29 hands I have been fortunate to be dealt 2 29 hands in the last year. The first was very conventional and was acknowledged by all.
The second was dealt to me and the hand was played, but my wife had first count and closed the game out. She contends that since I did not get to count the hand that it does not officially count as a 29 hand. I contend that the hand was dealt and played and the fact that I was unable to count it was irrelavant.
I will be intersted in hearing form your constituents.

29 Hand Whether it counts towards the game is , in my opinion, irrelavent. We are headed to the trophy shop with those cards and getting them mounted for display. Congrats!!

My students thank you Thanks for your template! With one week left before Christmas, I’m opening up my Tech Ed lab for students to make gifts for their families. The closing of GM in our town (Janesville, WI) in 2008 has left 50% of our student population at or below the poverty level. If anyone has more ideas for small woods projects we can quickly craft (I have a small woods shop in our lab), I will appreciate hearing them. [email protected]

How to Make a Cribbage Board
Follow along to learn how to make a diy cribbage board, what is a cribbage board.
This popular card game requires a board with multiple holes to track your progress with small pins. Building a cribbage board out of wood is a very popular woodworking project! You can refer to this popular link to learn how to play cribbage .
Now let's learn how to build a cribbage board!
1) Choose a piece of wood. You could choose from a Live Edge Charcuterie Board , a Live Edge Oval, or S4S Lumber .
We would suggest something that is not overly figured as a wild grain pattern in combination with all the drilled holes may not be desirable. Save the Bird's Eye Maple for a future project! Maple and Walnut are commonly used for cribbage boards.
2) Cut the board down to your desired size. You could keep things simple and begin with a rectangular shape, or spice it up with a rounded top side. Using a roundover router bit , you can easily soften the sides for that little extra touch.
If you really want to spice it up, consider using a No-Leak Resin Mold and combine your wood with a complimentary colour of epoxy .
If you aren't equipped to mill your own wood, our S4S Lumber would be perfect.
3) Sand, sand, and then keep sanding.
4) Using template tape , adhere the cribbage board template to your wood.
5) Make a coffee! Grab your drill and a decent drill bit. Trust us, it will make a difference. Our recommendation for success is using a quality Famag drill bit with a Depth Adjusting Collar .
6) Apply a durable wood finish such as Rubio Monocoat Pure Oil 2C . One coat and you're done!

What is a Travel Cribbage Board and Why Should I Get One?
Travel cribbage boards are compact, portable versions of traditional cribbage boards, a staple for the card game cribbage. These boards have everything you need to keep score during a game, including numbered holes for pegs and storage for cards.
Why should you get one? Here are three main reasons:
- Portability : Travel cribbage boards are typically designed to be lightweight and compact, making them ideal for on-the-go gaming.
- Durability : These boards are often made with sturdy materials to withstand the rigors of travel.
- Fun : Playing cribbage can be a great way to pass time during long trips.
How Portable are Travel Cribbage Boards, Really?
Travel cribbage boards are highly portable. Their size and weight are specifically designed for easy transportation. Most travel cribbage boards can fit in a backpack, handbag, or even a large pocket. Moreover, their built-in storage for cards and pegs eliminates the need for carrying extra bags or containers.
Key Features to Look for Before Buying
When purchasing a travel cribbage board, consider the following features:
It should be compact enough for easy transport.
The board should be lightweight to avoid adding unnecessary weight to your luggage.
Ideally, the board should be made from durable material to withstand the rigors of travel.
Look for a design that appeals to you aesthetically and functionally.
The board should have a place to store pegs and cards.
Differences Between a Standard Cribbage Board and a Travel Cribbage Board
Standard cribbage boards and travel cribbage boards serve the same purpose—to keep track of the score during a cribbage game. However, they differ in a few key ways:
- Size and Weight : Travel cribbage boards are designed to be smaller and lighter than standard boards.
- Material : Travel boards are usually made of more durable materials to withstand being carried around.
- Storage : Travel cribbage boards often have built-in storage for pegs and cards, a feature not always present in standard boards.
How to Maintain Your Cribbage Board When Travelling
Maintaining your travel cribbage board is crucial for its longevity. Here are some tips:
- Cleaning : Wipe the board with a dry cloth to remove dust. Use a damp cloth for stubborn stains, but avoid soaking the board as it may warp.
- Storage : When not in use, keep the board in a cool, dry place. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight or in extreme temperatures.
- Handling : Handle the board with care. Although it’s designed for travel, it’s still a game piece that could break under harsh treatment.
In conclusion, travel cribbage boards are a fantastic option for game enthusiasts looking to take their cribbage gameplay on the go. With their portability, durability, and added features such as storage, they provide a convenient and engaging way to enjoy cribbage wherever you travel.

