Trek has a wide range of electric hybrids with Bosch electronics and quality components. These include the Dual Sport+, FX+, Allant+, and Verve+.

The Verve+ is the comfort-focused model family in the lineup.

These lightweight city bikes have upright geometry, shock-absorbing seatpost suspension, smooth Bosch mid-drive motors, and a set of commuter components. Each of the three Verve+ models is available as a step-over or step-through.

There’s no getting around it, Trek electric bicycles cost more than average. A reputation for quality, a lifetime warranty on each bike frame, and convenient support from local dealers help explain the inflated prices.

At slightly less than $3,000, the Trek Verve+ 2 is expensive for an electric hybrid bike , but it offers plenty for riders who value comfort, smooth performance, and reliability. It has Bontrager, Bosch, and Shimano components throughout, all of which work smoothly. This bike is ready for commuting as it’s sold, but the mid-drive design and modest motor power mean that it’s best suited to riders who want a boost, not a free ride.

The Verve+ 2 competes with other brand-name models like Cannondale’s Adventure Neo 3 EQ and Specialized’s Turbo Vado 3.0, which have very similar build kits and are slightly more expensive but more refined.

You can easily find an urban e-bike for one-half or one-third of the price that the Verve+ 2 goes for, but you’re much more likely to run into issues and be left high and dry when they arise.

Alternatively, you have dozens of similar options in the entry-level market, such as the Ride1UP 700 Series , Aventon Level.2 , and Rad Power Bikes RadCity 5 Plus . Likewise, they’re direct-to-consumer, so you don’t have the same support if something goes wrong.

The Trek Verve+ 2 Lowstep is more accessible with its easy-to-mount frame. However, neither is quite as comfortable as the Cannondale Adventure Neo or Rad Power Bikes RadCity with their swept-back handlebars, fork suspension, and wider tires.

An advantage of buying a Trek bike is the ample sizing options. Between the two frame designs, there is an option for riders 4’10” to 6’6″ (the Lowstep fits shorter riders), so pretty much everyone can find the right fit.

The Trek Verve+ 2 is an ebike with a Bosch motor , boasting a Bosch Active Line motor and a 400 Wh PowerPack, the same system used on the Cannondale Adventure Neo 3 EQ. Bosch mid-drive motors are among the best in the industry, providing smooth and reliable performance.

However, a mid-drive unit like the Active Line is only suitable for riders who expect to contribute some of their power to get where they need to go. This type of system doesn’t give you an effortless ride like the 750W throttle-powered systems found on the RadCity 5 Plus or 700 Series.

The Trek Verve+ 2, powered by a Bosch Active Line motor, offers a reliable performance for riders seeking a traditional bike feel with a boost, covering up to 60 miles on a single charge.

Additionally, with just 40 Nm of torque, you must make a significant effort when riding up steep gradients or carrying cargo. However, if you like the natural feel of a traditional bike and want an extra boost instead of a scooter-like ride, then the Verve+ 2 is a great option.

The 400 Wh battery will return a max range of roughly 60 miles, similar to the Adventure Neo 3 EQ and slightly less than the Turbo Vado 3.0 with its 530 Wh battery.

Finally, Trek chose Bosch’s minimalist Purion display for the Verve+ 2. This suits the bike well and provides enough information for most riders.

Comprehensive Urban Design with Quality Brand-Name Components

The Trek Verve+ 2 is a commuter-style hybrid with everything you need for urban riding. This includes front and rear lights (120-lumen headlight), an MIK-compatible rear rack with a 55 lb capacity, and plastic fenders.

Its Shimano groupset is typical for this price point and provides solid, reliable performance for urban riding. The Verve+ 2 gets the same Shimano Alivio 9-speed drivetrain and MT200 hydraulic discs as the Specialized Turbo Vado 3.0, just with a lower-quality 38t chainring. The Cannondale Adventure Neo 3 has a slightly cheaper microSHIFT Marvo 9-speed drivetrain and Tektro hydraulic discs.

One major difference between Verve+ 2 and the bikes we’ve been comparing is the wheels and tires. The comparison bikes have 27.5″ wheels with tires between 2″ and 2.4″. The Verve+ 2 has large 700c wheels wrapped in 45 mm tires.

This combination allows this bike to roll much more efficiently on pavement, making this e-bike suitable for riding without assistance, if necessary. The Bontrager H5 Hard-Case Ultimate tires are also some of the most durable on the market.

What is the range of the Trek Verve+ 2?

The range of the Trek Verve+ 2 is around 30 miles on average. However, in ideal conditions on ‘Eco’ mode, you can achieve up to 60 miles. In very tough conditions on max power, the total range may be as low as 10 miles.

According to me, the frame accounts for roughly 70% of the bike’s appearance and feel, so it should be taken into account when making a purchase decision. The Alpha Gold Aluminum frame on the Trek Verve 2 represents the pinnacle of aluminum engineering for Trek bicycles.

The frame guarantees a solid ride while still feeling very light and forgiving while riding. The first time you test-ride this bike, you’ll quickly realize how important this is.

The bike has a shorter reach than other traditional fitness bikes because the comfort of the rider is given top priority when designing the frame. This also makes sure that you are riding this thing in a more upright position, which is suitable if you have ever experienced back, neck, or shoulder problems.

You can also easily look around while changing lanes or crossing streets when you’re standing up straight.

Fork Review

This bike has a steel threaded steerer tube and a Verve alloy fork for excellent handling. The frame’s inclusion of a ThruSkew axle is yet another surprise to me. This guarantees that your front wheel won’t come off while you’re riding and makes it simple and quick to access your front wheel.

The absence of a suspension is one of the choices in this new model with which I disagree. As a front suspension is something you would anticipate on a comfort hybrid bike like this one. But as it turns out, the suspension on a bike like this doesn’t really increase comfort as much as you might think.

