Transit and transfer passengers flying through Singapore Changi Airport can once again experience the Free Singapore Tour, this time with refreshed itineraries and a new Changi Precinct tour.

SINGAPORE, 3 April 2023 – Changi Airport Group (CAG), Singapore Airlines (SIA) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) re-launched the Free Singapore Tour today after a three-year hiatus due to Covid-19. Three of the existing tours available since pre-Covid-19 - the City Sights Tour, Heritage Tour and Jewel Tour – have been refreshed to include new points of interest. A brand-new Changi Precinct tour will introduce travellers to the interesting sights and sounds of the eastern region surrounding Singapore Changi Airport. Each tour lasts 2.5 hours and will be available daily, with plans to progressively increase to nine tours a day.

With transit and transfer passengers accounting for about 30% of passenger traffic at Changi Airport pre-pandemic, the tour was first introduced in 1987 to enhance the airport’s attractiveness as a transfer hub and to entice transit and transfer passengers to visit Singapore as a holiday destination. In 2019, over 80,000 passengers went on the Free Singapore Tour. The top markets were India, Australia and Indonesia, with Indian and Australian travellers making up more than one third of the total participants.

New Changi Precinct tour to showcase eastern Singapore

The Changi Precinct Tour is a new itinerary that will bring participants to the eastern part of Singapore to visit local community spaces such as the Tampines heartland, and to admire the rustic charms of Changi Village and Changi Beach. It offers a glimpse of how local residents live, and tells the tale of Singapore’s history on this part of the island, away from the usual hustle and bustle of Singapore’s city centre.

Refreshed itineraries to offer travellers new experiences

At the Jewel Tour, in addition to visiting popular attractions like the Shiseido Forest Valley and the HSBC Rain Vortex, participants can now discover more about Singapore’s food heritage through local brands such as Bee Cheng Hiang and Tong Garden, and sample local snacks at the same time. Another new component of the tour is a free guided walkthrough of a digital attraction - Changi Experience Studio - for participants to experience some of its airport-themed games and interactive exhibits.

New pit stops in the City Sights Tour include the Civic District, where travellers will get an introduction to Singapore’s urban development through visits to various national monuments including the National Gallery Singapore, Anderson Bridge and The Padang. The bus route will also pass through the new Marina Bay Financial District enroute to Gardens by the Bay. The Heritage Tour, available from June, will feature places of interest such as the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Chinatown, Arab Street and Haji Lane, for participants to gain a more in-depth understanding of Singapore’s unique and diverse multi-cultural heritage.

The refreshed itineraries also highlight sustainability features at some of the locations featured in the tours, to give participants an overview of Singapore’s sustainability efforts. These include the Eco Community Garden at the rooftop of Our Tampines Hub (as part of the Changi Precinct Tour), environmental sustainability initiatives implemented at Gardens by the Bay (as part of the City Sights Tour) and Jewel (as part of the Jewel Tour).

Monster Day Tours has been appointed by CAG, SIA, and STB to run the Free Singapore Tours.

Mr Lim Ching Kiat, Executive Vice President of Air Hub & Cargo Development at CAG, said, “The Free Singapore Tour was very popular among our transit and transfer passengers prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, and we are happy to bring it back with the resumption of travel. For travellers who choose to transit or transfer at Changi Airport, the Free Singapore Tour is designed to give them a glimpse of what Singapore has to offer, including the unique attractions and offerings at Jewel Changi Airport and the neighbouring Changi Precinct which has a rich cultural and historical heritage. Together with our partners, SIA and STB, we hope to welcome more passengers who fly through Changi Airport to enjoy a slice of Singapore through our new tours and world-class attractions and facilities.”

Mr Lee Lik Hsin, Executive Vice President Commercial, Singapore Airlines, said, “We welcome the timely relaunch of the enhanced Free Singapore Tour, which offers a unique transit experience for our customers. We are pleased to continue working closely with CAG and STB to promote the sustainable growth of travel to and through Singapore.”