How To Make a Cribbage Board
By Eric Trion
JIGS AND SUPPLIES:
› CRIBBAGE JIG: FULL TEMPLATE
› PEGS: METAL CRIBBAGE PEGS
› WOOD FINISH: BUTCHER BLOCK OIL
While cribbage has been around since the early 17th century it remains popular as a simple, easy-to-learn strategy game. By using a simple board, pegs and a deck of cards two or more players use strategy and card counting skills to advance pegs around the board to a win.
And, as a woodworking project, a cribbage board offers woodworkers of all skills a way to be creative and build a fun and useful game (or gift).
In this guide learn how to make your own cribbage board that will last for decades.
Page Contents
Step 1: Choose Your Cribbage Board Size
Before buying wood, its best to decide if you will go with a standard-sized board (~6 x 17 inches) or build a large board or custom shape.
And, for a first-time cribbage board build, sticking with a standard board size will let you learn the process, and from there, you can venture into larger or non-standard dimensions. And, in standard sizes, plenty of drill jigs are available to allow for precision holes.
Step 2: Pick a Wood and Build Style
For many, choosing a wood is the hardest part of any woodworking project.
And with a cribbage board, the decisions can go from a simple oak board to an end-grain exotic wood. With that in mind, your choice will be influenced by budget, tools, and skill. A few popular options are:
- Exotic wood blank using Acacia, Purple Heart, or other sustainable species harvested according to international guidelines.
- Domestic figured woods like curly or Birdseye maple.
- End-grain designs that use an exotic or domestic wood cut to show the end grain in a pattern, like the Purple Heart end-grain board pictured above.
- Or, live edge slabs that highlight the natural look of the board.
Step 3: Glue Your Board (Optional)
As you guessed, if your choice in boards is to glue strips of wood or build an end-grain design, then you’ll need to glue the board using clamps.
Here are a few tips when gluing:
- Layout your grain pattern before gluing. For the best visual appeal, alternate grains and avoid repetition.
- Then, use a wood glue like Titebond II that is formulated for woodworking.
- Lastly, avoid excessive clamp pressure
As the directions aren’t always clear, always let the cribbage board sit overnight before running through a planer or sanding. Doing so allows time for the glue to cure and fully set, which will help prevent joint failure.
Step 4: Rough Sanding
While preferences vary among woodworkers, most like to do rough sanding before cutting any piece of wood to size. Why? Well, this allows for any snipe or other defects to be fixed (or not) and lets the final piece be finished with just hand-sanding.
Here are a few tips when planing or sanding:
- Never plane end-grained wood as it will risk rip-out of grain or SEVERE damage to your planer
- When planing, use light passes and set up your planer to avoid snipe. Most woodworkers make projects an extra 2 or 3 inches long to allow cutting snipe off.
- Start with 60-grit paper, then move to 100, 150 and 220-grits.
- Avoid excessive down pressure when sanding, as it can leave swirl marks
- Lastly, always use high-grade sandpaper for the best wood removal
Step 5: Buy a Cribbage Board Jig
The thought of laying out a cribbage board by hand and precisely drilling holes would be a challenge for even professionals.
So, instead of attempting this by hand, pick up a jig. The standard size is a 1/8-inch kit that makes a compact-sized board. But larger pegs are great for less delicate or older fingers, so some choose 1/4-inch equipment with extra large-sized pegs.
Why do you need this jig now? Well, the jig sets the size of the board:
- A 1/8-inch kit requires a board roughly 5-1/2 by 17-inches
- And a 1/4-inch kit requires a 6-1/2 by 27-inch board
However, these vary by manufacturer (Rockler’s brand is shown above), so having the template first will save you later.
Step 6: Cut Your board to Finish Size
Once your project is sanded to 100 or 150 grit, the next step is to cut the board to the proper width and length.
Following the size chart supplied with your cribbage jig, you can cut your board to the correct width and length. Also, optional at this step, you can use a trim router to provide a slight quarter round (or other style) to the board’s edge. Most woodworkers prefer simple with this type of project.
Step 7: Drill The Peg Holes
With the board cut to size, clamp the jig to the board and drill holes according to the instructions. As you can see by the picture above, a high-quality template set will have indexing pins that will keep the template locked in place.
However, woodworkers prefer using wood clamps to keep the jig locked down. As a tip, this also prevents wood chips from finding their way under the jig, creating issues with the drill bit depth.
Step 8: Finish Sanding
Now that the holes are drilled, the last step before applying a finish is to finish sanding the surface.
A random orbital sander, as shown above, works best in this step. While any sander will work, at this step, it’s best to use a high-quality random orbit sander that will help prevent swirls. Woodworkers will always debate, but using a sander from Festool with proper technique will give you the best chance at a quality finish.
Before calling sanding is done, be sure to hold your workpiece up to the light and look for swirls or imperfections. You may find around the holes that drill bits have left some slight tear-out that should be sanded before moving on to the next step.
Step 9: Apply A Low Build-up Finish
It’s tempting to put polyurethane on a cribbage board.
But rather than clog the holes with a finish like that, woodworkers use a penetrating finish like a mineral or tung oil to protect the wood.
And as a bonus, these types of wood finish are generally toxin-free and food safe, making them a healthy choice for application and use.
Step 10: Let Dry and Use
Most wood finishes will take at least overnight for the finish to dry and be ready to use. By adding a deck of cards and high-quality pre-made metal cribbage pegs, you’ll be prepared to play.

