Acadia National Park

Sweeping mountain views, rugged ocean scenery and abundant wildlife all contribute to the splendor that is Acadia National Park .  The heart and soul of Acadia is Mount Desert Island , a short drive from the airport.  The island is a place with scenic pink-granite mountains, deep glacial ponds, cobblestone beaches and ocean side cliffs. Bald eagles, ospreys and peregrine falcons patrol the skies while seals, porpoises and seabirds fish the cold waters of Frenchman Bay . Added to the hiking is a morning of sea kayaking, and of course, a lobster dinner!  We are going to experience Acadia in its entirety on our Acadia National Park hiking tour.

See our detailed itinerary here, or contact us for more information! Timberline Adventures offers guided hike and bike tours across the U.S. and Canada, and our experts across the country are ready to guide you in your outdoor experience.

Introduce Yourself To Maine With a Hike

To hike in Maine is to introduce yourself to our state, one step at a time. You breathe in the salt as you round a corner in Acadia National Park, or hoist yourself up a steep pitch on a mountain in western Maine. Everything is slow, deliberate and linked with the land.

In State & National Parks

There are great hikes throughout Maine, on federal lands like Acadia, in state parks such as Mt. Blue and along the East Coast’s longest walk, the Appalachian Trail.

Baxter State Park

With 215 miles of hiking trails and Maine’s tallest mountain (Katahdin), there is stunning foliage to witness in this wild wonderland. A choose-your-adventure-type place, there are options for easy day hikes in addition to the more adventurous route of summiting Katahdin. A short day hike option to consider is Horse Mountain. From the park's north gate, the Horse Mountain trailhead is 0.6 mile from the gatehouse. The trail is steep but within 1.2 miles, you will see a sign for a spur trail to the viewpoint where you will have a birds-eye view of Grand Lake Matagamon.

Camden Hills State Park

Sweeping views at this park atop Mt. Battie are made even more spectacular with the rich colors of fall foliage. A popular trail to enjoy the summit and see Camden Harbor is the Nature Trail and then left onto the Tablelands Trail to the top of Mt. Battie.

Acadia National Park

Numerous summits, easy day hikes and craggy coastlines make Maine’s “crown jewel of the North Atlantic coast” a gorgeous place to witness foliage on a hike. There are many hikes, ranging from easy walks to the very challenging Beehive – where at certain points, you climb the mountain using iron rungs.

Kids love hiking , and Maine has plenty of paths perfect for them. Some are strolls, and others are as tough and demanding as anything their parents might enjoy.

In the Mountains

Hiking Maine mountains adds an extra dimension. Katahdin is Maine’s tallest peak — and one of the hardest. But the state has plenty of others that are fun and easier on the feet and nerves. For an even greater challenge, try Maine’s many rock-climbing routes , which range from granite walls over the Atlantic to hidden granite stashes elsewhere in the state.

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument provides over 87,000 acres of mountain and forestland for the serious hiker. There are many trails to enjoy like these in the south section of the monument, like Deasey Mountain – a challenging 10-mile hike where you get to ford a stream. Or head to the north section where there are reservable campsites and huts.

Maine Trail Finder provides a detailed list of Maine Hikes and hiking trails.

Learn About Our Private Trips

  • Shuttle: 90 min
  • Hiking Distance: 7.7 mi
  • Elevation Gain/loss: 500 ft

Our adventure begins with pickup from your hotel in Bangor, ME and a short drive to the visitors center in Acadia, where we will board the Island Explorer shuttle and enjoy a short but scenic ride to Sand Beach. We will begin our inaugural trek on rocky terrain descending toward the Great Head of Acadia. The views are unparalleled and provide sweeping panoramas of the Gulf of Maine and surrounding peaks. As we continue on, we will make our way through pink granite cliffs and Birch forests looping back to the trailhead. From here, we will head south along the coast toward Thunder Hole and Otter Cliff, one of the most stunning overlooks along the Atlantic. Your guide will prepare a tasty trail lunch as we pause to take in the breathtaking views and watch for marine wildlife.

After lunch we will embark on a last hike of the day to Jordan Pond. One of the most iconic hikes in the park, this glacially carved lake is surrounded by lush green mountains and is a perfect cap off to the day. We will enjoy a short drive to our lodging in Bar Harbor, get cleaned up and meet for a delicious, New England dinner.

  • Shuttle time: 30 Min
  • Hiking Distance: 4.3+ miles
  • Elevation Gain/Loss: 1885 ft

Today we embark on a summit hike to the top of one (and possibly two) of Acadia’s most iconic mountains, with sweeping vistas of coastal islands, Bar Harbor proper, spruce forests and dramatic granite cliffs. Today’s hike is surrounded by deep coastal forests and stunning panoramas of Acadia National Park. We will take as much time as we’d like on the summit as your guide prepares a picnic lunch. After lunch we will loop back to our starting point and – if time allows – visit one of Bar Harbor’s many museums or enjoy a beach walk along the coast.

