast clockwise, you'll skirt the extensive shorelines of Lake St Clair, Lake Huron and Lake Michigan, the latter of which is home to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, one of only three protected lakeshore areas in the country and the perfect spot to spend a night under canvas.

Road trippers who prefer a cozy B&B to a night in the wild needn’t stress, though. The route brims with lakeside villages and towns, including St Joseph, Tawas City, Harbor Springs, Petrosky, Traverse City, Elberta, Ludington, and Douglas, all with attractions and charm to warrant a pause of a night or two. Once well rested, finish off the journey by climbing the cloud-kissing sand dunes at Warren Dunes State Park , 15 miles northeast of the Indiana border. Tower Hill, the park's tallest dune, stands at a whopping 240ft.

2. The Gold Coast

Best road trip for beaches and shoreline Saugatuck–Mackinaw City; 366 miles

Appropriately named the Gold Coast , Michigan's 300-mile western shoreline is a sun-kissed stretch of golden beaches and wind-whipped sand dunes. Together, the M-22 Scenic Drive and US-31 run the length of it, hugging the Lake Michigan coast from the beautiful resort town of Saugatuck to the end of the line 293 miles north in Mackinaw City, which is actually a village that's home to an 18th-century French fort.

Along the way, the meandering stretch of road passes storybook orchards and vineyards, snug harbors, Victorian mansions, Hemingway haunts and slow-paced, accommodation-rich beach towns.

Planning tip: Looking for Michigan's best beaches ? Oval Beach in Saugatuck, Fifth Avenue Beach in Manistee and Good Harbor Bay Beach south of Leland are great spots for a quick dip in summer.

3. Michigan in the middle

Best road trip for seeing Michigan old and new Detroit–St Joseph; 206 miles

Lengthy shorelines commandeer the lion's share of travel adventures in this state, but Michigan's middle ain't too shabby, either, offering a cultural rewind of sorts, from new and improved Detroit to a bygone era in St Joseph.

Begin in the storied metropolis of Detroit, where iconic American brands Ford, Chrysler and Motown built a city that has rebranded itself in the last decade, emerging from years of economic decline like a hipster phoenix. Enjoy the fruits of formerly abandoned buildings turned distilleries, breweries, cafes, galleries and boutiques before heading west on I-94 to Ann Arbor, a college town home to the University of Michigan.

Next up on the route is Battle Creek, boasting southwestern Michigan's only natural history museum, located within a massive 72-acre arboretum. Continue on to Paw Paw, where you can dabble around the edges of southwest Michigan wine country, before reaching St Joseph, on the shores of Lake Michigan, where the famed Silver Beach Carousel twirls amid an antiquated era of refined amusement.

4. Taking it slow in Harbor Country

Best road trip for a short shore drive Michiana–Sawyer; 17 miles

For a taste of Michigan's western shoreline without the commitment of a 300-mile trip, the eight charming beach towns that make up Harbor Country , on the southern end of the coast, offer an adventure in miniature.

Along the shore, golden sands, picturesque marinas and handsome hamlets pepper the route from Michiana, mere steps from the Indiana border and only an hour from downtown Chicago, to Sawyer, the northernmost Harbor Country community. Highlights along the way include the region's largest public beach in New Buffalo, one of Michigan’s largest organic distilleries (Journeyman in Three Oaks), Michigan's most-awarded and longest-running winery (St Julian Wine Company in Union Pier) and a surplus of antique shops, artsy boutiques, fine-dining restaurants and preserved Americana charm.

Planning tip:  You can drive the route in a mere 22 minutes, but that's not the point – this is a leisurely road trip of discovery.

5. Upper Peninsula lighthouses

Best road trip for lighthouse spotting Munising–Escanaba; 513 miles

Few items feature prettier on a postcard than a well-preserved lighthouse, and no state boasts more of these maritime icons (129!) than Michigan. (Maine sits humbly in second place with 80 lighthouses.) Michigan's Great White North, the Upper Peninsula  features 40 or so of these nautical towers, most built in the 1800s, of which a dozen or so are open for tours.