Cribbage is an old, popular board game, both timeless and endlessly fun. Creating a cribbage board is a fabulous way to flex your woodworking skills while also crafting a bespoke keepsake you and your friends can use to pass the time. You'll only need a handful of supplies and a touch of carpentry know-how, and soon you'll be moving your pegs along the handmade track. We'll show you how to cut the board, drill the peg holes, and put the finishing touches on your game board.
- You'll also need a framing square, a clamp, some paper, a printer, and some scissors.
- The type of wood isn't important, but generally lighter wood will work better.
- This cribbage board template is of the 120 hole type. There will be 397 holes to drill in total. The main 360 holes follow along three rows of 120 each that go around the curved end of the board and back up the middle. Most of the holes are about 1cm apart from one another.
- You should now have a block of wood that is the same size as the template that's glued to it, except for the rounded side of the template.
- Every couple of minutes, turn the drill off and touch the bit to check its temperature. Let it cool for a few minutes if it's hot.
- You may also want to use a small sharpie, pen, or a very small paintbrush to write the different labels on the board as shown in the template.

About This Article
To make a cribbage board, start by printing out an online cribbage board template, then attaching it to a block of wood that’s between ½ inch and ¾ inch thick and cutting the wood to the shape of the template. Next, use a ⅛-inch bit to drill the holes in the template, making sure to turn off the drill every few minutes so it doesn’t get too hot. Once the holes are drilled, remove the template and sand the board with 220-grit sandpaper until it’s smooth. Then, paint the board as desired before applying 3 coats of a water-based polyurethane finish. For tips on how to use a framing square and a clamp to drill holes that are properly aligned, read on! How to Play Travel Cribbage with 3-4 Players
- June 13, 2021
Sharing our customers' best ideas for using 2-track boards to play with 3 or 4 players -- perfect for traveling and making new friends!
how many people can play on this board? 2? thanks so much -rv
Although the typical cribbage board has 2 tracks, tabletop boards often come with 3 or 4 tracks for playing with 3 or 4 players. But in a pinch, you can make any 2-track cribbage board -- like our Travel Cribbage Board -- work for 3 or 4 players. Here's how:
3-player cribbage on a 2-track board
Customer Kaylie shared with us her family secret for using 2 tracks for 3 players: the third player plays the course backwards . The 3rd player uses a unique set of pegs, starts at the finish hole and ends at the start hole.
Kaylie says that, in the rare event that two players need to share the same hole (say, player 2 and player 3), the 3rd player just hopscotches tracks to player 1's track for that pegging, then goes right back.
The third set of pegs may have to be MacGyvered to look distinct from the other pegs, such as toothpicks, matchsticks, pushpins, or kindling slivers.
However, what some other customers have done with Walnut Studiolo's Travel Cribbage Board is to order the Travel Cribbage Board with Cast Pegs (which has a larger storage tube), and then add-on an extra set of Wire Cribbage Pegs . The wire pegs look distinct from the cast pegs (particularly the red set!) and they are skinny enough to fit inside the same storage tube.
Kaylie says though it may not be perfect, they've been doing it this way in her family since she was a kid!
3-player travel cribbage boards
For families that are traveling with 3 players, we designed a 3-track travel cribbage board! Check out our new Travel Cribbage Board designs, two sizes with 3-tracks and 6 pegs:
Deluxe Travel Cribbage Board
The Deluxe Travel Cribbage Board has 3 tracks, 3 sets of cast metal pegs, and self-contained card storage for an (included) full-sized deck of cards.

Mini Deluxe Travel Cribbage Board
The Mini Deluxe Travel Cribbage Board has 3 tracks, 3 sets of cast metal pegs, and self-contained card storage for an (included) HALF-sized deck of cards.
Shop 3-Track Half-Size Travel Cribbage Board >>>
4-player cribbage on a 2-track board
4 players is even more straightforward on a 2-track board: the players simply play as teams, with 2 people on each team. Each player pegs his own points using the team's pegs.
Cribbage rules of play for 3-4 players
For the actual card play, there is really only a small change to the number of cards dealt, and the number of cards discarded to the crib per hand.
For 3 players: deal 5 cards to each player (instead of 6) and 1 card face-down to the table for the dealer's crib. Each player then discards 1 card to the crib instead of 2, for a total of 4 cards in the crib (1 from each of 3 players + 1 dealt facedown).
For 4 players: deal 5 cards to each player (instead of 6). Each player then discards 1 card to the crib instead of 2, for a total of 4 cards in crib (1 from each of 4 players).