  • Ferry: 45 Min
  • Shuttle: 50 min
  • Hiking Distance: 3.15+ mi
  • Elevation Gain/loss: 880 ft

Our hike today takes us to the exciting Schoodic Peninsula. We will enjoy a short ferry from Bar Harbor east across Winter Harbor to reach our destination. From here, we begin our hike from the coast up to Schoodic Head, providing many overlooks of the stunning surf along the Atlantic Coast, and a great view of Little Moose Island. We will stop to savor the view, have a tasty trail lunch and loop back, crossing over the “Anvil” and Blueberry Hill along the way. Post hike, we will hop back on the ferry, then make our way back to Bar Harbor, making a few more stops along the way at worthwhile viewpoints.

  • Shuttle: 1 hour
  • Hiking Distance: 3.35+ mi
  • Elevation Gain/loss: 1000ft

Today we will begin with a scenic shuttle toward Bass Harbor on the quieter southwest side of Mount Desert Island, stopping about halfway for a hike up to Beech Mountain. Our loop ascent starts out fairly level, then climbs quickly up the slopes of the peak for well-deserved views. After a snack we will zig-zag back down the other side of the mountain to our vehicle. Continuing on, we will make our way to Bass Harbor. During our visit here, we will take a walk along the coast and, if parking allows, explore a local lighthouse. After a packed full morning and early afternoon, we will have a last lunch together, and your Guide will transport you back to Bangor, ME for the conclusion of our tour.

Please Note : We always do everything in our power to follow the set itinerary, however it can change occasionally based on temporary access restrictions, weather, lodging/campground availability, guest ability/injury, natural events like fires and flooding, and other potential causes. Normal terms and conditions apply to trips with itinerary changes.

The Acadia Summits to Ocean trip was AMAZING. It was a great blend of hiking rugged terrain & beautiful views. The food prepared by our guide, Lindsey was AWESOME! Highly recommend this trip. If you are thinking about it...DO IT!

We planned a wonderful hiking experience with Wildland Trekking in Acadia National Park. Our base Hotel location was Bar Harbor Inn, in Maine which is picture perfect for a family summer vacation. Our 21 yr old boys were all in for an action packed vaca before senior year of college began the day after we returned home. The Wildland Trekking company takes you on hikes, plans the week, the dinners, light lunch and transportation as well as the tips and tricks to avoid the crowds each day to hike. An example is one Loop hike up high, I noticed we went right, while others went left to hike. Our come around the corner moment was shockingly beautiful with view and elevation, if you went the tourist way – there was no surprise! We were well paced and not rushed. I feel we saw it all, even thought the map will tell a different story. That said, we covered many locations in the park – lakes, mountains, beaches, rocks, and story filled moments to last a lifetime. The week was planned out well with long hikes, elevation hikes and degrees of difficulty (sorry to scare you here) which I never thought I could do. But I did. Our guide made us feel accomplished and great about our hiking adventures and how we did it. Like climbing a rock scramble 1700 ft to the top of Cadillac Mountain. I thought I could do anything that day. I will not give it away as to the hikes, but they are different, exciting, and cover all types of the area. You will be challenged, and it is unlike anything I have ever done. Did I mention, NO Bears. Relaxed and fun. The Bar harbor area is just a nice small town in Acadia. Touristy, for sure. But delicious food at the restaurants, great stores to look through ad buy clothing, trinkets and cool stuff – your in the national Park so great souvenirs. The Bar Harbor Inn is spectacular. Why – old world nice!! great beds, quiet, respectful, great gardens, good food, cookies at 4pm, fire and smores at 7pm. Nice people run it! The Gettys restaurant has good food and drink. If you need hiking shoes and clothing due to cool weather, it is all downtown. Great places to hang out too. We need to go back for many experiences missed due to time. We did take the ferry, they also have a big ship for sunsets, and whale watching. I highly recommend a guided tour. If you have never checked it out, look at Wildland Trekking across the USA for trips. By the way, we did Yellowstone with them. – Awesome.

More amazing than we expected.

This experience by far exceeded our expectations. acadia is beautiful, the hikes were both challenging and unforgettable, and it was the trip of a lifetime for our family of 4. Our boys were 21 at time of travel and said it was a vacation they will never forget.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

 claudia and donny.

My husband and I experienced a wonderful raft trip guided by Randy down the Green and Colorado Rivers. It was a family trip with varied ages and needs, including an eighty-year-old.  Randy was not only a highly effective people person, taking care of varied personal needs and issues, but he was a very experienced River navigator.  The water was very high that Spring, but Randy got both rafts past the challenges at the Confluence safely. The whole family treasures the experiences from our rafting trip!  He was also a great cook and dynamic storyteller around the campfire at night.  I recommend him highly as a guide and naturalist!

- Claudia Oakes

Jen and Zack

We recently had the pleasure of booking a guided hiking trip with Maine Guide Company and we cannot recommend them enough! From start to finish, the experience was top-notch. The booking process was easy and Randy was incredibly helpful in answering all of my questions.

On the day of the trip, Randy was knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about the outdoors. He provided us with in-depth information about the wildlife and nature in the area. We felt safe and comfortable throughout the entire trip, and Randy was always willing to go above and beyond to ensure that we had the best experience possible.

