What makes Prambanan temple compounds so special? Well, it is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

FYI: Candi = Temple in the Bahasa Indonesia language

Candi Prambanan is said to be the lesser of the two famous temples in Yogyakarta, with the other being Borobudur Temple (the largest Buddhist temple in the world). Both temples in Yogyakarta offer something different to one another apart from the religious connotations associated with the structures.

It is quite a satisfying and comforting feeling knowing that the religious beliefs, of Islamism, Hinduism and Buddhism could coexist happily for so many years in such close proximity to one another.

So why do you need to visit this temple? In my opinion, Borobudur and Prambanan temples actually go hand in hand . Borobudur temple is renowned for its stunning stupas and Buddha figures, and Prambanan is characterized by its unique tall spires and the ruins of the massive volcanic earthquake –  I couldn’t visit one without visiting the other.

Now if I haven’t convinced you to visit Candi Prambanan with the little snippet above let me go into detail below .

Our Prambanan Temple Experience

Now visiting temples on vacations might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but when we heard about Borobudur and Prambanan we knew we had to see them whilst we were living in Java .

prambanan tour price

We opted to fly into Yogyakarta and spend 4 days exploring this cultural city. We learned that it was the cultural hub of Java and a major tourist destination for locals of Indonesia too.

We visited the Prambanan temple without doing too much research into the destination, and in hindsight, I wish I had this guide before visiting myself.

Arriving at the Prambanan temple is beautiful because you can see the mammoth structure from a distance. It’s wonderful because you honestly have no clue this incredible monument is hiding in the middle of this bustling city.

prambanan tour price

There’s a beautiful Prambanan sign that you can take pictures in front of and you’ll obviously experience many photographers touting professional photographs here too.

Prambanan Indonesia definitely lived up to expectations, the walk-in was quite breathtaking and rather sombre at the same time because you see a large amount of the stonework and ruins scattered along with the outer courtyard and realise it’s as a result of the massive volcanic eruption in the 16th century.

What we learnt from our Prambanan Temple Experience

✅ Visit in the morning or late afternoon for the Prambanan sunset

✅ Wear light airy clothing

✅ Have drinking water on hand

✅ Stay at accommodation within the city centre

✅ If you aren’t concerned with visiting Borobudur Temple at sunrise, buy a Borobudur-Prambanan combined ticket

About Prambanan Temple

Prambanan Temple Compounds is the largest and most beautiful Hindu temple complex in Indonesia. Prambanan was built somewhere between the 9th and 10th Century, It truly is a masterpiece of Hindu culture.

The Prambanan Earthquake

prambanan tour price

A major earthquake in the 16th century caused serious damage to the already crumbling forgotten temples. The British rediscovered the Prambanan temple in Indonesia, along with Borobudur , in the early 19th century.

Half-hearted excavations by archaeologists in the 1880s along with facilitated looting occurred during this time. Many locals in the area, took ancient stones from the temple to use for building their own homes, etc. In 1918, the Dutch began reconstruction of the compound and proper restoration only in 1930.

Efforts at restoration continue to this day for Prambanan Yogyakarta Indonesia. The reconstruction of the main Indonesia Shiva temple was completed around 1953 and inaugurated by Sukarno (the first President of Indonesia). Candi Prambanan Jogja was selected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

Who Built Prambanan?

Candi Prambanan Temple yogayakarta

Prambanan Temple Indonesia is a collection of monumental Hindu temples built by Wangsa Sanjaya , namely Raja Balitung Maha Sambu.

Although there is no finite evidence of the building orders, this assumption is based on the contents of the Syiwagrha Inscription found around Prambanan and currently stored in the National Museum in Jakarta. Prambanan Jogja is the largest temple compound dedicated to Shiva in Indonesia.

“The inscription dating from 778 Saka (856 AD) was written during the reign of Rakai Pikatan the Mataram Kingdom, rulers of central Java and defeaters of the Sailendra Dynasty”. – Borobudurpark

The Prambanan Structure

The original plan of Prambanan Temple Java is rectangular, consisting of an outer courtyard and three courts, namely Jaba (outer court), Tengahan (middle court) , and Njeron (inner court).

Prambanan Temple Compounds consist of Prambanan Temple (also called Loro Jonggrang or Rara Jonggrang), Sewu Temple, Bubrah Temple and Lumbung Temple. Prambanan Temple itself is a Hindu temple complex consisting of 240 temples.

Initially, there were 240 temples in the complex but many of them have deteriorated or been looted leaving just scattered stones.

