A Complete Guide to Ohio's Amish Country

amish country ohio visit

It’s a place of stunning pastoral beauty—rolling forest-covered hills, pastures filled with grazing cattle and running horses, and red barns and weathervanes polka-dotting the landscape. A constant cavalcade of horse-drawn buggies traverse the winding roads, their bearded and bonneted occupants waving a friendly hello to those they pass.

Welcome to Ohio’s “ Amish Country ,” an area in the east-central portion of the Buckeye State, primarily in Holmes and Wayne counties but with some spillover into neighboring ones. About 45,000 of the world’s 330,000 Amish reside here, a population that at least equals and often surpasses that of the better-known Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Since 1809, when the first of their numbers arrived, they’ve been living amicably beside their “English” neighbors, a term they use to describe anyone who’s not Amish.

I grew up about 30 miles from this area and have watched it transform from a sleepy backwater to one of Ohio’s top tourist attractions, the state highways clogged with traffic on weekends, the sidewalks of Berlin (Amish Country’s largest town) thronged with visitors. Like so many others, I return here frequently, charmed by what seems like a place rooted in another time, the friendly residents happy to share details of their simple lifestyle with travelers. During these many years and multiple visits, I’ve learned not only how to beat the crowds but where to find the best bets of what to do and experience.

When you first arrive, get yourself a map. Yes, an old-fashioned paper map since GPS sometimes fails in this very rural area. Make sure it’s a detailed map outlining the many county and township roads that wind their way through this hilly country. Then just point your car down one of them and travel in whatever directions look appealing. Not only will you get away from those crowded highways, but you’ll also see the Amish people living their lives—farmers at work in their fields, women hanging out the laundry, children walking to and from their one-room schoolhouses. Plus, you’ll find dozens of little shops with Amish artisans selling their hand-made candles, leather goods, baskets, or brooms, sometimes in shops beside their homes.

Let yourself happily get lost in this gorgeous landscape.

What to See and Do

To visit a working Amish farm, go to The Farm at Walnut Creek , where you can watch plowing, threshing, sowing, and milking, and inside the typical Amish home, you can see quilting and baking demonstrations. Up on the hilltop behind the farm, there’s a whole ranch of hundreds of exotic animals, including giraffes, lemurs, bison, kangaroos, and zebras. You can either drive through on your own or take a wagon ride where guides provide a running narrative. In either case, the animals can get up close and personal. (A prized photo I have of my brother is of him literally going nose to nose with a camel.)

In the evenings, you can now do more than just sit and digest your heavy Amish dinner. Nightlife options include two theaters, including the 512-seat Ohio Star Theater, which offers a cavalcade of productions, even Amish musical comedies! Down the road, Amish Country Theater offers a frequently changing variety show with comedy skits interspersed with musical acts.

Also consider a stop at the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center , where the highlight is the Behalt, a 10-by 265-foot cyclorama illustrating the history of Amish and Mennonite people from their 16th-century beginnings in Switzerland to the present day. The brilliantly colored 360-degree painting took 14 years to complete. In Sugarcreek, a must-see is the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock, a 24-foot-tall structure with displays on the half hour of hand-carved whirling dancers with a wooden Bavarian oompah band playing polkas.

Your serendipitous driving might not take you past some of the must-sees in Amish Country, so you might consider booking an excursion with a company like Troyer Amish Tours , whose proprietor, Richard Troyer, has Amish blood in his lineage and has spent a lifetime learning every corner of Amish Country. His two- to three-hour van tours are customized to whatever his guests want to see or experience, and along the way, Troyer gives insight into the Amish religion and lifestyle. He’ll point out things you otherwise might not notice on your own, like the solar panels atop some people’s homes. Yes, the Amish are allowed to have electricity, provided they produce it themselves and are not connected to the grid.

Both Troyer’s and another company, Amish Heartland Tours , also can arrange dinners at Amish people’s homes, allowing you to interact with an Amish family face-to-face and learn fascinating details about their lives. One Amish woman once told me how she and her neighbors compete on laundry day to get the clothes out on the line first. You might even hear a little Amish humor, like the joke about the Amish flu: First you get a little hoarse, then you start feeling buggy.

What to Eat in Amish Country

Think of Amish cuisine as an extreme form of comfort food—fried chicken, beef and noodles, a peanut butter spread with honey mixed into it, even noodles piled atop mashed potatoes. A few unique twists include the Amish propensity to pickle anything in sight, like eggs, beets, or garlic. They’re also fond of salads, like the Haystack, with its many layers of vegetables, ground beef, and even crushed Doritos. A special regional delicacy is Trail Bologna, made in the tiny town of Trail. Wood-smoked and with a special blend of seasonings, this bologna heated up as a warm sandwich with melted Swiss cheese on top is a small piece of heaven.

And it’s an understatement to say the Amish have a sweet tooth. They’re especially famed for their pies—both the straight-ahead variety and also Amish “fry pies” with the filling inside a fried, half-moon shaped crust that can be eaten in your hands.

One of the legendary dining destinations in Amish Country is Der Dutchman in the hilltop town of Walnut Creek (try to get a seat by the window with its sweeping views) and its sister restaurant, Dutch Valley, adjacent to the Ohio Star Theater. At both these establishments, dinners can be served a la carte or family style with huge serving dishes brought to your table. Nowadays, servers ladle out whatever you request from the famed all-you-can-eat buffet. Do NOT forget to leave room for a piece of one of the two dozen kinds of pies available.

My favorite restaurant is Mrs. Yoder’s Kitchen in Mount Hope where all the classic Amish items are on the menu as well as more nontraditional fare like stuffed pepper loaf or cabbage casserole with mushroom sauce and onions. The choices differ every day based on whatever Gloria Yoder or her staff feel like whipping up. I’m also partial to a place called Chalet in the Valley, where the Swiss and Austrian cuisine includes schnitzel and bratwurst.

Swiss cheese is perhaps the main culinary draw in Ohio’s Amish Country. At Heini’s Cheese Chalet, more than 80 varieties are available, but my personal favorite is Guggisberg Cheese, where the milder, creamier Baby Swiss variety originated. You can watch the cheese being produced through large windows in the retail shop, housed in an impossible-to-miss structure with a distinctive bell tower.

