Acclaimed for its historical re-enactment of early Genesis, The Musical Box has performed for more than a million spectators worldwide in some of the most prestigious venues and will be at Playhouse Square on April 23 rd !

The Musical Box’s Tour Gives Genesis, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Deluxe Treatment

Beginning in early April 2022, the long-running Canadian rock band The Musical Box will hit the road again with a deluxe staging of the classic 1974 Genesis double- LP concept album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway .

This acclaimed Genesis legacy band – known for their authentic recreations of Genesis’s legendary live production from the early 1970s – plan on an extensive tour visiting close to 100 cities in North America, the UK and Europe. And the tour – launching soon, on April 7, 2022, in Sherbrooke, Quebec – will continue through February 2023.

Attending any Musical Box show – whether it be a production of The Lamb or others, such as Selling England by the Pound – is often described as stepping into a time machine. And this would be especially true of TMB’s Lamb re-enactments. Aside from the fact that the band and their production team are now using more reliable, state-of-the-art technology than clunky 35mm slide carousels and dodgy, old-school Mellotrons, the “look-and-feel” and sound of Genesis’s groundbreaking stage show are faithfully reproduced with painstaking detail and love for the music.

Having first emerged in the mid-1990s with full blessings from the extended Genesis family, the Montreal-based TMB tackled their first Lamb tour in 2000. This included set design, effects and costumes closely following those of the historic 1974-75 final Genesis tour with then-vocalist/frontman Peter Gabriel. And a centerpiece of TMB’s restored show was a similarly iconic, three-screen, rear- projection system for the original 1,200 35mm slide images from the Genesis days.

With exclusive licensing from Gabriel – the story’s principal lyrical creator and license holder – TMB have taken the surreal, shadow-musical world of The Lamb on tour a total of three times, performing more than 300-plus shows in the process. These included the debut 2000-2001 tour, plus two more lengthy tours in the 2004- 2006 and 2011-2013 time periods. Of course, during the prior and intervening years, the band has been continuously presenting other full Genesis albums and themed shows, including the cleverly-curated 2018-2021 musical showcases Genesis Extravaganzas, I & II .

Each time out with The Lamb was reportedly a learning experience, with TMB not only honing its renditions but also continuing to research historical/technical details to fine-tune the shows even more. Since no official films of ‘70s Lamb shows were ever captured, TMB have been especially fortunate to gain insights from archival photos and amateur 8mm films shared by fans.

For those unfamiliar with the dense, character-rich storyline of The Lamb , Gabriel himself has often described it as a morality tale – in his words, “a sort of Pilgrim’s Progress” – set in decidedly more “modern” times. The proverbial “hero” of this tale, named Rael, is a young, Latin-American rebel who leads a violent, hedonistic life on the mean streets and in the subways of New York City, only to suddenly end up going through “some things” himself. Karma, in other words.

Right from the start – when a giant “Wall of Death” descends upon Manhattan and sucks the hero into a subterranean world of shadows, tunnels, and cages – Rael meets assorted oddball characters and undergoes many soul-testing moments. Not unlike the character Ulysses in Homer’s famed epic The Odyssey , Rael must confront his own fatal character flaws and demons, and shed them one by one. In the end he comes to learn that empathy and sacrifice may be his only salvations.

Earlier in the 1970s Genesis had earned a reputation for a deeply fantasy-based style of progressive rock, with often long, complex songs, full of deep literary and mythical references, and even the odd sci-fi twist. To a certain extent this carried over to The Lamb , both Gabriel’s final album and tour with Genesis.

But, as reported out in Genesis fan world, the deeply impressionable Gabriel had been exposed to the controversial, midnight-art-house, acid-Western movie El Topo ( The Mole ) – itself a nightmarish tale of personal transformation – at some point during Genesis’s 1973 U.S. tour. And, at the same time, he had also observed things on American tours – perhaps even the emergent punk rock scene in mid-‘70s New York – that jarred and jump-started him into a new storytelling direction.

