Top 10 Best Star Trek Female Characters, Ranked From Romulans to Illyrians

Image of Dennis Limmer

It’s not easy coming up with the  best Star Trek female characters , because there are so many to choose from. We wish we could name every one of them since there have been amazing female characters throughout the original Star Trek series, The Next Generation, and the recent Strange New Worlds. But this bodes well for the franchise, providing an excellent balance between male and female characters that’s helped elevate Star Trek beyond the confines of any world. Without further ado, let’s check out the list.

10. Romulan Commander

star-trek-romulan-commander

The first time the Federation’s deadliest enemy was introduced was in the original series episode The Enterprise Incident. Kirk gives in to his daring nature and takes his Enterprise ship into Romulan territory, where he encounters a squadron. What makes this character even more significant is the fact that she remains unnamed to this day and yet is such an important milestone for Star Trek canon and history.

While Kirk attempts to gather intel on the Romulans, the commander is fascinated by Spock and tries to persuade him to join her. It becomes apparent she might have a romantic inclination toward him. After inviting Spock to dinner, she explains how Romulan women are passionate when compared to logical Vulcan women. Spock is put on edge, but resists her offer and maintains his loyalty. All along, Spock was helping Kirk steal the invaluable cloaking device to help advance the Federation’s technology. At the end of the episode, the Romulan commander is captured aboard the Enterprise and held as a prisoner. In a moment of privacy, Spock admits that his romantic interest in her was not pretended.

9. Philippa Georgiou

star-trek-Philippa-Georgiou

Georgiou is a Malaysian human who became one of the Starfleet Academy’s most decorated officers and the captain of U.S.S. Shenzou. During a routine activity, her crew encountered the hostile Klingon Empire and things quickly escalated into an event known as the Battle at the Binary Stars before becoming the catalyst to the Klingon-Federation War. Georgiou lost her life to the leader of the Klingons, T’Kuvma, as she tried to capture him on his ship in an attempt to prevent the war. She is a smart and driven commander who will go down in Star Trek history for her sacrifice.

8. Elizabeth Shelby

star-trek-elizabeth-shelby

Commander Elizabeth Shelby has a bit of notoriety to her name, mostly owing to her rivalry with Commander William T. Riker. After confidently believing she would replace him as Captain Picard’s first officer, Riker didn’t take too kindly to her after his promotion to commander of U.S.S. Melbourne. To Shelby’s chagrin, she ended up becoming Riker’s first officer. Elizabeth has a similar personality to Admiral James T. Kirk in that she is a risk-taker when the greater good is involved.

As such, she ended up going over Riker’s head when leading an away team to investigate a Borg attack, and went so far as to lead another team to rescue Picard when the Borg kidnapped him. She eventually moved up the ranks to be a commanding officer herself, and it would be great to find out more about her in future shows.

7. Deanna Troi

star-trek-deanna-troi

Deanna Troi is a standout character not just due to her exoticness, but also because of her half-human, half-Betazoid hybrid race. This mixed-race is what gave her telepathic abilities (though decreased in their effectiveness), and those powers were perfect for the crew’s counselor. She brought prominence to this Starfleet position and proved the most valuable assets to have in space are communication and empathy.

On many occasions, her abilities helped smooth things out during turbulent encounters, and she survived many different scenarios including being surgically altered, impersonating Romulans, and figuring out when others were lying. Deanna eventually married Riker and did more than enough to secure her legacy in Star Trek canon and history.

6. Michael Burnham

star-trek-MICHAEL-BURNHAM

Michael has great importance to Star Trek canon, bringing more diversity while also being the main protagonist on the Star Trek: Discovery series despite not acting as the captain. Her story overshadows her captain Gabriel Lorca, and while she served under Captain Phillippa Georgiou, she would commit mutiny and injure Phillippa in order to force the U.S.S. Shenzhou to preemptively attack the Klingons. After being a part of the Klingon-Federation war’s inciting incident, Captain Lorca reduced her sentence since he wanted crew members dedicated to defeating the Klingons.

Her backstory is unique in that she was a human raised by Klingons, and none other than Spock’s father, Sarek, specifically. Not a typical Star Trek character, Michael is a complicated woman, most likely created under modern characterization precepts, and it will be interesting to see how her story develops.

5. Beverly Crusher

star-trek-beverly-crusher

Talk about an intimidating name. Beverly Crusher is an all-around amazing female character, and not at all an aggressive one like her last name might suggest. She served as the chief medical officer on both Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E, and was a main crew member on Star Trek: The Next Generation. She was also a loving mother to Wesley Crusher and after her husband’s tragic passing, developed a close bond with Picard that blurred the lines between friendship and romance.

Beverly Crusher is controversial in that many wished she was further developed than what was allowed on screen in the Star Trek the Next Generation shows and movies. Her closeness to Picard also rallied fans to request her to have a main role in the Picard series, and many non-canonical books were written about the pairing, and the life they share together, along with their son.

4. Seven of Nine

star-trek-seven-of-nine

Seven of Nine’s name should state the obvious; there’s nothing quite like her. Although human, she was a former Borg drone, meaning she was part of the Borg Collective until she was liberated by Kathryn Janeway and her U.S.S. Voyager crew. As an assimilated Borg, she was taken by them and enhanced with cybernetics. In the case of Seven of Nine, or Annika Hansen, she was abducted at the age of six and dubbed Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero One.

After her complex and traumatic upbringing, she becomes nuanced and complicated aboard the U.S.S. Voyager. She brings many deep, dramatic, and thematic elements to Star Trek, portraying a character that demands respect, patience, and understanding. After all, consider the fact that she was kidnapped as a child, forced to become a Borg drone, and then has difficulty assimilating with her human peers (let alone other races), while also having to suppress an urge to rejoin the Borg. For the show, she brought plenty of tense moments, as well as emotional scenes, funny moments, and butt-kicking action.

3. Nyota Uhura

star-trek-nyota-uhura

Uhura has seen different incarnations throughout the various Star Trek series and movies, and Strange New Worlds has really taken her to the next level. Her latest on-screen portrayal brings a balanced sense of vulnerability, strengths, weaknesses, and backstory. Although she begins as a communications officer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, she eventually achieves the rank of commander of the U.S.S. Leondegrance for her remaining services to the Starfleet.

She can also be considered the first true standout female character or lead and deserves it completely. Uhura brings a great amount of diversity and unique themes to explore. As the expert linguist on her crew, and with her potential to grow, we’re looking forward to seeing more of her on a regular basis.

2. Number One / Una Chin-Riley

star-trek-una-chin-riley

As her designated name states, Number One is the first officer to Pike, and ranks just shy of the number one spot on this list. In the original series, she was only referred to as Number One but was later named Una Chin-Riley in several non-canon Star Trek novels. It’s great how Strange New Worlds finally solidifies her name as canon. Also in the new series, Una is given a more involved role and is attached to a key plot involving Pike’s destiny. Since she’s an Illyrian, she’s genetically modified, which is also why she looks like a human, while her kind normally does not.