Mr Chang Chee Pey, Assistant Chief Executive, Marketing Group, Singapore Tourism Board , said, "We are delighted to bring back the Free Singapore Tour through our long-standing partnership with CAG and SIA. It is imperative for us to refresh our tourism offerings to meet the demand for wellness and eco-conscious travel, and cater to travellers seeking deeper experiences. We hope that the tour will inspire transit and transfer passengers to plan a longer trip to Singapore in future, and discover much more of what our vibrant city has to offer.”

Book a tour in advance on new portal

Advance booking is now available on Changi Airport’s website. Transit and transfer passengers who wish to join the Free Singapore Tour must have a layover period of at least 5.5 hours but less than 24 hours. Participants will need to have a valid entry visa for Singapore to take part in the tours.

Free Singapore tours return to Changi Airport after 2-year hiatus

Jordan Waller

Airline passengers with a long layover at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) can once again enjoy free tours of the city to pass their time. The free Singapore tours are back after two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Launched in 1987 by Singapore Airlines, the Singapore Tourism Board and Changi Airport Group, the tours allow travelers with long layover times to explore the surrounding areas without charge.

With around 30% of (pre-pandemic) Changi passengers classed as in transit or transferring, the tours were a successful tourist board gambit to entice new visitors to the region.

"We are happy to bring [the tour] back with the resumption of travel," shared Lim Ching Kiat, the executive vice president of air hub and cargo development at Changi Airport Group, when he announced the return. "For travellers who choose to transit or transfer at Changi Airport, the Free Singapore Tour is designed to give them a glimpse of what Singapore has to offer."

More than 800,000 tourists enjoyed the tours annually before the 2019 hiatus. At that time, three tours operated (the City Sights Tour, the Jewel Tour and the Heritage Tour), all of which are now reinstated. A new tour, the Changi Precinct Tour, was introduced with the relaunch.

Each tour offers a slightly different flavor:

  • The City Sights Tour showcases the Singapore cityscape with stops at two of the city's landmarks, Merlion Park and Jubilee Bridge.
  • The Jewel Tour includes a curated tour through Changi Airport, taking in various iconic features of the hub, including the HSBC Rain Vortex, the world's tallest indoor waterfall.
  • The Heritage Tour is a condensed deep dive into the history and culture of the area. It includes visits to the Civic District, Chinatown and the Kampong Gelam neighborhood.
  • The new Changi Precinct Tour provides an immersive experience of Singaporean life, taking you through a residential town and quiet village before culminating at Changi Beach Park.

Tours run daily, and each lasts about 2 1/2 hours; there are plans to eventually offer nine tours per day. The tours are recommended for travelers with at least 5 1/2 to 24 hours of free time.

Free singapore tours are back at changi airport after 2-year break.

If you are transiting or transferring at Singapore Changi Airport, you can while away the time on a Free Singapore Tour.

Now that international traffic is again filling the halls of Singapore Changi Airport , transit passengers are looking for something to while away the hours until their next flight. From today they can actually enjoy that free time as the renowned Free Singapore Tours are back in action after a two-year break.

In a joint announcement, Changi Airport Group (CAG), Singapore Airlines (SIA) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) re-launched the Free Singapore Tour today after an enforced two-year hiatus due to COVID-19. The three tours operating in 2019 are now back in action, with a new one added to the roster.

Four free tours to choose from

The City Sights, Heritage and Changi Jewel Tours have been refreshed to include some new points of interest, so even if you have been on those before there is something new to see. Added to the list is the Changi Precinct Tour, which will introduce travelers to the sights and sounds of the eastern region surrounding the airport. Each tour lasts 2.5 hours and is available daily, with plans to progressively increase to nine tours a day.

Pre-pandemic around 30% of Changi passengers were in transit or transferring, and the tours, introduced in 1987, had a dual purpose. They were designed to make transits and transfers more enjoyable and to entice those passengers to visit Singapore as a holiday destination. In 2019 more than 80,000 passengers went on a Free Singapore Tour, with Australian and Indian travelers making up more than one-third of total tourists.

As the premier airline serving Changi Airport, Singapore Airlines Group is right behind the return of the Free Tours. SIA executive vice president Commercial, Lee Lik Hsin, said:

"We welcome the timely relaunch of the enhanced Free Singapore Tour, which offers a unique transit experience for our customers. We are pleased to continue working closely with CAG and STB to promote the sustainable growth of travel to and through Singapore."

