Highlights: Seal was great. The first part was around 10 songs from the Standards album (but not my favourite, I’m beginning to see the light, which I have on vinyl from the early 60’s by Eugenie Baird). All well performed and in good voice - I was a little concerned having seen his slot on Strictly Come Dancing; it was not convincing; but no worries here. And then the transition to his main hits...he became far more animated, going into the crowd, performing and singing really well and getting everyone up..We thought he felt much more at home, understandably. But he is a class act still with great presence. A good balance

Lowlights: what a terrible venue. It was freezing cold and everyone kept coats, scarves, hats & gloves on just about. The ushers ran about trying to get everyone seated and move the queues along. The seating, well! 114€ a ticket to sit on some chairs they've picked up from a school refectory - and worse, around 12 rows back, we were on the flat, so once people stood up we were also forced to stand like it or not. Also meaning we had to watch through a forest of arms with phones in their hands recording everything. The concert was supposed to start at 8pm; a guy came on did 5/6 songs and disappeared around 8:25, whereupon we sat, not the 5 minutes we all expected, but till 9 before he appeared. People were really ratty, with slow clapping, ironic cheeers when a roadie checked an instrument for the umpteenth time. Someone made the sound of the Dax band harking back to the old 5 Nations and got a great cheer. Good he didn’t release the cockerels, but at least that would have been worth it. All to no avail, we sat there freezing. Not a place to go back to through choice this. This also meant that Seal had to deal with all the grumpiness which he did very well, chatting to everyone, speaking Fraench and making lighthearted comments

9/10 for Seal and a very tight band - although during the second part the bass drum made such a vibration it was quite disturbing; fortunately they sorted that out. Nul points for La Seine Musicale; they need to go along to the U Arena and see how its done - a real professional operation there

What an incredible concert! What an amazing entertainer! It is more than enough that Seal has one of the most iconic and uniquely soulful voices on the planet; but he went above and beyond during this show. He wooed the audience, leaving the stage several times to wander deep into the crowd and sing/share his songs with throngs of adoring fans standing around him and cheering him on. He allowed the audience to do more than "watch a concert", rather he brought us all into the show with him and included us in the heartfelt emotion of his amazing songs. The show was personal, intimate, unifying and perfect! The Mountain Winery Venue is one of the best places to see a show in all of the San Francisco Bay Area. When you combine a Big Time Performer like Seal with a small and intimate venue like Mountain Winery, you are destined for a truly special and totally memorable evening! "Kiss from a Rose" was electrifying; "Prayer for the Dying" oozed with emotion, "Killer" and "Crazy" had me leaping out of my seat. Seal's "new" songs, which he performed early in the night, were so richly personal that I rushed out and bought his latest CD immediatly following the show. Thanks Henry Olusegun Adeola Samuel for a great night of entertainment; one I won't soon forget!!

Seal was such an awesome singer and really enjoyed his concert from beginning to the end. He played all of my favorite songs such as "Crazy" and "Kiss from a Rose". The audience was really grooving and moving to the music throughout the whole concert and they really got up and showed the passion they have for his music.

Seal as you can see really loves to perform and just allow everyone to enjoy his music as much as he loves to create it. The special effects and visualization were seriously incredible as well. They went very well with all his music and were awesome to look at and enjoy during his performance.

I got up one time and started singing during his "crazy" song and felt as if I was tripping on some acid as I sang and watched the incredible visualizations they had playing on the huge screen in the background. The venue was really nice and I enjoyed the seats when I sat down they gave me a break from standing and were very comfortable.

Although I'm sure not very many people care about the seats they do help at times. The concert was really great and I loved all the sounds and music he played along with the musicians he had playing with him.

This is the 3rd time seeing Seal and as always, he doesn't disappoint. His voice, song list, charisma, just awesome and gets the crowd going. Now the one thing that was quite exceptional about this concert was, earlier on during the day he met a girl called Poppy busking in the centre of Manchester. He ended up befriending her and sang with her drawing quite a crowd. After that he was speaking to her and low and behold, she opened the concert for him before he came on singing her own songs. I cant think of any other artist that has ever done that. I hope that has helped to make her dreams come true and any talent scouts spot her. He also had a guy called Rhys Lewis who was on before Poppy as well, he was awesome. No music published as yet to buy, but defo gonna keep an eye out for him. All in all was probably one of the best experiences as well as concerts, as Seal had been filming the events with Poppy on his facebook site live throughout the day so a lot of us saw the day progressing. Absolutely loved it, see u next time Seal

I have been a Seal fan since the beginning of his singing career. I really appreciate him giving a performance outdoors instead of indoors. The outdoor concert is more comfortable and enjoyable. His performance was outstanding, songs sung great sounding just like his albums. I really love the aucostic guitar performance. Seal is a very talented man who gave an outstanding performance.

Beautiful Concert and atmosphere!! First time @ Red Rocks Amphitheater-Corrine & Seal and the mountain scenery blew my mind. Not to mention the light rain and beautiful music made it all mystical. Red Rocks is a beautiful place to visit. I will definitely be visiting again. Really astonishing place to hav concerts and over look the low and middle foot hills!!!

The concert was amazing. Seal is a great artist. I highly recommend his live performances. We had an awesome night at the Ruth Eckerd. Thank you Seal! He sang all his great hits. The sound was amazing. The size of the theater was very goo for this kind of concerts.

The best of the new from the Standards album or the first half of the show followed by a fine selection of greatest hits.

Seal was on great form. His voice showing no signs of diminishing with age. This was our third time seeing him and it will not be the last

It was a good show but for as much money as we spent it was not worth it. He only played from 8:30-10:15. There were no encores. He spoke a lot and his voice was not tip top (because of a cold I presume).

The 30TH Anniversary Tour will commemorate three decades of his landmark self-titled debut album Seal (1991) and eponymous follow-up Seal II (1994). He will be performing the records in their entirety for the first time, delivering a set highlighted by classic chart-topping anthems such as "Crazy," "Future Love Paradise," "Killer," and "Kiss From A Rose." Expect soul staples and standards peppered throughout the set, showcasing the full spectrum of his incredible repertoire.

