Most Americans have traveled abroad, although differences among demographic groups are large

Travelers arrive at Miami International Airport ahead of Memorial Day weekend on May 26, 2021.

Americans are gradually returning to international travel, though international travel restrictions remain in place in many countries.

In March 2021 – the most recent month for which data is available – around 3 million American citizens traveled outside of the country. This is shy of the nearly 4 million U.S. citizens who traveled abroad in March 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic unfolded and far below the roughly 8 million who did so in March 2019, according to U.S. Department of Commerce data . But it represents a significant uptick over the low point in the late spring of 2020, when only around 1 million Americans or fewer left the United States. Still, international travel by Americans remains far below pre-pandemic levels.

A line graph showing that in April and May of 2020, fewer than 1 million Americans traveled internationally

To provide context for the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on international travel, this post looks at the habits of Americans when it comes to who most frequently goes abroad, as well as those groups in the U.S. who have been less likely to do so. To do this, we analyzed I-92 data from the International Air Travel Statistics Program at the U.S. Department of Commerce. This data includes all flights in and out of the U.S. and reports the total volume of air traffic as well as the number of U.S. citizens traveling.

The post also uses findings from a Pew Research Center survey conducted June 14-27, 2021. The survey sampled 10,606 adults who are part of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology .

Here are the questions used for the report, along with responses, and its methodology .

A chart showing that most Americans have been out of the country at least once

Whether before or during the pandemic, international travel is something a 71% majority of U.S. adults have done at some point in their lives, according to a June Pew Research Center survey. By contrast, around a quarter (27%) have not traveled abroad.

Still, the degree to which Americans have traveled around the globe varies widely: 19% have been to only one foreign country, 12% to two countries, 15% to three or four countries, and 14% to five to nine countries. Only 11% of Americans have been to 10 or more countries.

Who travels – and how much – also differs substantially across demographic groups. Income plays a decided role: Almost half (48%) of those earning less than $30,000 a year have not left the country, compared with 28% of those who earn between $30,000 and $79,999 a year and 10% of those earning $80,000 or more. These highest earners are also significantly more likely to have visited multiple countries.

A bar chart showing that college graduates are more likely to visit multiple countries

Americans with lower levels of education are much less likely to have traveled widely than those with more schooling. For example, 37% of those with just some college education or less have not left the country, compared with only 7% of those who have graduated college. College graduates are also more likely to have been to multiple countries: A quarter have been to 10 or more countries.

Women (32%) are more likely than men (22%) to have never traveled outside the country. Men, for their part, are much more likely than women to have been to five or more countries (30% vs. 22%). Still, men and women are equally likely to have been to only one country.

Black Americans are much less likely to have ever traveled abroad (49%) than White (75%) or Hispanic Americans (73%). White adults are also more likely to have been to five or more countries (30%) than Black (13%) or Hispanic (15%) adults.

When it comes to party affiliation, there are no significant differences in the share of Republicans and Democrats who have traveled internationally or in the number of countries they have visited.

A bar chart showing that Americans with interest in foreign affairs are more likely to have traveled to multiple countries

The 64% of Americans who say they are at least somewhat interested in keeping up to date on foreign affairs or foreign policy are much more likely to have traveled abroad at some point in their lives than those who say they have limited or no interest. They are also more likely to have been to many countries. For example, 32% of those who are interested in foreign affairs or foreign policy have been to at least five foreign countries, compared with 14% who are less focused on keeping up to date on foreign affairs.

American Airlines Cuts Travel Agencies Slack: Extends Deadline For Loyalty Points

Dennis Schaal , Skift

April 23rd, 2024 at 4:52 PM EDT

Who's in and who's out of American Airlines' new preferred agency program to date? The deadline extension seems to indicate their are some hiccups along the way.

Dennis Schaal

American Airlines was poised to stop enabling customers of certain travel agencies to earn loyalty points on the airline’s bookings starting May 1, but said Tuesday it is extending that deadline until July 11.

The issue relates to American’s preferred agency program , and the requirement that a minimum of 30% of a travel agency’s bookings come from American’s New Distribution Capability fares.

These fares largely bypass global distribution systems, and is a cheaper and more efficient way for the airline to make its content available to travel agencies.

Many Travel Agencies Have Qualified

The airline said a large number of agencies have already qualified. So if you are a customer of that travel agency and you book an American Airlines flight, you would still be able to earn AAdvantage points. If your travel agency doesn’t make the list, then you’d have to book the flight directly on AA.com or use a one of the preferred agencies to earn the airline’s loyalty points.

“The majority of our indirect bookings are now made via an agency with NDC capabilities, and the current list of agencies beyond 30% NDC bookings is already impressive,” said an American Airlines spokesperson in a statement. “We anticipate even more who are on the cusp of meeting the threshold to do so very soon, which will provide customers with excellent preferred agency options to go along with our offerings on aa.com. As such, we’ve decided to extend the update to the way customers earn AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points on flights to July 11.”