Apart from being free, what's unique about these tours is that they take in the highlights of Singapore for travelers who would otherwise be twiddling their thumbs at the airport . The new Changi Precinct Tour takes guests to the eastern part of the island to visit local community spaces and enjoy the rustic charms of Changi Village and Changi Beach. It gives a glimpse into how locals live and tells the tale of Singapore's history on this part of the island, well away from the hustle and bustle of the city center.

We'd love to see you on Instagram - follow us here !

Tours to suit all tastes

For those who like the hustle and bustle, the City Sights Tour visits various national monuments, including the National Gallery of Singapore. The route also passes through the new Marina Bay Financial District on its way to the Gardens by the Bay area. The Heritage Tour starts in June and will feature places of interest, including the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Chinatown, Arab Street and Haji Lane, to give an understanding of Singapore's diverse multicultural heritage.

CAG EVP of Air Hub and Cargo development Lim Ching Kiat welcomed the tour's return, saying they were very popular pre-COVID and the airport is very happy to have them back.

"The Free Singapore tour is designed to give them a glimpse of what Singapore has to offer, including the unique attractions and offerings at Jewel Changi airport and the neighbouring Changi precinct which has a rich cultural and historical heritage."

To join a tour transit and transfer passengers must have a layover period of at least 5.5 hours but less than 24 hours and will need to have a valid entry visa for Singapore. The tours can be booked in advance on Changi Airport's website.

A brand-new Changi Precinct Tour will introduce travellers to the interesting sights and sounds of the eastern region surrounding Singapore Changi Airport.

Each tour lasts 2.5 hours and will be available daily, with plans to progressively increase to nine tours a day.

With transit and transfer passengers accounting for about 30 per cent of passenger traffic at Changi Airport pre-pandemic, the tour was first introduced in 1987 to enhance the airport’s attractiveness as a transfer hub and to entice transit and transfer passengers to visit Singapore as a holiday destination. In 2019, over 80,000 passengers went on the Free Singapore Tour.

The top markets were India, Australia, and Indonesia, with Indian and Australian travellers making up more than one third of the total participants.

Another new component of the tour is a free guided walkthrough of a digital attraction – Changi Experience Studio – for participants to experience some of its airport-themed games and interactive exhibits.

New pit stops in the City Sights Tour include the Civic District, where travellers will get an introduction to Singapore’s urban development through visits to various national monuments including the National Gallery Singapore, Anderson Bridge, and The Padang.

The bus route will also pass through the new Marina Bay Financial District enroute to Gardens by the Bay. The Heritage Tour, available from June, will feature places of interest such as the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Chinatown, Arab Street, and Haji Lane, for participants to gain a more in-depth understanding of Singapore’s unique and diverse multi-cultural heritage.

“For travellers who choose to transit or transfer at Changi Airport, the Free Singapore Tour is designed to give them a glimpse of what Singapore has to offer, including the unique attractions and offerings at Jewel Changi Airport and the neighbouring Changi Precinct which has a rich cultural and historical heritage.

“Together with our partners, SIA and STB, we hope to welcome more passengers who fly through Changi Airport to enjoy a slice of Singapore through our new tours and world-class attractions and facilities.”

Mr Chang Chee Pey, Assistant Chief Executive, Marketing Group, Singapore Tourism Board, said, “We are delighted to bring back the Free Singapore Tour through our long-standing partnership with CAG and SIA. It is imperative for us to refresh our tourism offerings to meet the demand for wellness and eco-conscious travel, and cater to travellers seeking deeper experiences.

“We hope that the tour will inspire transit and transfer passengers to plan a longer trip to Singapore in future, and discover much more of what our vibrant city has to offer.”

Collecting a GST Refund at Changi International Airport

Shopping in Singapore is duty-free, and you can receive a 7% goods and service tax (GST) refund from all eligible purchases at the airport.

