Life at Sea Cruises is launching a ship that will take a three-year voyage beginning in November with a starting price of $30,000 per person per year.

Here’s what it’s like inside the ship.

The cruise liner, the MV Gemini, will begin its voyage in Istanbul on Nov. 1, 2023. It also will pick up passengers in Miami and Barcelona.

The refurbished ship has 400 cabins to accommodate more than 1,000 travelers. Over the three-year voyage, passengers on the vessel will reach 375 ports in 135 countries, traveling more than 130,000 miles to reach them.

While living in the comfort of their staterooms, travelers will see all seven continents and stop at many destinations, including 13 Wonders of the World. Unlike most cruise ships, the MV Gemini will spend several days in port to allow guests to fully explore each destination.

When guests are not traveling out on land, they will be able to enjoy many amenities onboard, such as dining, entertainment and a business center with offices, meeting rooms and a library.

The MV Gemini also will include a 24-hour on-call hospital with a pharmacy and dentist where passengers can be treated free of charge.

MV Gemini Deck Plans: Unveiling Comfort and Luxury

Described by Life at Sea Cruises as offering "the ultimate bucket list cruise without having to sacrifice the comforts of home," MV Gemini has undergone extensive refurbishments and modernization ahead of its three-year journey.

MV Gemini offers 400 cabins across five of the seven passenger decks. Cabin options range from 130-square-foot virtual inside cabins, providing an HD screen window illusion, to spacious Oceanview cabins spanning from 142 to 160 square feet. For those seeking added luxury, the ship boasts 260-square-foot Junior Suites and Balcony Suites with living spaces of 210 square feet and verandas measuring either 44 or 112 square feet. All cabins feature a light and contemporary decor to enhance your cruising experience.

The ship's public areas are equally impressive, featuring multiple dining and bar options, an auditorium, sun deck, swimming pool, and even a golf simulator. The cruise promises entertainment, enrichment seminars, volunteering and philanthropic opportunities at select ports of call, as well as optional shore excursions.

MV Gemini goes above and beyond by offering a 24-hour on-call fully equipped medical center at no additional charge, a rare feature in the cruise industry. For $30,000 a Year, This Beautiful Ship Could Be Your New Home

For less than it would cost to annually rent a studio apartment in New York City, you could make MV Gemini, a 537-foot luxury cruise ship, your new home. As reported by CNN , Life at Sea Cruises, the company that operates the ship, is offering a three-year, 130,000-mile journey starting at $30,000 per person per year. (For reference, the average studio rent in NYC is $3,280 per month , or about $39,000 per year.) Leaving from Istanbul on November 1 of this year, the three-year schedule includes stops at 375 ports and 175 countries, with visits to iconic architectural sites such as the Taj Mahal , the Pyramids of Giza , the Great Wall of China, and Machu Pichu. “The MV Gemini is designed to be the embodiment of living where you vacation,” Mike Petterson, managing director of Life at Sea Cruises, tells AD.  

The coworking spaces on board make the trip accessible for remote workers. 

Built in 1992, the vessel will be outfitted with a full-service business center, in addition to traditional cruise amenities like restaurants and entertainment spaces, to make the voyage accessible to remote workers. According to a press release, the center will include meeting rooms, offices, a library, and a lounge, in addition to free Wi-Fi across the ship. Other onboard facilities include a hospital (which will be free to guests), a sundeck and swimming pool, auditorium, wellness center, gym, and salon. 

Alcohol at dinner is included in the price of the trip.

“We’ve designed the ship and its amenities to be as action-packed and exciting as our travel itinerary—from onboard entertainment, performances, and lectures to our Enrichment Series and volunteer programs,” Petterson adds. “Not only will you embark on a bucket list three-year adventure, but you may also even pick up a new hobby or skill while aboard.” When passengers aren’t tanning, working, or exploring a port, there will be the opportunities to take classes, like dance or music, and attend various programming, like singles mixers for those traveling solo. 

A balcony stateroom on the ship can cost up to $109,999 per person per year. 

