Moneybagg Yo Heads to Arenas for ‘Larger Than Life’ Tour

  • By Tomás Mier

Moneybagg Yo will hit the road later this summer, announcing a the 23-date run in support of his latest mixtape, Hard to Love .

Moneybagg will begin the tour in Orlando on Aug. 3, before stopping in cities such as New York City, Nashville, Seattle, and Oakland. He’ll wrap his tour on Sept. 30 in his native Memphis.

“Going around the world putting on for my hood‼️” he wrote on Instagram sharing the tour art, which sees him as a giant sitting contemplative on a skyscraper.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by SPEAK (@moneybaggyo)

Moneybagg Yo will bring along five openers with him: Finesse2Tymes, Sexyy Red, Luh Tyler, Big Boogie, and YTB Fatt. “LETS GOOOO,” commented Boogie on Moneybagg’s post. Tickets for the show are set to go on sale on June 13.

“ Hard To Love  feels limited compared to his most recent work,” read a Rolling Stone review of the project. “At a swollen 20 songs and 55 minutes, the sameness of its subject matter and the lack of diversity in its production causes the music to lose impact and energy, despite the hard-nosed honesty of Bagg’s lyrics.”

About Moneybagg Yo

Demario White B/K/A Moneybagg Yo was born on September 3, 1991, in South Memphis, Tennessee. The oldest of three siblings Moneybagg wore tired of seeing his mom struggle to feed him and his sisters, so he dropped out of High School and began running the streets with hopes to support and provide for his family.

During idle time Moneybagg Yo and his best friend Elo began freestyle fun, ELO would tell Moneybagg Yo he truly thought Baggs had what it takes to become a rap star.

In 2015 ELO’s vision came true when Moneybagg Yo dropped Federal, a mixtape that set Memphis and Tennessee’s surrounding areas ablaze. But It wasn’t until his best friend ELO was fatally gunned down in 2015 that Moneybagg Yo began to take rap music seriously. During these painful times, Moneybagg Yo penned and released a CD that wore heavy on the hearts of South and North Memphis. The cd was to be titled “ELO” (Everybody Lives On) a tribute to (his Best-friend) the late ELO.

To accompany the release, Bagg shared the imaginative video for “Where Ya Bih @.” In the visual directed by whipalo, Bagg pays great homage to the 2005 Oscar-winning film, Hustle & Flow . The parallels between Bagg and the main character are uncanny as the iconic movie follows the dramatic life of a hustler turned rapper named DJay (originally played by Terrence Howard), who’s also a native Memphian.

Like Bagg, DJay’s an overachiever with a stop-at-nothing approach and a crystal-clear vision for his success, and in the video Bagg seamlessly taps into that role as he playfully paints the picture of his comparable drive and passion.

The mixtape, Bagg’s first since 2021’s  A Gangsta’s Pain , was preceded by a lengthy letter posted to his Instagram account. “I gained and lost more than I ever thought I would,” Bagg wrote, “and had no other safe outlet for all the emotions and dark thoughts that came wit that other than making music.”

That sort of to-the-bone honesty is the defining feature of  Hard To Love . Moneybagg shared various singles including “Quickie,” “Motion God,” “On Wat U On,” his acclaimed collaboration with label mate,  GloRilla , and most recently “Ocean Spray.”

Alongside his new singles this year he also made an appearance on YTB Fatt's song "Shot Off Bumbo." Alongside joining the tour YTB Fatt appears on two songs from Moneybagg Yo's new mixtape. Swifties who want to snag tickets to Taylor Swift’s colossal Eras Tour know the experience won’t come cheap.

This year, the billionaire will only visit three U.S. cities – Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis – and prices for the in-demand shows are astronomical . For the Oct. 18 show in Miami, for example, cost of a single ticket ranged between $1,615 and $8,524 on StubHub.com as of Wednesday afternoon.

So, how else can fans see one of the world’s biggest singers? Go abroad .

In the past 30 days, searches for ‘Taylor Swift Europe tour 2024 tickets’ have increased by 300% in the U.S., indicating that some people are ready to take a long-haul flight to see the wildly popular artist live, according to travel website Islands.com .

