How to get to Bartolome Island?

There are two ways to get to Bartolome Island in the Galapagos. First, one a Galapagos cruise that includes a Bartolome Island trip on its itinerary. Second, taking a day tour to Bartolome Island from Santa Cruz Island.

The pinnacle of Bartolome Island

The trip to Bartolome combines with one of these destinations: » Sullivan Bay » Golden Beach » Chinese Hat Island

Everything begins at a meeting point assigned by the operator you’ve hired for the tour to Bartolome. Afterwards, you travel around 45 minutes to get to Itabaca canal. Once on board, you sail for 2 hours, until you reach Bartolome Island or a destination that combines, depending on the yacht’s itinerary.

Once on the Island, you begin a walk up to the lookout with the best view in the Galapagos Islands. After that, you’ll have lunch on board the yacht. Depending on the permission granted to your vessel by the Galapagos National Park, you’ll do one of the following activities:

Sullivan Bay and its pahoehoe lava beach

» Sullivan Bay of Santiago Island : You’ll snorkel and during dry season, you can see penguins. Alternatively, ask to be taken directly to the beach to go on a short hike over dry lava Pahoehoe.

Galapagos Penguins on Bartolome Island

» Golden Beach on Bartolome Island: Throughout the trips I’ve made to Bartolome Island I’ve never taken a tour that includes Playa Dorada on its itinerary. However, as in other tours, you have the option to snorkel or enjoy the beach.

Chinese Hat Island and its volcanic cone

Chinese Hat Island and its volcanic cone

» Chinese Hat Island : Two vessels include Bartolomé + Chinese Hat in its itinerary. Yachts depart Monday and Friday. The snorkeling activity takes place on Playa Dorada on the yacht that departs on Monday, while the yacht that departs on Friday will take you snorkeling on Sombrero Chino / Chinese Hat and on both tours you will have a wet landing on Sombrero Chino / Chinese Hat followed by short hike.

I recommend reserving far in advance if you want to go on this tour to Bartolome Island . Make sure you check availability far in advance, especially if you plan on traveling during the months of July, August or December.

Terrific experience. The boat was comfortable with a great crew. Mauricio was informative and painted a terrific picture of the past of Bartolomue Island. Nature was its usual amazing self. I was solo but made quick friends with my terrific companions from L.A. Thank you for an unforgettable experience.

We went out to Bartolome Island, the trip started with a bus ride to the docks. The boat was slow, which was nice, we sat our on the front soaking up rays and watching the wildlife. The guide was lovely, and the tour was great. The highlight was swimming with penguins!!! An experience we will never forget, we enjoyed this immensely.

One of the best excursions ! We traveled with out family of 7, the service was second to none. Highly impressed with the level of professionalism and logistics… A must do !

Bartolome Island we went for a slightly more expensive boat and glad we did as we could see the difference in price, you get what you pay for. Great trip there and back and delicious food on board.

We scheduled 6 trips with Choko and are very impressed with the quality and delivery of the tours and the customer service from Christian. For example: the Espanola tour was cancelled due to avian flu and we got the refund back via PayPal in no time. Very pleasant experience, will recommend Chocko tours to everyone.

The Bartolome trip was excellent – we ended up being booked with a very good excursion company: knowledgeable guide and friendly crew on a nice boat/yacht. The Sullivan Bay snorkel was spectacular and the hike up to the “Instagram view” on Bartolome made for a long but perfect day.

Hi I am looking to book some tours from 24th to 31st december

Hi Thomas, sure, but there is for December 23, enter here http://www.choko.tour/book-tours

Booked a tour to Bartolome Island from Santa Cruz Island through ChokoTrip. The web site provided all the information required including the comment that the cheapest tour may not be the most satisfying. We booked a tour on the a yacht and were extremely satisfied with the experience. The booking process was simple and we received quick responses to our questions. The yacht was comfortable and the crew and guide were great. Lunch was delicious. Overall a great experience.

Excellent tour and great booking experience with Choko Trip. I thouroughly enjoyed the experience even though I do not snorkel.

Not knowing much about the tour companies that schedule Galapagos tours, I didn’t want to make a poor decision on whom to work with so I scheduled our daily tours through 4 different companies. Choko was heads above the other three in every way. Christian provided a swift reply to reservation requests. The reservations were accurate. Questions were answered quickly. I also found the information on the website extremely helpful, accurate, and complete. Given that most scheduling companies offer the same tours using the same boats, I strongly recommend Christian.

We opted for flying into San Cristobal, taking the 360 San Cristobal and Isla Lobos tours. Because of bird flu, Espanola was closed. As I understand it, there is a 180 San Cristobal tour. As the last half of the 360 is very rough with no stops, I recommend taking the 180. The highlands tour can be skipped.

