R1150RT Electronic Cruise Control Options

I have a 1996 R1100RT and want to add the Murph's cruise control kit. I have previously installed this kit on my K100RT and they are nice. I've only been able to find one good article on how to install this on the RT1100RT, article by LaChuparosa. It is a really good article but would sure like any more input on any other ideas on how to connect this to the throttle bodies. Also, any feedback from others that have this unit on the R1100RT. Thanks, jim

Installing Rostra Electronic Cruise Control on 1150RT, best servo location?

  • Add to quote

Question for those who installed this cruise control on the R1150RT. Where did you install the servo unit? I have this install document: http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/rt-series/52363-electronic-cruise-control-r1150rt.html Which recommends installing it in the front, between the shock and the forks, with the cable pointed down. Does this work well? The Rostra instructions say to not install it pointed down, but I cannot find a better location. Thanks Rod

If no one responds with a direct response re: installation on an 1150RT I would suggest you check out fjrforum.com where these cruise controls are quite popular and have been put in various locations on the FJR1300 which you might be able to adapt to your 1150RT - under seat, rear fender, tank. I put the older Audiovox 100CC on my '07 FJR with much help from the info on that forum. Mike

You can also check the Chromeheads forum at Chromeheads.org . If I remember correctly a member (Pencin) installed a Rostra CC on a R1200C that is basically the same engine with the same Motronics. Good luck!

You would be better off asking these questions at the www.BMWRT.COM website, where it's inhabited by mainly RT riders. When I had an RT, I looked into this and from what I'd read and heard, the cruise in your first link works quite well. I also believe the cruise in your second link is exactly the same unit as the one found in the your first link, but distributed in the UK. I briefly considered getting the R1200RT just to get the electronic cruise control on it. But then opted for the GS.

That is right, there are several archive discussions of this unit on the BMW Sport Touring site. One that I recall was fairly negative, perhaps because of the separate throttle bodies on the RT. Good luck.

no experence with either model. after surfing over the links, imho the prices seem to be really high for a car adapeted cruise control unit for motorcycle. i was toying with the idea of adding an "audio-vox" to my own klr650. the trouble as i see it is that they all seem to require the use of vacume opperated throttle servo and a vacume reservoir. both are a bit bulky (we all know motorcycles have oodles of room for this kinda stuff). so you'll spend some time trying to fit all the componets to get a good , low profile installation. something i don't mind doing but if you want something that's more installer friendly, i think an electric opperated servo would be a lot easyer to install. they're a lot smaller that the vacume opperaterd counter part and the battery is you're power reservoir. in the end i decided that i wouldn't bother with the klr, but put my energy into my next bike.

If you have some electrical/mechanical ability try the Rostra unit. Servo operated, not vacuum. You have to do all the interface work yourself, like throttle brackets, which leads to tap into, etc. charlie

Justbobinkentucky

Justbobinkentucky Been here awhile

I have installed 7 cruise control units on various motorcycles. Some Audiovox and some Rostra units, I prefer the Rostra. All that I have installed did have a single throttle pull so the BMW with its split mounted throttle bodies will require a 1 in to 2 cable conversion that should be doable for someone with that expertise. The last Rostra kit I bought was about $240 and included everything needed except for a relay that can be purchased locally for less than 5 bucks. The japanese bikes have a pulse rate that is compatible with the Rostra so that it can get its input from the VSS, the vehicle speed sensor. The Rostra unit can also be setup to use a magnet sensor attached to a driveshaft or rotor if the VSS pulse rate is not compatible. My installs generally take 10 to 12 hrs so it is a good rainy weekend project.
Aircraft spruce sells two cable splitters, reasonable price as well. Can split up to three cables. The only thing to know is the cable travel length you are working with.

I really thought these would have been popular but based on the lack of replies so far looks like I was wrong.

I think most people make do with a throttle lock. The cruise controls look too complicated, too expensive and too much extra stuff on the handlebar. I am sure that others will disagree, but that's my feeling on the matter.

Cruise control: my right hand. It's worked for about a million miles.

Backup cruise control: my Throttlemeister

Blue Beemer Dude

Blue Beemer Dude

I looked into one of these systems way back when, and the concensus then was that BMW never fitted a system due to the dual throttle bodies on the RT and issues with same. I can't remember which system I looked at, but it was similiar to the RTCruise offering, and I didn't care for the price nor the way it looked (to me) like a cobbled-up automotive solution.

I was hoping that a better solution would come along, but it doesn't look like it.

I know they are popular with the ST1300 crowd. If you do a search at www.st-owners.com , you'll find tons of info.

What is so scary?

Thanks, I was looking forward to some replies to your post!

Chuck us yer email and I'll send the same thing. (Preliminary (incomlete) install manual for the R1150RT MCCruise unit)

By scary I mean it is a lot more complex than I first thought and also requires permanent modification to the bike by cutting and re crimping throttle cables. Means that any future throttle cable replacement also needs to be cut and crimped at a new length.

I am still very keen to proceed though. Just need to build up my confidence on what to me is a complicated DIY procedure.

madness522

Here is a cruise control being fitted on a K1100LT for about $100. I have thought about installing this on my RT but haven't yet. Might be another alternative for your consideration.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well yesterday Uggles and I took a ride down to MCCruise and caught up with Tony & Frank who showed us through their workshop. Must admit I was pretty impressed with the setup and the amount of work they have put into their product. This is a 100% fully designed for use on bikes (and quads) cruise unit, not a modified car kit like I thought at first.

Everything has been designed by them to the smallest details like the illuminated push button controls and even down to the circuit board designs and the impressive surface mount technology they contain.

Bottom line is we both bought kits for our RT's and now have the documentation to read in detail and digest before starting to pull the bikes to bits and do the installation.

A bit of a heads up though, this is not a 2 minute job! I think after all the plastic is off the bike it will still take a first timer at least a day to do but more on that when I get around to doing it.

Must admit it is a little bit scary as it is a tad complex but having seen the quality of the componets and the invitation from Frank & Tony to call if we have any issues it should go OK.

In closing the loop I have now fitted the MCCruise unit to my R1150RT (Thanks for the help Uggles).

Only had a few rides with it so far and still getting used to it but so far very happy and well worth the time, effort and expense.

A not so obvious but nice feature is the fact the buttons are backlit. The text is illuminated and without being over bright they do help illuminate the other controls on the left grip as well.

The red button on the grip is my PTT and not related to the cruise.