The airline declined to specify which travel agencies have already qualified to be preferred agencies.

An Expedia Group spokesperson, however said: “We have an agreement with AA and have absolutely no reason to think we won’t be preferred.”

In a statement Wednesday, American Society of Travel Advisors President and CEO Zane Kerby welcomed the delay, but took some shots at American Airlines.

“While the fundamentals of American’s preferred travel agency program appear not to have changed, its postponement of the program is welcome news for the travel industry,” Kerby said. “Agencies and advisors most affected by this oncoming change have a couple more months to prepare. It seems that American may now admit to what we’ve expressed for months: its NDC technology was underdeveloped, and its implementation deadlines were both arbitrary and unrealistic.”

Some agencies told the airline that they needed more time between learning that they qualified to be a preferred agency and the implementation deadline, and that was part of the thinking behind the extension.

Travelers booking American Airlines basic economy fares will still only be able to earn loyalty points when they book directly on AA.com or partner airlines.

Note: This story has been updated to added a statement from ASTA President and CEO Zane Kerby.

On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new list of One, Two, and Three Key hotels in the United States. In this first ever announcement of MICHELIN Keys in the United States, hotels in Atlanta, California, Chicago, Colorado, Florida, New York, and Washington DC were eligible for the distinction. This announcement of the most outstanding hotels in the country comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in the United States includes 11 Three Key hotels, 33 Two Key hotels, and 80 One Key hotels. Want to know more about the MICHELIN Key? The Aman New York — New York, New York

The Three Key Club in New York City

Expect: The highest luxury and impeccable design in Soho, Midtown, and the Financial District. Within the small club of Three Key hotels in the United States, four make their home in New York City. The Aman New York (Midtown) and Casa Cipriani (the Financial District) both make use of glamorous Beaux Arts buildings, the former a gold-crowned skyscraper in Midtown, the latter a glamorously restored ferry terminal at the very southern tip of Manhattan. Each is a refuge: an elegant, painstakingly designed escape from bustling city life. Meanwhile, two Firmdale hotels round out the list of Three Key hotels in New York City. Each is a quintessential example of the style and execution of the group’s co-owner and interior designer, Kit Kemp. Jewels on the Coast: Up and Down California

Its sheer breadth of size and variety means it’s no surprise to announce California as the state with the most Key hotels in America. Here, we’ll point you towards coastal gems like the sublime architectural achievements in Big Sur ( Post Ranch Inn and Ventana ), beachside luxuries in Santa Monica (in particular: the newly opened Georgian ), and wine country favorites like SingleThread and the Madrona . What we love: how each one of these hotels opens the door to the very best of their locations — and gives us a look at each setting through fresh eyes.

The Chicago Athletic Association — Chicago, Illinois

Across America: The Golden Age of Celebrity

Our French Keys bask in the tradition of ancient vineyards, stone chateaus, and historic palaces. In the United States, we see a different tradition. In Los Angeles, places like Chateau Marmont , the Paramour Estate , Sunset Tower , and the Charlie date back to guests and residents as illustrious as Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. These are spaces that play ingeniously with their history, even as they forge ahead with cutting-edge amenities and experiences. But it’s not just California. New York’s historic artist hotspot, the Hotel Chelsea , once hosted Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol. Today, it decorates every space with art donated by former residents. Look too to the Chicago Athletic Association , a former member’s club for 20th century business magnates and athletes — now among the city’s most impressive and vibrant hotels. Testimonials.