We then took a ferry (30 people) to Santa Cruz. We took the Santa Cruz Bay tour, Isabela with the ferry to and from on the same day, Bartolomei with Chinese Hat, and a highlands tour. All were great.

This approach allowed us to do things in the evenings on islands and sleep in a still bed every night. It was also much cheaper than a cruise that takes people to some places that are not very interesting. We swam with sharks, rays, turtles, seals, and fish. We saw frigates, blue-footed boobies, masked boobies, tortoises, and seals.

Remember, always take the largest boat available. When the boats go from island to island, it takes usually about 2 hours, they go very fast, and it can be rough.

The tour bartolome was great, the boat was wonderful and the staff was really nice, always taking care of us and making sure we were always confortable. Lunch was perfect, the food, the view, the sharing with all the group together. Bartolome island is really beautiful and we were very lucky with the weather bit our guide was really amazing. Snorkelling in sombrero chino was a superb experience, with all the fishes, all the animals and the waters so clean and with so much visibility. It was a wonderful experience and i recommend to everyone.

We had an amazing trip to Bartolome last week. Choko helped us book it and he was extremely helpful and responsive. We got to snorkel with penguins and sea turtles! The ship and crew were very attentive and wonderful with our kids. Highly recommend!

Choko was able to get us on a Bartolome tour when others couldn’t find availability. We loved the food and snacks on the boat, which was also very comfortable. The guide made sure to make sure our children (ages 5 and 9) were included in the activities.

The view from atop Bartolome was magnificent and the snorkeling and beach in Sullivan Bay were the favorite of our trip.

This trip was a 3 hour journey on the boat each way, so that was a downside if you get seasick. It does make a very full (but amazing) day.

Choko helped us booking the 1-day tour to Bartolome Island with Sullivan Bay on the Luxury Yahat. Booking process is easy and fast. He contacted the tour operator for our hotel pick up/ drop off. The guide/crew members are friendly and professional, who made the tour very enjoyable. The foods/drinks. snacks are excellent. I’d recommend to my friends, who are interested in visiting Galapagos.

Booking the Bartolome tour was easy and fast. The service during the trip was excellent. Good food, comfortable boat (as we chose) and great service. Totally recommended!

Fue un Tour muy largo porque la embarcación que nos toco iba muy lenta… la subida a Bartolome fue bonita pero coincidió con el mediodia y el calor era demasiado. Los paisajes bonitos. Luego pusimos hacer snorkel.

Bartolome Island: Great trip, really good cook, we had a wonderful lunch with a lot of vegetables, snorkling was amazing.

The yacht was fantastic as well as the hike, and lunch but the beach snorkeling was a disappointment. Locations are scheduled by the park and we got the poor choice

management is great, but the boat a bit old and lunch is good

but all is OK great time great trip

Our day cruise to Bartolome was absolutely amazing!!! The tour was very well organized from the meeting point in the morning, all the way to the drop off. Our guide was extremely educational and we saw so many animals! We saw dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays, penguins, lizards, crabs, birds, sea lions, and sharks! I would suggest bringing cash if you need to rent a wetsuit, for beer, and for tipping. Other than that, they take care of all the rest! Thank you for a very memorable day!!!!

We scheduled this trip to Bartolome Island with Choko and everything was wonderful. This is a must-do while on the islands and everything was pretty easy when booking through Chiko. Strongly recommend it.

Amazing trip to Bartolomé! Well worth it.

Excellent tour. Good snorkeling and Bartolomme is amazing. Tour guide was excellent informative. Great food on the boat. Booked through choko Thanks again 🙂

I would recommend this trip. Nice boat, good lunch and excellent snorkeling.

I had some travel issues in Guayaquil (thank you Delta!) and Choko made arrangements last minute and booked me and my family a trip to Bartolome Fantastic experience, great boat, great bilingual guide and crew. Fully recommended! Thanks again Choko

It was a fabulous trip. We went on other boat trips booked by other operators, and none had as nice of a boat or as knowledgable of a guide. Thank you so much. This was a trip highlight for sure!

Our trip to Bartolome was great- thank you to Choko for arranging this for us. Our tour guide provided us with lots of information about the island and made our experience very enjoyable. Breakfast, snacks, and lunch were provided- all were very good. We had a great time! Thanks Choko

Choko is a great helper in scheduling tuors in Galápagos. The Baltolomé tour was wonderful. The vessel was very comfortable, the personnel very nice and the food excellent. The small Bartolomé island is a panoramic highlight, and the snorkeling at Sullivan Bay was amazing. The whole trip was a dream come true. Thanks !!

Buenas tardes!

