Troubleshooting, how to turn off address bar color effect in safari for iphone & ipad.

Safari Icon

Safari for iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 received a pretty significant visual overhaul, and one very obvious change is that the Safari browser screens tab bar and navigation/search bar now have a color effect that tints the Safari interface towards the color of the webpage in view.

If you’d like to disable the Safari color tinting effect on iPhone or iPad, you’ll find it’s easy to do so.

How to Turn Off Safari Color Tinting on iPhone & iPad

The color tab bar feature are in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 or later, earlier versions will not have the settings option:

  • Open the Settings app on iPhone or iPad
  • Go to “Safari” settings
  • Uncheck the option for “Allow Website Tinting” (iOS) or “Show Color in Tab Bar” (iPadOS)

Disable Safari tinting color effect on iPhone and iPad

  • Return to Safari to find the color effect disabled

You can reverse the change at any point by re-enabling the tinting option in settings, if you want to have the color back.

Disabling the color effect and moving the Safari Search/URL bar back to the top of the screen are the two most obvious ways to make Safari more closely resemble how it used to, and some users who are creatures of habit or who simply don’t like the user interface changes may be happy to ditch the color and put the URL bar where it has always been – at the top of the iPhone screen.

This obviously focuses on the iPhone and iPad, but you can also disable the color effect for the Safari tab bar on Mac if you’re not a fan of it there either.

What do you think of the color effect in the Safari tab / toolbar? If you have a strong opinion on the matter one way or the other, let us know in the comments.

It seems completely pointless and it’s sometimes worrying. If turns red or orange it looks like a warning.

this strikes me as a change just for the sake of saying that something has changed. Apple is clearly grasping at straws to make “improvements” on products that are near optimal. Perhaps they should take the advice of “Don’t just do something, just put your hands in your pockets and hold still.”

I do not like the colored tabs in Safari on my Mac at all. Please update your article to include how to disable the feature on Mac. I saw another’s comments and your reply on how to do this, but others may not scroll down to see it. Thanks!

I cannot understand how Apple came to add these garish colors, a total reversal of the flat theme of recent years. Oh I do miss Steve Jobs.

Absolutely weird how Apple added these garish tints – total reversal of flat elegant visuals these last few years.

Best tip ever

So how does one: “you can also disable the color effect for the Safari tab bar on Mac if you’re not a fan of it there either.”

You can disable the same feature in Safari for Mac by going to Safari menu > Preferences > Tabs > Show color in tab bar. We’ll cover this in another article shortly.

thanks for your prompt reply

My browser went from white with black print to black with white print. I hate it. I read what to do (I have iOS 15.4.1) but after going to safari in settings there isn’t the options listed to uncheck. Thoughts?

How to Enable Safari Dark Mode

What to Know

  • Turning on dark mode in system preferences will enable the mode for compatible websites.
  • If a website has a  Reader  button on the left side of the search field, click it to go dark.
  • Use a Safari extension to enable dark mode on all websites. We recommend Night Eye and Dark Reader

This article covers three options to enable and disable Safari's Dark Mode on your Mac: via system preferences, by using Safari Reader View and using a browser extension.

How to Turn on Safari's Dark Mode via MacOS

At night, black text on white backgrounds is particularly tough on your eyes. It's very simple to switch on Dark Mode for your Mac. It doesn't just turn on Dark Mode for Safari, it does so for all your apps but that's perfect for protecting your eyes late at night or in dim lighting conditions.

Dark Mode is only available in macOS Mojave or later.

Click the Apple icon on the top left of your screen.

Click System Preferences.

Click General .

Click Dark .

If you want the dark appearance to only appear at night, you can click Auto for it to automatically adjust as the day progresses.

All websites that have been designed to support Dark Mode will now show in a darker form than before.

How to Switch off Safari Dark Mode

Switched on Dark Mode and realized you don't like it? It's simple to switch it back off.

As above, click the Apple icon on the top left of your screen and then choose System Preferences > General .

Click Light .

MacOS and Safari will now return to the light background permanently until you choose to switch it over again.

