Drake Adds Final Big As the What? Shows With Co-Headliner Lil Wayne

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Drake has enlisted Lil Wayne to help him close out the Big As the What? Tour in the coming weeks, including two newly added shows in Newark, New Jersey.

While the trek was billed as a Drake/J. Cole co-headlining run, it appears J. Cole will not be able to make some of the final concerts on the itinerary. So, Lil Wayne will take the stage instead for a run of gigs starting March 23 and 24 at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida.

Wayne will also perform with Drake at the UBS Arena in Belmont Park, New York on March 28 and 29; and the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, Pennsylvania on March 31. The tour will close out with two newly-announced shows, April 4 and 5, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. (Lil Durk, who’s been providing support for most of the tour, will perform at all the aforementioned stops, except the two shows at UBS Arena.)

After a delay late last year , Drake and J. Cole kicked off the the Big As the What? tour in February. While J. Cole hasn’t dropped an album since 2021’s The Off Season , Drake was touring in support of his most recent effort, For All the Dogs , which arrived last October.

In the midst of the tour, however, Drake has garnered some arguably dubious attention as he’s stood by Tory Lanez in his attempt to appeal his sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot. Drake recently shared a photo of Lanez with the caption “3 you,” which is slang for “free you” (the number “3” symbolizes open handcuffs). Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison last August after being found guilty of shooting Meg during a 2020 altercation.

Drake and Lil Wayne launched their Drake Vs. Lil Wayne tour in Darien, New York, to set a new precedent for co-headlining treks.

The two Young Money artists – the protege and the sage, as the trailer says – didn’t completely rely on a setlist. Instead, they had fans who downloaded the Lil Wayne Vs. Drake tour app vote on who would perform first. From there, Lil Wayne and Drake took turns performing snippets of their respective hits – and exchanging disses in efforts to “win” the Street Fighter -inspired night. (Yes, the tour is sponsored by Capcom.)

After Drake performed his part from DJ Khaled‘s “No New Friends,” his label boss joined him on stage. “I kinda remember that, but, uh, you probably was still in the wheelchair when I was making hits,” he said, a brutal way to shout out Drake’s Degrassi role and introduce his verse in “Duffle Bag Boy” by Playaz Circle, the rap duo featuring 2 Chainz (when he was still known as Tity Boi). Thanks to moves like that, Lil Wayne won the tour’s opening night.

Lil Wayne: Tour With Drake Will Be a ‘Battle’

As if we needed more convincing that the upcoming “Drake vs. Lil Wayne” tour will be a must-see, during a recent interview Lil Wayne revealed the two rap superstars will actually be battling on stage.

“Since, thank God, we’ve been so successful, [we’ll just be] going back and forth with our hits and getting the crowd to go crazy, then just finally hit the stage together,” Wayne told MTV News. “It’s a battle-type thing.”

As for who he thinks will win the back-and-forth competition for crowd participation, Wayne said, “I give the good guy the edge.”

The trek will kick off Aug. 8 in Buffalo, New York, then move on to cities such as Miami, Denver, Atlanta and Los Angeles before wrapping up in Woodlands, Texas, in late September. There are plans to extend the 31-city tour if ticket sales are impressive enough.

Drake recently backed out of a few UK concert dates after falling ill, but he promised fans a quick recovery. Meanwhile Wayne has been busy in the studio working on his next album, Tha Carter V , and a second LP called  Da Other Album. He made no mention of his earlier reported intention to retire from his solo career after this year. In fact, during a recent “Weezy Wednesdays” session, he alluded to having a busy 2015 as well, saying, “Honestly, the reason why it became two albums is because I went to work on Tha Carter V and I don’t stop working. So, it’s either Carter V would be 93 songs or we’re gonna have to figure this out. So what we said was, ‘All right, we’re going to drop two albums this year, and then we’re going to probably end up dropping like seven next year.”

Drake vs. Lil Wayne: An Absurdly Detailed Investigation

drake vs lil wayne tour

Drake and Lil Wayne are currently on their aptly-named Drake vs. Lil Wayne Tour, and while the general hip-hop populace might not view the tour as a historical moment (because, you know, this and this and this and this ), it is kind of a big deal. We’re talking about well over 20 number one songs hitting the stage every night, many of them with each other.

