200km From Jammu, A Bowl-Shaped Valley, Bhaderwah Is Known As Little Kashmir, And Rightly So!

For 200 kilometres, the road from Jammu to Bhaderwah, slips, slithers and snakes through some of India's most jaw-dropping terrains. Forested slopes and decrepit tuck shops pass by in an ivy green blur, and the reticent river, Neeru, glistens away into the horizon. And after five languorous hours and 40 odd minutes, the bowl-shaped valley of Bhaderwah comes into view.

Sitting on the foothills of the middle Himalayas, the town sits at a lofty 5,295ft and has been monikered very aptly as Chhota Kashmir (mini Kashmir). The deodar forests are deep and shrouded in silence, and its meadows are swathed with fuchsia rhododendrons. There's history, rife with both local legends and political fervour. But what will cause you to lose your heart in mere seconds to the once sleepy valley, is its snow-dusted mountains. Perpetually shimmering under the winter sun, they beckon travellers from across the world, making it near impossible to leave.

Vasuki Nag Temple Vasak Dhera

A paragon of architecture, this temple houses twin idols of Raja Jamute Vahan and Naagraj Vasuki, carved out of a single stone. These time-worn statues inclined at 87 degrees, date back to the 11th century. The temple is three kilometres away from Bhaderwah's city centre and thronged by pilgrims all year round.

Gupt Ganga Temple

Devoted to Lord Shiva, this shrine is believed to be the resting place of the Pandavas , of the Mahabharata fame, during their days of exile. Engraved with Bhim's footprint, one of the rocks found on the premises is locally worshipped and draws religious tourists and curious travellers in equal measure. Sitting on the banks of river Neeru, this temple is constructed entirely out of stone. Its peculiar name is derived from a local legend, that river Ganga fell on the Shiva lingam and thereafter, disappeared abruptly.

Chandi Mata Temple

Chandi Mata is another local favourite. The Hindu shrine is awash with garish colours and worships Goddess Chandi. Perched at 10,000ft above the Machail village, the octagonal temple is a pit stop for the illustrious pilgrimage trail of Machail Yatra.

Chinta Valley

At an elevation of 6,500ft, the sylvan valley is laden with conifers. One can go horse-riding from the regions of Baggan to Thuba and later visit the archaic Shiva temple nearby. The Subarnag peak trek starts from the Bhadarwah-Chinta road, and the valley also offers plenty of skiing opportunities.

Seoj Meadow

A canvas of serenity – the grasslands of Seoj are encompassed by dizzying mountains that are home to the sacred peak of Kailash Kund on the south and a choppy rivulet on the west. Locally known as Seoj Dhar, the meadow acts as the camping grounds for the Kailash Yatra pilgrims. While here, adventure enthusiasts should book a thrilling paragliding trip that will take them across the ridiculously beautiful terrains of Bhaderwah.

At 10,500ft, it's the highest point on the Bhadarwah-Chamba road. Pack a picnic lunch and clamber aboard one of the interstate buses to Padri. Carpeted by wildflowers and grass, it's teeming with pilgrims in the month of July, when the Mani-Mahesh Yatra begins.

On the southern end of Bhaderwah, lies the heavenly hamlet of Sartingal. Neighboured by deodar forests, and the hills of Kailash and Ashapati, its landscape is etched with unsung streams and kahwah stalls.

At Bhaderwah, the cuisine comprises of some beloved favourites such as the aromatic rogan josh and quite possibly the best rajma chawal in the world. As you sip on the alleviating kahwah , keep an eye out for yakhni (a heavenly lamb curry cooked with yoghurt), mawal flowers and mint, matschgand (a fiery meatball curry), and modur pulav (rice spiced with saffron, cinnamon and milk). Other than that, go about street eateries and restaurants, sampling the traditional dishes of goshtaba , aab gosht , muji gaad and dum olav in and around Bhaderwah.