💡 PERSONAL THOUGHTS: I remember reading about the looting and was really disheartened by that fact, especially because those houses built from these stones probably don’t appreciate the gravity of having such stone built into their houses that are centuries years old.

Candi Prambanan temple at sunset with sunset lighting

Rising above the centre of these concentric squares are three temples decorated with the intricate relief Candi Prambanan depicts illustrating the epic of the Ramayana, dedicated to the three great Hindu divinities (Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma) and three temples dedicated to the animals who serve them.

The complex is laid out in the form of a mandala and features the tall jagged towering spires that are typical of Hindu Prambanan temple architecture, and represent Meru (like Mount Semeru), the holy mountain where the gods live.

prambanan tour price

It was wonderful to roam the grounds of the temple, and venturing into the many smaller temple chambers, and excited to find Hindu deities still in a perfect form almost untouched by the earthquake.

The Prambanan Temple zones

The Prambanan temple complex consists of three zones. The three main inner shrines are dedicated to Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Keeper, and Shiva the Destroyer.

The Shiva temple Indonesia dedicated to Shiva the Destroyer is the tallest and largest structure in the Prambanan complex, it measures 47 meters tall.

The Shiva temple contains five chambers, four small chambers in every cardinal direction, and one bigger main chamber in the central part of the temple. The largest chamber contains a 3 metre high statue of Shiva Mahadeva.

Vishnu Temple is dedicated to Vishnu the Preserver. It measures 33 metres tall. The relief Prambanan statues around its perimeter tell the story of Lord Krishna, a personification of Vishnu.

Brahma Temple is dedicated to Brahma the Creator. It measures 33 metres tall with its relief panels around the perimeter also telling the story of the Ramayana Prambanan.

How to Get to Yogyakarta?

Prambanan Candi Prambanan Temple yogyakarta

Prambanan Hindu temple is located in Yogyakarta, Java Indonesia. This is a major city in Indonesia and fairly easy to get to. Here are some ways to get to Yogyakarta from other parts of Indonesia:

Jakarta to Yogyakarta

✈️ OPTION 1: Fly from Jakarta International (Soekarno-Hatta) to Yogyakarta Airport (Adisucipto Airport), the flight is approximately an hour. Then follow the directions below on options to get from Yogyakarta to Prambanan.

🚆 OPTION 2: Significantly cheaper, is to take the train from Jakarta to Yogyakarta. The journey is approximately 7 hours, but there are overnight trips and various class options to choose from to make the trip a bit more comfortable.

Bali to Yogyakarta

✈️ OPTION 1: The quickest option is to  fly from Bali Airport (Ngurah Rai International Airport) to Yogyakarta Airport (Adisucipto).

🚢🚆 OPTION 2: The other option is more cost-effective but will take longer. In Bali, head to Gilimanuk harbour and catch the ferry to Ketapang Port . Once you arrive at the port, head to the Banyuwangi Baru station, and there you can take the train to Yogyakarta Lempunyangan station. The train journey is in and around 13 to 15 hours. The ferry ride is only approx 45 minutes and the Ketapang port is only a 10-minute walk from the Banyuwangi station.

Surabaya to Yogyakarta

✈️ OPTION 1: Fly from Surabaya to Yogyakarta.

🚆 OPTION 2: The train option is approximately 4 to 5 hours, but again, is pretty cheap and depending on the train class you choose, is quite comfortable. We used the train to get to our next destination (Surabaya) when travelling from Central Java to Mount Bromo.

How to Get to Prambanan Temple?

Candi Prambanan temple yogyakarta

Prambanan temple is an easily accessible attraction once in Yogyakarta. There are 3 main options:

1. Tour Company

There are many tour services which you could use to combine to see some other sights in Yogyakarta or just hire a private driver for a one-day trip. These tours are quite easy to find and hassle-free when you have someone organizing everything for you.

2. Public Transport

Take a bus from Yogyakarta to Prambanan: From Yogyakarta, If you are at Adisutjipto airport (Yogyakarta city airport) you can take the Transjogja bus route 1A to Prambanan temple. Transjogja 1A route has stops at the following destinations: Terminal Prambanan shelter, Terminal Adisutjipto airport shelter, Tugu train station, Terminal Malioboro amongst others.

💡 TRAVELIST INSIGHT: As a side note , be aware that most people might not actually be able to speak English , So if you have some basic Bahasa language skills, this might be the option for you. You will also need to purchase a bus card, which can be easily bought at Indomaret and Kmart-type stores . The Transjogja Prambanan Terminal route is perfect for those looking to try local transport systems.

