Indeed, a few members of the Ku Klux Klan brought an uncomfortable memory to the fore with State House demonstrations in the 1990s. And, reminiscent of an earlier era, thousands gathered for a labor rally in 1995 at the State House. The Statehouse also provides an appealing site for other kinds of activities.

The Indiana Statehouse Tour Office greets over 60,000 guests per year. People of all ages walk through the massive oak doors to marvel at the majesty of the 19 th Century Neo-Classical structure. The building still houses all three branches of state government. Visitors come from all 50 states and more than 100 foreign nations.

At that time there was no formal building in which to conduct State business. State offices were scattered across the newly formed city in a host of houses and storefronts. Sessions of the General Assembly were held at the Marion County Courthouse. A new Statehouse was authorized in 1832. The building was completed in 1835 at a cost of $60,000.