17 Cribbage Board Design Ideas [Pictures]
- Date Updated: March 17, 2022
- Time to read: 6 min.
Cribbage boards are a beautiful thing.
It’s the mark of a good woodworker to make your own cribbage boards at some point.
While I do dabble in woodworking projects on the side, I’m nowhere near this level of mastery.
Here are a few of my favorite Cribbage board design ideas to log away for later projects (or just to order!).
Want to take your Cribbage game to the next level? Check out this massive list of strategies for improving your game!
Table of Contents
Wine Barrel Cribbage Board
With a wife who loves wine and raw wood, this one, I think, would be a huge hit with her.
It looks rustic yet classic. I imagine this one isn’t too hard to make, but it still gives you a lot of bang for your buck.
Not that you have a lot of wine barrels around, but a lot of local wineries will sell them or even give them away if you only ask.
Lake Cribbage Boards
As a native Michigander, I can’t help but have a natural attraction to lakes and bodies of water.
I grew up on Lake Huron, vacationed on Mullet Lake (yes, that’s a real lake name), and literally worked in a city called Lake City.
To integrate my love (and I bet a lot of others too) of lakes and Cribbage in one beautiful board is a dream come true.
Simple And Extra Large
Not every board has to be fancy to be beautiful.
This one is simple yet great to look at.
And best of all, it’s extra-large.
This is great for helping with little hands (like those kids whose fine motor skills aren’t quite great at grabbing the tiny pegs) and with older hands who don’t have as much facility as they used to.
Plus, it looks sweet.
No Cribbage board collection is complete without a large board to play with.
Customized Name
Family heirlooms are important to a lot of people and to me.
Why not take pride in your family name?
A board like this, made out of quality wood and customized with the name of your choice, is a perfect gift or DIY goal.
Just watch out if you’ve got a long last name like mine! It may raise the price a bit.
Compass Cribbage Board
For those who love navigation, such as sailors or explorers, there’s something instinctively attractive about the compass directions.
This board is wonderfully made around the compass and looks great.
There’s a lot of intricate work on it, so it might not be a good DIY Cribbage design goal, but it’s certainly something to look at buying or handing off to a solid woodworker you know.
Compact Travel Cribbage Board
While you certainly can play Cribbage without a board (check out our advice on that front in the other article), it’s worthwhile to check out small travel cribbage boards.
I’ll be honest, most of them look cheap and feel cheap.
But this one looks classy and is made well.
It’s on my birthday list (let’s see if my wife gets the hint!).
Board With Hidden Peg Slot
Most boards only use a simple slot on the bottom to keep the pegs in, so when you see a unique idea for storing pegs like this one, it catches a Cribbage enthusiast’s attention.
It looks great on its own, but the storage space in the bottom like this is a real talking point.
Fishy Pine Board
