In this article, I will write about the air temperature in Thailand during the winter as well as other things to keep in mind when traveling to Thailand in the cool season. So, when is Winter in Thailand? Winter in Thailand starts at the end of December and continues until the end of March. By the meteorological calendar winter in Thailand starts either at 21st or 22nd of December and ends either on March 20 or March 21. Winter months in Thailand are November, December, January, February, and March.

It is more common to talk about Thai winter by using such term as cool season because winter in Thailand is nowhere near to cold and snowy winters elsewhere in the world.

As I have already mentioned the winter solstice in Thailand is on December 22 although the cool season in Thailand normally begins in November.

What Are The Winter Months In Thailand?

The winter months in Thailand are November, December, January, February, and March.

The good news is that in winter the sun is shining for an average of 8 hours a day. The sunniest months are December and January.

During December, January, and February there is almost no rain at all.

As the air temperature in winter cools off to around 27 °C (79 °F) and occasionally even lower, it is a very pleasant temperature for a perfect vacation in Thailand. Summer temperatures in Thailand are almost unbearable for first-time travelers to Thailand.

When Is Winter In Phuket Thailand?

Winter or the cool season in Phuket begins in November and ends in February. The average air temperature in Phuket during these months is 26.5 °C (79.7 °F)

Phuket has to be the best winter destination in Thailand. Just be aware of big crowds and high prices if you’re planning your travel during December and January.

Where To Spend Winter In Thailand?

Of course, most tourists head to Phuket. I would say that it is the best destination in Thailand for first-time travelers. It has beautiful scenery from the pictures that you’ve seen online, and everyone can find activities that are best suited to their taste. I guess there is no need for me to sell you the idea of going to Thailand as you have already made up your mind 🙂

Note that December and January is high season in Thailand. For tourists, it means paying more for everything. Flight tickets, hotels, restaurants, various services, and everything else will cost you more than it normally would.

To travel cheaper and to still get everything that Thailand has to offer I recommend visiting Thailand already in September or October.

I would say that November is the cheapest month to fly to Thailand. Note that September and October are the months when it rains the most – almost every day.

For me, it has never been a problem as I’ve noticed that it usually rains after 6 PM when it is already dark outside.

How To Dress For Winter In Thailand?

So, you’re planning to visit Thailand in the winter. Although the winter sounds cold, let me remind you that we’re talking about 27 °C (80.6 °F) here. Many travelers including myself would say that it is always summer in Thailand.

Nevertheless, depending on your destination and planned activities there might be situations where you would be happy to have a sweatshirt or a warm jacket with you.

I can think of at least two situations like that. First one is traveling to Northern Thailand. In Chiang Mai one the most popular tourist destination is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Its elevation is 1050 meters (3445 feet) above the sea level, but it is possible to go even higher. And believe me, if I say that on a rainy day in September it could get really cold up there. Also during the day.

Second is having a speedboat from Phuket to one of its surrounding islands. This article is written by Sandis Mukans from thailandtravelessentials.com. In winter the weather in Thailand is mostly sunny, but you might experience some showers. Because of the combination of wind and rain, it could get really cold on the speedboat.

What Is The Coldest Temperature Ever Recorded In Thailand?

On December 21, 2017, the air temperature in Doi Inthanon National Park decreased to -5 degrees Celsius, but apparently, it still has to be authenticated by the responsible institutions.

It means that officially the coldest temperature ever recorded in Thailand is -1.4 °C that was recorded in Sakhon Nakhon on January 2, 1974.

On January 23, 2014, the air temperature in Bangkok decreased to 15.6 °C. It was its coldest record in 30 years. That year the air temperature outside Bangkok dropped even lower. Sadly that year it took away the lives of 63 people.

Keep in mind that the temperature in Northern Thailand is always lower and you can actually notice it. Especially when visiting Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon National Parks. Usually, the difference is about 5 degrees Celsius.

I would definitely recommend packing a sweatshirt or a jacket and long pants if you’re planning a trip to such cities as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai and their surrounding areas.

No, Thailand does not have snow. It is unlikely if not impossible that you will see snow during your trip to Thailand.

Thailand is a Southeast Asian country recognized as a destination for tropical beaches, grand palaces, ancient ruins, and Buddhist temples . Thailand has a tropical climate with a distinct monsoon season, which means that whatever time of year you visit , it’s going to be warm, humid, and might even be wet.