This counterclockwise adventure begins with the Munising Range Lighthouses at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and follows the peninsula's edge east, south and back west to Escanaba, where both the Peninsula Point Lighthouse (1866) and Sand Point Lighthouse (1867) are open for tours and tower climbs.

Along the way, don't miss preserved gems such as the Au Sable Light Station (also in Pictured Rocks), Crisp Point Lighthouse in Paradise (which has sat beautifully on Lake Superior’s ominously named Shipwreck Alley since 1904), the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point Lighthouse, and the views on offer atop the Point Iroquois Lighthouse in Brimley.

6. River Road National Scenic Byway

Best road trip for nature Oscoda–Hale; 26 miles

Extending westward from Lake Huron into the Huron–Manistee National Forests, the River Road National Scenic Byway affords an opportunity to drive into the natural wonders of Michigan's interior. 

Hugging the Au Sable River, once a vital route for transporting giant white pine from the forest to Lake Huron's sawmill towns, this family-friendly road trip takes in riverside campgrounds, scenic outlooks, monuments, historic sights, hiking and cross-country ski trails.

7. Sunrise Coast

Best road trip for scenic views Au Gres–Mackinaw City; 179 miles

Lake Michigan tends to hog most of the headlines, but Lake Huron is perfectly content in its position as the quiet underdog to the east, offering those who choose the Huron Shores Heritage Route a long list of wineries, lighthouses, art galleries, marine sanctuaries and, of course, spectacular sunrises.

This road trip begins in Au Gres, the gateway to Michigan's sunrise side, before jutting straight north paralleling some 200 miles of shoreline along US-23 all the way to Mackinaw City, where ferries can be caught to tranquil Mackinac Island. 

Besides the postcard-perfect day breaks, worthwhile stops include Charity Island Lighthouse, Tawas Point State Park (boasting one of eastern Michigan's best beaches), Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary (the Great Lakes' only marine sanctuary) and Cheboygan, home to wineries, breweries, lighthouses and endless small-town charm.

8. Tunnel of Trees

Best road trip for forests Harbor Springs–Cross Village; 16 miles

Michigan's historic M-119 scenic route, otherwise known as the Tunnel of Trees, is a narrow ride along a stunning bluff overlooking Lake Michigan that sits under a canopied thatch of hardwoods and evergreens. 

In addition to the outstanding forested vistas in all directions, openings in the patchwork reveal spectacular water views over the lake. Beyond the scenery, the route dishes up small-town charisma in spades, including old-timey general stores, farms offering provisions, vineyards, breweries, artist boutiques, studios, galleries and a wealth of historic diversions. You can stretch this road trip out a little on each end as well, tacking on the charming town of Petoskey (with cozy B&Bs, spas and golf), ten miles south of Harbor Springs, and Wilderness State Park (beaches and hiking trails), 16 miles north of Cross Village.

Planning tip: This route is at its most colorful and brilliant in fall, when prisms of light fight for space through breaches in the lush foliage, but each season has its highlights.

From Hell to Paradise in a Day | A Michigan Road Trip Itinerary

Did you know that it’s possible to go from Hell to Paradise in a single day? Well, in Michigan, only 338 miles lay between the two towns, and it’s an easy drive from one to the other. But don’t just drive the distance — make a few stops along the way to make it a true Michigan road trip !

Here’s our suggested itinerary for a one-day road trip from Hell to Paradise:

Eat Breakfast in Hell

While the indoor attraction won’t be open while you’re there, start your day at Go To Hell for the sake of the adventure, but be ready to hit the road after a quick photo op with the Gates of Hell.

As the song says, “ They don’t serve breakfast in Hell ,” so you’ll need to make a quick pit stop in nearby Pinckney before you hit the road. We recommend grabbing a bite to eat at Mimi’s Diner . The biscuits and gravy are sure to fuel you up for the road trip ahead.

P.S. We recommend starting your road trip first thing in the morning, so be sure to book a room nearby if you’re not local. This will also give you the option of visiting the Hell Saloon the night before since you’ll be hitting the road before it opens for the day.