So now that the planets have aligned and we’ve got the perfect chance to cross “absurdly detailed comparison of Drake and Lil Wayne” off our bucket list, we’re going to seize the day. Carpe diem and what not. But enough chatter, let’s get to the important stuff, like who would win in a fight.

Let me turn things over to Lucas for the specifics…

Real Name: Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr. vs. Aubrey Graham

Considering hip-hop has a long line of famous Carters, we gotta give this to Lil Wayne. Also, Aubrey Graham sounds like the name of a counselor at a YMCA summer camp.

Point : Weezy

Breakthrough Appearance: “Go DJ” vs. “Best I Ever Had”

Look, for a pretty bubblegummy (dare I say it) lame song, “Best I Ever Had” had a great run. In many ways, it still serves as a blueprint for Drake’s sound. Still, it doesn’t hold a candle to “Go DJ.” It may have sold more, but you will never convince any self-respecting hip-hop fan that “Best I Ever Had” is better. Want to talk about shelf life? “Go DJ” still gives me goosebumps like I’m hearing it for the first time in high school and Drake’s was  rocking a mic from his wheelchair .

Mixtapes: Wayne’s (Approximately) 9 Billion Mixtapes vs. Room for Improvement  &  So Far Gone

Lil Wayne is the mixtape king (sorry, Chamillionaire). Not only was he a driving force behind the mixtape era, but some of Lil Wayne’s best work came on those free projects, and there was a time when he would take the most popular songs on the planet and just obliterate it with a remix . Drake had Room for Improvement  and  So Far Gone , which was good and would later become an album, but there’s no way he can match up with Wayne here.

Album Discography

Here’s where things get interesting. There are a few things to consider here. First, Weezy has more albums (11 to Drake’s three, four if you count So Far Gone ), but he has also just been in the game longer. Wayne dropped his first album eleven years before Drake’s debut arrived. If you are going by volume, Wayne has Drake beat—not to mention Tha Carter series—but if you level the playing field, I actually think Drake bests Wayne.

Hear me out. With 2.6 million copies sold, Drake’s sophomore album, Take Care , is his best selling to date. It took Lil Wayne five albums to outsell Take Care ( Tha Carter III sold 3.6). Aside from Tha Carter III , none of Weezy’s ten other albums have outsold Drake’s second major effort. Plus, Drake got there in just two albums, as opposed to Lil Wayne who took five and a shit ton of mixtapes to break the two milli mark. Then you factor in the success of Nothing Was The Same and Thank Me Later , each selling 1.5 million in the U.S. and I think you have to give the edge to Drake. Especially, considering that Drake came up in an era when album sales were in severe decline, even though he has less than half the albums, he’s got Wayne numbers. And I think you can argue that Drake’s album output has been far more consistent quality.

Point : Drizzy

Guest Verses

It sounds crazy, but I think the edge goes to Drake. Lil Wayne still bodied about a billion rappers on their own beat, but they weren’t so much guest verses as mixtape remixes, so we can’t officially count them as your standard guest verse. Still, he has contributed to Kanye records, JAY-Z records, shit even a record on a Biggie album. Drake, however, not only does plenty of guest spots with the bigger names (Kendrick, The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, Rozay, etc), but he will make an artist a star overnight with a single guest verse (a la Migos) or co-sign ( see The Weeknd). A Drake guest verse all but ensures said single will be a hit. Plus, can’t we say Drake’s done more dope guest verses for Wayne than vice-versa?

Nathan S. Update : I gotta disagree with Lucas here. Yes, right now there’s probably no other rapper you’d rather have on your song if you’re looking for a hit than Drake, a guest verse from him is far more valuable than one from Wayne. But taking the long view, there was a time when Wayne was killing guest verses so bad he made Kanye say, “ You ain’t fittin to murder me like everybody else .” When Drake’s so good even Kanye’s forced to say it on record, then we’ll talk.

Awards: Lil Wayne (19 GRAMMY nominations, 4 wins) vs. Drake (18 GRAMMY nominations, 1 win)

Look. Obviously the Grammy’s aren’t the most reliable barometer of quality. Still, if you ask any artist if they would want to win a Grammy, 100 out of 100 would say “Yes.” It’s still a mark that you’re undoubtedly doing something right. You don’t just get there by accident. While they have almost the same amount of nominations, Weezy has more wins. It’s simple math.

