You want to visit Balos Beach  (sometimes also called Balos Lagoon) during your stay in Crete ?

Great idea!

Balos Beach and its magnificent turquoise lagoon is simply one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete.

In this guide, I will tell you everything you need to know to plan your visit: how to get to Balos Beach by car, by boat or with a guided tour as well as all my best tips for a perfect day.

You will see, with all my best tips and practical information , you will be able to organise your day at Balos Beach very easily!

So, let’s plan your visit to Balos Lagoon!

Balos Beach – One of the most beautiful beaches in Crete

1. boat trip to balos lagoon from kissamos, 2. day trip to balos lagoon from chania, 3. day trip to balos from rethymnon, 4. day trip to balos beach from heraklion, 5. private cruise to balos, 6. rent a boat to go to balos beach, going to balos beach by car, 1. swimming in balos beach, 2. visit balos on foot, 3. water activities in balos, where to eat in balos, what are the things to take when visiting balos lagoon, how long does it take to visit balos beach, falassarna beach, the botanical garden of crete, balos beach hotel, stay in kissamos and take the boat to balos, stay in chania, renting a boat in crete, how to go to balos beach, where is balos lagoon located in crete, when to go to balos, balos or elafonisi lagoon, you’re traveling to crete these articles will help you.

Balos beach is one of the top 3 most beautiful beaches on the island and is often ranked first.

Balos is located in the north-west of Crete , at the end of the Gramvoussa peninsula. If you are planning an itinerary in Crete , you must absolutely include this beach in your scheduled visits.

Once there, you will discover a lagoon divided in two by a sandbar and shallow translucent waters on either side.

In some places, the sand even has a slight pink colour (similar to Elafonissi beach , another very famous beach in Crete), which gives the place even more charm.

How to get to Balos Lagoon – The 6 options

To get to Balos Beach , you will mainly have the choice between going there by car or opting for a boat trip.

If you are in a hurry and just want to book your boat trip to Balos without reading the entire guide, I have selected here the 2 best cruises to go to Balos Lagoon. Just click on the orange links to book:

  • Cruise to Balos Lagoon from Kissamos : a day trip to Balos.
  • Chania to Balos: pick up by bus in front of your hotel in Chania + cruise from Kissamos to Balos.

I will now explain all the ways to reach Balos Lagoon.

Visit Balos Lagoon by boat

There are boat trips to Balos from several Cretan towns.

This is the most classic way to go to Balos Beach and the lagoon : choose a boat trip during the day.

But where do you take boat to Balos?

The boat leaves from Kissamos, a town located north-west of Crete , 38 km from Chania.  You can drive to the hotel and leave your car in the free car park at the port . You can also take the bus from Chania (departure from the bus station).

As part of this superb voyage, you will start along the coast before reaching the first stop of the day*: the Gramvoussa island. You will have about 2 hours to swim on the pretty beach and/or go up to the 16th century Venetian fortress.

The boat then leaves, and after about 20 minutes, reaches Balos where you will have the chance to spend the rest of the day swimming in the crystal clear waters. Deckchairs and parasols can also be rented at Balos beach for just €10 and €2.

You can also walk a little to Cape Tigani . To know the things to do in Balos, just read the rest of the article. 😊

In the late afternoon, the boat will take you back to the port of Kissamos.

*The order may be reversed: first Balos, then the stop at Gramvoussa.

To book your boat trip to Balos Beach by boat from Kissamos , just click on the button below:

  • Be sure to arrive at least 30/40 minutes before the cruise departure time. You should allow time for everyone to board the boat if you want it to leave on time. You can also choose the best seats!
  • The boat has a bar and a small restaurant but you still take your own picnic materials.
  • Sneakers are recommended to go up to the fortress of Gramvoussa.

Lagon de Balos

If you have not rented a car for your stay in Crete , you can also go to Balos through a trip from Chania.

The bus will pick you up directly from your hotel or at a meeting point nearby (you will receive an email with the exact location and time after your booking). It will then take you to Kissamos where you will take the boat to Balos.

The boat trip is exactly the same as the one I just told you about with a:

  • Stop on Gramvoussa island
  • A swimming stop in Balos Lagoon.