See the State Capitol in Lansing

If you can time it right, visit the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing and take a guided tour to learn about the state’s history and government. The building is a National Historic Landmark and houses the offices of the Michigan Legislature and the Governor’s Office.

The tour includes visits to the House and Senate chambers, the rotunda, and the governor’s ceremonial office. The building also features stunning architecture and artwork, including a grand staircase and murals depicting Michigan’s history.

NOTE: Spend an hour or so exploring, but then jump back on the road… we’ve got a lot to see before we reach Paradise at the end of the day!

Take a Lunch Break at Cops & Doughnuts in Clare

Is it even possible to drive through Clare without stopping at the iconic Cops & Doughnuts headquarters?!? We certainly wouldn’t want to have to do so!

Cops & Doughnuts is a bakery located in Clare Michigan that is owned and operated by a group of police officers. The bakery offers a variety of delicious doughnuts, pastries, and other baked goods that are made fresh daily.

The business was started by the police officers in an effort to save the historic Clare City Bakery from closing. Today, Cops & Doughnuts has become a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and the bakery has even expanded to include additional locations in nearby Mt. Pleasant, Gaylord, and Bay City.

While not your typical lunch destination, we encourage grabbing a dozen doughnuts to munch on while you drive.

NOTE: It might be tempting to sit and linger, but you should grab a quick lunch and get back on the road… Paradise is calling!

Explore the Call of the Wild in Gaylord

The Call of the Wild Museum is a unique museum located in Gaylord Michigan that showcases the natural history of The Mitten’s wildlife. The museum features over 60 full-size mounts of animals native to Michigan, including bears, wolves, deer, and more.

Visitors can learn about the animals and their habitats through interactive exhibits and educational displays. Also, the museum has a gift shop where visitors can purchase souvenirs and other wildlife-related items.

The Call of the Wild Museum is a must-see destination for nature lovers and anyone interested in Michigan’s wildlife. Give yourself an hour or two to stretch your legs as you explore this fascinating museum.

Cross the Mackinac Bridge

Anyone who travels in Michigan knows the thrill of crossing the Mighty Mac. Whether it’s your first time or one-thousandth (if you’re so well-traveled from the Lower Peninsula to the Upper Peninsula, we’re jealous!), it never fails to leave you giddy as the first glimpse of the bridge comes into view.

Crossing the Mackinac Bridge is a breathtaking experience. The bridge spans 5 miles across the Straits of Mackinac, connecting Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas. As you cross the bridge, you’ll enjoy stunning views of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, as well as the picturesque Mackinac Island .

NOTE: If you’re looking for a photo op with the bridge, exit the highway just before or after it. There are great parks on either end with stunning views.

Climb to the Top of Castle Rock in St Ignace

And while we’re on the subject of stunning views, don’t miss climbing to the top of Castle Rock just across the bridge in the Upper Peninsula for panoramic views of the entire Straits.

Castle Rock is a unique natural landmark located in St. Ignace Michigan. This rock formation stands 195 feet tall and offers stunning panoramic views of Lake Huron and the surrounding area.

Visitors can climb to the top of the rock via a staircase and observation deck, or take an elevator for an easier ascent. The site also features a gift shop and snack bar, making it a great destination for a family outing or a quick stop on a road trip.

NOTE: Spend a few minutes taking it all in, but don’t linger too long as your bellies are likely getting hungry, and dinner in Paradise is next on our itinerary.

Enjoy Dinner & Drinks in Paradise

Whether the kids are kicking each other in the backseat or you’re just ready to get out of the car after a day full of adventuring, we’ve got good news… you’ve made it! Our next stop along this road trip from Hell to Paradise is Tahquamenon Falls Brewery & Pub .

And, if you’re like us, we won’t be ready to turn south and head home for the night. So we’ll be booking a room in Paradise for a night or two (there’s so much more to explore in the Eastern Upper Peninsula!).

