Want to rent or buy a Casita travel trailer for your camping adventures, but not sure if it’s a good option?

Well, you’re in luck!

In this post, I’ll be providing a detailed review of travel trailers by Casita. So, before you head out to purchase a Casita travel trailer , you’ll know all the required details in advance .

In addition, I’ll be briefly discussing some features of travel trailers . I’ve also added some of the general pros and cons. By the time you’re done with this post, you’ll know everything there is to know about travel trailers.

Without wasting any more time, let’s jump right to it.

Casita Travel Trailer Reviews

Casita Enterprises has been known for manufacturing lightweight travel trailers in Rice, Texas, since 1983. The company has two main teams: the dealership and the manufacturers.

In this review, I’ll be discussing the five models . Keep in mind that each model has a Standard version and a Deluxe version. The main variation is that the deluxe model includes a bathroom and shower in place of the extra sleeping space.

Let’s see what each model has to offer.

The Casita Heritage

casita Heritage-Deluxe floor plan

With a dry weight of 1880 lbs, this travel trailer is quite lightweight. You’ll have no issues pulling this trailer with your truck. However, you must check the weight capacity your truck can handle before investing in a travel trailer.

The Patriot may be small, but it does not lack in terms of features. The bath attached to the deluxe model is more or less similar to the one you’ll find in a larger Casita model.

It might not be super luxurious , but if you’re looking for a comfortable and cozy trailer for a weekend trip, this model is perfect. The ample seating space, comfortable setting, and interior ensure that your trip goes on without a hitch.

Model Specifications

  • Overall Width: 6 feet 8 inches
  • Total Length: 13 feet
  • Aggregate Height: 7 feet 8 inches
  • Interior Height: 5 feet 10 inches
  • Dry Weight: 1880 lbs
  • Size of Tires: 15 inches
  • Maximum Capacity: 2-3 people

The Casita Spirit

Next up is the Casita Spirit, which comes in two sizes: 16 feet and 17 feet. Both sizes are available in both standard and deluxe versions. As I mentioned earlier, the deluxe model includes a bathroom and shower.

casita-Spirit-Standard floor plan

On the other hand, the standard model provides sleeping space for six people. So, if you intend to travel with a larger group, this model might be a good option.

The Spirit is definitely an upgrade from the model we mentioned earlier. Not only is it well-built and cozy, but it also provides you with an alternate floor plan.

Moreover, if you’re looking for a model with its own bathroom and shower that isn’t too large, Casita Spirit is a better choice. You’ll be able to enjoy small family trips with the added benefit of your own toilet.

Model Specifications (16 foot)

  • Total Width: 6 feet 8 inches
  • Overall Length: 16 feet
  • Total Height: 7 feet 8 inches
  • Dry Weight: 1970 lbs (Standard)  2185 (Deluxe)
  • Maximum Capacity: 2-6 people

Model Specifications (17 foot)

  • Overall Length: 17 feet
  • Overall Height: 8 feet 11 inches
  • Interior Height: 6 feet 1 ½ inch
  • Dry Weight: 2210 lbs (Standard)  2489 lbs (Deluxe)

The Casita Freedom

Like the models mentioned earlier, Casita Freedom is also available in both standard and deluxe versions. Similarly, the double bed on this camper can also be converted into a dinette.

casita-Freedom-Deluxe floor plan

In comparison to the earlier models, this camper is definitely more luxurious. The interior of Casita Freedom includes plush chairs and a wide window. The deluxe model also includes a shower and a toilet.

The standard model can accommodate up to four people, while the deluxe model can fit around two people.

  • Total Length: 16 feet
  • Total Exterior Height: 7 feet 8 inches
  • Interior Height: 5 feet 10 inches
  • Maximum Capacity: 1-4 people
  • Total Length: 17 feet
  • Exterior Height: 8 feet 11 inches

La Casita Liberty

La Casita Liberty is a little different from the models mentioned earlier. The uniqueness of this model lies in the fact that it has two dining areas. In addition, in the deluxe version, this area can easily be transformed into a sleeping space with a double bed and two smaller beds or a king-sized bed.

casita-liberty-deluxe floor plan

This model’s floor plan offers more space and versatility to users compared to the earlier models. The standard model can accommodate around four people in the sleeping space.