There are three seasons in Thailand which can be described as the following: a cool season between November and February, a hot season between March and May, and a rainy (monsoon) season between June and October. Heat, humidity, and rainfall vary significantly, depending on where and when you’re traveling. 

Cyclone Season in Thailand

Cyclones, also called typhoons, typically affect continental Thailand. While Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia bear the brunt of these powerful storms from the Pacific, they still bring heavy rains. Thailand is typically prone to typhoons from June through December, although they are more common from September to November. Indian Ocean cyclones can occur year-round due to the warm sea but are most common between April and December. In general, Thailand is less affected by storms than its Southeast Asian neighbors.

Popular Areas in Thailand

 Chiang Mai and the rest of the northern region of Thailand enjoys cooler, milder weather throughout the year. During the cool season, average highs are around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius), and average lows dip down to 60 F (16 C). Temperatures can go even lower up in the mountains, making it the only region in Thailand where you’ll even need a sweater outside.

Travelers should keep in mind that hot season temperatures can easily hit above 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) or higher during the day. The weather doesn't cool off much at night, although higher elevations in some areas make it more bearable than in the rest of the country. In regards to inclement weather, the rainy season sees less rain here than in other parts of the country. Regardless, monsoon storms can still be dramatic and intense, especially during September, which is the rainiest month of the year.

The best time to visit Northern Thailand is between October and April, although travelers should keep in mind that this is the peak tourist season.

Bangkok and Central Thailand

Bangkok's three seasons all share one thing in common: heat. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Bangkok was 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius), and that was back in 1955.   Cool season temperatures are generally around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius), so it’s no surprise that it’s such a favorite time to visit.

During the hot season, visitors can expect highs to reach above 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius), with some sweltering days even hotter. If you’re visiting Bangkok during the warm season, make sure to plan activities around the weather, as the heat makes it difficult to walk outside for too long. For most of the rainy season, temperatures cool off by a few degrees, and storms only last an hour or two before passing. 

Tourist season is the highest in November through March for cities like Bangkok. Since the weather cools dramatically during December through February, travel is a bit more pleasurable during these cooler months.

The weather in Southern Thailand follows a slightly different pattern than the rest of the country. There’s no cool season, as temperatures only vary by about 10 degrees between the hottest and coldest months of the year. It's typically between 80 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (27 and 32 degrees Celsius) on average in cities like Phuket and the Central Gulf Coast.

The rainy season happens at different times on the peninsula, whether on the east or west side. If you’re in the west, where Phuket and other Andaman Coast destinations are, the rainy season starts earlier in April and lasts through October. If you’re on the east side, where Koh Samui and the other Gulf Coast destinations are, most of the rainfall happens between October and January.

Tourists most commonly travel to southern Thailand between November and February when the weather is cooler and drier. To avoid hot weather and monsoon season, it's recommended to visit during the more popular months.

Spring in Thailand

Early spring in Thailand is still considered the dry season in Thailand and is quite hot, with temperatures during the day regularly exceeding 95 F (35 C)—if not more. Humidity matches the temperatures, which means being outdoors can be almost unbearable for those who are sensitive to heat. Given the temperatures, May is among the most affordable months to visit Thailand.

What to Pack: Pack light, breathable clothing, preferably moisture-wicking. Spring is hot and wet, and you'll want to dress accordingly.

Summer in Thailand

Prepare yourself for more high temperatures in the summer, with the addition of heavy rains. Prices are cheaper for travel and accommodation during the summer, but temperatures are usually upwards of 96 degrees. June, for example, averages 90 F (32 F) with ocean temperatures of a balmy 82 F (28 C). Koh Samui is typically the warmest location during the summer months. If you're sensitive to heat or high humidity, these months are best avoided.

What to Pack: Like spring, summer in Thailand is scorching. In addition to comfortable clothing, you don't want to forget bug spray, sunscreen, and a good hat to protect you from the sun. Summer is also quite wet, making a lightweight poncho or raincoat an indispensable part of any traveler's wardrobe.

Fall in Thailand

While Thailand doesn't experience traditional fall, September marks the end of the rainy season. Luckily, temperatures begin to drop as well, averaging around 86 F (30 C). This is still considered the low season too, which means visitors will find uncrowded beaches and a warm sea. October is dry and pleasant as well, but this marks the return of tourists to the country. The rainy season ends for good in November, except for the southeastern part of the country.