Seal also performed his iconic hit "Kiss From A Rose" last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Last fall, he reissued Seal as the 4-CD/2-LP SEAL: DELUXE EDITION complete with rarities, a 12"x12" hardcover book that includes never-before-published photos and liner notes courtesy of Jim Farber, a previously unreleased 13-track concert performance, and more, with all music impeccably remastered by Trevor Horn.

The set has been widely acclaimed: American Songwriter celebrated the set's "incredible dance remixes," while Paste proclaimed it one of "The 20 Best Album Reissues of 2022," writing, "Looking back three decades later, Seal's combination of pop, funk, rock and dance hit harder than we might have realized at the time."

Seal notably reached RIAA platinum status in the United States, cracking the Top 30 of the Billboard 200. In the UK, it earned a double-platinum certification and captured #1 on the UK Album Charts. Describing the magic of this debut, Pitchfork likened it to "a vast, multi-sensory explosion of color and texture, a voice giving voice to something beautiful."

Don't miss what promises to be an unforgettable tour in honor of this landmark epic. Be on the lookout for more from Seal in 2023.

Wielding one of the most identifiable voices of all-time, Seal has left an indelible imprint on pop, R&B, soul, and dance music. Along the way, he has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, generated over 1 billion streams, and garnered four GRAMMY® Awards, three BRIT Awards, Two Ivor Novello Awards, and one MTV VMA. As a versatile and vital force throughout popular culture, his catalog encompasses ubiquitous anthems such as "Killer," "Crazy," and "Kiss From A Rose," which toppled the Billboard Hot 100 at #1, scored GRAMMY® Awards for "Record of the Year" and "Song of the Year" and adorned his quadruple-platinum 1994 epic, Seal II.

In retrospect, Stereogum likened it to a "radio wave sent out across the universe from a much, much prettier planet." In addition to appearing in films by iconic directors such as Spike Lee and the late Joel Schumacher, his music has been celebrated with covers by Alanis Morissette, Bastille, and George Michael, to name a few.

Speaking to his enduring influence, Seal notably appeared in John Hamburg's Me Time alongside Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg, The Lonely Island's cult classic Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping, Tyler Perry's The Passion, America's Got Talent, and The Masked Singer. Most recently, he earned a GRAMMY® Award nod in the category of "Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album" for Standards in 2019.

Along the way, he has collaborated with everyone from Jeff Beck, Joni Mitchell, and Santana to P!nk, John Legend, and Gallant. However, Seal's voice resounds louder than ever with more music in 2022 and beyond.

All Seal Needs Is Love

Embarking on a tour celebrating his music career’s 30th anniversary, the singer and songwriter explained how tennis, Joni Mitchell and ChatGPT have inspired him.

  • Share full article

A pixelated image of Seal, smiling broadly.

By Jeremy Gordon

The singer and songwriter Seal is one of modern music’s most ardent believers in the power of love, but that doesn’t mean you should look to him for romantic advice. “You’re headed for disaster if you ask me,” he joked, before immediately providing what sounded like a practical perspective on how to make a relationship work. “I’ve found that it’s most productive when both parties see themselves, and then there’s this third entity which is like a plant. That plant needs water every day, and you love that plant because you — both as an entity, and as individuals — are all that it has.”

This type of focused dedication was on Seal’s mind as he prepared for a tour celebrating 30 years of his music career, an anniversary that prompted some reflection. “I can’t believe how fortunate I am to still be here,” he said in a video interview from his home studio in Los Angeles. “Every day above ground is a great day, as far as being a musician is concerned.”

He emphasized his good fortune, like when the film director Joel Schumacher gave new life to “Kiss From a Rose,” which hadn’t made any commercial impact with its 1994 arrival, by incorporating it into the 1995 film “Batman Forever.” Upon rerelease, the song hit No. 1 on the Billboard chart and won Grammys for record and song of the year. “It was exactly the same song that failed the first time. That’s a big, lucky break.”

But Seal, 60, isn’t fixated on the past. He cited Travis Scott’s 2020 performance inside the video game Fortnite as a potential model for how artists may reach fans in the future, remarking that “it won’t be long before we’re at a YouTube concert, virtually rubbing shoulders.” Still, he’s excited to see real-life fans on his tour this spring, which starts in late April. “Any time I get to play live for people, it’s like going on a date for the first time,” he said. “There are no bad audiences — only mediocre performances.”

As he prepared to hit the road, Seal spoke about 10 of his beloved cultural inspirations. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

It’s always on my mind. If you’ve listened to my music, I’ve been singing about that out of the gate. Every situation is almost certainly different when you choose to lean in with love; it doesn’t really matter what it is. Of course, love requires a degree of vulnerability. The ultimate kind of love — what we’re trying to achieve — is unconditional. I think that’s its purest form, and I also think that’s the reason for our existence. This is all an experiment; the point of it is happiness. Without unconditional love, I don’t know if it’s possible to achieve that — certainly not on this earth.

I love tennis because it’s an allegory for life. I love the discipline; I love the work; I love the problem solving; I love how, in the most incredible way, it relates to singing. In order to play tennis well, you have to go against everything your body wants; you have to relax, you have to almost relinquish control. I know that’s contrary to popular belief, but that’s singing: You let yourself, rather than make yourself.

Leica M Camera

I saw this director, Mike Figgis, at a candlelit dinner; he was taking pictures, and I was intrigued how he wasn’t using a flash. The next day, I went into a store and bought the exact same setup. That’s where the love affair began. It’s the one camera that gets out of the way between the subject I’m trying to capture and myself. By virtue of its design, the person can still see your face when you’re taking the picture; you still have that engagement and connection, opposed to the viewfinder being in the middle.