Since this is a hybrid, you won’t be required to perform jumps or ride on trails as frequently, and riding upright means your weight is distributed more toward the back of the bike. Additionally, in order to significantly benefit from a front suspension, you would need to ride more aggressively and shift your weight forward, which is not in the best interest of a comfort bike.

But at this price, the Trek Marlin 5 will be a great option if you’re looking for something that can be used for both regular commutes and trail runs.

Additionally, you can lighten the bike up and make it more comfortable by removing the front suspension. You won’t experience any significant shocks with this fork as long as you stay on well-paved roads and ground limestone, and it has an adjustable suspension seat post and a taller stack.

Drivetrain Review

The drivetrain of Trek Verve 2 consists of

  • Shimano Altus M315 8×3 shifters
  • Forged alloy 3 speed 48/38/28 crank with a Shimano Tourney TY710 front derailleur
  • 8 speed 11-32 Shimano HG31 cassette with a Shimano Altus M310 read derailleur

You can see that the drivetrain on this bike is made entirely of Shimano parts. It’s advantageous because it avoids the need for additional tuning and other brand-specific compatibility problems. Shimano is regarded as the best for drivetrain components and is used and adored by the top athletes worldwide, which should give you peace of mind if you are new to cycling.

You will have a wide range of speeds to choose from for any gradient thanks to the 8×3 setup. As they allow a full stroke, easier gears are ideal for riders who have been away from bikes for a long time or for those who are attempting to recover from leg injuries.

Handlebar And Stem Review

This hybrid bike has a 620mm/660mm wide alloy handlebar from Trek’s own brand Bontrager, whose products are well-known. You’ll see a lot of Bontrager components in the following. This particular handlebar has a comfort sweep, giving it a subtle “M” shape similar to what you typically see on a comfort cruiser.

Because the stem part includes a Bontrager alloy quill, you can effectively adjust the handlebar rise into any of the 64 degrees it allows. This makes the stem part a little unique. The stem is also longer—85mm or 105mm, depending on the size you choose—which is typical for road and commuter bikes because it gives you more room to turn.

Seatpost And Saddle Review

The adjustable suspension seatpost that is included with the Trek Verve 2 is made of alloy, and it is a key component of the extra comfort that it provides when riding upright. For those road bumps and shocks, this has an adjustable range of up to 27mm.

The ride quality is flawless and is undoubtedly one of the most praised aspects of the bike, along with the Bontrager Boulevard comfort saddle. Longer rides are very comfortable because of the extensive cushioning.

Brakes Review

You are fortunate in this regard because, up until a few years ago, the Trek Verve 2 only had rim brakes. Trek made a wise decision to upgrade to hydraulic disc brakes from Tektro HD-M275, giving rise to the name Trek Verve 2 Disc. which are much better in every way and more trustworthy. Even in wet conditions, where rim brakes are dangerous to operate, they function flawlessly.

Additionally, they have the highest stopping power, which is extremely helpful when you are carrying more weight. Hydraulic disc brakes have the added benefit of being very simple to use and maintain over time, which is another advantage over mechanical ones.

Wheels Review

The front and rear hubs are both made of Formula DC 6-bolt alloy (DC-20 in the front and DC-22 in the back). For a stiffer ride and greater overall strength of the wheels, Bontrager Connection rims are double-walled and made of aluminum alloy.

The Bontrager H5 Comps, 700x45c stock tires that come with this bike are wider than those you’d find on a road bike but not as much as those on a mountain bike. On well-paved roads and gravel, which is typically the case for commuting and recreational riding, they roll fairly well.

Because of these wider tires, the lack of front suspension is concealed. Since there are no power losses when pedaling, getting rid of the suspension allows for better energy transmission on the road.

A size medium Trek Verve 2 weighs 30.26 lbs, or 13.73 kg, and can support a rider weight of 300 lbs, or roughly 136 kg, plus any cargo.

In my early 20s and throughout graduate school, I was an avid rider. After that, I became preoccupied with other tasks, and my bike washed up on the side. I was anxious to start riding again because I wasn’t certain that it would be comfortable or that I would still enjoy it as much as I did in the past. I chose the Verve 2 bike after doing some research and don’t regret it. The bike is enjoyable and comfortable to ride. I wish I hadn’t waited so long and am looking forward to my time spent hiking. But the real test is: Would I buy another bike if this one broke tomorrow? Yes, right away. The Best Bike I Have Ever Owned Is This One.

I’ve switched between a road bike, mountain bike, hybrid bike, and now the Verve 2 Disk. I have discovered the ideal fusion of comfort and speed at the age of 66. At the end of a 26-mile ride, I can get off the bike pain-free thanks to the upright position and simple gear transition. I now want to ride again because that truly makes a difference. This bike will accompany me until dusk. PS: I got lucky that Gateway Cycle in North Saint Paul had this Verve 2 Disc in Gray in stock. I rode it for a short distance as a test drive before bringing it home.

I Adore This Bike Utterly…

I just picked up my new Verve 2 Disc this morning and went for a 6 mile ride. I love it so much! I have been riding a recumbent exercise bike ever since this whole Covid thing started, so I made the decision to get another bike and enjoy the summer. I’m a 58-year-old man who is currently trying to get back in shape. I’ve had issues with various other styles of bikes in the past, but this bike is comfortable on my knees and shoulders. Despite having a factory saddle, the bike is surprisingly comfortable, light, and agile. If you’re looking for a comfortable and casual form of exercise, stop right here! I’m hoping you’ll adore yours too!

Does Not Age Well

To go along with a Specualized Sirrus that I had bought in 2013, I bought this bike in early 2021. I rode both of them over the past year (roughly the same distances and terrain). The Verve is beginning to tremble, and the frame feels less sturdy than the Sirrus, who is nine years old. The Verve appears to have deteriorated more in a year than the Sirrus did in nine years, given the same circumstances and care. I want to trade my Verve in for a new Sirrus. Who knows though; perhaps the design of simple bikes was more advanced ten years ago….we shall see…

Is The Trek Verve 2 An Excellent Bicycle?