Overall, I would highly recommend Maine Guide Company to anyone looking for an unforgettable outdoor adventure in Maine. I was impressed with Randy's knowledge, excellent customer service, and commitment to safety. I can't wait to book another trip with them in the future!

Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Acadia National Park Hiking Tour Details

Overview for acadia national park hiking tour.

Spend six days exploring New England’s beautiful Acadia National Park on this guided hiking tour. Your expert guides will take you on the best trails the park has to offer, from challenging mountain trails to scenic beaches along the coastline.

You’ll be amazed by the difference between the charming coastal town of Bar Harbor and the scenic granite mountains of Acadia. During this tour, you’ll be climbing Dorr, Cadillac, Penobscot, and Gorham Mountains. Then, take to the water for a sea kayaking where you’ll explore remote bays in protected coastal waters. After your daily adventures, you’ll be returning to Bar Harbor to enjoy the famous New England hospitality (and lobster rolls!). The Hiking Tour in Acadia National Park is unforgettable each step of the way.

Itinerary for Acadia National Park Hiking Tour

Arrive in acadia national park.

Meet the group early at the Bangor airport. You’ll have breakfast and then make the hour drive to Acadia National Park.

You’ll start your hike along a carriage road to Witch Hole Pond. In the afternoon you’ll be hiking the Sieur de Monts Springs area where you’ll discover mountain springs, plank bridges, and beautiful views. After the hike, you’ll check-in at the hotel in Bar Harbor.

Hike up Dorr Mountain

Start your day with a stroll through the harbor and a short walk along the Bar Harbor shore path. Then you’ll head back to the park and start your strenuous hike up Dorr Mountain. The scenery will be spectacular from the top, as well as on your descent as you walk through the gorge between Dorr and Cadillac.

Cadillac Mountain Hike

Your hike today will be up Cadillac Mountain. As you climb, the odds are good that you’ll see wildlife, especially the birds of prey that frequent Eagles Crag.

On the way back you’ll take a lunch break at Featherbed pond before returning to Bar Harbor.

Sea Kayaking Adventure

This may be a hiking tour of the mountains, but no trip to New England is complete without getting out on the water! Today you’ll go on a sea kayaking excursion. There is no experience required as you’ll receive instruction and will be kayaking on the protected western side of Acadia.

The areas of Blue Hill Bay or Western Bay are less busy and offer a great chance to paddle in a remote area that is away from the open ocean. In the afternoon you can explore charming Bar Harbor, relax at the hotel, or wander a trail on your own.

Penobscot Mountain Hiking

Your hike today will begin from Jordon Pond House where you’ll pick up the trail to climb Penobscot Mountain. The climb is steep and offers beautiful views of the Cranberry Isles, a smattering of islands in the deep blue sea.

Reward yourself with a snack at Jordon Pond House on your way back into town.

Climb the Beehive and Gorham Mountain

Your last day already! Take the trail from Sand Beach and start the challenging hike up the Beehive. The track gets so steep that certain points have iron rungs to help your ascent. The views from the top are fantastic, especially in the fall when the trees are deep red and golden.

After this thrilling climb, you’ll walk over Gorham Mountain, and then loop back to Sand Beach. You’ll have time for a final lunch by the sea before returning to Bangor.

Where is Maine?

Maine is the northeasternmost state in the US, located in a region known as New England. Maine is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the state of New Hampshire to the west, as well as parts of Canada to the north, namely New Brunswick and Quebec.

How to get to Maine

Traveling to Maine is relatively easy with a range of options, including driving, catching a flight, or taking public transport in the form of a bus or train. Ferries are available to travel from the mainland to a number of islands off the coast.

Getting around Maine

There are a handful of ways to travel around Maine, from driving, using public transport or rideshare, or catching a flight. You just need to choose the one to suit your needs!

Maine has an efficient and reliable public transport system with bus and train networks that service most cities and regions in the state.

If short on time, you can catch a flight between cities in Maine, but driving will give you a better chance of seeing more of Maine's natural beauty.

What's the weather like in Maine?

The weather in Maine is dictated by which time of year you visit. Winters are typically cold and icy, especially in the northern parts of the state, where hearty snowfall benefits Maine's many ski mountains.

Summers are warm, sunny and pleasant but can still get fairly cool at night, especially in coastal regions. Packing layers will help fight off any chilly coastal breezes.

What do I pack for Maine?

Packing for Maine largely depends on what time of the year you're traveling in and which region of the state you're staying in.

If you're sticking to the coastal areas of Maine, the temperatures are often cooler (even in summer), so you should always pack appropriate layers, like a good sweater and long pants.

The rest of Maine experiences fairly normal seasons. You can pack dresses, shorts, and t-shirts for summer and warm layers for the colder seasons.

If you plan on walking or hiking, sensible footwear is a must. Maine is known for its natural beauty and expansive national parks, but the terrain can be quite rugged, so you'll be thankful for a good pair of shoes.

When is the best time to visit Maine?

The best time to visit Maine is between May and October, when the temperatures are warmer and the weather is nice enough to participate in outdoor activities such as cycling and hiking.

