Jon Batiste to embark on The Uneasy Tour in 2024, first North American headlining tour

LOS ANGELES —  Jon Batiste , the Grammy- and Oscar-winning musician and former bandleader for "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," will embark on his first North American headlining tour in support of his latest album. The expansive  "World Music Radio,"  featuring his signature rich blend of R&B, hip-hop, swing, jazz and pop, was released earlier this summer.

The tour news arrived Monday, on the heels of the  2024 Grammy nominations  announcement: Batiste is up for six Grammys, including album, song, and record of the year.

The Uneasy Tour: Purifying the Airwaves for the People will kick off Feb. 16 in Portland, Oregon, and take Batiste across the U.S. and Canada. The tour wraps in Miramar Beach, Florida, on April 27.

Along the way, he'll hit numerous cities including Seattle, San Francisco, Detroit, Philadelphia, New York and Atlanta.

"I'm into numbers, so: 20 theaters and 24 performances to bless the pivotal year 2024. For my first solo run I wanted to play in smaller venues and curate experiences that let me really feel the people while I play. Think of these 24 shows less as a tour and more as a series of 24 not to be missed experiences, each being one-of-a-kind," Batiste told The Associated Press in an exclusive statement. "We are designing these performances to be catalysts to bring people together, raise awareness for things I care about and inspire change in this country, and the world."

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

The goal, he says, is to experience his performances in "intimate, life-affirming presentations created to unite, uplift and inspire us all in this time of change and uncertainty," he explained.

How to get Jon Batiste tickets for Uneasy Tour

Presales begin Nov. 14 and tickets for the general public go on sale Nov. 17, both on Ticketmaster .

For those who can’t wait until next year for their Batiste: The multi-instrumentalist is the subject of a new documentary titled "American Symphony," which follows his journey to compose a symphony while his wife, writer Suleika Jaouad, undergoes cancer treatment. It will hit theaters on Nov. 24 and Netflix on Nov. 29.

I’m a fan from the first Cassette Tape!! Lol

I was attached since Bonafide and kept up with Jon up till now. I was happy to actually meet him back 10 years in Connecticut at one of his shows. I had mentioned how excellent his rendition of “Everybody Here Wants You” was. Jeff Buckley would be honored!!

I was so happy to be able to catch his show in ATL this Friday (the 7PM show). He started from way back with hits like “Simple Melody” on through to his latest two singles, “Understand” and “Priceless”. The crowd loved his remixes of his own music as well as touches of classic soul songs as an undercurrent to his soulful lyrics. He was personable and made several comments of how appreciative he was that his fan base has continued to hang with him for “20+ years”!

Most important to note is the difference in his voice. He obviously has matured physically, but in the best possible way. He’s maintained his beautiful falsetto, but it’s not the main event of his singing anymore. He can hit those highs as well as settle into some beautiful lows all while belting it out over the amps and drums. Similar to a fine vintage wine, his voice blends together quite nicely i think!!

Not to be forgotten were his band (a duo playing bass and drums) who seemed to know all his songs as well as him! They had their own swag but kept things tight. That made me smile because it seemed like everyone on stage thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Growing up, I had a girl band and hung around with my brother’s band. I just loved chilling, enjoying music and playing music for hours. Jon B’s Atlanta City Winery show felt like nostalgic good old times. Like an up scale jam session in a sense. I think this is because he is his music and you can’t help but be cool and relax and enjoy a show by a musical genius!

Hey SK Family

Well let start by saying I like most of Jon B's music.

The night started off arriving by 7pm as the ticket stated to do, for chances of not getting your assigned seat if to late, only to wait 2 hours for the concert to start.

The food was overpriced. The sound system was too loud, and at times muffled. All this for a 45 minute performance. The only thing I was happy about was that I lived in the city.