October marks the onset of winters in the region and up to February, Bhaderwah and the surrounding state is at its most spectacular. The climate during these months is perfect for sightseeing tours and adventure sports. In December, temperatures tend to go as low 4ºC, so be sure to pack plenty of woollens if you're travelling during this period.

Bhaderwah is the easiest to access from Jammu, that lies 200 kilometres away from the town. The route for this journey by road can be split into four parts:

Jammu – Udhampur: 65km via NH-1A

Udhampur – Batote : 55km via NH-1A

Batote – Pul Doda : 50km via NH-1B

Pul Doda – Bhaderwah : 30km

By air : Jammu Airport is connected to the cities of Srinagar, Delhi, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

By train : Some of the major trains operating to and from Jammu are – Jammu Mail, Jammu Express, Malwa Express, Shalimar Express, Sealdah Express, Jhelum Express, Himgiri Express, Himsagar Express and Lohit Express etc.

Da Vasuki Nag Mandir is one of the most beautiful Temples in Jammu and Kashmir for both praying and sightseeing in Bhadarwah, as it is the only architectural masterpiece of its kind in all of India. Lord Vasuki Nag Yatra starts from this Temple after the Puja of God Nag Vasuki and Raja Jamuti Vahan. You can visit this Temple anytime of the year to feel the presence and blessings of Vasuki Nag himself.

3. Bhadarwah Fort

Maharaja pahad Chand built this simplistic yet royal monument in 1733. It is said that this fort has given the valley its name, as it is in this heritage building where the oldest temple of goddess Bhadrakali in Kashmir is situated. Therefore, for pilgrims and Hindu or Buddhist devotees, this location is one of the most important places to visit in Bhadarwah. The building premises are located on top of a hill that was once heavily guarded by Maharaja’s troops. The modern town is located 3 km away from this fort and from one specific window, you can glance down and view the whole valley.

4. Padri Meadow

This enchanting high-altitude Medo which is mostly covered by snow and tiny grass for most of winter and spring is located just beside the Chamba National Highway. In winter of course this place turns into a mini Gulmarg and tourists enjoy skiing activities. This place is almost always pleasantly chilly and from here you can capture the majestic vistas of some untouchable Himalayan peaks. 5. Gupt Ganga

It will not be wrong to say that this specific location is of the greatest importance among all tourist places in Bhadarwah. Legend has it that a holy cave was built in this location by the Pandavas during their Agyatvasa and that this case could take them straight to the valley of Muttan. But more importantly, it is the Gupta Ganga Temple situated on the banks of the speeding, graceful river Neeru that is the main attraction of this place. It is said that the Gupta Ganga temple is as old as India itself. The beautiful Gerua flags and pink temple top obeisance to the Lord of Kashmir and the whole of India, Lord Shiva.

6. Chinta Valley

This beautiful Nallah is a place where you can spend hours taking pictures. 7. Kailash Kund

In ancient Hindu texts, sacred lakes were given the special title of being a Kund. There are only a handful of lakes in the whole of Jammu and Kashmir which serve as Kunds to gods and goddesses – places where deities come to bathe and spend some leisurely hours. The Kailash Kund can only be visited through arduous trekking. It is Iglesias fed Lake located at a dangerous location that can only be accessed during those summer months when the Glacier has melted but monsoons have not yet arrived. This lake is located on the top of the greater Himalayas and its shores are filled with nothing but alpine soil and pebbles.

The Bhaderwah Winter Festival will take place from December 27 to December 31. The Qilla (Bhaderwah Fort), Jae Valley, Guldanda, and Gatha Park are well-known areas where activities are planned. Cultural activities, local artist performances, music, sports, local food, and kiosks promoting local craft and culinary items will kick off the festival at Bhaderwah Fort.