From the beginning of the Strange New Worlds series, Starfleet makes it clear that they are anti-genetically modified beings. This puts her in a terrible position, and in direct defiance of Federation law. Regardless, she’s already had spotlight episodes where she’s saved the crew from a deadly virus, and has special empathy when it comes to forming bonds with fellow crew members. The fact that she risks it all to help her crewmates and perform her duties to better mankind makes her all the more compelling and one to root for.

1. Kathryn Janeway

star-trek-kathryn-janeway

Kathryn Janeway is an iconic female character that hasn’t received as much attention as she should, especially in recent Star Trek lore and media. In Starfleet history, she remains one of the most highly decorated captains and is notoriously known for her obsession with coffee. On a more serious note, one of her most notable accomplishments is how she took command of the U.S.S. Voyager as it made its way through the dangerous Delta Quadrant, which is home to the Borg Collective. Thanks to her leadership, the Voyager was able to bring the crew safely back to earth through a Borg transwarp conduit.

Her time as a commander also gained her another milestone which she achieved during her space exploration. It’s been estimated in various episodes how she’s made first contact with more alien races than James T. Kirk. She eventually gets promoted to the rank of Admiral after helping prevent another technologically advanced species from the Delta Quadrant, the Vau N’Akat, from destroying the Federation. To top it off, she defeated the Borg Queen and has a diverse background full of hobbies, passions, and scientific skills. Most of all, she comes across as being a balanced leader; one who is smart, decisive, and strong, but also kind, caring, and understanding. No other female character has been involved in so many Star Trek critical events and achieved so much, which makes her deserving of this top spot.

That’s our list of the top best Star Trek female characters , but the great thing about this franchise is that it has always been a pioneer for portraying powerful women of diverse races, ages, and cultures. There are way more than 10 great female characters in the Star Trek mythos, and new prominent female characters are being introduced all the time. If you’re a Star Trek fan, you owe it to yourself to check out the video game, Resurgence .

10 Star Trek Female Characters That Made TNG Better

  • TNG introduced strong female characters like Crusher and Troi, but many interesting women only appeared briefly.
  • Star Trek improved its portrayal of women in TNG, but still struggled with underutilization of female characters.
  • Modern Trek shows like Picard and Lower Decks have brought back underutilized female characters for more stories.

Star Trek: The Next Generation introduced several strong and intelligent female characters, most of whom didn't stick around as long as they should have. Led by Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), TNG's ensemble cast featured Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) and Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) as main characters, although they did not always receive the strongest storylines. Throughout its seven seasons, TNG introduced many interesting female characters who only appeared for one or two episodes, despite having the potential for more stories.

Although Star Trek's depiction of women improved dramatically in Star Trek: The Next Generation when compared with Star Trek: The Original Series , TNG was still a product of its time . Many fascinating female characters were introduced throughout the series, but they rarely stuck around long enough to become fully developed characters. Thankfully, modern Trek shows like Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Prodigy have brought back some of these characters who were underutilized in their initial appearances.

20 Awesome Women In Star Trek

Throughout its nearly 60-year history, the Star Trek franchise has introduced an incredible cast of women and iconic female characters.

Commander Elizabeth Shelby (Elizabeth Dennehy)

Star trek: the next generation season 3, episode 26 & season 4, episode 1 - "the best of both worlds".

In the iconic Star Trek: The Next Generation two-parter , "The Best of Both Worlds," Commander Elizabeth Shelby was sent to the USS Enterprise-D to investigate potential Borg attacks. When Shelby learned that Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) had been offered his own command, she set her sights on becoming the next First Officer of the Enterprise-D .

After Captain Picard was kidnapped and assimilated by the Borg, Shelby proved to be an incredibly skilled officer, as she led an away team to the Borg cube. Picard's capture left Riker in charge of the Enterprise, and Shelby stepped up as his temporary First Officer. In the battle against the Borg, Riker and Shelby made a good team, ultimately rescuing Picard and destroying the Borg cube.

By the time of Star Trek: Picard season 3, Shelby had achieved the rank of Fleet Admiral and she led the celebrations at Frontier Day. When the Borg triggered assimilation in all of Starfleet's youngest officers, Shelby was shot and presumably killed by her assimilated crew members.

KEhleyr (Suzie Plakson)

Star trek: the next generation season 2, episode 20 ("the emissary") & season 4, episode 7 ("reunion").

Suzie Plakson's K’Ehleyr made her debut in Star Trek: The Next Generation's "The Emissary," where she traveled to the Enterprise to intercept an old Klingon sleeper ship. From her very first scene, Plakson embued K'Ehleyr with so much personality that she was instantly memorable. Upon arriving on the Enterprise, K'Ehleyr reconnected with her former flame, Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn), but she refused to marry him when he asked.

After completing her mission in "The Emissary," K'Ehleyr did not make another appearance until TNG season 4's "Reunion." When came aboard the Enterprise this time, she had her young son, Alexander (Jon Steuer) , in tow, and surprised Worf by revealing that he was the father. Tragically, the Klingon Duras (Patrick Massett) killed K'Ehleyr when he discovered that she had found evidence linking him to Worf's discommendation.

Every Star Trek Character Played By Suzie Plakson

What do a Vulcan, a Klingon, a Q, and an Andorian have in common? Actress Suzie Plakson has played them all in her Star Trek guest appearances.

Dr. Leah Brahms (Susan Gibney)

Star trek: the next generation season 3, episode 6 ("booby trap") & season 4, episode 16 ("galaxy's child").

Dr. Leah Brahms may be most remembered as the subject of Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge's (LeVar Burton) awkward holodeck romance , but she was a compelling character on her own. A brilliant scientist who helped design the Enterprise's engines, Brahms could easily have played a larger role in Star Trek: The Next Generation . Brahms was an expert in warp field theory, and the Enterprise crew could have contacted her more often.

Leah Brahms visited the USS Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation 's "Galaxy's Child," which led to an awkward conversation with Geordi when she discovered his holodeck program. Brahms felt understandably violated by La Forge's program, and his reaction didn't exactly do him any favors. Still, the two put aside their differences and worked together in the end, eventually becoming good friends.

Ensign Sito Jaxa (Shannon Fill)

Star trek: the next generation season 5, episode 19 ("the first duty") & season 7, episode 15 ("lower decks").

Sito Jaxa made her first appearance as a cadet at Starfleet Academy, alongside Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton). As a member of the Nova Squadron, Sito was involved in a flight exercise accident that caused the death of one of her fellow cadets. After Sito and her squadron attempted to cover up the real reason for the accident, she remained at Starfleet Academy and continued to pursue a career on a starship.