Though the amenities will be the same for all guests, pricing depends largely on the type of cabin they will call home for the next three years. Virtual Inside staterooms, which are 130 square feet, start at $29,000 per person per year, while Balcony Suites can cost as much as $109,999 per person per year. Participants must sign on for all three years; however, Life at Sea Cruises will allow two people or couples to share a cabin throughout the 36 months—together they’d book one room, and would alternate time onboard. And, don’t worry, you won’t be sidelined from your friends and family while away: According to the company, passengers can have guests visit them any time for free.

The price is all-inclusive and things like port fees and taxes, laundry, housekeeping, and drinks such as soda, juice, tea, coffee, and alcohol at dinner are just a few of the covered perks onboard the MV Gemini. Solo travelers will get a 15% discount on the price of a double room and a minimum down payment of $45,000 is required.

Gemini Kicks Off Miray Cruises’ 2024 Program

Miray Cruises kicked off its 2024 summer program in late March. Continuing its operations in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Turkey-based cruise line is now offering a series of three- and four-night cruises to Greece and Turkey.

Sailing from the ports of Piraeus, Kusadasi, and Cesme, the itineraries take place onboard the 1,074-guest Gemini.

Throughout late October, the vessel offers a total of 60 departures visiting destinations that include Mykonos and Santorini.

In addition to its three homeports, the Gemini is also scheduled to visit Patmos and Rhodes during its summer program.

One of the itineraries sees the 1992-built cruise ship offering a three-night cruise to the Greek Isles and Turkey.

The cruise sails from Piraeus and Kusadasi and includes a full day visit to Santorini, as well as half-day stops in Mykonos and Patmos.

The 2024 program is highlighted by a series of themed sailings, including the second edition of the Tango Festival at Sea, which sets sail on May 5.

The Gemini is also receiving local artists, including the singer Kuşum Aydın, who boards the ship for a short cruise on April 7.

Acquired by Miray Cruises in 2020 , the Gemini sailed for a series of operators during its three-decade sailing career.

Originally built for Crown Cruise Line, the 20,000-ton vessel also sailed for Cunard Line, Star Cruises, Quail Cruises, Celestyal Cruises, and more.

In 2023, Life at Sea Cruises also planned to convert the ship into a residential vessel for a three-year world cruise . The project, however, was later abandoned.

Considered a mid-sized ship, the Gemini currently offers a selection of traditional amenities, such as a nightclub, a show lounge, a pool deck, and a series of bars.

The vessel is also equipped with an à la carte restaurant and a self-service eatery, a kids’ club, a casino, duty-free shops, a spa, and a beauty salon.

Life at Sea Cruises debuts world's first three-year cruise

It's a world first, and it's coming this November.

Have you had a lifelong dream of living at sea? Well now you can, with the first three-year cruise, the MV Gemini by Life at Sea Cruises, setting sail and visiting 135 countries across the globe.

Passengers will be able to board from just £70 ($125.21) per night.

Starting off in Istanbul on November 1, the three-year journey across 209,214 kilometres will visit 375 ports around the world.

Fear not if you're not in Istanbul – the vessel will also be picking up passengers from Barcelona, Spain and Florida in Miami.

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will allow visitors to see 13 World Wonders, including Rome's famous Colosseum, India's Taj Mahal and Brazil's Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro.

While most around-the-world cruises spend a couple hours or maybe even a few nights per port, the MV Gemini will dock for up to seven nights at a single destination.

On board, there are a variety of cabins to chose from.

Prices for the entry-level cabins, the 'Inside/Outside Staterooms,' start at $3,726 per month for cabins ranging from 130 to 142 square feet.

Moving up a level, you've got the 'Premium Inside/Outside Staterooms' ranging from 142 to 160 square feet. Prices for this room start at $4,323 per month, working out to be $141 per day.

Lastly there are the 'Junior Suites/Balcony Suites', the most luxurious on the ship.

These cabins, ranging from 210 to 260 square feet, start at $9,989 per month, which works out at $119,294 per year per person.

Travellers can either pay monthly or pay the entire three years upfront, with the option to finance the payment.

However, passengers won't able to book shorter stays aboard the ship – it's three years or nothing.

Being away from your family and friends for that amount of time is significant and while the reselling of staterooms isn't allowed, guests (including children) can visit any time.