Joni Mitchell

One of my great memories of Joni was performing “Both Sides Now” with her in the audience. It’s one of the highlights of my life, the ability to work with someone who had such an impact on your growing up. [Seal sang on Mitchell’s 1994 song “How Do You Stop.” ] It’s the stuff dreams are made of; I just remember pinching myself to make sure it was happening. She’s quite remarkable; she’s a great storyteller, and authentic to the core. To see her onstage singing , after everything she’s been through, was amazing.

Necklace From My Daughter Lou

She gave it to me on my birthday, and that’s everything. Anyone who has a son or a daughter, when they give something to you — whether it’s their love, or a valuable lesson or something like a necklace — it’s not so much what it is, but the spirit and the soul of the person behind it. They start out as kids, and they end up as these people with their own outlook and philosophies on life, so the gift is more about their thought process, and who they are behind it. It’s both beautiful and heartwarming — you realize they’re their own people with their own views on the world, and what’s important to them.

Carol Christian Poell

I don’t like to call him a designer, because he’s more than that — he’s an artist much in the same way that a musician or a painter is an artist. I’ve been wearing his clothes since he started, and I just love the way he sees things — his attention to detail in the silhouette and the shape. I can spot somebody wearing a Carol costume at 100 yards. He doesn’t do bad stuff; that’s why he’s my favorite.

It’s a large part of who I am — you can take the boy out of London, but you never take London out of the boy. I like walking around where I grew up, just triggering those memories, but I also love the West End — anywhere in London, to be honest. I love my city, warts and all. It takes about two weeks of that dreadful weather to bring me to my senses and remind me why I left, but I’m lucky enough that I’m able to go back fairly regularly.

To not be curious about it would be akin to being a Luddite, or an ostrich with your head stuck in the sand. It’s here , and it’s part of our evolution — for that reason, you can’t fight it, and you can’t really see it as this enemy that’s going to be the end of mankind. My experience with it is I started out by thinking it was a machine, but once I started to relate to it as though I were talking to a person, this incredible collaboration started — I would ask maybe one or two questions, and it would spark my imagination and ability to create. I think it’s incredible, and I think we’re at an amazing point in our evolution as a species.

Goodall Acoustic Guitar

Sometimes a melody I’m writing is in my head, but more often than not, it’s on a guitar. I think handmade instruments are just beautiful things; they’re transport mechanisms to convey this phenomenon known as music. I love acoustic guitars, and Goodalls are my favorite. It’s all subjective — Martins are great to record with, but I’m pretty heavy-handed and Martins typically don’t like when you bash them. Goodalls, you can play them loud but they’re great at lower volumes, and of course the craftsmanship is extraordinary.

Do I sit and meditate every day? Probably, but not in a way that you might imagine. If it’s not sitting down in a kumbaya position and breathing — which I rarely do — it is playing tennis, which is a form of meditation. Having a degree of focus whilst being in a state — it’s a form of meditation. The thing I enjoy most is the balance, and the slowing down of the mind. That’s really important.

Seal interview: “Wherever it is we go to in the ether, I’ll look back with zero regrets”

By John Earls | March 15, 2023

Seal

“S eal is a huge presence. The first time I met him, he had Cuban heel boots on, when he’s 6ft 5ins anyway.” So says Trevor Horn of his initial encounter with Sealhenry Samuel at the producer’s famed London recording studio, Sarm West.

That Seal sought to make himself even bigger than he was already is appropriate for a singer whose music has always been more grandiose and replete with memorable moments than such a classy vocalist needed to get by.

Where lesser talents seek to show off with vocal gymnastics, Seal knows that the song is the star.

Still, Seal’s longtime producer is right: Seal is a huge presence. Over Zoom from his home studio in L.A., the singer is relaxed for someone who rarely talks to the British press.

He’s unguarded, funny and likes a dramatic gesture into his laptop camera. He’s every bit as Seal as you’d hope, aware of his role in music.

“In people’s eyes, I’m a singer,” he notes reasonably. “Nobody wants to hear my political views. If people listen to Seal, it’s because they want relief. They don’t want me banging on about whatever.

“Therefore, my job is really simple: come up with good songs. Hopefully one or two great ones. It’s really that straightforward. It’s not like we’re performing open-heart surgery or saving lives.”

Seal has provided relief and a chance to shimmy ever since Killer with Adamski crashed to No.1 in 1990. An early example of a featured vocalist, the unknown Seal was an instant star.

As Trevor explains: “You can tell when the public is interested in someone. Buying a single, you’re just interested in the record itself. Buying an album? You have to be interested in the artist to buy their album, and I could tell the public were interested in Seal.”

For all his obvious charisma, Seal was 27 when Killer got the public’s attention. In pop years, the Londoner was middle-aged to be introduced to the nation. Frankly, Seal, what kept you?

“That’s what I used to think,” he laughs. “Finding your voice, that’s the path of every artist. Before Killer , I wrote a bunch of songs I thought were great. On reflection, they were shite.”

Like a musical Doctor Who, Seal had tried a bunch of incarnations – most notably funk band Push – before finding his first niche in rave.

“I thought it was clear where I was going,” he admits. “But, when people came to see me play, they said the same thing: ‘He’s got an interesting voice, but what is he? If he’s rock, how come he’s black? Why isn’t he doing R&B or reggae?’ They weren’t interested.

“I thought they were all deaf, and my attitude was: ‘What’s wrong with you?’ The industry just didn’t know how to market me. Then someone gave me a cassette, and one play of that made me go: ‘Ohhhh! Now I see why it’s not happening.’”

The friend’s cassette featured Joni Mitchell, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Crosby, Stills & Nash. “I didn’t write a lick of music for a year, so I could soak up everything by these incredible musicians,” Seal reflects.

“I eventually realised what all those great musicians had in common was that they played an instrument, and their instrument reflected their music as much as their voice. I thought: ‘I’ve got to get an instrument.’”

A friend showed Seal how to play the A and E chords on guitar. “The first song I wrote after that year away was Crazy ,” he states. “The whole song came in 20, maybe 25 minutes.