Amazing tour with the Catamaran to Bartolomé! The real highlight of our Galapagos trip. Choko made the arrangements with the local agency sooo quickly! And he is always available via email or whatsapp to clear out any doubt. 10 out of 10, truly recommended!

Choko is the best, as every excursion I did was memorable. Bartolome is a must see in the Galapagos. The vista from atop the island is really the best view in all of the islands. Then snorkeling afterwards was great too. Highly recommend this excursion and Choko!!

My husband and i had very little time in the Galapagos Islands. We booked a day trip to Bartolome with Choko Trip. The catamaran was great. it was a smooth ride. There were 14 people on our tour and the boat was a perfect size for all of us. Our guide was fantastic! Very knowledgeable and witty. The crew prepared a delicious lunch. We enjoyed this trip very much! Choko made it easy to book. We used the WhatApp to contact our guide the day before. This made it easy to hookup with the tour on the day of the trip. Thanks for a great experience!

Increíble experiencia. 100% recomendado. Viajamos con mi esposo. El tour a Bartolomé supero nuestras expectativas. La embarcación que seleccionamos con ayuda de Choko fue La Española.

A fantastic place worth a visit! Everything worked out perfectly, Choko’s arrangements were very accurate and useful.

My adult daughter and I had a wonderful time on our trip to Bartolome Island . Our yacht, the Wind Rose was spectacular. The captain was very professional, as were the rest of the crew. They were also a lot of fun. The on board chef was wonderful, our lunch was delicious. Our guide, Juan Fernando was amazing, so knowledgeable and considerate of the comfort of all of the guests. It was the highlight of our stay in the Galapagos. Well worth the price.

Yes this is an expensive day trip, but if you really want to see pinnacle rock as i did, then you should go. the lunch was actually really good, and enjoyed snorkeling around the island across the way.

We did a land based 16night trip to Galapagos with day trips & ferries arranged by Choko….Bartolome was an amazing island with spectacular views. The boat was the Altamar..it was great, very luxurious with cooked breakfast onboard fruit scrambled eggs toast etc on proper plates cutlery etc..the Boat was very smooth with ample seating inside or on rear on comfortable patio chairs or top deck. After the walk on Bartolome had a full cooked lunch again table service onboard.Snorkelled off a beach en route to Bartolome with tuna & crackers snack after. Cannot recommend boat Altamar enough we also went on the same boat for our North Seymour trip..Thanks to Choko all went very easily..

Our trip to Bartolome Island was wonderful. We saw so much wildlife including a penguin! The snorkeling was good, saw many schools of blue fish. Saw one sea iguana eating under water also.

Our guide was Ricardo who spoke great English. He works as a freelancer and was hired by the tour company for the day.

The boat could have been better. The exhaust fumes were terrible when sitting on the back of the boat. The food was mediocre. That’s the only complaint.

I would recommend to anyone to go and experience Bartolome Island. Will never forget it.

I contacted Choko to book a tour to Bartelome. I told him I get seasick and was concerned about the boat size. He booked me on a wonderful tour on a large yacht. The tour was amazing, great food, great guide, great staff. The booking process was easy and Choko always respomded to my questions. The tour company was top notch.

On short notice, Choko helped us get a tour to Bartolome Island. On Choko’s website he comments that “you get what you pay for”. The Yachat was not the lowest price, but we feel like we truly got our money’s worth. First, Choko make the arrangements quickly and smoothly for us. This included easy payment methods by credit card. The boat is kept in immaculate condition. It was more than comfortable for the 16 people on our tour. We could sit inside an air conditioned cabin, or out on the front or rear decks. They cooked us a fine lunch, including making special arrangements for people who were vegetarian or with other food preferences. They had 2 good toilets, and cabins for changing clothes before and after snorkeling. They also provided snacks, towels, and nice snorkeling equipment. They called us out onto the decks to see fish jumping, proposes swimming with the boat, and other sights en route to the island. Our guide, Felipe Ayala, was outstanding. Full of details and descriptions of geology, flora, and fauna. The plan for the day was well described and clear. Bartolome Island is the iconic spot seen in many Galapagos photographs. There is a boardwalk to the top of a tuff cone. We did not climb quickly, but rather moved at a pace that all could accommodate, while learning much about the amazing geology of the islands during our climb. Felipe described the development of various islands in the Galapagos, and explained the connections between flora, fauna, and geology. Later, we went to a beautiful spot for snorkeling before returning to Santa Cruz Island. We were fully informed at every moment. It was a delightful and comfortable day. We never would have been able to find this great trip to Bartolome Island without the help of Choko! We deeply appreciate his lightning fast responses to email and WhatsApp messages, and all that he did to make this unforgettable moment possible for us.

We scheduled a trip to Bartolome with Choko. Everything was great. I found the follow up to be wonderful.