If you’re after a hybrid bike with fantastic braking power thanks to the hydraulic disc brakes, great reviews, and lots of features – the Verve 2 is a fantastic option!

If you’re looking for a drawback, I’d say the pedals need to be upgraded. It’s not a big deal to me, though, because I can’t recall ever using the pedals that came with a new bike instead of my own.

It also boasts an alpha gold aluminum frame that keeps the kgs down to a very respectable and desirable 13kg!

How Do Trek Verve 1 And 2 Differ From One Another?

The disc brakes make a significant distinction. The disc brakes on the Verve 2 Disc bicycles are hydraulic. The Trek Verve 1 has mechanical disc brakes.

This is significant because, when it comes to cycling, hydraulic disc brakes are more dependable and easier to maintain.

The brakes and gearing will both matter if you like to travel at high speeds…

The Verve 2 disc also benefits from a Shimano drivetrain . SunRace cassette is available for the Trek Verve 1.

Does it really matter?

Your shifters’ responsiveness may be impacted by the various materials these derailleurs are made of.

Ideally, the derailleurs will react immediately when you shift gears on your shifters.

Each Verve comes with an aluminum alloy frame, which is impressive considering some of the price points!

The Verve 2 Disc scores higher in terms of versatility because it offers a wider variety of gears!

The Trek Verve 2’s Weight Is How Much?

One of the features I love about the Trek Verve 2 disc is how lightweight it is as a bike. It weighs 13.2kg.

That is impressive for a hybrid bike with hydraulic disc brakes.

Then when you factor in that you get a load of extras such as the puncture protection tires , which yes, do weigh more but we’re talking grams and These tires, in my opinion, are worth the added weight.

Let’s not forget the rack, fender, and lights that are all included!

It is a lightweight bicycle overall.

Is A Trek Bike Value For The Money?

Despite the fact that every Trek bike is unique, the company still makes some good bikes. A high-quality, reasonably priced hybrid bike is the Trek Verve.

7 reasons why I’m finally an electric bike believer

I t’s easy to dislike new things, especially when that new thing tends to be pricier, heavier and dorkier looking than a cherished old thing. I’m speaking about electric bikes, of course. As an avid cyclist since my diaper days, I’ve been hooked on the feeling of cruising around on a bicycle for as far back as my memory goes.

When ebikes started popping up in my purview ten years ago, or so, I initially paid them little mind. After all, ebikes are an incredibly eco-friendly alternative to motor vehicles, and living in a congested city like Seattle, I’m down for anything that reduces urban car culture. 

But then ebike numbers started to grow and soon, everyone from floppy-haired preteens to salt-and-pepper retirees began blasting by me at mock speeds — bike racks became jam-packed with bulky, unsightly ebikes, as did popular biking trails. And, so, my attitude shifted from that of an open-minded, fresh-faced college boy to one of a crotchety recluse, ready to shake my proverbial cane at all ebikers in passing. 

That was the old me, though. People can change. These days, I’ve come around to the motor-assisted lifestyle. In fact, I’m considering upgrading to one of the best electric bikes soon. Here are seven reasons why I’m finally an electric bike believer.

1. You can still get a workout…if you want to

The old me would scoff at ebike riders zipping by as I huffed and puffed up steep inclines. "Get a real bike!" I'd shout in my head. But now I know better than to judge. Sure, you can cruise around on an ebike with minimal physical excursion. That doesn't mean you have to.

I find that for longer rides, in particular, it's often necessary to conserve battery power for the tail end when I'm really tired. When riding the entry-level Trek Verve 2 Disc, for instance, I like to keep the e-assist on at its lowest setting for all but the steepest hills, which coincidentally is how I end most rides (I live on a hill). This means I'm still doing plenty of peddling and getting my heart rate decently elevated. 

So, yes, you can definitely still get a solid workout on an ebike. On a recent 15.6-mile ride, for example, I burned 878 calories, according to the Garmin Forerunner 165 . My average heart rate for that ride, 146 bpm, was also not too dissimilar to my average for similar rides on a standard bike.

Maxing out at 20 MPH using maximum motor power, it has plenty of pep in its step for joy rides or booking it up hills. 2. Prices are coming down

It's easy to assume that electric-assisted bikes cost a pretty penny. But the entry-level market, which I'm classifying as any bike under $1000, has really started to blossom. The previously mentioned Trek Verve 2 Disc, for example, is surprisingly solid-built and with a decent range for only $700. 

A quick trip to our best electric bikes buying guide reveals several other excellent sub-$1k options, including the Ride1Up Roadster V2 and the Ride1Up Turris. The Juiced Ripracer , which I'd love to try out, costs just a bit more at $1200 and looks seriously fun to ride. 

3. Range is adequate, even on the entry-level

Speaking of entry-level, battery life on bikes like the Roadster V2 and Verve 2 is respectable. Both get between 20 and 30 miles per charge, depending on how much e-assist you use. Higher-end options, like the $1700 Rad Power RadCity 5 Plus sport batteries with ranges up to 55 miles and above. 

Most entry-level ebikes don't offer swappable batteries; you'll likely need to shell out extra dough for that feature. Fortunately... 

4. Batteries recharge quickly

I was impressed to discover that I can fully charge up the Trek Verve Disc's internal battery to 100% in roughly two hours. The Roadster V2 takes a little longer, between two and four hours. 

Still, this means that if I run out of juice while on a cycling adventure, I can pop into the nearest coffee shop or pub, down a beverage or two while my bike charges up, and be on my merry way.

5. They're heavy but not too heavy

Weight and bulk are both major reasons why I've been hesitant to own an ebike. Living in an apartment with several sets of stairs to navigate doesn't exactly vibe with owning a 77-pound bike. 