If you've got children under the age of 16, sadly they won't be joining you on the trip as there is no school on board.

If a week or two isn't enough time on a cruise, Life at Sea has an alternative for you. The brand from Miray Cruises will offer a three-year cruise around the world visiting nearly 400 ports, the brand announced Wednesday.

The cruise will take place on the MV Gemini ship, which was originally built in 1992 and underwent renovations in October, Mikael Petterson, managing director of Life at Sea Cruises, said in an email. The vessel, which can accommodate nearly 1,100 passengers, will spend multiple days in each port during the voyage.

When is Life at Sea's three-year cruise?

The cruise will depart from Istanbul, Turkey on Nov. 1. In addition to the previous renovations, the ship will be "completely revitalized" this fall prior to setting sail on the three-year trip, Petterson said.

Cabins range from 130 square feet for Virtual Inside and Oceanview rooms, to 260-square-foot Balcony Suites, according to the release.

The ship provides everything one would need to live at sea for several years, including spacious cabins, dining and entertainment options, recreational areas like a wellness center, sun deck, and pool, and plentiful work spaces for those who want to live the digital nomad life at sea. That includes a business center with meeting rooms, 14 offices, and a business library for all Zoom call needs. 

“Professionals need connectivity, the right amenities, and the functionality to perform their jobs. Travelers who have dreamt of living at sea can finally do so this November.

Life at Sea Cruises will give travelers the opportunity to spend three years on a cruise ship while sailing around the world. Pricing starts at a little over $231,000 per person for the full three-year itinerary.

The vessel will begin its globetrotting affair in Istanbul on November 1, but will also pick up guests in Barcelona and Miami.

The ship has 627 cabins to accommodate up to 1,074 travelers. Throughout the three years, these seafarers will travel over 130,000 miles to 375 ports in 135 countries.

Along the way, they'll see all seven continents while visiting destinations like several of the Wonders of the World; Half Moon Island, Antarctica; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Seoul, South Korea.

Most around-the-world cruises spend several hours or up to two nights at ports of call.

But industry veteran Mike Petterson, the managing director of Life at Sea Cruises and the brainpower behind the new brand, said this isn't enough time to explore larger destinations like Beijing, China.

So instead, the Gemini will dock for up to seven nights in one destination.

This includes one week each in Shanghai and Singapore, which will also double as wet docks. If the ship has to head into a dry dock for repairs, Life at Sea passengers will be put up in a hotel.

Petterson conceived of Life at Sea before the COVID-19 pandemic and partnered with Miray International's Miray Cruises in late 2022 to turn this concept into a reality.

The new company will use Miray's cruise ship workers and the Gemini, one of its three ships.

Throughout the three years at sea, the Gemini will spend 288 overnights at different ports, averaging about two nights per destination.

A trip to any of these locations could cost the typical globetrotter hundreds or thousands of dollars in travel and accommodation fees.

However, passage on Life at Sea's Gemini will alleviate upfront costs for travelers by giving them the option to spread payments out over the course of three years.

But don't expect a glittering new hotel at sea with all the bells and whistles of a novel mega ship.

The upper-premium, 30-year-old vessel was refurbished last year. And the team is now spending an additional $10 million renovating the interior.

Think of the Gemini as a floating city with its own security, medical center, and offices with Starlink WiFi.

No city would be complete without a jail and a morgue. Luckily (or unluckily) the Gemini has both.

Cruise lines like Royal Caribbean have seen record-breaking demand for giant cruise ships that can accommodate thousands of travelers.

But Life at Sea is taking a more scaled-down approach to the floating hotel.

Seafarers will have access to typical cruise ship amenities, which include four lounges, a golf simulator, and a sundeck with a pool.

For meals at sea, passengers can dine at one of the two primary dining rooms, the restaurant on the pool deck, or order food anywhere on the ship using its app.

But unlike the average cruise vessel, the Gemini will also have amenities like a robust business center and a hospital with a pharmacy and dentist.

Like any all-inclusive cruise, these extras — including hospital visits — won't come at an additional cost.

These around-the-world cruises are often booked by retirees.