How to Use Safari Reader View to Turn on Dark Mode

Depending on the website you're viewing, the only thing that may go dark with MacOS's Dark Mode is the buttons and menus around the website. To ensure the site goes fully dark to protect your eyes, you need to use Safari's Reader View.

Safari Reader View only works on certain websites. Often, this is restricted to blog posts and other text-heavy websites. It's worth using when able to though.

On the website you want to view, click the Reader button on the left side of the search field.

This only appears on websites that support Safari Reader View.

Click the letter button on the right side of the search field.

Click the black background to change the background color.

You can also adjust font size and font choice here.

The background has now been changed to a dark one with white text.

Click away from the article to revert back to the original look or press the Escape key on your keyboard.

How to Use a Dark Mode Extension in Safari

The above solutions work only on a limited number of websites. If you want to enable Dark Mode for every website, you need to use a Safari extension. Many of these cost money but they can be useful. We recommend using either Night Eye which is free but limited or paying a one-off fee for Dark Reader. The process is the same for both extensions.

Install either Night Eye or Dark Reade r from the Mac App Store .

Open Safari then click Safari > Preferences .

Click the Extensions tab.

Check the box next to your newly installed extension to enable Dark Mode.

Both of these extensions should convert the vast majority of websites to Dark Mode as and when you need it.

If you spend a lot of time on your iPhone or Mac computer reading articles on the web, chances are that your eyes will hurt after sitting in front of the screen for several hours. Bright light and small font lead to eye strain, headaches, and decreased focus.

How To Enable Dark Mode on Safari

Windows users have had the Dark Mode for a long time, and now it’s finally available for Safari users on iOS devices. You can get an extension for your Safari browser and read articles all night. Read on and learn how to activate Dark Mode on your iOS device.

Safari’s Native Dark Mode Function

Safari (even older versions) already has a built-in dark mode feature. This function won’t work for every website because it’s meant to help ease the strain on your eyes while reading.

Users who are running a newer version of macOS can follow these steps:

safari search bar dark

If you don’t have the option to use Dark Mode, you can use ‘Reader View’ within Safari. Here’s how you can use the Reader View to darken your screen:

safari search bar dark

If you don’t see the Reader tab, you can find it by clicking View and selecting Show Reader .

Of course, this won’t work for every web page. It will work for any blogs or articles you’re trying to read, so we have a few more options listed below.

Safari Dark Mode

Night Eye for Safari

This extension is another download available in the App Store for Safari’s lack of dark mode options.

safari search bar dark

Although this app is free to download, it will cost you $39.99 per year to use it. The free option, ‘NightEye Lite,’ will limit you to five websites. This is perfect for someone looking to activate only a handful of pages. The extension offers full image support and the ability to use the features on multiple platforms.

Download Night Eye for Safari

Visit your Mac’s App Store and download the extension.

safari search bar dark

Activate the Extension

Tap on the Night Eye extension and choose the dark mode option. If there’s a website, you’d like to view without dark mode, simply tap the extension again and choose “Normal.”

safari search bar dark

With great reviews and the 24/7 support team, this is definitely an add-on worth looking into.

Nightlight for Safari

Another great option available for Safari is the Nightlight browser extension . The extension is free and available for those using macOS 10.13 or later. This is an Excellent, lightweight addition to your browser.

safari search bar dark

With the optional timer settings, you can enjoy dark mode on Safari without ever having to toggle it on and off. The nightlight will automatically shift the color patterns when at night, then back again during the day.

Using Dark Mode in Safari on iPad and iPhone

On the iPad and iPhone, Safari comes with a built-in reader mode designed to ease the pressure on your eyes during night reading. Here is how to activate it.

safari search bar dark

Repeat the process for every website you want to read in dark mode.

Dark Mode on macOS Mojave & Catalina

Most Mac users had to wait for the macOS Mojave update to be able to activate the dark mode on their computers. Previous versions had to use shortcuts, and you had to make exceptions for every site you wanted to view in dark mode. So, if you have Mojave installed on your Mac, follow these steps to set the dark mode up.

safari search bar dark

  • Select “Dark” in the “Appearance” options, and all websites on your Safari will switch to a black background.