“Not only was Crazy different from anything I’d written before, it didn’t sound like anyone. I knew instantly: ‘I’ve got one!’ For the first time, I sounded like me .”

Such a Hollywood moment was an important step that began in 1974, when an 11-year-old Seal first sang in public, performing Johnny Nash’s classic I Can See Clearly Now on a PTA day at his comprehensive in Kilburn, north London.

“I was terrible academically,” recalls Seal. “Everyone thought I’d amount to nothing and end up in debt or in prison. Even my parents didn’t see me [as I am].”

The only person who glimpsed Seal’s potential was “the cool teacher”, Mr Wren. “He was everything to me,” smiles Seal. “He wore the cool clothes, he had long hair – he was a musician who’d got a real job. Everyone else thought I’d throw my life away, but Mr Wren told me to sing that day.

“Neither my parents nor anyone at school had heard me sing. The stage was the scariest place in the world, and I just wanted to die. And I had to sing a capella. I only sang because I wanted to be like Mr Wren, and because I loved I Can See Clearly Now .

“When I sang, it was like a scene from a movie. I closed my eyes and you could hear a pin drop. The stage turned into feeling like home and I’ve never forgotten that feeling.”

seal singer tours

If it took writing Crazy to get on the right path, the song quickly grabbed the attention of Trevor Horn’s wife, Jill Sinclair, who ran the business side of their record label, ZTT .

Horn reveals: “Jill was a big fan of Nat King Cole. She’d say she wanted to find a modern-day Nat and one day she told me she’d found him.

“Jill played me a demo of Crazy . Seal’s vocals had been put through phasers, so I couldn’t tell how good his voice was. But I liked the song, and the line: ‘We’re never going to survive, unless we get a little crazy,’ that was great.”

It should be noted that, when interviewed separately, Seal and Trevor are quicker to praise each other’s skills than take any credit themselves. They’re now friends more than singer/producer, each appreciating what the other does.

Trevor: “I used to bemoan how American producers generally had better singers to work with than English producers. Then I worked with Seal, and realised what it’s like to work with one of the best.

“You do whatever it takes to set the mood, then you keep out of his way and get a great vocal out of him. His voice is so good, I’d think: ‘I’ve got a lot to live up to, to get the backing right for him.”

Seal: “The art of making great records is so rare, and I never really understood what it was before working with Trevor. A great record has a beginning, middle and end: for both a song and an album.

“Trevor has an incredible ability to make great records. I hear collections of really good songs, but I don’t hear many great records now.”

Both men are perfectionists, with Horn famed for his lengthy recording sessions. He laughs when asked if there’s anything he’d change on Seal’s debut now, admitting: “I don’t think of ‘If only’ like that. It all seems equally incredibly important at the time when working on an album, when a lot of it isn’t half as important as you’d think.”

Seal’s idealistic streak is different, and means he’s often been unable to hear his old music without wincing: “I’m always critical of my own input, thinking I could have sung it better or written a better lyric.

“My heroes – Joni, Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye – made great records and were never concerned, I never quite achieved their excellence.

“But that’s not the point, the point is what I was reaching for. So I am always going to be critical. It’s never going to be good enough.”

Seal laughs, aware of how maddening his frustrations can be. “I don’t think it’s the right way to approach music. I’d prefer to be happy and satisfied. But then, I’d also like a 737 jet.”

Admitting that he was initially nervous about the stories of “Ooh, you’ll be in the studio forever ,” as he describes Trevor’s reputation, Seal moved into a flat owned by the producer and Jill opposite Sarm West to begin work on the album.

“I feel privileged to have come up at a time when there was money in the music industry,” admits Seal. “There was never a time, whether it was 2pm or 3am, when I couldn’t walk over to Sarm West with some harebrained vocal idea in my head and not be singing it within a maximum of 15 minutes.

“That was how Trevor ran the ship. It was always: ‘When I’ve got the vocal, I’ve got the record.’

“Trevor didn’t suffer fools gladly, and the engineers had it drummed into them: ‘The vocal is the one thing I can’t control, so do not mess around with it. I want a mic set up permanently, just in case.’ Trevor never put pressure on me, as he’d say: ‘I’m not worried about you. Once the track is right, I know you’ll sing it right.’”

seal singer tours

“Wendy had already played guitar on two songs,” Trevor recalls. “Lisa hadn’t been well for those songs and I’d never met her before. Then, when she arrived for Whirlpool , I set Lisa, Wendy and Seal up in a semi-circle and it was one of those great sessions.”

  • Read more: OMD interview: “It’s the best job in the world”

Even more fortuitously, for the complex rhythms of The Beginning Seal had asked Horn to track down a Detroit-based drum programmer who’d played with Inner City. “I was wondering how to find him,” says Trevor. “I went to the toilet in Sarm and passed a guy who was muttering at the Asteroids arcade machine.

“As it was my studio, I’d become pretty good at Asteroids , so I gave the guy a tip on how to get to the next level. We got chatting – and he was the programmer Seal had asked me to find. I told him: ‘There’s some work going in the studio downstairs if you fancy it.’ Just goes to show how random it can all be.”

By then, they’d become firm friends. “We both had the same sense of humour,” smiles Trevor. “We both liked old English comedians and were particularly fond of Frankie Howerd and Ken Dodd. You’ve got to get on with someone if you’re going to spend all those hours in the control room.”

Seal says of Trevor: “I still look at him as the older brother I never had, someone I can confide in. We have an unspoken communication after 30 years. We’ve seen each other at our highest and lowest.”

seal singer tours

The singer credits Horn with instilling a good work ethic, ensuring that his music is done properly. Not that this method was always easy to grasp. Seal imitates the producer’s gentle County Durham accent: “Trevor would say: ‘I don’t have the record yet.’

“We’d be 27 versions in on Crazy or Prayer For The Dying , when I’d thought they sounded great 20 versions ago. I’d think: ‘What are you waiting for?’ But the first time I heard Crazy on the radio, I thought: ‘Ah, now I get it’.