Not every summer vacation has to be complicated. You could just get in the car and drive a few hours to an out-of-state destination full of summer fun. Who doesn't love a road trip?

Here are 13 ideas for easy trips to take this summer (or maybe this spring, if you're feeling antsy).

Cedar Point

Where : 1 Cedar Point Drive, Sandusky, Ohio

Overview : Cedar Point is the ultimate theme park for those who love rollercoasters. You can also see some shows and enjoy the beach but Cedar Point is most appreciated by the true thrill-seeker.

Overview : Take a trip to Milwaukee. Yeah, you could drive around Lake Michigan to get there but wouldn't it be more fun to drive your car onto a ferry and take a break from road travel while you enjoy the view?

Highlights : The ferry ride is a highlight but there is also plenty to look forward to once it is over. Milwaukee offers culture, nightlife, sporting events and more.

Overview : Do you consider yourself a beer aficionado? Have you tried the offerings of 3 Floyds? All the offerings? You had better get to Munster fast, if your answer is "no."

Highlights : The ultimate highlight is what many dub as the world's most wanted beer -- 3 Floyds Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout. May 19 is Dark Lord Day at the brewery. It is the only day of the year that the special stout is available and you have to buy a ticket to get it.

Overview : There are so many amazing things going on in Pittsburgh. Uniquely located at the convergence of three rivers, Pittsburgh is a low maintenance big city. Wear a flannel and drink an Iron City straight from the can. You don't need to sacrifice comfort here.

Highlights : The views are amazing and getting to the top of the hill is half the fun. If you head to Pittsburgh, you have to take a ride up Mount Washington on the Duquesne Incline or the Monongahela Incline. Once at the top, grab a drink or a bite from an eatery overlooking the city.

If life-sized cartoon characters near the Grand Canyon or exotic animals on the way to Tucson sound like better pit stops than the local gas station, you're in luck when driving in Arizona.

Bedrock City at Raptor Ranch

As if Fred Flintstone's prehistoric town had always been set in Arizona, visiting Bedrock City at Raptor Ranch will make baby boomers (and anyone else who watched reruns of the popular '60s cartoon) nostalgic for their childhood. Colorful statues of familiar characters and the iconic brontosaurus slide have been essential roadside attractions off State Route 64 in Valle.

Four Corners Monument Navajo Tribal Park

Less of a roadside attraction and more of a cool fun fact you can share, the Four Corners Monument Navajo Tribal Park recognizes the only place in the U.S. where the borders of four states meet. After visiting, you can finally join many Southwestern residents in saying you have been in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona all at the same time.

Meteor Crater

Over 50,000 years ago, an iron-nickel meteorite approximately 150 feet wide collided with what is now northern Arizona. According to the site's website, the impact hit the Earth with a force 150 times greater than an atomic bomb. The crater this meteor left is now the best-preserved meteorite site on Earth and a historic landmark to visit if you are driving near Flagstaff.

Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch

If you are heading south near Picacho Peak, it is hard to miss the billboards advertising Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch. Seemingly the only place you can find stingrays, donkeys, deer, parrots and dozens of ostriches in the middle of nowhere, this roadside attraction is a great spot for adults and children to make memories.

Standin' on the Corner Park

You don't have to be an Eagles groupie to be familiar with the nod to this Arizona town in one of their most popular songs, "Take it Easy." "Standin' on the corner in Winslow, Arizona ..." is a line memorialized by Winslow residents at Standin' on the Corner Park. A bronze statue of a young musician is a salute to the troubadours who put Winslow on the classic rock map.

Without spoiling the enigma that can be uncovered in Benson, The Thing is a worthy roadside attraction to consider as you head down the I-10. The various billboards that line the highway are hard to miss as you get closer to the "Mystery of the Desert." Located next to a Dairy Queen and a Shell gas station, you can take care of your hunger, gas tank and curiosity at the same time.

Giganticus Headicus

Art is completely subjective. To Kingman residents, Giganticus Headicus is one of the most iconic art pieces off Route 66. Created by local artist Gregg Arnold, the tiki-style head is 14 feet tall and bright green. If taking a picture isn't enough, you can further memorialize your time with the head with a miniature from the local gift shop.

