The best hotels in Sicily

Grand Hotel Timeo A Belmond Hotel Taormina

Caught in the crosshairs of civilisations for centuries, thanks to its vulnerable geography, Sicily enjoys an unusually complex cultural mosaic for such a small, ravishing, island and some of the best hotels in the Med. Yet among its vast array of food , art, religion and architecture lies a fiercely unified identity – one that separates it from mainland Italy and makes it endlessly alluring. Sicily’s best hotels reflect this curious blend of unity and variance – each whispering a different tale of conquest and confrontation, all honouring their extraordinary natural surroundings and offering sweet breakfast feasts of cannoli, granita and brioche con tuppu .

From 18th-century palaces salvaged from Palermo’s crumbling splendour to porous, time-warp rooms inhaling the Aeolians’ salty Tyrrhenian air, here are the best hotels in Sicily. For private stays, see our pick of the best villas in Sicily .

Villa Igiea, a Rocco Forte Hotel, Palermo

Featured on our 2023 Gold List of the best hotels in the world

This graceful estate is such a sharp contrast to wild  Palermo  that once you arrive you feel as though you have travelled to the other side of Sicily, not simply 10 minutes from the city centre. Villa Igiea is a legacy resort in the area, bought as a private estate by the Florios, once one of Italy’s wealthiest families, but then converted in the early 1900s into a wellness retreat that was popular with royalty. Decades later, it had lost its lustre until hotel magnate Rocco Forte brought it back to life in 2021. Now its pool, bars, and breezy guest rooms feel like a glitzy clubhouse of sorts for European dynasty families, who congregate for aperitivo hour in dresses and loafers on the outdoor terrace overlooking the bay, a dapper pianist tickling the ivories in the corner. You will want to order that third ice-cold martini just to muster up the courage to chat with the multilingual family – from Sweden? England? – at the table next to you (but eavesdropping is a fine runner-up). Inside, Art Nouveau touches include whimsical frescoes and grand staircases; while no two suites are alike (mine was done in tidy navy and white with beautifully colourful tiled bathrooms), they feel like a modern extension of what still is very much a classic seaside resort. Even in this newest iteration, Villa Igiea feels like a hotel with its own orbit, and one that creates a micro universe of characters rollicking against the most fanciful backdrop. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? Erin Florio

Address: Villa Igiea, Via Belmonte, 43, 90142 Palermo PA, Italy Price: Rooms from about £472 per night

Palazzo Previtera in sicily

Palazzo Previtera, Linguaglossa

A scenic drive along the foot of Mount Etna, with the monumental volcano in front, leads to the small village of Linguarossa and Palazzo Previtera. Here Alfio welcomes guests into his home – the B&B has been in his family for over 350 years. Together with his parents Alberto and Mariella, Alfio spent 10 years restoring the pre-Baroque building and the antique furniture within. An additional integration of designer furnishings – a 1970s sofa by Vico Magistretti, a chaise longue by Antonio Citterio – adds a touch of contemporaneity to what is otherwise a perfect preservation of the past.

A wonderful botanical garden surrounds the four rooms and two self-catered apartments, with a myriad of plant and flower species from the centenary cherry tree to Asian and Sicilian frangipani, white and pink lotus, apricots, Arabic jasmine and over one hundred kinds of roses. Perched above the garden is a balcony from where you can peek at the brooding crater of Mount Etna. This is also a perfect location for setting out on an eight-hour guided hike (or a jeep journey for the less athletic) to the top of Etna or an outing to discover the vineyards and wineries on its slopes. For a day at the beach, Taormina is only a 20-minute car journey. Lucrezia Worthington

Address: Via D. Alighieri, 24, 95015 Linguaglossa CT, Italy Price: Rooms from about £146 per night

pool at Susafa

Susafa, Polizzi Generosa

Among golden wheat fields and expanses of rural land, Susafa lies in Madonie Park, an impressive stretch of nature in the interior of Sicily. The property dates back to the late 1800s when the Saeli-Rizzuto family would work on the farm cultivating wheat. Five generations on, Manfredi and his siblings restructured the farmhouse into a countryside cottage filled with character and charm. Rural Sicily still plays an important role throughout the property – the restaurant is located inside the old barn, where the siblings used to play together among the haystacks.