By the time of TNG's "Lower Decks," Sito had landed a position on the Enterprise-D, working in the security department with Lt. Worf. Seven months after being assigned to the Enterprise, Picard asked Sito to participate in an undercover mission to help a Cardassian defector return to Cardassian space. Tragically, Sito was killed during this mission and her death had a profound effect on her fellow lower deckers.

Sito Jaxa briefly returned in a flashback in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, episode 10, "Old Friends, New Planets." While at the Academy, Sito had been a friend and mentor to Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome).

Ensign Robin Lefler (Ashley Judd)

Star trek: the next generation season 5, episode 2 ("darmok") & season 5, episode 6 ("the game").

Only appearing in two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Ashley Judd's Ensign Robin Lefler had the potential to be a compelling guest character. In her first appearance, she was seen working alongside Geordi La Forge in engineering and she later formed a connection with Wesley Crusher. When Wesley visited the Enterprise while on vacation from Starfleet Academy, he and Robin helped save the crew from a dangerously addictive game.

Aside from Wesley Crusher, TNG rarely explored Starfleet from the perspective of young people (with "Lower Decks" as a notable exception). With Wesley's departure from the show, Robin Lefler could have taken over his role, but she unfortunately never appeared again after "The Game." Modern Trek shows like Star Trek: Lower Decks and the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy have begun exploring the lives of Starfleet cadets and ensigns in more depth.

Nurse Alyssa Ogawa (Patti Yasutake)

16 episodes of star trek: the next generation, star trek generations, star trek: first contact.

Beginning in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4 , Nurse Alyssa Ogawa joined the medical team of Dr. Beverly Crusher. As one of the head nurses on the Enterprise-D, Ogawa assisted with important surgeries and helped care for the crew during medical emergencies. She became close personal friends with Dr. Crusher and the two regularly discussed their romantic relationships and lives outside of their careers.

In TNG season 6, episode 22, "Suspicions," Ogawa even risked her own career to help Dr. Crusher investigate some suspicious deaths. Ogawa appeared in sixteen episodes of TNG, and her presence helped make the Enterprise feel more lived in. She proved herself to be a skilled nurse, and Dr. Crusher even recommended her for promotion in TNG season 7, episode 15, "Lower Decks."

5 Ways Patti Yasutake's Nurse Ogawa Was So Important To Star Trek: TNG

In the wake of Patti Yasutake's tragic death, here are 5 reasons Nurse Alyssa Ogawa became one of Star Trek: TNG's best recurring characters.

Amanda Rogers (Olivia d'Abo)

Star trek: the next generation season 6, episode 6 ("true q").

Amanda Rogers first visited the Enterprise as part of a Starfleet Academy internship, reporting to Dr. Beverly Crusher as her mentor. Soon after her arrival, however, Amanda displayed strange powers reminiscent of John de Lancie's Q. Q arrived to investigate, informing Amanda that she was from the Q Continuum. Her birth parents had left the Contiuum and lived as humans, but were killed when Amanda was a baby.

Although Amanda initially wanted to stay on the Enterprise and refrain from using her powers, she later accepted her true nature and left with Q. Despite Q's later Star Trek appearances , Amanda never appeared again and her story remained unfinished on screen. In her single appearance, Amanda seemed like a genuinely good person and it would have been fascinating to see more of her story, considering she's the only Q who was raised as a human.

Vash (Jennifer Hetrick)

Star trek: the next generation season 3, episode 19 ("captain's holiday") & season 4, episode 20 ("qpid").

Captain Picard was entirely devoted to his Starfleet career, so he rarely found time for romance, but he made an exception for Vash. An archeologist with shady morals, Vash met Jean-Luc Picard while he was vacationing on Risa, and she quickly pulled him into one of her schemes. Intelligent and bold, Vash had visited Risa in search of a legendary artifact that would make her a huge profit.

After their dalliance on Risa, Vash and Picard parted on amicable terms, realizing their lifestyles were incompatible. Vash later reunited with Jean-Luc when the Enterprise hosted the Federation Archaeology Council symposium. While Vash was visiting the Enterprise, Q appeared and tried to help Jean-Luc in his love life by staging an elaborate Robin Hood-inspired fantasy.

After TNG's "Qpid," Vash left to travel with Q and the pair paid a visit to space station Deep Space Nine in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 1, episode 7, "Q-Less."

Keiko O'Brien (Rosalind Chao)

Eight episodes of star trek: the next generation.

Keiko O'Brien first appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4, episode 11, "Data's Day," when she married Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) . Keiko worked as a botanist on the Enterprise-D and was introduced to Miles by their mutual friend, Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner). In TNG season 5, episode 5, "Disaster," Keiko gave birth to her and Miles's first child, Molly (Angela and Angelica Tedeski), with Worf acting as a reluctant midwife.

The following year, in TNG season 6, episode 7, "Rascals," Keiko was one of the Enterprise officers transformed into a child, which led to some awkward moments with Miles and Molly. Although Keiko did not get much development as a character on TNG , she helped fill out the Enterprise crew and reminded viewers that the ship had families aboard. When Chief O'Brien transferred to Deep Space Nine, Keiko and Molly, of course, went with him.

Star Trek: DS9 Made 1 TNG Character More Important (And It Wasnt Chief OBrien)

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's serialized storytelling improved many former TNG characters, including someone close to Chief O'Brien's heart.

Ensign Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes)

Star Trek: The Next Generation introduced Ensign Ro Laren in season 5, and she went on to appear in eight total episodes of the series. Although she received more development as a character than many of the women on this list, TNG still did not use her as much as they could have. Still, Ro had a fascinating backstory. After surviving the Cardassian occupation of Bajor, Ro joined Starfleet but had a rather tumultuous relationship with the organization.

After a disastrous away mission in which Ro disobeyed direct orders, she was court-martialed and imprisoned. She was later reinstated as a Starfleet Ensign and joined the crew of the Enterprise-D. Although many Enterprise crew members were initially weary of Ro, she later came to feel like a part of the crew. Picard took Ro under his wing, which left him all the more disappointed when she left Starfleet to join the rebel group known as the Maquis.

Ro Laren was originally meant to be the First Officer on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, but Michelle Forbes turned down the offer. The role later became Major Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor).

Picard did not get the chance to discuss Ro's betrayal until many years later in Star Trek: Picard season 3 , by which time she had rejoined Starfleet yet again. Ro was apparently killed while investigating the Changeling infiltration of Starfleet, although she did manage to pass the information she had gathered to Picard. Throughout her nine Star Trek appearances, Ro became one of Star Trek: The Next Generation's most interesting secondary characters.

11 Awesome Women of Star Trek

Share the Universe!

Did you know that Star Trek has some of the most phenomenal women playing different roles? Since the show made its debut back in the 1960s, viewers continue to watch amazing women play crucial roles. They exude strength and are inspiring to many generations that continue to enjoy the show.

Today, many women emulate the awesome women of Star Trek who’ve managed to keep the show diverse and intriguing. You notice fans wearing a costume similar to the uniforms the women wear in Star Trek.