September and October are the most popular months for leaf peppers as fall foliage will be in full swing, setting the deciduous forests ablaze in shades of red, orange and gold. Due to an influx of visitors, this can be an especially busy time, and you'll want to book accommodation early.

Is Maine safe?

Maine is considered one of the safest states in the US.

This is mainly due to a strong community spirit and a smaller population than in other states. With low crime rates and quality infrastructure, you can safely assume you'll be fine traveling around the state.

Crime can still occur, so it's best always to be aware of your surroundings. Avoid traveling alone (especially at night), and stick to well-populated areas you feel comfortable in.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Western Maine Hut Hike

Western Maine Hut Hike

European-style hiking through Maine's western mountains

Trip Details

Hiking trip summary.

After over 30 years of guiding hiking and walking trips in some of Europe’s most beautiful areas, we are excited to be offering a hut-to-hut experience right here in our own backyard.

This 8-day trip affords the opportunity of experiencing two of Maine’s premier wilderness areas, with accommodations provided by two outstanding outdoor organizations, the  Appalachian Mountain Club  and  Maine Huts and Trails .

Our first few days of hiking will be spent in the Moosehead Lake Region, staying in the AMC lodges, followed by hiking between three of the  Maine Huts and Trails’  newly-constructed huts. Both areas are regions of old-growth forests, high Appalachian peaks, glimmering secluded lakes, and ancient Native American waterways. From the splendid Gulf Hagas, the “Grand Canyon of the East,” to the stately 4,000-footers of Bigelow, Sugarloaf, and Crocker, we’ll hike sections of the storied Appalachian Trail (AT), canoe the Dead River, and end our trip in the warmth and comfort of backcountry lodges and huts that are so uniquely “Maine.”

September is a dynamic time of year in the Maine woods. This is the fall migration period, and we can expect to see hawks, as well as migrating shorebirds and songbirds (warblers, vireos, thrushes, and sparrows). Fall foliage is beginning, with maples, ash, beech, and birches exhibiting changes in color. This season signals the beginning of the moose rut. An experienced moose caller, Ron has a good chance of getting us in close proximity to these amazing animals.

For those who have been curious about European-style hut-to-hut hiking, this trip is a great introduction. And for those who have hiked hut-to-hut in Europe, this trip offers a familiar experience closer home.

Important Update:  Our Western Maine Hut trip is temporarily on hold. For reasons, including COVID,  Maine Huts and Trails huts have been closed. They are planning a partial reopening this winter, but have not yet announced plans for the summer/fall of 2022. As we learn more, we will update our information so please check back!

Day 1 : Portland, Maine Jetport – transfer to AMC Hut: After a meeting as a group at the Portland Jetport, we will travel to Gorman Chairback Lodge, located in the heart of Maine’s 100-Mile Wilderness. The lodge was originally built as a private camp in 1867 and later used as a traditional Maine Sporting Camp. The  Appalachian Mountain Club  (AMC) has renovated the lodge as part of their Maine Woods Initiative Project, which protects 100,000 acres of land, including part of the 100-mile Wilderness along the AT.

The AMC is the nation’s oldest outdoor recreation organization and its continuing mission is to “promote the protection, enjoyment, and the understanding of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region.” All of the AMC huts and lodges are models for environmentalism, education, and stewardship, and Gorman Chairback Lodge is a shining example.

After settling in, we’ll take a walk along some of the lodge’s own trails and hopefully spot a moose. Welcome dinner.

Day 2 : Day Hike to Third Mountain: After a hearty breakfast, we’ll set off on a day hike. Departing the lodge, we’ll head to Third Mountain Trail as it climbs to meet the Appalachian Trail and Chairback Ridge. We will likely cross paths with AT “Thru-Hikers” trying to reach Mount Katahdin and the end of their 2,200-mile journey. There are a few hiking options for today, and the weather will be a determining factor in making our plan. Cabins with shared facilities. Dinner, breakfast, and lunch included.

Day 3 : Gulf Hagas to AMC Hut: Today we set off for Little Lyford Lodge. We’ll follow Henderson Brook Trail as it descends past a series of small waterfalls and pools before it joins the AT. Crossing the Pleasant River, normally a shallow but fast-moving river, we’ll hike through the beautiful old-growth pine stand of the Hermitage before starting on the Gulf Hagas Rim Trail.

Gulf Hagas, known as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” is a stunning 4-mile gorge with steep, narrow slate walls. Dropping over 400 feet in four miles, the river has created a dazzling series of waterfalls, pools, and chutes. We’ll have great views from the rim before reaching the Head of the Gulf Trail and continuing on to the Little Lyford Lodge. Bunkrooms with shared facilities. Dinner, breakfast, and lunch included.

Day 4 : Morning Hike – transfer Maine Huts and Trails: We have a few options today for a morning hike, or you may also decide to linger over coffee and spend the morning enjoying the hut before traveling to The Forks and the Grand Falls Hut.

One of our options is a hike up Indian Mountain (2,338′) which offers fine views of the AT’s 100-Mile Wilderness from its summit. Another option is to stay closer to Little Lyford and hike the Pond Loop Trail, which goes around the scenic shores of Little Lyford Ponds.