3. Hire a Car or Motorcycle

( an option only for those familiar with driving in a busy Southeast Asian City )

The Prambanan travel time from the city centre is about 17 km and can be anything between 20 to 40 minutes depending on the time of day.

⚠️ CAUTION:  Again I must stress, riding a motorcycle in Indonesia is vastly different from the experience you may have of riding a motorcycle in other first-world countries . In Indonesia the roads aren’t great, the traffic is insane and most locals riding motorcycles do not follow the rules of the road or traffic lights. It can be a very scary experience if you are not familiar with riding a motorcycle and you will also need to HAVE VERY GOOD TRAVEL INSURANCE. There are plenty of tourists who unfortunately who have fallen victim to thinking they could do this not having the experience of riding a motorcycle in Indonesia before

Prambanan Temple Opening Times

Prambanan Candi

The Prambanan temple opening hours are now 7:30 AM to 17:30 PM. This means it is no longer possible to see sunset whilst on the Prambanan temple grounds during the current COVID-19 period. For more on Candi Prambanan, opening hours visit the website (Borobudurpark.com)

Both Borobudur and Prambanan Temple are closed on Mondays.

PERSONAL OPINION: The Prambanan ticket price has been considered by many to be expensive. I think the word expensive here is relative . The amount of money it takes to restore and maintain such an incredible structure must not be taken lightly. There is often different pricing for foreigners compared to locals. I think one must be cognizant that Indonesia is a third-world country with a growing economy . The tourism industry is a major contributor to the country and fees are there to maintain such attractions in order to keep the economy and tourism of the country going.

Sunset at Prambanan Temple is around 17:20 to 17:45. Even though the gate will close at 17:30, visitors who are already in the temple complex can stay until sunset and leave thereafter.

Best Time of Year to Visit Prambanan Temple

The best time to visit is during the Indonesian dry season which lies between April and November. As there is not much shelter around the temple, it’s best to visit during the dry season. In terms of actual time, probably first thing in the morning or late afternoon. The reason being the sun and heat, there is no real shade or covering whilst walking around.

Guide to Visiting Prambanan Temple – Largest Hindu Temple in Indonesia

Please share this article if you think it's awesome!

  • Facebook 30

Built in the 10th century, Prambanan Temple is the largest Hindu temple compound in Indonesia. It is located right on the border of 2 provinces: Yogyakarta and Central Java.

Because of its proximity to Yogyakarta city, most people travel from Yogyakarta to Prambanan on a day trip.

In Indonesian language, Prambanan Temple is called Candi Prambanan . Candi usually refers to ancient stone temples built during Hindu and Buddhist era in Indonesia.

Candi Prambanan is not just a single temple. Instead, it is a compound filled with hundreds of temples. Don’t worry, I will only write about the significant ones.

The Prambanan Temple Compound was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, together with Borobudur .

Being less popular than Borobudur, Prambanan is often overlooked by travelers visiting Yogyakarta. However, I truly feel that every traveler should make Prambanan into their to-do list when visiting Yogyakarta, because this temple compound is really beautiful and worth spending half a day.

In this guide, I’ll share my experience visiting Prambanan as well as important travel information you need to know before visiting.

Prambanan Temple Operating Hours

Before visiting, please note that they don’t allow visitors to bring food into the temple compound. They do bag check during admission.

There are food stalls inside the compound, but they’re near the exit which is quite far from the temples. So, try to avoid visiting Prambanan during your meal time or you’d risk getting hungry during your visit.

Prambanan Temple Entrance Fee

Here are the official ticket prices:

However, you can get slightly cheaper price if you book your ticket here . If you purchase online ticket, you need to exchange it to a physical ticket at the counter.

Child refers to children aged between 3 and 10.

If you’d like to visit Prambanan together with Borobudur or Ratu Boko, you can get a bundle ticket from the ticket counter. It costs USD 45 (Adult) & USD 27 (Child) for foreigners. ( Source )

How to Get to Prambanan Temple

By taxi/ride hailing.

Prambanan Temple is about 17km from Malioboro (aka the central of Yogyakarta). The journey takes between 30 to 45 minutes depending on the traffic condition. The fare ranges between IDR 80k to 130k.

By private car charter

If you’re going to many places in a day, you can consider renting a private car with driver . Through this route, you can create your own custom itinerary and the driver will drive you anywhere you want during the 10-hour rental period. Make sure you book the correct area.

By private tour

If you want to visit both Borobudur and Prambanan in a day, you can consider taking this private tour . It includes private car charter, local driver, entrance ticket and tour guide (optional add-on).