However, there are a surprising number of light-ish ebikes, especially toward the entry-level end. You'll find lighter options in carbon fiber, of course, but those models start at several grand. Not to worry, the Roadster V2 is just 33 pounds, and the Verve 2 Disc is only 30 pounds. While both vastly outweigh my standard commuter bike, the heft is manageable. 

6. Faster than a car in congested cities 

In congested urban environments, ebikes offer an entertaining and environmentally friendly alternative to commuting by car. They can also get you from point A to point B — assuming your city has adequate bike infrastructure — often faster than motor vehicles. 

In Seattle, I'm easily able to avoid the crushing agony of rush hour traffic thanks to well-placed bike lanes and trails. Destinations that might otherwise take me 45 minutes to get to via car instead take me 15 or 20 minutes.

7. They're pure fun 

Ultimately, the reason I got into biking in the first place is because it's fun. Who would've guessed that adding a small motor to a bike could make it even more enjoyable? But it surely does. 

Beyond the thrill of cruising around town like a bat out of hell, electric bikes also have the benefit of unlocking new adventures. Destinations I may have previously avoided biking to due to distance or incline are now suddenly within reach. 

Bottom line: I'm an ebike believer

This marks just the start of my electric bike journey. And I can't wait to see where it takes me: I mentioned shopping for an ebike in the intro, and I'm eager to explore all of the options out there.

For the vast majority of riders, the Rad Power RadCity 5 Plus will be the best electric bike. It has a comfortable design, plenty of power, and a multitude of mounting points for things such as baskets and child seats. Plus, it comes with a rear rack and mudguards. Its 7-speed shifter, combined with three levels of pedal assistance and a twist throttle is more than enough to get you up even the steepest of hills.

Rad Power says that the RadCity5 should get upwards of 50+ miles on a charge; in our testing, it came fairly close — about 40 miles. 

We really enjoyed pedaling around on this bike, which is offered in both step-through and step-over models. The one caveat is that this bike weighs a hefty 64 pounds, so you're not going to want to lug it up stairs.

2. Ride1Up Turris

While there are plenty of great electric bikes that cost more than $2,000, the Ride1Up Turris shows that you can get a lot of value from an ebike that costs much less. During our testing, we found the Turris' 750W motor to be more than powerful enough for most situations. We were equally impressed with how quickly it responded when we started pedaling, as many budget ebikes exhibit a slight delay in these situations. (There was a slight lag when using just the throttle, though).

Other standout features include its mechanical disc brakes, easy-to-read digital display, and bright 60 Lux headlight. Included front and rear fenders helped keep our clothes clean on wet days, and its wide, 27.5 x 2.4-inch tires made for a comfortable ride — so much so that we thought that the front suspension felt a bit extraneous. 

There's no taillight, so you'll want to check out our picks for the best bike lights , and unlike some pricier ebikes, you'll have to assemble a few pieces of the bike yourself, including the handlebars, front wheel, and pedals. We also had to make a few adjustments to the fenders, which might mean a trip to your local bike shop. 

But for those who want an affordable electric bike to get around town, the Turris should be at the top of your list.

3. Aventon Aventure.2

If you're looking for a fat-tire electric bike that's less than $2,000, the Aventon Aventure.2 is hard to beat. It's as good off-road as it is on pavement, has a beefy battery and a clear color display, as well as fenders that'll save your clothes from getting too muddy. Other niceties include a brake-activated rear light and turn signals.

The Aventure.2 has both pedal-assist and throttle modes, and the battery and wires are neatly integrated into the frame. What's more, the battery can be removed for charging. The battery lasted nearly the advertised 60 miles on a charge, but, as with other ebikes, we drained it much faster when we relied on the throttle.

While not as capable as a dedicated mountain bike, the Aventure.2 was able to get us up and over hilly terrain, and its torque sensor was quick to translate our pedaling into power. 

Our only real critiques were the bike's 77-pound weight and its front suspension fork, which felt unnecessary. Otherwise, it's an excellent bike for the price.

Charge Bikes City review

4. Charge Bikes City

If you plan on commuting to work, Charge Bikes City may well be the best ebike for you. Not only does it come with features like full-fenders to keep the mud off and a rear rack for a pack or bag, but it does everything well for a very reasonable price. The Charge City has a five level power assist, as well as a full-power throttle button, should the need or hill arise. 

The biggest reason why we think this bike is best for commuters is that its handle bars fold flat, so you can more easily store it in an apartment or a cubicle at work. It comes with all the necessary bells and whistles a commuter is going to want, including the bell (actually a superior and very loud electronic horn). The bike is available in both step-over and step through, and in a few color options, too.

The City's electric assist is so smooth you'll think you're doing all the work yourself. At night, the bike's lights sufficiently lit up the road and the throttle helped us zip around potential trouble when we felt out of gas. Its advertised range of 50 miles held up, too; we found we only had to recharge the bike every three days using it on our regular commute.

Founded by folks from biking icon Cannondale, Charge's sui generis feature is that even newbies can assemble the bike right out of the box in 10 minutes or less. All you basically have to do is put the front wheel on.

5. Juiced Ripracer

The Juiced Ripracer is a lot of fun, and costs a lot less than you might think. It's one of the more affordable offroad ebikes we've tested, and it can go just about anywhere. This fat-tire bike has 20-inch wheels and a 40.3-inch wheelbase that's meant for trails and other unpaved surfaces. However, its lack of shock absorbers, like most e-mountain bikes, means you're in for a rougher ride. 

Its 750W motor delivered some real get-up-and-go, and, thanks to its low-end torque, was great for charging up hills. In one concession to its price, the Ripracer has a cadence, rather than a torque sensor, so you have to rotate the pedals a couple of time before the assist kicks in. As it's a BMX-style bike, the Ripracer is a lot smaller than other mountain e-bikes, which also makes it easier to maneuver around tight spaces.