Any number of bakeries offer enticing fare, including ones adjacent to Der Dutchman and Heini’s, but make it a point to find a little hole-in-the-wall place way out in the countryside called Miller’s Bakery. Inside an unremarkable cinder-block structure on a narrow township road, an alluring array of fresh-baked breads, pies, and pastries can be found, which you’ll smell even before you walk in the door. Miller’s is especially known for its seven kinds of cheese tarts, cookies the size of pies, and enormous apple fritters. It’s best to get there early in the day. By noon, the baked-fresh-each-day items are starting to sell out.

Where to Stay

Accommodations in Amish Country range from the upscale to rustic cabins surrounded by woodlands. Be aware that many establishments require a minimum two-night stay during high season.

Upscale lodging options include The Inn at Honey Run , an adults-only resort on 56 largely wooded acres where choices include rooms inside the inn itself, hillside “honeycombs” built into the earth, and private cottages. Onsite fine dining is also available. Next door, The Barn Inn appears to be one of the red barns on an Amish farm—and long ago, it once was! It’s now been renovated top to bottom and transformed into a bed-and-breakfast with deluxe rooms, each with its own distinctive decorations.

In Berlin, Donna’s Premier Lodging offers cottages, suites, and villas all within walking distance of downtown and secluded chalets and cedar log cabins in the woods outside town. A number of special add-on packages are available for those looking for a romantic getaway.

My favorite is Holmes With A View , a half-dozen one- and two-bedroom suites complete with fireplaces and kitchens on a ridge overlooking the breathtaking Doughty Valley. A number of Amish farms are close by and the charming little town of Charm is off in the distance.

Shopping in Amish Country

Berlin, the unofficial “capital” of Amish Country, offers the greatest concentration of shops in one place with a bit of everything available, including a huge antiques mall. Just outside town, Schrock’s Heritage Village has a number of interesting retail outlets like a leather store and Ohio’s largest all-year Christmas shop. Farther down the same highway, the Walnut Creek Amish Flea Market has 50 vendors under one roof. And on a hilltop overlooking Charm, Keim Lumber has recently rebranded itself as simply “Keim,” which is fitting because so much more than building supplies can be found in its cavernous 125,000-square-foot space, including housewares, toys, and games.

Similarly, Lehman’s Hardware in Kidron sells a whole lot more than nuts and bolts and has become a tourist destination in its own right. Even bus tours stop here. When it opened six decades ago, it catered primarily to the Amish, stocking merchandise that didn’t require electricity, like old-time cooking stoves. Nowadays, much more modern merchandise can be found in its nearly quarter-mile long series of showrooms. But you can still find a butter churn if you want one!

Ohio’s Amish have made a name for themselves making cabinetry and furniture, with 400 local manufacturers and 30 retail stores selling their finely crafted work. Larger places like Homestead Furniture also sell gazebos and lawn furniture and have an interior design department offering advice. I prefer popping into the many smaller establishments like Farmerstown Furniture, where the cherry rocking chair in my living room was made.

Likewise, Amish quilts are in high demand with places like Gramma Fannie’s Quilt Barn and Helping Hands Quilt Shop being good places to see or shop for these exquisite works of folk art, many with unique Amish motifs. I always take first-time visitors to Miller’s Dry Goods in Charm, where you can not only see the quilts but can also purchase material from the 8,000 bolts of fabric to make your own.

But remember…there are all manner of little shops out on those country roads selling everything from Polish pottery to hand-made belts, hickory rockers, weather vanes, and roll-top desks. Perhaps you’ll even find an Amish woman and her children selling baskets beside the road. Take time for some conversation—you may well be talking to the person who’s made what you’re buying!

What is the best Amish town?

Amish Country, Ohio consists of the villages of Millersburg, Berlin, Walnut Creek, Sugarcreek, Charm, and Mt. Hope; but there are many other small villages in the area.  The neighboring counties of Wayne, Coshocton, and Tuscarawas also have an Amish & Mennonite presence and tourist attractions.

Millersburg is the county seat of Holmes County and the largest town. There is no bad spot to center yourself in Amish Country, there are pockets of Amish all over Holmes County. If you prefer to stay on the main roads, State Route 39 from Millersburg to Sugarcreek is the main thoroughfare for finding most dining and shopping.

Planning a trip to Amish Country, Ohio - Millersburg, Ohio is the county seat of Holmes County and can serve as a nice base for exploring the surrounding Amish communities.

Where to stay in Ohio’s Amish Country

When planning a trip to Amish Country, visitors will realize that there is a range of accommodations for all budgets and preferences.  Travelers can have their pick of chain hotels, bed & breakfasts, and smaller inns. For visitors seeking a unique experience, choose to sleep in a honeycomb suite , treehouse , a converted barn , or tiny home .

Amish Country is the perfect place for a romantic getaway, too.  Most accommodations are set up for couples.  Visitors will have no problem finding something for every budget.

Planning a trip to Amish Country, Ohio - Amish Country has lodging options for all budgets. Cabin rentals are becoming more popular.

If you’re traveling to Amish Country with children, look for hotels that offer suites.  The Wallhouse Hotel in Walnut Creek and the Berlin Grande Hotel in Berlin are both good options. (Here’s my review of the Wallhouse Hotel ). The Bluebird Cottage in Western Holmes County is the perfect place for families to enjoy time together after exploring Amish Country together.

If you’re trying to stay somewhere that is convenient to shopping and attractions, I recommend staying in Berlin or Walnut Creek. However, the Millersburg area is nice for a weekend stay because most things in Berlin & Walnut Creek are closed on Sundays. (Visiting on the weekend? Check out my list of things to do on a Sunday ).

Looking for more space to spread out?  Check out VRBO ! There are some great apartments and cabins in the area. Here is also a list of my favorite places to stay in Amish Country.