Here are the most awesome women of Star Trek :

1. Lily Sloane

Lily Sloane

Lily Sloane is among the most prominent women of Star Trek to date. Her character continues to inspire generations who watch the show from the start to date. She was prominently featured in the Star Trek movie First Contact when her name blew up.

It all began with her spending time with Zafram Cochrane as he worked on a substantial project. He wanted to find a way to be a pioneer in creating a warp-driven spacecraft that would revolutionize the times and change history. Not only was that a great ambition, but such a creation would phenomenally impact the Earth and every other living thing.

But Lily got injured and fell unconscious during this time. It was up to Crusher to rush her to the Enterprise where her life would be okay. Crusher hoped it wasn’t too late for her because her situation was getting critical with every passing moment.

Only things got worse when the ship got attacked as she was getting the help she needed to regain consciousness. She came too as all hell broke loose and, in panic, escaped from those around, not sure who to trust at that moment.

Her panic state made her unpredictable when she took Picard hostage until she was sure she was on the Enterprise then let him go. After that, she realized that the Borg was the real threat and joined in the fight against it. It was the only way to make it out alive as the attack raged on.

Picard was becoming unhinged due to the Borg’s destruction, but Lily managed to help her see hope. With all the crew ready and willing to fight to the end, the Borg wouldn’t win. This not only saved the remaining team but Earth too from any further destruction.

Some women of Star Trek uniforms you can add to a collection include Rubie’s Women’s Star Trek Discovery Command Costume .

2. Seven of Nine

7-of-9

Her costume of choice was a catsuit, and she brought on a certain sex appeal to the show needed at the time. Her role is widely known as a means for the show to attract more male viewers who would otherwise never be interested in it. The show needed to expand its audience reach and grow numbers.

But she managed to turn the tables on the ridiculous expectations set on her shoulders and become one of the strongest female characters in the history of Star Trek. She no longer played a mere role as a sex object but a role model to many aspiring, strong women of all ages worldwide.

Her role begins while traveling with her parents at the tender age of 6. She was assimilated to become a Borg but later gained her freedom thanks to Captain Janeway.

Her journey to being human again made her realize her terrible role as a Borg and the pain she’d caused. All these made her into a strong person who managed to save the ship twice, drawing strength from her strong spirit. She earned her place as one of the top women of Star Trek .

3. Kira Nerys

Kira Nerys

Her role in the great Star Trek show was purely to bring an element of conflict that would have viewers glued to the screen. The creators saw a chance to bring in a character who wore a uniform with a different color. She was a match for the Federation Captain, and her purpose was evident from the start.

She stuck to her guns from the start, given her past as a resistant group leader. Though her current position was that of a liaison officer, she still had the spirit of a freedom fighter deep down. Also, she had no trust in politics and instead held fast to her religion.

Kira wasn’t only empty talk since all she said she could easily back with action earning her a spot among the most awesome women of Star Trek . Everywhere she turned, her beliefs met endless challenges, but she never once backed down. However, she grew as a person by learning to be open-minded to positive aspects that were different from what she knew.

4. Kathryn Janeway

Kathryn Janeway

She was officially known as Captain Janeway and was one of the most formidable leaders ever to grace Star Trek. Janeway was known to uphold all the different ideals of the Starfleet and ensured her crew was always safe.

Also, she showed plenty of skill when it came to physical and verbal confrontations while making tough choices. Her crew was held to a higher standard, which she set an example of how she carried herself. Despite her tough exterior, they always knew they could turn to her when facing certain problems, for she was always willing to listen and help.

Who else could match her as one of the most phenomenal women of Star Trek who fought Borg and other enemies while forging new friendships?

Guinan

Guinan played a crucial role in the Enterprise despite being a bartender on the ship, which she played to perfection, earning a spot on the top women list. Many might downplay her role as a minor, but she managed to advise some of the top leaders on crucial matters, and her advice was well received.

Everyone was grateful when her friendship with lonely Ro shed light on a conspiracy that Picard learned about through her. If they didn’t share the deep connection, things would not have worked out as they did.

Her origins were from El-Aurian, but her people were scattered everywhere by the heartless Borg. However, she was not one to mess with, and even Q knew so explaining why she’s among the top women of Star Trek .

To better understand her strength, you’ll notice that she played a major role in stopping a rebellion in Ten Forward. Most of the people had serious sleep deprivation leading to the unrest. She shot a few beams from her energy beam rifle, which solved the matter.

Another great woman of Star Trek costume to get is Nyota Uhura Costume Red

6. K’Ehleyr

Though she died earlier on, Star Trek fans will forever remember her character with fondness. Her role began when she was on the Enterprise to find a way to handle an issue with a ship of Klingons.

They were under the presumption that the Federation and Klingon were still at war, but an alliance was in place. Finally, she managed to calm the water when the Klingons lowered their weapons and permitted her to board their ship.

However, she had an edge to her, which contributed to her death at the hands of Duras. Duras was contending to take on the position of Klingon chancellor but was involved in a conspiracy. To keep it a secret, one of the strongest women of Star Trek had to die.

7. Captain Rachel Garrett

Captain Rachel Garrett

She is the only female captain of the Enterprise in charge of the Enterprise C. Enterprise C came forth during the 24-century mid-battle when a temporal rift occurred. This changed history forever, and the Enterprise was now in the middle of a war.

Despite trying hard to keep the occurrence a secret, Picard pressed for answers about when and where they were. Captain Rachel learned that her ship needed to be defeated and accepted without a second thought to this sacrifice to save thousands more.

Her perfect example of sacrifice was emulated by her crew, making her among the most awesome women of Star Trek .

8. Naomi Wildman

Naomi Wildman

Being an only child in a ship full of grown-ups was easy for Naomi Wildman. She liked being the only kid around but always ensured she pulled her weight. Her favorite part of it was assisting the captain and also studying everything she could find.

Her quest for perfection made her mirror the person she most feared, who was Seven of Nine. Her fear would be short-lived after having to face it and come clean about her goals. The two became more than just friends but had a great relationship as colleagues.

She continued to prove herself worthy of her friendship with Seven of Nine, making it to the list of most phenomenal women of Star Trek .

Natira

You would be forgiven for mistaking Natira as a follower of given rules from her first appearances on the show. All her orders came from an oracle, and she was the high priestess of Yonada. Though she believed in the oracle and obeyed commands, she also followed her heart.

Her spirit began to shine once she met McCoy, who only had a year to live. She proposed that he spend the year with her, which he accepted. Later on, she’d discover all the lies about everything she believed in.

Natira’s strength would shine when she learned of the oracle’s deception of her location. She was on a ship and not a planet. Despite it all, she chose to remain on board for her people when McCoy suggested they leave together.

10. Ro Laren

Ro Laren

Ro Laren was brought up in a refugee camp during the Cardassian occupation, where she saw too much pain and torture. Her most horrific memory of those days was when her father was tortured to death during an investigation by a Cardassian. She held that memory close, and it’s what drove her strong spirit and helped her survive trying times.