  • You must spend at least $64 or SGD100 for each purchase in a shop to be eligible. *Note , there is a maximum of three receipts per day per store.
  • Some shops use the eTRS system. If they do, they will provide you with an eTRS ticket. If the store does not use the eTRS system, show your passport and ask for a GST refund voucher. This is easy; almost all shops encourage you to buy by reminding you how much GST you get back.
  • Once at the airport, go to the eTRS self-help kiosk. There are two kiosks at the airport. One before check-in and one after in case you have items that need checking. At the booth, swipe your passport, then scan your eTRS tickets. You can then choose your refund options. Refunds can be claimed in cash, credit to your credit card , or shopping vouchers.
  • Once you have checked in, head to the Global Refund counter or Premier Tax-Free counters in the departure lounge to collect the actual refund.

Just know that a handling fee will be deducted from the total refund amount.

I know some of you will appreciate this information. For me, it’s far too much work, and I don’t buy enough expensive items for this to be worth my time.

Food and Drinks Inside Changi International Airport

Changi Airport boasts over 200 dining options that cover every genre of food and every price point. For a complete listing of food and drink options, see the directory of restaurants .

Lounges Inside Changi International Airport

There are lots of airport lounges! As a holder of Priority Pass, I had high hopes for our pre-flight time. Unfortunately, I choose the wrong lounge.

Avoid SATS Premier Lounge. It was dirty, it stunk of dead fish, and I had one bite of a steak stir fry that I have still not recovered from — no kidding. Three weeks in Asia, and no issues. One bite at SATS, and I’ve had “Delhi Belly” ever since.
  • Airline Lounges : Changi International Airport Lounges .
  • Priority Pass Lounges: Changi International Airport Priority Pass Lounges
  • Pay-Per-Use Lounges: Changi International Airport Pay-Per-Use Lounges .

If you don’t have access to these lounges, don’t worry. There are free lounges throughout Changi Airport in all terminals. Here is a list of the free “snooze lounges”: Changi International Airport Free Snooze Lounges .

Closing Thoughts

Our approach to exploring Changi International Airport was to arrive several hours earlier than our departing flight. This was easy to do as our departing trip was at 10:30 pm. We arrived, stored our luggage in the terminal we were departing from then went straight to the Jewel.

This airport is impressive. It’s not only a marvel to view, but it’s immaculate and organized. For example, getting through security took a total of ten minutes. Where we live in Orlando , an hour is considered decent (SMH).

You could spend hours upon hours exploring it all, but realistically, the main attractions are the shopping and the waterfall inside the Jewel.

If you are connecting through or heading to Singapore, you need to make a point of exploring Changi International Airport.

Once you’ve experienced it, well, you will forever see our airports as “blah.”

Set to showcase eastern parts of Singapore’s Changi Airport, the city’s urban areas and local communities, the Free Singapore Tour has been relaunched. It follows a two-year hiatus caused by the pandemic, and its relaunch will see refreshed parts added to entice passengers.

Changi Singapore tour

Singapore's Changi Airport launches Free Singapore tour today after two-year hiatus.

Changi Airport Group (CAG), Singapore Airlines (SIA) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) have relaunched the free Singapore tour after a two-year hiatus caused by COVID-19. Current tours that were available prior to the pandemic – the City Sights Tour, Heritage Tour and Jewel Tour – have been refreshed to garner new interest. However, a new Changi Precinct tour will incorporate interesting sights and sounds of the Singapore Changi Airport’s eastern region, to enhance travellers experience. Every tour lasts two-and-a-half hours and will run daily, set to increase to nine tours daily.

Another new component of the tour is a free guided walkthrough of a digital attraction – Changi Experience Studio – for participants to experience some of its airport-themed games and interactive exhibits.

New pit stops in the City Sights Tour include the Civic District, where travellers will get an introduction to Singapore’s urban development through visits to various national monuments including the National Gallery Singapore, Anderson Bridge and The Padang. Videh Kumar Jaipuriar has been nominated for his exemplary leadership in managing and navigating Delhi International Airport (DEL) during the COVID-19 pandemic. He led multiple initiatives to ensure business continuity at DEL, which included passenger safety and convenience, stakeholder management, cash conservation, adoption of new technologies, and care for environment and employee safety.

He proactively engaged with the government stakeholders and supported them in safeguarding aviation through strong confidence building measures for travellers, such as developing several indigenous technology solutions like air circulation with six changes per hour and a combination of UV and plasma disinfection systems to provide safest journey experience to their passengers. Under his leadership, DEL has been forefront of implementing safety measures which was later adopted across the country.