I still like Jon's music,but!!!!!...ummm

Thanks for reading

Jon B is a consummate artist, an accomplished musician and noted songwriter and producer with several gold and platinum records under his belt. His is a richly textured body of music, a testament to one man’s love for all things soul. Jon’s long-awaited new album will be released in February of 2012. Entitled “Comfortable Swagg,” it will feature Jon’s signature style known to his fans around the world with the first single hitting airwaves in February, entitled "Only One" . This album features DJ Quik on the sophisticated funky sounding track "Fill Your CUP". Its definitely a return to old familiar sounds as well as discovery of new ones…

His beginning was seasoned by early influences including Duran Duran, Inxs, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Babyface, Prince and Sade, he spent the summer after high school writing, producing and recording 40 incredible songs and began making his rounds to all major record labels. Within a few months, he’d met Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and his wife, Tracy Edmonds, who were interested in signing Jon to their label imprint, Edmonds Record Group (formerly Yab Yum).

The relationship between Jon and Edmonds Record Group immediately bore fruit. His debut album “Bonafide” went platinum and he was nominated by the Grammys for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for the single, “Someone to Love.” His sophomore effort “Cool Relax” also went platinum and earned him multiple Billboard Music Award nominations including Top R&B Artist, Top Hot R&B Single for “They Don’t Know/Are U Still Down,” Top Hot R&B Singles Artist and a Soul Train Music Award nomination for Best Male Single. "Are U Still Down" featuring the legendary Tupac Shakur collaborating with Jon in the studio, before his death in 96. .Jon also solidified his production sound with a collaboration with Jay Z and Coko (from SWV) featured on the "Hav Plenty sound track."

Continuing to produce his third album "Pleasures U like" featuring some of R&B and Hip Hop's heavy weights, Faith Evan's, Nas, Az, and Cuban Link, as well as the successful single "Don't Talk" which Jon wrote and produced himself. His appreciation for the music and the culture aloud him to have innovative idea's and express his influence in many genre's of musical styles, R&B, Hip Hop, Rock, Reggae/Dance Hall, and Jazz… following the versatile styling's of his previous album's. " I am not an artist who can be pinned down to one sound or style". "You can't put me in a box that I can't break myself out of, by just making the style of track that I'm vibing to and writing a great song to it, no limitations…" J.B. Jon later went on to write and produce records for Luther Vandross ( "Grown Thangs"), Toni Braxton ( "In the late of night" ), also songs for Gina Thompson, Color Me Badd, Az Yet, as well as remixing Michael Jackson's "You Are Not Alone".

"Stronger Everyday" Jon's forth release was another gem of an album full of amazing track's and collaboration's with Hip Hop legend's like Scarface , Old Dirty Bastard, and Bennie Man. Jon scored a top ten video on the U.K. MTV/ TRL Top Ten with the song "Everytime (remix featuring Beenie Man) Jon co produced with Just Blaze.

In 2008 he released "Helpless Romantic" Keeping the tradition alive of the classic R&B sound that captivates. This album was more self contained with few collaborations but atmospheric, romantic songwriting. this album was Jon getting back to the basic's of writing, producing, and singing. Being that this album was widely over looked due to the lack of promo/video or tour. Impressively enough Jon's loyal fan's have continued to support as Jon still made people bob their heads to the single "Oo so sexy" featuring Paul Wall . Now that he is settled in his mind, with his business affairs, his Wife of five years, a five year old Daughter, and his own label "Vibezelect Inc." Which he, his wife and a small team run. He has finely obtained the creative freedom that he always wanted…

Now that he is in the pilots seat in every aspect of his career, the hunger to deliver a fresh sounding thorough album is without question his main focus. This album sounds innovative in the way that Jon presses the creative envelope with track's like "GOIN DOWN" produced and co-written by ADONIS (best known for his hit's with Usher). This album has true diversity with dance tracks for the club and easy chill tracks for the bedroom. He is so excited to be back! Not only to come back to the people who wondered, where has he been? But to satisfy that inner calling, to express whats going on in his life. Who is Jon today? This album is a great way to get to know where this creative gentlemen is at mentally, romantically, and musically… "Comfortable Swagg" the newest release from Jon B. enjoy…..