Even today agriculture is still fundamental at Susafa. The organic olive oil is made from their own olive trees, the bread (freshly baked and served steaming hot every morning) and pasta are made from the wheat cultivated onsite and the farm-to-table cuisine is focused around vegetables and herbs picked by Chef Salvatore in their garden every morning. Depending on the season, guests can delve into Sicilian culinary traditions with Rita, who hosts cooking classes on a daily basis. In September, during tomato season, be sure to watch her making fresh tomato sauce that you can try or purchase to take home as a little souvenir. Lucrezia Worthington

Address: Contrada Susafa, 90028 Polizzi generosa PA, Italy Price: Rooms from about £259 per night

pool at Parco dei Sesi

Parco dei Sesi, Pantelleria

Parco dei Sesi, within the archaeological park, is an artistic hub with 13 rooms designed in harmony with the wild, Mediterranean surroundings. It was here on Pantelleria, the energetic island, that Massimiliano and Margot met seven years ago and, after a long-distance relationship, decided to come back and create a home from which guests could explore the volcanic Sicilian island. The property overlooks the sea, a mere 200 meters away, where the sun slowly sets on the horizon creating a deep, golden glow throughout the property – best enjoyed with a glass of local wine on the rooftop sat on Moroccan Kilim Poufs. Inspired by the island, the furnishings are minimal, using raw, natural and local materials. Conviviality is the heart of Parco dei Sesi, with four dinners a week that encourage guests to sit around the long wooden table and share conversation as the hot pizzas come out of the wood-fired oven. This is a place to disconnect; with a lack of TV and in-room WiFi, you’ll have no other choice than to embrace the simple, barefoot life. Lucrezia Worthington

Address: Strada perimetrale Ovest 95, 91017 Pantelleria TP, Italy Price: Rooms from about €200 per night

Private pool at Il San Corrado Di Noto

Il San Corrado di Noto, Val di Noto

Time hits differently at the milky-stoned Il San Corrado , amid the olive groves and light-filled courtyards once owned by an Italian prince. A fountain trickle, adagio clack of Italian shoes pacing the archways and ubiquitous whiffs of sun-scorched countryside lower shoulders several inches on arrival and sets the tempo for a leisurely stay. Traditional, near-sacred structures are gently eased into modern relevancy by architect Corrado Papa, or, in the case of the family’s private 19th century chapel, left untouched and congruous with new additions. Archways, lined with Noto artist Sergio Fiornentino’s abstract spins on classicism, slice the pure, Sicilian daylight into celestial stepping stones, while an orchid-clad library showcasing Helmut Newton prints is a smooth, shady refuge from the midday sun.

Outside, it’s all about the pool – two, which are carved with contemporary candour from Modican stone, and surrounded by elegantly dialled down suites and bucolic views. Pool villas are scattered amongst the surrounding citrus and olive groves, like perfect, fiercely private cubes of marble baths and preposterously comfortable four poster beds. Then there’s the food – good enough to warrant never leaving for the surrounding baroques’ much lauded restaurant scene. From refined brioche con gelato and Etna berry breakfasts and high-octane, almost alchemic tasting menus at Principe di Belludia to the more home-spun style, CasaPasta for ‘express’ lobster and sausage tagliatelle with Tasca D’Almerita whites, Il San Corrado is pure foodie rapture, even for these stretches. Rosalyn Wikeley

Grand Hotel Timeo A Belmond Hotel Taormina

Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo, Taormina

This Sicilian grande dame is the high-octane, Taormina stay of Slim Aarons reverie – where pool views look good from all angles and a pianist (and negronis) cajole couples to dance on the balcony against a menacing backdrop of Mount Etna. Opulent marble bathrooms and silky, wallpapered rooms spill onto terraces doused in golden sunlight – where elaborate breakfasts of granita brioche, tea regalia and sugar-dusted pastries sweeten the view. Following a long siesta under one of the beach cabanas of sister hotel, Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea, guests fling on their finery for Otto Geleng’s foodie theatre. And it’s quite a performance: flickering oil lamps trace swirls of lace along the table and animate plates of seafood that would make an artist blush, perhaps even the restaurant’s namesake German painter. While a magnificent Greek amphitheatre and Amalfi-style Taormina is right on the hotel’s doorstep, Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo’s preened, tiered gardens and elegant poolside scene makes for a relieving retreat.

Hotel Address: Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo, Via Teatro Greco, 59, 98039 Taormina ME, Italy Price: Rooms from about £327 per night

Monaci Delle Terre Nere

Monaci Delle Terre Nere, Etna National Park

Trailblazing Eco Wine Resort Monaci Delle Terre Nere remains one of Sicily’s smartest and most stylish hotels. The faded grandeur of its main house (a carefully renovated 17th-century monastery) is as magnetic as Etna herself, whose fertile slopes are combed with olive groves, apricot trees, herb gardens and vines. The volcano’s mystic presence looms over a scatter of 24 design dens, renovated old-meets-new barns and villas which blink out over a bucolic scene of rolling hills that greet the sea. This go-slow, soul-nourishing estate leverages its 60-acres of organic harvest for its destination restaurant, Locanda Nerello, where scabbardfish ragout, ancient courgettes parmigiana and various Italian classics allow the superb ingredients to take the lead.

