Background on the Burgundy Wine Region

Burgundy is such a legendary wine region that it’s home to multiple UNESCO World Heritage sites . The Côte de Nuits , one of the most well-known sub-regions in Burgundy, is a paradise for those seeking an intimate experience with the world of fine wines. Opting for a private tour here lets you experience the heart of Burgundy. It’s home to many of the region’s grand cru estates, where you can enjoy exceptional red wines straight from ancient wine cellars. It’s particularly celebrated for its Pinot Noir-based wines and prestigious wine estates, many of which produce wines that have aging potential far beyond those based in new world wine regions.

Aside from Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune stands out as another noteworthy wine destination known for its exquisite white wine, primarily crafted from Chardonnay grapes. Here, you can participate in private wine tours with the wine producers themselves. You’ll be guided through both large houses and family-run domains, uncovering the secrets of wine production that have been honed over centuries. Each wine estate in the Burgundy region is a story in itself, often tied to the rich history of the area, including the tumultuous times of the French Revolution and the evolution of viticulture through the ages. The best ways for wine lovers to experience the Burgundy include structured day trips or self-guided tours along the wine route. Whether it’s the Golden Slope of the Côte d’Or or the heart of Chablis, each area presents a unique story of grape varieties, wine production, and local traditions.

Burgundy is not just about tasting amazing wines; it’s about soaking up the culture and history of the area. From medieval villages, the historic Clos de Vougeot Castle, to the Côte Chalonnaise, every stop is a discovery. The region’s culinary delights, like the famous Beef Bourguignon, perfectly complement bottles of Pinot Noir. Venture past the stone walls of ancient domains, and into the heart of local life, enriched with fine wines, great food, and a treasure trove of history.

This period aligns with the grape harvest (vendanges) when the vineyards are bustling with activity. However, if you prefer quieter visits and cooler weather, spring (April to June) is also a great time to explore the region.

8 Incredibly Cool Wine Caves to Tour in Napa Valley

Wine country’s best caves include some pulled straight out of Game of Thrones and others set like a sci-fi novel

Wine likes a dark, cool, and quiet space to chill out while it makes its transformation to greatness. Fortunately, if you dig deep enough into the earth, the environment gets moist with a steady cool temperature right around 60 degrees — no air conditioning or heating needed. An underground cave makes a pretty smart place to make and store your wine while it ages in a barrel.

But what a difference some imagination, an interior designer, and an ample construction budget can make. Some Napa Valley wineries have caves that feature thrilling histories, jaw-dropping natural features, and stellar wines. If you’re looking for a luxurious and cozy place to enjoy a glass of wine, look no further.

Hourglass Winery

If the wine cave at Hourglass feels like a den for Denaerys you wouldn’t be far off: they’ve hosted Game of Thrones -themed charity wine dinners there since show writer Bryan Cogman is a big fan of the winery’s boldly balanced Cabs. Aside from the antler throne chair, the Tord Boontje crystal sculpture, and the big blue marble table, the cave owes its extra dramatic vibe to stage lighting designed by owner Jeff Smith, a rock guitarist in a previous life. Architect Olle Lundberg’s round cave door rimmed with green bottle glass makes a great selfie spot.

Davis Estates

The posh porch tasting paired with food at Davis Estates is only exceeded by the cave tasting experience reserved for Founders’ Club members. Besides receiving allocations of rare Phase V wines made by Philippe Melka, Founders’ Club members can scan their hands for admittance to the Cellarium, a glass tasting space with a stunning monkey pod wood table and a waterfall chandelier made of fine metal chains. The club is fully committed right now, but lucky visitors usually can get a peek.

Schramsberg Vineyards

When Jack and Jamie Davies founded their French-inspired sparkling wine house in 1965, they also inherited some of the oldest wine caves in the region. The sparkling wine house boasts 35,000 square feet of caves, including 12,000 square feet hand dug by Chinese laborers in 1862. As you’re touring and learning the painstaking process of making fine sparkling wines, you might notice what looks like cobwebs around the caves; but it’s actually lichen.

wine cellar tour

Brasswood Cellars

If you like peeking at lots of different styles of luxury French wine barrels, you’ve come to the right place. As a custom crush winery, Brasswood’s 14,000 square feet of caves are aging barrels from brands including Moone Tsai, Bevan, and Dalecio. The cave tasting room is also where the winery stores ita library of all the wines made since Brasswood’s first vintage in 2013. You’ll sit down at a massive live-edge table and sip a vertical of four Cabernet Sauvignons paired with cheeses including Beemster, Midnight Moon, and P’tit Basque.

wine cellar tour

Just in time for the 2022 harvest, Inglenook unveiled 22,000 feet of state-of-the-art wine caves filled with gleaming stainless steel tanks. Word has it, Inglenook’s proprietor director Francis Ford Coppola lit up like a kid on Christmas morning as he drove the Komatsu excavator that punched through a wall to join the new cave with the old ones dating back to 1872. Get cozy with a Salon Tasting Flight hosted entirely in the cave, and be sure to order a side of the chef’s mushroom pate, which pairs perfectly with older reds.

wine cellar tour

Pine Ridge Vineyards

Pine Ridge’s Cellar 47 cave tasting room was once reserved for wine club members, but the winery recently opened the Stags Leap District cave to the public. New features in the 37,000 square feet of caves include better ventilation and lighting, and plush leather and velvet seating chosen by interior designer Kristin Martin. The business won’t name names, but the Pine Ridge caves were visited recently by both NBA and NFL members who love a good glass of red wine.