At the end of the day, the boat returns to Kissamos where you’ll have to wait for your bus to take you back to Chania. This is really the best way if you don’t want to bother with organisational issues, everything is taken care of from start to finish.

To book your trip from Chania to Balos Lagoon , just click on the button below:

Gramvoussa

Your 3rd option to visit Balos beach is to go on a day trip from Rethymnon .

It’s the same as from Chania, with a bus that will pick you up from your hotel in Rethymnon, takes you to Kissamos to take the boat and go to Balos Lagoon.

Click on the green button below to book your boat trip to Balos:

If you aren’t planning to stay in Chania during your tour in Crete , this organised trip is also available from Heraklion (even if it starts to be a little far away for the bus ride):

  • Departure from Heraklion by bus early in the morning
  • Arrival at Kissamos and boarding the boat
  • Stop at Gramvoussa
  • Swimming at Balos Beach
  • Return by boat and bus to Heraklion in the evening.

Book your trip to Balos Lagoon from Heraklion by clicking on the button below:

For those who want to visit Balos Lagoon without other tourists, I have the perfect boat trip for you: a private cruise!

For 4 hours , you and your family or group of friends (up to 5 people) will get the services of a captain who will take you to Balos and Gramvoussa in a semi-rigid inflatable boat.

Snacks and drinks are included in the fare.

Snorkelling equipment (mask, snorkel, flippers) is also provided.

This private boat trip to Balos starts from the port of Kissamos . Guests can choose between departure at 8:30 a.m. and a departure at 3:30 p.m.

In both cases, this let’s you have a much quieter time in Balos because the big boats arrive later in the morning and will already be gone if you choose the afternoon departure.

To book this half-day trip by boat to Balos Beach , just click on the button below:

If you’re looking for a more upscale private cruise, you must choose the private day trip in a sail boat.

The boat can accommodate up to 6 people and leaves Kissamos around 11:00am. After a 90 minute trip where you can gaze upon the coast, you will arrive at Balos Lagoon for a swim break.

You will then leave for Gramvoussa where you can also swim or climb up to the fortress.

The trip also includes an excellent lunch cooked on board and drinks.

If you have your boat licence , you can also rent a boat to go to Balos Lagoon.

It’s also a great idea if you want to visit Balos with family or friends and have a quiet time, deciding your own schedule and where you want to swim.

The easiest way is to rent a boat in Kissamos.

To rent a boat and spend a wonderful day in Balos Lagoon and its surroundsings, you should use Samboat . They simply have the most complete offer for boat rental!

eau turquoise lagon Balos

As I said a bit earlier, you can also get to Balos Lagoon by car.

From Chania , it takes about 90 minutes by car , but you should be aware of some specific points.

Entry to Balos by car is charged: €1 per person. To be paid to the guard in a shack on the right of the road, about 10 km before arriving in Balos.

From the shack, the road turns into a rather rugged track with many stones and large potholes.

That’s why no car rental company in theory allows you to take this track to Balos in a rental car. It will be made clear in your contract that you won’t be covered in case of damage and that if you break down, everything will be at your expense.

If you want to take this risk, you should know that if you drive slowly and leave enough space between the car in front (to avoid getting hit by breaking stones), you won’t need a 4*4 to cover the 8 km of track up to Balos (about a 25 minute drive).

This will become evident when you see the number (and types!) of rental cars that are in the car park! A gentleman will tell you where to park your car.

The car park at Balos is free and has a small snack bar and a paid toilet (€1).

From the car park, you can reach Balos Lagoon on foot via a path that goes down about 1.2 km and descends 150 metres (which you have to climb at the end of the day, which is a little harder 😅).

You must wear sneakers and not flip-flops.

If you are having problems climbing back up, a gentleman will offer you a horseback ride for the return trip.

You must reach Balos Beach by car before 11:00am as after the car park will be full.

Otherwise, you will have to park by the road, which is clearly less practical given its layout and which will greatly increase the walking time to reach the lagoon (the line of parked cars can stretch for miles in summer!).

The best view of Balos Lagoon when going down the path from the car is just before the gentleman who keeps the horses. This is where the most famous photographs of Balos are clicked!