The best season to visit Amish Country, Ohio

Fall is the most popular time to visit Amish Country.  There’s something about pumpkins, corn stalks, and falling leaves that makes the area even more magical. October is also the month that Sugarcreek hosts the Swiss Festival and Millersburg is host to the Antique Festival . That said, weekends during October tend to be the most expensive and sought-after time.

Fall is the perfect time to plan a visit to Amish Country.

June through September are also busy months in Amish Country.  The weather is typically warm and pleasant, but sometimes July and August can be hot and muggy!  However, July is a good time to watch Amish farmers baling hay.

One of my favorite times to visit Amish Country is in early May when the weather first turns warmer, but the crowds have yet to arrive.  Visiting in the off-season of late November is also fun because many shops are full of Christmas decor and it’s a great time to do Christmas shopping.  There are also plenty of Holiday Events on the calendar to keep you busy ( see my list of Amish Country holiday events HERE ).

Make a note that when visiting in the colder months, outdoor dining and some of the tourist attractions will be closed. Many businesses shut their doors from Christmas – March.

Hi Richard! Are you asking about the Farmers Market in Millersburg? It usually begins on Saturday mornings in mid-May. There are other small farmers’ markets throughout the county – Memorial Day – late September is your best bet for these. The Berlin Village Inn or The Inn at Walnut Creek would probably be good bets for what you’re asking.

The Inn at Walnut Creek is a great spot – thanks for sharing!

Ohio Amish Country Visitor's Guide

Why should you visit us? It wasn’t long ago that we were sleepy, little hamlets tucked gently into pockets of the beginnings of Appalachia and the surrounding states. Our hills are verdant and misty leading you to believe you may be arriving in a fairy tale landscape instead of Ohio, Indiana, or Pennsylvania. Most folks tell of exiting the freeway and having the curious feeling of driving into the middle of nowhere. Our gently undulating hills guiding them, pulling them slowly ever further into the lushness that we are.

We are middle America, proud of our heritage with much respect for our lands. Our farms are scattered across the richness of the area, Amish and English alike, and we celebrate our agricultural heritage. Beef, chicken, and pork are raised the old fashioned way here, and its wonderful flavors are savored throughout the year as we butcher and put aside meat for the winter. Our joy of home is also shown by how riotously colorful our gardens are and by what shade of green our grass is. If you take the time to drive through the countryside you will more than likely see large perennial gardens lush and in bloom. Watch for Lilies, Hydrangeas white and blue, fringy Ferns, and Hostas green and canopy-like. Our autumns are known for their fire-drenched hillsides burning bright with fall color, the leaves bright for a moment before the dropping away.

Ohio Amish Country Visitor's Guide

We are Amish Country . We are proud, yet humble communities that gather together when trouble hits and know how to appreciate when all is well. You can find us at our children’s baseball or soccer games, and at home enjoying family. Our pace is just a shade slower, richer. We have much to offer in hospitality and places to meander through. Come get lost on our back roads. Dine well in our delicious, small restaurants. Find the places you can stay overnight from a refurbished shabby chic camper to our finest hotels. Or stop in and sit with us on our shaded front porches and watch the evening turn into starry night replete with lightning bugs. You won’t be disappointed.

The communities in Ohio's Amish Country provide the kind of meandering back roads that make for relaxing getaways and day trips. Go for a long drive to soak in a more simple way of life as you watch the Amish workers in the fields and see laundry drying on the line.

Tucked away in these small communities are hidden gems of family-owned stores and experiences that are worth a stop, if you can find them.

The five-county region in northeast Ohio, which includes Holmes , Adams , Geauga , Wayne, and Tuscarawas counties, is considered Ohio's Amish Country, with working farms and rolling landscapes. You will not find advertisements for things to do in Amish Country because what exists here supports their quiet way of life.

Discover the best places to visit in this peaceful region with our list of the highlights of Ohio's Amish Country.

Amish Country Byways

The Amish Country Byway is 160 miles of designated roadways that take you through the most scenic routes of Ohio's Amish Country in Holmes County. One of the most prized things to do in Amish Country is drive through the rolling hills and enjoy the simple life that you see out the window.

As one of Ohio's Scenic Byways , you will drive past quaint homes, B&Bs, and boutique resorts, like The Inn at Honey Run , to experience the quiet country living in this serene part of the state. Stop for a homemade meal at one of the many local restaurants that you pass along the way or pick up fresh meat and produce from a roadside stand. If you have time to spare, plan two to three days to enjoy the byway experience and just see where the road takes you.

You can plot your stops for the night or play it by ear. Keep in mind that once night falls in Amish Country, there are few lights for navigation, so you are best to make your evening meal and lodging arrangements during the daylight hours. Maps of the byway are available from the Ohio Department of Transportation or the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce .

Yoder's Bargain Store

Yoder's Bargain Store in Fredericksburg is one of the great finds in Ohio's Amish Country, partly because it is truly a hidden gem. Marked only by a small rock along the berm of the road, the store is where the Amish come to buy their goods as indicated by the number of horse and buggies that you will see tied up outside.

The bargain store is on the property of an Amish family, and while it is open to the public, you might feel a bit intrusive pulling up the mile-long private driveway. Rest assured, it is okay. Once inside the barn, it is a shopper's paradise. You will find glassware, cookware, homeopathic ointment, wool hats, children's clothes, purses, work gloves, candy, religious figurines, and trinkets that cost only pennies on the dollar compared to a traditional store.

Part of the thrill of visiting Yoder's Bargain Store is the discovery of items you did not know you needed. There are several floors for perusing and aisles of shelves with miss-match items that are all for sale. The only light in the store is from small windows to the outside. If you visit, take cash. This is an Amish store, so they do not take credit cards and do not even have a register.

You will find leather work boots, shoes, and other leather goods. Since the store caters to the Amish, you can also find custom-made horse saddles and shoe repair services. You may even find yourself making a trip back every few years just for new boots.

Walnut Creek Cheese

Walnut Creek Cheese is an experience worth the drive. The store is full of fresh homemade baked food and is a paradise for cooks. You can buy cooking ingredients in bulk, which makes it a great place to stock up on items that can be expensive at grocery stores. You can stock up on locally made cheese and a wide selection (more than 75 varieties) of fresh jams and jellies that are made in Holmes County. The bakery in the store will no doubt tempt your senses with the bread and pies that are still warm when they are put onto the shelves. The produce section sells fresh products direct from local Amish and Mennonite farms.