“Crazy jumped off the radio and it sounded like it immediately belonged on the airwaves. That was the first inkling I got of what Trevor means by ‘the record’.

“ Owner Of A Lonely Heart , the single made when Trevor was in Yes: if that comes on the radio, man, that’s a jewel in the crown. It doesn’t matter what song is on before or after, that song jumps off the radio and is right in your face. That’s great record-making.”

Seal cites his classic, Kiss From A Rose , as a textbook example of the pair’s attention to detail. Each of the hit’s many vocal harmonies has eight tracks, which Seal would record individually, six to nine takes for each track.

“The payoff would be when Trevor would pan those eight tracks from left to right in the studio,” beams Seal. “They’d sound beautiful . I worked with some American artists a couple of years ago, and they were shocked that that’s how I record backing vocals.

“Not just that I don’t use software, but the speed I can do it at. That’s what Trevor drummed into me. He taught me to think big and believe big – to be better.”

It’s an ethos Seal takes into writing songs, and helps explain why it’s been seven years since his last album of new material, 7 . “I’ve never been one for releasing music for the sake of it,” he shrugs. “I don’t need to stay current or stay in the public consciousness.

“I make music when I have something to say. If I don’t, I’ll do something else I’m passionate about. I’ll go play tennis. “Thankfully, I have a body of work that’s representative of things I feel strongly about, that needed to be said.”

Seal might not need to stay in the spotlight, but he accepts he doesn’t return home to the UK enough. His last shows here were in 2018.

“I’m really touched you refer to England as ‘home’,” he says, with a smile that seems to be 6ft 5ins in its own right. “I very much regard England as my home. When I come back to England, it’s the one place I know where I am.

“Not geographically, but where I am in life. If I’m talking to a cab driver, I know where I am with that banter. The missus and I have been talking a lot about spending more time coming back closer to… if not England, at least Europe.”

Seal’s daughter Lou is 13, while sons Henry and Johan are 17 and 16. “The kids are grown up now,” he says of his children with ex-wife Heidi Klum.

  • Read more: The story of 1983 in music

“My stepdaughter…” He quickly corrects himself on how he refers to his new wife’s daughter. “Our daughter Imogen goes to a French school, which has annexes all over the world. Moving back wouldn’t be that difficult a transition.

“The older I get, the more I think about coming back. That affects the music I make, as it affects who you come into contact with. And I will be touring England in the very near future.”

Not only does England still feel like home, so does the stage. “The stage doesn’t feel like my only home,” he points out. “Home is where the heart is, and my heart is with my family: my beautiful spouse, my dogs.

“There’s a feeling of happiness and contentment. The stage does still feel like home, but only because right here, where I’m talking to you now, feels like home.”

Of course, that contentment doesn’t quite spread to being wholly at peace with his back catalogue. While Seal has just been reissued as a 4CD and 2LP boxset featuring remixes, rarities and a compelling live show from Dublin, the singer is unfussed about the prospect of additional future reissues… bar one.

“I’d like to remaster Human Being ,” he frets, referring to 1998’s unfairly neglected third album, which disjointed Seal’s career when it only reached No.44 in the UK.

It’s an overlooked Balearic gem in both Seal and Trevor’s careers. “It got compressed twice: heavily in the experimental mix, and heavily again in the cut,” ponders Seal of the album’s sound. “But it’s a record that I’m very proud of.

“During the course of your career, you’ve got to make an album like Human Being : completely uncompromised, made for you and you alone. It was a difficult record to make, but probably my favourite time on reflection. So, that’s one I’d like to have remastered. The others? Nah.”

  • Read more: Goldfrapp interview: “I think most bands are too scared to try something different…”

Horn names 2003’s subsequent IV as his favourite Seal album – “It makes me remember happy personal things and is one I had in the car for a while,” he notes – but is slightly wary of producing another with his friend.

Although Trevor’s planning to play bass in Seal’s band on a US tour of the first two albums in full, the prospect of producing a new LP is slightly daunting at 73: “I’d make another album with Seal if it was the right record and the right moment. But I’m getting on a bit, and the hours I put in when producing? I’m not sure I want to do that now.”

Trevor is similarly pragmatic about why he’s produced five of Seal’s albums, smiling: “Hugh Grant was once asked if he gets the pick of any film role he wants. His reply was: ‘It’s surprising how hard it is to find roles for what I do, especially as you get older.’

“What you do works with some people – and it just works for Seal and me. I like Seal’s voice so much, I can defer to it. We’ll change tracks around, but I know he’ll always sound great. Finding people you work with can be hard, so why not keep going with Seal?”

If Trevor isn’t ready to commit to a full album, Seal would need to find another producer to fit with. He’s starting to assemble the songs, at least.

At the start of our interview, Seal excitedly plays the demo of a new track, A Little Lie , that he has written with Chris Bruce, co-writer of State Of Grace from Human Being .

Even over our respective laptop screens, A Little Lie sounds a mighty catchy beast, unusually guitar-heavy. “This is going to be good when it’s finished,” enthuses Seal. “It’s probably an opener.”

With new songs and new love, Seal seems in a good place . He agrees. “Considering how difficult it was in the early part of my life, I’ve done well,” he muses. “Wherever it is we go to in the ether, I’ll look back with zero regrets.

“I’m not just talking career-wise, but everything: kids, divorce, loves lost and found, how active I am physically and emotionally – all of that.

“At 59, I find myself in a position where, if I got hit by a bus tomorrow, I’d think: ‘You could probably have done one or two things better. But bloody hell, what a run!’”

It feels like Seal still has plenty to say. And if not, he plays a mean game of tennis.

San Diego band Electric Mud will open Rolling Stones’ May 7 Arizona concert

Three of the award-winning band’s four members are U.S. Navy veterans and nephews of Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards and his wife, Patti Hansen. ‘It will be the most awesome show we’ve ever done,’ says Electric Mud co-founder Marc Hansen.