On the other hand, the deluxe model can house two people in the sleeping space. And it also comes with the added benefit of a bath and a toilet.

This model is perfect for couples looking to enjoy a small getaway retreat.

  • Trailer Width: 6 feet 8 inches
  • Overall Height: 7 feet 8 inches
  • Total Exterior Height: 8 feet 11 inches

La Casita Independence

Casita Independence, the last model in this list, is only available with an overall length of 17 feet, available in both standard and deluxe models. The latter of which comes with a bathroom and shower.

casita-Independence-Deluxe floor plan

Moreover, this layout gives you extra storage underneath the bed. With Independence, you don’t have to worry about not having enough space for your camping equipment.

Similar to the previous model, Independence has three large windows that not only allow ventilation but also allow you to enjoy the scenic view as you travel in your camper.

This model can accommodate around two to six people.

  • Dry Weight: 2210 lbs (Deluxe)

Other Casita Trailer Features

In addition to the specific features, there are some general features that most Casita models include. The list of standard features for Casita trailers is quite long. It includes features such as:

casita-covered-in-Snow

  • Electric brakes
  • 2-piece custom marine-grade fiberglass body
  • Welded stabilizer jacks
  • LP tank cover with city water connection
  • Two 20 lbs gas bottles
  • 110-volt power outlet

Besides, depending on the model, you’ll have other options to select for your Casita model. Most models come with in-built fresh and grey water tanks; however, depending on your usage, you can purchase larger storage tanks as well.

Furthermore, your appliances such as the following are already included, so you don’t have to worry about purchasing them:

  • Two-Burner Stove
  • Power Range Hood (Light Included)
  • Silverware Drawer

Important Thing to Remember Before Getting a Travel Trailer

Whether it is your first experience with a travel trailer or not, here are a few important things to keep in mind:

Towing Your Trailer

Older trailer models can be attached to the bumper of your truck with ease. However, most of the newer models require a hitch connected underneath the frame to attach your trailer to your truck.

As newer models weigh more, I recommend using a weight-distribution hitch to ensure safety.

It is crucial to keep in mind the weight capacity of your truck before investing in a trailer. There’s no point investing in a trailer whose weight your truck will not be handle. Not only is this extremely dangerous, but it’s also damages both your truck and trailer.

Generally, small SUVs or front-wheel-drive cars can handle a weight capacity of around 1500 lbs, a mid-size all-wheel SUV or pickup can handle a 3000 lbs trailer, and a full-size SUV or half-ton pickup truck can tow a 5000 lbs truck.

However, I suggest you dig deeper to figure out your specific vehicle’s weight capacity just to be on the safe side.

Various Types of Travel Trailers

If you search for ‘travel trailers,’ you’ll find a variety of models pop up on your browser. It’s important to look into what each type offers and select one according to your requirements.

Some of the different types include:

  • Teardrop camper
  • Popup camper
  • Hybrid travel trailer
  • Toy hauler trailer
  • Fifth wheel trailer

Construction

Another thing to keep an eye out for is the construction of the trailer. Depending on the model you select, travel trailers can have a single or dual-axle frame. You’ll usually find the sidings made of fiberglass panels, corrugated sheet metal, or aluminum.

Moreover, fiberglass or foam sheets are used for insulation .

Generally, fiberglass is a good option as it is quite durable and doesn’t allow leaks. However, fiberglass might add a few extra dollars to the overall cost of your trailer.

As you’ll be living inside your trailer for your travels, it’s important to look into the floor plan. You don’t want a trailer that’s too cramped or doesn’t provide enough storage space.

casita-Interior

Besides, you also have the option of making upgrades to the camper as well. You can also choose to buy additional appliances such as refrigerators, heaters, microwaves, etc. according to your needs.

Pros and Cons of Travel Trailers

To make this even easier for you, I’ve highlighted some of the travel trailers’ general pros and cons. Be sure to read through these before you make your final decision:

  • A variety of models are available
  • Wide range of prices
  • More affordable option than motorhomes
  • An SUV can tow smaller trailers
  • Longer travel trailers are a bit difficult to maneuver
  • Depending on the weight, you may require a heavy-duty truck to tow your trailer

Casita Enterprises, Inc. has been a pioneer in the industry for nearly four decades, producing the most popular lightweight travel trailers in America. The company’s dedication to employing premium components and craftsmanship has made its trailers stand out, and the allure is further enhanced by its stellar customer satisfaction record.

