wilson fg tour v4 lofts

Forged from 8620 carbon steel for soft feel, the Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons have a head size, blade length, offset and topline that are nearly identical to the FG Tour V2 irons that came out three years ago.

The biggest difference between the two sets is the incorporation of 18 grams of tungsten in the sole of the FG Tour V4’s 3- through 7-iron. The heavier metal lowers the center of gravity in the clubs that many better players want to hit higher.

“Players have told us that they want to make the ball stop faster, but we really don’t want to do that with spin, because that can make the ball balloon,” said Michael Vrska, Wilson Golf’s director of research and development. “The other thing you can do is make the ball come down on a steeper angle. The tungsten allowed us to increase the launch angle without increasing spin.”

Wilson said the combination of a higher launch angle and no increased spin yields a few extra yards of distance, but shots come down more vertically and should stop faster on the green.

Wilson also made the face of the FG Tour V4 irons 11 percent thinner outside the hitting area, which allowed designers to shift weight to the heel and toe. The moment of inertia is 3 percent higher than the previous model’s, which should make the FG Tour V4 irons more stable. But these are definitely better players’ clubs, far from the most forgiving clubs Wilson makes.

“We’ve modernized the look a little bit,” Vrska said. “The V2 was a little bit sharp and hard-edged. The V4 is a little bit more round, but it’s still a Wilson-looking iron. We did some work on the sole based on feedback form the PGA Tour. Kevin Streelman has been grinding his V2’s in a certain way for a while, and the V4s are pretty close to his clubs, right out of the box.”

Because these clubs are designed for better players, the lofts are very traditional. The standard set includes 4-iron (24 degrees) through gap wedge (51 degrees).

When they arrive in stores Jan. 15, 2015, the Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons will come standard with True Temper Dynamic Gold DG Pro steel shafts for $899.99.

REVIEW: Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 utility iron

wilson fg tour v4 lofts

Call me crazy, but for the longest time, I've wanted to have a 2-iron in my bag.

Maybe it was the pre-teen in me that idolized Tiger Woods ' perfect stinger.

I also love playing with old equipment -- I once gamed a bag from 1969 for half of a summer, for crying out loud -- so putting a modern version of a club disappearing from bags in favor of hybrids fits my psyche.

What I know for sure is that I'm not really a hybrid guy. They work, they're great, and I like them well enough. But I love swinging an iron. So I wanted something stronger than a 3-iron that I could put out there some 250 yards, practically at will, so I could manage my game around the course.

When I met with Wilson Golf at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, I saw what I wanted. The Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 utility iron appealed to me right away. It looks like an iron, but it has the extra mass behind it like a hybrid (and more mass behind it than an old-fashioned 1-iron). I took a couple of swings with the 18-degree model.

The utility iron has tungsten weighting in the toe for forgiveness and to help a player get back to square. A sole weight moves down the center of gravity compared to a regular, ole 2-iron. The 455 Carpenter steel face is thinned out to deliver maximum distance.

The Wilson folks were gracious enough to send one to me so I could put it in the bag for my annual golf trip to Orlando in February.

wilson fg tour v4 lofts

The verdict? I like it a lot. The sound from the hollow head is different than a traditional iron, and it doesn't have the potential metalwood-like sound of hybrids. It's somewhere in between and a little hard to describe. There's definite feedback on each shot, even though the face is fairly forgiving.

I've played six rounds with the FG Tour V4 2-iron, and I've yet to miss a fairway with it. It took maybe 10 swings to get used to the weighting, both of the head and the stock Mitsubishi Kuro Kage Black 90 graphite shaft, but it's very easy to hit. I can hit it with a couple of different ball flights, going either with a mid-height shot that will run a little or my usual higher ball flight that can still roll but not as much. Either way, the club goes about 240-250 yards for me off the tee. On a 400-yard tight par 4, that's all I want in life. Give me an 8-iron into the green.

I'm also becoming more comfortable hitting the 2-iron from the fairway, particularly on par 5s. Until the last year or so, I've never been much of a fairway-wood-from-the-fairway player, so I've used hybrids and long irons to advance the ball. Sometimes, I need a little extra than what the 3-iron or 3-hybrid could give me. This 2-iron can get me that 250-yard shot on occasion that makes a 550-yard hole reachable without that big of a sweat. I'm still working out how to hit shots with the same flighting as off the tee, but, by late Spring, it's going to be a huge part of my bag.