Her assignment to the Enterprise was under false pretenses, which Guinan found out. She encouraged Ro Laren to tell Picard the truth, and she eventually did in hopes that she wouldn’t get in trouble. Her truth saved the Maquis, who were caught up in a conspiracy that would blame them for an attack. If not for her admission, the Maquis were set to stand trial for the situation and take the fall for something they didn’t do.

She would later join the Enterprise crew serving them well but opted to leave after some time for the Maquis. The choice was hard, but it was one she had to make, proving once more how strong her spirit was. Everyone, including Picard, understood her decision, and it’s why she’s one of the most awesome women of Star Trek .

11. Edith Keeler

Edith Keeler

No one can deny that Edith was a visionary who ran a soup kitchen providing a warm meal during the tough times of the Great Depression. The soup kitchen was in New York, one of the places hardest hit by the depression.  She was able to predict great times in history when humanity would harness incredible energies.

These energies would make space travel possible, and those who took part would learn how to feed millions of starving people. She had the right concept of the changes the world needed but was killed before starting an American peace movement that would’ve prevented WW2.

Edith truly was one of the most amazing women of Star Trek who was ahead of her time in many ways. She foretold the atomic bomb and space travel before it happened.

Star Trek's Strongest Supporting Women Characters

Beyond the Captain Janeways, Dr. Crushers, and Major Kiras, there has always been strong women in Star Trek.

Illustrated collage featuring Star Trek's Number One, Kasidy Yates, Carol Marcus, Ro Laren, Lursa, Edith Keeler, Rachel Garrett, and Lily Sloane

StarTrek.com

While the Star Trek franchise reached its pinnacle with Kate Mulgrew's fantastic portrayal of Captain Janeway, it began earlier with the truly revolutionary casting of Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Uhura. While one can nitpick and say she was subservient to the boys (and there's definitely an argument to be made), the very fact that an African American woman was seen on the Bridge had a direct impact on the viewing public. (Just ask Whoopi Goldberg!)

As Women's History Month comes to a close, let's take a look back — beyond the Dr. Crushers and Major Kiras — to some of the less-obvious strong women characters in the history of Star Trek .

10. Captain Kasidy Yates

Close-up of Kasidy Yates as she smiles over at Ben Sisko in 'The Way of the Warrior'

"The Way of the Warrior"

It takes a special kind of woman to win the heart of a space station commander, military leader, and Emissary to the Prophets. Kasidy Yates is that women.

She's a hardworking cargo ship captain (engaging in some light and mostly benign smuggling on the side) who refuses special treatment when caught or when it’s time to pitch in against the Dominion. Plus, she likes baseball. Yeah, Kasidy is awesome — let Sisko do the cooking!

9. Yeoman Leslie Thompson

Yeoman Leslie Thompson beams down to a planet's surface with the away team in 'By Any Other Name'

"By Any Other Name"

Okay, an odd pick, sure, but hear me out 'cause this is important.

How much was The Original Series in the vanguard? They were willing to have women beam down to planets as part of armed away teams. And sometimes (okay, once) they were willing to kill them off. Pretty radical!

Yeoman Thompson was the redshirt who was turned into the giant chalk Dungeons & Dragons cube and then crushed to death by that jerk from the Andromeda Galaxy in " By Any Other Name ."

8. Romulan Commander

The Romulan commander sits comfortably in her seat in 'The Enterprise Incident'

"The Enterprise Incident"

Nobody said they all had to be good guys!

While ultimately unsuccessful, the unnamed Romulan Commander from The Original Series ' "The Enterprise Incident" was cunning enough that it took the wits of both Kirk and Spock to take her down.

She had ambition and drive, as well as the courage to sacrifice herself for the good of the Romulan Empire. And did she actually get under Spock's Vulcan skin a little bit? That's up to your interpretation.

7. Lily Sloane

Close-up of Lily Sloane on the surface of Earth in Bozeman as she looks up to the sky in Star Trek: First Contact

Star Trek: First Contact

Blow up the damn ship!

Lily Sloane, Star Trek: First Contact

It takes a lot of sand to say — to SHOUT — something like that to Jean-Luc Picard, as Lily Sloane does in Star Trek: First Contact . And to kinda be right? Even more so.

Most civilians from a pre-Warp era would just be freaking out that time traveling humans and aliens are bombarding Earth, but this sharp engineer keeps her head enough to offer military advice.

Close-up of Lursa as she holds a cup in 'Redemption'

"Redemption"

The true mastermind of the Klingon Civil War, the machinations of Lursa of the House of Duras left the galaxy quaking for whole seasons. Even with all this going on, she found time to be a mother. Awww, right?

Also, her death in Star Trek Generations was cooler than Kirk's. Sadly, it was WAY cooler.

(Feel free to argue with me that Kai Winn shoulda got the "political puppet master" slot. It was a close call.)

5. Captain Rachel Garrett

Captain Rachel Garrett looks up while on the bridge of the Enterprise-C in 'Yesterday's Enterprise'

"Yesterday's Enterprise"

From Star Trek: The Next Generation 's " Yesterday's Enterprise ," a serious contender for best single episode ever in any series, we meet the captain of the Enterprise -C, Rachel Garrett . And we don't even KNOW that it is due to her bravery and sacrifice that the current timeline is as breezy and upbeat as it is today. (Guinan kinda knows, but that's complicated.)

Tricia O'Neal's strong-yet-still-feminine portrayal of a starship captain no doubt paved the way toward Captain Janeway, another reason to offer her a hero's salute.

4. Dr. Carol Marcus

Carol Marcus pensively glances over in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

The woman who held, at least for a time, the heart of James Tiberius Kirk. But Dr. Marcus is no mere Captain's squeeze. She is an independent woman and a brilliant scientist whose Genesis Device is so powerful it was the focus of two movies!!

She also represents one of the very few times you'll see someone have a bone of contention with Starfleet prior to the creation of the Maquis.

(Again, here's your opportunity to scream at me for leaving a different brilliant scientist, Dr. Leah Brahms , off the list. This is hard work, people! And thankless, too. I felt the heat the other day for not including the Salt Vampire from TOS or the corpses from TNG ’s “ Night Terrors ” in my column about Trek ’s freakiest moments.)

3. Number One

Number One sits at her station on the bridge of the Enterprise in 'The Cage'

"The Cage"

Captain Pike's steady-as-a-rock first officer, Number One, was a brilliant tactician who wasn't afraid to bring out the laser cannons, or to sacrifice herself with an overloaded phaser rather than suffer indignities at the hands of the Talosians.

If you think her story ended with "The Cage," oh, how wrong you are. Drop everything and read John Byrne's fantastic comic series Star Trek: Crew to see Number One's really whacked-out adventures both pre- and post- her time on the Enterprise . Then pick up some of Peter David's New Frontier novels and focus on the Morgana Prime character. (I was there at New York Comic-Con a few years ago when David basically admitted that Morgana - Robin Lefler's mother - was actually Number One!)