Endorsements: Weezy (Trukfit, Mountain Dew, Christiano Ronaldo) vs. Drake (Sprite, Jordan, Kodak)

Considering I’m not a fifteen-year-old skater and Mountain Dew Dropped him, I’d say Drake has Wayne beat here. Shit, a Jordan/Nike deal alone trumps Weezy’s bunch.

TV Appearances: Lil Wayne (SportsCenter/First Take, The Boondocks) vs. Drake (ESPYS, Anchorman 2, SNL, Ice Age)

Lil Wayne’s claim to fame is arguing with Skip Bayless. Drake hosted the ESPYS. Also, the only way Lil Wayne could get into an SNL skit is when Drake played him. Drake has a bright future ahead of him both on TV and the silver screen, so this one’s a cakewalk for Camp Aubrey. (Related note, how isn’t Drake in more movies?)

Trademark Accessory: Lil Wayne’s Hair vs. Drake’s OVO Chain

Could have been Drake’s wheelchair too, or maybe his diamond teat-drop ski mask, but his OVO chain is definitely his go-to accessory. I mean, he even stated, “I wear every single chain, even when I’m in the house.” On the other hand, Wayne’s dreads are almost their own entity. He should have them insured, and he just might. Lot’s of rappers have ’em, but Wayne’s are definitely the most famous, and it’s almost impossible to picture him without them.

Point : Weezy

Has Kissed Birdman?

Point : Weezy  (Or is that point Drizzy? We’ll call it a draw.)

Wayne has four known kids, at least, but think of all the rappers Drake has fathered . More than half the time I hear a Kirko Bangz song drop, I first think that it’s a Drake cut… until I realize it’s not nearly as good. Plus, he has guys like Migos, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and OB O’Brien and more all calling him daddy.

Tattoos: Lil Wayne’s million tattoos vs Drake’s OVO Owl

Drake has like three total, surprised he didn’t hide them from his mom so he wouldn’t get grounded, and one of them is that kind of creepy portrait of Aaliyah. Weezy’s may not all be the best quality, but he has too many to count, and you have to admire the man’s commitment. Go hard or go home.

Now here’s where things get really tough. On one hand, Lil Wayne’s got a full-on wife who’s pretty hot, he impregnated Lauren London, he (allegedly) fucked Chris Bosh’s wife and there have to be about 40,000 other women who have done things with Weezy that can’t be put into print. By contrast, Drake’s managed to pull Rihanna (aka the female Drake of her generation), Kyra Chaos  and Maliah Michel , among many others.

Do we give Wayne bonus points for actually impregnating one of the most attractive women alive? Or should we dock him points and award them to Drake for (apparently) being smarter about wrapping things up? Is it quantity here, or quality?

Point : Weezy ( barely )

Worst Song: Lil Wayne “Good Time” vs. Drake (None?)

I’m not saying Drake doesn’t have any bad songs, but even when it’s less than good it does not fill your ears with fire ants bad. I’m legitimately stumped trying to think of a Drake record that’s outright terrible. Wayne, however, has two rock albums and a song with Paris Hilton.

Point : Weezy….or actually Drizzy

Who Would Win in a Fight?

Now, Drake gets the rep that he’s softer than Jhené Aiko’s skin, but the fact is that he’s a 27-year-old who probably works out more than you and me combined. Wayne is 30, stands at only 5’6″, plus he’s had multiple strokes. Wayne might be hard to handle, he’d come at you like a spider monkey , but ultimately I think Aubrey’s coming out of the octagon the victor.

Final Verdict

According to our completely random scoring system and categories that we made up as we thought of them, Lil Wayne’s eight points barely edged out Drake’s seven, which means absolutely nothing but we’re going to take very seriously. So,  congratulations Lil Wayne !!! We’re sure this is a huge moment in your career, don’t let the honor go to your head.