It’s a dream never fully dreamed come true for Electric Mud. The award-winning San Diego rock band, led by former U.S. Navy SEAL Marc Hansen, will perform as the opening act for the Rolling Stones’ May 7 Arizona concert at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, a suburb of Phoenix.

June 12, 2020

The announcement was made Thursday morning in a press release issued by the legendary English band’s New York representatives.

The concert at the 63,400-capacity Arizona stadium is one of 16 dates on the Stones’ 2024 North American Hackney Diamonds stadium tour. It opened Wednesday in Houston, concludes July 25 in Santa Clara, just outside San Francisco, and includes July 10 and 13 performances at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

“The biggest show we’ve ever done up until now was at San Diego’s House of Blues club,” Hansen told the Union-Tribune late last week. “This Arizona concert with the Stones came out of the blue.”

Out of the blue, perhaps. But not without some lobbying — and a fortuitous family connection — on the part of Electric Mud.

Three of the band’s four members — brothers Marc and Matty Hansen, and their cousin, bassist Matt Sorena — are the nephews of Patti Hansen and her husband, Rolling Stones guitarist and vocalist Keith Richards.

Marc Hansen credits Keith Richards for giving him his first guitar and first guitar lesson as a teenager, and for encouraging Electric Mud early on. The band was formed in Staten Island, N.Y. in 2008, then relocated to San Diego, after guitarist/singer Marc and his drummer brother Matty enlisted in the U.S. Navy and relocated to San Diego.

“I had sent our Aunt Patti an Electric Mud promotional package to give to the promoters of the Stones’ tour two years ago,” Hansen, 37, recalled.

“We hadn’t heard anything since then, so we all thought it was a shot in the dark. Then, just a few weeks ago, the promoters asked my aunt: ‘Hey, where are your nephews? We want them to open for the Stones.’ Then, they contacted us. They said Mick (Jagger) had a big hand in picking us — as he does with all the bands that open for the Stones — and told the promoters to give us a shot.”

The Hansen brothers and Sorena each released solo albums last year. But Electric Mud, whose fourth member is guitarist Colton Cori, has been largely inactive as a band since the COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020.

Opening a stadium gig for the Stones is a singular reason to kick back into gear — and a potentially nerve-wracking one — since the opening acts at other dates on the Hackney Diamonds tour includes such established artists as Gary Clark, Jr., Widespread Panic, Tyler Childers and Lainey Wilson.

“I’d say we’re a lot more excited than nervous,” said Hansen, whose day job is as a civilian trainer for U.S. Navy SEALs. “We’ve never done anything this big, so there are a lot of extra details that go with it. I mean, we don’t even have a soundman!”

To get ready for their very big show in Arizona, Electric Mud will do some recordings sessions here this weekend. The band will then rehearse all of next week at a studio near the Pechanga Arena San Diego, a venue the Stones have performed in a number of times over the past half-century. Electric Mud’s goal is to hone a dozen or so of the band’s songs, then select the best six for their 30-minute opening set at State Farm Stadium.

If all goes according to plan, Electric Mud will do a free warm-up concert here in San Diego on May 5. (Updates will be posted on the band’s website at electricmudofficial.com/band .) Then, comes the May 6 drive with all their equipment to Arizona, and the big night on May 7.

“It will be the most awesome show we’ve ever done,” Hansen said. “And even if we never do anything else, we’ll have opened for the Stones, our favorite band and the greatest rock and roll band in the world. We will get on that stage and do the very best we can do. What really matters is that we crush that show.”

Seal entered the game when Beets, Miss Cleocatra and Gumball returned to the stage during the April 24 episode of the Fox singing competition

Warning: This article contains spoilers from the latest episode of  The Masked Singer .

Group B brought the girl power to Girl Group Night on The Masked Singer on Wednesday, April 24.

Judges Ken Jeong , Jenny McCarthy ,  Rita Ora  and  Robin Thicke paid homage to the Spice Girls by opening the show with “Wannabe” before turning things over to Miss Cleocatra.

“I had my own gang of great women that shaped me, starting with my own mother,” Miss Cleocatra said in her clue package. “She was a maid so I didn’t have to be.”

The video also showed a domino with five pips, Whoopi Goldberg , Bette Midler and Michelle Obama . “I’m most proud of the little princesses who see me as their queen,” Miss Cleocatra added.

The regal cat tackled “Free Your Mind” by En Vogue .

Carnie Wilson , who competed with her Wilson Phillips bandmates as Lambs on season 8 , sang an additional clue for Miss Cleocatra: “Stop! In the Name of Love” by The Supremes .

“The Supremes aren’t just on my playlist, they’re a part of my career,” Miss Cleocatra explained.

The panel thought Miss Cleocatra might be Loretta Devine , Roberta Flack or Jenifer Lewis .

Beets vegetated to the stage next.

“We both bring our own spice,” one of the Beets said in their clue package that featured a boarding pass, a restaurant menu and a bread castle.

Beets explained that one “was a total ladies’ man” while the other “was the tough guy,” but they “didn’t try to outdo each other.” “Instead, like a good girl group, we teamed up,” one of the Beets added.

Additionally, Beets mentioned that they still tour together.

The veggies then belted “I’m So Excited” by The Pointer Sisters .

“I’m your biggest fan,” Ora, 33, declared.

Raven-Symoné , season 2’s Black Widow , returned to the show to provide an extra-musical clue for Beets, singing “Weak” by SWV.

“We made our audience weak in the knees on Broadway,” Beets revealed.

The judges suggested Beets might be country duo Brooks & Dunn , Broadway actors Tituss Burgess and Alan Cumming or Scrubs stars Zach Braff and Donald Faison .

Gumball followed up with a touching tale about looking on the bright side.

“There’s actually one girl who’s been singing lead in my life for years: my wife,” Gumball said in his clue package. “I still remember the night I met her, an angel from across the room. I knew right then and there I’d spend the rest of my life with her.”