I realized that a 2-iron isn't for everyone. In fact, I'm running into a burning building while everyone is fleeing toward the safety of hybrids -- which, by the way, are starting to look more like utility irons in some cases. But, if you want to try something a little different and have a reliable club that can put you in the fairway time and again, the Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 utility iron may be for you. They're available for $180 each.

Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons

The Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons continue the brand's forged iron heritage in the shape of a better player iron set and a new utility iron

Wilson Golf has enhanced its acclaimed better player  FG Tour range by adding the new Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons and utility iron.

The new V4 irons replace the FG Tour V2 irons, and will sit alongside the FG Tour M3 irons in Wilson Staff's 2015 range.

Having been designed for, and already put in play by, tour players like Padraig Harrington and Kevin Streelman, the new forged irons offer exceptional feel and greater ball flight control.

After vigorous testing of prototypes, Streelman, who enjoyed two PGA Tour victories with his previous V2 irons, told GM: “The first prototype Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons I put in my hand confirmed we’re making adjustments to the right things."

Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons

The new iron set incorporates an 18-gram tungsten sole weight in the 3-7 irons that lowers the centre of gravity and increases the launch angle without adding unwanted spin.

This results in greater height on long and mid-iron shots, producing a steeper angle of descent so you can hold firm greens and attack tight pin positions.

The upper portion of the face, where better players very rarely strike the ball, has been thinned by 11% in order to reposition mass where it can optimise launch, spin and Moment of Inertia to add off-centre stability.

Weight has also been moved lower and towards the heel and toe of the irons to improve forgiveness, although most of the mass remains concentrated in the impact area to maintain a solid blade-like feel and provide workability on strikes near the centre of the face.

Precision milled grooves on the forged 8620 carbon steel also deliver more spin control and consistency.

Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 utility iron

The iron set will also be joined by a utility iron designed to help better players hit long shots into greens and control ball flight in the wind.

Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 utility iron

Featuring similar cosmetics to the V4 irons, they incorporate a 7g adjustable weight in the sole that lets you tune your ball flight to suit course conditions or reduce any gaps you have in the top end of your bag.

The FG Tour V4 utility iron also has similar lofts, lies and swing weights for easy transition from iron to utility club, but the shaft lengths are longer as well as the blades, which are also lighter.

The soles and toplines are also wider and slightly more offset to add workability and forgiveness.

The extremely thin, responsive face is made from the strongest stainless steel available, which helps the ball spring off the face faster for improved ball speeds and distance.

This premium face material also freed up weight so that mass could be moved low and to the toe for an optimised centre of gravity, supported by a 9g tungsten weight placed in the toe to eliminate any draw bias in the head.

Specifications

The V4 iron set (4-PW £549) features True Temper Dynamic Gold DG Pro shafts that promote responsiveness and trajectory. A premium nickel-chrome finish plating and Lamkin Crossline Black grips complete the set.

The V4 utility iron (2, 3 and 4 at £119 each) features a  90g MRC Kuro Kage Black graphite shaft with a smooth bend profile, soft mid-section and a slightly stiffer tip and butt section in light, regular and stiff flexes.

The Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons and utility iron will be available from January 2015.

Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 Irons Review

Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 Irons Review

The Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 fall into the category of better-player irons and they retail for $900 in the steel version. After taking them for a spin on the golf course, I can definitely say that they’re among the best irons available on the market, obviously, for the better players. They look awesome and they also feel great, not to mention their loads of forgiveness, especially in the long irons. Talking about design, Wilson did a great job with these babies.

I especially enjoyed the minimal offset, the thin soles and top lines, not to mention the classy appearance in the cavity. The Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 oozes style and they are more refined when compared to the previous generations. In terms of performance, the FG Tour V4 feels very soft at ball impact and it provides you with great feedback, i.e. you’ll always know how the ball was hit. Precision and forgiveness are maybe the main attributes of these outstanding irons . Wilson’s secret weapon in manufacturing the V4 is the tungsten weighs located into the soles of some of the irons (4-7), greatly improving the launching trajectory of the ball and also retaining a penetrating ball flight. Believe me, these are not just another set of better player irons, au contraire. The DG Pro is an excellent stock shaft which also contributes decisively when it comes to the higher launch, but without ballooning (especially in the short irons). What else I discovered? Well, the V4 irons are solid performers in every aspect and they will never let you down. If you want a piece of golf gear that gives you outstanding control over the ball and sufficient forgiveness in the process, without compromising anything in terms of feel or looks, the Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons are the answer to your prayers.