The gift shop has plenty of kitchenware items that you may have never seen before. Amish cookbooks are available with some of the best recipes you will find anywhere for comfort food.

End of the Commons General Store

As you walk from one room to the next, there is no shortage of old time toys and trinkets for sale, like x-ray goggles and bike streamers. The store sells hard-to-find baking ingredients, cooking utensils, and cookie cutters.

The large glass cooler in the front of the store is like an old-school time machine. It is filled with glass bottle soda pop and more than 150 selections, like Route 66 Cream Soda and Capt'n Eli's Orange Pop. You will even find unique apothecary items at the store and soaps from another era, like Grandma's Lye soap.

Throughout the store, antiques and memorabilia decorate the walls and ceiling. It is a fun trip back in time that will keep you there longer than you think you will stay.

A stop at the Depot is a refreshing way to break up your visit to Amish Country, and it's a place where you can order old-fashioned sodas and sundaes while taking in some of the local history.

The shop is in an old B&O Railroad depot that was built in 1874. It was destroyed by fire and re-built in 1910 and eventually turned into an ice cream parlor. The Depot features historical memorabilia, and the building has a covered front porch where you can take a few minutes to relax. Be sure to check out the caboose car next to the depot.

Address: 14979 S. State Avenue, Middlefield, Ohio

A visit to the Farm at Walnut Creek in Sugarcreek gives you a unique behind-the-scenes look at farm life in Amish Country . You will see first-hand how the Amish plow the fields and operate the farm without electricity.

You can also step inside an Amish home to see demonstrations on things like canning and quilting. There are more than 500 animals on the farm, including some exotic animals like zebras, camels, emus, and kangaroos . There are many animals more common to Ohio like deer and sheep. There are occasional events held throughout the year at the farm, and sleigh rides in the winter if the weather accommodates them.

Address: 4147 County Road 114, Sugarcreek, Ohio

Amish Cheese Tours

One of the best and most delicious things to do in Amish Country is visit a cheese factory and take a cheesemaking tour. You will see several cheese factories as you drive, and most offer daily tours. Bunker Hill Cheese in Millersburg and Guggisberg Cheese in Sugarcreek offer quality products and tours. You can go behind-the-scenes to see the process of how local cheese is made using local products and labor.

Cheese tours always end with samples of the product. You will find specialty cheeses in these stores that you will not find elsewhere. You can also stock up on favorite varieties for a great price, which will be substantially lower at factory stores than in your local grocery.

Be sure to look for snack bags that offer cheese crumbles, which are factory leftovers that are bagged for quick sale, but they make great snacks.

Some of the freshest meats you can buy are straight from the farm at Baltic Meats in Baltic, Ohio. All meat curing and smoking is done in-house, and all meats are locally raised.

If you are looking for fresh meat and cheese to take home, this is a good stop since all meats are cut fresh daily, and the cheese is locally made. Your best bet is to bring a cooler and stock up.

Address: 3457 State Route 93, Baltic, Ohio

Amish Country Riding Stables

If you prefer to enjoy a more active visit to Amish Country, you can take a horseback ride through some of Ohio's beautiful countryside with Amish Country Riding Stables. The guided horseback trips are offered with small groups of only two to five riders at a time. This is one of the best ways to enjoy the area for both experienced and inexperienced riders.

Rides typically last around 45 minutes, so you can include this along with several other stops in one day. If you do not want to ride, you can just stop to enjoy the elegant horses on the property. In the winter, horse-drawn carriage rides are a huge draw in this pristine landscape.

They are arranged through the Guggisberg Swiss Inn and Amish Country Riding Stables. Rides fill up quickly and depend on the weather, so it is best to look into reservations early to reserve a spot.

Address: 5025 SR 557, Millersburg, Ohio

Official site: http://www.amishcountryridingstables.com/

It is best to stay in a central location like Berlin at the Berlin Grande Hotel or in Walnut Creek at The Wallhouse Hotel or the Carlisle Inn Walnut Creek , then plan day trips in the region. There are also many bed and breakfasts through Amish Country, with peaceful views of the countryside and serving homemade breakfasts using locally-grown products.

The best times to visit Amish Country are in the late spring, when flowers are in bloom and before the summer tourist season, and in the fall, when the changing colors on the leaves are stunning next to the rolling hills of the countryside.

Winter has its own appeal, with holiday decorations and activities like sleigh rides, but these months have fewer outdoor options and limited hours for shops and attractions. Summer is the busy tourist season, meaning there will be more crowds and longer wait times for tours and attractions. Sunday is not the best day to visit anytime of the year, as everything is closed in the area.

Given the culture of the Amish people, visiting the region comes with its own etiquette.

Driving is the first consideration. You will be sharing the road with horse-drawn buggies that are often going less than eight miles per hour, so you want to drive carefully, especially when maneuvering around them. Roads in Amish Country are also narrower, with lots of curves, requiring your full attention on the roadway.

Photography is another consideration. The Amish and Mennonite cultures forbid posing for photos and taking photos, so you should be respectful of their beliefs as a visitor. While there are great photographs to capture in the countryside and in the villages, you should not photograph Amish people without their permission.

Best things to do in Ohio’s Amish Country

1) visit behalt;  while this is a different kind of attraction in holmes county… you’ll learn so much at the cyclorama mural, called behalt..

In the book, Midwest Road Trip Adventures, I say, “Don’t explore this area until you know more about the people and their culture.”

Behalt should be your first stop and you will be taken on a short 25-minute tour of anabaptist history with your Amish tour guide. Your guide will answer your questions and help you understand this simple lifestyle and the beautiful faith-filled people.

Their Mission:

  • To accurately inform visitors about the faith, culture, and lifestyle of the Amish, Mennonite, and Hutterite peoples.
  • To extend a warm welcome and hospitality to guests among us.
  • To interpret the heritage of our people to both tourists and our own faith community.
  • To invite visitors to meet the Christ of our culture, His uniqueness, and claim upon our lives and customs.