The 3 Best Things to Do in Balos Lagoon

Now that you know how to get to Balos by boat or car, here’s what you can do once you get to the lagoon.

Since Balos Lagoon is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete, you must of course take the opportunity to swim!

It has everything to allow you to spend a heavenly day: fine sands, crystal clear turquoise waters at the ideal temperature, and the little fish to watch.

Between swims, you can relax on your deckchair under a parasol. In this regard, I would like to say that I was very surprised (favourably) by the price of the deckchairs/parasols at Balos beach: only € 10 for 2 for the day.

It’s a good change from the prices at the French Riviera where the beaches aren’t even as pretty as those in Balos!

You must also alternate swimming with small walks at Balos.

You just have to cross the sandbar to get to Cape Tigani. From there, you must take the path that leads to the small chapel , then for the bravest among you, continue on the same path to reach a sublime panoramic view overlooking the entire Balos Lagoon.

If you have chosen a boat trip and you have therefore arrived directly by sea, you must make the effort to cover part of the trail that goes up to the car park.

This is where you’ll have the best view of Balos Beach and the island of Gramvoussa.

Do you want to make the most of your visit to Balos Beach by trying some water activities ?

Well unfortunately, it won’t be possible , you won’t be able to do any water activities in Balos because the area is a protected natural site.

Tips and practical information for your visit to Balos

As I was saying, Balos is a Natura 2000listed site, so there are certain regulations that must be complied with to protect the flora and fauna . As such, most restaurant-type constructions are forbidden to preserve the place.

On Balos beach, there is only one snack bar offering sandwiches and drinks.

If you have taken the classic boat trip from Kissamos, you can eat directly on the boat.

At Balos car park you will also find a small snack bar.

The best option for eating in Balos is to have a standard picnic . It will be cheaper and certainly be better!

Here’s a the list of useful things to take when visiting Balos Lagoon:

  • Sunscreen – There is simply no shade on the beach. If you don’t want to spend the rest of your holiday in Crete tanned red, you know what to do.
  • Water – Of course, you can buy it on the boat or in the snack bars, but not at the same price as in any Cretan supermarket.
  • Sneakers – Necessary if you are arriving by car or if you want to reach the viewpoints of the lagoon.
  • Cash – To pay the entrance fee of €1 when arriving by road or if you want to go to the toilet (€1).

If you have taken the boat trip, consider 1 day in Balos because for all trips, the boat leaves in the middle of the morning and returns to the port of Kissamos in the late afternoon.

For those coming by car: between the return journey on the track, the descent (and the ascent!) on foot + time to enjoy (even if it is a minimum of one hour), plan a minimum of half a day.

If you can, reach Balos as soon as possible to avoid the crowd that arrives with the boats or in the late afternoon when everyone has left.

What are the things to do around Balos beach?

Here is my selection of the best places to visit near Balos beach.

Close to Balos (40 minutes by car), you must visit Falassarna beach .

It’s an excellent beach with translucent waters and pink sand on the water’s edge. A large part of the beach is private, with many Beach Clubs that offer deckchairs and parasols at reasonable prices.

You will easily find a parking space on the large car park or along the road.

Coming from Balos, on the road that goes down to Falassarna, you also have several taverns with a very nice view.

Falassarna beach Crete

On the road between Balos and Chania , you can make a small detour to visit the Botanical Garden of Crete.

A 2.5 km walk (around a 90-minute visit) will allow you to explore a wide variety of plants and fruit from all over Greece and the whole world. It is a really nice place where you can even admire the many peacocks walking freely in the park.

There is also a restaurant (which I recommend!), a bar and a shop selling local produce.

Entrance fee: € 6 with a small bottle of water offered per person, which is very nice!

Jardin botanique Crète

Chania is the closest major city to Balos Beach.

In Chania, you shouldn’t miss:

  • The Old Venetian Port and its piers lined with restaurants
  • The old town, very picturesque and full of shops
  • The Chania Maritime Museum, located on Fort Firkas
  • The covered market to soak up the local flavours.

For your visit to Chania , you must read my article right here: What are the best things to do in Chania?

Where to stay when visiting Balos Lagoon?

To get to Balos Lagoon easily by car or boat, you have mainly 3 options to stay around Balos.