Our 50-mile transfer, between the Moosehead Lake region and the western mountains, will take about 2 hours. Once at the trailhead, we’ll have about a half-mile walk into Grand Falls Hut,  Maine Huts, and Trails’  most remote hut, in time for dinner.

We are now in  Maine Huts and Trails  territory. One of the newest outdoor organizations and a non-profit,  Maine Huts and Trails  has begun the work of establishing a 180-mile network of trails and mountain huts. It's being developed through some of the most beautiful and unspoiled landscapes of Maine’s Western Mountains. Its mission is to “preserve some of Western Maine’s best backcountry for the purposes of conservation and environmentally sensitive economic development, and ensure public access for generations to come.” Bunkrooms with shared facilities. Dinner, breakfast, and lunch included.

Day 5 : Canoe and hike to Flagstaff Lake: Our day begins with a short descent to the Dead River. A mile and a half into our hike, we’ll pass by Grand Falls. An imposing waterfall 40 feet high and 120 feet across, Grand Falls is one of the most powerful and scenic undammed waterfalls in the Northeast. Just past the Falls, we’ll pick up our canoes for a five-mile paddle along the Dead River. Calm through this section, it slices a path through this remote and beautiful corner of Maine. Once we’re back onshore again we’ll have another 3 miles of hiking through the woods and along the shore of Flagstaff Lake to the Flagstaff Hut. Bunkrooms with shared facilities. Dinner, breakfast, and lunch included.

Day 6 : Hike Cranberry Peak: A morning pontoon boat transfer across Flagstaff Lake will afford great views of the Bigelow Range before we're deposited on the opposite shore at the start of The Range Trail. We climb to the summit of Cranberry Peak (3,213′). The trail begins gradually and then climbs steadily. Once at the top, the 360-degree views are spectacular. On our descent, we pass by the shores of Cranberry Pond, and then we once again join the AT as it heads south. From the valley, we have a short transfer to our accommodation for the night. Twin-bed rooms with private bathrooms. Dinner, breakfast, and lunch included.

Day 7 : Day hike – transfer to Lodge: We begin with a short transfer and then hike to Stratton Brook Hut (1,880′), arriving in time for lunch. A 3-mile return hike will bring us back for our van transfer to Kingfield and our night’s accommodation, Claybrook Mountain Lodge. Farewell Dinner, breakfast, and lunch included.

Day 8 : Depart for Portland Jetport: After breakfast, we’ll depart for Portland, a 3-hour drive. We will arrive at the Portland Jetport at about 12:00 noon.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND FACILITIES

Our nights will be spent at both the  Appalachian Mountain Club  backcountry lodges and the  Maine Huts and Trails  huts. Together they offer an appealing mix of accommodations—classic, historic “Maine Woods” on the one hand and newly-constructed, off-the-grid, architect-designed on the other. All the huts and lodges are heated, provide hearty, locally-sourced meals and offer comfortable bunkroom-style sleeping arrangements for 4 - 6 persons. The shared facilities include hot showers. Many of the huts are environmentally low impact, producing their own power by means of solar and hydro energy. The atmosphere is friendly and jovial as people gather to spend the night. Single rooms are not available.

It is easiest to fly to Portland, Maine, where we will rendezvous on the first day for a group transfer to our first night’s accommodation, Gorman Chairback Lodge near Greenville, Maine. It is also possible to fly to Boston, Massachusetts, or Manchester, New Hampshire, and transfer to the Portland area by bus, train, shuttle or rental car.

LUGGAGE AND PACKS

Luggage will be transferred each day to the next hut. You need to have a sleeping bag for use in the huts. Extra luggage not needed on the day hikes will be transferred to each hut. (We will need to transfer our bags 1/2 mile by hand cart to one Hut); however, you must pack your extra gear in a large pack with straps (Northface Base Camp duffel or similar; 25 lbs is maximum weight). Normally the shuttle van can drive the extra luggage all the way to the huts on the jeep roads; however, if weather or other issues close the access road, the crew needs to carry our extra luggage and having backpacks makes this much easier. For the last ½ mile to Grand Falls Hut, we will push our extra bags in a hand cart from the end of the dirt access road. Additional luggage you won't need access to during the hike can be left in the van for the duration of the trip. See our sample packing list .

MEETING POINT

We will meet as a group on Day 1 at 11:00 am at the Portland International Jetport in Portland, Maine.

ENDING POINT

The trip will end on Day 8 with morning transfer back to Portland International Jetport. We will arrive at the airport at about 12:00 noon.

WHO WOULD LIKE THIS TRIP?

Our Western Maine Mountains Hut Hike is a great trip for anyone interested in hiking the Appalachian mountains of Maine and experiencing a “European hut-style” vacation close to home. All the lodges and huts used in this itinerary are situated in beautiful, remote, peaceful natural settings that afford the opportunity to experience Maine’s wildlife. The hiking is varied, and our boat transfer to Flagstaff hut provides the opportunity to learn about the history of the lake and the town that was flooded for its creation.