It’s official! Drake has added Lil Wayne as a co-headliner to his It’s All A Blur: Big As The What? Tour.  The announcement came in on Tuesday (March 5) as Wayne will join Drizzy on the road for the end of his four-month-long trek. In addition to grabbing Lil Wayne as a co-headliner, Drake added two more shows for April 4 and April 5 at Newark, NJ, Prudential Center.

https://www.instagram.com/p/C4JNgQuA1E0/?img_index=1

At the beginning of the tour, the Toronto rapper cast J. Cole as his right-hand man, but he would not be returning for several of the March shows. Last month, Drake added Lil Durk to carry out the missed performances by the North Carolina rapper, who will also carry out his duties until the end of the tour.

Lil Wayne will begin his co-headlining set with Drizzy and Durkio on March 23 at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, FL. Cole’s last show will be on March 19 at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, OK.

Lil Wayne and Drake’s History

Weezy discovered Drake back in 2008 and signed him to his label Young Money Entertainment the following year. The duo have been on several songs together over the years, including “She Will,” “Right Above It,” “HYFR,” and more.

During Drake’s October World Weekend in 2022, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj (who Weezy also discovered) joined the Toronto rapper on stage. He then took the time after the trio’s performance to publicly thank the NOLA native for the impact he’s had on his career. “You’re the most important man to each and every one us,” the Honestly, Nevermind rapper told Weezy , “You are truly the most selfless man on planet earth.”

Lil Wayne’s Latest Music Release

Welcome 2 Collegrove , a joint album between Weezy and 2Chainz, was released in November. The 21-track LP contains guest features from Usher (“Transparency”), 21 Savage (“Big Diamonds”), Fabolous (“PPA”), Rick Ross (“Can’t Believe You”), Benny the Butcher (“Oprah and Gayle”), Vory (“Godzilla”), and Marsha Ambrosius on the last track “Moonlight.” The project debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard 200.

“Toosie Slide” was Drake’s attempt at creating a viral dance amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The song has easy dance movements that he raps throughout the song: “Right foot up, left foot slide/Left foot up, right foot slide.” “Tootsie Slide” was a chart-topper for one week.

13. "What's Next" by Drake (2021)

Drake gave us Scary Hours 2 to hold us over before he decided to release Certified Lover Boy in 2021. On “What’s Next” the rapper is propelling forward on and anticipating what’s next. “What’s Next” stayed at No. 1 for one week.

12. "Slime You Out" Drake feat. SZA (2023)

We finally got a collab between Drake and SZA after all this time. The song is the lead single to Drake’s For All The Dogs which is his eighth studio album. In the song, Drake speaks on the childish ways of a woman he’s seeing after she tries to replace him with someone new. “Slime You Out” was No. 1 for one week.

11. "Way 2 Sexy" by Drake feat. Future & Young Thug (2021)

Drake called trap kings Future and Young Thug for “Way 2 Sexy.” The song is on Drake’s Certified Lover Boy , which dropped in 2021. “Way 2 Sexy” samples Right Said Fred’s 1992 hit “I’m Too Sexy.” The rappers boast about their good looks in the song and the music video shows off the rapper’s comical side. Future scored his first No. 1 with the record, and it was Young Thug’s third leader. “Way 2 Sexy” was a chart leader for one week.

10. "First Person Shooter" by Drake feat. J. Cole (2023)

“They act like two legends cannot coexist,” Cole raps on “Middle Child.” Here, they prove they can coexist on “First Person Shooter.” The North Carolina rapper takes over a majority of the rapping on the track, but Drake matches Coles’ energy from the jump. The pair make a great duo and this marks their third collaboration. “First Person Shooter” was the 13th– accounted for — No. 1 hit of the Toronto rapper which matched Michael Jackson. This was also Cole’s first career chart leader. The record stayed atop the chart for one week.

9. "Jimmy Cooks" by Drake feat. 21 Savage (2022)

Most fans found Honestly, Nevermind as a letdown as they expected the surprise drop to be rap-heavy. The album was more experimental as the Toronto rapper sang and rapped on house music beats. “Jimmy Cooks” was the saving grace for many on the project as it brought back “Drake the rapper.” The record is also the only one on the album that has a feature which Drake graciously gave to 21 Savage. “Jimmy Cooks” stayed No. 1 for one week.

8. "SICKO MODE" Travis Scott ft. Drake** (2019)

While “SICKO MODE” doesn’t count towards Drake’s career No. 1’s, it still is a phenomenal track. Billboard explained that SICKO MODE didn’t count because Drake was not “properly credited” on the song. The record is found on Scott’s 2021 album Astroworld . It was nominated for “Best Rap Song,” and “Best Rap Performance.” “SICKO MODE” was Scott’s first No. 1 song.