What to Pack: In fall, you can begin to pack away your rain gear, but temperatures are still quite warm so dress accordingly.

Winter in Thailand

Winter is Thailand's most popular season for beach visits and sightseeing. The winter is dry and warm, with temperatures of around 86 F (30 C) in the south and as cool as 75 F (24 C) in the country's northern reaches. December and January are the country's most-visited months, but February is popular as well and still a great month for beach-going; water temperatures usually hover around 80 F (27 C).

What to Pack: Winter is Thailand's "coldest" season, but cotton and linen fabrics are still a must. In the country's northern more mountainous regions, a sweater or other light cover-up might come in handy for cooler nights.

Krabi is another must-see destination when you’re visiting during the Thailand winter months. With its stunning limestone cliffs and clear waters, it’s a great spot for rock climbing and snorkeling. Let’s start with the best beaches in Koh Samui .

These beaches are known to have tall skinny palm-fringed beaches and crystal-clear waters. Koh Samui is a tropical paradise. The island’s Chaweng Beach is a popular spot , with its bustling nightlife and water sports activities. For something quieter, Lamai Beach offers a more laid-back vibe.

I spent 2023 ringing in the New Year in Krabi on the main beach, and it was simply magical.

1. Clothing: Despite it being winter in Thailand the weather stays relatively warm so you’d want to stick with lightweight, loose, and natural fabrics like cotton or linen. The fashion in Thailand is very laid back, but remember, it’s important to dress modestly when visiting temples .

• Pack a few light tees and shorts for daytime exploring. I really like this type of fabric.
• For evenings, consider 3 pairs of shorts/skirts and 3 pairs of cute tank tops/shirts.
• Pack one pair of loose-fitting pants for temples, and for riding on scooters.

2. Swimwear: You can’t visit Thailand without taking a dip in its beautiful beaches or pools. Pack at least two bathing suits, so you always have a dry one handy. Don’t forget a towel and a thin cover-up for lounging by the beach or pool. On some of the more local beaches you see women in tee shirts and shorts swimming, so keep that in mind if you want to blend in.

3. Shoes: Comfortable footwear is a must. Slip-on shoes or tennis shoes are ideal for city exploring, while a pair of water shoes can come in handy for beach days or boat trips. And of course, a pair of flip-flops is essential for any tropical destination. If you plan on doing some hikes, you can get away with tennis shows in most places.

4. Outerwear: Even though it’s warm during the day, the temperature can drop in the evening. Pack a light sweater or sweatshirt to wear on cooler nights. A light rain jacket is also a good idea, as unexpected showers happen all the time in Thailand.

5. Accessories: A stylish hat and sunglasses are not only chic but also important for protecting yourself from the sun. A shawl can be useful for covering up when visiting religious sites, and it can double up as an extra layer for cooler evenings.

6. Essential Items: Don’t forget your bug spray and sunscreen . A water bottle is also essential to stay hydrated during your adventures. And remember, if you plan on doing any hiking or outdoor activities, dry sacks can be very useful for keeping your belongings safe and dry.

Planning a winter vacation to Asia? You’re probably wondering, does it snow in Thailand?

Winter in Thailand is characterized by mild temperatures and low levels of rainfall. So if you’re looking for a winter getaway, Thailand can be an excellent choice.

Some might even argue that the winter is the best time to travel to Thailand. From exploring its bustling cities full of nightlife and culture to lounging on some of its sun-drenched beaches, you won’t be short on things to do while visiting Thailand in winter. 

Instead of a white winter wonderland, that graces a lot of the northern hemisphere during the winter months, instead, you’ll get plenty of beautiful sights and cool breezes during this time of year.

So, Does It Snow in Thailand?

No. Technically, there’s no such thing as the Thailand snow season. 

The only exception was On the 7th January 1955, when Chiang Rai experienced a brief snowfall. It settled for about 14 hours before melting. This odd occurrence is the only officially recorded case of snow in Thailand. It lay for around 14 hours before melting.

The average temperature in Thailand during winter falls around 28 or 29 °C (low 80s °F) and with less humidity than other times of the year, the winter can be a perfect time of year to visit Thailand .

Does Thailand Have Winter?

Yes, but they aren’t really comparable to the chilly bitterness experienced by lots of Europe and North America during the winter months. 