Breakfasts are as equally thrilling – expect fresh, scrambled eggs sprinkled in wildflowers from the farm and black bee honey drizzled on homemade Sicilian bread using ancient grains. Afternoons heed the famously Sicilian Il Dolce Far Niente : drifting off to soft jazz and ice tinkling in glass of Sicilian gin by the volcanic pool, or leaning into Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s ‘The Leopard’ on a soft, cream sunlounger, with a glass of Etna red balancing precariously on the grass.

Hotel address: Monaci delle Terre Nere, Via Monaci, Via Pietralunga, sn, 95019 Zafferana etnea CT, Italy Price: Rooms from about £480 per night

Hotel Signum

Hotel Signum, Malfa

Just below Naples and above the scruffy Sicilian port of Milazzo lies a guarded Italian secret: a scattering of volcanic islets cast adrift in a sea too blue and too warm for the Mediterranean. Salina is one of them, a go-slow mass of lush, herb-covered slopes and sun-soaked hills, drifting away from its volcanic neighbours. Clinging to the foot of one of its volcanoes and occupying the old, pretty bones of a fishing village, Hotel Signum lures in a smart, understated crowd. Dazzling, Mediterranean sunshine sieves through a wild tangle of lemon trees, honeysuckle and jasmine, animating a nostalgic scene of chipped shutters, cast-iron furniture and elaborate cocktails. Rooms recall an 18th-century novelist’s genteel bolthole with mahogany furniture decorating a simple, Sicilian tile canvas and cut-work white curtains swelling in the breeze. They share the same other-worldly views across the Tyrannian to Panarea and Stromboli’s coils of smoke as the terrace, where refined suppers of sea urchin with creamy mash potato and breaded scabbardfish with tiger milk showcase the island’s land-and-sea bounty and Signum owners’ daughter, Martina Caruso wild creativity (the youngest Italian chef to receive a Michelin star).

Hotel Address: Hotel Signum, via Scalo, 15, 98050 Malfa, Salina, Italy Price: Rooms from about £167 per night

Zash Boutique Hotel and Spa

Zash Boutique Hotel and Spa, Riposto

Wrapped in acres of labyrinthine citrus groves beneath looming Mount Etna, Zash Boutique Hotel & Spa was once the summer retreat for Catania’s nobility and now thrusts guests back to a time where nature called the shots, through a contemporary prism, as one of the best hotels in Sicily. Honouring its past life as a Palmento, the cool innards of the main house (a peachy, peeling vestige of grand Sicily) now pose as a smart, destination restaurant, below it, a dimly lit spa gurgles and steams, echoing the volcanic surroundings. Rhythms are docile, set by shifting fruit trees and occasionally interrupted by the rumble of the train (worth booking a room that doesn’t back onto the track). Lava stone slabs line the walls in Iraci Architetti’s photogenic Iconic Rooms and Poolside Villas, whose cubic, glass structures and sharp furniture greatly contrast the main house’s soft antiquity, and cleverly pull the clementine trees indoors. This is one of Sicily’s lesser-known hotels, a favourite with Italians wrapped in fluffy towels, oscillating between spa and pool (sliced into volcanic rock with contemporary finesse), before tucking into Guiseppe Raciti’s signature uovo poche croccante and soul-stirring pasta plates.

Address : Zash Country Boutique Hotel, Strada Provinciale 2 I-II N60, 95018, Riposto, Sicily Italy Price: Rooms from about £158 per night

Dimora Delle Balze, Noto

An abandoned 19th-century castle just north of the baroque town of Noto seems an unusual birthday present – but following a scrupulous nine-year restoration project, Elena Lops now shares the joy, along with the discerning eye of interior designer Draga Obradovic. The estate’s masseria soul remains fully intact, its freckled grey walls and earthy, tiled rooms blending seamlessly into the surrounding prairie-like scrub and lush, rolling woodlands. Sun-dappled courtyards decorated with wrought iron day beds and large terracotta pots lead into pared-down pastel-hued bedrooms, more courtyards, and a light-filled dining room where local cheeses, meats, apricot pastries and brioche spill across a farmhouse table for breakfast. This is savoured on a weathered stone terrace, with views of Val di Noto’s gold and green haze framed by disfigured classical columns salvaged from the abandoned estate. Even the pool area seems to have seized upon the organic theme – where moonlight toys with the water’s tar-like ripples in the evening as diners drizzle focaccia generously with the estate’s own olive.