Wigwam Village Motel

Lumberjack muffler man

A familiar face to Northern Arizona University students, the 25-foot-tall muffler man resembles the school's mascot, Louie the Lumberjack. Before being moved outside of the Skydome, the lumberjack was located outside the Lumberjack Cafe and appeared in the background of the 1969 movie "Easy Rider."

Rainbow Rock Shop Dinosaurs

If you're in search of more prehistoric creatures to gape at, stop at the Rainbow Rock Shop as you drive along Route 66. Fans of geodes and other pretty rocks will be able to admire the variety of concrete dinosaurs while searching for their next gem.

Located near the Mexico border, Dateland is a necessary stop on Interstate 8. A major producer of the Medjool dates, the dry heat provides the perfect climate for cultivating the fruit. London Bridge

You don't need to travel across the world to experience a little European history. As a result of a strange series of events, the London Bridge , which once crossed the River Thames, was broken down and rebuilt in Lake Havasu City by Robert P. McCulloch. This British import attracts tens of thousands of travelers every year.

Take a break from speeding down the highway by cruising through the ponderosa pine forest. An attraction you don't need to get out of your car to enjoy, Bearizona has over three miles of road surrounded by picturesque nature and North American animals. If your legs need a break from sitting in a cramped car, the park also has a 20-acre walk-through area.

I was an adult before I learned of Michigan Central Station's ties to Black history | Opinion

It was June 1977, and 30 or so children had gathered at the entrance of the Michigan Central Station . 

I was one of them. 

As we entered, the wide-open space of the lobby was overwhelming to the group of 4-, 5- and 6-year-olds. Most of the shops were not open or operating, but the popcorn vendor was still there, and there was always the strong smell of popcorn. 

In 1988, the train station closed. After years of sitting empty, it will reopen on June 6. Many of us assumed it would never reopen. All it seemed good for was being used as the backdrop for disaster films, where it would get destroyed by large robots or superpowered aliens. I took the train from Detroit to Kalamazoo a few times when I was in college, boarding at a sad little trailer next to the once-majestic Michigan Central. I was always thinking about those trips in 1977, when I was 6 years old. Inside the station, we were placed in lines by the teachers and chaperones from Little Angels’ Nursery & Kindergarten, our Highland Park preschool. Once the train arrived, we boarded it in order, seated in pairs, near an adult. 

We were on our way to Ann Arbor to visit the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History.  We took this trip every year.  

And every year, I bought at least one of the rubber dinosaur figures from the gift shop — a triceratops one year, a T. rex or stegosaurus the next. 

We had lunch and played video games at Pinball Pete’s, and then we came back to Detroit. 

But the whole day would start and end at the Michigan Central Station, and it was as much a part of the field trip experience as the train trip, the museum and the arcade. 

Even as a preschooler, I was taught that the dinosaurs we saw at the museum lived long before us, and the significance of their impact on the world. 

But it would not be until I was near adulthood that I learned how important the history of the Michigan Central Station was to Detroit.

Boomtown Detroit  

In 1825, Detroit was becoming a boomtown.  

The Erie Canal opened, and shortly after, thousands of people began moving either to Detroit from New England, or through Detroit on their way to Chicago.  In 1831, the Detroit & St. Joseph Railroad was chartered as a new railroad company, with plans to connect Detroit to the west Michigan city of St. Joseph. By 1846, the company was operating as the Michigan Central Railroad, owned by John Murray Forbes and James Frederick Joy. By 1852, the new owners had completed the connection from Detroit to Chicago.  John Murray Forbes, a staunch abolitionist in the mid-1800s, was an ancestor of former U.S. Sen. and former Secretary of State John F. Kerry. The “F” in Kerry’s name is “Forbes.” 

James F. Joy is the namesake of Joy Road — the street that runs from Detroit to the city of Dexter. 