6. Ride1Up Roadster V2

At first glance, the Ride1Up Roadster V2 It looks like a regular, non-motorized commuter bike — the better to blend in with traditional rides — but concealed inside is a battery capable of up to 30 miles of range. 

The Roadster V2 is also one of the lightest ebikes we tested — it weighs just 33 pounds, so carrying it around shouldn't be a problem — and although there's no step-through model, Ride1Up offers it in two sizes to accommodate riders of nearly all heights. 

The Roadster V2 was fast and fun on flat and rolling terrain, and its belt drive made for a very quiet ride. However, this is a single-speed model, so it's a bit hard to get moving on hills. 

There are a few concessions to get to this price: The Roadster V2 doesn't have lights of any kind, nor does it have fenders, and it uses rim, rather than disc brakes. We also found its display to be on the small side. Still, if you can live with those compromises, you'll enjoy the Roadster V2.

7. RadPower RadRunner 3 Plus

How's this for an endorsement? Our reviewer loved this bike so much that he decided to buy one for himself. 

While it can't haul as heavy loads as some other larger (and much more expensive) cargo bikes, the RadPower RadRunner 3 Plus is more than capable of carrying you, your kids, and plenty of groceries wherever you need to go. We loved its responsive 750W motor, its comfortable ride, and its low center of gravity, thanks to its 3.3-inch thick, 20-inch tires.

However, we found it to be fairly heavy, tipping the scales at 75 pounds, so you're not going to want to try pedal it without any power assist. But we found its advertised 45-mile range to be pretty accurate, so long as we didn't go too heavy on the throttle.

Aside from its performance, what made the RadRunner 3 Plus stand out so much to us was its versatility: You can outfit the bike with any number of combinations of racks, seats, bags, and other accessories to truly customize it for your needs. And, its relatively low price for a cargo bike makes it a real bargain for those looking to replace their car with an electric bike.

8. Gocycle G4i+

The Gocycle G4i+ looks like something a supercar designer would build, which isn't surprising given that it was conceived by former McLaren sports car engineer Richard Thorpe. Not only is this bike's unique wheels-on-one-side and tapered body eye-catching, but we were able to fold it up in less than a minute into a size small enough to get us on and off a train, and past our security and into our office elevator. At 36 pounds, it's one of the lightest folding electric bikes out there, too. 

Despite that, this bike was a real pleasure to ride. Its electric shifter responded near instantly, as did the pedal assist and throttle. However, while the G4i+ has daytime running lights, you'll have to pay extra for a legit headlight, as well as mudguards. Also, the G4i+ has a great smartphone app, but one of the flimsiest methods of holding your phone on the bike itself — a cheap solution for a bike that costs $7,000. 

If you're looking for something slightly more affordable, GoCycle also sells the G4i ($5,999) and the G4 ($4,799). A 2022 version of the G4 has an injection molded composite mid-frame. Still too much for your wallet? Then you should check out the Brompton Electric C-Line Explore , which starts around $3,000.

Yuba Supercargo CL at park

9. Yuba Supercargo CL

The Yuba Supercargo CL can haul an astounding 500 pounds, making it one of the heftiest electric cargo bikes in its class. Yet, it offers a surprisingly stable ride, thanks to its low center of gravity. Its cargo area is very customizable, letting you convert it from a place to carry groceries to a space to tote your tots to soccer practice.  

Magna hydraulic brakes and a Bosch mid-drive motor were very responsive, though the relatively small 20-inch tires and lack of suspension did make bumps feel a bit jarring. The Supercargo CL starts at around $6,000, but is incredibly customizable; you can select from a range of accessories to adapt the cargo area to suit your needs. 

If you're looking for a cargo bike that can haul more than the Rad Power RadRunner 3 Plus, this is the model to consider.

NIU BQi-C3 Pro E-bike

10. NIU BQi-C3 Pro

There's nothing worse when running out of power when riding your electric bike, especially if you're miles from home — and at the bottom of a hill. With its dual batteries, the NIU BQi-C3 Pro is the best electric bike for those who have range anxiety, as it can give you up to 90 miles of range before you need to recharge. And, that's no boast — based on our testing, we found that 90-mile estimate to be pretty accurate, too. 

But range isn't the only thing we liked about the BQi-C3 Pro: It has mechanical disc brakes, front and rear lights, and a rear rack so you can carry things wherever you plan to go. A carbon belt drive is another nice-to-have feature, as it's quiet and easier to maintain than a traditional metal chain. Its step-through design also makes the bike easy to use for riders of all sizes; we tried it with both a 5' 11" rider and a 5' 3" rider, and both found it comfortable. 

Our only real complaint with the BQi-C3 Pro is that at 70.5 pounds, it's one of the heaviest electric bikes we've tested that's not a cargo bike, so this is not a model to buy if you have to go up any stairs. Still, the bike's 500W motor was more than powerful enough to get its bulk moving with ease. 

The bike's regular price is $2,199, but we've seen it on sale during the holidays for as low as $1,299, so wait for a sale to pick it up.

What to look for when buying an electric bike

Pedal-assist or throttle? All electric bikes have what's called pedal-assist; you start pedaling, and the bike's motor kicks in to make your ride a little easier. But you need to put in at least some work: you won't go anywhere unless you pedal. Most electric bikes will also let you set the level of assistance, so you can decide how hard you want to pedal.

However, some electric bikes will also have a throttle. Press a button or push a lever, and the bike will do all the work for you — no pedaling needed! Using a throttle will quickly eat up the battery life on the bike, so you'll get far less of a range if you don't want to pedal at all.

Motor type Less expensive electric bikes traditionally use a rear hub motor. Mid-drive motors located in the center pedal crank shaft tend to be more expensive but offer better overall balance and smoother shifting. 