On the second day, music and adventure activities including paragliding, horseback riding, zorbing, and trekking will bring the Jae Valley to life. While on the third and fourth days, skiers and snow scooter riders can enjoy skiing, music, and local cuisine at Guldanda. On the fifth day of the event, celebrity artists and singers will perform until midnight to celebrate the New Year. The Community Centre has also scheduled a parallel film festival. Here the newest Bollywood productions as well as films starring local heroes will be screened for five days. The goal of the winter festival is to attract a sizable number of visitors to provide local artists and culture a platform.

Bhaderwah, often referred to as Mini Kashmir, has a history steeped in cultural diversity and resilience. The town has been a melting pot of various civilisations. They have contributed to a unique blend of traditions that find expression during the Winter Festival.

Bhaderwah's alpine grasslands in Jammu and Kashmir emerges as top choice for picnicking enthusiasts

High-altitude jaie valley meadows in jammu and kashmir attracts record number of tourists, especially students, this season..

The high-altitude Jaie Valley meadows near the picturesque Bhaderwah in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district has emerged as a favourite destination for picnickers this season, officials said. A record four lakh tourists , including 1.20 lakh students, visited the valley -- which lies at an altitude of 7,850 feet, 30 kilometres from Bhaderwah -- between May and September, Additional Deputy Commissioner Dilmir Chowdhary said. Surrounded by coniferous deodar forests, the valley has a nearly nine-kilometre-long meadow, bisected by a stream that merges with a tributary of the Chenab at Kahara.

"Over 1.20 lakh students from 385 schools, colleges and other educational institutions came to Jaie Valley for picnics from May 1 to September 9, making it the most visited high-altitude destination by students in the Jammu region," Chowdhary told. In addition, more than three lakh tourists from within and outside Jammu and Kashmir visited the valley during the same period.

"We have recorded over one lakh additional visitors to the valley this season compared to previous years," the official said. The massive footfall has turned the fortunes of locals, especially the tribal migrant Gujjar community that traditionally resides in these grasslands with their cattle during the summers. Mohd Hussain Chechi, the lumberdar of the valley's tribal population, said the massive tourist inflow has turned fortune in their favour, that too at their doorstep.

"This is no less than magic … for the first time in my life, we are selling our produce (milk and milk products) from the meadows itself and that too at a very good price, without incurring extra cost on transportation to the towns," Chechi said. He said the tribal population is earning extra as nearly 30 Gujjar youngsters offer pony rides to the visitors. Several others have opened small makeshift shops, eateries and tent house accommodations in these meadows.

The students and their teachers also seem to be in awe of the mundane beauty of the high-altitude meadows and want to return in the future. "The visit to Jaie Valley was a complete package in the form of gushing water bodies, lush green meadows, tall coniferous trees, horse rides, pure organic food and pleasant weather," said 27-year-old Shivali Parihar, a schoolteacher from Khellani.

She is completely smitten by the beauty of the place. "This time, I am here with my students for a school picnic but I will return soon with my family," she added. Thirteen-year-old Khadeeja, a student from Doda, said this is the best and most easily accessible picnic spot in the Chenab region. "We enjoyed ourselves to the hilt in the water, played cricket, rode ponies and danced in the cool weather. I simply love Jaie Valley," she said.

'Kashmir is heaven and we felt that way': J&K saw record tourist arrivals in 2023

J&K has registered a record over 2 crore tourist arrivals this year with officials crediting the G20 events held in the valley.

Srinagar: The year 2023 proved to be a particularly good year for the tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir with a record arrival of over 2 crore tourists.

"So, 2023 has been one of the most phenomenal years in terms of tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. By the 7th of December this year, we already crossed the figure of 2 crore (tourist arrivals). Last year, we reached 1.88 crore. This year, we have breached that figure and I am expecting by 31st December, that figure will be crossed in a big way," Secretary Tourism Syed Abid said.

According to the J&K tourism department, the Union Territory witnessed a surge in foreign tourist arrivals in 2023. A large part of those arrivals was due to several G20 events being hosted across the erstwhile state, including in Srinagar.

