KLM Updates Crew Uniform Policy And Reveals Flashy New Custom Sneakers

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has revised its cabin crew uniform policy, allowing the staff to wear sneakers with their updated uniform. This policy aims to enhance employee well-being and comfort at work. The changes will come into effect on May 6, 2024.
Choose your own
As part of its updated uniform policy, KLM will allow cabin crew members to select their own sneakers (meeting specific criteria) or opt to purchase the specially designed KLM sneakers by Dutch luxury footwear brand Filling Pieces.
The Dutch flag carrier says that "wearing sneakers under a uniform is becoming more common among airline s and is in line with current times," and flight attendants are looking for an alternative to high heels. Commenting on the revised uniform policy, KLM Senior Purser Willeke van den Boomgaar said:
"In the past year, I have been able to test sneakers as a sustainable part of my uniform. After years of the classic look of pumps, I now wear sneakers with great pleasure! They give me a good start towards a good flight!"
Before implementing the relaxed rule, KLM conducted a pilot last year, which revealed that wearing sneakers contributes to employees' well-being. Below, find a gallery showcasing how the specially designed KLM sneakers will look.
Most legacy airline uniforms typically lean towards the formal end, not allowing the use of sneakers or visible tattoos. However, with KLM's updated uniform policy, it appears that even the most traditional legacy carriers are considering relaxing their strict uniform regulations.
Reflecting core values
The uniforms of the flight attendants changed with the times. The fashion of aviation tends to mirror the style of the time.
In the 1930s, the first flight attendants donned military-inspired skirt suits in subdued colors, along with white gloves and coordinating hats. It wasn't until the 1950s and 1960s that femininity and glamour became prominent, marked by bouffant hairstyles, pillbox hats, and trendy mod styles gaining popularity.
Today, flight attendant uniforms prioritize what is most important for modern individuals. The current uniform trend embraces features such as sneakers, relaxed fit, or gender-neutral uniforms, reflecting a blend of style, functionality, equality, diversity, and comfort.
Qantas To Relax Gender-Based Uniform Policy
While it may seem that the relaxation of flight attendant uniform regulations occurred a long time ago, it is actually a recent trend, with the majority of airlines implementing new rules from 2019 onwards.
For example, Icelandic low-cost carrier PLAY revealed its casual cabin crew uniforms in 2021 , allowing their staff to wear sneakers and branded PLAY T-shirts instead of formal shirts.
In 2022, Virgin Atlantic announced a gender identity policy that allows its staff to choose from the Vivienne Westwood-designed outfits they wear to work, irrespective of their gender, gender identity, or gender expression. This news followed the airline's relaxation of its rules on visible tattoos.