While the world waits to see if/when/how Taylor Swift or Beyoncé will weigh in on the historic campaign to elect Kamala Harris as president, details are surfacing on the celebrity contingent that has committed to traveling to Chicago next week for the Democratic National Convention .

Related Stories

Kerry washington, mindy kaling among stars tapped to serve as dnc hosts, harris-walz campaign taps hollywood-loved designers sergio hudson, aurora james, thom browne and more for stylish swag.

Those visitors will have plenty of options for how and where to mix, mingle and commiserate about the state of U.S. politics at ancillary gatherings organized around official DNC activities. According to a third-party event directory posted online, there are well more than 100 events happening next week in Chicago with a roster of confirmed headliners that includes John Legend , Jon Stewart, Billy Porter, Joan Jett, Octavia Spencer, DJ D-Nice, Lil Jon and stars of RuPaul’s Drag Race .

Tongues have been wagging for weeks about which bold-faced names will be making the trek to the Midwest, even more so in the wake of July’s Republican National Convention that drew Amber Rose, Hulk Hogan, Jason Aldean, reality TV star Savannah Chrisley, Kid Rock, Dana White, Lee Greenwood and others. All eyes will be on the United Center stage to see how strategists deploy Hollywood elite to the main stage, particularly in an election year in which voters have repeatedly said that inflation, the economy and cost of living are the most pressing issues.

The Creative Coalition, led by Robin Bronk, has also confirmed details for a series of events being hosted by the nonprofit, nonpartisan social and public advocacy organization of the arts and entertainment community. Led by president Tim Daly and CEO Bronk, the organization confirmed that it had booked a delegation that includes Uma Thurman, Uzo Aduba, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Yvette Nicole Brown, Anthony Anderson, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Busy Philipps, Jon Cryer, David Cross, Yolonda Ross, Iain Armitage, Chris Witaske and Danai Gurira.

On Tuesday, Aug. 20, Creative Coalition will host a VIP welcome dinner at the Whitehall Hotel. The following morning will be an Empower Policy Luncheon hosted by the org and sponsored by Full Sail University at Palmer House Hotel. Described as a leadership luncheon, attendees are expected to be “C-suite and policy trailblazers from Fortune 500, entertainment, Silicon Valley and policy.” The following morning, the hotel will also hold The Case for Kindness, a reception hosted by the Creative Coalition and sponsored by Articulus Entertainment that is a “salute to groundbreakers, trailblazers” and leaders from various sectors and special interest groups.

Music is expected to be a big draw in the Windy City. Legend, who performed at the Lincoln Memorial after President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ inauguration in January 2021, is headlining a show at Salt Shed for billionaire Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Tuesday, Aug. 20. The night before, the Equality PAC will present a party featuring LGBTQ talent in Chicago’s iconic Boys Town that will feature RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Chad Michaels, Silky Nutmeg Ganache and Jackie Cox. Also on Monday, DJ D-Nice will hit the turntables at a celebration organized by members of the House Energy & Commerce Committee, and rapper Lil Jon will headline a Southern Soul party for Georgia’s State Democratic Party at PRYSM nightclub.

Per his rep, Billy Porter will appear and perform at a luncheon for veteran politico Nancy Pelosi in a showing that will mark a reunion for the two who last teamed for the Emmy winner’s June show during San Francisco Pride. LGBTQ+ Victory Institute’s DNC event, Victory at the DNC, will take place on Tuesday at theWIT Chicago and feature Pete Buttigieg, Zachary Quinto, Dana Goldberg, Wilson Cruz and the org’s president and CEO Annise Parker.

This story will be updated as more DNC details surface.

Aug. 15, 3:37 p.m. This story has been updated with Bryan Lourd, Donna Langley, Billy Ray, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Murphy expected to attend.