Address: Dimora Delle Balze, SS287, Noto SR, 96017, Italy Price: Rooms from about £114 per night

Hotels in Sicily 2024

A melting pot of peoples and cultures, Sicily is rich in historic and artistic testimonials of the past, telling the tale of centuries of history. The great archaeological heritage of the region includes several sites recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage sites , such as the archaeological area of Agrigento , the Baroque cities of the Val di Noto and the Roman villa del Casale.

The meeting between various cultures has produced an intriguing fusion of culinary tastes and flavours , and also a rich heritage of quality wines. In Sicily, cooking is an art displayed in many elaborate dishes, the end result of long and painstaking preparation; a ritual which culminates with the almost holy nature of the meal, always to be enjoyed in good company.

Side by side with the sweetmeats and pastries, undisputed king of Sicilian gastronomy, an important role is also played by the citrus fruits, dried fruit, sweet/sour, fruit and vegetables and olive oil. The wide variety of fried items (‘arancini’, fried pizza, bread,’ panelle’) all go to make Palermo one of the cities offering the greatest variety of street food.

Also important is the great variety nature sites, including no less than 5 regional parks and 77 nature reserves (including the Volcanic Park of Mount Etna ) and 1500 km of coast washed by the splendid sea of Sicily.

The Best Hotels in Sicily, From a 17th-Century Former Monastery to an Island Villa

hotel. room. chair. italy. balcony. bath. light. sun

Caught in the crosshairs of civilizations for centuries, thanks to its vulnerable geography, Sicily enjoys an unusually complex cultural mosaic for such a small, ravishing island and some of the best hotels in the Med. Yet among its vast array of food, art, religion, and architecture lies a fiercely unified identity—one that separates it from mainland Italy and makes it endlessly alluring. Sicily’s best hotels reflect this curious blend of unity and variance—each whispering a different tale of conquest and confrontation, all honoring their extraordinary natural surroundings and offering sweet breakfast feasts of cannoli, granita, and brioche con tuppu.

From 18th-century palaces salvaged from Palermo’s crumbling splendor to porous, time-warp rooms inhaling the Aeolians’ salty Tyrrhenian air, here are the best hotels in Sicily.

Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo Italy

Grand Hotel Timeo, A Belmond Hotel, Taormina Arrow

This Sicilian grande dame is the high-octane, Taormina stay of Slim Aarons reverie—where pool views look good from all angles and a pianist (and negronis) cajole couples to dance on the balcony against a menacing backdrop of Mount Etna. Opulent marble bathrooms and silky, wallpapered rooms spill onto terraces doused in golden sunlight—where elaborate breakfasts of granita brioche, tea regalia, and sugar-dusted pastries sweeten the view. Following a long siesta under one of the beach cabanas of sister hotel, Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea , guests fling on their finery for Otto Geleng’s foodie theatre. And it’s quite a performance: flickering oil lamps trace swirls of lace along the table and animate plates of seafood that would make an artist blush, perhaps even the restaurant’s namesake German painter. While a magnificent Greek amphitheater and Amalfi-style Taormina is right on the hotel’s doorstep, Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo’s preened, tiered gardens and elegant poolside scene makes for a relieving retreat.

Monaci Delle Terre Nere

Monaci delle Terre Nere

Agriturismo trailblazer, Monaci Delle Terre Nere, remains one of Sicily’s smartest and most stylish country hotels. The faded grandeur of its main house (a carefully renovated 17th-century monastery) is as magnetic as Etna herself, whose fertile slopes are combed with olive groves, apricot trees, herb gardens, and vines. The volcano’s mystic presence looms over a scatter of 27 design dens, renovated old-meets-new barns, and villas which blink out over a bucolic scene of rolling hills that greet the sea. This go-slow, soul-nourishing estate leverages its 60 acres of organic harvest for its destination restaurant, Locanda Nerello, where scabbardfish ragout, ancient courgettes parmigiana, and various Italian classics allow the superb ingredients to take the lead.

Breakfasts are as equally thrilling—expect fresh, scrambled eggs sprinkled in wildflowers from the farm and black bee honey drizzled on homemade Sicilian bread using ancient grains.

Dimora Delle Balze

An abandoned 19th-century castle just north of the baroque town of Noto seems an unusual birthday present—but following a scrupulous nine-year restoration project, Elena Lops now shares the joy, along with the discerning eye of interior designer Draga Obradovic. The estate’s masseria soul remains fully intact, its freckled grey walls and earthy, tiled rooms blending seamlessly into the surrounding prairie-like scrub and lush, rolling woodlands. Sun-dappled courtyards decorated with wrought iron day beds and large terra-cotta pots lead into pared-down pastel-hued bedrooms, more courtyards, and a light-filled dining room where local cheeses, meats, apricot pastries, and brioche spill across a farmhouse table for breakfast. This is savored on a weathered stone terrace, with views of Val di Noto’s gold and green haze framed by disfigured classical columns salvaged from the abandoned estate. Even the pool area seems to have seized upon the organic theme—where moonlight toys with the water’s tar-like ripples in the evening as diners drizzle focaccia generously with the estate’s own olive.