Being a family-run company, Casita is proud of the degree of comfort its trailers offer and looks forward to working with clients to help them make memories while they explore the country in their very own Casita trailer.

Casita is a good option to consider if you intend to travel with a small group of people. Moreover, the company manufactures well-built and easy-to-tow trailers . I suggest you ask yourself your requirements before you decide to settle on a model.

For instance, the Spirit model embodies a unique blend of comfort and sophistication. It is compact yet spacious enough to accommodate a small family on their travel adventures.

The Independence model, as per the Casita, is known for its durability and functionality. It is ideal for those who prefer to travel independently and require a trailer that can withstand long journeys. On the other hand, the Liberty model is perfect for those who value flexibility and versatility in their travel trailers. It offers various layout options to cater to different preferences.

The Heritage model reflects the remarkable legacy of Casita Travel Trailers, combining time-tested design elements with modern amenities for a comfortable travel experience. Lastly, the Freedom model stands out due to its lightweight design and user-friendly features. It allows travelers to explore the outdoors without feeling weighed down by their trailers. In conclusion, each model from Casita Travel Trailers is meticulously crafted to ensure a memorable and hassle-free travel experience for users.

Make the best decision for yourself, and you can enjoy hassle-free traveling with your loved ones.

This Youtuber Travels In A 13-Foot Casita Trailer

Published on December 29th, 2017 by Christina Nellemann

Fans of classic fiberglass trailers are most likely familiar with Bex Cat-herder . This well-traveled woman has a popular series of YouTube videos documenting her adventures in a 13-foot 1985 Casita Patriot trailer.

From 2017’s total solar eclipse and  Overland Expo West  to a simple way to make coffee in a tiny kitchen, Bex shows that you don’t need a large RV to really enjoy life on the road. She was kind to answer a few questions for Do It Yourself RV on life in an egg camper.

Thank you for subscribing to the Do It Yourself RV newsletter, keep your eye on your inbox for updates.

I have a 1985 Casita Patriot trailer. It is 13 feet tip to tip and weighs about 1,100 pounds (empty). The actual living area is a smidge under 10 feet with 5’10” of headroom inside. I am 6′ tall so I have to stoop just a little inside but it has all of the necessities: a comfortable bed, small kitchen with a two burner stove, sink, refrigerator, and a bathroom. In addition, I have installed a C-Head composting toilet so I can “boondock” for a few weeks at a time.

bexcatherder-casita-fire

Do you work from the road? If so, what do you do?

I am not currently working. I am a software engineer from Silicon Valley and left my previous company after it was acquired and have been living off savings. I had originally planned on traveling for just four to six months and then returning to work. However, I am enjoying this part of my life so tremendously, I have found it difficult to go back to my old life. It’s now been over two years! I tell people, “I’m on month 28 of a 6 month trip.” It has become a dream of mine to be able to work on the road. Unfortunately, I will probably have to go back to work sometime early next year and stop traveling for a while and save up another nest egg. I’m actually dreading going back to my old life.   🙁

Why did you decide on a small fiberglass camper? How do they appeal to you?

I had been lusting after a teardrop trailer for several years and had hoped to get one for weekend camping trips. It seemed to be the only thing I would be able to tow with my little Honda CRV. When I finally got serious after losing my job, it became apparent that I would be spending more than weekends in my camper. I found out that these older fiberglass campers are light enough to tow with my current vehicle, have a bathroom, and enough headroom that I would be able to stand to put on my pants. I was sold! I was lucky and found one just a few hours from me. Another thing I really love about fiberglass is their durability and lack of seams that could leak. They are amazingly durable.

Casita

You just won $30,000. What other camper would you buy?

I’m totally in love with fiberglass trailers . While there are several excellent brands to choose from, I would love to have a 17-foot Casita with a high lift axle so I could still get to all of the places I want to go. Casitas are very versatile and customizable and the larger trailer has over six feet of headroom so I would be able to stand up straight. If I am ever able to work on the road, a 17-footer would also allow me to have a comfortable place to work and still have a permanent bed. Right now, I have to sit on my bed when I am editing videos and that gets uncomfortable after three or four hours. However, if I ever upgrade my camper, I would also need to upgrade my vehicle to a small pickup in order to tow a bigger camper.