In addition, Number One's adventure continues aboard Pike's Enterprise on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .

2. Ro Laren

Close-up of Ro Laren in Star Trek: The Next Generation - Preemptive Strike

"Preemptive Strike"

[ RELATED : Everything You Need to Know About Ro Laren ]

One of the richest figures in Star Trek , the Bajoran nationalist was the first character we ever met whose antipathy toward Starfleet ever seemed justified. Still, her loyalty to Captain Picard kept her in line... most of the time.

Ro Laren was such a badass that even the woman who played her, Michelle Forbes, had to swim upstream. She rejected the offer to be a lead on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , causing the show's producers to create the (at first) somewhat similar character of Kira Nerys. Ultimately, it worked out for the best, but, oh, if only we could glimpse into that alternate timeline!

But to hold that desire ever, don't miss Ro Laren's confrontation with Picard 30+ years after the fact in Star Trek: Picard .

1. Edith Keeler

Close-up of Edith Keeler with a street light shining on her at night in 'The City on the Edge of Forever'

"The City on the Edge of Forever"

Imagine a woman whose soup is so powerful it could change the course of World War II.

In " The City on the Edge of Forever ," it is this loving, warm, and caring pacifist who must be silenced for evil not to conquer the world. (Blame Harlan Ellison; he's the sicko that thought of it!) Edith Keeler isn't just a character; she's a philosophical construct, a topic worthy of intellectual debate that the finest scholars could argue about for ages. And just thinking about her (and the phrase "He knows, Doctor. He knows.") is enough to send an army of Star Trek fans blubbering.

Women of Star Trek: Leaders

A Women’s History Month Celebration of Women in Star Trek, Part 4: Leaders

For our final installment celebrating the Women of Star Trek , we focus on those who lead the charge. The past few weeks have been building to this alpha list of Women who’ve made major contributions to Star Trek canon. These Women do not shy away from their duty or fate.

Katherine Janeway

Celebrating the Women of Star Trek Kathryn Janeway

As captain of the eponymous ship on Star Trek: Voyager , Janeway ( Kate Mulgrew ) wasn’t just the first woman to lead a Star Trek . She also faced the unprecedented challenges associated with leading her stranded crew back from the Delta Quadrant. Fortunately, no captain could be better suited for the job. An unapologetic leader who emphasizes inclusion and scientific exploration, Janeway would allow no boundary — up to and including the Temporal Prime Directive — to go uncrossed in her quest to return the USS Voyager to Earth. At the conclusion of the series, Janeway didn’t just succeed in her mission. She also brought the fruits of her experimentation home with her. This included significant advances for holographic technology, new knowledge regarding the people and places in the Delta Quadrant, and even some anti-Borg tech from a few decades or so down a parallel timeline. In this sense, Janeway proved to be a leader not just for Voy ’s crew, but for the Federation’s scientific thought in general. In Star Trek: Prodigy , multiple versions of Janeway appear to guide the next generation. This includes Hologram Janeway, who helps initiate the USS Protostar crew into the basics of Starfleet, and Vice Admiral Janeway, who provides the crew with a trial by fire before proving to be their staunchest defender in the Prodigy season 1 finale. And later this year, Prodigy season 2 promises to give Janeway Prime the chance to work directly with the young Starfleet initiates. With a role model who possesses the leadership strength of Janeway, they’re sure to be ready to boldly go on their own in no time.

Oh, and for the record? She was absolutely correct in her decision regarding Tuvix. ‘Nuff said. — AJK

Michael Burnham

Celebrating the Women of Star Trek Capt. Micheal Burnham of Discovery

Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) is an incredible and capable leader who’s gone down a long road of darkness and adversity in order to win over the trust, confidence, and love of her crew and family aboard the USS Discovery . She grew up on Vulcan as the adopted sister of Spock, after graduating from the Vulcan Science Academy she joined Starfleet and eventually rose up in the ranks on the USS Shenzhou where she would eventually commit mutiny and in doing so inadvertently launch a devastating war between the Klingons and the Federation.

After six months in prison, she found her way onto the Discovery where she met some familiar faces and new ones alike. Becoming a full-fledged member of the Discovery and rejoining Starfleet was an arduous journey in and of itself, but in the process, she helped save the galaxy from the Klingons; saved a separate universe from the Terran Empire; led her crew into the 32 nd century; solved the over hundred year old mystery and stopped the Emerald Chain from destroying Starfleet; and most recently brought Earth back into the Federation and saved the galaxy from being harvested by super-intelligent aliens.

Michael Burnham was born to lead and her journey from survivor to captain’s chair has been one for the history books. Her story is one of growing and learning to overcome your mistakes in order to be rehabilitated into society. Burnham is someone we should aspire to look up to, because if she can succeed so can we all. — DC

Rachel Garrett

Women of Star Trek

Rachel Garrett ( Tricia O’Neil ) in Star Trek canon is the 1st woman to Captain an Enterprise , her first appearance is in the TNG alternate history episode “ Yesterday’s Enterprise. ”

In 2344 as captain of the Ambassador-class Enterprise -C , Garrett responded to a Klingon distress call from their outpost on Narendra III. There the Enterprise -C engaged 4 Romulan Warbirds resulting in a temporal rift that threw the Enterprise -C forward in time to the year 2366. This resulted in the timeline being changed to one where the Federation and Klingons are at war, a war that the Federation is losing.

With a badly damaged ship and heavy crew losses, Garrett made the hard command decision to have the Enterprise -C reenter the rift, return home to their time, and possibly repair the timeline. Before the Enterprise -C could reenter the rift, a Klingon scout attacked the ship resulting in the death of Captain Garrett. Her crew would carry on, return to 2344, and defend the outpost resulting in better relations with the Federation and Klingons.

Her legend would be celebrated with a statue on M’talas Prime at the Starfleet Recruitment building in 2401. A dedication ceremony was scheduled as a part of a pre-Frontier Day celebration but was destroyed in a terrorist attack.

But the story of Rachel Garrett won’t end there as fans will rejoice with a young Garrett ( Kacey Rohl ) appearing in the upcoming Section 31 streaming movie. — GC3

Beckett Mariner

star trek woman

Beckett Mariner ( Tawny Newsome ) is Starfleet.

Being a legacy child of two command-level officers, Mariner’s life story is the story of Starfleet, having been adjacent to important events or people like being classmates with Nicholas Locarno and Wesley Crusher while in Starfleet, Academy, after graduating served on Deep Space 9 during the Dominion War, and along the way cultivated relationships with other Starfleet legends like Captain William Riker of the USS Titan.

Her career would take a bit of a setback because of her survivor’s guilt post-Dominion War, suffering “silently” she sabotaged her career track avoiding promotions whenever she could, associating promotions with the friends lost during the war.