Our Testimonial

Good reviews by clients.

This is probably the most popular day tour from Santa Cruz. You first take a 45 min bus from Puerto Ayora to Ithabaca Canal, then followed by a 2h+ navigation. Along the way, you may want to pray for a fantastic clear skies at Bartolome. Thankfully that was the case for me. Otherwise I would be grouchy. It was the absolute perfect weather. The views are stunning. This day trip is not wildlife focused unlike others. But we still saw penguins, turtles, and sea lions. The afternoon of the day trip is usually spent snorkeling at Sullivan Bay or Chinese Hat, depending on your itinerary.

This was definitely our favorite day trip in the Galapagos! The boat ride from Santa Cruz is roughly 1h45 to 2 hours. On our way there, we past right by Daphne Major, which was a unique small inactive volcano. Once we arrived, we hiked a top the main peak, and looked out towards the stunning famous Galapagos picture showed in all the magazines, and online. The colors are breathtaking, and the landscape as unique as I've ever seen! We then got the chance to snorkel, and saw some of the coolest underwater wildlife ever! I encountered white tip reef sharks, large Stingrays, an abundance of fish, a lonely penguin, and the coolest thing ever, swimming with the Sea Lions! Just an incredible day that I will soon never forget!

The Bartolome Island day tour begins early in the morning to take advantage of the best hours of light. We will travel from Puerto Ayora by van or bus to the Itabaca channel, where our boat will be waiting for us to sail to Bartolome Island.

Once in Bartolome Island, we will disembark for a short walk that will allow us to reach the island’s natural viewpoint, with a height of 115 meters above sea level. From here we can enjoy a 360-degree view, which includes views of the nearby islands and the famous Pinnacle Rock. Besides spectacular views, Bartolome Island has an intriguing geological past. The island’s exact age hasn’t been able to be determined, but based on its characteristics; it is considered one of the youngest islands in this area. From the viewpoint, it is also possible to appreciate other interesting formations, such as the parasitic cones, formed by prior lava eruptions.

This Bartolome Island day tour includes, besides the viewpoint, another visit to the nearby beaches: the north beach, where we will be able to enjoy the sea; the south beach, where we will be able to go on a walk to observe rays and blue sharks; however, swimming or snorkeling is not allowed in this beach because it is nesting site for sea turtles.

To finish the day, we will visit Sullivan bay, which is located next to Bartolome Island. This bay features an interesting recently formed lava field. We will snorkel in the bay’s calm waters. After this visit, we will return to Puerto Ayora.

The Bartolome Island Tour is the most iconic tour you can do on the Galapagos islands.

You will go on a gorgeous sailing ship starting at Santa Cruz island, passing through the Daphne islands, and arrive at the beautiful Bartolomé island, almost an islet from Santiago island.

With luck, you might spot some penguins as we did and then you go snorkel on one of the paradisiac beaches in the near.

BARTOLOME ISLAND TOUR curiosities

The name of the island comes from Charles Darwin’s friend Bartholomew James Sullivan who was the principal surveyor and second lieutenant aboard the HMS Beagle .

Bartolomé is a volcanic tuff islet on the east side of Santiago island.

It is the most photographed place in the Galapagos archipelago.

The most iconic part of the island is the Pinnacle Rock.

According to the official Galapagos Conservancy website , the Pinnacle Rock is a volcanic cone , it was formed when magma was expelled from an underwater volcano; the sea cooled the hot lava, which then exploded, only to come together and form this huge rock made up of many thin layers of basalt”

American airmen troops used the pinnacle as a target during WWII .

It is one of the younger islands in the Galapagos archipelago.

The Pinnacle Rock appeared in the movie Master and Commander , with Russel Crowe.

HOW TO DO THE BARTOLOME ISLAND TOUR?

You have to book the tour with a travel agency. I booked with Galapagos Dreams and they picked me up at my hotel at 6 am.

Yes, 6 am. If you come to the Galapagos and don’t want to spend your entire day at the beach, expect the tours to start around that time.

Especially diving tours and tours that you need to drive a long way so they can start, like this one.

The van picks you up and some other people in the other hotels and drives all the way through the island until it reaches the Itabaca Channel, from where the ferries to Baltra island depart, the boats to the diving spots, and the one to Bartolomé.

MY EXPERIENCE ON THE BARTOLOME ISLAND TOUR FROM SANTA CRUZ, GALAPAGOS

This was my fifth day on Santa Cruz island, I had already seen most of the island and I was almost fully recovered from my food poisoning from two days ago.

This is therefore the third island I visited on the Galapagos and I was based in Santa Cruz so it was a Full Day tour.

Here I leave you with the other attractions you can find on the gorgeous Santa Cruz island. You can also  (click here)  to see my other adventures in Ecuador.