I enjoy fishing, but my Grandpa loves it!
Sure, while he has a lot of Cribbage boards, I know this one will be a huge hit with him.
The Pine has a unique look, and not everyone likes it on their boards. It’s not hard to use this design with other woods and finishes, though, for a different style.
Maple Cribbage Board With Drawers For Cards And Pegs
Maple has got to be one of the most beautiful woods out there.
It looks great, and it’s pretty hard too.
It’ll last you a while.
But the thing that catches my eye the most is the drawers. Now, you have a place to store your pegs and your deck of cards. Awesome!
Star Wars Cribbage Board
Yes, I love Star Wars.
Yes, I want this board more than anything else in the world.
There’s no way I could make this work as a DIY design, but it’s something to aspire to, I guess.
The good thing about this design is that most Star Wars fans also usually enjoy “nerdy” things like playing cards, so you may have a double-whammy gift on your hands here.
Live Edge Board
A lot of folks are obsessed with live edge wood projects from table to floating shelves and, yes, Cribbage boards.
This one looks great, but yours won’t look exactly the same.
That’s the beauty of live edge wood!
Every one is a unique work of art, and it’s a great thing to show off when people come over.
Cribbage Table
If you’re into Cribbage so much you want to dedicate a whole piece of furniture to the game (and if you’re reading this article, you probably do!), check out the classic Cribbage table.
Some are simple conversions of already existing tables like this one, while there are some are ground-up new pieces made specifically for Cribbage.
This design idea is next on my list of wood projects to tackle. I already have a second-hand table I picked up to refinish and drill holes in.
Ocean Cribbage Board
Not a ton of designs go into the 3D world, but this Ocean-themed option is truly an eye-catcher.
Whether you play on it a ton or use it only occasionally and display it the rest of the time, it’s certainly something to look into.
Bear Cribbage Board
When I was looking through my many (many) saved Pins for boards to include on this list, one of my songs was helping me.
When he saw this bear one, he told me it had to make it on the list.
It was “too cute” in his words to leave off.
Golf-Theme Board
I enjoy golf but not as much as a lot of people.
To be sure, this golf board looks pretty sweet.
Don’t confuse it with the rare game, Cribbage Golf, which is a different type of Cribbage .
For more types, click the link above.
Paddle Board
My mom is a huge fan of paddleboarding, and she also enjoys playing the card game, though not as much as me.
Her birthday is in October, so I still have a while to make this one as a gift.
If you like paddleboarding too, this is a great design for you.
Natural Branch
There are a whole host of board styles like this one: all-natural.
Branches are a common option, but anything that’ll last a while when finished and can fit 121 or 61 holes will be a cool idea to try out.
My grandfather-in-law has one made out of deer antler. I’ll take a picture and add it to this list at some point.