Review: Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 Utility Iron

wilson fg tour v4 lofts

On the course it definitely plays more like an iron, than a wood.  I could hit it much easier out of the rough than a typical hybrid.  Off the tee it was about the same and off the fairway it was a club that you can go after and take a divot like you would an iron.  You can compress it rather than sweep it. There are 2 main difference between the Wilson FG Tour V4 utility iron and a wood style hybrid.  This has much less draw bias compared to most hybrids.  That is always the knock on hybrids is their tendency to hit draws.  The other biggest difference I found was the consistency of distance.  Typically my hybrid hits in a range of yardage, 200 – 215 even at times squeezing out 225.  But the Wilson FG Tour V4 utility iron almost always hits the same 200-205 yardage.  The distance circle was much tighter.

Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 Irons Review

  • on November 30, 2015

50 Words or Less

The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons are great clubs with performance that would be beneficial to any player.

Wilson FG Tour F5 Irons-9

Introduction

Our own Matt Saternus is a longtime fan of Wilson Staff, but I have only recently started dipping my toe back into the pool.  As a kid, I swore by the Wilson Staff Titanium golf balls and my Wilson 7 wood.  The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons were my first introduction back into world of Wilson Staff irons, and, as I’ve experienced with other Wilson Staff reviews I’ve done, I was very pleasantly surprised .

Wilson FG Tour F5 Irons-3

From address, the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons have a similar look to a lot of other irons in the industry that fall into the category of a player’s iron with a lot of built in forgiveness – or as Wilson refers to it, a “crossover” iron.  The length of the head  from heel to toe is somewhat compact, the top line is a medium size, and the offset is very minimal.   Wilson Staff heard the feedback on the FG Tour M3 – that it looked too much like a game improvement club – and made sure they fixed that with the F5.

The cavity has Wilson Staff branding highlighted by the Wilson Staff shield.  Also visible in the cavity is the Stabilizing Bar which is used to support the thin forged face .  This helps make the face a bit more forgiving while still maintain workability in the golf shot.

Wilson FG Tour F5 Irons-2

Sound & Feel

I found the the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons to be very quiet when striking the ball.  The sound is a muted pop off the face.   When you miss the sweet spot, you get a little more of that rocky click that most of us are all too familiar with.  Most of the sound comes from the thump of the turf at impact.

Solid shots feel soft and pure , and where mishits don’t necessarily feel like you rocked the golf ball, they don’t sting your hands with punishment for a bad shot.  The F5 is very easy to control throughout the swing and is one of those clubs where your hands and body won’t be paying for it after a long practice session.

Wilson FG Tour F5 Irons-13

Performance

First and foremost, I have to tell you that I think the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons have to be one of the easiest clubs to hit well in all of my years of experience .  Wilson utilizes a technology they call “Speed Sole” which is designed to make the transition area between face and sole as thin as possible.  This is designed to “expand the sweet spot lower in the face for faster ball speeds in the long and mid irons.”  Now, I can’t tell you that I necessarily went “yep, that’s the difference maker” but there aren’t many 4 irons I’ve had an easier time hitting pure in my lifetime.

With the Wilson Staff F5’s, I think it is imperative to make sure you have the right shaft for your game.  The stock Dynamic Gold XP was too soft for me and caused a lot of pop ups.  Once I tested the F5’s with a shaft better fit for me, I had a really strong, piercing ball flight with good distance and tight dispersion .  What does this mean in layman’s terms?  Predictability and consistency – the hallmarks of a solid set of irons.

Wilson FG Tour F5 Irons-1

Take it from me, if you’re sleeping on Wilson Staff golf equipment, you need to stop now.  My biggest take away from this  Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 iron review was that these are some serious irons  that are as good as, if not better than, a lot of other big names in the game.  If you’re in the market for a new set of irons, make sure you give the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 a fair look.  Hit them with a shaft appropriate for your swing, and you won’t be disappointed.

very good looking club-I play W/S irons. No mention of what shaft these new models have ?

' src=

I mentioned it in the Performance section:

“With the Wilson Staff F5’s, I think it is imperative to make sure you have the right shaft for your game. The stock Dynamic Gold XP was too soft for me and caused a lot of pop ups.”

' src=

I currently play the M3 irons and love the feel of these irons. The ball feels soft off the face and are longer than my previous irons. I had planned to buy the F5 but after playing and buying the M3 irons, I am satisfied with feel and play ability . Wilson make tremendous irons and I am sure the F5 will be another awesome set. I am surprised more players dont play Wilson Staff Irons.