El Topo ‘s impact on Gabriel is not so hard to see when one learns that several of the film’s more bizarre elements and symbolism – such as a “grand parade” of meandering people, a pool of seductive women and an ominous raven – had mysteriously jumped the screen and re-surfaced in his lyrics.

So, yes, Gabriel soon began to conceive of a tougher persona, in grittier circumstances, and, thus, the Lamb’s lead character of the leather-jacketed, jack- knife wielding, priapic graffiti artist was born in his mind. In contrast Genesis bassist Mike Rutherford and keyboardist Tony Banks had proposed a lighter-weight option – a musical adaptation of the children’s book The Little Prince – which Gabriel dismissed out of hand as “too twee.”

As his fellow band members busied themselves with the writing of the instrumental music apart from Gabriel in mid-1974, the hallucinatory story of Rael percolated in his head and exploded in a torrent of emotion and psychological narrative that – even today – fans still strive to understand fully. (Even Gabriel continued wrestling with it. Years later, he had reportedly even explored tasking none other than El Topo’ s director Alejandro Jodorowsky with translating The Lamb to the Silver Screen, but the project did not proceed.)

To recreate the hard-to-nail, classic, electro-acoustic Genesis sound of 12-strings, double-neck guitars, and amply layered keyboards of The Lamb , TMB perform with the same vintage brands of guitars and amplifiers – but a few more modern keyboards – as Genesis had used. But the band’s current members also bring with them nearly a lifetime’s worth musical knowledge of performing the deep and varied Genesis songbook. And, better yet, they have a charismatic lead vocalist in the person of Denis Gagné, who convincingly conjures the shape-shifting figure and reedy, plaintive voice of the younger Gabriel in his travails as Rael.

Gagné is joined on stage by the four instrumentalists who provide the musical backbone for The Lamb production. These include bassist/founding member/musical director Sébastien Lamothe, lead guitarist François Gagnon, drummer Marc Laflamme, and keyboardist Ian Benhamou. In unison with the vocalist the four players follow the original Genesis arrangements, without substitution or modification, delivering them with all the passion, yearning, and irony inherent in the original lyrics, music, arrangements and recordings. Truly, every ingredient of the show – musical, technical and human – adds up to a sum greater than the whole.

Whether you’re a fan of the “Golden Age of Prog” who never got to experience the magic of the “Gabriel Years,” or even if you’ve seen The Musical Box before and can’t get enough of their crazy, musical “Wayback Machine,” then the upcoming  Lamb tour is one you will definitely want to plan on seeing. In fact, with TMB having logged so many Lamb performances along the way in their nearly-30-year career and Genesis fully retired from performing, this time around may very well go down as the final chapter in this epic musical adventure’s long and storied life.

As Rael himself declares in the concluding song of The Lamb story, “It is here. . . It is NOW!”

So true! Martin had his own Genesis cover band for the first couple of years after he left The Musical Box. I saw them perform the Encore Tour in Philadelphia. It’s AMAZING how closely he resembles Phil, both physically and vocally.

Well, I see some major differences here. Reproducing an old show accurately and therefore not changing anything is something else than revisiting the past and changing the setlist from tour to tour. Steve also plays his own stuff and new material from his recent studio albums.

I saw The Musical Box quite often and have always enjoyed it. I probably saw the Selling show the most, so I'll skip this time. But I really recommend this to everybody who hasn't seen this yet. Go. before they don't do it any more.

Tempted to go and see an accurate recreation of early Genesis , the first actual Genesis I saw was 1981. The trouble is with the wealth of live recordings available and U TUBE shows I've heard an awful lot of these songs lots of times. I feel the need to avoid them for quite a while for fear of over exposure to them , I really don't want to get tired of hearing them too often. Iqt go but will have avoid hearing any of that stuff between now and then.