Dark Mode and Other Apps

You can use the Dark Mode for other apps, not just your Safari browser. If dark mode is enabled, some apps will automatically have it activated. Here is a short how-to on toggling it on and off for the most popular apps on iOS.

Maps – If you want to use a dark background for maps with the Dark Mode activated, open the app and select “View,” and then select “Use Dark Map.”

Mail – If you want to use light mode when reading your emails, open your Mail and select “Mail,” then “Preferences.” Click on the “Viewing” tab and uncheck “Use dark backgrounds for messages.”

Notes – Your Notes will open with a black background if the Dark Mode is activated. You can disable it by selecting “Preferences” and then deselecting “Use dark backgrounds for note content.”

TextEdit – You can switch to the Dark Mode when working in TextEdit by selecting “View,” then “Use Dark Background for Windows.”

Safari – With the Dark Mode turned on; all websites will show as dark when you load them. If some website doesn’t support Dark Mode, you can use Safari Reader.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to more of your questions about Apple Dark Mode.

Can I use Dark Mode with Chrome on a Mac?

Yes, but unfortunately, it isn’t an option provided natively. This means you’ll need to use a Chrome browser extension like the ones we’ve mentioned above. If you follow the steps above to activate Dark Mode on your Mac, it will have no effect on third-party apps and browsers such as Firefox or Chrome.

Can I enable Dark Mode with Mozilla Firefox on my Mac?

Fortunately, yes! Firefox makes many things simpler than other web browsers, and Dark Mode is one of them. Enabling Dark Mode on Firefox is the same on a Mac or a PC. All you need to do is click on the three horizontal lines in the upper right-hand corner of the browser. Then, click ‘Add Ons.’ From here, you’ll see a Themes option on the left; click it, then click on one of the options in the list that gives you Dark Mode.

There are several different color variations, so choose one that you like. Now, the Firefox system will show in Dark Mode, but not all of your websites will, so you may need to enable Night Eye for Mozilla or another add-on.

Ease the Strain on Your Eyes

Reading texts all night long can cause migraines, sore eyes, and unpleasant muscle strain; switching to Dark Mode is a great option. Your eyes will be grateful, and you will be able to focus for longer periods. Who doesn’t want to increase productivity while keeping themselves healthy?

Google app puts search bar at the bottom of its browser.

Avatar for Abner Li

The Google app on Android is showing a persistent Search bar at the bottom of any web result or Discover article you open.

You’ll find an “Ask anything” Search bar at the bottom of the Chrome Custom Tab. The four-color ‘G’ — which appears misaligned and too close to the edge to my eye — appears first, with the microphone and Lens buttons appearing at the right.

Tapping simply takes you to the fullscreen Search page with previous queries listed and other suggestions as you type.

  • Related : Chrome rolling out ‘Listen to this page’ TTS on Android

The bar obviously decreases how much of the webpage you can see, but it’s not significant. (In the case of our site, you miss out on the first paragraph.) It comes as those that have “AI tools while browsing” enabled in Search Labs get a different kind of bar with a slightly greater space reduction. However, we’re no longer seeing that active with the bottom Search field. For those that use the feature, open the overflow menu for “View page insights.”

safari search bar dark

Besides encouraging more queries, this could be a precursor to the Search bar moving to the bottom in the main screen of the app.

We’re seeing this across several devices, including tablets, after updating to the latest Google app beta (version 15.24) today.

iPadOS 18’s new tab bar for apps is more powerful than it first appears

Avatar for Ryan Christoffel

One of the few iPad-centric features highlighted at WWDC was a redesigned tab bar for apps. iPad apps have historically used a similar tab bar to what’s found on the iPhone, with different tabs accessible from the bottom of the screen.

iPadOS 18 changes that with a new tab bar UI that floats at the top of the screen.

The new tab bar also comes with a secret weapon: you can customize it to add the menu options you care about most.

Customizing an app’s tab bar in iPadOS 18

To customize an app’s tab bar in iPadOS 18, you take a few simple steps:

  • Long-press on the tab bar at the top of the screen
  • Identify the highlighted menu items from the sidebar menu that appears—only highlighted items are able to be added to the tab bar
  • Drag your desired items out of the sidebar and on to the tab bar to add them there

Now, the tab bar will provide quick access to the areas of the app that you deem most important.