Motors are also rated based on their power, measured in Watts. Typically, the least powerful motor will be 250 Watts, but unless you're a very large person or planning to go up really steep hills, the motor size shouldn’t be a major determining factor for your purchase. More important,  there is no industry standard for measuring Watts (is it continuous or peak and if peak, for how long?). So in general, a motor’s Watt rating isn’t a reliable indication of power.

Battery size Consider where you live. If you're in San Francisco you're going to want more help than if you're cruising around Austin. Watt hours (Wh) is the most important figure for comparison—it takes into account battery output and battery life to give you a better sense of available power. Higher Wh translates into more range. 

Many electric bike makers will also include an estimated range (usually about 40 miles) that you can get off a single charge. You should take this figure with a large grain of salt, as that number is usually determined under ideal circumstances: A fairly lightweight person riding on flat terrain with no wind, and at the perfect ambient temperature for the battery. Range is also dependent on the level of power assist being used, whether full-throttle has been applied and for how long, and your average speed. As they say, your mileage may vary.

Removable or built-in battery? Most bike batteries will handle rides of about 40 miles and need to be plugged in for at least a couple of hours to get to 80 percent of capacity. So if you have a more demanding commute, consider a model that lets you swap out the battery rather than a bike with an integrated battery. 

Also, if you live in a place where you can't bring your bike inside or get close to a wall outlet (such as if you live in a walk-up apartment), definitely look for a bike with a removable battery. It will make your life a lot easier.

Step-over or Step-through? Many electric bike makers will offer their bikes in two configurations: Step-over (which has a top bar that runs parallel to the ground) and Step-through (the bar is angled downwards). Once upon a time, step-through models were traditionally thought of as women's bikes, but that perception is changing. It's generally easier to get on and off a step-through bike, as you don't have to lift your leg over a bar. 

Safety features If you're planning to ride your electric bike in traffic or in low-light conditions (such as dawn and dusk), it's worth looking for an electric bike with built-in head and taillights. While increasingly common, it's not a standard feature on all models.

What are the different types of electric bike.

Generally speaking, electric bikes fall into the same categories as non-electric bikes. Here's a quick summary of some of the kinds of electric bikes you'll find.

Road bike: These are meant solely for riding on roads, and are designed for speed. They will have thinner tires and curved handlebars, so that the rider will be crouched forward. Higher-end models may also be made out of carbon fiber, so as to make the bike as light as possible.

Mountain bike : Designed for off-road use, mountain bikes will have thick, knobby tires, full suspension, and a burlier frame to better absorb bumps and jumps. 

Fat tire bikes : Similar to mountain bikes, fat tire bikes are meant to be ridden off-road, usually on very soft ground, such as mud, sand, and snow. As their name suggests, these bikes have very wide tires — as much as four inches — which helps keep a grip on unsteadier terrain.

City/Commuter bike: Made for urban dwellers who need to get around town, a commuter bike will have tires that are somewhere in between a road and a mountain bike. Generally, the bikes will be configured so that the rider's back is vertical when seated, which gives them a better view of their surroundings.

Cargo bike: These bikes are made for carrying heavy loads, and will have a cargo area either in the front or rear of the bike. Because of the payload area, these bikes often tend to me much longer and heavier — and more expensive — than a typical bike.  

What is a good speed for an electric bike?

In the U.S., electric bikes are limited to 20 miles per hour; that is, they can only provide you with power — either through pedal-assist or with a throttle — until the bike hits 20 MPH. While you can easily go faster than 20 MPH on an electric bike, the rest of that power will have to be provided by you — or gravity. 

How much does an electric bike cost?

Electric bikes range widely in price. Some of the best cheap electric bikes start at around $1,000; you can certainly find models for less, but quality will be less. 

The bulk of electric bikes cost anywhere from $1,500 to around $2,500, and there are hundreds of models in this price range.  

Higher-end and specialized electric bikes — such as cargo bikes — will cost upwards of $3,000, and can easily reach $6,000 to $8,000, which is a sizable investment.

There has been a lot of confusion about ebikes (pedal assist versus throttle bikes) and where you can legally ride them. Some municipalities have banned ebikes from bicycle paths, for example. Many places classify ebikes depending on whether they can go full throttle and have a maximum speed of 20 or 28 mph. There are three official classifications:

Class 1: Ebikes that only assist while you pedal, with a top speed of 20 mph.

Class 2: Ebikes with a throttle that don't require you to pedal but have a top speed of 20 mph.

Class 3: Ebikes that only assist while you pedal, with a top speed of 28 mph.

So check your local regulations before you buy. And always wear a helmet.

All the bicycles in this feature were road (and in some cases, off-road) tested by Tom’s Guide reviewers and staff. 

The testing process begins when we first receive the bike; as most come only partly assembled, we assess the difficulty with which we have to put the final pieces together. Typically, this involves attaching the front wheel, handlebars, and pedals, but some bikes are easier to put together than others. 

Next, we take the bikes for a ride, evaluating their comfort, handling, responsiveness of their motors — some will be faster to apply power than others — as well as how they perform over a variety of terrain and conditions. For example, if we're testing a fat-tire bike, we'll take it off-roading; if we're testing a cargo bike, we'll load it with kids and grocery bags. 

If a bike has headlights and/or taillights, we'll also check to see how bright they are in dimmer conditions. After all, you're not going to only ride it during the day. We'll also try out any other safety features, such as bells and horns. 

We also evaluate the advertised battery range of an electric bike. Many companies will offer, shall we say, optimistic range estimates based on ideal riding conditions: A light rider using the lowest level of power assist, and traveling on a level road in 70-degree conditions. 

But, that's not reflective of real-world use. While it's impossible to replicate the exact same conditions from one bike review to the next, we do our best to provide as much detail in our reviews as to how we rode the bike (terrain, pedal assist levels) to determine how close to accurate the companies' claims are.