Despite lockdown, Jaipuriar ensured that DEL was operational for rescue missions, medical evacuations, and transporting medical essentials to various parts of the country. He further led the Vande Bharat Mission flights of Government of India (a rescue mission to get Indians back to India), as well as rescue flights by other international governments. His outstanding leadership across all areas across the stakeholders in the aviation ecosystem and going beyond the call of duty in managing and navigating this crisis for a national capital airport having national importance makes him the apt choice for the Person of the Year Award.

Eng. Adnan Saggaf

Adnan Saggaf continues to demonstrate strong leadership skills throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and brought out of the box ideas in attracting traffic and to support his team during this difficult time. With new innovative ideas in balancing cash flow, the facilities were kept maintained and the personal were kept employed.

Saggaf has protected the financial stability of his staff income, ensured valuable cost cutting management, shown excellent performance of crisis management, and exceptional negotiation skills shown with authority regarding agreement restructuring and receivable payments.

To handle the loss of Umrah traffic to the airport, Saggaf chose to attract new airlines, mainly LCCs, to use the terminal with attractive offers and more reliable services. He built a new strategy by diversifying the airport offers. He prepared the facilities by deploying new technology and working on enhancing passenger experience. Saggaf also initiated a capacity building programme for the airside team by drafting SOPS, training and coaching, as well as initiating dedicated workshops to discuss ideas and to deploy new initiatives.

Leaders show strength in difficult times, and this is exactly what Saggaf showed and why he deserves to be awarded as the Person of the year 2021.

Peter Hall

Peter has been with the Sangster International Airport for over 25 years.

He has experience in customer service, operations and now oversees the security function and is also the Chief Operations Officer.

Peter has been instrumental in co-ordinating the preparation and implementation of a COVID-19 response plan for not just MBJ, but to guide the operation of all agencies operating on airport. The aim of this plan was to ensure a safe environment for staff and the travelling public; therefore, this plan was instrumental to establish consumer/travellers/public confidence and provided information and guidelines on the new protocols implemented at the airport.

Peter is well known for his expertise in investigation and aviation security. His co-operation with law enforcement stakeholders has been unrelenting in assuring the security of the airport and stakeholders alike.

While Peter is known as a firm individual that displays the outmost professionalism and integrity, he operates on the basis of equity and fairness in all matters relating to staff, clients, passengers and the general public.

Robson Freitas

Robson Freitas has developed and led the BH Airport plan for the resumption of airport operations post-COVID-19, as well as being responsible for leading the group of Directors and Managers at the airport, defining the three main pillars of recovery: Health and Safety of People, Institutional and Integrated Communication and Institutional Partners. These central pillars include ensuring hygiene and health and social distances measures for passengers, users, and the airport community, in addition to participating in strategic committees involving the public sectors to comply with regulatory rules. Freitas developed the COVID guardians programme, who were responsible in monitoring and following up on the measures already implemented for COVID-19 and advising users, employees and other people on compliance with distancing, hygiene and health measures recommended by health authorities. He also developed a COVID booklet with information and guidance for the airport community regarding good hygiene and health practices and led the beginning of the publication of a monthly newsletter with passenger curve information, allowing the planning of reopening and rehiring by commercial stores. Freitas also supported the reduction of OPEX by planning the temporary closure of areas, toilets and equipment in common use and internalising some activities.

Satyaki Raghunath

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Raghunath worked closely with all the aero concessionaires and cargo operators to minimise disruption and provide financial relief to them. The airline marketing team helped launch a historic first route to the U.S. West Coast and the cargo team at BIAL also achieved record numbers over this period, with the airport becoming India’s leading airport for the export of perishables. Despite the impact of COVID-19, Raghunath has led a digital transformation and expansion at BIAL airport, with new initiatives and the deployment of the fully biometric-based self-boarding solution for seamless passenger flow and travel experiences and a process automation and analytics platform. These initiatives amongst many others, meant that the airport won ACI World’s ‘Voice of the Customer’ initiative, which recognised BIAL airports efforts to prioritise their customers during COVID-19. Raghunath has remained a staunch and resilient leader during such an uncertain time and is very much appreciated by his team.