5798 County Road 77 Millersburg, Ohio 44654

Hours: Monday-Saturday April-October: 9AM-5PM November – March 9:30AM-4:30PM **Closed Sunday**

#2 Visit Hershberger’s Farm and Bakery

Ok. I admit this is one of my favorite bakeries in Holmes County, Ohio. Every time I come to Amish Country the fry pies call me in…it just happens.

Ohio’s Amish country offers many unique experiences and moments; however, there is no other stop in Holmes County quite like Hershberger’s Farm and Bakery in Millersburg. You’ll find the farm situated right off State Route 557, one of Ohio’s most beautiful scenic by-ways.

Things you can do here:

  • Feed the animals in the petting zoo.
  • Take a buggy ride.
  • Grab a snack to eat outside and enjoy the scenery
  • Shop the antiques.
  • Buy some leather products
  • Stock up on Fry Pies and all the good stuff

#5 Drive the Amish Scenic Byway

If you have your own vehicle and enjoy rural views, I highly recommend spending some time doing some scenic drives through the country roads. Every mile of state and federal highway in Holmes County is designated as an Ohio Scenic Byway.

You might try this 106-mile  “Amish Country Byway” drive which will take you past many of the main sights in Amish Country Ohio.

Just drive slowly and carefully as you’ll likely pass slow-moving horse-drawn buggies along the way!

#6 Farm at Walnut Creek

“A visit to the Farm at Walnut Creek in Sugarcreek gives you a unique behind-the-scenes look at farm life in Amish country. This working farm allows you to take a wagon tour of the land that is worked by a local Amish family and interact with some of the animals. You will see first-hand how the Amish plow the fields and operate the farm without electricity.”

You can also step inside an Amish home to see demonstrations on things like canning and quilting. The Farm at Walnut Creek has more than 500 animals on the farm, including some exotic animals like zebras, camels, emus, and kangaroos. You will also see many native Ohio animals like deer and sheep.

#7 Weavers Farm and Furniture

This sweet stop is one of my favorite places and especially on a Wednesday. Why Wednesday, you ask? Maybe it is because they serve 1 free pretzel per visitor! These homemade pretzels are the BEST! If you are feeling lunch-ish they have a wonderful menu of homemade sandwiches and sides.  You can picnic nearby at the Bridge of Dreams or Honey Run Falls.

Family fun seekers can enjoy the free petting zoo and feed the chickens while mom shops for some new furniture.

#9 Leman’s Hardware Store … It’s Worth the Trip!

When planning your stop here, carve out at least 1-2 hours because you will want to explore every inch of this place! Lehman’s is known for homesteading and tools of yesteryear; however, you can find plenty of offerings that can be used in your everyday.

What you will find here:

  • Health and wellness
  • Kitchen Tools (My favorite section)
  • Kids section

Make sure you take time to see these special places inside the Kidron Store; The Museum of Light, featuring Aladdin Lamps, Cast Iron Cafe for a meal or snack, and the stunning hand-carved art room featuring the works of Paul Weaver.

“Lehman’s stands for a simpler life. Wherever you are on your journey to a simpler life, we can help you take the next steps.” Lehman’s Hardware Store

#11 Wilderness Center

We love this hidden gem 💎  I am adding it to this list even though it is just outside the NE corner of Holmes County… it’s close enough!

“This 619-acre site has 10 miles of hiking trails with several connecting routes. On the trails, you can see old-growth forest, meadows, prairie, wetlands, Fox and Sugar Creeks, Wilderness Lake, and a pond. You can wander through nature for hours.” This is the truth too! We have spent countless hours here exploring the paths, viewing birds from inside the nature center, and shopping at their store.

If you love green spaces and the outdoors don’t miss this stop.

#12 Doughty Valley Steam Days

One of the events that come every year is the Doughty Valley Steam Days in Charm. Held in the summer on ST RT 557 this antique tractor show is hard to miss. Steam tractor lovers will be enthralled with the large display that gathers together.

What is a Steam Thresher? A threshing machine is a piece of farm equipment that threshes grain, that is, it removes the seeds from the stalks and husks. It does so by beating the plant to make the seeds fall out.

A few things to know:

Experience a live antique consignment auction

Watch the steam-powered sawmill

Experience the SPARK SHOW at dusk!

#13 Eat in an Amish Home and Take a Back Road Tour

Troyer’s Amish Tours is on my bucket list! I am adding it to my top 25 since it is on my list of things to do in Amish Country for this year.

I look forward to 1.5-2 hour trip that will be guided by the owner Rich Troyer. He was raised here and knows all the in and outs of this quiet and rural community. I can’t wait to learn from a local.

Another amazing thing that this tour offers is that you can eat in a real Amish Home! There are lots of good places to eat here in Holmes County, but imagine being the personal guests of an Amish family with a home-cooked meal like no other set out before you in a home full of hospitality.

A few things to note about the in-home meals:

  • The Amish Meal and Tour combo package can be booked with a group minimum of 8 people. For a private combo tour, the minimum of 8 people fee must be met.
  • One week advance notice needed unless another availability is an option.

“Everyone’s got their reasons for visiting, so every tour I give is personalized to meet those reasons.” Rich Troyer, owner

#13 Authentic Amish Bakery … Miller’s Bakery (even the locals call it authentic!)

While staying at The Cabin at Scenic Hills we learned about this bakery from our Air B and B hosts. They said, “It’s like it always has been and has not changed. Get some of the tarts they are the best!”

We went early in the morning before the crowds. The sun was cresting over the hills and the morning fag was just starting to burn off as we found the old sign at the bottom of the road and veered off. As we got out of the car we could start to smell the baked good but when we open the door our senses were assailed with the deliciousness.

Put this on your MUST visit bakery list!

#14 Go Camping in Amish Country 🏕

Everyone stays in cabins, cottages, and hotels but camping here in Amish Country can’t be beat. The quiet serenity of this small section of Ohio is pretty unique and enjoying the sounds of horses clip clipping by your campsite is the best.