' src=

Bill or Matt can you comment on the difference between the two? I know Matt did the M3 irons review, but I would be interested to see if there is a huge difference between the two iron sets, possibly if Matt could comment as he played the v2’s for a couple seasons and he did the m3 review.

thanks, hey and thanks for all your reviews and responses to comments, love this site

' src=

I haven’t spent much time with the F5 irons at all, but I haven’t heard a single bad thing. My understanding is that compared to the M3, the F5 is a bit better looking and a touch more forgiving.

' src=

Like your reviews

' src=

just ordered myself a set of these after testing them at the local pro shop and I couldn’t agree more. There certainly easy to launch but give that better player look. Its funny though how shaft is almost personal to the individual rather than based on table of swing speeds. I swing a driver up close to 110 and yet I find that I like the softer shaft stiff flex in my irons.

' src=

f5 re shaft with true temper XP 95 WOW did this really change this iron for me. Should have been the stock shaft to begin with.

wilson fg tour f5

wilson fg tour f5

Looks. From address, the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons have a similar look to a lot of other irons in the industry that fall into the category of a player's iron with a lot of built in forgiveness - or as Wilson refers to it, a "crossover" iron. The length of the head from heel to toe is somewhat compact, the top line is a medium size, and the offset is very minimal.

Today, Wilson is riding a 4-year wave of irons ranging from the solid (the C-11's, C-100's and D-100's) to the sublime (the forged FG Tour series: the 100 blades and the V2 & V4 player's cavity backs). By any measure, since 2012 Wilson Staff's recent offerings - from Super Game Improvement to Player's clubs - have been as good as anybody's. Wilson's market share is sneaking ...

Looks. For all intents and purposes, the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 hybrid is a simple looking hybrid on the smaller end of the spectrum with a basic glossy black crown. As far as hybrids go, that's exactly what I tend to look for. The compact size frames the ball nicely. When you flip the club over, you will find the black, yellow, and silver ...

LOOKS, ETC. From the top down the F5 is a classic, glossy-black pear shaped driver. It's fairly deep-faced, and the 460CC head has a chemically etched crown. Wilson says the etching saves weight that can be redistributed to help with launch and spin. There's a lot happening on the sole, with the black accented with swatches of FG Tour gold ...

Carry Distance: 153.7 yds. The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons will fit the biggest segment of golfers out there. Their feel and looks will appeal to low-handicap golfers while their performance and forgiveness will fit the higher-handicap golfers. Wilson has really stepped up their game in 2016 and these irons should be a great fit for the most ...

Sound & Feel. The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 fairway wood announces impact with a deep "crack.". It isn't very loud, but the low tones are a bit surprising if you're expecting the typical high pitched fairway wood "tink.". Interestingly, for a players club, the sound doesn't change too much from mishits to pure strikes.

The Wilson Staff FG Tour irons have been forged from soft carbon steel to offer a more responsive feel. The wider sole and cavity back lowers the centre of gravity to help improve ball striking. The classic design is based on the famous F17 iron model created by Bob Mandrella. These irons should suit golfers who prefer the feel of a forged club ...

The FG Tour F5 driver will be available in two lofts (9, 10.5 degrees), while the fairway woods (13.5, 15, 17) and hybrids (17, 20, 23 degrees) come in three lofts each. All three metalwoods will ...

Tech: Wilson say the F5 features a tour-preferred head shape and hot Carpenter 455 Maraging steel face to serve as a perfect long range solution for the feel player. Low and forward sole weighting decreases spins whilst maintaining an optimal launch angle for maximum carry distance. Our verdict:

Designed for the Crossover player, the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons are perfectly forged for soft feel while incorporating distance-enhancing technology in the long and mid irons for enhanced playability.

There's a decent sized cavity back so forgiveness and drop off in ball speed and carry distance were very consistent. We really liked the satin finish which gives a different appearance and eliminates glare and we felt pretty confident of hitting a good number of greens with the F5. Loft wise it's 3-4deg weaker (which is a club different ...

Performance wise, the WILSON STAFF FG TOUR F5 is an interesting piece of golf gear, that kind of "chill out" iron, being incredibly easy to hit well, thus a true confidence builder. The ball shoots off like a rocket, with a piercing-strong ball flight, nice distance and tight dispersion. In layman's terms, that translates into consistency ...

Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons. Completing the new Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 family are the new F5 irons, which use the same Speed Sole technology debuted in the Wilson Staff D200 irons, created for players who desire a blend of forged feel and pure distance.. This is possible thanks to a thin face-to-sole transition that expands the sweet spot lower in the face for faster ball speeds and longer ...