The idilic landscape of Bartolome island

THE SAILING SHIP EXPERIENCE

After picking me up at 5:30h we went to pick up some other people at their hotels and we drove off for 1 hour to Itabaca Channel.

Once we got there we got on a  rubber boat that took us to our big sailing ship.

Inside we were greeted by the crew and started the trip to Bartolomé Island.

As soon as we got in we left our shoes in a container, dropped our backpacks and went for breakfast inside the ship.

One hour after starting the trip we passed through Daphne Mayor and Daphne Minor islands.

Two hours later we reached Bartolomé Island. It is a 3-hour ride. There wasn’t much wind so we didn’t use the sails.

On the way, you can go to the front of the ship and observe, together with the guide, jumping manta rays, turtles, many different birds, and flying fishes.

Our guide was specially trained in spotting wildlife which was great.

Once we arrived at Bartolomé Island we went down from the ship to the same rubber boat from the start and we were dropped at a little port full of Grapsus Grapsus orange crabs.

The beginning of the sailing trip

EXPLORING BARTOLOME ISLAND

Once we arrived at the island we immediately spotted a lonely penguin swimming around and many orange crabs, what a delight.

The main attraction on this island is the viewpoint at the top of the island but for me the entire environment is unbelievable.

You are dropped on a volcanic desertic yellow-brownish landscape surrounded by blue-turquoise water full of colorful crabs and white moss-like plants.

Then we started climbing to the viewpoint and the guide starts explaining to us about these incredibly resistant plants and some cacti that live with almost no water.

It’s a really arid landscape so it’s impressive that there’s life at all on the island. We could spot some lava lizards too.

Along the way, you see volcanic cones, or collapsed ones, and lava tunnels. He told us when he was young and there weren’t many restrictions in Galapagos he could go inside these volcanic cones with his friends and clients.

He showed us that most of the rocks you see look quite big and heavy but are actually very light.

After climbing for let’s say half an hour with stops we arrived at the viewpoint and stood there appreciating and taking some photos.

You could see from up there how huge Santiago island is in the background and it has a much different landscape than Bartolomé.

It’s very green and it had had a quite “recent” eruption so you could see the lava flow on its shores.

Then it was time to go down and do some snorkeling.

Spotting penguins as soon as we arrived to the little pier.

SNORKELING AROUND THE ISLAND AND THE RETURN TO SANTA CRUZ

And to conclude our tour we went snorkeling between Bartolomé and Santiago islands.

We saw so much life, comparable to a scuba dive day really.

There were multiple black and whitetip reef sharks, huge schools of fish, turtles, many many gorgeous starfish, and penguins.

There was a cave with four or five sleeping blacktip reef sharks, there were many king angelfish and yellow-tailed surgeon fish, some puffer fish, incredible really.

The coolest and most unexpected thing I saw while snorkeling was the lava tunnels underwater.

That I had never seen, even scuba diving. Amazing, it looked like man-made structures.

And that was it, after snorkeling, we went back to the boat and had again a 3-hour journey back to Santa Cruz. This was by far one of the coolest tours I have done on the Galapagos. Totally worth the money.

Thanks for reading through and I hope you have fun on this tour!

I’ll drop a couple of my other favorite photos from the tour down below, enjoy!

Lakes in Ecuador

Main Lakes of Ecuador

The Galapagos archipelago is made up of a lot of intriguing islands, but one of the most scenic is arguably Bartolome Island. Bartolome Island is named after a naturalist friend of Charles Darwin, named Sir Bartholomew James Sullivan, who worked on the HMS Beagle. Incidentally, this man was also the inspiration of the name of Sullivan Bay on Santiago Island, not far from Bartolome Island. The island is just 1.2 square kilometers (or 0.5 square miles). The maximum altitude on the island is just 374 feet, or 114 meters in height. Bartolome Island It is comprised of an extinct volcano, and it is believed to be one of the younger Galapagos Islands. However, it is still 1.5 million to two million years old. Here we will explain everything you need to know regarding your visit to Bartolome Island.

Galapagos bartolome island - Pinnacle Rock

Bartolome Island Wildlife

A significant number of Galapagos species can be found on this tiny island. A commonly seen feature of Bartolome Island wildlife is the Galapagos penguin . But the penguin is not the only bird living on this small island. It is also possible to see hawks, herons and finches.

The sea life around the island is particularly diverse, and it includes sea lions, sea turtles, a lot of different types of fish, and white-tipped reef sharks. If you are lucky you might also get to spot a ray in the water.