Live action Becket Mariner

Serving aboard the USS Cerritos would rekindle her passion for being in Starfleet rise to the crisis of the week and be recognized as a true leader among her peers, leading to a promotion and re-triggering her trauma. This would lead to some self-destructive actions during missions, and it would be some time before she eventually faced her survivor’s guilt. Along her healing path, she traveled back in time to meet Captain Pike and the crew of the Constitution -class Enterprise, good times, and in a live quadrant-wide broadcast proclaimed her loyalty to Starfleet and its mission, thwarted Nicholas Locarno’s misguided uprising plot.

The success of the Cerritos in its second contact missions can be attributed to its young officer core led by Beckett Mariner. She might come off as a complete loose cannon, reckless and insubordinate, the absolute opposite of a role model Starfleet officer, but put Mariner’s DNA under a scanner, we would see the Starfleet emblem mixed in with her genetics. — GC3

star trek woman

Dabo girls were Quark’s answer to Vegas showgirls, and if this had been any show but Star Trek Leeta ( Chase Masterson ) may have been simple arm candy for an episode or two. Instead, this smart, capable woman had agency and an entire character arc in which she wound up with a kind, loving man who then wound up becoming the Grand Nagus.

While her husband is a revolutionary in his own way, Leeta is the backbone that helps their vision come to fruition. She’s the savvy business person that the leader of the Ferengi people has to be. It’s not all her, it’s a team effort, especially demonstrated by the recent Lower Decks episode “Parth Ferengi’s Heart Place ,” but there’s not a chance that Ferenginar would continue to be headed for a better future without her there too.

Leeta demonstrates that you can have beauty and brains, and everything else for that matter. You don’t have to compromise for love or for life. — LK

Tryla Scott

Celebrating the Women of Star Trek

Tryla Scott ( Ursaline Bryant ) is the youngest person in Starfleet history to reach the rank of Captain. This accomplishment is amazing when compared to Starfleet giants like Kirk and Picard who both became Captains in their early-mid twenties through battlefield promotions, which showcases how much of a prodigy she is as Starfleet has a history of wanting commanders with years of experience.

In my head, I see her with a parent very much like Scandal ’s Papa Pope telling her “ You have to be…twice as good as them to get half of what they have .” While not official Star Trek canon, she appears in The Autobiography of Benjamin Sisko by Derek Tyler Attico and we get to learn a bit about her drive to command, as well as her fate after the alien invasion was stopped (in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 1’s “Conspiracy”). —  GC3

Phillipa Georgiou (both versions)

star trek woman

Philippa Georgiou (Prime Universe) doesn’t get much screen time compared to her Mirror counterpart, however the effect she has on character’s such as Michael Burnham and Saru hangs over the series like a shadow. She found Saru and brought him into Starfleet, helping him escape his deadly homeworld, and nurtured Burnham after she was placed in Starfleet’s care; raising them both to become great leaders. Georgiou (P) was an understanding and compassionate captain of the USS Shenzhou , she was unceremoniously cut down in battle against the Klingons at the Battle of the Binary Stars after her first officer Burnham mutinied and unintentionally started a war with the warrior race.

star trek woman

Philippa Georgiou (Mirror Universe) by contrast was the Emperor of the Terran Empire within the Mirror Universe. Cold, calculating, and genocidal she led the Empire in a scorched space campaign, killing any and all species that retaliated against their might. Vulcan, Klingon, Andorian, no one was safe. Eventually, Georgiou (M) would find her way into the Prime Universe where she first joined Section 31 as a shadow operative for Starfleet, but after joining the USS Discovery crew in the 32 nd century (and isolated from everything she once knew), this Georgiou over time would be changed by Burnham and crew into a more tolerant person.

Georgiou, no matter the universe, displays great leadership – be it in different ways – but also serves as a great example of how compassion can ultimately inspire others to do better, to be better, and to discover more about oneself than was considered possible. —  DC

Lucille Ball

Celebrating the Women of Star Trek

Growing up, I was probably Lucille Ball ’s number one fan. I bought every book about the comedian, any t-shirt adorned with her face, and recorded VHSs of every television show and movie she was in, not just I Love Lucy , though that was my favorite. But, it wasn’t until I got chicken pox in third grade that I took up one of Ball’s greatest achievements: Star Trek .

While Gene Roddenberry might have envisioned the “ Wagon Train to the Stars ,” it was Ball, through her studio Desilu Productions, who had the Hollywood clout and money to ensure the series happened. She stood by the show through two pilot shoots, stepping in to convince NBC to shoot the second pilot that was ultimately picked up for series. — ROK

Star Trek: The Original Series Cast & Character Guide

Star trek: enterprise cast & character guide, star trek: lower decks cast guide - who voices each character in all 4 seasons.

  • Vulcan female characters have played a variety of roles in the Star Trek franchise, from Starfleet officers to influential leaders on Vulcan. They have had relationships with Starfleet officers and have been proteges of Spock.
  • Some notable Vulcan women include Lt. Valeris, a disappointment and traitor; Admiral Patar, who met a tragic end; Lt. T'Veen, who was murdered in a hostage situation; T'Mir, who helped introduce Vulcan technology to Earth; and President T'Rina, who helped reunify Vulcan and Romulan races.
  • T'Pau, described as "all of Vulcan in one package," was a powerful and influential woman on Vulcan, while T'Pring's complicated love story with Spock has been given more context and nuance in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Lt. T'Lyn has emerged as a popular new Vulcan character, and Lt. Saavik and Subcommander T'Pol are considered legendary Vulcan characters.

Female Vulcans rank among Star Trek ' s greatest characters, and a few are even notorious. Star Trek: The Original Series season 2, episode 1, "Amok Time," opened up Mr. Spock's (Leonard Nimoy) Vulcan culture when he returned to his homeworld. "Amok Time" introduced two crucial female Vulcan characters, T'Pring (Arlene Martel) and T'Pau (Celia Lovsky), who set the stage for how the women of Vulcan would be portrayed throughout the Star Trek franchise.

Vulcan female characters run the gamut of being Star Trek series leads and supporting characters. Some have been Starfleet Officers while others proudly work on Vulcan. Star Trek's Vulcan women have had relationships with Starfleet Officers, and two have been the proteges of Spock. Influential and powerful Vulcan women have made an impact in every generation of Star Trek . One disgraced the United Federation of Planets in the late 23rd century while another is helping unify the Federation in the distant 32nd century. Here are 10 of the best and worst of Star Trek's female Vulcan characters.

Star Trek: The Original Series features some of the most iconic characters in all of science fiction with the crew of the original USS Enterprise.

10 Lieutenant Valeris - Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

Played by kim cattrall.