But Petterson says Life at Sea is targeting an incrementally younger demographic: pre-retirees, generally people between 55 to 65 years of age.

To accommodate the remote workers, the business center — which will replace the ship's casino — will have meeting rooms, offices, and a library.

Days at sea with no land in sight is inevitable for transoceanic itineraries: Travelers on the Gemini will have at least 300 of these sailing days.

To stave off boredom, travelers can spend their days around the ship's lounges, attending seminars and shows, or resting in their cabins.

The cheapest and smallest stateroom measures 130 square feet and starts at $90,000 per person for the three-year trip.

Like any cruise ship, interior staterooms can feel dingy.

To prevent this, these cabins will come with screens that will display a live view of the ocean, creating a virtual "window."

For those looking to spend more cash, the most expensive cabin — a suite with a balcony — will run travelers nearly $330,000 in total.

These staterooms pale in comparison to the over 1,000-square-foot suites on several modern cruise ships.

But according to Petterson, at least they're more affordable: "It's meant more for the mass market and retirees as opposed to doctors with trophy wives."

Travelers can either pay monthly or pay the entire three years upfront with the option to finance the payment.

However, they can't book shorter legs of the trip. It's all three years or nothing.

For those with commitment issues, there's also the option to divide travel with another passenger, taking turns spending time on the ship.

Three years without seeing friends and family can be a long time. Luckily, they're welcome as well.

They can either crash on a roll-in bed in a resident's stateroom, stay in a guest cabin, or stay in a passenger's stateroom while they are off the ship.

Reservations for Life at Sea's Gemini open on March 1.

Petterson says the company already has about 20 people who are ready to book.

Launching sales seven months ahead of the journey may seem risky for an industry that often relies on bookings a year in advance.

However, Petterson, a self-described "optimist," expects the ship will sail at an over 55% occupancy rate at any given time as world cruises have skyrocketed in popularity over the last two years.

Over the last few years, around-the-world sailings have been booking well despite the long-term commitment.

For travelers like retirees and remote workers, this extended life at sea promises peaceful afternoons and the opportunity to slowly travel the world with minimal planning.

The 1992-built/2022- scrapped SuperStar Gemini cruise ship is owned by GHK (Genting Hong Kong, part of Genting Group Malaysia) and managed by GHK's subsidiary Genting Cruise Lines via the Star Cruises brand. Fleetmates were Star Pisces , SuperStar Aquarius (sistership), SuperStar Libra . The liner's building cost was USD 240 million. The drydock refurbishment in 2013 cost USD 50 million.

The vessel (IMO number 9008419) was last Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 308272000) and registered in Nassau .

In late-April 2022, was announced that the docked in Malaysia ships Star Pisces and SuperStar Gemini (both in George Town Penang ) and SuperStar Aquarius (in Port Klang ) are listed for scrapping and soon to be beached at Alang India . According to online media sources, the liners' last crew signed off on May 17th, as new/skeleton crew were hired to take them to the scrapyard for dismantling and recycling.

In June, the vessel was renamed GEM and reflagged to St Kitts & Nevis (MMSI 341492000/registered in Basseterre ). On June 5th, the ship left Penang en route to Colombo Sri Lanka , arriving and anchoring off the coast on June 17th. On July 14th, MV GEM arrived and docked at HIP-Hambantota International Port (Sri Lanka) for a month-long layup. The sistership MV ARIUS (SuperStar Aquarius) arrived there on July 11th.

SuperStar Gemini's AIS transmitted for the last time on November 22, 2022 (at 20:34 UTC) showing the vessel en route to Alang.

History - construction and ownership

Star Cruises is part of Genting Cruise Lines (subsidiary of GHK-Genting Hong Kong Corporation) - the world's 5th-largest cruise shipowner, after Carnival Corporation , RCG-Royal Caribbean Group , MSC and NCLH-Norwegian . The company (listed on Singapore Exchange and Hong Kong Stock Exchange) dominates the Asia-Pacific cruising market. Star Cruises was established as a subsidiary and travel brand of Genting Group of Malaysia (incorporated in Bermuda in 1993), with corporate headquarters in Hong Kong China .