7. "In My Feelings" by Drake (2016)

In 2016, Drake had everyone in their feelings. You could not go around without someone singing,”Kiki, do you love me?” over the infectious beat created by Cleveland producer TrapMoneyBenny, New Orleans producer BlaqNmilD, and Drizzy’s longtime producer 40. “In My Feelings” stayed at No. 1 on the chart for ten weeks.

6. "Nice for What" by Drake (2018)

“Nice For What” is found on Drake’s Scorpion and was the album’s second promotional single. Unlike most of the songs on this list, “Nice For What” is sample heavy but still Drake makes it his own. The song samples Lauryn Hill’s song “Ex-Factor” (1998) which itself samples Wu-Tang Clan’s “Can It Be All So Simple” (1993), “Drag Rap” by the Showboys (1986), “Get Your Roll On” by Big Tymers (2000). You can also hear Big Freida on the track. “Nice For What” was nominated for Best Rap Performance at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. It stayed for eight weeks at No. 1 on the chart.

5. "What's My Name?" by Rihanna feat. Drake (2011)

While the duo didn’t work out romantically, Rihanna and Drake definitely know how to make a hit together. “What’s My Name?” is from Rihanna’s album Forever which was released in 2011. In the song, the two sing/rap about their love interests, and in the music video they are each other’s. The song was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards. It stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for one week. “What’s My Name?” is also Drake’s first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

4. "Wait for U" by Future feat. Drake & Tems (2022)

The song uses a sample of Tems’ “Higher” but Future gave the Nigerian songstress a feature credit to highlight her contribution to the song. The song won Best Melodic Rap Performance at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards. It was also nominated for Best Rap Song. “Wait For U” stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for one week.

3. "God's Plan" by Drake (2018)

“God’s Plan” is about Drake giving back but also recognizing that not everyone has good intentions. The song plays into Drake’s doubts about people who try to get close to him in order to benefit off of his success. As for the charitable efforts he displays in the music video, the Toronto rapper also replicated the act in real life. According to Genius , the music video’s budget was $996,631.90, and they took that money and donated to schools and several charities. “God’s Plan” won Best Rap Song at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards and was nominated for Song Of The Year and Record Of The Year. The song stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 11 weeks.

2. "Work" by Rihanna feat. Drake (2016)

Drake and Rihanna owned 2016’s summer with “Work.” In the song, Rihanna sings about wanting a relationship and Drake is only interested in a “friends-with-benefits” package. The two also had a memorable steamy performance at the 2016 BRIT Awards. It was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Record Of The Year. The song stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for nine weeks.

1. "One Dance" by Drake feat. Wizkid & Kyla (2016)

As we previously mentioned, 2016 was one of Drake’s most popular years. He was tapped into his afrobeats and dancehall vibe with “One Dance” where he grabbed Wizkid and Kyla for the assist. “One Dance” was Drake’s first No. 1 single on the Billboard charts. The song stayed atop the chart for 10 weeks.

Duelists Armed With Banter and Mutual Admiration

drake vs lil wayne tour

HOLMDEL, N.J. — In hip-hop tours this summer, two has trumped one. There was the juggernaut teaming of Jay Z and Beyoncé, who have love (or maybe not, a tension they slyly played with) and oodles of collaborations between them. After that came the grand-scale mash-up of Eminem and Rihanna, who share some hits and, it turns out, not much else.

From a distance, the “Drake vs. Lil Wayne” tour, which came to the PNC Bank Arts Center here on Tuesday night, was the smallest of the three. The others played stadiums; this one mostly outdoor amphitheaters. And though both Drake and Lil Wayne are true superstars, they are not quite the longstanding pop fixtures the others are. And maybe they couldn’t match the sheer spectacle of Beyoncé — though to be fair, it is hard to beat the pure radiance of the sun.

But in all other ways, this matchup of friends, label colleagues and frequent collaborators was the true success of the summer duos.

The night was framed as a face-off, from the “vs.” in the tour name to the Street Fighter-theme stage graphics, tour app and merchandise. For much of the show, the two alternated brief sets before sharing the stage and trading song for song, and then, at the end of the night, performing together.