Villa Igiea, a Rocco Forte Hotel Arrow

Palermo’s disheveled honey-hued maze laments its golden age of lavish operas, fabulous parties, and vast, aristocratic palazzos. One of them was Villa Igiea, a palm-framed, resplendent beauty built in 1900 for the wealthy Florrio family. Its Art Nouveau soul was recently stirred with Olga Polizzi and Paolo Moschino’s clever old-meets-new design dialogue. This new Rocco Forte chapter saw Villa Igiea’s chandelier-antique-frescoed good looks welcome modern furniture and elegantly pared back decorations with the same warmth as they once did Europe’s Beau Monde, from Sophia Loren to Queen Victoria. Its grand 2019 opening signaled Palermo’s wider renaissance , one of the same creative flavor that filled Athens ' ancient bones a decade ago. One that is also manifest in the new authors’ contemporary rendition of classicism and commitment to locality, from the fritti and pasta ingredients to artworks nodding to the island’s striking natural beauty.

Hotel Signum

Hotel Signum

Just below Naples and above the scruffy Sicilian port of Milazzo lies a guarded Italian secret: a scattering of volcanic islets cast adrift in a sea too blue and too warm for the Mediterranean. Salina is one of them, a go-slow mass of lush, herb-covered slopes, and sun-soaked hills, drifting away from its volcanic neighbors. Clinging to the foot of one of its volcanoes and occupying the old, pretty bones of a fishing village, Hotel Signum lures in a smart, understated crowd. Dazzling, Mediterranean sunshine sieves through a wild tangle of lemon trees, honeysuckle, and jasmine, animating a nostalgic scene of chipped shutters, cast-iron furniture, and elaborate cocktails. Rooms recall an 18th-century novelist’s genteel bolthole with mahogany furniture decorating a simple, Sicilian tile canvas and cut-work white curtains swelling in the breeze. They share the same other-worldly views across the Tyrannian to Panarea and Stromboli’s coils of smoke as the terrace, where refined suppers of sea urchin with creamy mashed potato and breaded scabbardfish with tiger milk showcase the island’s land-and-sea bounty and the Signum owners’ daughter Martina Caruso's wild creativity (the youngest Italian chef to receive a Michelin star).

Zash Boutique Hotel and Spa

Wrapped in acres of labyrinthine citrus groves beneath looming Mount Etna, Zash Boutique Hotel & Spa was once the summer retreat for Catania’s nobility and now thrusts guests back to a time where nature called the shots, through a contemporary prism, as one of the best hotels in Sicily. Honoring its past life as a Palmento, the cool innards of the main house (a peachy, peeling vestige of grand Sicily) now pose as a smart, destination restaurant, below it, a dimly lit spa gurgles and steams, echoing the volcanic surroundings. This is one of Sicily’s lesser-known hotels, a favorite with Italians wrapped in fluffy towels, oscillating between spa and pool (sliced into volcanic rock with contemporary finesse), before tucking into Guiseppe Raciti’s signature uovo poche croccante and soul-stirring pasta plates.

Who Should Visit Sicily and Where Should They Go?

Sicily is an incredible destination full of natural wonders, culture, and history. Sicily is best described as one of the world’s greatest beach destinations, with some of the greatest historical sites and the greatest places to eat. It’s the perfect summer destination for the adventurous and resourceful traveler.

I recommend renting a vehicle and spending a few nights in your chosen destination. There is a lot to see, and the high concentration of Roman archeological sites will give you ample diversity in your activities.

Here are our top picks:

  • Aeolian Islands

Stay with us as we uncover each destination in this article, sharing our favorite activities, top accommodations, and mouthwatering dining options!

Where to Stay in Sicily Italy

Taormina is the most popular destination in Sicily among foreigners, without a doubt. It has a volcano as a backdrop, a massive cliff overlooking the sea, gorgeous “see-your-toes” water, and even Roman ruins.

Taormina is an excellent stop if you want to feel the warmth and culture of southern Italy but with the same luxuries as mainland Italy.

Taormina is already a busy destination in the summer and will get busier. HBO’s White Lotus is drawing enormous attention to Sicily, and Taormina is the focal point. Read this article the entire way through to find more amazing beach destinations beyond Taormina!