Trans Jogja Bus 1A connects Malioboro and Tugu with Prambanan. Full route can be seen here . Bus 1A will stop at Candi Prambanan Terminal, from which you can walk for about 10 mins to the entrance of Prambanan.

Prambanan Temple History

Prambanan is a Hindu temple built in the 10th century to worship the three great Hindu divinities (Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma). Back then, Prambanan was used as a Candi Agung for various royal and religious ceremonies.

There is not much facts known about real history of Prambanan Temple. Some historians believe that Prambanan was built by Rakai Pikatan, the king of Sanjaya dynasty. Others believe that it was built by Sailendra dynasty, the Buddhist dynasty that built Borobudur Temple.

Several centuries later, Prambanan was abandoned as the power shifts to East Java. Earthquakes and eruptions toppled and buried the temple.

In 1930s restoration effort was started to reconstruct the ruined temples.

Exploring Prambanan Temple Compound

The Prambanan Temple Compound is quite huge! If you’re fit, you can get around the compound by walking. Otherwise, you can pay to rent a bicycle, scooter, or join a shuttle or golf car.

After entering the temple compound, you will pass through an undulating park with concrete stones scattered on it, before arriving at the main courtyard.

Main Courtyard of Candi Prambanan

The main courtyard of Candi Prambanan houses 3 main temples: Candi Siva (the biggest one in the middle), Candi Brahma (south of Candi Siva) and Candi Vishnu (north of Candi Siva).

Next to these 3 main temples are 3 smaller temples dedicated to the animals who serve them: Candi Nandi (sacred bull of Siva), Candi Angsa (goose of Brahma) and Candi Garuda (eagle of Vishnu).

Visitors are not allowed to climb to the top of the main temples at the courtyard.

There is a earthquake monument that stood next to a fallen stupa (ratna peak). This monument tells story of the 2006 earthquake that struck Prambanan Temple, causing toppling and devastation of some temples.

Do not miss out the ruins that surround the courtyard.

Guide to Visiting Candi Prambanan - Prambanan Temple Main Courtyard

After exploring the courtyard, DO NOT head to exit yet. You haven’t seen it all. There are 3 more important Candi that you want to visit, namely Candi Sewu, Candi Bubrah and Candi Lumbung. Admission to these 3 candi is already included in you Prambanan ticket.

Candi Sewu is the furthest temple from Prambanan main complex (about 1km north of courtyard), and it’s also the biggest of the three. On the way to Sewu, you will pass by Lumbung and Bubrah.

Our guide recommended that we visit Sewu first so that you can immediately see the difference between a Buddhist temple (Sewu) and Hindu temple (Prambanan). Later, as you make your way back to Prambanan, you will notice that Bubrah & Lumbung has less Buddhist influence and more Hindu influence.

Guide to Visiting Candi Prambanan - Candi Sewu

Candi Sewu is a Buddhist temple dating from around AD 850. Candi Sewu site is quite huge. It has 1 Candi Induk (main temple), 8 Candi Apit (2 on each side) and 240 Candi Perwara.

There are 4 pairs of Dwarapala guardians located at 4 side entrances.

Candi Sewu has prominent round stupas at the top of each temple.

Guide to Visiting Candi Prambanan - Candi Sewu

During our visit, it is possible to climb up the stairs and enter the temple. There’s no statues, no light and no opening inside the temple, but the air circulation is pretty good, it was very breezy inside.

Guide to Visiting Candi Prambanan - Candi Sewu

Candi Sewu is truly a hidden gem off-the-beaten-path because it is often skipped my most visitors because they may not be aware of its existence, or they don’t want to make the long walk under the hot sun. If you’re able to make the walk, I highly recommend that you visit Candi Sewu.

Candi Bubrah

Candi Bubrah is a Buddhist temple located 300m south of Candi Sewu. Here, there is a single main temple measuring 12m by 12m, which faces the east direction.

According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture , Candi Bubrah was built by Rakai Panangkaran, a leader during Sailendra dynasty.

Candi Lumbung

Candi Lumbung is a Buddhist temple located north of Prambanan courtyard and south of Bubrah. It has 1 Candi Induk (main temple) and 16 Candi Perwara.

Prambanan Museum

For history buffs, Prambanan Museum is a must visit. It is located at the southeast of Candi Lumbung. Admission is already included in your Prambanan ticket.

Inside, there is a main outdoor hall filled with various traditional musical instruments.

Guide to Visiting Candi Prambanan - Prambanan Temple Museum

The indoor halls display various exhibitions telling the stories of the candi. There is also a miniature of the main Prambanan complex.