Scenic Hills RV Park

Situated off the main route but close to everything. Self-contained units only. This RV park caters to the 30+ crowd.

Berlin RV Park

Located on the main route through Holmes County makes this campground great for location but a bit noisy for road traffic. (at this time of this writing we have not stayed here however we have driven through and checked it out. Very clean)

Amish Country Campsites

You will find these campsites in the North-East corner of the county and in one of the more quieter locations.

Evergreen RV Park

Extremely family-friendly, indoor pool, game room, and all the extras.

Whispering Hills Jellystone RV Park

30 minutes from the heart of Amish country but worth the drive. Great views of the surrounding countryside, pool, game room, huge store, and all the amenities for the family.

Timbercrest RV Park

Another off-the-beaten-path campground but offers everything you are looking for in camping. They have a shower house, laundry room, free wifi, playground, and nature trails. (at this time of this writing we have not stayed here, however we have driven through and it is very clean and well maintained)

#15 Eat with the Locals at Boyd and Wurthmann’s

Lovingly known as B and W’s this community staple has been around for as long as I can remember, since 1938 to be exact! The nostalgic feeling you get as you come through the doors is legit and they still have the counter with the green vinal stools ready for you.

  • Grab some homemade pie
  • Order a special
  • Use the Amish Peanut Butter

Pro-Tip: Go when they open for breakfast to beat the crowd and do an early dinner so you don’t have to wait in the long line that goes out the door and down the sidewalk during peak dining hours.

#16 Spend the day at Shrock’s Heritage Village

If you are short on time in Amish Country, make sure to put this stop at the top of your list. You will find everything you want to experience in the area located in this complex!

What you will see here is the Berlin Antique and Craft Malls, Leather and Shoe, Berlin Pets, and Streb’s General Store all within walking distance of one another. If you want a snack or a place to eat Olde World Bistro is right on the property as well.

Just down the hill past the craft mall, you will come to The Amish Country Theater ! This side-splitting variety act will have you rolling on the floor. Believe me, if you know anything about this area you KNOW there is nothing to do after 5 pm…this theater will have your evening covered.  Check out the promotional video to see what I mean YouTube Video Link

If you have not found a place to stay they have you covered too! Shrock’s Guest House is perfect for a secluded family getaway or the Berlin Encore Hotel and Suites.

Last but certainly not least is Tis’ the Season, Ohio’s largest and best year around Christmas Store! When I need a little Christmas in July, this is where I come.

#17 Mel’s Amish Buggy Ride …  Ride in a Real Amish Buggy!’

Located in the heart of Berlin, Ohio, you’ll find Mel’s Amish Buggy Rides. He doesn’t have a building or anything special like that. You give him a call, and he will meet you to give you a ride through the town of Berlin.

If you’re looking for a buggy ride on a farm or out in the country, you can check out Hershberger’s Farm or Yoder’s Amish Home.

Mel doesn’t have a website…He is Amish. You just call and set up your ride.

#18 Stay for the night or a week! Here are some of our favorite places to stay in Amish Country.

The Inn at Honey Run

Romantic, unique, and delightful!

Blessings Cabins

One of our favorites and we loved each suite we have stayed in.

4 Bedroom home with beautiful views sleeps 10

2 minutes from Berlin, Ohio with gorgeous views and plenty of room!

Barn Inn Bed and Breakfast

Quaint and off the beaten path, yet close to it all.

Holiday Inn Express Millersburg

Brand new and super clean, located on the outskirts of Millersburg

Cabin at Scenic Hills

One of our personal favorites and is the photo highlighted in this section. We enjoy evenings by the firepit, relaxing on the deck, and the perfect space for our family.

#19 Housewares 77 … A true Amish Country Store

Since my kids were little, they have wanted to stop here to get a kitschy little toy from this unique Amish store. Like most Amish stores, it is plain and simple, yet inside you find all kinds of neat little things for your home and family.

Looking for a family game to play after 5 pm at your cabin? Grab Dutch Blitz here for a rowdy time of fun. How about that small needed kitchen item? They have all kinds of unique finds.

For me, I just love walking in and hearing the sound of the gas lights, the open hospitality, and the enjoyment I find browsing the things that these simple people use every day.

#20 Eat ALL the ice cream!

You can find some wonderful ice cream places in Ohio’s Amish Country! We have a few stops that we try to go to as often as possible.

#21 Experience The Der Dutchman at Walnut Creek and Carlise Inn

While many places can draw you, let this stop make your shortlist.

We really really enjoy the buffet at “The Der” and have been coming here…forever.

Funny story; My mom has a picture of me about 12 years old standing by a horse and buggy with my arms crossed and my little brother sticking out his tongue…even with “family moments” like that this location is one of my favorites.

The Carlise Inn is one of the most scenic places to stay. On the one side of the hotel, your balcony faces the road where you have views of the Amish in the mornings and evenings and on the valley side you get the lovely sights of the countryside. Your choice!

Pro-Tip: **Best scenic view of Holmes County is from the Der Dutchman parking lot**

#23 Best Places to Eat in Amish Country

Why do many people come to Amish Country? TO EAT! Can I get a yes and amen to that!!! I come here to eat too. I look forward to biting into that crunchy chicken or that tasty pie. Mmmm Hmmm! Here are a few of our favorite places to eat.

Mrs. Yoder’s

  • Best chicken in Holmes County!

Rebecca’s Bistro

  • I’m selfish and didn’t want to write about this place because it is so dang good, and I don’t want it to be any busier than it already is. HOWEVER, I am sharing, and it is worth the wait.
  • Best sandwiches and Jamcain Me Crazy coffee is so good
  • Real mashed potatoes and homemade bread are the best!
  • Fine dining in Holmes County! It was pricy but OH SO WORTH IT! I can’t wait to go back sometime in the future. <3 #re-bucketlisted

#23 Winesburg Meats

If you don’t know about it you can’t go…after this blog post, you now know about Winesburg Meats. We stumbled into this little shop years ago while camping at Amish Country Campsites. Our reason for stopping was because we wanted something to grill at the campsite, but we found so much more.