Matsuyama survives collapse to win FedEx Cup playoff opener; Koepka tops Rahm in LIV Golf

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Hideki Matsuyama lost a five-shot lead in four holes and responded with birdies on two of the toughest holes on the course to salvage an even-par 70 and a two-shot victory Sunday in the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

The start of the PGA Tour’s postseason had tense moments at the top of the leaderboard and on the bubble to determine the top 50 players in the FedEx Cup who advanced.

Staked to a five-shot lead at the start of the day, Matsuyama went 27 straight holes without a bogey and led by five when he rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt on the 11th.

And then it all came undone — a three-putt bogey on the 12th, a tee shot into the water on the par-3 14th and a scramble for bogey, two chips to reach the 15th green for a double bogey.

Just like that, he was one shot behind hard-charging Viktor Hovland, the defending FedEx Cup champion.

Hovland, however, took bogey from the bunker on the 17th hole and missed a 9-foot birdie chance on the 18th for a 66. He tied for second with Xander Schauffele, who played bogey-free in the stifling heat for a 63.

Matsuyama got onto the front of the green at the 17th from the left rough and made a birdie putt from just over 25 feet to stay one ahead and added another birdie on 18.

Matsuyama, who finished at 17-under 263, won for the second time this year. He shot 62 in the final round to win the Genesis Invitational at Riviera. Coming off a bronze medal at the Olympic, his performance except for that awful four-hole stretch was golden. He won $3.6 million and moved from No. 8 to No. 3 in the FedEx Cup.

It was quite a week for the Japanese star, who had to find a fill-in caddie and could only work with his coach over the phone. All of them were out to dinner in London on their way home from the Paris Olympics when someone stole their bag when they weren’t looking.

LIV Golf League

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — Brooks Koepka picked up his second LIV Golf League victory of the year when he shot 7-under 63 at The Greenbrier and beat Jon Rahm with a par on the first playoff hole.

Rahm, who lost a four-shot lead on the back nine at the Olympics two weeks ago, started the third and final round with a two-shot lead and closed with a 65. He birdied two of his last three holes to match Koepka at 19-under 191 and force a playoff.

In the playoff at the par-3 18th, Rahm went over the green and into the bunker, a tough shot in which one one foot was in the sand. He blasted out to about 25 feet, and his par putt to extend the playoff caught the edge of the cup.

Koepka also won LIV Golf Singapore this year. He picked up his fifth career victory since the Saudi-funded league began in June 2022.

Koepka’s four-man squad, Smash, won the team title by three shots.

United States Golf Association

CHASKA, Minn. — Jose Luis Ballester, a senior-to-be at Arizona State, became the first player from Spain to win the U.S. Amateur, fending off Iowa sophomore Noah Kent 2 up at Hazeltine in the 36-hole match on his 21st birthday.

Ballester, who was the only player in the top 10 of the world amateur ranking to reach the round of 16, took the lead on the second hole and never trailed. He joined Jon Rahm as the only players from Spain to win a USGA tournament. Rahm, who also played for the Sun Devils, won the U.S. Open in 2021.

Both finalists gained exemptions for the Masters and the U.S. Open next year, and Ballester also got a spot in the British Open.

Kent, from from Naples, Florida, entered the week as a long shot at No. 560 in the world amateur ranking.

LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour

IRVINE, Scotland — Lauren Coughlin pulled away with superb putting and shot 3-under 69 to win the Women’s Scottish Open on Sunday, her second LPGA title this summer, to secure a spot on the U.S. Solheim Cup team.

Coughlin, who won the CPKC Women’s Open in Canada three weeks ago, recovered from a pair of early bogeys to move ahead of Megan Khang on the front nine and Esther Henseleit of Germany on the back nine at Dundonald Links.

The 31-year-old American one-putted the final seven holes on a chilly day along the Ayrshire Coast. Coughlin finished at 15-under 273, four shots ahead of Henseleit (70). It was the second straight runner-up finish for Henseleit, coming off her Olympic silver medal in the Paris Games.