You might be wondering does it get cold in Thailand in winter? The answer is not really. This is why Thailand is a great getaway for a winter vacation.

The rainy season in Thailand usually finishes by October, so the winter months are not only a more comfortable temperature, but the humidity is also lower.

Thailand in Winter by Region

The weather and temperature of the Thailand winter does vary based on region. For example, the North is a similar temperature but slightly wetter than the South of Thailand. 

The coldest temperature recorded in Thailand is Sakhon Nakhon in a mountain region in the Northeast of the nation. However, the overall coldest place is Doi Inthanon National Park in the Northwest. Doi Inthanon temperature can drop below freezing. Despite the air temperature, Doi Inthanon snow isn’t really a thing, although on occasions there are reports of hail and sleet.

The islands benefit from less temperature fluctuation between summer and winter thanks to the sea keeping it at a more consistent temperature.

Bangkok in Winter

You wouldn’t exactly be able to argue that there is cold weather in Bangkok in winter season. Even the coldest months are pleasantly warm compared to many other places in winter.

The typical Bangkok winter temperature by month are as follows:

• November temperatures fall between  24° – 32°C and typically have 5 days of rain
• December temperatures fall between 22° – 32°C and typically have 0 days of rain
• January temperatures fall between 22° – 32°C and typically have 1 day of rain
• February temperatures fall between 24° – 33°C and typically have 1 day of rain

In fact, the winter is one of the best times to visit Bangkok’s top tourist attractions .

Phuket in Winter

The wintertime benefits from some of the best weather to visit Phuket . Although the temperature is daily constant all year round, the fewer rainy days in the winter months mean that November to January is potentially the best time to go to Phuket.

The typical Phuket winter temperature by month is as follows:

• November temperatures fall between 25° – 32°C and typically have 14 days of rain
• December temperatures fall between 24° – 32°C and typically have 8 days of rain
• January temperatures fall between  24° – 33°C and typically have 4 days of rain
• February temperatures fall between  25° – 34°C and typical have 2 days of rain

Chiang Rai in Winter

By visiting during the winter months, you’ll be glad to hear you avoid the humidity and rainy season in Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand.

The typical Chiang Rai winter temperature by month is as follows:

• November temperatures fall between 17° – 29°C and typically have 4 days of rain
• December temperatures fall between 14° – 27°C and typically have 1 day of rain
• January temperatures fall between 13° – 28°C and typically have 1 day of rain
• February temperatures fall between 14° – 31°C and typically have 0 days of rain

Thailand Winter Temperature by Month

By planning a winter vacation to Asia , you could benefit from fabulous weather. 

The best time of year to travel to Thailand is during the winter months when temperatures are mild and there are fewer rainy days. December, January and February are great months to visit Thailand as you’ll dodge the wet season. 

I’ve done two separate trips to Thailand, one of them during the rainy season! Every day monsoon-like downpours would last for a couple of hours at a time. Twinned with the warm air, this made the atmosphere very sticky, close and insanely humid. 

It felt like a tropical sauna at times and found myself seeking respite in air-conditioned cafes or museums to dodge it. It certainly ate into a chunk of tourist time each day waiting for the weather to clear up. 

Weather in Thailand in November

The weather is warm but still mild, with temperatures rarely exceeding 30°C. There’s very little rain, compared to the wet season, so you can avoid the worst of the humidity and stickiness associated with it. Plus, there are fewer crowds as many visitors often wait until December for the holidays.

Weather in Thailand in December

In December, temperatures remain mild but the humidity drops significantly. Without the rain of the wet season, tourists can enjoy slightly better weather than in November. The combination of mild weather and low humidity provides a great opportunity for outdoor activities, such as visiting Thai temples and outdoor activities. 

Weather in Thailand in January

January is usually the coldest month in Thailand. The weather of Thailand in January sees temperatures averaging between 22-25°C and lower humidity. The amount of rain decreases again, and the days are much drier and more comfortable. This is a great time to explore the country’s many attractions as there are fewer crowds than in December. 

Weather in Thailand in February 

The dry season continues with mild temperatures and lower humidity. It’s the perfect time to enjoy many outdoor activities, including exploring Thai temples and beaches. The temperature averages between 22-25°C, making it an ideal time to travel and experience everything that Thailand has to offer.

The best time to visit Thailand is generally from November through February. During this period, temperatures are mild and humidity levels are lower.