Finally, if an electric bike comes with an app — as is becoming increasingly common— we'll test it out too, to see how easy it is to use, and how well it works with the bike itself.

  • Marc-G Hello, I noticed a couple of errors in the article around pricing on a couple of the bikes. Regarding the Gazelle Medeo T9 classic, your article list a starting price of $1999 but clicking the link takes you to their site where the least expensive model is $2499 and no model called Medeo T9 Classic is available nor can such a model be found with search. The second model is the VanMoof S3 which is listed in the article with a starting price of $1999 but going to the site shows a price of $2299. As someone trying to persuade his wife that an ebike would be a worthwhile purchase for me, I’d be grateful if you would clarify these discrepancies. One last thing. On the article itself, it says it was published 21 hours ago when it was actually published on July 21. I’m going to assume some aspect of it was updated but I can’t spot any changes to it and would appreciate it if whatever was updated could be noted somewhere. Many thanks for the article.   • gtilford One factor that seems to be missing from virtually every review-support. I have some friends who could not get parts for their ebikes for 6+months, and they were only 1 year old. I've had problems getting parts with a highly recommended brand. The bike is well made, it performs well, but parts are nearly unobtainable. A Beginner’s Guide to the Perfect Electric Bike Tire Pressure

There is a huge amount of debate around how to get the ideal e-bike tire pressure. Optimum pressure varies due to a number of factors, and because of this, there are no fixed rules. Keep in mind, the same physics and factors that apply to regular bicycles also apply to electric bikes , and there are certain guidelines that you can follow to approximate the correct pressure for an electric bike wheel. From there you can make adjustments to fine tune it.

The Effects of Tire Pressure

Physics tells us that more pressure will allow a bicycle to roll faster because the tire will deform less and have a smaller footprint on the road, both of which lead to less rolling resistance. While this is true, it is only true on a perfectly smooth road. Unfortunately, the reality is that road surfaces vary greatly, and they are rarely smooth at all.

Studies have found that decreasing pressure can actually increase speed, as small bumps are absorbed by the e-bike tires instead of reaching the actual bike. Perception of speed is increased with higher pressure because more vibrations reach the rider, making them feel like they are moving faster.

The effect is easy to understand if you have ever ridden a mountain or off-road bike with tires pumped up hard. Every bump on the trail is transferred to the rider. While a hard tire has a smaller footprint and will indeed accelerate faster, mountain bikers need a lower pressure so that the bigger tire footprint can conform to the trail and give more grip, especially when cornering.

Although there is no one ideal bike tire pressure, you can get close to what you need by considering the following factors and steps below:

More weight pushing down on the e-bike tires will compress the air inside more. The more that the rider and bicycle weigh, the more pressure is needed to counter the effect of this compression. If you are a petite rider, then you will need a much lower pressure in comparison to a larger cyclist.

Road cyclists need the highest tire pressure for their electric city bikes . Trekking cyclists or “bike packers” (similar to backpacking but with a bicycle) riding on fire trails will need a lower tire pressure, and mountain bikers need even less.

Rough terrain will require road cyclists to use a lower pressure to avoid vibrations that cause hand fatigue. Likewise, when riding off-road, a higher pressure is more suitable for hard-packed surfaces than loose sand or loam, which require a lower pressure. Keep in mind that, if your tire pressure is too low, it can cause snakebite punctures when riding off-road.

If the surface is wet, the ideal bike tire pressure will be much lower. This increases the e-bike tire’s footprint and grip. This applies to road and off-road cycling. A tire pressure that is too high is often the primary cause for crashing when road conditions are wet.

Tire Volume and Rim Width

As tire volume increases, lower pressure will be needed to get the same ride feel. The same applies to rim width. Mountain bike rims have become wider in the last few years. A wider rim allows a tire to have a greater surface volume, which grips the road better.

How to Get the Ideal Tire Pressure

  • The minimum and maximum pressure should be visible on the side of the tire. Although this is a guideline, you should not exceed the maximum. Refer to the manufacturer’s website for an approximate pressure according to your body weight, and use this as a starting point. Make adjustments according to the above considerations.
  • Get a small portable pressure gauge and inflate your tires to the correct pressure on longer rides or regular commutes.
  • Go for a ride. Take a pump and your pressure gauge with you. If you are riding on the road and notice lots of vibration, release five psi of pressure, and try again. If you are riding off-road and notice your tires bouncing off stones and roots, you should also release five psi. On the other hand, if you notice that your rim is hitting objects as you ride over them, you have far too little pressure in your tires.
  • Experiment with different pressures. If you use a GPS tracker, you can see how different tire pressures affect your speed. You can ride a short section of trail many times. Start with a low pressure, and add five psi each time until the tire starts bouncing off objects. Where did it feel best? Which pressure gave you the best grip in the corners? How does this change with different surfaces?

Be Prepared to Adjust the Pressure

While there is no perfect tire pressure, it is certainly worth taking the time to play around with it and find what pressure works best for you and your style of riding. Bear in mind that, as soon as you are riding on a different road surface or different kind of soil, the pressure you need will change. The same is true if it starts raining during a ride. The more you experiment with tire pressure, the more accurately you will be able to judge which pressure is right for you in every scenario.

At the end of the day, it costs nothing to inflate your tires a bit more or let out some air, so get out there and find the pressure that works best for you!

NCM make high-quality, but affordable electric bikes, in this review I will explain why I believe the NCM Milano is the best electric commuter bike for the money.

About NCM Electric bikes

NCM electric bikes are owned by Leon Cycle GmbH a German company based in Hanover. Their e-bikes are designed in Germany and manufactured in China.

Specification

The centrepiece of this Electric bike is the X15 geared rear hub motor: This reliable 250W rear electric motor is known for its durability and high torque output, enabling the rider to maintain 15.5mph for long periods. There is no compromise in handling with the small motor centred in the rear hub.