It has studios, apartments or suites for up to 4 people, all with a sea-view balcony/terrace. The accommodations are modern, spacious, bright and all have a kitchenette.

Finally, the hotel has a large swimming pool and a jacuzzi.

  • Kedrissos Hotel: Located 2 km from the historical centre of Chania. Comfortable and warm double room with balcony from 70€, breakfast included. Strong points: swimming pool, cleanliness, friendly staff, excellent breakfast

Strong points: quiet, beautiful pool area with views over Chania, private parking, variety of breakfast options, shuttle to the city centre. It’s my favorite for its setting and excellent value for money!
  • Kydon The Heart City Hotel: Located close to the covered market. Spacious rooms with balcony and comfortable bedding from 130€, breakfast at 15€. Strong points: the location, the excellent breakfast, the warm welcome and the parking. This is my recommendation for an upscale stay in Chania!
  • Chania Flair Deluxe Boutique Hotel: Located 10 minutes from the Old Venetian Port, this 5* hotel offers sumptuous rooms from 250€ per night, breakfast included. Strong points: Spa and wellness area, excellent location, exceptional breakfast, valet service, private beach. This is my recommendation for a luxury stay in Chania!

If you want to rent a boat for a nice day at sea during your stay in Crete, you should book it with Samboat.

Motorboats, sailboats, yachts, small boats without a license, with or without a skipper: they simply have the most complete offer for boat rental!

So, what are you waiting for to book your boat trip in Crete? 😊

FAQ – I’ll answer your questions about Balos Beach

To get to Balos Lagoon, here is a summary of all the options :

  • Boat trip from Kissamos – The classic!
  • Chania to Balos trip (boat included!)
  • Trip from Rethymnon with cruise to Balos
  • Trip from Heraklion + boat to Balos Beach
  • 1/2 day private cruise
  • Private sailboat cruise in Balos – 1 day
  • Boat rental
  • By car via the 8 km track.

Balos Lagoon is located at the far north-west of Crete , at the end of the Gramvoussa peninsula.

To go from Chania to Balos , it takes about 90 minutes by car.

Balos Lagoon is accessible throughout the year by car.

Boat trips are only available from April 30 to October 30.  You won’t be able to visit Balos by boat in winter.

The best time to visit Balos Lagoon is during the months of May, June, September and October . You can swim, enjoy the beach and there are fewer people than in July and August.

For a visit to Balos in summer , you should expect crowds and the weather will be very hot. Going to Balos by boat will be a more pleasant option as it will avoid the hike to reach the car park in the sun. If you are coming by car, you should arrive as soon as possible to get parking space.

Are you choosing between a day at Balos or at Elafonissi ?

It’s not easy to choose between two of the most beautiful beaches in Crete! And I won’t be able to help you much because for me, you absolutely must visit both during your stay in Crete.

I’ll still give you my opinion to help you.

Balos Beach offers a heavenly landscape, less classic than Elafonisi and which you won’t find anywhere else. You can also take a nice boat trip to get there, which is not the case for Elafonisi.

Elafonisi is more easily accessible by car or bus (no track) and is much more developed : large car parks all around, restaurants. With children, for example, it is more practical than Balos.

And its pink sand gives it a lot of charm. In Elafonisi, you can also always find a quieter place to swim. In Balos, everyone is gathered in the same place on the sandbar.

The practical information to get to Elafonissi is in my article: Visit Elafonissi beach.

Enjoy great times with us.

Balos beach is ranked among the top 25 beaches in the world for 2019 , according to Trip Advisor users. Balos beach took the 15th place in the world, after an analytical comparison on quality, quantity and average rating of users’ reviews.

The greenish blue colors, the wild natural beauty, white-pinkish sand, broken sea-shells and the exotic scenery give an eyeful result that nobody should miss.

The water in the lagoon is very shallow and warm, making Balos an ideal destination for children.

Swimming out of the lagoon, water is becoming deeper, crystal-clear, much colder and ideal for snorkelling .

Moreover, the area is a shelter for the protected (under the Natura 2000 program) monk seal and the sea turtle caretta caretta.

Not accidentally, Balos is the most photographed beach in Crete . Sea Breeze Cruises give you the chance to have an amazing boat trip on the most popular beach of the island and have an unforgettable experience.