Tips for Building Your California Mission

Ingredients For Salt Dough Building Material
Directions for Making Salt Dough
We are starting to get a lot of questions about Mission Reports and building the models. ?It?s not easy to find information on the Internet, but here are some basic tips to help you get started. ?
Some of the most common materials used to build the models are: sugar cubes, cardboard, plywood, Styrofoam, clay, and salt dough. ?If you go to a craft store you will discover that some companies sell mission building kits. ?Canyon Foam Designs Mission Model Kits are sold at many Michael?s and JoAnn Fabric Stores.
For decorating or detailing the model once it is built, anything goes. ?Kids have used everything from dried pasta to frosting to toothpaste! ?Be creative!
Here are a few basic tips on constructing the project:
- Start with a base (22″ x 24″) of either plywood or cardboard. ?Cardboard works well for complete cardboard missions, but use the plywood if your models will be made with dough, clay, or sugar cubes.
- On the base, draw placement lines for the church walls, courtyard walls, bell tower walls, fountains, and walkways.
- Regardless of the material, walls should be constructed to be about 3 inches tall. ?
- You may want to leave the roof off, or only make a half-roof so that you can add desired features inside the buildings (i.e. padre’s quarters, baptism fountain, candle making area).
- If you choose to add a roof, roof tiles can be made by gluing elbow macaroni, rigatoni, or lasagna to cardboard and then painting them a brownish red.
- If you choose to use a salt dough, this is something that can be made at home for very little cost. ?Below is a recipe that is very easy to make. ?Once the desired shape is made, the dough can be baked for a very sturdy material. If there are any rough edges, a piece of fine grade sandpaper can be used to smooth out the spots.
- Mix the salt and flour together, then gradually add the water until the dough becomes elastic. If your mixture turns out too sticky, simply add more flour. If it turns out too crumbly, add more water.
- Knead the dough until it feels like Play-Doh. ?
- ?Get out rolling pins, cups, bowls, rulers, cookie cutters, plastic utensils, and let the fun begin!
- *If you want colored dough, mix food coloring, powdered drink mix, or paint into the water before adding it to the dry ingredients. Or you can paint your creations after they are dry.
- Painted keepsakes will need to be sealed on all sides with clear varnish or floor wax for a glossy finish.
- To store your salt dough, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or place it in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It?s best if you use it within 24 hours.
There are also two good books to use to help you build your Mission.