When the Michigan Central Railroad began operating in Detroit, it was immediately part of another railroad system.

The road to freedom 

The Underground Railroad was not really a railroad. 

Except when it was. 

In 1844, after learning their oldest child was going to be sold away, Adam and Sarah Crosswhite escaped from slavery with all four of their children. Assisted by Quakers and other abolitionists, the family eventually settled in Marshall, Michigan. 

In 1847, bounty hunters, assisted by the county sheriff, came to the Crosswhites’ home to return them to slavery, but a crowd of African American and white townspeople prevented them from doing so.  The Crosswhites were whisked away to Jackson, Michigan, and placed on the Michigan Central Railroad, heading to the Michigan Central Station, then located on Third Street and Woodbridge — today, that’s the West Riverfront Station of the Detroit People Mover. 

The Crosswhites would get on a ferry to Canada, and safety. 

A little over a decade after the Crosswhite Affair, in January 1859, 11 freedom seekers — one of whom was pregnant — escaped from slavery after radical abolitionist John Brown raided the farm where they were enslaved. 

Brown acted as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, taking the group to Chicago, where Allan Pinkerton assisted them by securing fares on the Michigan Central Railroad to Detroit, where they met Detroit Underground Railroad agents. 

There were now 12 of them. The pregnant woman had given birth. 

Pinkerton would one day become famous as a detective in the American West. 

John Brown would meet abolitionist orator and author Frederick Douglass in Detroit, and become famous for his raid at Harper’s Ferry later that year.

The new train station  

In 1866, an African American engineer began working for the Michigan Central Railroad. Born in Ontario, Canada, in 1844 to parents who escaped on the Underground Railroad, Elijah McCoy was trained in Scotland as an engineer. 

When he came back to the U.S., due to racial discrimination, this trained engineer was allowed only to be a lubricator and fireman on the railroad. He oiled the metal moving parts on the train, and shoveled coal into the locomotive’s furnace. 

Elijah McCoy would invent an automatic lubricator that could oil the train’s moving parts as it was moving, eliminating the need for trains to make frequent stops. 

This revolutionized the railroad industry. 

In 1884, a new and larger Michigan Central Railroad depot was built at Third and West Jefferson, not far from the former site of Joe Louis Arena. In 1913, that station was destroyed by fire. 

The new Michigan Central Station, at 14th and Michigan, was almost complete, and opened after the fire shut the old station down. 

It would become the main station for people coming to Detroit seeking employment and other opportunities during the auto industry boom. 

And it as the major entry point for the African American Great Migration.

A different kind of traveler

In those first years of the brand new Michigan Central Station, many African Americans were coming to Detroit, drawn by Henry Ford's offer of $5 a day in 1914. That same year, World War I broke out in Europe.When the U.S. entered the war in 1916, many factory workers enlisted. In 1917, the Selective Service Act went into effect, and many more workers were drafted into the military. 

They may have come to Detroit on the trains to achieve better lives and opportunities than what they had in the Jim Crow South, but now they were leaving Detroit on those same trains to go to military bases, that were located, in many cases, right back in the Jim Crow South. 

They were going to fight for freedom and for democracy. But the nation that was sending them to fight had done a poor job of ensuring that they received it here. 

Welcome to Detroit 

Ossian Sweet began his journey to Detroit in the summer of 1910, working as a dishwasher on Bob-Lo island, to help pay his way through Wilberforce College in Ohio. 

In 1921, Sweet had earned his degree from Howard University Medical School, and moved to Detroit, arriving at the relatively new Michigan Central Train Station. The shops would have been open, and the lobby busy with people coming and going. 

Within five years, Dr. Sweet and his family would become embroiled in a civil rights case that would change Detroit forever after they used firearms to defend themselves as an angry white mob attacked Sweet’s home. Sweet, his brothers, wife and friends were charged with murder. The charges were ultimately dismissed. 

While the Sweet trials were being fought in the courtroom, the Ku Klux Klan was flexing its muscles in the political arena — running Charles Bowles as a write-in Detroit mayoral candidate and lobbying the Michigan Legislature to pass a firearms registration law that they hoped would target African Americans who defended their homes with guns, like Dr. Sweet. 