"In terms of foreign tourist arrivals, this is a very positive trend after many decades. It has provided a massive fillip to the local economy. Now you know that tourism contributes somewhere around 7.3 percent of our GSDP, in the economy of Jammu and Kashmir. And close to around 2.2 million jobs directly and indirectly," Abid said.

According to the Tourism Department, the promotion of rural, remote, and relatively lesser-known tourist destinations also contributed to the tourist boom in 2023. "One of the most important factors that the government has done is that border tourism is being promoted in a big way. So, we have a long LoC and you are aware that a lot of people are now venturing into these areas with the active support of the army and the tourism department. And one of the core focus areas has also been to provide tourists with a pleasurable experience. We have a lot of pilgrim tourism this year. We have a lot of experience in rural tourism," he said.

Officials in the Tourism Department state that the government promoted as many as 75 offbeat destinations in the Union Territory, to mark 75 years of India's independence. "Some of these include, Bhaderwah, Doodhpathri, Yousmarg, Verinag, Lolab, Bangus, Basholi and other destinations across J&K, including Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah and so on," they said

Another reason for the visitor boom has been the warm hospitality tourists experience in Kashmir. Almost universally, visitors to the Union Territory express the feeling of having enjoyed a unique and unforgettable experience during their visits. "It's truly heaven. I have been to Switzerland. To be frank, it is comparable and you can truly say Kashmir is like Switzerland for India, definitely," said Asif Mehdi, a tourist from Mumbai.

Sneha, another tourist from Mumbai said she loved being in Kashmir. "It is said that Kashmir is the heaven of India and we are in heaven. We felt that way. ," she said. Asked what places she visited, Sneha said: "Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Srinagar and Sonamarg. I enjoyed all the places but the best of all was Sonamarg.”

In addition to horticulture, the tourism industry forms the backbone of Jammu and Kashmir's economy according to industry experts. Farooq Kuthoo, a Travel Agent & Executive Committee Member, Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) said G20 sent a positive message across the globe.

"This year we've had a record number of tourists visiting the Valley, both within the country as well as abroad. We've had a good footfall of foreign tourists also. After the G20 summit, a strong and positive message was sent across the globe." Stakeholders express optimism about 2024 being another record-breaking year for the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir. (With PTI inputs)

Bhaderwah Winter Festival in J&K from December 27

Bhaderwah Winter Festival, a five-day event lined up with cultural activities, sports, food fests, and shopping stalls will kick off on December 27. It will be held at the Bhaderwah Valley of Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district, to attract revellers for the year-end festivities, an official said on Tuesday. It will be celebrated at different locations till December 31, the official said. He said delightful activities have been planned at famous destinations such as the Qilla (Bhaderwah Fort), Jae Valley, Guldanda, and Gatha Park.

District Development Commissioner (Doda) Harvinder Singh chaired a meeting with stakeholders in Bhaderwah and finalised the activities and arrangements for the event, the official said. The festival will kick off from Bhaderwah Fort with cultural activities, performances by local artists, music, sports, local cuisine, and stalls showcasing local products. On the second day, Jae Valley will come alive with music and adventure sports such as paragliding, horse riding, zorbing, and trekking, the official said. On the third and fourth days, the scene will shift to Guldanda to give tourists a different taste in the snow, he said, adding the visitors can enjoy skiing, snow scooter rides, music, local food, and zorbing. The last day of the year and the fifth day of the festival will see festivities at Gatha Park where celebrity artistes and singers will perform throughout the day till midnight to welcome the new year, the official said. 

A parallel film festival has also been planned at the Community Centre where the latest Bollywood films and stories of local heroes will be screened during all five days of the festival. Bhaderwah, an emerging tourist destination, is witnessing the arrival of a huge number of visitors from across the country and abroad throughout the year, reflecting its huge potential to become a favored destination, the official said. More than 6.5 lakh tourists have visited the valley this year, which speaks a lot about its potential, he added.