Family-owned and operated business since 1959.   We have been making quality products ever since. The equipment and technology may have changed over our three generations but many of the recipes are still very close to our founder’s originals. Still no artificial preservatives, soy, gluten-free, or fillers, and all that other junk that is in most other products out there on the marketplace.

Our family likes the no-fillers all-beef hot dogs. When you bite into these hot dogs the casing crunches, the deliciousness bursts through, and your mouth comes alive with happiness. Another gleason favorite is the beef jerky…YUM!

Pro-Tip: When you come to Holmes County bring a cooler so you can take home some of the wonderful products you find here.

#25 Ashery Country Store

You can find other Amish-style grocery stores throughout the countryside but the Ashery Country Store is one of my favorites. While it has grown since I was a little girl, they have kept its simple charm.

You will find bulk foods, deli meats, cheese & more – fresh to your kitchen at this store in the middle of the county. It’s fun to shop and explore to decide what you want to take home and use!

Cricket Hill Cabins

Located in the heart of Amish country, Cricket Hill Cabins has three standalone cabins nestled in the woods. While each of these cabins is secluded enough to spark romance, we recommend the Grapevine Cabin . The Grapevine Cabin is set back in the woods and overlooks a wooded ravine, perfect for taking in the sunrise. Visitors park and take a short walk across a bridge and up a small hill, following the gravel path to the cabin.

The cozy bed is tucked away in an upstairs loft, and there is a plush couch that sits in front of a fireplace. Guests can enjoy a fire ring and outdoor hot tub, an indoor bathtub big enough for 2, a fully functional kitchen, and rocking chairs on the front porch that add to the rustic charm.

A cabin tucked away from the world sets the scene for romance.

Donna’s Premier Cabin Lodging

Donna’s is known for its intimate wedding package, so it’s no surprise that these cabins inspire romance. The most romantic? The aptly named Romancing the Stone Cabin has a luxurious Jacuzzi room. The heart-shaped tub is located in an alcove where couples can enjoy nearby waterfalls cascading over large rocks and ferns. Then, cuddle in front of a huge stone-heart fireplace.  Plus, there are tons of romantic add-ons to make guests’ getaway special, including chocolate-covered strawberries, his and her bath robes, couples massages, and more.

Visit more than 600 species of animals – including brown bears – at the Columbus Zoo. Photo by Wilkins Morales on Unsplash

Visitors won’t be in the heart of Amish Country, OH, here, but Millersburg is just a 40-minute drive from Dansville, where the White Oak Inn is located. Plus, it’s great for couples that like going on adventures. Dansville is less than 90 minutes from Columbus, with attractions like the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens , Colombus Zoo and Aquarium , escape rooms, and upcoming events like Disney on Ice, professional hockey, or concerts at Nationwide Arena .

Sunset Ridge Log Cabins

Sunset Ridge is often called “the one with a view” because of its location high on the hillside and, of course, the view. Looking around the photo gallery, it’s clear that no matter the season, the view will be a part of the memory. There are three cabins at Sunset Ridge, each of them designed to sleep two and inspire romance. Each cabin has a propane fireplace, outdoor charcoal grill and fire pit, and a Jacuzzi on a covered back porch. What better way to enjoy the spectacular view than to take it in from the Jacuzzi, glass of wine in hand?

When lovebirds aren’t wrapped up in each other, they can enjoy local wine in the outdoor hot tub.

Sunset Ridge Cabins are also a great choice for couples who enjoy outdoor adventures, scenic drives, and beautiful surroundings. It’s a short drive to Honey Run Highlands Park and the Bridge of Dreams . Visitors can also spend a full day exploring Wolf Run Regional Park to the west or head north to Mohican State Park .

Tranquil Acres Cabins

Tranquil Acres has several private log cabins in the perfect place to kick off a romantic weekend. For couples that want to enjoy a hot tub, we recommend the Cozy Bear and Cozy Pine cabins. Plus, these cabins have a bedroom on the first floor for more room and a gas fireplace.

We also love the Sleepy Bear Cabin for older couples, especially those without a lot of mobility. There is a single step going into the cabin with a single-floor layout, a fireplace, and a 2-person Whirlpool tub, a standard feature in most Tranquil Acres Cabins.

Here, animal lovers will have a blast interacting with and feeding over 500 animals who call this farm home. Additionally, farm visitors can enjoy a wagon ride and experience what it is like working on the farm. Finally, finish the visit off on a high note at The Ohio Star Theatre, where family-friendly shows are always on the bill.

9 Best Places to Live in Ohio, According to Local Real Estate Experts

Here's what you need to know before moving to Ohio.

amish country ohio visit

aceshot/Getty Images

Ohio, with its vast river valleys, scenic rolling hills, lush state parks, UNESCO-listed sites, and top-notch entertainment, receives over 200 million visitors each year . But the Buckeye State has also emerged as an increasingly popular destination to call home, welcoming over 200,000 new out-of-state residents in 2022 , most relocating from Florida.

While everyone's reasons for putting down roots in a new place are different, several factors make Ohio a desirable place to live. The state's low cost of living, eight percent lower than the national average, and affordable housing — the median home price is $217,698 — are certainly a major draw both for young families looking for a place to settle down and retirees seeking a budget-friendly destination to spend their golden years.

And there are plenty of charming communities to consider — from peaceful small towns to bustling cities, these are the best places to live in Ohio.

Related: 11 Best Small Towns in Ohio

"One of the best things about Dayton is that despite its size, it still has a small-town feel — you'll be greeted with a smile and polite hello no matter where you go," Dayton-based president of Irongate Inc., Realtors Rhonda Chambal said of this city of over 137,000 residents. Dayton is home to one of the largest Air Force bases in the country, employing over 30,000 people. Healthcare, defense, and education are three of the city's most important industries, with an unemployment rate of four percent , just 0.1 percent higher than the national average.

Chambal explained that the relatively low cost of living (about six percent below the national average), proximity to larger cities (Cincinnati and Columbus are about an hour away), good-rated school districts, diverse dining options, and a rich cultural scene attract people to the area.

Another major draw? According to Zillow, the median home value in Dayton is around $143,000 , over $200,000 below the national average.