I have seen the Selling show several times and most of those shows were years ago when YouTube wasn’t really an issue. I also can’t see why YouTube would keep you from going. Live is the real thing and YouTube comes never any close…

Yes I've decided to go. Live is of course totally different, it's just that because of the availability now I've watched and listened to those songs many times as well as Steve Hackett shows. I'm bothered about overexposure of songs that I've heard hundreds of times. I will make a point of not listening to any of it until I see it live in March .

It was a good gig so you chose well!

Speaking of being heard on a bootleg, when Musical Box came over on the tour where they played their favourite Genesis pieces (2018) I was a little worse for wear at the Hammersmith show and can be heard on the bootleg shouting for Invisible Touch during the intro to Cinema Show. Sorry fellow attendees.

I have been hearing about these guys from the early 90s. I have worked in the live music industry all my adult life. I have played drums since the 60s, and I was in a Pink Floyd Tribute band, also a Genesis Tribute band.I was working in a club near Chicago when a drummer from one of the top bands told me about the Musical Box in the early 90s. I was telling him about another Genesis tribute called Fayreweather that I had seen many times in the 80s. He said I should check out the Musical Box. Well I finally made it to their show in the Chicago area a month or so ago, and I was totally disappointed! The show lacked energy and power on all fronts. But the biggest problem I had was the drummer Antoine Baril. He was not the drummer that was with the band when my drummer friend in the 90s recommended them, and had he been he would not have. I have enjoyed his one man band YouTube videos, but was also cognizant that his weakest instrument from those videos was the drum parts. That said he was not the only one lacking, the whole band was lacking the spirit and power that is Genesis live.

Saw The Musical Box 'Extravaganza' show last night at The Danforth Music Hall. Another excellent show from these super-talented musicians.

This latest show is a 3-set performance with the first set from The Wind & Wuthering and Trick of the Tail albums. Standout for me in this set was Dance On A Volcano which was perfection. The second set was The Lamb Lies Down that started with the title track / Fly On the Windshield / Broadway Melody, and also did In The Cage, Carpet Crawlers, and Lilywhite Lillith. The final set was an homage to the earlier albums including Selling England, Foxtrot, Trespass and Nursery Chryme where they did a great assortment of the earlier songs including Firth of Forth, and a briliant version of Can-Utility and the Coastliners.

The show was phenomenal as usual with TMB, although this performance had less theatrics and props than they normally use, but instead clear focused on the musical performance which was stellar!

I've seen Steve Hackett do Genesis Revisited... I've seen the Carpet Crawlers doing the Lamb, and now I've seen The Musical Box. Quite frankly the attention to detail musically is exemplary. Yes, we may forgive some of the looseness of the waistbands that come with some of the more revealing costumes, but this gig was about the sound and the music. The Sage is a great venue, and frankly it was the best sounding amplified gig I've ever been to. Highly recommended outfit to see live, will be back next year to catch the Lamb...

This is the 4th time I've seen the Musical Box, 1st was in 2005 - Foxtrot, then in 2007 SEBTP, last year SEBTP and this one SEBTP although the 'BLACK SHOW" version that they did in the US.

I have seen the real Genesis, as many times, back in the 1970s and I have to say in my very heavy very humble opinion that they are truly the BEST Tribute Genesis Band, they performed exactly how Genesis did antics and all. It really does take you back to those days, just that the audience has a lot less hair, ha ha, me included!

The musical box was as good as ever. I've seen them many time. This time my son in law came with with and he had never seen them. He really enjoyed them and return next time they're around.

They have a new drummer since the last I saw them and he really fitted well playing all those Phil Collins fills.

All the details and all. 9.9/10 for me.

Recommend it any time.

A must-see for those Peter Gabriel Genesis era heads. Stayed true to every aspect. Close the eyes and you're instantly transported back to those glory days (open them, and be horrified at the grey balding old men, and wrinkled crones- not including me of course...)

Amazing show performed by excellent musicians. They authentically reproduced Genesis classics culminating in an encore of „Supper‘s Ready“. Fantastic atmosphere in the concert hall and brilliant performance from the band.