Overall the tour was good. Some days were excellent and some days were just ok, one afternoon bad and the last morning was amiss. We understood we would be touring the Darwin museum, but we were out of the boat so early nothing was open. If only we were told……we did get to see the Galapagos giant tortoises which was the only plus. Another downside was the dumping us off at the island of the lava. What we did should have taken us 30 minutes, but we spent over an hour walking over hot cracking lava and loose chunks. One of our group slipped on a loose lava chunk and was close to falling backwards down a cliff We all felt as if we were dumped Eden needs work on the sewer and air conditioning in the dining room, bar area and briefing area. We all were sweating through every meal and every briefing. The snorkeling trip to pinnacle rock was outstanding. The captain joined us and pointed out life we would have surely missed The crew on the yacht were friendly happy and hardworking

More about  Bartolome

This small island is located on the centre of the archipelago , and on a clear day, more than ten islands can be spotted from the top of the viewpoint. The diversity and richness of this island is related to the   Upwelling Phenomenon , very cold water surrounds the shore and provides food for many marine species.

It is an unpopulated island .

The Pinnacle Rock , formed by an eroded toba cone, is the most emblematic formation of the archipelago.  On its base, a small colony of   Penguins   cohabit with   Sea Lions   and   Marine Birds.   On the visit site of the beach, one can observe juvenile sharks swimming along the shore line, and sometimes on the surroundings, a hawk domains the air.

Great snorkeling opportunities   with  penguins  and  sea lions  off a golden-sand beach at the foot of popular  Pinnacle Rock .

Bartolome Island Visitors Sites

Bartolome map

The most iconic place in the Galapagos.

Located at the center of the archipelago, Bartolome is one of the most frequently visited sites of all the islands. The highest point is only 374 ft (114 m) above sea level and it is separated from the island of Santiago by Sullivan Bay. The island has a surface area of 0.74 mi (1.2 km) It is an excellent site for snorkeling, filled with the breathtaking volcanic landscapes that make this corner of the world so unique.

We have two landing possibilities: a dock and a beach. The dock, made out of lava and concrete, soon turns into a wooden staircase built to avoid erosion and consists of 372 steps. It takes us to the island’s summit, where we find what probably constitutes the most photographed site in the Galapagos: Pinnacle Rock.

Due to its altitude, the lack of vegetation is immediately noticeable. Pioneer plants are observed, they are called this way because they are the first to establish roots on new ground. They include Tiquilia nesiotica (which is endemic to the island) and Chamaesyce (known as sand mat or spurge in English), lava cactus, and Scalesia bushes. Behind the beach, we have the dunes covered by mangroves.

The coralline beach next to Pinnacle Rock is a wet landing site from which we are able to snorkel amongst tropical fish and perhaps sea lions and penguins; they rest on the lava of the intertidal zone and sometimes decide to take a dip.

Bartolome Island: Named after Sir Bartholomew Sulivan of the British Navy, Bartolome Island covers an area of 1.2 km² and reaches a maximum altitude of 114 meters. This island showcases some of the most stunning landscapes in the entire archipelago. It consists of an extinct volcano and features a variety of vibrant volcanic formations in red, orange, green, and bright black hues. The lava cacti of the Galapagos have colonized the new lava fields here. The island is renowned for its iconic landmark, the Pinnacle, which is a symbol of the Galapagos Islands. Diving and snorkeling in this area provide incredible encounters with penguins, sea lions, white tip reef sharks, and other tropical fish. Bartolome is also a seasonal mating and nesting site for green turtles. The bay offers an excellent opportunity for swimming, and the twin bays are separated by a narrow isthmus.

Sullivan Bay: Sullivan Bay boasts a unique landscape characterized by a pair of eroded scoria lava cones. These cones were engulfed by a relatively recent pahoehoe lava flow, forming one of the world’s finest examples of this geological phenomenon.

Bartolome Island viewpoint, Galapagos Island.

We will start this adventure at 05:30 AM – 06:15 AM , one of our vehicles will pick you up at your hotel.

Then we will go to the Itabaca Channel where we will board the boat in which we will sail to Bartolomé Island.

Once we have arrived at Bartolomé , we will disembark and begin a tour of a path that will take us to one of the best views of all the Galapagos Islands. We will climb 115 meters above sea level, about 400 steps, from there, we will be able to see the famous Galapagos pinnacle, t he entire Bartolomé Island and part of Santiago Island, in one day, we will have a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding islands. and on a clear day even from others further away such as Marchena and La Pinta. An incomparable panoramic vision!

From the highest point and to the east you can see splash-type cones, formed by drops of thick lava. These cones are known as Parasitic Cones since they were not formed by the action of the main event.

To the west we find tuff cones (formed from sedimented volcanic ash) and eroded remains. The most representative Pinnacle of the Galapagos Islands and especially of this Island is a tuff cone. The main attraction of La Isla Bartolomé is the geological interpretation of the formation of the Galapagos Islands that can be given on this site.