Casita

What items do you find to be the most useful on the road?

1. Solar panel This one item has probably changed my nomadic life more than any other. I have a Renogy 100-watt portable solar panel . This keeps my house battery charged which in turn keeps all my camera and electronics batteries charged. 2. Coffee making stuff I am not a morning person and coffee makes many mornings happen. I have two methods of making coffee . My favorite is good ol’ fashioned cowgirl coffee. I make coffee in a pan and then filter the grounds out with a Primula Coffee Brew Buddy . I also have a filter for pour over coffee. 3. My smartphone Perhaps this should be first?! A modern smartphone with a maps app is really clutch. Most often, I am going somewhere I’ve never been before and having turn by turn directions often makes the difference between going somewhere or not. The app I probably use most often is Allstays . However, there are a couple of websites for free camping I visit often. 4. Little Bluetooth JBL speaker for listening to podcasts I love listening to podcasts in the morning almost as much as having coffee. My favorite podcast is The Truth from Radiotopia , but just about all of the Radiotopia podcasts are worth a listen. I recently discovered Alan Watts and that has really changed my outlook on many things.

casita

Where are your favorite places to travel? What’s on your bucket list?

Originally my plan was to visit all of the national parks. However, as I began my travels, I kept coming upon wonderful and amazing places. It seems that for every place I crossed off my list, I added two more. I haven’t yet made it past the left coast. I am hoping to make it to Utah in the next year. I would also love to spend a few months in Alaska and travel across Canada and go south through the Baja Peninsula . I’m sure I could travel across North America for the rest of my life and still have a long list of places I want to see.

You can see all of Bex Cat-herder’s videos on her Youtube channel here .

How Much Does a Casita Travel Trailer Weigh?

Casita Travel Trailer

Much like the Scamp trailer, one of the biggest advantages of the Casita trailer is how light they are.

But just how much does a Casita travel trailer weigh ?

Casita travel trailers have a dry weight between 1,970 and 2,480 pounds depending on the length and model of the trailer.  But a fully loaded Casita will usually have a weight between 2,500 and 3,500 pounds when filled with gear.

If you’re curious about how much a specific Casita trailer weighs though, keep reading, as we provide the weight of every Casita trailer currently in production.

There are five main models of the Casita travel trailer including the Spirit , the Independence , the Heritage , the Freedom , and the Liberty .

With each model having both a standard and deluxe version and some models having either a 16-foot or 17-foot version.

Casita Spirit

Casita independence, casita heritage, casita freedom, casita liberty, what affects the weight of a casita travel trailer.

While casita makes 5 different models of their trailer including the Spirit, the Independence, the Heritage, the Freedom, and the Liberty, the model of the trailer really doesn’t have that much of an impact on the weight of the trailer.

However, there are three factors that do impact the overall weight of a Casita trailer, which include the length of the trailer, whether or not the trailer is a standard or deluxe version, and how the trailer is optioned .

Casita Trailer Length

Casita currently makes two different lengths of their trailer, including a 16-foot length and a 17-foot length.

The 16-foot Casita trailer has a dry weight between 1,970 and 2,185 pounds, while the 17-foot Casita trailer has a dry weight between 2,210 and 2,480 pounds.

This means that on average the 17-foot Casita trailer will weigh 268 more pounds compared to the 16-foot Casita.

Standard or Deluxe Version

There is also two main versions of each model of the Casita, which includes the standard and deluxe version.

The standard version of the Casita has a dry weight between 1,970 and 2,210 pounds, while the deluxe version of the Casita has a dry weight between 2,185 and 2,480 pounds.

This means on average that the deluxe version of the Casita trailer will weigh 242 pounds more compared to the standard version of the Casita.

Casita Trailer Options

And the final factor that can have an impact on the weight of a Casita trailer is how the camper is optioned.

As available options such as a weight-distribution hitch, electric tongue jack, and awning can have a big impact on the overall weight of the camper.

Casita Trailer

How Much Does a Casita 13 Weigh?