In total, Lil Wayne’s show was an advertisement for hip-hop as it has been — rough-edge, rowdy, often lyrically dexterous; Drake’s a billboard for its forward-looking promise, emphasizing song craft and melody, and expanding the genre’s emotional palette.

As in most great partnerships, each brings something the other doesn’t have and is then resented for it. Most of their banter consisted of sending each other up. After Drake flew above the audience singing love songs while gripping a pole, Lil Wayne deadpanned, “Ain’t nobody throw no 1’s at Drake when he was on that pole.” When they were trading off guest appearances, Drake chastised one of Lil Wayne’s choices: “I wasn’t talking about getting on a song after it’s already a hit. I was talking about making a song a hit.” Drake also took care to remind Lil Wayne of the time, on “Money to Blow,” when he rapped, “We gon’ be alright if we put Drake on every hook.”

Sometimes, they sent up themselves, too: “I’m really him,” Drake said, emphasizing his own tenderness. “I got mink walls in my dressing room. I washed my face with Fiji before I came out here.”

In the repartee portion of the evening, Drake had one sort of advantage: He is a seasoned performer in many media, and recently added hosting to that list, with a standout turn at the ESPYs. (Perhaps he watched Seth Meyers’s board-stiff performance at the Emmys Monday night and sensed an opportunity for next year.) He had an easy way of engaging with the audience even while addressing Lil Wayne directly. He is also a gracious host, bringing out Bobby Shmurda, the young Brooklyn rapper with a breakout hit — “Hot” for short, since the full name is unpublishable — and an accompanying swaggering dance, which Drake gleefully did.

Lil Wayne’s charm lies in his searing recklessness. He didn’t try to warm the crowd up the way Drake did; he tried to incite it. He was energetic and funny, and also thankful, calling Drake “the one reason I am still standing on this stage today.”

Occasionally, there are reports of friction between these two, but they were more than collegial here. And it’s notable how this pairing, which even two or three years ago would have been a lopsided mentor-protégé arrangement, is now firmly a union of peers, and in some ways, one in which Drake stands taller. He is a quick study and ruthless assimilator. He’s become an expert at creating energetic anthems like “Worst Behavior,” the sorts of songs that Lil Wayne has been making for years. And Lil Wayne was kind enough to show off what he’s probably learned from Drake, singing gently on “How to Love,” and also in a hilarious bit of harmonizing at the end of Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home.”

If there was a battle, there was no winner. Well, maybe Lil Wayne is the winner: He runs Drake’s label, Young Money, and presumably profits from Drake’s success as well as his own. On “Believe Me,” the first single from the forthcoming Lil Wayne album, “Tha Carter V,” Drake raps, “I’ll be rocking with the team ’til ‘Carter IX,’ ” During the show, Drake used words like “boss” and “idol” to describe Lil Wayne. But a general is nothing without great soldiers, especially those who grow up to be generals themselves.

The “Drake vs. Lil Wayne” tour continues through Sept. 27; ticketmaster.com.

Drake and Lil Wayne perform at the 2011 BET Awards

DvsLW, a collaboration with tour sponsor Capcom (the video-game publisher behind Street Fighter and many others), will enable fans to select their city, pick a side ( Drake or Lil Wayne ) during each night’s rap battle and “button mash” as if they were playing the latest Ultra Street Fighter IV video game to help their favorite rapper “power up” and impact their performances in real time. The app was created by Echo Park-based production company iam8bit in association with Drake’s management company October’s Very Own, Young Money Entertainment and Capcom.

“We are both thrilled that our fans will get the unique opportunity to join us in this interactive experience,” Drake and Lil Wayne said in a statement.

Trending on Billboard

Tour-specific interactive apps are still an emerging trend in the concert space, as they’re often costly to produce for such a limited time. However, several artists — with the help of sponsor partners — have had success with their own versions, including the Rolling Stones’ 50 and Counting app (sponsored by Citi Private Pass), which allowed fans in each city to request their favorite song. The app helped Citi and branding agency MAC Presents take home the top Concert Marketing & Promotion award last fall at the Billboard Touring Awards.