The Best Things to Do in Taormina:

  • Head to Mt Etna
  • Snorkel around Isola Bella
  • Drink at Churchill’s favorite bar in Piazza IX Aprile

Trapani is both a city and a municipality or subregion of Sicily. In this scenario, I am referring to the municipality. The municipality of Trapani occupies the entire western tip of Sicily, which also has five of the best beaches in Sicily.

Trapani is Sicily’s greatest secret and a must-visit destination for any beachgoer. It is one of the closest places in mainland Sicily to Africa (Tunisia). You’ll find endless breathtaking beaches in this area of Sicily, which makes it a must-visit zone.

The beaches in Trapani are not to be scoffed at. Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro is one of Italy’s most savage and beautiful beaches. It takes quite a hike, but great efforts often pay off. Come prepared with water and snacks as there are no shops here.

Trapani is for adventurous and resourceful travelers. You won’t get much English, and the area is not accustomed to the level of tourism on the Amalfi Coast. This is the real deal.

Attractions in Trapani Area:

  • Selinunte Archeological Park (Greek Temple!)
  • Gypsy Beach (Riserva Naturale Orientato dello Zingaro)
  • Cala Mazzo di Sciacca
  • Tonnara di Scopello

Our Favorite Hotels in the Trapani Region:

Torre di scopello.

Palermo is a paradoxical city at times. The public transport system is next to useless, there are sporadic garbage collection issues, many streets in the historic center are poorly lit at night, and there is a supposed crime issue (at least if you listen to tourists who have never been). The truth is Palermo has some problems. Chief amongst them is that, at times, it is heartbreakingly beautiful. Located about 50 miles from the city of Palermo, Cefalú is the perfect choice for those arriving in Palermo but wanting a more relaxing stay than is possible in the hustle and bustle of the main city. Cefalù does sit within the province of Palermo, but in a country of picturesque towns, Cefalù still holds a special place. Founded by the Greeks in the 5th Century, its name derives from the Greek  Kephalos  (Head), referring to the head-shaped rock that looms over it. While the town is beautiful, the beaches heavenly, and the food divine, no trip to Cefalù is complete without a trip to the wonderful Duomo di Cefalù.

The beautiful location, private beach, and sunbathing deck make this perfect for rest and relaxation. With onsite yoga, cycle rental, art, and photography classes, there’s something for everyone.

The Aeolian Islands

hotel tour sicilia

Want to be surprised when you hear someone speaking English in Italy? It’s not easy to achieve these days with mass tourism.

That said, there are still some hidden gems out there left over. The Isole Eolie, or the Aeolian Islands, are one of Italy’s last remaining hidden treasures.

This unknown island chain is full of natural beauty and amazing sites. It’s even home to an active volcano on the island of Stromboli. You can take a ferry from island to island or charter a boat which is the best way to visit them. Lipari and Stromboli are very popular.

15 of the Best Luxury Hotels in Sicily

Grand Hotel Timeo

There are many places that you could say ‘have it all’. But, when it comes to assets, do they have what Sicily has? Or is this island in the middle of the sparkling Mediterranean really as special as Homer and Virgil, and everyone else who has ever marvelled at it in poetry or prose, say it is. Sun drenched, surrounded by sea of the most brilliant azure, and ringed by an undulating topography of dramatic cliffs and sandy coves, Sicily doesn’t stop there. The interior is wild, and in some places arid and others quite lush. It’s got smoking Etna, and a dozen or so off shore islands to explore, and that’s before you start on the island’s history. You can see it in the great variety of architecture, and taste it in the wide variety of flavours. And what could be more luxurious than ‘having it all’ and then rounding off the island’s appeals with a reservation at one of the 15 best luxury hotels in Sicily...

Our recommendations for top luxury hotels in Sicily range from luxurious Sicilian beach hotels and resorts, to rural escapes, to chic hotels in Palermo and some of our favourite honeymoon hotels in Italy. We’re recommending spectacular views, Michelin-starred food, elegant decor and all the trimmings, in an island setting that really does have it all.