Recently, we embarked on a full-day trip from Chania to these enchanting destinations – Balos Beach and Gramvousa Island , and it was an experience that included discovering a new island where we could swim in crystal-clear waters, and capture breathtaking views from the historic Gramvousa fortress. Where the rest of the afternoon we spent chilling in the Balos Lagoon swimming taking a sun bath, and making lots of pictures and videos. We’re excited to share our journey with you, and a step-by-step guide to help you plan your own unforgettable adventure. So, if you’re ready to explore the azure waters, vibrant marine life, and breathtaking views of Balos Beach and Gramvousa Island, keep reading.

NOTE: Please note this blog was written in 2023, with the new measures in place, boats will no longer dock directly at Balos. Instead, they will anchor approximately 100 meters from the coast, allowing passengers to enjoy swimming for about 1.5 hours. Some tours may offer a small boat for passengers to disembark directly onto the beach.

Departure from Chania to Kissamos Port by bus

balos beach trip boat

Start your journey early in the morning by taking a bus or driving to Kissamos Port, which is about 25 km west of Chania. Kissamos Port is where you hop on a boat and start your journey to the magnificent Gramvousa Island and Balos Lagoon Beach.

In order to find out all the important information about the trip, we visited the main bus station in Chania a day before to inquire about the details. We found out that the departure from Chania is at 08:30, 11:00, and 15:30, and we need to take the boat at 10:45. This is the only time you can do so (at least for the May month). At the bus station, they were selling this as a full package – you buy the bus round trip and the boat vouchers that you need to exchange for tickets at the counter at Kissamos Port. It cost us 80 euros for two people (the price for the bus ticket from Chania and the ferry ticket).

You can also check the route information here https://www.e-ktel.com/en/

So the next day we took the 8:30 bus and in about one hour we were there. The not-so-convenient part is that you must wait another hour before the boat departs, but I suppose it’s worth the wait. Another option would be to rent the car for the period of your stay and be more flexible with the timing.

You can buy boat tickets separately, at the Kissamos Port or online in advance. The price for the boat ticket is around 29 euros per person.

The boat departure from Kissamos Port

balos beach trip boat

At 10:45 the boat takes you, firstly, to Gramvousa Island. It’s about 1 hour and a half ride with lots of breathtaking views. The boat is equipped with all the necessary amenities such as toilets, but also they have a bar and restaurant. In case you forget to take water with you, you’ll be able to buy it on the boat. They also have sodas, beers, and food like souflaki. A can of beer costs around 2 euros, whereas a pint of draft one is around 5. There are seats both inside and outside. Most people of course prefer outside on the top deck so you could enjoy the views.

Arrival on Gramvousa Island

balos beach trip boat

On arrival on the island, you have about 1 hour and a half of free time to explore the surroundings.

One option is to do a little hike to the Venetian fortress located on top of the cliff – it’s an old fort that dates back to 1579 and is a great place for taking panoramic shots. It’s a 10-15 min hike to the top, so it’s not that bad.

Another option would be just to stay on the beach and take a swim in the crystal-clear waters. The bay features a rusty shipwreck that has become a landmark of the area. It serves as an interesting destination for spear-fishermen and provides an ideal subject for those who enjoy photographing shipwrecks.

The views here are stunning and they make a great backdrop for your photos.

From Gramvousa Island to Balos Beach

balos beach trip boat

After visiting Gramvousa Island, the boat will head towards Balos Beach, where you will have a 2.5-hour break. It usually takes about 30 minutes to reach Balos Beach. As soon as you arrive at Balos, you’ll be mesmerized by its beauty – the crystal clear water and dazzling white and pink sand beach make for an unforgettable holiday destination. You can swim in the shallow waters around the lagoon, which are warm and cosy even on cold days. More detailed info about this beach you can find here: Balos Beach and Lagoon.

We spent the rest of our day sunbathing, swimming and making lots of pictures.