Guide to Visiting Candi Prambanan - Prambanan Temple Museum

For a complete experience, I recommend allowing about 3 hours at Prambanan Temple. That’s because the temple compound is so huge, there are 3 other temples outside the main cluster

Tour guide is optional.

Nearby temples around Prambanan are Plaosan Temple, Ratu Boko, Candi Gana and Candi Kalasan.

Best Time to Visit Prambanan Temple

Indonesia has two seasons: a dry season and a rainy season.

The temple of Prambanan can be visited all year round! But the best time to visit Java is during the dry season, from May to October.

The weather is sunny and dry during these months, perfect for sightseeing, hiking, and exploring the Java attractions.

Java Island has a tropical climate, hot and humid, and the average temperature is 27°C all year round.

The busiest time to visit Java is between July and August.  The rainy season in Java runs from November to April.

TIP In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation and tours in advance!

How to Get to Prambanan Temple

To get to Prambanan Temple, you first need to get to Java Island, Indonesia. The plane is the most comfortable and fastest way to get to Java!

Java has several airports. There are many international flights from Singapore or Kuala Lumpur and domestic flights from other parts of Indonesia, such as Jakarta and Bali.

The nearest major city to Prambanan is Yogyakarta, which is easily accessible by flight or train. We arrived by train from  Malang  to Yogyakarta, and the journey took 6-7 hours. Buy your train tickets here.

Yogyakarta has an International Airport , the Yogyakarta Kulon Progo International Airport (airport code YIA).

From Bali, you can fly to Yogyakarta from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (airport code DPS). The flight takes just 1.5 hours, and plane tickets start from 40 USD (without luggage) per person for one way.

TIP Use Skyscanner to find cheap flights to Java, Indonesia.

We have a detailed post on  how to get from Bali to Java  with all the information you need.

Prambanan Temple locations

The distance between Yogyakarta and Candi Prambanan is only 16 km, and the journey takes 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic.

From Yogyakarta, take the Trans Jogja bus 1A from the Mangkubumi bus stop in Malioboro to the Prambanan bus terminal.

After arrival, you can cross the road to reach the temple in about 10 minutes. The Trans Jogja bus usually leaves every 15 minutes, depending on traffic.

Prambanan Temple Sunset Tour, Indonesia

The best way to visit Prambanan Temple is to join a day trip from Yogyakarta.

Alternatively, you can get there by taxi, Grab (similar to Uber), rent a motorbike, or hire a private driver.

We rented a scooter in Yogyakarta and went to Borobudur Temple at 4 AM to catch the most beautiful sunrise in Indonesia.

Important note It is currently not possible to watch the sunrise at Borobudur. But from Setumbu Hill, you can admire the temple at sunrise!

After visiting the Borobudur, you can visit other attractions in Yogyakarta or go straight to the Prambanan. But we think the best time to visit Prambanan Temple is at sunset. (Due to the current opening hours, you cannot watch the sunset at the Prambanan Temple.)

From Borobudur, it is only a 1.5-hour drive to Prambanan.

Although Prambanan Temple is a popular attraction in Indonesia, it is less crowded than Borobudur. Plan to spend 2-3 hours around Prambanan and explore the beautiful temples.

TIP To get the most out of the experience, you can join a guided tour or hire a private guide who will explain the history while walking around.

Where to Stay near Prambanan Temple, Indonesia

Yogyakarta is the perfect base for visiting the temple, as it is only a 30-40 minute drive from the temple of Prambanan.

The city has good restaurants and great places to shop. But the accommodation options are available for all budgets. These are our recommendations.

  • Luxury:   The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta
  • Mid-Range:   The Victoria Hotel Yogyakarta
  • Budget:   Java Villas Boutique Hotel & Resto

Prambanan vs Angkor Wat

One of the most frequently asked questions is which should I visit: Prambanan or Angkor Wat?

Angkor Wat is located in Cambodia, and the Prambanan Temple is in Indonesia.

Both places are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.  Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia, and Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world.

Both of them are among the most important monuments in Southeast Asia, as are the Borobudur Temple in Indonesia and the Bagan Temples in Myanmar.

You can visit two temples of Yogyakarta in one day. But you can spend several days exploring the Angkor Archaeological Park.

We visited most of the important archaeological sites of Southeast Asia, and we think all of them are worth a visit! But our favorite was the Angkor Wat Temple complex.