Having a Maine naturalist hiking along with us also makes this trip a perfect one for those who would enjoy learning about the flora and fauna of the Maine woods. As Mainers love to say, this 8-day trip is “wicked good.” Join us!

  • 7 Breathtaking Towns to Visit in Maine

Otherwise known as vacationland, Maine attracts an enormous number of visitors in the summertime as New Englanders pack up their vehicles to escape the hustle of the city and road trip to this vast and rugged state. Maine is the largest state in New England and is the least populated state east of the Mississippi River . There’s endless serene beauty with 3500 miles of coastline dotted with adorable seaside towns and historic lighthouses people from afar come to photograph and see. While cruising US Route 1 along the Atlantic Coast , lobster shacks are a common sight, as friendly locals wait to fix you a plate. After all, the state produces 90 percent of the nation’s lobster. Inland, the Maine Highlands stretch across the sky and provide endless adventure such as fishing, hiking, and skiing in the winter. Discover 7 breathtaking towns in New England’s far northern state and consider stopping by on your next vacation!

Aerial view of Bar Harbor, Maine.

With jagged ocean cliffs and rocky beaches, the seaside town of Bar Harbor sits on the northern side of the state. The quaint town has a small population of about 5,200 people. You could say life slows down here. Colorful wooden boutiques, restaurants, and galleries line the downtown area, which rests on a small sloped hill and has gorgeous views of the harbor. Lobstering is one of the main industries here, and on any given day visitors can watch boats return from sea. With that said, there are numerous spots to have a lobster feast served with plenty of dipping butter and a side of corn on the cob. A sign you found a good place to stop is the sight of large boiling pots of lobster out front.

Tourism also fuels the economy here, as first-time visitors often return to relax and bask in the natural beauty. Bar Harbor is the gateway to Acadia National Park, one of the most visited national parks in the country. Referred to as a place where the mountains meet the sea, there are amazing scenic drives to take in the park and great hiking to try, too. You can trek up to Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the eastern seaboard. It offers magnificent views of the island landscape and is the first place in the country you can see the sunrise in the morning.

Rockport, Maine in a well-protected harbor just west of North Haven Island on Penobscot Bay.

Although Rockport is a small community, the mid-coast town is awfully mighty and full of life. With a population of 3640 people, Rockport is considered an art mecca, and creative professionals from around the world live here. In fact, the town owns and operates the Rockport Opera Center, which holds concerts and plays throughout the year. Further, the Center for Main Contemporary Art is only 7 miles away in Rockland and is considered one of the best art galleries in the country. And Maine Media College is located in town, attracting inspired photographers and filmmakers. With all that said, you can see why creatives are drawn here.

A popular spot for tourists is Rockport Marine Park, where you can see the Andre the Seal statue. You can learn about how the beloved seal pup was abandoned and found by a Rockport resident, and how his story is the inspiration behind two books and a film. Not too far away is the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, which rests on the end of a long breakwater. There’s a keeper’s house visitors can explore, or they can climb to the top of the lantern to watch historic schooners go by. In town, there’s an impressive selection of historic buildings with great shops and restaurants. And if you feel like a bit of farm life, you can tour Aldermere Farm, where there’s a collection of Belted Gollawy cattle, also known as “Oreo cows.”

Kittery is considered the oldest town in Maine and is located on the southernmost tip of the state, resting right on the border of New Hampshire . Some of the earliest houses in the state can be found in seaside neighborhoods such as Kittery Point. A little over 10,000 people call this delightful place home and the picturesque historic town has transformed into a hipster paradise. That is easy to see with the trendy boutiques to shop at and chef-driven restaurants to indulge in, such as Warren’s Lobster House. And just a little way outside of town, there are unforgettable scenic vistas, lighthouses, and historic forts. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is the Navy’s oldest continuously running shipyard, and visitors can take tours in the afternoons. Another great stop is Fort McClary State Historic Site, which sits next to the pristine Piscataqua River . Visitors can learn about how the fort was active during five wars, including the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 . And for those with a fascination for lighthouses, Whaleback Lighthouse is 5 miles away. It's a gorgeous sight, providing boaters direction at the mouth of the Piscataqua River.

Aerial view of Greenville, Maine.

The inland towns of Maine offer just as much serenity as the seaside communities but are often left out. One place you don't want to miss is Greenville, which is located in the heart of the Maine Highlands. The area is a great escape from the city and attracts outdoor enthusiasts with its endless dense forests, tall mountains, and clear streams and rivers. It has a small living population just shy of 1430 people. The community borders Moosehead Lake, the largest coldwater lake in Maine, stretching 40 miles long and 20 miles wide. There's excellent brook trout and salmon fishing, and tourists can cruise around the lake at sunset on the Katahdin, the last remaining steamboat in Maine. Venturing away from the lake, tourists can hike to the top of Mount Kineo and scavenge for a light-colored volcanic rock called rhyolite. The area has the world’s largest masses of it here. And while adventuring in the backwoods, you might just spot a Moose . In the springtime, the sightings can be in the hundreds. For a real treat, tourists can hop on a moose safari to learn about them and view the wildlife.