Alicia Prince

As Head of Operations, Alicia Prince has played a critical role in leading and navigating Cairns Airport through the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, Prince implemented a functional plan to ensure business continuity and staff welfare, segregating front-line operational staff into work teams to avoid interaction between groups, as well as strict sanitisation processes. She ensured that the $55 million domestic Terminal upgrade continued safely despite the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis.

She also deployed the COVIDSafe Operation Plan for Cairns Airport, which was endorsed and later commended by Queensland Chief Health Officer. As part of this plan Alicia developed an airport layout to provide physical separation of low risk and high-risk arrivals and initiated increased hygiene and sanitisation protocols. The health and safety of the airport community was paramount to maintaining operations, and in response to this Alicia initiated a COVIDSafe training program for the entire airport community and worked closely with her team to deliver.

As a result of the great work Prince has done to ensure COVID-19 best practices, Cairns Airport was one of the first Australian Airports to be awarded an ACI Global Health Accreditation.

Alicia also led the terminal optimisation project, which assessed and implemented terminal downscales due to the crisis. Significant savings (both financial and environmental) were achieved by reducing the operational footprint of the airport.

Whilst maintaining operations throughout the pandemic was a priority, Alicia ensured her team were kept well informed and engaged. Cairns Airport has a team of 33 volunteers which form part of Alicia’s wider team. To ensure they remained connected and cared for, Alicia and her team created care packages including home-made cakes and personally delivered to each of the volunteers’ houses in a COVIDSafe manner. Alicia demonstrated great leadership throughout the pandemic and continues to do so today. Her clear and transparent communication and collaboration with other Australian Airports and key agencies to ensure best practice and alignment contributed greatly to business continuity. Furthermore, all the above was managed whilst working remotely and juggling home schooling with her two young boys.

Balram Bheodari

Balram Bheodari leads Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as North America’s most efficient airport, due to his vast knowledge of and astute attention to efficiency in aviation, which has allowed the airport to thrive in the most difficult of markets. Bheodari combines operational expertise, integrity, and selflessness to provide a quality of leadership throughout Atlanta Airport. He oversees all facets of airport governance, including operations and a multi-billion-dollar capital improvement programme, ATLNext, designed to pave the way for Atlanta’s growth over the next 20 years. During COVID-19, Bheodari developed a comprehensive resumption of operations playbook that served to support ATL’s recovery efforts. With guidance from the Federal Aviation Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) amid evolving health and safety guidelines, Bheodari steadfastly encouraged collaboration among stakeholders, team-building among aviation employees, and adaptability in uncertain times. Throughout the pandemic, he participated in daily calls with Airports Council International and other large-hub airports to share best practices as well as information from Washington, D.C. federal offices and the CDC.

He aimed to restore customer confidence and ensure the airport was a healthy facility using COVID-19 safe protocols. Since, the airport achieved Airport of the Year by the Airport Minority Advisory Council (AMAC).

During the height of the pandemic, Bheodari was the most ardent supporter of our mission-critical employees. Having worked his way up through the ranks, he fully appreciates the oftentimes thankless jobs these employees perform that keep the Airport safe and running optimally at all times. Morale never flagged because Bheodari made sure those employees felt valued through hazard pay, special meals, social media posts, intranet spotlight features, and other incentives.

His actions and his directives all reflect his commitment to the three key focus areas of our organisation’s strategic plan: people, purpose and performance.

Jonas Abrahamsson

Jonas Abrahamsson has shown the strength to steer the company towards its long-term sustainable goals, despite the challenges of COVID-19. Abrahamsson has ensured that Swedavia achieved its net zero target for all ten of the airports in 2020 and has continued to support strategic development and innovation to further the cause of sustainable air travel. During 2020, when passenger numbers where down over 90 per cent and a lot of investments were paused, he decided that investments in the company’s net zero target should proceed, allowing Swedavia to become the first net zero airport group by the end of 2020.