Jarvis Estate Winery

William and Leticia Jarvis were ahead of the curve when they built their Atlas Mountain estate winery entirely underground back in the 1980s. Winery President Will Jarvis says his parents hired the same machines that dug the Chunnel, the undersea tunnel connecting England and France, to create their caves, which feature parabolic arches that evoke an underground cathedral. Besides the exquisite long-aged Cabs and Burgundian Chardonnay, the coolest feature at Jarvis may be the waterfall and creek that keep the caves feeling fresh.

Palmaz Vineyards

The story goes that Amalia and Julio Palmaz wanted a gravity-flow winery, so their red wines stayed silky smooth, but they couldn’t get a permit to build a winery of the needed height. So instead they bored deep into Mount George to create a massive system of high-tech caves that feel like something out of a sci-fi novel, or perhaps a Bond film. Coming back to the tasting room on the surface, you’ll be transported by the supple wines paired with eclectic savory and sweet bites.

The Rio Las Vegas is in the midst of a rebirth. Even if diners haven’t stepped inside recently, the new LED light display on the building can certainly catch their attention. Inside, the changes are just as apparent.

New owners took over operations for the Rio from Caesars Entertainment in October and have since been busy making a flashy statement. Dreamscape Companies has already renovated all 1,500 suites in the resort’s Ipanema Tower, refurbished the pool and its poolside menu, and transformed the buffet into the Canteen Food Hall . On the food side, the not-so-secret Wine Cellar Tasting Room quietly reopened a couple weeks ago, the English-style pub Luckley Tavern & Grill is set to debut this month, and the tropical Bohemian bar Lapa Lounge is expected to open by the Fourth of July. In addition, six new yet-to-be-announced restaurants will be rolled out in the months to come.

“Basically, everything in here is going to get touched,” Patrick Hoefler, the Rio’s vice president of food and beverage said.

A spread of cheese, charcuterie, and wine at the Wine Cellar Tasting Room.

The return of the Wine Cellar gives passionate oenophiles in search of hard-to-find wines a place to nest. It first opened in 1997 and, in its heyday, the Wine Cellar stored a museum-like collection of rare vintages worth more than $2.2 million. Heads of state were known to huddle in the private room and guests would routinely pop in and casually buy a $10,000 bottle of wine, sip and savor it in the basement confines, and then perhaps have another shipped home. The Cellar closed in March 2020 due to the pandemic.

Hung Nguyen has run the place for 17 years and knows every inch of the Tuscany-inspired room — all the original stone of the cave-like space was imported from Italy. He developed the wine and spirit tastings and paired them with charcuterie plates and fancy cheeses like a French Brie, creamy Camembert, and Hook’s 12-year-aged cheddar. The Wine Cellar is an experience. Surrounded by stone walls, sipping everything from everyday wines to ultra-expensive vintages, it’s easy to forget where you are and melt into the experience of living in the Tuscan hills.

Hung Nguyen poses in front of a mural and wine bottle.

While Nguyen has wine, whiskey, bourbon, tequila, and rum tasting menus at the ready; he’s often happy to tailor a tasting to the whims of an individual guest. And for those who want to dine as well as sip, the Wine Cellar hosts three-course wine dinners by partnering with VooDoo Steak and the Rio’s other restaurants. In a return to form, guests can purchase bottles or cases of wine to be shipped home to them.

Wine barrels line the stonework walls at the Wine Cellar Tasting Room.

Meanwhile, Luckley Tavern & Grill from Oliver Wharton’s A Perfect Bite hospitality group is on the brink of opening. The pub’s design draws inspiration from the English hilltown of Cotswold, while the lunch and dinner menus from chef Alex Resnick will feature items such as lollipop-style buffalo wings, lobster pot pie, a 32-ounce tomahawk steak, and table-side ice cream sundae cart. Expect an upgrade on the bar side as the Rio is adding a number of signature drinks and local beers.

A rendering of Luckley Tavern & Grill shows a wooden bar surrounded by barstools with pendant lighting overhead.

And finally, construction is underway for the tropical Lapa Lounge. The lobby bar is getting a complete makeover as Dreamscape looks to bring energy and fun into the space. The lounge, named after the lively, bohemian entertainment district in Rio de Janeiro, will have a menu of signature cocktails and serve a variety of craft beers.

A rendering of Lapa Lounge is illustrated to show colorful seating and brass animals prowling the ceiling.

“Expect a spectacle,” Hoefler explained when describing the space. Brass monkeys and jaguars will hang from the ceiling, gazing at guests from above a room that features an Italian-blown glass chandelier, a honey-onyx bar, and a veined black marble floor. Lapa Lounge will have a capacity of about 60 people with seating in both an open lounge and around the circular bar. More details on the other six restaurants are still to come.

“It’s going to be a really fun space to just meet up and hang out or have an informal meeting,” Hoefler said. “We’re putting the Rio back on the map.”

New lighting shows blue and purple LEDS on the Rio Las Vegas.