From Balos Beach back to Port of Kissamos

At around 16:00, the boat departed from Balos Beach and started its journey back to Kissamos Port. Make sure you don’t miss it! The ride was quite pleasant as we could see the beautiful sun setting over the horizon. We spent some time talking with other passengers on board while enjoying a few drinks from the bar. The staff were very friendly and made sure everyone had an enjoyable experience on their way back home. As we arrived at Kissamos Port at around 17:00, it felt like no time had passed since our departure in the morning – despite having explored two gorgeous places! It was truly a memorable day trip that will stay with us for years to come!

Ultimately, our full-day adventure to Balos Beach and Gramvousa Island from Chania was an experience that we would never forget. From the crystal clear waters of the lagoon at Balos Beach to the breathtaking views from the historic fortress on top of Gramvousa Island, it was truly a unique journey filled with stunning sights and unforgettable memories.

Gramvousa Island

We will get off the boat at Gramvousa island. It has a reputation as the “pirates’ island”. During the old ages its residents used to loot the passing boats.

It is famous for its Venetian fortress that once kept the Turks away. And also for the old ship wreck. Now it has become a distinctive land mark.

You may climb up the sheer rock to the castle ruins. Enjoy amazing views of the deep blue and green waters of the lagoon. In Gramvousa you will have time to swim. And also time to explore the area and try to find the hidden pirate treasure.

Balos Lagoon Tour

In the afternoon, we will board the boat to the Blue lagoon beach of Balos.

The boat will anchor about 10m (ten meters) from the beach giving the opportunity to our customers to swim in the crystal clear water and if they wish to swim to shore.

Balos paradise, renowned for its turquoise waters and pristine white sand, boasts wild natural beauty and captivating scenery. It is the most photographed beach on Crete. Visiting Balos Beach Lagoon: Crete’s Must-Visit Attraction

A visit to Balos Beach ended up being one of my favourite things I did in Crete. The scenery is even more beautiful than photos can depict. Goats roam along the mountainside and beach as crystal clear water gently laps at a pink sand shore, this is easily one of the most idyllic landscapes you will find in Europe. If you’re planning a visit to Crete, this is one thing that belongs on your itinerary. I’ve got everything you need to plan the perfect visit to Balos Bay and tons of photos in case you need more convincing.

Visiting Balos Beach Lagoon in Western Crete

I visited Balos as part of my road trip to Crete and visit to Athens and it ended up being a highlight of Greece for me. You can find all the technical information on how to best visit Balos Beach at the bottom of this post, but first let me tell you my experience and why you should visit Balos Beach

Waking Up Early for Balos Lagoon

It’s not very often I can say I’ve woken up at 4:30 AM and had a perfect day. In fact, I’m going to go on the record as saying it’s the only time it’s happened.

Rising before the sun is generally not my thing. But on this particular day, I was too excited to sleep. I had been looking forward to visiting Balos Beach before I even planned my trip to Crete. The views looked amazing and  I couldn’t wait to get there.

Sunrise over Kissamos Bay, Crete

Driving Gramvousa Peninsula

I chose to drive instead of taking the boat. Mostly because I already had a rental car and liked the freedom of being able to arrive and leave when I wanted to. It turned out to be the perfect decision for me.

While researching Crete, I had seen many accounts of the drive to Balos Beach being terrible. Many advised against driving, saying that it’s very possible to damage the underside of your car. After looking at some videos of the road I decided to risk it anyways.

A dirt road on the cliffside of Kissamos Bay, this road takes you to the parking lot for visiting Balos Bay Lagoon

On the dirt road up to the parking lot of Balos the sun just started to peak over the mountains. The only car on the road, the experience felt magical. Driving slowly, I put the window down and gazed over the water and sunrise.

A heard of goats look out over Kissamos Bay as the sun rises

I started to notice something, hundreds if not thousands of small insects flying up the mountain. It was bees. Making their morning commute to the wildflowers to bring back nectar and pollen to their hives. I couldn’t believe it. Up with the bees.

Of course, this is Greece so there were also small herds of goats dotting the mountainside as well.

Entrance to Balos Beach Parking Lot

The road itself wasn’t bad at all. It is narrow at some points and there are no guard rails so you do have to be mindful of how you drive. It took about 20-30 minutes to drive up because I did stop to take photos. Towards the top there is a gate. Now normally at this gate they collect a small fee for parking at Balos Beach so make sure you have change.