Chris Dinsdale

Chris Dinsdale has worked at Budapest Airport since 2015, originally as CFO until March 2021, where he was nominated for the position as CEO. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dinsdale, as CFO of the airport at the time, fought relentlessly to make sure that the company survived the crisis and worked with great commitment to secure the funding of the airport. For example, a voluntary salary cut for the executives and the founding of the Budapest Airport Foundation, which supports blue collar workers who lost their job during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After being nominated to CEO position in March 2021, Dinsdale continues to work closely with the executive team to create a clear COVID-19 recovery strategy for Budapest Airport. This will also mean that we come out stronger of the pandemic and have a clear focus. Dinsdale is an inspiring true leader who helped us all to cope with the very difficult times of the pandemic and I am convinced that he truly deserves this award.

Concert review: Singapore students perform with IU at K-pop star’s concert

free singapore tour times

2024 IU H.E.R. World Tour Concert In Singapore

Singapore indoor stadium.

It has been five years since IU’s last concert here, and the South Korean singer-actress has clearly missed being away from the Lion City.

This time, the 30-year-old included Singapore performers in her show, inviting a group of 12 students from local performing arts studio Maddspace to share the stage with her.

The child performers added to the show’s sense of celebration and optimism, which was attended by about 8,700 fans.

With her poise and girl-next-door charm, the K-pop star made use of the large Singapore Indoor Stadium to good effect through the use of immersive animated backgrounds, and support from 16 back-up dancers. The first few rows of the audience were treated with countless showers of confetti and colourful streamers, which added to the party atmosphere.

The H.E.R. World Tour, known in some places as the H.E.R.E.H. World Tour, started in South Korea in March and has made stops in Japan and Taiwan, with upcoming gigs in locations such as Germany and the United States. Her April 20 show is the ninth on this tour, and she performs again at the same venue on April 21. Both shows are sold out.

Here are three highlights from her April 20 show.

1. Local talent on display

Halfway through the upbeat opening number Holssi, 12 students came onstage and joined her for the second chorus.

free singapore tour times

Dressed in trendy outfits, the students grooved with the star for about 30 seconds, as she delivered the well-known lines: “You say hoo, I may fly/you say hoo, then I fly.” At this point, a confetti cannon was activated, triggering the evening’s first confetti shower.

During a transition segment later, one of the students, aged eight, had the stage to herself for about three minutes.

After the number Obliviate, the child was fashioned as a younger version of IU in a white dress as she held a lit candle with both hands, and knelt in the centre of the stage as effects simulated a thunderstorm.

After this, the scene transformed into an idyllic rainforest. A golden path of stars linked the girl to the grown-up IU, who proceeded to sing the song Celebrity.

After the number, IU said: “Please give a big applause to my little friend. And during Holssi, our baby dancers are also from Singapore.”

2. Heartfelt interaction with fans

The star is known for her interaction with audiences, and she made it a point to pick up some local lingo.

She spoke in a mixture of Korean and English, and threw Singlish phrases into the mix.

One phrase was “swee lah”, which included the Hokkien word for “beautiful”. Although it took some practice to get the intonation right – with the emphasis on “swee” – she eventually perfected this to warm response from the audience.

Another phrase was “steady lah”, which she used to praise the audience’s singing. Admittedly, these phrases did not come naturally to her, as she checked repeatedly with her interpreter as to whether she was using them correctly. But the fact that she tried to localise her banter was admirable.

Before the performance, attendees were also given a concert-themed keyring and luggage tag. These gifts were said to be prepared by the star’s mother, who has given cushions to audiences at the star’s concerts in South Korea.

During the Singapore show, IU shared that the cushions were too bulky to ship over, and said: “I know the price does not matter to you guys, but (this gift) is not cheaper than the cushion.”

The extra mile she put into personalising her interaction with fans made the experience all the more special.

3. Newer hits

Since IU’s last concert here at The Star Theatre, she has released her fifth studio album Lilac (2021) and two EPs – Pieces (2021) and The Winning (2024).

That is a lot of new material to showcase, and the star wasted no time during the three-hour show getting audiences up to speed.

Dance-pop tune Celebrity was a standout, with her dancers busting out elaborate moves against a sea of golden lights. Funky song Coin, with its brassy flourishes, upped the energy and sass, while the rousing Shopper inspired with its lyrics of big dreams and an exhilarating future.

The sugary Lilac, about love during springtime, also made for a sweet goodbye during the encore segment, before the fizzy Palette closed the show, leaving a honeyed aftertaste which hopefully will not need to last for the next half a decade.