There are a couple limitations worth noting when customizing the tab bar:

  • Certain items cannot be removed from the tab bar if they’re deemed ‘core’ to the app’s UI—an example is the Today tab in News
  • Not every app with the new tab bar supports customization—only those featuring an accompanying sidebar

On this latter point, the App Store app is an examples where you can’t change the tab bar, because there is no sidebar in the app and thus no additional menu options to choose from.

Apple News, on the other hand, does have a sidebar and so you can customize its tab bar using some of those sidebar options. Note that currently in developer beta 1, there are some inconsistencies such as the Files app having a sidebar, but not yet having a customizable tab bar. Hopefully that will change during the beta cycle.

Apple may not have had a lot of iPad-focused updates to talk about at WWDC, but between customizable tab bars and a valuable new Files feature , iPadOS 18 does include some nice improvements for iPad power users.

'Chef's Table' Subject's Latest Restaurant Closes: Sean Brock's Bar Continental Shuts Down in Nashville

The Nashville addition just couldn't compete with the busy nightlife it seems.

By Andrew Roberts - June 15, 2024 09:14 pm EDT

Netflix's Chef's Table featured Sean Brock and his restaurant Husk in Charleston, South Carolina during its sixth volume released in February 2019. While that bar is still a success, the chef's venture in Nashville has shuttered only seven months after opening.

According to Nashville Business Journal , Brock's Bar Continental has shuttered . The hi-fidelity record bar and lounge seemed perfect for the city on paper, but it has sadly reached its end.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bar Continental (@barcontinentalhifi)

"While I'm disappointed to be ending its run, I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to share this with Nashville," Brock said in a statement posted to the restaurant's Instagram. "We're hopeful the concept can live on in a different way in the future, but for now, I want to say thank you."

The now-closed restaurant was located in the Nashville Yards' Grand Hyatt hotel, which now has some sort of plan for a replacement in the space. "Sean is a brilliantly creative chef, experimenting with fun, out-of-the-box concepts and culinary delights. We are proud to have supported one such concept, Bar Continental," Marc Sternagel, general manager for Grand Hyatt Nashville, said in an emailed statement. "We are evaluating several exciting options for this fantastic space and look forward to sharing more in the near future."

Brock is far from down and out with this closure. He has been re-evaluating a lot of his offerings in the city for 2024. Nashville Business Journal notes that Brock opened an affordable experience at the East Nashville tasting menu restaurant in June. He is also aiding Nick Pihakis and Paul Mishkin in creating an old-school burger joint named Joyland. The launch there is eyeing Birmingham and beyond if it is a success.

The chef is dedicated to Nashville, though, with his June and Audrey restaurants scratching his itches, while Joyland is looking to expand his offerings even further.

  • Need 1 or more tabs open already then open a new tab
  • Tab Mode in Preferences has to be "Compact". "Separate" mode doesn't have this behavior.
  • Seems to require the Favorites bar to be visible as well. If the search bar is white as in this screenshot and then Favorites bar is hidden (e.g. with keyboard shortcut shift-command-B) the search field will flip back to dark mode.
  • Might have something to do with my Search preferences, not sure. (I have every option in there turned off.)
  • Doesn't happen in Private Browsing mode which uses a different color anyway (search field is black as opposed to grey)

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

safari search bar dark

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

safari search bar dark

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

safari search bar dark

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

safari search bar dark

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

safari search bar dark

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

safari search bar dark

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

safari search bar dark

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

I have tried changes accent and highlight colors in system preferences, doesn't help.

Tried changing settings in Accessibility, again the address and search bars stay the same useless gray.

  • New Safari Mojave Dark Tabs Anyone else having issues with Safari Dark Mode tabs not being easy to identify? For any of us who have multiple tabs open, just highlighting the name of the website is not enough to distinguish the open window. The tab either needs to have an option for color highlight or to be a lighter color overall. Currently it's a time suck and terribly annoying. How do we make this change request to Apple where they will see it to consider the change? 1067 3

There are no built in settings you can change other than what you said you've tried. The GUI would have to be re-coded by Apple.