The fleet's first ships were two cruiseferries bought from Rederi AB Slite (1947-founded/1993-bankrupt, see VIKING LINE ). In the following years, Star Cruises purchased several other second-hand ships, then followed two newbuilds - SuperStar Leo/Norwegian Spirit (1998) and the sistership SuperStar Virgo (1999).

The 1750-passenger ship SuperStar Gemini was built in 1992 by the Chantiers de l'Atlantique (shipyard in Saint-Nazaire France ). The first name of the vessel was ms Dreamwar and it was constructed with the idea to sail for Norwegian Cruise Line . In 1998 the cruise ship was upgraded (lengthened), at Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven, Germany and her name was changed to Norwegian Dream. The ship was added to the fleet of Star Cruises at the end of 2012 as SuperStar Gemini. In the period between 1995 and 2008 SuperStar Gemini was sailing under the name "MS Gemini".

During the lengthening process in March-May 1998, the vessel was cut in half and a new 40-m / 130-ft long midsection was added. The maximum passenger capacity was increased significantly. SuperStar Gemini naming ceremony was held on 5 December 1992 at Port Everglades , the place where the vessel started her first cruise to Bermuda the next day.

Star Cruises ships are recognized by their funnel design. Star Pisces was the first with such design. Later the company based all of its ships on the Star Pisces' funnel design.

SuperStar Gemini provides a total of 765 staterooms in 14 categories. The largest accommodations are the Junior Suites (370 ft2 / 34 m2). All suites are equipped with HDTV, DVD player, mini-fridge, separate lounge area.

The boat has 13 decks , of which 9 are passenger-accessible and 7 with cabins.

SuperStar Gemini itinerary program was based on Asian voyages.

In 2017-2018, the ship was home-ported in Laem Chabang-Bangkok (Thailand) . The ship's new deployment was for the period December 17, 2017, through April 27, 2018. From Thailand, SuperStar Gemini operated 3-night roundtrips to Sihanoukville Cambodia and Koh Samui Island (departures every Sunday), 2-night roundtrips to Sihanoukville (departures every Wednesday) and 2-night roundtrips to Koh Kong Island (departures every Friday).

For 2018-2019 winter season (November 5, 2018, through April 28, 2019), the liner was homeported in Malaysia (ports Langkawi , Port Klang , Penang ) and Thailand ( Phuket ). The 3-night itineraries were mixed with 4-night (departing February 6) and 2-night (departing February 10) special voyages visiting Langkawi, Port Klang, Penang, Phuket, Krabi , Singapore .

The vessel (Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard/hull number 103348) was launched in 1992 as "MS Dreamward" for Kloster Cruises (now NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line ). The first drydock was for lengthening (March thru May 1998) conducted in Bremerhaven Germany (at Lloyd Werft's yard). The stretched by 40 m/130 ft ship was then renamed "Norwegian Dream". As SuperStar Gemini, the ship was transferred to Star Cruises in 2012. The only sistership is SuperStar Aquarius/Norwegian Wind/MS Windward (1993-built/2022-scrapped).

The ship is powered by MAN marine diesel engines (model 8L4054) with total power output 18,64 MW.

Being part of the Asia-Pacific leading cruise line, Star Cruises Gemini ship offers amazing journeys across the high seas. In 2013, the vessel underwent a major USD 50-million refurbishment. Drydock 2013 was the time when SuperStar Gemini was upgraded with a new navigational system, lots of new onboard features, new hull design.

In the period February 7-16 (Chinese New Year), Star Cruises designated SuperStar Gemini as "hotel ship". During this time, the vessel was permanently docked in homeport Sanya China (at Phoenix Island International Port). This way, Star Cruises introduced (for the first-ever) in Asia the "Floating Hotel" cruise vacation concept, providing a unique holiday vacation experience. The "cruise deals" were inclusive of stateroom, onboard dining and entertainment, as well as all onboard holiday-themed events (Valentine's Day dinner, Lunar New Year family dinner, live magic show performances, kids programs). All main onboard venues (including the 11 restaurants and the Theater Lounge) remained open during the nights. There was also an extensive night-life program. "Hotel ship" tickets prices per night / per person started from USD 78 (Inside Cabin fare based on double occupancy).