The 13-foot Casita travel trailer has a dry weight of 1,785 pounds, however, this does not account for propane, water, and cargo you might load inside the trailer.

As a fully-loaded 13-foot Casita travel trailer will generally weigh between 2,000 and 2,300 pounds, depending on the amount of cargo loaded into the trailer.

So if you’re trying to decide if you can tow a 13-foot Casita trailer with your current vehicle.

Make sure you use the fully-loaded weight of the Casita trailer when deciding, as this is a much better representation of the true weight of the trailer.

Also, remember that you never want to max out your tow vehicle and always want to leave a little cushion.

Does Casita Make a 13 Foot Trailer?

It might seem a bit odd to ask the question of whether or not Casita makes a 13-foot trailer, right after we just told you the weight of one but it’s worth asking because the answer might surprise you.

Casita used to make a 13-foot version of the Casita trailer called the Patriot.  However, in 2017, Casita discontinued the 13-foot Casita trailer.

So if want to buy a 13-foot trailer, you will either need to buy a used 13-foot Casita or buy a Scamp 13  trailer as Scamp still makes a new 13-foot trailer.

How Much Does a 17 Foot Casita Travel Trailer Weigh?

The 17-foot Casita travel trailer has a dry weight of between 2,210 and 2,480 pounds, depending on whether it’s the standard or deluxe version.

But as with all travel trailers, the dry weight is not the best representation of the true weight of the trailer, if you’re trying to determine if your vehicle can tow a particular trailer.

As the fully-loaded trailer weight is a much better indicator of true weight.

And because of this, you really want to pay attention to the fully loaded weight of the 17-foot Casita trailer, which usually ranges from 3,000 to 3,500 pounds once fully-loaded with cargo.

Casita Trailer Interior

Casita Trailer Weight Compared to Other Small Campers

One of the best ways to get a true sense of what a trailer weighs is to compare it to the weight of other similar-sized trailers.

So we found several other travel trailers of similar size and length compared to the Casita travel trailer and listed them below for comparison.

What Does a Casita Trailer Cost?

The standard Casita trailer starts at $23,996 and the deluxe Casita starts at $25,694.

However, there are many options that can be added to both the standard as well as the deluxe version of the Casita that can cause the price of the trailer to go up.

Most popular options and add-ons for the Casita travel trailer.

  • Roller Shades
  • Electric Tongue Jack
  • Casita Trailer Cover
  • AGM Deep Cycle Battery
  • Video Entertainment Package
  • Anderson Weight Distribution Hitch

 How Tall are Casita Trailers?

Casita travel trailers have an exterior height of 8 feet 11 inches and an overall width of 6 feet 8 inches, which makes them super easy to tow and manage as well as see down the side of the trailer while traveling.

Ensuring that even the most novice of RV drivers will be comfortable towing a compact Casita trailer.

But despite its small compact size, there is still plenty of room to move around inside the trailer thanks to its 6-foot 2-inch interior ceiling height and curved design which helps to maximize the interior space of the trailer.

How Long is a Casita?

Casita travel trailers are either 13, 16, or 17 feet long.

Making the Casita one of the shortest and most compact campers currently on the road today.

However, if you want a new Casita trailer you will have to choose between either the 16 or 17-foot length, as Casita discontinued their 13-foot model in 2017.

Can a Subura Outback Tow a Casita?

The Subura Outback has a max tow capacity of between 2,700 and 3,500 pounds depending on the version and how it’s equipped.

While a fully loaded Casita travel trailer will weigh between 2,5000 and 3,500 pounds depending on the length and version of the trailer.

This means that it might be possible to tow a Casita trailer with a Subura Outback if you have an Outback on the high end of the max tow capacity and a Casita trailer on the low-end of the weight range.

Just remember that you never want to max out your vehicle’s towing capacity.

And that a good rule of thumb to keep in mind when towing is the “80 rule”, which states that you never want to tow more than 80% of your vehicle’s max tow capacity to help avoid premature damage to your tow vehicle and to give yourself some cushion.

So if you own a Subura Outback that has a max tow capacity of 3,500 pounds, you ideally shouldn’t pull a trailer heavier than 2,800 pounds.

Popular Vehicles that Can Tow a Casita Trailer