The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 has a deep face, which should inspire confidence at address. It has an uncluttered aesthetic on the crown, while the sole lets you know there is some cutting-edge ...

The 3-wood is a very good performing 3-wood. With the lower and forward weight on the sole to move the CG they have a very easy launching, but strong flighted 3-wood. Wilson has been killing it in terms of looks recently. The Staff FG Tour F5 lines looks as good as anything. The 3-wood shape is a very traditional kind of pear shaped head.

Club Head Speed: 102.9 mph. Ball Speed: 152.8 mph. Total Distance: 272.6 yds. Carry Distance: 259.2 yds. The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 Driver is by far their best driver to date. It looks great, feels good and has modern technology to keep up with the others. Like all drivers, it is best to get fit, I think the Fubuki shaft might not be ideal for ...

The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 driver is an early contender for the sleeper driver of 2016. Simple, meaningful adjustability, solid forgiveness, and very accurate. Introduction. If the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 driver had a different name on it, let's say TaylorMade, I think the forums would be ablaze with praise. There would be lines on release ...

The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons offer smooth lines, little off-set, cavity back forgiveness and excellent forged feel as you swing the club. Dubbed "crossover" irons by Wilson, these clubs bridge the gap between players irons and game-improvement irons. At Hurricane Golf, you can shop and save up to 60 percent off retail prices! So, before you hit those perfect shots with your Wilson Staff ...

Wilson Staff has just listed a new prototype driver with the USGA. It's called the FG Tour F5. Here's what we know: The F5 has been in development for a little over a year. Wilson Staff Tour players have been testing the F5 for about 6 months now, providing input on look, sound, feel and performance. At least one Wilson Staff Tour pro ...

VAN CLIBURN: PIANIST RETURNS WITH MOSCOW PHILHARMONIC FOR 1ST S.L. CONCERT IN 17 YEARS.

By deseret news , william s. goodfellow, music critic.

The two most frequently asked questions around here these days are: (1) Can I still get tickets to Tuesday's Van Cliburn concert? And (2) do you think there's going to be a Van Cliburn concert?

As to the first, tickets to his Tuesday, July 26, appearance with the Moscow Philharmonic were gone within days of being placed on sale last month. The Utah Symphony box office is still taking names for a waiting list, but that is currently up to 10 pages. So the chances of getting in at this point are slim indeed. And the second? Well, that's a little more complex.

So far the Texas pianist's tour, his first in 16 years, has not been trouble-free. Apart from a memory slip in the Rachmaninoff Third Piano Concerto, one gathers things went well enough at the "preview" concert two weeks ago in San Diego. Not so the July 11 followup at the Hollywood Bowl.

There Cliburn, a day short of his 60th birthday, complained of dizziness following a first half that consisted of him narrating Copland's "Lincoln Portrait" and soloing in - what else? - the Tchaikovsky First Piano Concerto. The result was that, following intermission, he scrapped the Rachmaninoff concerto altogether, instead performing four shorter solo pieces, all standard Cliburn encores.

At the time, many were inclined to write it off as the kind of thing that happens to a lot of concert artists, even those in the superstar category. Cliburn, we were told, had had an unexpectedly tiring weekend, including what he described as a 15- to 20-minute soundcheck that "turned into a full two-hour rehearsal." He also cannot have been insensitive to the panoramic acoustics of the bowl, with its 14,000-plus audience, or a national media blitz that reportedly even brought the roar of helicopters into the picture.

But the fact remains that such things are not unprecedented in Cliburn's career. Even before the 11-year performing hiatus (or "intermission," as he calls it) that made his return to the concert platform in 1989 such big news, he was known to show up late for performances.

One such delay in 1965 caused a last-minute reshuffling of his National Symphony program. A few months before, he had also been late for a recital in Chicago. And as recently as three years ago I remember waiting nearly an hour for him to come onstage for a solo recital in Kalamazoo, Mich.

I also think it's significant that, whatever the vagaries of that weekend, subsequent concerts on his current tour have kept to the altered Hollywood Bowl format.

That means that, contrary to what the naysayers were predicting, he has gone ahead with tour dates in Dallas and St. Louis and, as of this writing, is expected to do the same with Denver and Salt Lake City. But the program no longer includes the Rachmaninoff Third, featuring him only in the Copland, the Tchaikovsky and, presumably, another selection of solo pieces.