PGA Tour Champions

CALGARY, Alberta — Ken Tanigawa won the Rogers Charity Classic for his third career PGA Tour Champions victory, closing with a 6-under 64 to beat Richard Green by two shots.

Two strokes behind Green after matching the Canyon Meadows record with a career-best 61 on Saturday, the 56-year-old Tanigawa birdied the par-5 15th and 17th holes to pull away.

Tanigawa finished at 17-under 193. On Saturday, he made a hole-in-one in the 210-yard 16th with a 5-iron.

Green, who had a 62 on Saturday, bogeyed the par-3 14th and the par-4 17th in a 68. The 53-year-old Australian left-hander is winless on the 50-and-over tour.

Darren Clarke (65) and Jason Caron (67) tied for third at 14 under.

European Tour

PRAGUE — David Ravetto of France captured his first European Tour title when he closed with an 8-under 64 for a four-shot victory in the Czech Masters.

Ravetto started the final round one shot behind Jesper Svensson. He opened with three birdies in four holes at the PGA National Oaks Prague to set the tone for the day, and then made three more birdies before the turn.

Svensson was within one shot of Ravetto until a wild tee shot at the par-5 16th that led to double bogey. Ravetto made birdie, a three-shot swing that put him four shots in the clear with two to play.

Ravetto finished at 24-under 264. The victory moved him up 73 spots to No. 30 in the Race to Dubai. Svensson’s runner-up finish moved him to No. 3 as he closed in on a chance to get a PGA Tour card next year.

Korn Ferry Tour

JACKSON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Max McGreevy closed with a 3-under 69 and won the inaugural Magnit Championship for his second title this year on the Korn Ferry Tour.

McGreevy was tied with Will Chandler going into the final round at Metedeconk National. He picked up two early birdies to keep pace and played bogey-free the rest of the way.

Chandler was tied for the lead after a birdie on the par-3 fifth, but he hit a pair of bad drives that led to bogeys, had two more bogeys on the back nine and rallied with a pair of birdies when McGreevy already was too far ahead.

McGreevy closed with a 72 and tied for second with Ricky Castillo (67) and Tim Widing (69).

Jon Rahm is one of the biggest golf stars in the planet and his controversial move from the PGA to LIV Golf left everyone stunned back in December of 2023. People said that the money was the thing that attracted him and other golfers, as everyone knows that it is a Saudi-backed circuit.

With that said, it seems that his roots could come into play in order to maintain his status, at least that is what is being reported. Sources have said that the Spaniard might be regretting his move and is now thinking of going back to the PGA after only eight months.

It was a $500 million deal to abandon the PGA Tour according to sources and now an insider is claiming that the two-time major winner is already having second thoughts about his defection.

The leader of LIV Golf has spoken on the matter

Greg Norman, the CEO of the newly famed LIV Golf circuit has stated his thoughts on this report. "I am 100 percent positive that if Jon could give the money back to the Saudis and come back to the tour, he couldn't write the check fast enough," the unnamed source claimed.

During the second round of LIV Golf Greenbrier Saturday , the boss spoke loud and clear. "I read an article yesterday about how Jon is so unhappy here (LIV Golf) and that he wants to give back his money," Norman said via Golf Magic. "It's just not true."

But he was not done, as he explained that this is a 'laughable' situation. "You speak to Jon's general manager, it's like laughable. I just truly don't get it. I truly don't get the divide," he said and at least for now Jon Rahm is not going anywhere.

Betting pool tips Vuelta a España 2024 | We know Roglic, Almeida and Van Aert, but who are the hidden gems?

A fter the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France—both dominated by the ever-impressive Tadej Pogacar—it’s time for the third and final grand tour of the year: the Vuelta a España! As always, there are various betting pools and fantasy leagues you can join as a fan of cycling predictions. For those not ready to rest on their laurels after a summer full of intense sports action, IDLProCycling.com brings you ten interesting Vuelta picks!