Candi Prambanan Yogyakarta – Your Complete Guide

Candi Prambanan is located just outside of Yogyakarta, and is one of the most amazing places I have visited in the area so far. In fact, I would have to say that it is one of the most spectacular places that I have visited in ALL of Indonesia. Photos of Candi Prambanan really cannot do it justice. Even though they LOOK incredible, nothing can compare you for what is awaiting you in real life.

Table of Contents

A complete rebuild, years of reconstructive work, ticket prices, get a candi prambanan guide, the main temples, look for different angles, three bonus temples, other things to do at candi prambanan, how to get to candi prambanan, where to stay, have you been to taman sari yet.

About Candi Prambanan

Candi Prambanan is a massive Hindu Temple Complex that was originally constructed in the 8th Century. It is the largest Hindu Temple Site in Indonesia, and the second largest in South East Asia, behind only Angkor Wat. Prambanan is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The complex at Prambanan consists of 240 temples in total, most of which are being reconstructed after severe damage by earthquakes. Most have been completely razed to the ground. These are being painstakingly rebuilt by teams of archaeologists, and the results are amazing.

So far, work on the main structures has been completed, and is now being undertaken on the smaller temples. The three main temples are dedicated to the three gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. They are tall, pointy temples, the center one topping out at an incredible 47 metres!

The rebuild of this amazing complex is painstaking for those involved. Each temple has to be put back together piece by piece. Not unlike a Lego puzzle, and the similarities are astounding. These temples were not held together by rods or bolts. There was no mortar slapped in between the giant blocks. Instead, each individual block was carved to intricately inbed itself into the block next to it. Have a look at the photo below to see what I mean.

Lego Pieces

To hear that the complete and utter damage that was wrought on Candi Prambanan was inflicted by earthquakes is mind boggling. For such large and solid structures, there is not much remaining other than the original building materials. From above, you can see that they were perfectly aligned, and that the complex had an order to it. From ground level, though, all that is visible is ruins.

The temples that have already been reconstructed show how amazing the complex was. I have never seen anything like it, and would give my eye teeth to be able to see it when it is completed. Unfortunately, that won’t happen. This is why…

Each of the SMALL temples takes 1 year to complete reconstruction.

The MEDIUM temples take 2 years to rebuild.

The LARGE temples, take 10 YEARS to rebuild.

At Candi Sewu, which is a neighboring temple that is part of the larger Prambanan complex, it will take a staggering 200 years to complete reconstruction. With that thought in mind, one can only imagine how long it will take to repair the entire complex.

Prambanan Damage

With reconstruction taking so long, I made an inquiry as to why they don’t simply get more teams working on more temples at once. It seemed I could only see several teams (made up of about 6 men) working throughout the massive 39.8 hectares. The answer was simply lack of Government funds, which is a shame for such a unique and incredible Heritage Site.

What to expect at Candi Prambanan

Expect to be blown away! No matter what you know about Candi Prambanan already, and what you have seen in photos, or even from the road, you will still not be prepared. This place is massive, and I will go out on a limb to say that I was even more impressed than I was with nearby Borobudur !

So put on your walking shoes (you will do a bit) and grab your camera, because this is going to be a day out that you will remember forever.

Candi Prambanan at night

When you arrive at Candi Prambanan, you will walk from the car park, up a few stairs toward the ticket office. If the Covid restrictions are still in place, then expect to check in with Pendulilindungi, (or show your vaccination details) get your temperature checks and wash your hands before you hit the ticket queue.

At the ticket office, you will be presented with a couple of options. Firstly, depending on whether you are local, tourist, or have a Kitas, you will pay different prices. Also, you will have the option to include a trip to nearby Ratu Boko as part of the entry price. I highly recommend doing this, and will cover that Complex a little more later in this guide.

candi prambanan entry

Ticket Prices for Candi Prambanan:

  • Approx $35 AUD for tourist on normal visa
  • Approx $5 AUD for local or Kitas Holder
  • Approx $7.50 AUD for local or Kitas Holder for combined Prambanan and Ratu Bokor ticket
  • Unsure of combined ticket for tourist, but saving is big to combine the tickets!

As soon as you walk through the front gate of Candi Prambanan, you will be presented with the option to hire a guide. They sort of jump out of the wood work at you, offering you their services. My suggestions is to GET A GUIDE!

I say this for one reason. They are worth their weight in gold.

At a complex as big as Candi Prambanan, there is SO MUCH you can miss if you don’t have someone showing you around. They will take you to places you didn’t know you could go, and also into places you cannot go WITHOUT a guide. I lost count of how many times we were posing for photos and other visitors were watching us in bewilderment. All because they didn’t have a guide and access to those places.

