Editoral Review of Topdeck

Founded in 1973, Topdeck has been providing fun, adventurous trips around the world for 18-39 for over 40 years.

What Makes Topdeck Travel Stand Out?

Topdeck tour focuses on providing friendly and authentic guided group tours where like-minded 18-39 year old travelers can have amazing group experiences. There are several trip types to choose from, from camping, to immersive, to multi destination, to sailing.

Who Will Enjoy Traveling with Topdeck?

Sociable, adventurous, budget conscious 18-39 year olds are the kinds of traveler who will gravitate to Topdeck. Though they offer a few different distinct travel styles, there is definitely a sense of an ongoing party, with travel as the conduit and underlying shared interest.

If the idea of being around a group of similarly aged people - many of whom may be exploring internationally for the first or second time - being spontaneous, and meeting locals (often in the environment of bars or clubs) is unappealing, then Topdeck may not be your cup of tea.

Introverted travelers, or those for whom an extensively planned itinerary including many museums and historical sites is ideal, may want to hunt around before choosing a Topdeck tour.

That is not to dissuade the more observational traveler - who may very well find a group they gel with perfectly on a Topdeck tour. Only to caution that you will be surrounded by several extroverted personalities.

The bottom line is if you are game for anything, are traveling on a budget, and don’t mind fairly basic but comfortable accommodations and inexpensive meals - sometimes on the go - then you will enjoy the Topdeck tour experience.

Top Destinations

Topdeck has tours throughout the world, in Europe, Australia & New Zealand, North America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

Topdeck Travel Style

The Topdeck travel style is tied quite specifically to their audience. These tours are great for youthful and energetic 18-39 year olds looking for a good time and to make new friends.

In the interest of keeping their tours affordable, travelers with Topdeck will need to make a few allowances. For example, hostels and hotels may be situated quite far away from the city centers. You can also expect some long travel days. The more of a good sense of humor and adventure you have, the more you’ll enjoy the experience.

Why Choose a Tour With Topdeck

Feeling the urge to connect with travelers in your age group, have fun, and make lasting friendships? Topdeck has over 40 years of experience in adventure travel, which has helped them create epic low cost trips for 18-30 somethings.

These tours are certainly not for those who prefer to take things slow. You will be running around, moving between a lot of places - which in some cases means very long bus rides - going out a lot, meeting new people, and staying active throughout your tour.

If your ideal travel experience is more methodical and planned out in nature, Topdeck may not be for you.

But if you are an adventurous and social travelers eager to absorb a new culture and make new friends, then hop on board!

Financial protection

Just like having personal travel insurance, booking with a company that’s registered with both ABTA and ATOL is absolutely essential.

The collapse of UK based Thomas Cook – a 100-year-old travel company in 2019, and COVID-19 was a stark reminder that you must always travel with a company that is protected against bankruptcy!

Fortunately, Topdeck and Contiki are both ABTA registered, and ATOL protected, meaning you are completely covered if anything should happen.

ABTA enforces specific standards and ensures that your holiday is protected in the event of the company going into liquidation.

Having ATOL protection means that if the company folds before or during your travel, you get your money back – and you receive support if you’re already travelling.

Websites & communication

I highly doubt if a company’s website will be the deciding factor in who you book with. Still, it could affect your decision if the level of information varies between the Topdeck and Contiki websites.

Both operators have aesthetically pleasing and mobile friendly websites, but in my opinion, the way tour information is presented on Contiki’s website is much better than Topdeck.

Contiki makes use of bright icons and text boxes to highlight essential information such as tour inclusions, booking terms and conditions and optional activities. They also have a much more beautiful itinerary layout compared to Topdeck and include faqs and more reviews.

One thing I especially love about the Contiki tour pages is the combinations of official photos with those taken by past Contiki passengers for that particular tour. It gives you an honest snapshot of what to expect on a Contiki tour.

After almost one year of talks, Topdeck launched their new-look website in 2019 and I was disappointed. I was expecting so much more from Topdeck. The site looks like it’s stuck in the early 2000s.

Both operators have a live chat feature on their website, but unlike Topdeck, Contiki’s chat is not available 24/7.