Grab your cards and play some cribbage, a local cribbage clubs holds sessions for beginners every tuesday..
Nika Megino , Patch Staff
By Tracy Yott
If you walk into the Centerville Round Table Pizza in Fremont on a Tuesday or Wednesday night, you will see a group of people in the corner having a great time.
The game they are playing is cribbage, a two-person card game dating back to England during the early 1630s. It came across the pond with the Pilgrims and has flourished ever since, especially during the years of the Great Depression.
Find out what's happening in Newark with free, real-time updates from Patch.
In 1979, the American Cribbage Congress (ACC) was formed to standardize the rules and promote the game on a national basis. Soon after, the ACC Grass Roots program was formed to promote cribbage through organized play at the home town level.
One of 184 active clubs in the U.S. and Canada, the members of Grass Roots Club No. 43 can be found every Tuesday and Wednesday evening “salting the crib” and avoiding the dreaded “string of pearls.”
During the summer, Grass Roots Club 43 Director Tracy Yott initiated a beginners' club on Tuesday evenings to welcome those players that haven’t played in a long time or would like to learn how to play cribbage. No entry fee or membership is required.
Players are introduced to tournament-style cribbage, improving their play by learning new strategies and, most importantly, making new friends.
By August, the new program was a success and it was decided to continue the beginners’ sessions through the remainder of 2011. Once players feel comfortable, they can try their luck on Wednesday nights with the “Big Boys.”
With members of all ages and from all walks of life, Grass Roots 43 has thrived since it was chartered in 1987.
Playing in various establishments in Newark and Fremont over the years, the club currently has 26 members from as far away as South San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose.
With an average of 19 players each week on Wednesday nights during the 2010-11 season, the club holds a nine-game tournament where each player faces nine random opponents.
Of the $11 entry fee, $10 goes to create a prize pool, which is awarded to the top scores (25 percent of the total number of players) for the evening. The Grass Roots points system allows for rating players locally, regionally and nationally.
Yott was introduced to cribbage while stationed at Treasure Island in 1983. It wasn’t until 2004 that he learned of the ACC and GR 43. He tells newcomers that he has learned more about playing the game strategically in the last seven years than in the previous 21 years of playing “kitchen table” games.
The ACC sanctions tournaments almost every weekend of the year at various locations in North America. The largest, the ACC Open, held every February in Reno, NV, attracts an average of 1,000 players, all vying for the $10,000 first prize. The annual Tournament of Champions, an invitation-only tournament, is held the same weekend, typically attended by approximately 500 players.
ACC Grass Roots Club No. 43 welcomes all players of any skill level to join members on a free trial basis on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
For more information, go to www.cribbage.org , email [email protected] or call Tracy Yott at 510-793-6472. Or simply show up any Tuesday or Wednesday between 6 and 6:15 p.m. at Round Table Pizza, 37480 Fremont Blvd., Fremont.

California Missions Project Book (Plus Free Printables!)
by gatheringgraces on January 28th, 2014 at 8:51 am || Posted in: Blogs
My 4th grader is enrolled in Seton Home Study. However, since they are an institution based in the East Coast AND they cater to all of the U.S., they don’t make state-specific textbooks. I’m not too concerned since my goal is to raise knowledgeable and God-loving Catholic kids. Seton’s books are definitely tailored towards Catholicity.
Still…I know that a sad fact in this new world is that you must know what the majority knows in order to compete, too. I don’t ever want my daughter to get shorthanded because she doesn’t know what “regular” California students are expected to know.
That’s why I’m thankful that I had the chance to be a schoolteacher for 5 years (before homeschool). I know what California students are supposed to know (before Common Core too!) So, even though the California Missions isn’t covered in detail by Seton, I’ve decided to create a whole project for it!
Most 4th graders are only required to research ONE California Mission and then do a report on it, possibly a model for extra credit. But we have the luxury of (almost) unlimited resources and I know what my child can handle. Therefore, we’ll be doing ALL 21 Missions, one mission per week!
I’ve put together a binder for my daughter to use. For each mission, there is a Research Note/Report Outline page (with Illustration and Grading Scale pages). It helps that I bought a 24 Tabs Divider , so she can easily arrange each mission in order. At the end of the binder, I placed the Extra Info page so she knows which website to go to for information on each mission, and even look up the address on Google Maps for a street view ! On the front, I made a nice little CA Cover showing all the mission locations in California for quick reference.
The good news for you is that you can get these pages as FREE PRINTABLES!
You can print out one copy each if you just need to do one mission report for school. Or you could go homeschool crazy and print the outline, illustration, and grading scale pages for each mission…that’s 21 times! Then 3 hole punch, put in binder with tabs, place cover in front, and extra info in back….and voila! California Missions Project Book for 4th Grade!
She’s truly enjoying this project and can’t wait to visit some of the missions this year. I’m excited she gets to practice doing research and typing up 5 paragraph reports – every week! She’s learning so much, not just about the missions and their impact on California, but also about the Writing Process , how to use different resources, and how to type. Also, my husband is quite excited to help and discuss with her all the things she’s learning about!
Grab all the pages for the Free California Missions Report Printables right now! Please do let me know when you use it and how it goes. Thanks!
