Recent tour reviews

Seeing St. Vincent play live is like a big surreal dream. She played everything off MASSEDUCTION and favorites from Strange Mercy, Marry Me, and Actor. The set changes and accompanying art videos were absolutely stunning. Sitting on the balcony of the venue while listening to her sing while these neon colored videos playing made me feel like I was in a giant Surrealism Salon. What a talented, innovate performer and a genuine person.

Oh, and her aunt and uncle Tuck and Patti were her opening acts. So adorable hear them call her little Annie, not to mention that they fucking RIPPED. Patti has a voice of gold and Tuck is such a fantastic guitar player. What a giant treat. Everyone took me to church!!!

The show opens with a short film. Not unusual but not anticipated.

Then a 10-15 intermission.

Then the show begins.

Annie stage right and moves to different mics upon the stage between each song. For every song and every move, STV is being delivered different MusicMan STV signature guitars to what look like militarized ninjas.

There was a blue dominatrix at one point that did something on stage. Not too sure why they were a part of the show as they were only on stage for 40 seconds.

Overall the show could be categorized into the following.

Too much...

Not enough...

and never connecting with the audience.

Exhausting watching Annie Clark play St Vincent Karaoke.

Excellent execution of the songs but the schtick is wearing thin.

The show started off with a disturbing video about a dead dad who ends up in a panda suit at his daughter's birthday party. The video was created by St. Vincent, and it wasn't good. The actual show featured mostly recorded music with St. Vincent standing still on stage wearing a sexploitation outfit of a pink vinyl leotard and thigh-high high-heeled go-go boots. Every song, the curtain would move a few feet and she's shift to a different locale, where she'd again stand still, strumming her guitar and singing to recorded music, looking like a pink dominatrix mannequin. There was no band - ever. It. Was. Dull. She seemed to be trying hard to be stylishly edgy, but failed.

Show was in acts, like a play. The 2nd act featured dramatic pose, sometimes laying down in front of an abstract vampire mural. She seemed to have a guitar fetish - sometimes changing guitars out twice per song.

In act 3, she stood in front of a screen on a circle pedestal while weird sexually-charged videos played behind her, sometimes featuring loops of expressionless images of St. Vincent in those videos. She was expressionless in all images - she looked dead inside.

This show was an extreme disappointment after the last tour - that show was one of my favorites of the year.

NME  spoke to St. Vincent about her upcoming record last month, where she spoke to us about collaborating with Dave Grohl on lead single ‘Broken Man’. “From the beginning of the song, it’s a slow-burn,” she said.

“The shape of the song is climbing the mountain, because it just grows and grows. There are essentially three drummers on the track: the first part is my programming, the second part Mark Guiliana comes in, and then at the very end of the track – just when you think it can’t get any higher – Grohl comes in with this absolute reckless spirit and just takes it to the edge.”

We also caught up with her at the BRITs earlier this month, where she spoke of her love for The Last Dinner Party : “I came across them the same way everybody did, by checking out their debut album [‘Prelude To Ecstasy’],” she said, recalling how she first came across the British band.

“I love it, it’s adventurous, it’s romantic and dramatic… they’re doing great.”

St. Vincent new music

Thus far, St. Vincent has dropped two singles ahead of the release of “All Born Screaming.”

First up, she put out the hypnotic “Broken Man,” which pits industrial instrumentals against Clark’s signature raw vocals. The song’s steady build leads to an eruption that will surely be a highlight at upcoming live shows.

Then, she unveiled “Flea” in tandem with the tour announcement. This second track is pure unbridled rock and roll complete with sultry call-and-response vocals.

If you want to catch up with Clark’s music ahead of “All Born Screaming” hitting shelves, you can find the pair of tracks here .

St. Vincent special guests

Every show on the run will feature an impressive opening act kicking off the evening festivities.

As a quick reintroduction, here’s each artist’s most-streamed track on Spotify:

Spoon: “Inside Out”

Yves Tumor: “Limerence”

Momma: “Biohazard”

Eartheater: “Supersoaker”

Dorian Electra: “M’lady”

“Flea” is St. Vincent’s latest offering from  All Born Screaming . The song features Dave Grohl on drums and Justin Meldal-Johnson on bass, and builds to a fuzzy, anthemic refrain. “Flea” then cracks open into a spacious bridge with some expressive guitar work from St. Vincent, all before returning to the song’s head-banging chorus.

“Flea” follows February’s “Broken Man,” the first single off of  All Born Screaming . St. Vincent recruited collaborators such as Grohl, Cate Le Bon, Josh Freese, Rachel Eckroth, Mark Guiliana, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Stella Mogzawa, and David Ralicke to contribute to  All Born Screaming . The album, which follows 2021’s Daddy’s Home , is described by St. Vincent as having a more “urgent and chaotic” sound.

All Born Screaming  is out everywhere on April 26th.

As TikTok ban heads to court, ByteDance's Lemon8 surges

As TikTok heads to court on Monday to argue against a U.S. ban, parent company ByteDance's newer social app, Lemon8, is once again surging to the top of the App Store in the U.S. The push is due, in part, to increased advertising. Described by TikTok influencers as a cross between Pinterest and Instagram -- or more recently, as "Pinterest on steroids" -- the app had previously appeared in the App Store's top charts when a TikTok ban was being discussed by U.S. lawmakers. Seemingly poised to serve as a backup plan if TikTok were to be removed from the U.S. market -- or divested from its Chinese parent company -- Lemon8 offers TikTok creators a new platform they could port their followers to in the event of a ban.

St.-Vincent---Zackery-Michael

Hot on the heels of her critically acclaimed new album, Daddy’s Home , St. Vincent has announced a run of North American tour dates this coming September and October. Vincent, whose real name is Annie Clark, will bring her new music across the country starting in Portland, Maine, before rounding out the dates in Detroit, Michigan.

St. Vincent and her band will be hitting iconic venues across the country, including The Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California, and The Hollywood Bowl in LA. Tickets for her new US tour will go on sale on June 3 at 10am local time, though the Hollywood Bowl gig will go on sale on June 1 at 10am PT. St. Vincent will also headline Pitchfork Music Festival 2021 in September, topping the bill alongside Phoebe Bridgers and Erykah Badu.

Outside of her musical endeavors, Clark has stayed busy getting ready to release The Nowhere Inn , a film she stars in alongside Carrie Brownstein. The film is stylized as a behind-the-scenes concert documentary directed by Brownstein and centered on Clark. The Nowhere Inn takes the depiction of a touring musician to daring extremes, with the filmmaker and the artist’s working relationship slowly unraveling over the course of the shoot. The Nowhere Inn premiered back at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, and will open in theaters and on streaming on September 17th.