When I arrived at the gate it was locked. I wasn’t anticipating it so I got out to look if it was just an open and drive on and close behind you situation or a wait situation. While I investigated, a very disoriented man came out of the small building that is there. I’m pretty sure he was a goat herder and this poor man was so confused he came out in only his underpants and a shirt. He went to grab pants and then opened up the gate so I could drive through. My apologies to this Greek man for arriving so early.

Being the first person there, the parking lot was empty.

Hiking to Balos Beach

The sun had almost completely risen above the mountains but there were still long shadows creating really beautiful lighting over the landscape. Out of the car and on the short walk to the lookout points over Balos Beach the soil took on a red Martian-toned landscape with the glowing light of the sunrise. Am I romanticizing it a little bit? Possibly, but it truly felt like a special experience.

With time, more goats were awakening and charged past, eager to get to new grazing grounds. I arrived at the first lookout point over Balos Beach and was blown away. You know how sometimes you’ve seen plenty of photos and know what to expect but still end up impressed. This was that. It was way better than I was expecting.

Red stone stairs down to Balos Beach with a herd of goats and an impressive mountain in the background

The walk down didn’t take too long, about 30 minutes, but I realized I would not want to do this late in the day as there is no place to hide from the sun.

The beach itself has change rooms, a food stand, and some paid bathrooms as well. There are also lots of paid sun loungers if you are staying awhile.

Exploring the Pink Sand Beaches of Balos Lagoon

I wandered along the beach, looking for the fabled pink sand of Balos Beach. There isn’t much here, you do have better luck at Elafonisi Beach or nearby Falasarna Beach but there are still little pockets of pink sand along the waterline. The pink sand gets it colour from the crushed red shells of microorganisms found in the waters here. As tempting as it is, it’s important not to remove this sand from the beach as the pink sand is decreasing with increased tourism.

Red and pink sand made from crushed shells can be found on the beach at Balos Bay

The water here is unbelievably clear and beautiful shades of teal. I felt more like I was in the Rosario Islands of the Caribbean than Southern Europe. Balos Beach is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Europe .

Of course, a visit to the beach wouldn’t be complete without goats. They are a bit shy but they do graze alongside the beach.

A goat eats some grass on the beach with Balos Lagoon and cliffs behind it

By the time I was done exploring, I had spent about 2 hours at Balos Beach and tourists were just starting to arrive as I left.

Hiking Up from Balos Beach

The walk up the mountain back to the car isn’t too bad but even by 8:30 AM the heat of the sun is starting to build. If you are planning to do this later in the day I recommend lots of water, a good sun hat and maybe a sun umbrella if you are particularly sensitive.

The parking lot was starting to fill up as I drove out. The drive down the mountain was only about 15 minutes but there was a steady stream of oncoming vehicles.

Amazing Morning at Balos Beach Lagoon

This next part felt like a huge win. After being up for hours, I made it back to the hotel just in time to catch the tail end of breakfast and have a mini feast of Greek breakfast items like olive oil chocolate cake, Greek salad, and yogurt with honey. Cretan honey is a must try, I have to believe it is because the bees work so hard and commute up a mountain to get the best wildflowers.

Visiting Balos Beach was just the start of the perfect day because I still had an entire day to fill so I decided to head to Elafonisi Beach afterwards. I had planned them to be too separate days but I just was too excited to be in Crete so I ended up combining the day. If you’re more chill, you can easily spend most of the day relaxing on the beach at Balos and swimming in the waters there.

How to Get to Balos Beach

If you want to visit Balos Beach you have two main options: Drive to the parking lot above Balos Beach, or get a boat from Kissamos to Balos Beach and Gramvousa Island. Balos Beach is on the West side of Crete so the closest major city is Chania.

Driving to Balos Beach

If you prefer being in charge of your own schedule and are comfortable with narrow dirt roads, then you can drive to Balos Beach. One of the disadvantages is to beat the crowds, you do have to be up early. I would aim to be at Balos around 9-10 AM, but definitely before noon.

This is a good time to mention that I highly recommend purchasing the extra car insurance for your rental car in Crete. It’s the only place I’ve had to make use of it as my car was bumped in a parking lot at Kourtaliotiko Gorge. In Crete, I used DiscoverCars to find the best deal on a rental car and added on their extra insurance as well.