Gumball shared that his wife was diagnosed with “a disease that will impact her later in life,” but they chose to “be present each and every moment, say ‘yes’ more and explore more of the wide open spaces out there.”

The package displayed a globe, bowling, a moon and angel wings and a halo.

Gumball covered one of his wife’s favorite songs, “Wide Open Spaces” by The Chicks . Then Wilson, 55, delivered Gumball’s additional musical clue, belting Pussycat Dolls ’ “Don’t Cha.”

“Well, don’t you wish you could’ve starred with Channing Tatum like me?” Gumball asked.

Derek Hough , Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Taran Killam arose as possibilities for Gumball.

A wildcard contestant rounded out the night when Seal took the stage. Seal described themselves as “cute, cuddly and friendly” in their clue package, which featured a driver's license, a chemistry set and a treasure chest.

“I was in one of the most famous groups in the world,” Seal teased.

Seal put the spin on Wilson Phillips’ hit “Hold On.”

“Definitely one of the most charming characters we’ve ever had,” Thicke, 47, declared.

Raven-Symoné, 38, returned to sing “Boss” by Fifth Harmony for Seal’s additional clue. “It’s easy to be confident when you have a boss like Steven Spielberg ,” Seal said.

Sean Astin , Corey Feldman , Haley Joel Osment and Ora’s husband Taika Waititi came up as options for Seal.

Host  Nick Cannon  announced that, following the vote, Miss Cleocatra and Seal would be going to the Smackdown to fight to stay in the competition. Miss Cleocatra and Seal each offered up a rendition of “Waterfalls” by TLC, with Miss Cleocatra putting a jazzy spin on it and Seal going the more traditional route.

The judges ultimately decided to keep Seal around and send home Miss Cleocatra. When Miss Cleocatra unmasked, she turned out to be Jeong’s guess of Black-ish star Lewis, 67.

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 11, Episode 8 of “ The Masked Singer ,” “Girl Group Night,” which aired April 24 on Fox.

Jenifer Lewis spent a year recovering from a devastating 10-foot fall while on safari in Tanzania. It was while she was still in bed, convalescing, that she got a call from “The Masked Singer.” “I still couldn’t walk,” she told Variety . “And my friends encouraged me to get out of bed and go do what I love to do. ‘You’ll be in front of a live audience, you’ll be singing, you’ll be in a mask, but you’ll still be doing what you really love to do, which is to entertain.'”

Popular on Variety

Lewis said the show accommodated her limitations on stage. “They bolted me to the floor in a harness when I sang ‘Stormy Weather,’ and when I sang the En Vogue song, the mic was bolted. You’ll see, I never let go of it because I couldn’t walk. But it did lift my spirit to get up and do ‘The Masked Singer.’ It was the best decision I made.”

Lewis came up with the idea of being a Cleopatra-like character, “because I knew they could carry me out on the stage. They could sit me on the throne, and the muscle men could escort me around.”

But, because she was still in a bit of pain, “I was still on a little morphine. So if you look closely, when I’m on that throne, you’ll see a little nodding off up there,” Lewis said. “I was so stoned walking around!”

Lewis said she has improved greatly in recent months. “I’m doing great,” she said. “People ask me, ‘On a scale of one to 10, how are you doing?’ I’m a nine and a half. I want to tell the kids when you fall, however you fall, get up. Get up. That’s all we got.”

For Miss Cleocatra, Ken Jeong got it right with Jenifer Lewis. Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg named Loretta Devine. Rita Ora guessed Roberta Flack. Robin Thicke went with Loretta Devine as well.

It  was “Girl Groups Night,” and the panel opened by singing “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls.

Jenifer Lewis as Miss Cleocatra joins Kate Flannery (Starfish), Charlie Wilson (Ugly Sweater), DeMarcus Ware (Koala), Colton Underwood (Love Bird), Sisqó (Lizard), Billy Bush (Sir Lion), Joe Bastianich (Spaghetti & Meatballs), Savannah Chrisley (Afghan Hound) and Kevin Hart (Book) as the celebrities unmasked on “The Masked Singer” this season.

Back for Season 11 are host Nick Cannon, alongside panelists Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke, while Rita Ora has joined the desk to fill in for Nicole Scherzinger, who was in London to star on the West End’s “Sunset Boulevard.”

“The Masked Singer” Season 11 features themed episodes including “The Wizard of Oz,” in celebration of the 85th anniversary of the classic film; “Transformers” (marking the brand’s 40th anniversary) and music tributes including “Billy Joel Night” and “Queen Night.” Additional themes include “Girl Groups,” “Soundtrack of My Life,” “TV Theme Night” and “Shower Anthems.”

With sixteen total celebrity singers, including three “wildcards,” Season 11 features new costumes including “Gumball,” “Lizard,” “Ugly Sweater,” “Goldfish,” “Starfish,” “Book,” “Gumball,” “Miss Cleocatra,” “Afghan Hound,” “Beets,” “Poodle Moth,” “Clock,” “Spaghetti & Meatballs,” “Lizard,” “Koala,” “Seal” and “Sir Lion.” According to the show, the Season 11 contestants boast a combined 22 Grammy nominations, 11 platinum albums, 33 Teen Choice nominations, 108 million records sold, 326 film appearances and 1.7 billion Spotify streams.

Next week, we’ll find out which Group B winner faces off against Group A winner Goldfish and Group C’s Poodle Moth and Clock for the quarter finals.

I was the total ladies man. [And I was the tough guy.] Two guys who couldn’t be any more different. But we didn’t try to outdo each other. Instead, like a good girl group, we teamed up. [It was our organic friendship that made us a delicious duo and kept us on the menus nationwide.] Yeah, we’re still touring, hitting the town. [We’d be so excited to make it to the Group B finale. Now, all the brightest starst look to me, including Michelle Obama and her mother. I’m most proud of the little princesses who see me as their queen. Caution: Spoilers ahead!

The Masked Singer  season 11 returned on Wednesday for a fun, high-energy night of powerful performances as four costumed contestants duked it out for Girl Group Night!