In the visiting area there are two beaches and they are linked by a path. On the south beach you can take w alks with the possibility of observing rays and blue sharks (endemic Galapagos shark) from the shore, so activities such as swimming or snorkeling are prohibited on this beach.

In contrast to the south beach, on the north beach you can do surface diving (snorkeling) , during most of the year the sea is very calm which helps to carry out activities such as swimming.

Here our tour will end, we will return again to Puerto Ayora .

This tour will start early from town , then a bus ride towards Itabaca Canal where you will board the yacht for this excursion. This program includes sightseeing , hike , snorkel , snorkel equipment , lunch on board and much more. Finally you will be taken back to Puerto Ayora for your last night at the Galapagos Bartolome: The little island Bartolome is very small and 114m high situated close to Santiago Island. When the volcano that formed Bartolomé erupted, there was not any water present resulting in large amounts of basalt on this island (when water is present in an eruption tuff is created). The basalt hardened together with air creating very light rocks. Bartolome’s surface is covered with volcanic ash, which is supposed to be blown over from Santa Cruz Island. The island consists of an extinct volcano and volcanic formations in a variety of red, orange, green, and glistening black. Pinnacle Rock is the eroded remains of a tuff cone. This large partially eroded lava formation was created when magma expelled from the volcano reached the sea. When the seawater’s cooled, the hot lava caused an explosion. The exploded particles eventually fasten together forming a rock composed of thin layers. Bartolome’s Pinnacle Rock has become one of the most photographed sights in the islands. As a prominent landmark it was used as a target for US military during World War II (you can still see the bullet holes). Galapagos Penguins are living behind the rock. A small submerged crater can be seen just offshore. To the east you can see a series of small spatter cones. Lying beside the Pinnacle Rock are twin half moon shaped beaches. On the northern one (wet landing) you are allowed to swim and snorkel. Don’t miss that!

Bartolome Island Day Tour

From: 6:00 am. to: 5:00 pm..

Bartolome Island (Spanish: Isla Bartolomé) is a volcanic islet in the Galapagos Island group. It is a volcanic islet just off the east coast of Santiago Island. It is one of the "younger" islands in the Galapagos archipelago. This island, and Sulivan Bay on Santiago island, are named after naturalist and lifelong friend of Charles Darwin, Sir Bartolome James Sulivan, who was a lieutenant aboard HMS Beagle.

With a total land area of just 1.2 square kilometres (0.5 square miles), this island offers some of the most beautiful landscapes in the archipelago. The island consists of an extinct volcano and a variety of red, orange, green, and glistening black volcanic formations.

Bartolomé has a volcanic cone that is easy to climb and provides great views of the other islands. Bartolomé is famous for its Pinnacle Rock, which is the distinctive characteristic of this island, and the most representative landmark of the Galápagos.

It has two visitor sites. At the first one, one may swim and snorkel around Pinnacle Rock; the underwater world there is really impressive. Snorkelers are in the water with the penguins, marine turtles, white-tipped reef sharks, and other tropical fish. The bay is also an excellent place to go swimming. The twin bays are separated by a narrow isthmus.

Galapagos penguins are frequently seen, and a small cave behind Pinnacle Rock houses a breeding colony. Seasonally, Bartolomé is the mating and nesting site for the green turtles. With herons, they make use of the gentler beaches. The Galápagos lava cacticolonize the new lava fields.

Galapagos Blue-footed Boobies

The Galapagos is an enchanted place, and it has stayed that way largely because it has been protected. Several islands in the remote volcanic archipelago remain as pristine as they were well before Charles Darwin first visited in 1835.

But for how long? With nature tourism surging since the pandemic, it’s not surprising that the Galapagos, 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, is now at the top of everyone’s bucket list. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTCC), wildlife is now the primary motivator for travelers who want to experience nature. Where better to see it than the Galapagos Islands?

A Fragile Ecosystem

However, the rise in tourism in the Galapagos is putting a strain on resources the Islands can provide such as fresh water, electricity (provided by diesel-run generators), food and transportation. With so many travelers wanting to visit the Galapagos—and they should—how is this sustainable? What needs to happen right now to protect the people and wildlife of the Galapagos, so that we can all enjoy it for years to come?

According to Dolores Gangotena, co-founder of Quasar Expeditions , a pioneer in responsible and regenerative tourism with her husband, Eduardo Diez, “The number of tourists the Galapagos receives–300,000 in 2023–is not sustainable,” she says. “Every year I see more people living in the Islands, more hotels being built, more cars, more motorcycles, and even more dogs, which also pose a threat to the fragile ecoystem,” she continues.