48v13ah Lithium battery pack with USB charging port for mobile devices: Bulky battery packs take up a considerable amount of space, but the Milano’s battery is integrated into the down tube of the bike, keeping the weight low and central, which helps to improve stability. The manufacturers claimed a maximum range of 75 miles seems a little optimistic. The total battery energy capacity is 624wh (watt hours), so if you were consuming 20wh per mile, your range would be 31 miles. My friend owns one of these bikes and gets an average range of around 40-50 miles.

This bike is built for comfort:  The Schwalbe touring tyres, Suntour front suspension, adjustable handlebar stem, Selle Royal ergonomic grips and saddle with suspension post all make for an incredibly comfortable ride, even over longer distances. The Shimano 7-Speed gears, index perfectly – shifting is crisp and precise.

Fully functional control panel display: The Das-Kit LCD gives you all the information you would expect from an e-bike display. including journey time and mileage. It also has 6 power levels of pedal assist, so you can fine-tune the power output to suit your ride.

Excellent build quality: The NCM Milano is designed to look great but with no compromise on functionality and safety. The Tektro mechanical disc brakes with 160mm rotors provide adequate braking and the brake levers incorporate motor cut-off switches to ensure safe riding. The front and rear lights work off the battery and provide an extra level of safety – especially when riding in the winter. Internal cable routing finishes off the package neatly and not only looks great but protects the cables from the elements.

In my opinion, the NCM Milano electric bike offers exceptional value for money. It is unusual to see such a high-quality, well-made e-bike at this price point. What’s more the specification is excellent. The 48v13ah battery will certainly provide users with a realistic range of between 30-45 miles, or 31 miles using the 20wh per mile calculation. The claimed range of 75 miles may be a little optimistic for everyday use – it depends on how much you use the electric assist.

Tektro Mechanical disc brakes should provide adequate stopping power, while the Schwalbe tyres will provide a reasonable amount of puncture protection.

The attention to detail on this bike is great. The internally routed cables and the integrated battery pack make for a very clean finish, something you only usually find on more expensive e-bikes.

The fact that this bike has mudguards, a pannier rack, lights and a kickstand fitted, means that it is excellent for the daily commute in all weathers, or perfect for some weekend touring. The inclusion of a gel saddle and suspension seat post make this bike a truly comfortable and versatile all-rounder.

If you are in the market for an incredibly versatile and affordable e-bike this definitely ticks all the right boxes

A friend of mine purchased one of these back in the Summer and he was kind enough to let me take it for a spin. I can honestly say it was a revelation! The gel saddle was incredibly comfortable and the small X15 hub motor was quiet and smooth. It produced a lot of power for such a small motor, making climbing the steep Cornish hills a doddle! The brakes and front suspension were more than adequate for the back lanes of Cornwall.

I really cannot recommend this bike enough. It has to be one of the best value e-bikes on the market at the moment, and the specification is great.

The great thing about this e-bike is that it is a true hybrid – it is equally comfortable being ridden on tarmac or unpaved surfaces. It can even be used for some light off-road riding.

If you are in the market for an incredibly versatile and affordable e-bike this ticks all the right boxes.

Incidentally, NCM’s other 48v 250w bike is called the NCM Moscow , I will be reviewing this bike shortly. I have personally worked on and ridden a Moscow, and it is on par with the Milano for the ride and builds quality. It uses identical electric components but in a mountain bike-style frame.

Hi! Thank you for the review! I bought Milano a week ago, so far so good. I found the first assist speed to be stronger that I’d like it to be. Is there any way to rebalance those 1-6 modes within the given range, so it starts not as strong?

Don’t know if this is still open, but I really like the Milano plus, my only question, is how easy is it to remove the battery beneath that tube? Can it be done one handed? Cornwall my home!

Turning the key releases the battery catch, then you need to lift it slightly, move it forward and remove. I would imagine it’s possible to do it one handed, but it would be fairly tricky as the battery weighs around 3kg.

bike seems well make and sturdy but i find the tyres are so skinny that when you are on slightly uneven surfaces even at a slow pace & i’m talking in number 1 setting it is dangerous and you could so easy fall off on a slightly uneven footpath. It’s ok on even ground but i wouldn’t let my wife ride it. I’ll try putting new tyres on it & see how it goes or it will be sold. In comparison i have another basic ebike in the states which is so stable this is nowhere close to and ride all types of tracks on it which is also a similar style. i would say I’m disappointed in it so far & feel its an accident waiting to happen.

I went ahead and bought the Milano and I’ve been very impressed with it so far. I was wondering if you’d know whether the 48v 16ah battery for NCM bikes would be compatible with the Milano model? I can’t seem to find a 48v 13ah battery anywhere.

An NCM Milano Plus battery should fit straight in. The 16Ah battery is the same size and uses lithium cells with a higher energy density.

J ai expérimenté le Veligo. Il me semble etre un peu similaire. Mais j ai une petite hésitation…si vous pouviez m éclairer…a t on sur le vélo le dos droit? Je pensais le prendre en taille L (28 pouces)(Je fais 1,74m) pour avoir une assise plus confortable. Je l utiliserai quotidiennement pour aller travailler. Pensez-vous que c est un bon choix? Bonjour, La taille fait référence au diamètre de la roue (28″). Tous les cadres NCM Milano sont identiques et correspondent à une taille moyenne. Cela devrait être parfait pour votre taille. La potence du guidon est également réglable, ce qui vous permet de monter le guidon encore plus haut si nécessaire. Salutations, Tony

I am seeing two different Milano Max models…N8C and N8R. They look exactly the same and with the same specifications. What is the difference?

I checked online for milano and price was 1189 Canadian dollar. On Monday I decided to buy it but unfortunately price went up to 1359$. I’m surprised as during holiday season everywhere else reducing their prices but your price was raised.