This week's slate of singers gave it their best shot to secure their spot in the ongoing race for the Golden Mask Trophy, while a new Wild Card contestant shook up the competition.

The show's  panel of celebrity "detectives"  -- including  Robin Thicke ,  Ken Jeong ,  Jenny McCarthy  and newcomer  Rita Ora  -- did their best to deduce the secret identities of the costumed contestants with some help from  host Nick Cannon .

The Beets, Miss Cleocatra, The Gumball and The Seal hit the stage to belt out hits from the biggest girl groups in music history in an effort to win the audience's votes and move on to the Group B Finals.

Miss Cleocatra was the first contestant to hit the stage, bringing her diva-esque charisma and gravitas to the stage for her performance of En Vogue's "Free Your Mind." The number showed a different, funkier side to the songstress' range and left the judges impressed.

Thicke and McCarthy praised Miss Cleocatra's dance moves, as Ora exclaimed, "I was just looking at the kick! I was like, 'OK! You did not come to play.' The claws came out."

The singing duo The Beets were the next to come out and show off their vocal chops. The stylish root vegetables proved they've got some real talent with a cover of "I'm So Excited" by The Pointer Sisters.

"I did not expect that!" Ora gushed. "I'm your biggest fan. I love you more and more every time I see you. You're so jolly, so cute, and I just wanna hang out with you guys. What an amazing performance!"

For the third act of the night. The Gumball came out and sweetened things up with a colorful and poignant deliver of The Chicks' "Wide Open Spaces" that got the audience swaying and singing along -- and left Jeong wiping tears from his eyes.

"I know that you're married to your beautiful wife, and she must be so proud to hear you sing that song," McCarthy said. "It's one of her favorite songs, you said, and you won our hearts tonight as well. What an amazing, beautiful performance tonight."

"Great job," Thicke added, applauding the singer's remarkable number.

The final performance of the night came from the newly introduced Wild Card contestant -- The Seal!

The Seal came out to a great deal of fanfare and his adorable look won over the panelists even before he began belting out Wilson Phillips' "Hold On."

"What a wild card!" Ora marveled. "The cutest thing I've ever seen!"

"He's definitely one of the most charming characters we've ever had," Thicke added.

After all the songs were sung, it was time for the audience to vote for their favorite performer of the night, sending the two singers with the lowest scores to a Battle Royale showdown.

Once all the votes were cast, Cannon revealed that The Gumball and The Beets would be moving on to the Group B finals! However, Miss Cleocatra and The Seal were sent to face off one last time for a final chance to keep their Masked Singer dreams alive.

For their Battle Royale, both singers delivered very different reimagined versions of TLC's "Waterfalls" that showed off different aspects of their range and talent. However, The Seal's adorableness seemed to give him the edge, and it was Miss Cleocatra who got the axe.

After the judges made their finals guesses (with Jeong actually nailing his guess), Miss Cleocatra unmasked and revealed herself to be legendary actress, singer a Black-ish star Jenifer Lewis .

When asked why she wanted to be a part of The Masked Singer , Lewis explained, "I took a long break. And when they called, I said, 'You know, I haven't been on stage singing for a long time.' So I said, 'Come on, let's go!'"

"And it was fun!" she added with a warm laugh. "I had a blast."

The Masked Singer  airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.

Check out the gallery below for a look at  every single contestant who has ever had to "take it off"  throughout the history of the show.

Although the pair have been together less than a year, engagement rumors are already swirling . However, a bizarre conspiracy theory about the couple has also taken off online.

In a post to Instagram on April 12, @ifintersectionalfeminism wrote: "A televangelist from Arkansas claims Satan is engineering Taylor Swift's marriage to Travis Kelce so she can give birth to the antichrist and launch the apocalyptic thousand-year war against Christ.

"Must she do everything? And during a world tour?" the poster added. The claim has been making the rounds online for months, although the rumor is unverified and the reported televangelist is not named.

However, Travis's father, Ed Kelce, appears to find the claim hilarious. In a comment on @ifintersectionalfeminism's post on Thursday, the former sales executive wrote: "That's my boy!"

Sports fans were in hysterics, with Lisa Burt writing: "You're the best. Be my dad."

"Love it," agreed @nature.luuver.

"Papa Kelce... The GOAT [greatest of all time]," posted @moonlight.fascinations.

Newsweek has reached out to Ed Kelce for comment via Instagram.

Although this conspiracy theory is unsubstantiated, similar claims were made about the pop star and Kelce in November.

Self-declared "MAGA Prophet" Hank Kunneman, who runs the Lord of Hosts Church in Nebraska, accused Swift of performing "satanic rituals and witchcraft" during concerts.

The 57-year-old also questioned the 34-year-old Grammy winner's relationship with Kelce, dubbing the Chiefs' tight end "Mr Pfizer " over his advertising campaign with the pharmaceutical brand.

The 34-year-old starred in a commercial in September to encourage people to get their flu shot at the same time as their COVID-19 booster jab. It caused uproar among conservatives such as Outkick host Tomi Lahren and New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers .

This isn't the first time Ed Kelce has grabbed attention with his social-media activity. The father-of-two trolled his son Jason Kelce on Instagram, following the former Philadelphia Eagles center's antics at the Chiefs vs. Buffalo Bills game in January.

After the Chiefs scored a touchdown, Jason ripped off his shirt and jumped into the crowd to high-five fans, with a screenshot of the moment taking over the internet.

Ed shared a meme of Jason, where the 36-year-old had been photoshopped into the famous battle scene from Mel Gibson's 1995 historical epic Braveheart .

"Jason fighting for Scotland's freedom," he captioned the post, much to football fans delight.

"Classic!!" commented one user, while another posted: "Big Ed wins the internet today!"

Ed Kelce seems to have given Swift his seal of approval, with the "Antihero" singer appearing to call him "Dad" in a video filmed following the Chiefs vs. the Baltimore Ravens game in January.