With some artists, that might diminish public interest, but not Van Cliburn. After all, people - and not just regular concertgoers - have been beating down the doors to hear him play the Tchaikovsky concerto ever since it, together with the Rachmaninoff, swept him to victory in the 1958 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

That victory, in turn, swept him to an overnight prominence accorded no other pianist before or since. Given the political climate between the United States and the Soviet Union at the time, I expect any American's victory in that particular competition would have made headlines. But the cover of Time magazine and a ticker-tape parade through Manhattan? These are the kinds of accolades previously reserved for the likes of Lindbergh, not Liszt or even Horowitz.

A lesser artist might have crumbled under the pressure. But, to his credit, the 23-year-old pianist from Kilgore, Texas, delivered the goods not only personally but musically. Politics, Cliburn professed, were not his domain. He loved the Russian people the same way he loved his fellow Texans, for their warmth, kindness and generosity.

In much the same fashion, he quickly won over the rest of America. Just as his playing, with its warmth and emotional expanse, had even the competition judges embracing him in Moscow, so his homecoming performances touched audiences and critics alike.

For here was a competition winner who didn't play like a competition winner. Instead of going for speed and volume, he usually went for the music's poetry, letting his still-impressive keyboard sound ride naturally above the orchestra. I will remain convinced to my dying day that this, as much as anything else, is what made his recording of the Tchaikovsky go platinum. Publicity, after all, can only do so much.

Whether his subsequent career has been all platinum is another matter.

Certainly by the mid-1970s the strain had begun to tell. Though Cliburn always has had a broader repertoire than the Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff concertos, those were the pieces the public and, by extension, concert presenters clamored to hear from him time and again. I remember his last appearance here, in 1977, when he once again found the magic in the Tchaikovsky, but not without a fair number of mistakes. According to biographer Howard Reich, even his record producers noticed the old bite was missing and, though still in his early 40s, he seemed tired.

So, like so many other pianists of his generation, he dropped out, though maybe not for the same reasons. With Fleisher, Janis and Graffman, it was physical problems. With Cliburn it seems to have been emotional. Eventually he settled with his mother in Fort Worth to be near the piano competition that, since 1962, has borne his name.

An inveterate night owl, he was not invisible during those years. But most of his time was apparently spent at home with his music, his books and his poetry. As he told one interviewer, "To feel life, this is terribly important to me."

To some, this would seem a strange way to do it. However, in 1987 Cliburn broke his self-imposed exile to perform at a White House dinner honoring the Gorbachevs. The response was positive enough that 1 1/2 years later he made his first public appearance in more than a decade with the Philadelphia Orchestra, again in the Tchaikovsky concerto, along with the Liszt E flat major, followed by an enthusiastically received tour of the Soviet Union.

At least it was enthusiastically received by the public. Later I spoke with a Russian musician who had heard and loved Cliburn's playing in 1958. What, I asked him, was it like in 1989? "The shell without the crab," he said sadly, and to some extent that was what I had heard in 1991 in Kalamazoo.

There, interspersed with a lot of talk, was the same quietly majestic keyboard presence, and sound, that had held the world captive in 1958 (though, for what it is worth, his first "Tonight Show" appearance had taken place three years earlier). What was not always present was the inner poetry that had, for me, lifted his playing even in the years when he was gradually letting his concert schedule run out of steam.

Oh, it was still there, but too often compromised by an occasional rhythmic and emotional slackness and a tendency to go for the obvious, something likewise true of his sentimentally long-winded speechifying.

Nor am I the only one to have been saying so. A review of a recent Tchaikovsky concerto performance in Houston described his playing as "ferociously compelling at one moment and technically troubled at the next." Some of the Hollywood Bowl reviews took a similar tack, the one in USA Today placing much of the blame on the orchestra and its conductor, Vassily Sinaisky.

In one important respect, Tuesday's concert will be very different from that. According to Bruce Granath of Space Agency Concerts and Theatricals, the Salt Lake group that helped put the entire 16-city tour together, Abravanel Hall, with its 2,800 seats, is "by almost 1,500 seats the smallest venue on the tour."

That means Utahns will get to hear Cliburn in more intimate surroundings than his free concert in Chicago's Grant Park last month that, according to some estimates, drew as many as 350,000 people. (Reportedly he had originally requested the Salt Lake Tabernacle.)

But as to what they will hear - well, I'll be as interested to discover that as anyone.

The FG Tour V4 irons are forged from 8620 carbon steel, which is unusual.
