Established in 1855, the South African capital is studded with 19th-century buildings and renowned for the jacarandas that colour its streets purple in early summer.

Situated just 50 kilometres north of Johannesburg and connected to it by an ever-widening ribbon of urban development, Pretoria has been the political capital of South Africa since 1910. Yet the city remains in economic thrall to its brasher southern sibling. Easily accessed from OR Tambo International Airport, Pretoria is a popular alternative gateway to sites such as the Kruger National Park, Pilanesberg and Madikwe Game Reserve, and probably has more to offer than Johannesburg in terms of sightseeing for those spending a couple of nights in the area.

The Union Buildings, a handsome orange sandstone parliamentary building designed by prominent architect Sir Herbert Baker, are now best known as the site of Nelson Mandela’s presidential inauguration in 1994. Other landmarks include the unpretentious Kruger Museum, where Paul Kruger, state president of the South African Republic during the Second Boer War, lived in the late 19th century, and Melrose House, a period-furnished Victorian mansion where the treaty ending that war was signed. The city centre is very pretty in October and November when its famous jacaranda trees come into bloom.

6. Groenkloof Nature Reserve

If you want to become free from the busy town life then visit this nature reserve in Pretoria. You can have African tracks safaris in here and spend an hour visiting the nature and the animals in its own habitats. You will get to see zebras, giraffe, and springboks. Derived from the local language, Xitsonga, Tumbeta translates to ‘secluded hideaway’. This is a true  safari experience – Tumbeta Big 5 Game Reserve.

Off the beaten track and far from urbanisation, in an unspoilt area where the Bushveld meets the Kalahari and the sourveld of the Waterberg turns to sweet Bushveld in the Matlabas river valley, this is where you will find Tumbeta, a private South Africa Big 5 game reserve. This Malaria free reserve is only 3 hours from Pretoria in the northwest portion of the Limpopo province in South Africa.

Wildlife, from insects, to birds and plains game thrive in this area. Large herds of Sable and Buffalo are frequently seen. Predators, small and large are drawn to this rich ecosystem and we are privileged to share this land with them.

This 8000 hectare Big 5 game reserve near Johannesburg is home to over 300 bird species and 50 mammal species including Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Buffalo and both Brown and Spotted Hyena along with many others. The endangered White Back and Lappet-faced vultures nest on the reserve and raptors are prolific to the area especially in the summer months when they follow the nesting Red-billed Quelea flocks.

Our Conservation Story

A Conservation Area & Wildlife Reserve

Be part of our vision to create a new conservation area and South Africa Big 5 game  reserve only 3.5 hours from Johannesburg.

In brief, the strategy of Tumbeta Private Game Reserve was to purchase land previously used for hunting and agriculture and return it to conservation and tourism. Our conservation plans are not bound by the borders of the property and we are actively involved in initiatives to support conservation in the general area. One of our main objectives is to support the last free roaming predator populations in these areas by mitigating predator – farmer conflict and encouraging landowners to look at alternatives to destroying these endangered species.

Tumbeta Big 5 Game Reserve is situated in the remote North-western Limpopo of South Africa, an area which is largely a mix of hunting farms, game farms, private reserves and cattle farms. These areas are still rich ecosystems and home to large numbers of wildlife but the larger mammals and predators were removed through previous agricultural activities. We are looking to re-establish these larger mammals and predators and grow the reserve by incorporating more land. The long-term goal is a new and important conservation area in an area rich with biodiversity.

Several endangered species frequent the area, these include a number of raptors and vultures as well as pangolin and free roaming Cheetah and Wild dog.

TUMBETA FAMILY CAMP

There is currently only one lodge open to the public on the reserve and this is the Tumbeta Family Camp. Book this full camp with your own guide and chef at self-catering rates, or look at our full board options for smaller groups. 

The lodge is positioned in the heart of Tumbeta Big 5 Game Reserve with views over the surrounding plains and a small dam which attracts large amounts of game.

Luxury family unit

The lodge can cater for up to 24 persons maximum and the lodge facilities include 3 luxury family units which sleep up to 6 each and 3 two sleeper units.

The main lodge is large with 2 lounges, a private gym, a bar and large kitchen. It also includes the star gazing boma and waterhole braai area with large swimming pool and outside lounge.

Vultures & Raptors

Tumbeta Big 5 Game Reserve is home to breeding nests of the critically endangered Lappet face and White back vultures. Over 20 nesting sites of White backs have been seen on the reserve and each year chicks are successfully raised to maturity, adding to these vulnerable and threatened populations.

Saving South Africa’s last free roaming, endangered predators. These include Leopard, wild dog, brown hyena and Cheetah. The Waterberg district and northern and western Limpopo are home to the last free roaming wild dogs and a critically important Cheetah population.

Buffalo Project

As with any game reserve and conservation area, there are significant running costs. In order to help fund these expenses we have developed a Buffalo breeding project. In 2018 we introduced some of the finest disease-free Buffalo in the country to the reserve where they have been doing very well.

Dinokeng Game Reserve

The recently formed Dinokeng Game reserve is an 18 500 hectare conservancy consisting of a number of farms, game farms and small holdings in Gauteng – an easy hour’s drive of Pretoria and Johannesburg. Great general plains game viewing can be experienced, with the Big 5 present in certain sections. There are a variety of accommodation options in Dinokeng from very affordable self-catering camps to fully catered luxury lodges.

Welgevonden Private Game Reserve  

Welgevonden is located within a wilderness expanse of the majestic Waterberg Mountain range close to Johannesburg and Pretoria. Welgevonden means ‘well found’ which is a fitting description for this beautiful area which is made up rocky plateaus, open woodland and reclaimed farmland dissected by crystal clear streams and ravines. The 36 000 hectare malaria-free reserve is home to healthy numbers of wildlife, many of which have been recently re-introduced, including members of the Big 5. South Africa’s national bird – the blue crane – is a rare and special bird found on the reserve.

Marakele National Park

One of South Africa’s youngest national parks, Marakele (meaning ‘Place of Sanctuary’) is a stunningly picturesque park located in the Waterberg an easy three hour drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria. Today the wildlife species found in the park reflect what used to roam this mountainous terrain, including the Big 5. Of particular interest is the substantial Cape Vulture Colony, which can be viewed from the top of Marakele’s accessible mountains. A rudimentary road network exists within the park with the highlight being the extraordinary views from the top of the Waterberg Massif.

Madikwe Game Reserve

Situated approximately 4 hours from Johannesburg, the malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve is one of South Africa’s premier game reserves. Madikwe hosts a tremendous variety of habitat types which in turn result in an exceptional diversity of animal species. The Big 5 reserve hosts all the larger game species including a high density of lions, both black and white rhino, feisty elephant herds and Madikwe’s famed African Wild Dog packs.