Candi Prambanan Map

The other thing with a guide is that they know the best places to get photos, and the very best angles. We were struggling with back light, and he showed us a lot better place to get photos from that we wouldn’t have thought of ourselves. Our guide cost us $10 AUD, and I actually ended up tipping him even more. His services were THAT good!

The three main temples of Candi Prambanan are the reasons you are there. They are the major attraction, and what you see in all the photos online. There is SO much more to the entire complex, but the beginning, and the majority of your trip will be spent in and around them.

Walk from the entry gate toward the temples, and you will pass the large white Prambanan sign. Pose for photos here (if you can get it to yourself) and then head toward the smaller gate that provides access to the Temple Complex.

Candi Prambanan sign

At this point you can get some wonderful photos looking up the stairs toward the temples. This is a great spot and one that you will see in every tourist photo of the place. Our guide, however, led us off to the side. Here, you will find some great billboards with information about Candi Prambanan. We didn’t have any need to read it, however, as our guide was a walking encyclopedia. He had been a guide there for 27 years, and there was nothing he didn’t know!

Information signs

Off to the side he also showed us a different spot for photos on the grass among the ruins. This gave us a unique and different perspective to that of all the other visitors that day. He then showed us through the ruins as we took a back path up to the main temples. Along the way he explained about how the blocks all fit together, and how long it took to construct.

The main temples are absolutely MASSIVE, with the center one towering over us at 47 meters tall. This is higher even than Borobudur! The intricacies of the carvings and architecture are astounding. The guide even pointed out the way water runs off it during storms, and how the designs forms fountains that shoot out sideways to dispel the rain water. Amazing.

candi prambanan angles

We spent a lot of time at this spot. Around the back we found it a lot quieter, and the photos came out a lot clearer. there is a nice grassy area and a few trees you can rest under. So take the time to wander around while you are there and really explore the temples from all sides.

You can go inside the temples if they are open. During the Covid Pandemic, the insides were closed. There is not too much to see, but there are some carvings of the Gods. Be aware that it is rather small inside, so be careful if you are claustrophobic.

If you took note of the map on the way in, then you will have noticed that the main temples are not all there is to Candi Prambanan. Exit the main temple complex the opposite way to where you entered, and you will find signs taking you to 3 other temples.

These are a lot smaller, but unique in their own ways. But first, you can decide to get a ride in the train or golf cart. We took the golf cart for $2 AUD each. It was worth it, as it is a kilometre out to the furthest temple from that point. On a hot day, I was happy to pay.

candi sewu

The cart will take you past all three temples. Candi Lumbung, Candi Bumbrah and Candi Sewu.

You can stop if you like, but I definitely advise you to stop and have a good look around the third one, Candi Sewu. “Sewu” means “thousand” and you can see how it got this name. The main temple here is surrounded by many smaller temples, and is quite amazing to walk around.

rebuilding the temples

On the way back you will pass, and find, a few other things you can do. You will pass by the Prambanan Museum, as well as a mini zoo with cute reindeer and other wildlife. If you are of a mind, there is also archery (for some reason) to try your hand at. This seemed so “left field” that I had to give it a go!

Now, head back to the gate, and the car park. If you bought the ticket that includes Ratu Boko, then go and find where to catch the complimentary bus. We, however, just made our own way there by scooter.

About 3 kilometres to the south of Candi Prambanan sits Ratu Boko. I found this place beautiful, and it is a perfect way to wrap up a day at Prambanan. The complex sits on a high plateau with great views. If the day is a clear one, you will get some amazing sunset photos from Ratu Boko.

Ratu Boko

Covering an area of 16 hectares, Ratu Boko isn’t actually a temple, as much as the remains of an ancient settlement. The main areas seem to surround the Kraton (palace) and bathing pools that were utilized by the Princess and other women. As you walk about the large and sprawling complex in the waning light of the day, you cannot help but be awed by its beauty.

There are many places to get some wonderful photos at Ratu Boko. The most popular place is at the top of the main stairway, where there seems to be the remains of some ancient stone door frames, or archways. The outlook from here is amazing, showing views right across to the distant mountains. The archways will perfectly frame the sunset if you are there at the right time.

Ratu Boko pools

Follow the path around from there and you will locate the Kraton ruins, and the beautiful bathing pools. These are all great spots to stop and rest, and I personally sat around at the pools for quite a while taking photos.

Getting to Candi Prambanan is pretty easy. It is located only a short drive out of Yogyakarta, and sits beside the main road. You can find an easy Google Maps location HERE .