One Direction also debuted a 1D VIP app, as part of its “nearly seven-figure” investment from tour sponsor Nabisco, for 2013’s North American tour.

DvsLW is available on Google Play and the Apple app store under “Drake vs Lil Wayne.” Amanda White and Jon Gibson of iam8bit added of the app, “Artists don’t do this sort of thing for their fans very often, so we think we are out in front of improving the interactive concert and overall experience for the show.”

From Drake Jabs to Lil Wayne Defenders, Fans Are Reacting to Kendrick Lamar Headlining the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show

Kendrick Lamar is heading to the Super Bowl — and fans certainly have something to say about it.

On Sunday (Sept. 8), the superstar Compton rapper was announced as the headliner for the 2025 Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, set for Feb. 9, 2025 in New Orleans. This marks the second time K. Dot will grace the stage at the NFL’s main event, after he was a special guest alongside Dr. Dre’s West Coast hip-hop showcase in 2022.

Kendrick Lamar to Headline 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show

Fans Choose Andy Rivera's 'Moncler' as This Week's Favorite New Music Latin

“You know there’s only one opportunity to win a championship,” Lamar says in a promotional clip on Instagram for his performance at the big game. “No round two’s.”

Naturally, fans lit up social media shortly after the announcement, with many commenting on Lamar’s high-profile rap beef with Drake and others expressing disappointment over New Orleans native Lil Wayne not being chosen to represent his hometown at the Super Bowl. Others shared their excitement over Lamar possibly bringing his anthemic Drizzy diss “Not Like Us” to millions of viewers around the world.

“The Compton kid has completely cracked the code,” one fan commented under Kendrick’s Super Bowl announcement on Instagram . Another user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “HE IS ON TOP OF THE WORLD.” That sentiment was echoed in another X comment. “OMG!!!!!!!!! THIS IS KENDRICK LAMAR’S YEAR!!!!!!,” a fan wrote .

“I don’t usually watch the Super Bowl, but I’ll absolutely be watching for the Kendrick concert,” another added on X .

As expected, countless fans on social media also took the opportunity to bring Drake into the conversation, with dozens of onlookers referencing K. Dot’s back-and-forth diss tracks with the Toronto MC earlier this year. The beef culminated with Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” which became a monster hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart for two nonconsecutive weeks in May.

“Love this! Can’t wait to hear not like us on the world stage. Drake finna cry in the corner,” someone commented on the NFL’s X account , while another added that the 6 God’s fans are “in shambles” following the news. “They just gave bro the opportunity to diss tf outta drake on super bowl,” a user wrote on Lamar’s Instagram page. “drake drops 100 gigs of throwaway bs. kendrick drops a SUPER BOWL ANNOUNCEMENT,” another wrote on X , referencing Drake’s recent drop of content.

Some also speculated the possibility of Kendrick squashing his beef with Drake by inviting him onstage during the halftime show. “Special guest, drake?” an X fan q u e s t i o n e d . Another person on Lamar’s Instagram joked, “Scenes when he brings out drake and they squash the beef and make out with each other.”

Lil Wayne’s name became a trending topic on X following K. Dot’s Super Bowl Halftime Show announcement, as numerous Weezy fans found it disrespectful to overlook the veteran rapper, who hails from the Louisiana city.

“Not having Lil Wayne headline is a slap to the face,” a person commented under Lamar’s announcement on Instagram. “Lil Wayne def should’ve been picked to perform at the superbowl. He’s literally from New Orleans and a rap legend…,” another wrote on X . Another Instagram commenter suggested that inviting Wayne onstage as a special guest would be “next level.”

Other social media comments ranged from which other special guests Lamar might invite to join him on stage — including the possibility of Eminem and Beyonce — while others hope that K. Dot’s Super Bowl gig will also bring an announcement of a new album. Lamar’s last studio release, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers , debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in May 2022.

The Super Bowl Halftime Show will be shown live on Fox from the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Feb. 9. It will also be the sixth year that the show will be programmed by Roc Nation, which is executive producing the show alongside Jesse Collins, produced by DPS and directed by Hamish Hamilton. Creative direction for Lamar’s performance will be provided by pgLang, the creative imprint co-founded by the rapper.

In the meantime, however, it's believed that Apple Intelligence's slow rollout could significantly hamper supercycle potential.