Lt. Valeris (Kim Cattrall) is, perhaps, the greatest disappointment among Star Trek's female Vulcans, and she is certainly a sore subject for her mentor Spock. The first Vulcan to graduate at the top of her class from Starfleet Academy, Lt. Valeris was stationed on the USS Enterprise in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country . Valeris was secretly part of a conspiracy involving rogue Klingons, Romulans, and Federation officers who assassinated Klingon Chancellor Gorkon (David Warner) and framed Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner). Valeris and her conspirators' plan to prevent peace between the Klingons and the Federation was foiled, and Valeris was arrested for treason.

9 Admiral Patar - Star Trek: Discovery

Played by tara nicodemo, star trek: discovery.

Patar (Tara Nicodemo) is notable as a female Vulcan who achieved the rank of Starfleet Admiral. In Star Trek: Discovery season 2, Admiral Patar was among a group of flag officers who empowered Control, Section 31's threat assessment A.I. Control went rogue and took over Section 31, killing and replacing several Starfleet Officers including Section 31's leader Captain Leland (Alan Van Sprang). Admiral Patar was among those Control murdered and impersonated, a sad ending for a Vulcan woman who rose so high in 23rd-century Starfleet.

8 Lieutenant T'Veen - Star Trek: Picard

Played by stephanie czajkowski, star trek: picard.

Lieutenant T'Veen (Stephanie Czajkowski) is a Star Trek: Picard season 3 tragedy. T'Veen was the Science Officer of the USS Titan-A, and she was an essential part of Captain Liam Shaw's (Todd Stashwick) bridge crew. When Changelings led by Captain Vadic (Amanda Plummer) invaded the Titan, they stormed the bridge and held the crew hostage. T'Veen was murdered by Vadic in order to force Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) to surrender. T'Veen cried a tear before she was disintegrated, which indicates the bald Science Officer was half-Vulcan and half-Deltan.

7 T'Mir - Star Trek: Enterprise

Played by jolene blalock.

  • Star Trek: Enterprise

T'Mir was the second foremother (great-grandmother) of T'Pol on Star Trek: Enterprise and Jolene Blalock played both roles in Enterprise season 2, episode 2, "Carbon Creek". T'Mir was part of a Vulcan expedition that crash-landed on Earth in 1957, making them among the first Vulcans to visit Earth over a century before Star Trek's official First Contact Day. T'Mir and her crewmates secretly lived along the unsuspecting people of Carbon Creek, Pennsylvania for months. Prior to her rescue, T'Mir sold Vulcan velcro technology in order to pay for one of the townspeople's college education.

In Star Trek's canon, T'Mir is the reason the human race has velcro.

Star Trek: Enterprise introduced new faces to the prequel series set a century before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series.

6 President T'Rina - Star Trek: Discovery

Played by tara rosling.

In Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century, T'Rina (Tara Rosling) is President of Ni'Var, the renamed planet Vulcan that is home to the reunified Vulcan and Romulan races, as well as the Romulan warrior nuns called the Qowat Milat. Initially reluctant to allow Ni'Var to rejoin the fractured United Federation of Planets after The Burn, T'Rina changed her mind after observing the heroism of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) of the USS Discovery, who led First Contact with Species 10-C in an adjoining galaxy. T'Rina also sparked a romance with Captain Saru (Doug Jones), the first love story between a Vulcan and a Kelpien.

5 T'Pau - Star Trek: The Original Series & Star Trek: Enterprise

Played by celia lovsky in tos and kara zediker on enterprise, star trek: the original series.

Described by Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) as "all of Vulcan in one package," T'Pau (Celia Lovsky) was the most powerful and influential woman on Vulcan during Star Trek: The Original Series ' era. T'Pau, the first person to turn down a seat on the Federation Council, oversaw the kal-if-fee ritual that severed the bond between Spock and his fiancée, T'Pring (Arlene Martel). Over a century earlier, Star Trek: Enterprise season 4 depicted how Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) and T'Pol helped a younger T'Pau (Kara Zediker ) overthrow the corrupt Vulcan government's plot to subjugate Vulcan to the Romulans and reinstall the teachings of Surak.

4 T'Pring - Star Trek: The Original Series & Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Played by arlene martel in tos and gia sandhu in strange new worlds, star trek: strange new worlds.

For decades, T'Pring was seen as a callous woman who wished to break her engagement to Spock in order to marry another man, Stonn (Lawrence Montaigne) in Star Trek: The Original Series season 2's premiere, "Amok Time." Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has added far more context and nuance to the genuine but complicated love story between the younger T'Pring (Gia Sandhu) and Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck). At this point in their lives, Spock and T'Pring tried to make their relationship work, but it was jeopardized by Spock's devotion to Starfleet and his attraction to Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), which caused T'Pring to put the brakes on her and Spock's engagement.

3 Lieutenant T'Lyn - Star Trek: Lower Decks

Played by gabrielle ruiz.

Lieutenant T'Lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz) quickly emerged as the most popular new Vulcan female character Star Trek has introduced in decades. On Star Trek: Lower Decks , T'Lyn was banished from her Vulcan science vessel for being "too emotional," and she transferred to Starfleet's USS Cerritos. T'Lyn's dry logic has been a welcome and hilarious contrast to her fellow Lower Deckers, and she was pleased to receive a quick promotion to Lieutenant, junior grade. Deciding that her place is on the Cerritos after all, T'Lyn is a welcome reminder of how cool and genuinely funny Vulcans can be.

Star Trek: Lower Decks features an incredibly talented and prolific voice cast of actors. Here's who's who aboard the USS Cerritos.

2 Lieutenant Saavik -Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search For Spock & Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Played by kirstie alley in star trek ii and robin curtis in star trek iii & star trek iv.

Debuting in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , Lt. Saavik (Kirstie Alley) was the first significant Vulcan character in Starfleet, and she has become legendary despite just 3 appearances in the Star Trek movies. Saavik served on the USS Enterprise during Admiral Kirk's battle with Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban). Saavik returned in Star Trek III and IV , where she was played by Robin Curtis, and she was crucial in restoring the resurrected Spock back to his proper Vulcan self. Although Saavik hasn't been seen since 1986, Star Trek: Picard season 3's backstory updated her canon.

In 2293, Saavik was promoted to become the first Captain of the USS Titan.

1 Subcommander T'Pol - Star Trek: Enterprise

Star Trek: Enterprise retconned Subcommander T'Pol to be the first Vulcan to serve as Science Officer and First Officer of the Starship Enterprise. T'Pol was a reluctant participant in the NX-01 Enterprise's maiden voyage under Captain Jonathan Archer, but she remained aboard the human vessel and gradually came to respect and befriend the Starfleet Officers. T'Pol's knowledge and efficiency were integral to the legendary voyages of the NX-01 Enterprise, while T'Pol herself shifted her allegiance from the Vulcan High Command to Starfleet. Jolene Blalock arguably delivered the finest portrayal of a Vulcan since Leonard Nimoy himself, and T'Pol is not only the greatest female Vulcan in Star Trek but one of the best Vulcan characters of the franchise.