Absolutely brilliant band. Second time seeing them and I certainly plan on seeing them again. There was nothing notable bad about them at all and their recreation of Genesis's Gabriel era is so brilliant you'll be at the edge of your seat the whole time.

The eighth time we've seen this band. If you've never seen genesis, see this band. If you've seen genesis, see this band! they are incredible! We have seen genesis, and the musical box is better! Unbelievable musicians.

One of Canada's biggest stars is getting one of the country's highest honours.

Pop star Avril Lavigne has been named to the Order of Canada, a civilian honour that recognizes outstanding achievements and contributions to the country. Lavigne was announced by Governor General Mary Simon yesterday, amongst a list of 83 new appointees that includes scientists, economists, poets and activists.

Lavigne's appointment notice highlights her impressive commercial and artistic achievements, as well as her charity work. "With over 50 million albums sold worldwide, she paved the way for female-driven punk-rock music and continues to do so today," the notice reads, going on to mention her support of individuals living with disabilities and serious illnesses through the Avril Lavigne Foundation.

Lavigne is one of Canada's best-selling artists, with ten Juno awards to her name. The Order of Canada appointment comes as Lavigne is celebrating her successes with Greatest Hits , a new compilation released June 21 featuring platinum singles like "Complicated" and "Sk8er Boi" as well as her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 "Girlfriend."

The Canadian icon is also taking her hits on the road with a major tour , which kicked off in Vancouver in May and begins its second leg in Toronto on August 12, with a sold-out Scotiabank Arena show.

Beyond the charts, Lavigne helped pave the way for a punk-inspired vision of girlhood in the early 2000s, when most female pop stars were embracing a more traditionally feminine image. Lavigne's brash attitude and white tank top and tie combo cemented her as an icon for a generation of Canadian kids.

That influence has been recognized of late with Lavigne receiving recognition from Hollywood's Walk of Fame in 2022, Canada's Walk of Fame in 2023 and now the Order of Canada.

Lavigne wasn't the only musician recognized by the Order of Canada this week. Montreal singer-songwriter Daniel Lavoie was named an Officer of the Order, as were percussionist Beverley Johnston and conductor Kent Nagano.

Owen Riegling for Amazon Music

The Amazon Music Original finds the rising country star from Mildmay, Ontario taking on an Ontarian folk-rock classic.

One of Canada's best-loved bands is turning 40, and rising country star Owen Riegling is celebrating with a new tribute.

The Mildmay, Ontario singer has released a cover via Amazon Music of The Tragically Hip's "Bobcaygeon," celebrating the band's 40th anniversary.

Riegling, who was named an Amazon Music Breakthrough Artist To Watch for 2024, got his start playing covers in small town Ontario bars, and "Bobcaygeon" was one of his favourites to perform. The cottage campfire classic is one of The Hip's most famous, coming from their 1999 album Phantom Power.

Alongside the song, which is exclusively available on Amazon Music, Riegling has released a behind-the-scenes video of the recording process, where Riegling also describes his own songwriting process and what he loves about The Tragically Hip.

"I just try to write songs that are honest and true to my experiences growing up, and I think that is exactly what Gord [Downie, the late lead singer of The Tragically Hip] was doing as well, writing what he knows, and a lot of that is small town Canada, small town Ontario," Riegling says. "That's where the majority of the hardest working people in this country come from."

"Bobcaygeon" is named after the 3,500-person town of the same name, and sung from the perspective of a police officer falling in love, dreaming of quitting his job and reflecting on a white supremacist riot.

Riegling, who earlier this summer undertook a tour of Canadian small towns , will perform the cover live next week at Cavendish Festival in Prince Edward Island.

The Tragically Hip, meanwhile, have been celebrating their 40th anniversary in style this year as Record Store Day Canada ambassadors , releasing a live album of original recordings from 1993 as well as an upcoming deluxe edition of their breakthrough album, Up To Here.