Deals & discounts

Topdeck and Contiki are known for offering a range of deals and discounts to help make their tours more affordable for young travellers. These deals can include early booking discounts, last-minute deals, group discounts, and loyalty programs. Early booking discounts are often offered for travellers who book their tour several months in advance. These discounts can vary depending on the tour and the time of year, but they can often save travelers anywhere from 5% to 15% off the tour price. For example, Topdeck currently offers an early booking discount of up to 10% off selected tours when booked by a certain date. Last-minute deals are also commonly offered by Topdeck and Contiki, with discounts ranging from 10% to 30% off the tour price. These deals are often available for tours that are departing within a few weeks or months and are designed to fill empty spots on the tour. For example, Contiki currently offers last-minute deals on selected tours departing within the next few months, with savings of up to 30% off the tour price. Group discounts are also available for travellers who book a tour with friends or family. These discounts can vary depending on the size of the group, but they can often save travellers anywhere from 5% to 10% off the tour price. For example, Topdeck offers a group discount of 5% off the tour price for groups of 4 or more people. Loyalty programs are also available for repeat customers of Topdeck and Contiki. These programs offer rewards and discounts for travellers who have completed a certain number of tours with the company.

Choosing the right tour company for your next adventure is an important decision that can greatly impact the success and enjoyment of your trip. Be sure to compare the prices of similar tours and consider what is included in the tour price. This will help you choose the tour that offers the best value for your budget.
  • Read customer reviews: TourRadar is a great resource for reading customer reviews and ratings of Topdeck and Contiki tours. By reading reviews from past travelers, you can get a sense of what to expect from the tour experience, the quality of the tour guides, and the overall value for money. This can help you make an informed decision about which tour company to choose.

Travel. Acceptance. And the new 'normal'.

Since I could remember, I had always dreamed about working abroad. And over the past few years I’ve been lucky enough to get out there and make that dream come true – much to the disappointment of my savings (which have been non-existent for a significant period of time now…)

I’ve travelled to many far-flung corners of the globe – from Iran to Ecuador and everywhere in between. And the one thing I have come to really appreciate is: acceptance . I’ve never had to hide who I am in my home country. But if I’m completely honest, in some of the countries I have travelled to – I’ve been fearful.

Over time, I’ve learnt you can either let this fear stop you or you can let it teach you – and now I don’t let it turn me away from travelling to particular places. If anything, travelling to these places showed me how important it is to be surrounded by acceptance. And how truly free you feel when you are.

top deck travel age

Before working for Topdeck, I travelled around Europe and experienced a lot of what the continent has to offer. But that was nothing compared to what being a Trip Leader has taught me. It’s opened my eyes to how amazingly open-minded some parts of Europe are!

I grew up in Perth, Australia and same-sex PDA’s were not common to see compared to the bigger and ‘prouder’ cities of Melbourne and Sydney.

But in cities like Amsterdam, Berlin, Madrid and many others – I witnessed same-sex couples walking hand-in-hand without fear or gawking eyes from strangers. And on the odd occasion where eyes did stare, not a single f*ck seemed to be given. This was my heaven.

top deck travel age

Life on the road in Europe exposed me to LGBTIQ+ communities everywhere, and that this way of life is widely accepted as ‘normal’: an extremely welcomed realisation for me.

What I loved even more was, as a Topdeck Trip Leader – I was able to introduce this open-mindedness to passengers from all over the world and explain the shock that some people might experience at being surrounded by so much acceptance.

Seeing Topdeckers exposed to these environments for the first time was amazing – especially when you could see the real impact it had on them.

Sometimes you can see people’s perspective change in one single moment. They question the way they understood things. And they come to a conclusion that this new form of openness they were seeing was better than what they previously knew.

top deck travel age

One of the most amazing things I’ve experienced on the road, has been getting to know people younger than me having wildly more open values than myself at that age. It’s showed me that people and societies are changing – they are becoming more open and more accepting.

Those moments where people challenge their understanding of the world – when they begin to accept what’s different or unfamiliar and change their definition of ‘normal’. That is what drove me to travel in the first place. And will continue to do so in the future.

So, if you take anything from my story – let be an understanding that travel changes you. Be open to it and embrace what it means.

Reviews of topdeck tours.

It was incredibly amazing . I loved every part of it . I would recommend everyone to go on this trip . We had such a great local tour guide. thanks for this experience.
I truly enjoyed myself on the Deep Delve Spain and Portugal tour. The itinerary was fantastic. The most exotic destination was certainly Sintra and the most thrilling destination was San Sebastian. There is room for improvement in that a second night in Barcelona would be great. Monika our tour leader and Firmino the driver were great to be around. As a solo-traveler I felt secure and well informed along the journey. As an improvement, it would have been nice to have more time with Monika for more of our evening events. The accommodations were comfortable and most hotels were in great areas with the exception of Koisi hotel which is on a steep inclined hill and inaccessible by bus. Overall I had a great experience and made some new friends.
Delve Deep: New Zealand North Island was incredible! Lots of options and flexibility. Tim our trip leader was awesome and super accommodating. Would highly recommend!