Of course, you won’t find Joao Almeida, Primoz Roglic, Adam Yates, or Wout van Aert on this list, but there are still 172 other riders lining up for the start of the Vuelta. Who among them could be the dark horses, the ones to bring in those precious points? That’s the annual dilemma with dark horse picks, and this year is no different.

Roger Adria - Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe

For our first pick, we wanted to choose a rider whose team leader might just win the Vuelta for the fourth time. Of course, we’re talking about Primoz Roglic, who, after his withdrawal from the Tour de France, is eager for redemption in Spain. Representing Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, he’s their top contender, with climbers like Aleksandr Vlasov, Daniel Felipe Martinez, and Florian Lipowitz supporting him.

Roger Adria is also part of this strong lineup. The 26-year-old Spaniard—racing on home soil—is in his first year in the WorldTour, but he’s not someone to underestimate. Hailing from Barcelona, Adria can handle climbs well, has a strong punch, and is quick on the finish, as shown by his recent top finishes in the Vuelta a Burgos. He also competed in reduced-bunch sprints in the Tour de Suisse, Eschborn-Frankfurt, and the Tour of Oman, earning respectable places. The only question is whether he’ll have the freedom within Roglic’s team to sprint occasionally... If you’re playing in a betting pool where team points matter, this could be an added bonus—especially if Roglic wears the leader’s jersey!

Jon Aberasturi - Euskaltel-Euskadi

Next up is a veteran of the sport, Jon Aberasturi . The 35-year-old Spaniard has spent most of his career as a Continental rider, though he was part of the WorldTour peloton with Trek-Segafredo in 2022 and 2023. This year, he returned to his old stomping grounds at Euskaltel-Euskadi.

Among pool enthusiasts, Aberasturi has a bit of a cult following: a rider who often competes in the Vuelta and consistently finishes in respectable positions. Since 2018, he has achieved a top-20 result in the Vuelta 18 times, often earning valuable points in fantasy leagues. He’s rarely an expensive pick, and at the time of writing, he’s in good form, having finished twice in the top seven at the Vuelta a Burgos.

Pau Miquel - Equipo Kern Pharma

Sprint opportunities may be limited, but we’re saticking with the fast men for now. Equipo Kern Pharma arrives to the Gran Salida in Lisbon with a team of opportunists, and one of those is Pau Miquel . The 23-year-old Spaniard might actually be more of a hill specialist than a pure sprinter, but that’s exactly what makes him valuable in this Vuelta.

Why? Because flat sprints (stages that resemble a pancake in profile) are scarce in the Vuelta, so having solid climbing ability is essential in most sprints. And Miquel is well-suited for this. This year, he finished an impressive seventh in the challenging Circuit Franco Belge and took fourth in a stage of the Tour of the Basque Country. Definitely one to watch!

Max Poole - dsm-firmenich PostNL

He is not really unknown anymore, but with a rider like Max Poole ( dsm-firmenich PostNL), you might just make a difference in your fantasy team. After what was essentially a spring full of setbacks (and injuries), the 21-year-old Brit made an immediate impact upon his return. He finished an impressive second in the overall classification at the Vuelta a Burgos, just behind Sepp Kuss.

Poole is being positioned by his team as a leader for the general classification. It’s still uncertain how he’ll handle a three-week race after his injury—though he does have some experience, having ridden the Vuelta last year—but his talent is undeniable. Plus, with Poole, you can also rake in points for the youth classification!

Mathias Vacek - Lidl-Trek

Sticking with the young talent, let's talk about Mathias Vacek , the Czech rising star from Lidl-Trek. Vacek is making his debut in a grand tour, and rightfully so, as he’s already proven himself this year as a true all-rounder (and as Thibau Nys’s right-hand man) with solid climbing skills.

Vacek also has a very strong time trial and can finish fast. In short, he’s a versatile rider who will likely have the freedom to sneak into breakaways from time to time. What more could you ask for?