Concert-goers who head to Europe for their Swift experience may actually save more money in the long-run . Not only are ticket prices across the pond cheaper, but many European cities, like Warsaw and Lisbon, are also budget-friendly, offering inexpensive food and lodging.

Was the travel worth it? Beyoncé and Taylor Swift's summer concerts drew fans from afar

To determine the most affordable Eras Tour stops, Islands.com researchers compared the cost of a two-night trip, including one cheap ticket on StubHub.com, two nights at a four-star hotel, six inexpensive meals, two five-mile taxi rides, and one domestic beer. However, researchers didn’t account for airline tickets or concert merchandise.

With safety at the top of travelers' minds, the researchers also factored in the city’s safety rating out of 100.

To stay extra safe, the State Department encourages travelers to register with the U.S. embassy in the country they're visiting any time they travel abroad. That can be done at step.state.gov .

Lisa Stansfield performing at the Northern music awards at the Albert Hall in Manchester.

Northern music awards winners call for more help for region’s emerging talents

Lisa Stansfield says difficulties young people face in getting a start are ‘disgusting’, at inaugural ceremony in Manchester

More should be done to help talented emerging musicians from the north of England, top artists have said at the inaugural Northern music awards in Manchester.

The awards, run by the music therapy charity Nordoff and Robbins, took place in a packed Albert Hall, with winners including the former One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson – who beat Sam Fender and Self Esteem to pick up artist of the year – the Courteeners, Aitch and Mel C.

Awards were presented by New Order, the former footballer Gary Neville and the mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

Speaking to the Guardian before picking up the northern icon award on Tuesday evening, the Rochdale singer and songwriter Lisa Stansfield said it was “disgusting” how hard the government had made it for young people to get a start in the music industry.

Highlighting the economic climate and the lack of dedicated support for the arts, Stansfield said: “There aren’t enough platforms for young musicians. It’s made very, very difficult by this government for them to do anything. They don’t have any money and they’re being charged to go everywhere to do gigs. It’s disgusting really. And this government don’t care.

“It’s shit. Do you know what I hate that people say? People who have choices always say everybody has a choice, and it’s disgusting because there are a lot of people who don’t have any choice whatsoever. And all they need is a tiny little push, that’s all they need.”

Lily Fontaine from the band English Teacher performing on stage at the awards.

Research earlier this year found half of the UK’s most streamed artists of all time were from London , while last year was the ninth in a row that the prestigious Mercury prize was given to a London artist. The jazz quintet Ezra Collective, who won the award with their album Where I’m Meant to Be, said more funding outside London would help diversify the prize.

The Leeds band English Teacher, who won newcomer of the year at the awards, agreed. They said northern artists were having to spend a lot of time going back and forth to London for gigs and to make connections in the industry.

“Making our way up the industry ladder in the past few years I think there is definitely a sense of [it being London-centric], particularly in attitudes and where the attention is directed,” said guitarist Lewis Whiting.

His band’s frontwoman, Lily Fontaine, added that music charities had helped take them from their formation in 2020 to releasing their debut album earlier this month , but the charities consistently struggled for funding.

She also highlighted BBC Introducing, a nationwide local radio programme dedicated to unearthing new music, as a key factor in the band’s rise. The BBC announced last year it would be cutting the number of local programmes from 32 to 20 as part of cost-saving measures.

Fontaine said: “I think that was a shame because I think that having a lot of industry people in the regional areas really helps – it really helped us. I think filling those gaps, those elements that have been taken away, with something else would be great.”

Tim Burgess after winning his award

The Charlatans frontman, Tim Burgess, who was presented with the 2024 Northern music award, said tackling UK-wide issues, such as better pay for musicians, would help lift all artists.

“We need to look at it and try to make sure there’s equality,” he said.

Liam Fray, of the Courteeners, said it was “probably inevitable” that so many popular artists are from the capital because “it’s expected that you would go to London to make it”.

But his home city of Manchester was thriving musically, he said, and there was a sense of optimism in the north. “What I have noticed in the last couple of years is the amount of bands moving to Manchester – I’ve got friends who are producers and they can’t move for work. Not Mancunian bands, bands from everywhere else, so that’s exciting.”