With 10 percent of Cincinnati covered in parks, the third-largest city in Ohio is also one of the nation's greenest. Sports fans here have three professional teams to support, but it is art enthusiasts who probably have it best. With over two dozen top-notch museums and at least 10 performance venues and theaters, the city is an art lover's paradise.

"While most of the state is very flat, Cincinnati is set among rolling, green hills overlooking the Ohio River, offering outdoor recreation year-round and a milder climate than our northern neighbors," Steve Early, a realtor at Sibcy Cline Realtors/Luxury Portfolio International , added. "From suburbs with large yards to urban living on the streetcar line with award-winning dining only steps away, this affordable city has never been more vibrant and diverse."

Because the city is rooted in history, newcomers can find all types of homes — from historic Victorian and craftsman houses to modern apartments and urban lofts. But best of all, home values here are well below the national average — currently around $235,00, according to Zillow .

Nestled on the shores of Lake Erie, Toledo is the perfect home base for those seeking scenic waterfront views, a laid-back lifestyle, and endless outdoor recreation. The city's bustling art scene includes the world-class Toledo Museum of Art. And sports fans will thrive here — Toledo has many sports venues and a Minor League Baseball team. But most importantly, the city blends low cost of living — almost 28 percent below the national average — and affordable housing. In fact, Toledo's real estate market was ranked best in the country in 2024. Currently, median home values stand at about $116,000, also attracting many retirees on a budget .

This beautiful northeast Ohio city recently outperformed 150 urban areas nationwide and ranked first in U.S. News & World Report's list of the most affordable places to retire . Thanks to its bustling arts scene, excellent healthcare facilities, proximity to larger cities, and affordable cost of living (18 percent lower than the national average), Youngstown is an excellent place to call home, whether you're a young professional or a senior.

"On the business spectrum, Youngstown is home to several companies, including the DeBartolo Corporation, Steelite International, and Gasser Chair. Youngstown has successfully changed the narrative from 'Rust' to 'Tech Belt,' leading the way in 3D printing and additive manufacturing, thanks to our nationally recognized business incubator ," Patrick Burgan, owner and broker at Burgan Real Estate , explained.

And even though home prices are on the rise, they are still much more affordable than in other areas of the country; the median home price in the Mahoning Valley is $178,000.

If access to world-class healthcare facilities is a priority, then Cleveland should be at the top of your list. The city is home to two of the largest multi-branch medical centers in the country, The Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, as well as several children's hospitals.

"Adding to Cleveland's appeal is that we're known for diversity and culture. University Circle is a hub for global arts, higher education, culture, and science," Janis McCormick, regional vice president of Ohio East at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services/Luxury Portfolio International , said, noting that the city's year-round cultural festivals, local craft brewery scene, and street fairs also add to its appeal with newcomers. The city is also ranked one of the best places to retire in the country , where monthly expenses don't exceed $1,700.

In terms of real estate, McCormick explained that the city offers a range of architectural styles.

"For instance, we have urban, country, and small-town settings. You can find a bungalow on the river just a short walk from the city center or a 10-acre ranch estate. We also have a lot of very neat midcentury modern homes built around the time of the Frank Lloyd era that are sprinkled throughout Cleveland," she added.

Median home values in Cleveland hover around the $100,000 mark , which makes the city one of the most affordable urban areas in the country.

To say that Columbus is booming right now would be an understatement. The city's population grew faster than any other metropolitan area in the U.S. in the second half of 2023, primarily thanks to its affordable cost of living and housing.

"It is a goldmine for anyone looking to move their career up a notch," Julie Wills, a real estate agent at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, said. "Here, you've got everything from big Fortune 500 companies to buzzing startups and a whole spectrum of industries, from tech to healthcare. Throw in top-notch schools and a vibe that's all about family, and you've got yourself more than just a place to visit."

10 percent of the city's population is aged 65 or over, which is good news for those who want to retire here, as the city also offers plenty of activities for seniors .

Home prices in Columbus have been on a steady upward trajectory for the past eight years, with no sign of slowing down. However, they are still affordable for first-time buyers. The median home price is around $240,000, and Wills explained that as values keep climbing, those who invest in property right now are looking at a "sweet return down the line."

Laser1987/Getty Images

Just like a few other places in Ohio, Akron was also recently spotlighted as a sought-after destination for retirees, but the city, which is also the birthplace of NBA superstar LeBron James, has a lot to offer families and young professionals. A beautiful parks system, excellent healthcare facilities, arts centers and museums, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, and a Minor League Baseball team are just some of the amenities and urban facilities that make Akron a wonderful place to live.

"Akron has grown so much over the years. Businesses are booming and people are excited to move here," Ann Kyner, vice president and regional manager at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services , said. "We have a little of everything here — from charming historic homes to colonial and ranch-style residences. Just outside our downtown area, there are communities with horses and stables. It doesn't take much of a drive beyond the city center before you find a more rural vibe, complete with equestrians riding the trails."

And while real estate prices have gone up over eight percent since last year, the median home value has remained under $130,000, according to Zillow .

Holly Hildreth/Getty Images

If bustling Columbus is not your cup of tea, consider this mid-size town of about 50,000 just 40 miles east of Ohio's capital. Newark is undergoing a major downtown restoration, making the town even more attractive to new residents. The city is a great place for families thanks to its many parks and green spaces (the 775-acre Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve is nearby), good schools, and affordable home prices — the current median house value is $217,000, up 10 percent since last year.

Raquel Lonas/Getty Images

Highlighted as the third-best emerging housing market in the country in a recent report by The Wall Street Journal and Realtor.com, Canton is an under-the-radar town an hour south of Cleveland. One of its most well-known landmarks is the Football Hall of Fame, but Canton is chock-full of galleries, museums, parks, and top-notch dining spots.

"Canton is very affordable and full of places for adventure and new experiences," Dominic Fonte, a real estate agent at Cutler Real Estate/Luxury Portfolio International , explained, noting that the town's neighborhoods offer a great variety of schools, amenities, and home styles such as ranches, apartments, and new construction residences.