Pelayo Sanchez - Movistar

In the Giro d’Italia, Pelayo Sanchez was undoubtedly one of the breakout (baroudeur) stars. The born attacker managed to snag a stage win from a breakaway and later finished second in another stage. As you can guess, the Southern European is a pure attacker.

If we are to believe Thomas De Gendt—who knows the ropes by now—there are about ten opportunities for breakaways in this Vuelta. Add to that the fact that Sanchez is racing on home soil, and you might want to consider adding him to your team right away! Since the Tour de Suisse and the Spanish Championship (both in June), the 24-year-old climber and puncher hasn’t raced, so his form is a bit of a mystery. But if he’s in good shape, he’s definitely one to note!

Jhonatan Narvaez - INEOS Grenadiers

You might not be considered a true dark horse anymore if you manage to beat Tadej Pogacar in a sprint in the opening stages of the Giro d’Italia. Still, Jhonatan Narvaez is worth mentioning as a gem for your Vuelta fantasy team, especially since there will be plenty of hilly stages and opportunities for breakaways.

On the INEOS Grenadiers team, where Thymen Arensman and Carlos Rodriguez will be the leaders for the general classification, the South American will likely have some freedom to chase his own opportunities, just as he did so successfully in the Giro. And Narvaez is definitely up for the challenge, especially given his current form—he recently finished a strong fifth in the Clasica San Sebastian. He could also be a valuable addition to your team if you’re aiming for points in the points classification.

Cristian Rodríguez - Arkéa - B&B Hotels

Riders who latch onto breakaways and then gradually climb up the rankings through early attacks often don't win popularity contests. Think of Louis Meintjes (Intermarché-Wanty) and Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), who have repeatedly made the top ten in grand tours this way. For this Vuelta a España, we’d like to nominate Cristian Rodríguez (Arkéa - B&B Hotels) for that 'award,' even though he didn’t use this strategy in the Tour.

In La Grande Boucle , aside from his strong performance in stage two, we might have expected a bit more from Rodríguez. However, in 'his' Spain, he’ll have another chance to prove himself. He can definitely latch onto breakaways, though that often results in finishes between 15th and 20th on the day. But Rodríguez, like the rest of his team, knows what he needs to do: score points, which for this excellent climber means going on the offensive in the mountains and securing a place in the GC. Last year, he finished 13th in the Vuelta, and this season, he’s already been competitive in tough races like the Tours of Oman, Catalonia, Romandie, and Tirreno-Adriatico. So, he’s certainly capable!

Arjen Livyns - Lotto-Dstny

The penultimate rider in our ten-man list is a grand tour debutant. We’re talking about Arjen Livyns , the 29-year-old Belgian from Lotto-Dstny. In the team announcement, he was highlighted as the 'designated sprinter.' Labeling Livyns as a pure sprinter might be a bit of a stretch, but he’s definitely quick.

Livyns will have his chances in the few bunch sprints, but he’s also capable of handling some climbs. We should keep in mind that grand tour racing is new territory for the small Flemish rider, who recently finished in the top six twice in the Sibiu Tour. Earlier this year, he also took an impressive eighth place in the Muscat Classic, so we shouldn’t rule out top-twenty finishes in the Vuelta—whether from a sprint or a breakaway.

William Junior Lecerf - Soudal Quick-Step (T-Rex Quick-Step)

The final spot on our list goes to one of the youngest participants this year, William Junior Lecerf of Soudal Quick-Step, the team competing in the Vuelta under the name T-Rex Quick-Step. The 21-year-old Belgian was one of the early surprises of the year, finishing a remarkable second behind Simon Yates in the AlUla Tour. Shortly after, he had an impressive Tour of Rwanda, including a stage win and several top finishes.

Within T-Rex Quick-Step, Mikel Landa is the team leader for the general classification, but the rest of the team will also have opportunities for stage success. In the hilly stages, we can certainly expect a lot from the lightweight Lecerf, although it remains to be seen how he’ll handle the pressure of such a big race...