Some of Sicily’s Best Honeymoon Hotels

Belmond Villa SantAndrea

  • If you’re looking for a really special hotel on Sicily the Belmond Villa Sant'Andrea is a very strong contender to start with. It’s beautifully located around the perfect ‘c’ curve of a Sicilian bay, by a stretch of private beach, but along from a gorgeous clifftop. Inside the hotel are 71 rooms and suites, all light and airy with a beachside colour scheme and unfussy details, most of them with private terraces and balconies, plus an excellent spa and a restaurant with a terrace offering more of those perfect, remember-forever views.
  • For the best of Sicilian spectacular glamour and spectacular views you’ll want The Ashbee Hotel , a gorgeous grand villa with just 25 rooms and suites. Inside you can expect floor-to-ceiling windows, parquet floors, decorative wallpapers, designer furniture and, in some rooms private terraces and hot tubs. But there are numerous terraces to share, worthy of a film set, a pool with an incredible view of the coast and an excellent fine dining restaurant specialising in Sicilian and Mediterranean food.
  • The Grand Hotel Timeo has incredible panoramic views over the medieval town of Taormina , which you can enjoy from its romantic terraces, or from its elegant bar or restaurant, or from the privacy of your own balcony, which might even have your own private hot tub on it. There’s a pool terrace too, with a view, and you even a terrace with a view as part of the spa — you can even enjoy a massage with a view. Inside the decor is traditional and elegant, in pale colours and high quality fabrics and fittings.
  • Lovers of history or food will love the Villa Athena , a five star villa set within a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you want to look our of the open doors of your suite, and across your private terraces and see a Doric tempe, or several, then this is the place for you. Inside the rooms offer the height of Sicilian elegance, wonderful tiled floors and shaped wood furniture in pale colours. There’s also a fantastic restaurant, and a luscious garden with a pool.

For seaside luxury

Ortea Palace

  • On the historic harbour of Syracuse , right opposite the water, is the Ortea Palace , a beautiful 1920s era building with 75 cleverly designed rooms and suites. Most of the rooms have huge windows, and have been arranged to make the most of them, even if a mezzanine floor has been added. The Tower Suites are especially impressive, with panoramic sea views, huge bay windows and two private balconies. There’s also a first class spa, and an impressive Sicilian restaurant.

For a Luxury Retreat

Baglio La Porta di San Gerardo

  • Dimora Delle Balze is a beautifully converted masseria in a pristine part of rural Sicily — it’s something like a gorgeous old stone farm complex with a semi-fortified wall and towers, plus ancient olive trees and orchards. It has just 12 rooms, and they’re very chicly decorated with contemporary fabrics and a few choice artefacts and plants, to make the most of the wonderful stone walls and other original features. There’s also the sort of pool you could expect to see in a tropical island resort. Remote, quiet and traditional, you’re not far from Syracuse and the coast. They have family suites too, and plenty of space for kids to enjoy themselves without bothering anyone.
  • If you’re coming to an island because you’d like to relax against sea views, as well as a rural backdrop, the Baglio La porta di San Gerardo might be more to your taste. There are only ten rooms and suites, all of them with wonderful views, and contemporary decor featuring plenty of natural materials. There’s also a huge pool and a wellness centre. Plus a fantastic restaurant with a fantastic view. Perfect if you want to relax. And affordable too.
  • Surrounded by orange groves, rolling farmland and peace-inducing views of rural Sicily, Donna Coraly has just five suites, carefully designed with both style and energy efficiency in mind. This ecologically friendly approach includes using a lot of their own produce on their tables, including their own cheese and olive oil, as well as fruit and vegetables. There’s a large pool, big gardens and a restaurant with a terrace.

For a Luxury Resort

Villa Neri Resort

  • If you’re here for a relaxed escape in idyllic surrounds you might like the look of the Verdura Golf & Spa Resort , especially if your tastes run to golf, spectacular views of the coast and stylish contemporary decor! This is a big resort, with 203 rooms and suites — some of which have their own private pools. It also has two of its own 18 hole golf courses, four restaurants, two pools, an exceptional spa with an impressive range of treatments, and a kid’s club — because this is a fantastic place to come and relax with, and without, your family.
  • The Villa Neri Resort is away from the coast, close to Mount Etna, in a serene, rural spot, where most windows offer views that feature nothing man made. Its 24 rooms and suites are huge, and chicly minimalist in their style, with features that range from in-room baths to hot tubs and private balconies and terraces. There’s a spa, which is the main draw for some visitors, an exceptionally large and elegant pool, and the food in the restaurant is excellent.

Our Favourite Luxury Hotels in Taormina

Hotel Villa Ducale

  • Taormina’s Hotel Metropole is a five star hotel complete with a Michelin starred restaurant, a chic bar, a rather glamorous hey-day-of-beach-holidays-facade with a matching pool, a luxurious spa and 23 rooms and suites decorated with contemporary Italian designer pieces, and some nice antiques. It’s romantic, the ocean views are quite something, and you’re close to the beach.
  • The Hotel Villa Ducale ticks a lot of boxes: it’s small and romantic and the decor is really charming, with a confidence in style and colour that would make many of us envious. There’s a lovely garden with a pool, and only 19 rooms and suites to share it between. But what really sets this hotel apart are its views, both towards Taormina and the ocean and towards Mt. Etna in the other direction. Some of the rooms have their own terrace, and there are larger ones to share, including one where candlelit suppers are served overlooking the bay. The hotel also operates a shuttle bus to the beach, which is only ten minutes away. The larger suites are suitable for families too.