Driving up the dirt road to the Balos Beach parking lot took a bit longer than I expected, almost 30 minutes.

The directions you find on Google Maps to Balos Beach are accurate but I did find it tricky to spot the correct turnoff from the main highway to Balos Beach.

Sunrise over Kissamos Bay in Crete with beautiful shades of coral, pink, purple, and blue

Taking a Boat Cruise to Balos Beach and Gramvousa Island

The boat cruise does have advantages over driving as it’s the only way you can also visit Gramvousa Island which has a Venetian Fortress you can hike to with views of Balos. The ferries to Balos Beach leave from Kissamos Port around 10:30 AM so you don’t have to wake up as early as if you were driving yourself. The ferry is about 1 hour each way.

If you have a rental car you can book this ferry boat tour that leaves from Kissamos. There are also sailing tours that leave from Kissamos. If you are exploring Crete without a rental car, there are tour options that include a bus from Chania , Heraklion , or Rethymno .

Where to Stay Near Balos Beach

I recommend staying outside of a major city while visiting Balos Beach and other nearby beaches. You save time on driving and accommodation options are a lot more affordable than in cities like Chania or Rethymon.

I stayed for three nights in the area and would have happily stayed longer. Look for hotels around Falasarna or Kissamos while visiting this part of Western Crete. Many hotels in this area are seasonally operated only as winter is not a popular travel season in Crete.

Casa D’Irene Deluxe Hotel – I stayed here. I highly recommend this hotel. The room I stayed in also had a kitchenette and there was free parking available. There was a small rooftop pool and the best breakfast spread I had in Crete. Super cozy, great location off of the main highway. Would happily stay here again!

Kaliviani Traditional Hotel – This is the place to stay if you want views of Falasarna Beach from your room. This is in an excellent location as it is right on the road to Falasarna Beach. Beautiful rooms and balconies to watch the sunrise from.

Nautilus Bay Hotel – Located in Kissamos, this is the place to stay if you want to be on the beach. While the beach can’t compete with Balos Beach, it’s still a great option if you want to wake up to the sounds of the sea. Beautiful rooms, a pool, and a great location.

Like this post? Pin it for later!

Balos Beach on Western Crete is one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece and is well worth a visit. You can visit by hiking to the beach or by taking a ferry. The beach itself has pink sand and welcoming goats that roam the shoreside.

Great and informative description… excellent photos. The data clearly are revealing natural and cultural values of Crete…

Thank you for that Greetings from Lithuania in EU

Glad you enjoyed the post about Balos Beach!

Lovely helpful information. My husband and I are visiting in a couple months and want to go to Balos beach. We are planning on renting a car but a there are mixed reviews out there about whether you need a 4 wheel drive car or not. Did you need a 4 wheel drive car or would an all wheel drive car work?

Hi Melanie, When I visited Balos Beach I just rented a regular rental car, it wasn’t 4 wheel drive. The road to Balos is a dirt road and there are stones but at the time that I went there weren’t any ruts and it was dry so it was fine to use a car to traverse it. There were some large stones but if you are driving carefully you can see them and go around. If you are concerned about driving it, rather than the increased cost of a 4wd for your entire rental period, it may be more economical to rent the car and just drive to where the boat for Balos departs from in Kissamos.

Beachgoers Scatter As Fishing Boat Runs Ashore In North Carolina

balos beach trip boat

Would you rather see this or a shark coming at you in the ocean?

Beachgoers in North Carolina had a scary interruption to their vacation when an out of control fishing boat ran ashore at Atlantic Beach.

Video shows the fishing boat, which is moving with some pretty good speed, headed straight towards the shore as the crowd on the beach begins to scatter in case the boat makes its way onto the land.

Luckily the vessel comes to a stop as it runs aground, and there weren’t any swimmers in the water who were in the boat’s path. But according to WNCT , at least seven people were on the boat at the time and two were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

The captain of the boat, Joseph Rivenbark, was reportedly given field sobriety tests by responders at the scene, and the owners were requested to remain on scene until investigators arrived.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by NC Wildlife, and a towboat later arrived to take the boat back out to sea.