It should be mentioned that the town is not just reserved for summer travel. For those who dare to venture here in the winter, you can enjoy the annual dog sled race, a one-of-a-kind experience. And in town on a cold day, one can explore the Moosehead Maritime Museum, which gives a nice storyline of the area.

Cape Elizabeth

Aerial view of Two Lights Lighthouse on the oceanfront in Cape Elizabeth

Cape Elizabeth is a charming seaside town where one feels like everyone is family. The friendly town has gorgeous historic homes and a sprawling open green landscape that hugs the shore of Casco Bay. Located on the southern coast of Maine, the town has a population of 9,530 people and is only about 10 miles outside of Portland, which is the largest city in the state. With that said, Cape Elizabeth is home to the Portland Head Light, which is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. People can take tours or walk to the top of the lookout, and there’s a museum visitors can explore that is open during the day. The lighthouse is in Fort Williams Park, which spans 90 acres of rolling green lawn and recreational space. Given the open land in Cape Elizabeth, the quaint small town is often best explored by bicycle. And if you feel like city life for a day, you can hop in your vehicle and head to Portland where there are great shops and restaurants. A good place to stop is the Portland Observatory, a historic maritime signal tower that offers great views. It was built in 1807 to serve as a communication station for Portland Harbor.

Swan's Island

A walkway in Swan's Island, Maine

Swan’s Island is a darling little community that’s surrounded by picturesque countryside with a tiny population of 417 people, Despite its small size, the town draws thousands of tourists a year because of the surrounding attractions. It’s home to the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory, which is referred to as the crown jewel of coastal Maine. The bridge towers higher than the Statue of Liberty and is the tallest bridge observatory in the world. When you get to the top, there are amazing views of the Penobscot River and distant mountains to the west. The bridge is conveniently located next to the historic Fort Knox, one of the best-preserved military forts on the New England coast. Visitors can learn how it was constructed in the 1800s to protect the Penobscot River Valley from possible British naval attack.

For lighthouse enthusiasts, the historic Burnt Coat Harbor Lighthouse is a unique place to visit during a day trip. It is located at the entrance of Burnt Coat Harbor and is a beacon for lobster boaters finding their way home. For a real treat, you can climb to the top of the tower and watch boats return from a day at sea. And if you feel like being active, there are hiking trails near the lighthouse, such as Long Point Beach Trail and Burying Point Trail. And after a long day of exploring the Harbor Watch Inn is a great place to kick up your feet and take in the hospitality. Keep in mind that the town is a “dry community,” so if you want to have a glass of wine during sunset, be sure to bring your own bottle. For essentials though, there’s a market center where you can get groceries and supplies.

Overlooking York, Maine.

Located on the Gulf of Maine , York is a darling resort town with a gilded-age vibe that tourists flock to. It is made up of four communities: York Village, York Harbor, York Beach, and Cape Neddick, and has a population of about 14,000 people. It used to be part of a seaside ski town and transformed into a sought-after summer destination for its beaches and outdoor recreation. The Nubble Lighthouse in Cape Neddick is a highly photographed landmark and features a keeper’s house with gingerbread trim. However, the lighthouse is on an island, so visitors are limited to viewing it from the mainland. With that in mind, Sohier Park is a popular spot you can see it from while having a nice picnic by the water too.

There’s also quite a bit of outdoor adventure here. You can hike up Mount Agamenticus, which offers views of the Atlantic Ocean and the White Mountains, and you can even see Boston’s skyline in the far distance. Also, the York River runs right through town and is a great place to go boating, canoeing, and kayaking. It flows out to the Atlantic at York Harbor and is partially tidal, meaning the water level rises and falls with the ocean. Visitors can cross the Wiggley Bridge, one of the smallest suspension bridges in the world.

Maine is a gorgeous state that will leave you feeling refreshed and recharged. From the gorgeous rocky coast to the Main Highlands inland, the scenery is spectacular here. And there’s no shortage of history. Whether you’re visiting a museum or taking in the historic buildings and homes, the small towns of Maine will steal your heart. Sites of the lobster industry are everywhere, and seafood restaurants gladly open their doors to visitors. On any given day, you can watch the lobster boats return to the harbor or hike to the nearby historic lighthouse. The towns of Maine have something for everyone. And they might just leave you wanting to stay a bit longer.

maine hiking tours

This story was originally published in April 2015.

You don’t always have to huff and puff for miles to reach a great view from the top of a mountain. In Maine, there are plenty of short hikes up small mountains and hills to vistas that may take you by surprise.

There are all sorts of reasons you might be drawn to these shorter mountain hikes. Maybe you’re trying to introduce a kid to hiking. Maybe you’re just a beginner hiker yourself. Or maybe, for whatever reason, you just aren’t cut out for the big mountains anymore. Whatever your reason for hiking small mountains — and believe me, you don’t actually need a reason — here are a few Maine trails you might enjoy:

Pigeon Hill

maine hiking tours

At 317 feet above sea level, the summit of Pigeon Hill is one of the high points along the coast of Washington County. Located near the coast in Steuben, the hill is home to a 1.2-mile trail network maintained by the Downeast Coastal Conservancy. The trails lead to the top of the hill, which — with its bare bedrock and low-lying bushes — resembles the top of much taller mountains in Acadia National Park. On a clean day, hikers can see all the way to Petit Manan Light from the top of Pigeon Hill.