Personally I think the best and easiest way to get to Candi Prambanan is to drive or ride yourself. It is very easy to get around Yogyakarta on scooter. If you have your international drivers permit is is not hard to rent a reliable scooter.

Another option is to get yourself a car and driver , although this might be a waste if you hire a driver for the whole day and spend the entire time walking around a temple complex.

The final option is to take a tour. You can get some amazing tours to Candi Prambanan, and even combine it with a tour of Borobudur if you like. I will put a link below to my favorite Prambanan tour.

Candi Prambanan is not too out of the way, and unlike Borobudur is easy to get to from where ever you decide to stay. If you want to be as local as possible, though, my suggestion is definitely the Amaranta Prambanan. It is highly rated, local, and gets a whopping 5 stars on reviews. Click the link below to check it out.

prambanan tour price

If staying local is not a major factor, and you want to visit other places whilst in Yogyakarta, then I would suggest staying in the city itself. Click the link below for a list of accommodation available!

I rate Candi Prambanan extremely high in my list of best places I have visited in Indonesia. Its incredible history, and simple “WOW” factor blew me away. I hope this guide helps you out, and don’t forget to drop me a line or just comment on this article if you have any questions.

As a footnote to my article about Candi Prambanan, I just HAVE to mention Taman Sari Water Castle. This is a place that I absolutely loved the first time I visited Yogyakarta, and I go back every time I visit the city. Do yourself a favor and get along to check out how the Sultanate entertained themselves (once upon a time) and learn a bit about the history of Yogyakarta.

prambanan temple

Prambanan Temple , also known as Roro Jonggrang Temple, is one of the greatest architectural wonders of Hinduism in Indonesia. Located in the Klaten area, about 17 kilometers from the city center of Yogyakarta, Prambanan Temple amazes visitors with its extraordinary beauty and complexity. Dubbed the “Taj Mahal of Indonesia,” this temple complex offers a harmonious blend of architectural beauty, Hindu mythological stories, and a thick historical feel.

History of Prambanan Temple

Foto

Prambanan Temple was built in the 9th century AD during the reign of the Sanjaya Dynasty. At that time, Hinduism was proliferating on Java island, and they needed a magnificent shrine to worship their gods. Prambanan Temple is dedicated to the three main gods in Hinduism, namely Trimurti: Brahma (the god of creation), Vishnu (the god of preservation), and Shiva (the god of destruction).

This temple complex originally consisted of about 240 temples, but with the passage of time and a great earthquake in the 16th century, many temples suffered severe damage. Today, only eight main temples still stand majestically, with the Shiva Temple (Shiva Temple) being the largest among them. The prominent uniqueness of Prambanan Temple is its primary structure, which consists of three main temples facing each other, each dedicated to Trimurti.

  • Shiva Temple: The Shiva Temple is the largest in the complex and symbolizes power and immortality. The temple is about 47 meters high and contains a statue of Shiva, the blue-skinned god of destruction, with raised eyebrows and a stern expression. The Shiva statue is surrounded by statues of supernatural beings, such as gana and apsara, which add a magical and mystical impression to this temple.
  • Brahma Temple: Brahma Temple is dedicated to the creator god in Hinduism, Brahma. This temple has a distinctive feature in the form of a statue of Brahma with four faces, each facing the cardinal directions. Unfortunately, the upper part of this temple suffered severe damage, and only a few terraced pounded remain that visitors can see.
  • Wisnu Temple: Wisnu Temple, as the name suggests, is dedicated to the guardian deity in Hinduism, namely Wisnu. This temple stands out for its high-terraced terraces and is decorated with beautiful reliefs depicting mythological stories, including the stories of Ramayana and Krishna.

Other Interesting Things at Prambanan Temple

  • Prambanan Temple Museum: To get a deeper understanding of the history and meaning of Prambanan Temple, you can visit the Prambanan Temple Museum. Here, you can see a collection of historical statues and artifacts found during the restoration process of the temple.
  • Religious Ceremonies: Even though Prambanan Temple is a tourist destination, the local Hindu community still uses this holy place for certain religious ceremonies. You might witness a dazzling religious procession that reflects rich traditions and culture if you’re lucky.
  • Instagramable Photo Spots: This temple complex offers many fantastic photo spots, especially at sunset or sunrise. One of them is a photo spot with stunning temples in the background, creating the perfect moment to be immortalized in memories.
  • Shopping and Culinary Tourism: Around the Prambanan Temple area, you will find a souvenir market that sells various kinds of handicrafts and souvenirs typical of Central Java. You can also taste delicious local culinary dishes at the food stalls around the temple.