Landscape View of Darwin's Arch near Darwin Island of Galapagos.

The Galapagos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Park managed by the Galapagos National Park Service, the Charles Darwin Research Center and the Ecuadorian government. For the past 12 years, the Charles Darwin Foundation has warned about the need to monitor the human capacity of the islands. If strained much further, it could cause an extreme threat to everything that makes Galapagos such a draw to begin with, according to Gangotena. “Change needs to happen, and it needs to happen now,” she says.

Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism

Gangotena first visited the Galapagos in 1969 on a school trip, and the experience was life-changing. Her love of nature and passion to preserve it inspired her to launch Quasar Expeditions in 1986. The mission was simple: “to share nature with the world in order to protect it, and keep the destinations as pristine as we found them,” she says. When Gangotena and Diez founded Quasar—now a family business, with their sons—they were the first small-boat luxury cruise company in the Islands, and they have been leaders in sustainable tourism ever since.

A family business: Quasar Expeditions founders Dolores Gangotena and husband Eduardo Diez with sons, ... [+] in the Galapagos

An outspoken advocate for conservation in the Galapagos, Gangotena says that unless oversight tightens up and the footprint slows down, she is worried for the future of the Islands. “People using the resources of any natural area need to understand the impact of their actions and know how to protect, prevent damage, and learn love for the destination,” she says.

According to Gangotena, stronger regulation for fishing boats is needed to prevent over-fishing. (Global warming is already posing a threat to wildlife by diminishing food sources like fish.) Education about “proper garbage disposal, recycling, and using state of the art engines and generators that consume less fossil fuels” is important. Small boats for day trips and artisanal fishing need to be better regulated to protect wildlife. And policymakers need to work closely with conservationist groups like the Charles Darwin Foundation to monitor and manage the impact on resources in the Galapagos, which can have a ripple effect on people and wildlife.

Environmental and Community Impact

Over the years, Quasar has been involved with supporting the Galapagos community as well as the environment. The company has funded a project to educate teachers and students on how to become stewards of the environment. The company sources locally and Gangotena supports local craftspeople and nonprofits throughout Ecuador. She has created an organic vegetable farm project and a hospitality training school on the islands, and offers students a chance to spend time on board the Quasar yachts in order to observe firsthand what may become an employment opportunity for the future.

By keeping the Quasar expeditions small–two elegant yachts that house 16 and 32 guests onboard–guests not only have a richer more intimate experience, but the environmental impact is significantly lower than it would be on one of the larger boats that tour the area. “Smaller is always better,” she says. “Every guest is given individual attention by the naturalists and personal interactions with the wildlife, in order to enjoy every single moment nature offers us when there.”

In the Galapagos Islands, off of Floreana Island a Galapagos sea turtle (Chelonia mydas agassisi) ... [+] swims in Champion Islet

When travelers snorkel off the coast of Santiago Island with Quasar, they share the sea with an underwater world: giant sea tortoises in suspended animation; juvenile sea lions, curious enough to paddle just inches away from your mask; schools of electric-hued tropical fish; tiny but speedy penguins. As the sun slices through a tranquil mangrove lagoon at Bahia Elizabeth off Isabela Island, kayakers scour the waters for rays and sea lions, which are plentiful and easy to spot. A hike up to Darwin’s Lake reveals unobstructed views of sea and sky that extend for many miles. Pelicans and cormorants crisscross the sky. Marine iguanas build nests in the sand or sun themselves on the lava rocks. Nearly half of all life on the Galapagos–marine and land iguanas, Darwin's finches, Galapagos giant tortoises, Galapagos sea lions, blue- and red-footed boobies, Galapagos penguins, for example–is found nowhere else on the planet.

Because the Galapagos is on the equator, every constellation is clearly visible, and the night sky is thick with stars. Schools of dolphin frolic off the sides of Quasar Expeditions’ luxuriously outfitted 12-passenger yacht, the Grace, which once belonged to its royal namesake, Princess Grace. Sea lions chase schools of jumping fish, and frigates swoop into the sea.

Colorful marine iguana

The company has newly expanded routes into Patagonia and Belize. And in 2025, there will be an addition to their Galapagos fleet. The Conservation, outfitted for 18 guests, will be the first yacht in the Galapagos to operate with a hybrid engine system.

Expectations are high when it comes to the Galapagos, and the sheer beauty of these boats, with their knowledgeable naturalist guides, elegant accommodations, skilled and gracious Ecuadorian operations team, ever-evolving and fascinating itinerary, next-level food and wine, make this a superior experience. But the goal is to aspire higher: “We hope we change our guests' view on nature and on how they can make a difference at home,” says Gangotena. “When this happens, we will have achieved something significant.” Something you will also want to protect and share, for years to come.