Flying Mountain

maine hiking tours

One of the lowest peaks in Acadia National Park, Flying Mountain still offers some great views of the Mount Desert Island and ocean. You can reach its summit, 284 feet above sea level, with a 0.6-mile out-and-back hike or 1.4-mile loop hike. Much of the trail to the top is gravel and log steps, but just before reaching the peak, you’ll travel over exposed ledges with great views of Somes Sound, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor and islands to the north, including the Cranberries. The summit is marked with a wooden summit sign in a pile of rocks.

Mount Phillip

maine hiking tours

Located in the small town of Rome in central Maine, Mount Phillip rises 755 feet above sea level. The trail on the mountain is a 1.3-mile loop and is maintained by the Belgrade Regional Alliance. Hiked in either direction, the loop trail climbs the mountain gradually through a forest of maple, birch, oak, white pine and hemlocks to ledges near the summit that offer good views of Great Pond and the Kennebec Highlands.

Located on a 295-acre preserve in Rockport, Beech Hill is covered with wild blueberries and is one of the official stops of the Maine Birding Trail, with more than 125 species on its checklist. A 0.75-mile trail leads gradually to the hill’s top and a historic stone building called Beech Nut. Beech Hill is the only bald hilltop in the area and offers views of Penobscot Bay, the Camden Hills and Saint George Peninsula.

maine hiking tours

Not far from eastern Maine blueberry fields, Baker Hill rises a few hundred feet above sea level in the coastal town of Sullivan. The trails on the hill lead through a mossy forest filled with boulder to outlooks near the top. The trails are short — less than 0.5 mile long each — and travel over a few steep areas. The Frenchman Bay Conservancy maintains these trails, as well as a network of trails in the neighboring Long Ledges Preserve.

Bradbury Mountain

maine hiking tours

At nearly 500 feet above sea level, the top of Bradbury Mountain is one of the top destinations in Bradbury Mountain State Park in Freeport. It’s a quick hike; from the parking lot, it’s just 0.3 mile by trail to the top of the mountain, which offers a great view of the region and is a place frequented by bird watchers and picnickers. If looking for a longer hike, the park is home to a vast trail network, and all of the trails are marked with different color blazes to make navigation easier.

John B. Mountain

maine hiking tours

This mountain in Brooksville reaches just 250 feet above sea level, but ledges near its top offer great views of the area. The interconnecting trails on the property, maintained by the Blue Hill Heritage Trust, total about 1 mile. The trail that leads to the summit is steep in some places.

Newman Hill

maine hiking tours

This hill is located on conservation land owned and maintained by the Orono Land Trust. The property is one of several conservation lands that makes up the Caribou Bog Conservation Area in Orono. A 2-mile loop hike leads to the top of the hill, which is rocky and provides a view of Pushaw Lake. The trail travels through a variety of terrain, including open fields, along ponds and through stands of oak and pine.

Haystack Mountain

maine hiking tours

Rising just over 800 feet above sea level, Haystack Mountain in Liberty has long been a favorite hiking destination for people in the area. Blueberry fields at the top of the mountain offer wide open views of the surrounding forests, farmland and distant hills. The loop trail leading to the mountain’s top is only about 1 mile in length. Footing can be tricky in some areas of the trail because of exposed tree roots and rocks. The slope is fairly steep in a few areas.

Blue Hill Mountain

maine hiking tours

The most difficult hike on this list, Blue Hill Mountain has long been a hiking destination for families. Located in the town of Blue Hill, this mountain rises 934 feet above sea level; its bald summit provides open views of the region. The 1.75-mile Becton Trail, which opened summer of 2013, gradually climbs to the top of the mountain. The shorter Hayes and Osgood trails also climb to the summit. These trails are older and steeper than the Becton Trail.

Mount Battie

maine hiking tours

Rising about 800 feet above sea level in Camden Hills State Park, Mount Battie offers one of the most beautiful views of the Maine coast. At the summit stands a stone tower that was dedicated in 1921 by the Mount Battie Association as an enduring memorial to the men and women of Camden who served in World War I. Pulitzer Prize winner Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950), born in Rockland, often wrote poetry while sitting on the summit. You can climb the mountain on a moderately challenging hiking trail, 0.5 miles up the mountain’s south side, or you can actually reach the top of the mountain by vehicle via Mount Battie Road. Or you can park at the bottom of the hill on Mount Battie Road and hike up the 1.5-mile Tablelands Trail, which reconnects with Mount Battie Road just before the summit.

Settle in with your sweetheart for a game of Scrabble, admire the art gallery that features local artists' work or stay in bed for snuggles with the cozy Cuddledown comforters. Recent guests appreciate the location, fun decor and friendly staff members, but they warn not to get a room on the same side as the fire station since the sirens can keep you up.