"I want to personally thank you, Curtis, and Haley for putting together an amazing trip for our students. I have been teaching for 18 years and counting and have consequently taken many trips. By far, this was the smoothest and most well organized. More importantly, you and your staff are just delightful people who sincerely care about the students and programs that you are serving. I know I speak for our band students, chaperones, and staff when I say thank you from the bottom of our hearts for providing a life-changing travel experience for our students. Keep doing what you are doing. Thousands of young adults' lives are positively affected by the fine work of American Travel Consulting."
“These folks are a band director’s “Dream Team” in organization. Our band went to NYC & Philly with them, and it was the best trip I have ever been on with my bands in 40 years of teaching. From preparation to scheduling & everything in between, we could not have asked for any better of an experience. My kids & parents still talk about what a great time it was. I was able to relax & enjoy myself because I knew they had it all covered. I am more than happy to share about our experience- contact me.”
"American Travel Consulting was wonderful to work with and planned a great trip to Washington DC for the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in April of 2020. When the trip had to be cancelled due to COVID, ATC went to work immediately and secured 100% refunds for our students and parents. I totally trust that American Travel will provide the best travel services and do the right thing for our band.....every time!"
“I have been personally involved in 2 trips with American Travel Consulting to Philly and San Antonio - both have been amazing. My daughter also went to Macy’s with this group and had the best trip ever. We have a large band of over 350 kids and moving them is a major undertaking. Every detail of each trip was planned and executed flawlessly. As one of the band Dads that moves the equipment and uniforms, I’ve gotten to see the behind the scenes of what it takes to pull these trips off and these guys are amazing and get it done. Besides being the best professionals, Chris, Stacy, and Curtis are great guys I always look forward to seeing and spending some time with. My daughter has graduated but my son is a freshman in the band so can’t wait for the next great trip!!”
“We used American Travel Consulting, LLC for 2 different trips with our band. It was seamless and everything was taken care of. They anticipated any problems & took care of them for us with most of the members not even knowing there had been an issue. I highly recommend American Travel Consulting, LLC for your groups travel! Chris, Stacy, Ken & Curtis are top notch and have a great company, but more importantly they build relationships & help your group make memories for your students & families. You will not be disappointed if you choose this team for your travel plans!!”
“I used American Travel for two different trips. The first was Pre-COVID and was absolutely seamless. Great customer service and care from beginning to end. The second was supposed to happen and then COVID hit and shut everything down. American Travel was outstanding to work with throughout the process and refunded money without any issues. I highly recommend using them for your travel needs.”
“Great organization!! Highly recommend you let them take care of your group’s travel planning!”

Traveling the world is amazing, but it's not exactly easy to jump on a plane and jet off to Europe over the weekend.

As it turns out, there are tons of places on American soil that are modeled after European villages. You don't have to leave the country to get a little taste of Europe, you just have to visit one of the following places! Keep reading and comment which town you'll visit next!

U.S. Intelligence Warning to Moscow Named Specific Target of Attack

The C.I.A. told Russia that Islamic State terrorists were plotting an attack on Crocus City Hall, a concert venue.

A badly burned building with large letters spelling out “Crocus City Hall” on its damaged roof.

By Julian E. Barnes

Reporting from Washington

The U.S. warning to Russia ahead of a terrorist attack near Moscow was highly specific: Crocus City Hall was a potential target of the Islamic State, according to U.S. officials.

The warning had the right venue but imprecise timing, suggesting that the attack could come within days. Indeed, the public warning by the United States Embassy on March 7 warned of potential terrorist attacks in the next two days.

Gunmen stormed the hall on March 22, killing 144 people, the deadliest attack in Russia in nearly 20 years. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, and Russia charged four men from Tajikistan, accusing them of carrying out the massacre.

But President Vladimir V. Putin and other top officials have continued to claim, without evidence, that Ukraine could have played a role in the attack, a statement that American officials have repeatedly said was baseless.

The news that the U.S. warning specified the precise target of the attack was reported earlier Tuesday by The Washington Post.

The United States works intensely to collect intelligence on potential plots by the Islamic State and its Afghanistan-based branch, ISIS-Khorasan.

Armed with that information, the United States has been able to warn both Russia and Iran, erstwhile adversaries, about specific targets the Islamic State was planning to hit. But in both cases the warnings were not heeded, at least not enough to stop the violence.

Some Western officials said Russia paid some attention to the warning delivered by the C.I.A. station in Moscow, and took steps to investigate the threat. But the new information raises questions about why Russian intelligence failed to maintain higher security levels. At the time of the attack, no additional security measures were in place at the venue.

The Western officials have said that when the attack failed to materialize immediately, Russia appeared to have lowered its guard, potentially considering the American warning false.

On Tuesday, the Russian state-run Interfax news agency reported that Sergei Naryshkin, the head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, said the American warning was “too general” and, as a result, did not allow authorities to identify the potential attackers.

The White House, C.I.A. and other intelligence officials declined to comment on the new details of the warning. But White House officials have previously acknowledged the broad warning given to Russia.

Days before the attack, Mr. Putin was disparaging the American warnings, saying they were “outright blackmail” and attempts to “intimidate and destabilize our society.”

While Russian security services were focused on terrorism decades ago, they are now focused on Mr. Putin’s domestic opponents.

Experts have said the crackdown has diluted the focus on terrorism by the security services, potentially contributing to the failure to be able to use the American warning to prevent the attack.

While at first glance it might seem odd that the United States would tell an adversarial country like Russia of an attack, under law American intelligence agencies have a “duty to warn.” If spy agencies learn about a potential attack, they must tell the target, to enable them to take steps to protect themselves.

But the war in Ukraine, and U.S. military support for Kyiv, has created tension and suspicion between Moscow and Washington not seen since the Cold War. That appears to have led Mr. Putin and his top aides to dismiss the American warning.
