Austria - an Introduction

At the very heart of Austria tours you will find beautiful Viennese palaces and of course the stunning locations featured in smash hit film 'The Sound of Music' but aside from all this, you will find a country that is loved by many which is why so many people choose to take their holidays here.

Austria is literally brimming over with history and heritage from Vienna's   palaces to the sheer baroque splendour of Salzburg , the birthplace of Mozart. Those interested in culture should head to Austria's historic spa towns such as Bad Ischl . This is the stop off point for visitors wanting to see the region's stunning lakes.

Whilst enjoying coach holidays to Austria , visit the Krimml Falls , the highest waterfalls in Europe located in the Hohe Tauern National Park , Salzburg. For something a little more sedate, visit Hallstatt with its pastel-coloured houses, crystal clear waters and stunning mountainous backdrops vying for your attention.

Austria is such a beautiful country with plenty to see and explore that it can sometimes be overwhelming as to what to visit first. Hopefully this will help:

Vienna The historical capital city of Austria is home to a wealth of over 150 beautiful palaces and more than 27 castles and numerous fascinating museums. Visit one of the many coffee houses, try the delicious local delicacies and marvel at the out of this world architecture. This city of music offers a variety of concerts from the more traditional Beethoven to the modern Electronic sounds. Home to the Spanish Riding School, appreciate the skills of both the horses and riders in one of their gala performances.

Salzburg The famous Austrian city of Salzburg, with its backdrop of mountain scenery, is known not only for its beauty but also for being the home of Mozart. In the historical centre, you will find the birthplace of this famous composer, which has since been turned into a fascinating museum. Some main attractions in this wonderful city include: Salzburg Cathedral, the Hohensalzburg fortress and Mirabel Gardens.

The Tyrol This area of Austria is one of the main tourist destinations to visit and offers you everything you'd expect from a visit to this scenic country – lakes, mountains and chocolate box villages! The city of Innsbruck, home to the Golden Roof, is the main city to visit with various museums and other attractions. You are spoilt for choice for places to visit in The Tyrol with the natural Krimml Waterfalls, the glistening Swarovski crystal world or a journey on the infamous Zillertal Railway.

To help you have an enjoyable holiday in Austria, take a look at these useful tips and advice provided by the  Foreign and Commonwealth Office  (FCO):

Health and Travel Insurance You should apply for a free UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) before leaving the UK when you are visiting Austria. Please note this card is not a substitute for travel insurance or medical cover, however, you will be entitled to state provided medical treatment at a reduced cost or sometimes for free if this is required during your stay in Austria.

Should you require  emergency medical assistance during your visit, dial 112 and ask for an ambulance. In the event you are referred to a medical facility for treatment, you must contact your insurance company or your medical assistance provider immediately.

Local Laws and Customs It is a requirement of Austrian Law that you have your passport with you at all times and that the UK driving licence is not an acceptable form of identification.

Entry Requirements

Passport validity If you are planning to visit Austria, you must meet the following passport requirements.

Your passport must be: - Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’) - Valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

Please note: If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. These extra months do not count towards your passport validity.

Visas You can travel to Austria for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. Please note that any previous visits you have made to the Schengen countries within the last 180 days will count towards your 90-day limit.

Passport stamping Your passport will be stamped if you enter or exit the Schengen area through Austria as a visitor. These passport stamps are used to check you’re complying with the 90-day visa-free limit in the Schengen area.

Any other nationality looking to holiday in Austria must contact the local embassy to check visa requirements.

Ride a bike around Wörthersee

Cycle around the scenic (and tranquil) 40 km circuit of the Austrian Monte Carlo - Lake Wörther. It might not be the biggest, but it’s certainly one of the prettiest lakes.

Get Classical at Schönbrunn Palace

1400 rooms. An entire zoo. Sprawling gardens. There’s a lot to see at this palace. But nothing beats tuning into a classical music concert featuring the works of Mozart and Strauss inside the palace halls. Truly unmissable.

Explore the world’s largest ice cave in Eisriesenwelt

This labyrinth of bizarre ice formations has been taking visitors’ breath away since 1879. You'll need to wrap up warm though - even at the height of summer, it gets chilly.

Take the Sound of Music Tour

Fall for the scenic mountains of Salzburg, where The Sound of Music was filmed. Grab your camera and prepare to reenact your favourite scenes.

Visit the Hohensalzburg Castle

You’ll be SO glad that you made the trek up here. The green patches intertwined with the intriguing architecture of the city (from one of Europe’s largest and best-preserved mediaeval castles) makes everything worth it.

Hit the slopes in Hopfgarten

Nothing like gliding down the swooping snow-capped peaks of this charming little ski village on your Austria trip. How you choose to hit the slopes here is entirely up to you. Hiking, skiing, gondola riding - you’re guaranteed to get a showstopping view.

Go paragliding

Is there a better view of the Alps than from above? Probably not. Buckle up for a paragliding adventure with an experienced guide - and be prepared to see the BEST view of your entire Austria tour.

Take a day trip to Salzburg

Watch the golden street lights glitter over this serene blue & white city. Get a taste of the traditional Zwickelbier. Visit the magnificent castle. Or admire Picasso’s work at the National History Museum.