For Family Friendly Luxury

Monaci delle Terre Nere

  • Perched on Etna’s slopes, Monaci delle Terre Nere is a deep pink villa which looks deceptively traditional as you approach, yet inside, stone walls, wooden beams and bare plaster mix with shiny glass, bright art works and bold contemporary lighting. The 19 rooms and suites are scattered throughout the grounds in converted farm buildings as well as some new-builds. Most Importantly it is comfy and not in the least pretentious, with plenty of space for your family to stretch out. And there is a cinema and excellent restaurant. Relax by the pool and gaze up at Mount Etna, or at the vineyards fanning out below you to the coast.

Some of the Best Value Luxury Hotels in Sicily

Hotel Villa Carlotta

  • Taormina’s Hotel Villa Carlotta is a sister to the Hotel Villa Ducale , down the hill from her, but still on the clifftop, closer to the bay and the Ionian Sea, with views of both the water and of Mount Etna. There are 29 rooms, suites and apartments here, and that’s the secret to the affordability of this villa, though all the rooms are beautifully decorated, with stone floors, opulent fabrics and delicate watercolours. The best rooms have sea views, but even the smallest have plenty of charm. There’s also a fantastic pool-with-a-view, and the sort of restaurant that’s so good it offers cooking classes. You’re only five minutes from the beach, but the hotel has a shuttle service, and you’re five minutes from the centre of town too. This is also an excellent choice for families, with four apartments, and several interconnecting rooms and suites.

Travel Guide

  • # 1 in Best Places to Visit in October 2024

Picture a tropical island – gentle waves spilling onto sandy shores, sunshine gleaming off a sparkling sea and volcanoes spurting steam in the distance. Add to that image: lush, rolling hills, topped by ruins from antiquity like those at the Valley of the Kings  near Luxor, Egypt . And then you need to imagine the rich tastes of fresh seafood, decadent pastas and desserts. This is Sicily – a balmy, laid-back refuge with an Italian mentality, especially seen in its cuisine and zeal for life. You'll find this large, triangular island, which happens to be the largest island in the Mediterranean, at the toe of Italy's boot, surrounded by the Tyrrhenian, Mediterranean and Ionian seas.

Historic towns and stunning architecture

Caught between Europe and Africa and full of stunning architecture, including some of Italy's best hotels, Sicily has a charm that’s all its own. Escape to a luxury beach resort overlooking the clear turquoise sea. Or head inland to uncover ancient landmarks and historic towns with magnificent views across mountains and brooding volcanoes. Then savour fresh Sicilian cuisine and unwind at your exclusive island escape. Or relax by the pool or in your spa hotel. Sicily continues to seduce travellers with its dazzling diversity of landscapes and cultural treasures.

Things to do

CULTURE From the Greeks and Romans to the Normans and Spanish, Sicily has seen a string of cultures come and go – and all have left their mark. Walk up to the ancient Temple of Concord. Uncover ruined Roman forts and theatres dotting the countryside. Or lose yourself in the old towns of Taormina or Palermo, with their medieval churches and historic squares lined with bright, bustling cafés.

BEACHES & WATER Sicily’s beaches are varied and beautiful. Bask on sun-soaked stretches of golden sand on the mainland, or stroll along the volcanic beaches of the Aeolian Islands. Sicily is also a wonderful place to get out on (or into) the water. You could take a private sailing tour of the smaller islands, or snorkel over submerged archaeological remains

FOOD & DRINK Sicilian cuisine is an intoxicating blend of east and west that celebrates the natural bounty of the island and its seas. Tuck into refreshing citrus salads, or try traditional Italian dishes with a spicy flair. Or you could dine on the renowned regional speciality, swordfish, washed down with fine, island-grown wines.

Top Tip from SLH

Head inland and explore. Take a guided trek into the foothills of Mount Etna or up the slopes of Gran Cretere for spectacular views across the island.

Booking.com is part of Booking Holdings Inc., the world leader in online travel and related services.

Verified reviews from real guests.

We have more than 70 million property reviews, all from real, verified guests .

How does it work?

It starts with a booking.

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

If you booked through us and want to leave a review, please sign in first.

Scopriamo alcune proposte in Sicilia.

Glamping Alcantara -Motta Camastra (CT)

Iuta Glamping & Farm –  Noto (SR)

Happy Glamping Madonie – Polizzi Generosa (PA)

Camping Rosamarina Lake  – Caccamo (PA)

Villarè Bubble Room (ME)