But the KKK wasn’t silent in the South by any means. In Alabama, a gang of KKK members confronted Patrick Brooks and his wife, Lillie Barrow. Brooks, his wife and their children left Alabama on a train to Chicago. 

From Chicago, they got on the Michigan Central Railroad to Detroit.  

And arrived at Michigan Central Station. 

The beautiful lobby, with the 55-foot ceilings in the Beaux Arts style, was a powerful welcome to Detroit. 

And there were no “Colored” and “White” signs, either. 

One of the children of Lillie Barrow — and Pat Brooks’ stepson — was a 12-year-old named Joseph Louis Barrow. 

You know him as Joe Louis. 

Like many African Americans who came to Detroit during the Great Migration, the family lived in Black Bottom. Joe Louis would grow up to become heavyweight boxing champion of the world from 1937 to 1949. 

One more Detroit story 

In 1938, another Alabamian would come to Detroit, arriving at the Michigan Central Station. 

She was born and raised in Bessemer, Alabama, and after high school graduation, was ready to leave the Jim Crow South. 

She came to Detroit. 

Her name was Lucinda Ruffin. 

She met and married another Alabamian she met in Detroit, Moses Ross. 

She met him through his cousin, Iredia Vasser, a beautician, who was Lucinda’s best friend and fellow congregant at Chapel Hill Missionary Baptist Church on Joy Road and Grand River on Detroit’s west side. 

Lucinda Ruffin, who arrived to Detroit at the Michigan Central Train Station (she never learned how to drive a car), and Moses Ross had one child — Jacquelynne Iredia Ross. 

Jacquelynne Iredia Ross married a young man whose family came from Macon, Georgia, and who himself grew up in Black Bottom before it was demolished. 

His name was James Michael Jordan Jr. 

Jacquelynne and James had two children together — James Michael Jordan III and Jamon Jordan. 

The trip I’m dreaming about 

Within four years of being born, I was enrolled at Little Angels’ Nursery School, where I would take my first trip on a train. And by the time I was 6 years old, I was well-versed on not only the train, but the Michigan Central Station, the lobby, the ceiling, the people coming in and out, the ticket booth. 

And the popcorn. 

In 1988, the station closed. 

Throughout the '90s and early 2000s, there were plans to do something with the building, including turning it into the Detroit Police Headquarters or a casino. More than once, it was threatened with demolition.  

But in 2017, Detroit Homecoming was held there. The event invited former Detroiters back to celebrate their hometown. 

A year later, in May 2018, the building, along with the Albert Kahn-designed Roosevelt Warehouse (also known as the Detroit Public Schools Book Depository) was sold to Ford Motor Co. 

Ford announced that the site would be the center for the company’s autonomous vehicle production, and led the creation of Michigan Central, a hub for technology and innovation, now housed in the former book depository building. 

Newlab, a partner in the development, leads the mobility hub, and this is also where the uber-popular Black Tech Saturdays events have taken place. 

The city of Detroit and the state of Michigan are partners in the project, and one of the roads in the area is the first electric charging road in the country. You can charge your electric car while driving. 

The grand opening is June 6, six years after Ford bought the site. There will a concert, tours and other events at the celebration. 

Folks will come from all over to see this majestic building restored and reopened. 

Like so many people who either came to Detroit via the Michigan Central Station, or have heard the stories from their parents and grandparents, it is not only a National Historic Landmark.  

I know that it holds the stories of people coming here from the East Coast, of escaping the Jim Crow South, and, in its earlier manifestations, escaping slavery. 

And bringing families together. 

So, I’ll be at the opening thinking not only of what the building is now, but all the history it holds — including my family’s. 

But, I’ll also be thinking that maybe, just maybe, one day I’ll be able to get on a train there again, and go to Ann Arbor and buy me a rubber triceratops from the U-M Museum of Natural History. 

And I’ll be thinking about that popcorn smell.