Go on a locally guided bike tour

Explore the nooks and crannies of Austria on a bike (with a local guide!) You’ll cycle through meadows, sip on fresh Alpine waters and finish off with a BBQ lunch of Austrian wurst & kraut salad.

Highlights of our Austria tours

Nickelsdorf

Known for it's all-star lineup, Nova Rock is a powerhouse amongst music festivals in Austria, with rock and heavy metal firmly on the agenda. Previous headliners include giants like The Prodigy, Kiss and Metallica, though we're betting it was David Hasselhoff's set that really kicked off.

World Bodypainting Festival

This weeklong festival on the shores of lake Wörther transforms the idyllic town of Pörtschach into a buzzing, colourful playground for creativity. Take a body painting class, dance in the sunshine to the many DJs and soak in the beautifully funky world of body art.

Salzburger Festspiele

Established in 1919 as a celebration of Mozart’s enduring legacy, the Salzburger Festspiele has expanded over the decades into an internationally renowned festival of opera and drama.

Snowbombing

Snowbombing is one of the greatest ski resort festivals held every year at the Austrian ski resort Mayrhofen. Get ready for igloo raves, slope-side stages and ski dancing to the tunes of dozens of great musicians that touch down in Austria every spring.

Electric Love Festival

Ever since 2013 this electronic dance music festival has been held annually on the second weekend in July at the Salzburg Ring in Plainfeld. Attracting over 100,000 attendees from all around the globe and bringing you the best of Dubstep, Electro, Hardstyle or Drum and Bass, this festival is truly a remarkable experience that you would love to share with your friends!

Top 5 festivals in Austria

Austria is a country that likes to party, with festival scene that is alive and kicking. This is our top 5 pick of the country's best.

Belvedere Museum

This museum is every art-lover’s paradise. Mediaeval art, Baroque art, impressionism, contemporary & mediaeval art and the world's largest collection of works by Gustav Klimt - all housed in a complex of magnificent Baroque palaces.

Leopold Museum

The Leopold Museum is located in Vienna's beautiful MuseumsQuartier, and houses one of the world's largest collections of Austrian modern art. Highlights are its huge Egon Schiele Collection as well as works by the likes of Oskar Kokoschka and Gustav Klimt.

Natural History Museum

This strikingly modern building houses a spectacular collection of modern art, from such masters as Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee and Andy Warhol. It's located in the MuseumsQuartier, meaning easy access to other major Vienna museums.

One of the undisputed Kings of the Art Nouveau movement, no trip to Barcelona is complete without visiting the Gaudi Museum. Located in Park Güell, the museum was Gaudi’s residence for almost 20 years and displays many examples of furniture and other objects he designed.

Old Viennese Schnapps Museum

This distillery still produces the original recipe of schnapps from 1875! Take a tour of the factory for insights about the distillery business (and sample some schnapps too). Make sure to book your tickets in advance!

Top 5 museums and galleries in Austria

With over 100 museums in Vienna alone, planning the cultural side of your Austria travel itinerary can be daunting. Luckily, we’ve done the heavy lifting for you and picked the best Austrian culture vulture experiences. And amazingly, none of them involve Mozart.

Käsekrainer

No night out in Austria is complete without a visit to the sausage stand, and the käsekrainer is the must-try street food item. It's a sausage containing chunks of cheese that melt as the sausage is cooked, and is served either in a bun or cut into chunks on a plate, with the mustard of your choice. Just don't let its other name 'eitriger' ('puss-sausage') put you off.

Best eaten at Würstelstand, Schwarzenbergpl 15, 1010 Vienna

You may have had boiled beef, but never quite like this. Tafelspitz is a well-loved Austrian traditional food, and the secret is in the broth - add root vegetables and spices then simmer slowly until perfection, before serving with roast potatoes, horseradish and apple sauce. Job done!

Best eaten at Zum fidelen Affen, Priesterhausgasse 8, 5020 Salzburg

Wiener Schnitzel

Not without good reason is the Wiener Schnitzel the most famous Austrian food. Essentially a very thinly hammered veal steak, it's breaded then deep-fried in butter until tantalisingly crisp and golden brown. Served with potato salad and a good squeeze of lemon, it could be one of the culinary highlights of your Austria travel.

Best eaten at Gasthaus Lendplatzl, Lendplatz 11, Graz 8020

Food in Austria

Love meat, cheese & bread? And a good ol’ pint of beer? This is your place. It's a mystery why Austrian cuisine isn't on the podium rubbing shoulders with its French and Italian counterparts. But don’t worry, we've compiled a list of Austrian must-try classics.

This Contiki was incredible, definitely a great experience and I made so many friends and loved getting to ski with them everyday! Sasha Philips, Mini Ski Austria

Great staff! Very helpful and friendly. Amazing hostel, felt like I was in a hotel. Great common room. Kayla Corles, Austria Ski Only - 2 weeks

Had a blast! Alex was an awesome trip manager and made our time in the Alps a lot of fun! Customer Experience, Active Alps
