So many people love to travel these days that they even do it full time. But traveling used to be a lot less common. It was harder, it took longer, and it was a lot more expensive.

If you were to travel back in time (see what I did there?), you’d see a fantastic evolution of the suitcase. These days, we’re constantly reinventing the suitcase, but before the turn of the century, people used trunks. (No, guys, this has nothing to do with elephants, don’t worry!)

Today, we would think of a trunk as a permanent fixture—something to hold blankets in the corner and look pretty. But back then, they were highly functional. It was what you took on your journey because they were often long and arduous. You needed to bring more with you than you would right now.

The fascinating thing about luggage is that it seems to follow the history of human movement. It symbolizes every revolution in transportation since the steamship, and it’s an important piece of our heritage.

Trunk Construction

In the 19th century, suitcases, as we know them, didn’t exist. To travel properly, you needed a trunk made of wood and leather, supported by a heavy iron base. Only the best trunks used tree sap or canvas to waterproof them from the most popular mode of travel at the time – the steamship.

Without waterproofing, your trunk would be soaked in a matter of minutes. If it weren’t heavy or durable enough, it would be crushed by other, heavier trunks in a number of hours or days. You’d never make it to your destination with all of your belongings intact.

However, trunks were also useful as the railroad began to expand westward in the United States, and they were often used for this mode of travel as well.

You may often hear trunks referred to as steamer trunks, which is a name given to them because they were so commonly used for steamship travel. However, travel trunks, or simply trunks, are acceptable, too.

But I’m curious to learn about the different trunk styles, so let us have a look:

Trunk Styles

Aside from being as durable as possible, there were many different styles. What you owned was very indicative of your place in society. Plain or ornate, flat or domed lid, simply hardware or plenty of embellishments, people could easily tell whether you were poor or wealthy.

So let us take a closer look at the different trunk styles:

Flat top trunks

artist travel trunk

Flat top travel trunks were much more affordable than anything else, but they were practical, too. They could be easily stacked in the cargo area, where lower or middle-class travelers would leave their things.

There was much less room on a ship than there would be in first class, so these were not only accessible to those who couldn’t afford something nicer, but they were necessary if you planned to travel on a ship.

There’s no flair here, only the basic construction of the trunk. They may or may not have been waterproof, but you lived within your means, even if it meant you didn’t have the best. Today, we might think of one of these as very beautiful, but they were the most basic form of trunk you could get.

As a general rule, flat-top trunks are priced much lower than their Dome Top trunks brothers and sisters. There are some cases that are an exception, but then the case has to be incredibly special!

If the flat top trunks are something that you would like to add to your home, you can check out Etsy.

But I have to warn you that these prices are going to be on the pricier side. If you don’t want to spend a fortune on these antique items, you could always check out auctions. They can go as little as $1.

Prices will, however, depend on your location. But keep the following in mind. These trunks are quite big, and not everyone has a lot of space in their homes to dedicate to vintage trunks. Because of this, the demand is low, and so are the prices. So you might be surprised with what you can find.

Dome top trunks

But let’s be honest, who needs practicality when you can afford this?

These trunks had the most flair, with dramatic lids and ornate hardware. They were waterproofed, stained, and polished to look shiny and new. When you weren’t traveling, you would use your trunk for decoration in the home, to show it off.

These were very expensive, so they were only used by the very wealthy. Often, they were purchased for a bride on her wedding day and given as a gift. They were also used to store valuable items or heirlooms.

The inside of these trunks was also more elaborate and accommodating than a flat top trunk. They included smaller compartments for handkerchiefs and trays for jewelry. Some also had additional features like wheels.

These trunks have high curved tops, with a height of 25 to 30 inches. They date back to 1870 to the early 1900s. And there are still a few shops manufacturing them to this day. Not only are they the most common form of antique trunks, but they are also the most popular.

Bevel top trunks

artist travel trunk

Image by Damian Gadal via Flickr

This type of trunk is just like it sounds. Whether it was domed or flat, it had ornate beveling on the top and perhaps on the sides. Flat designs are still practical while displaying a little bit of style.

These were used by middle-class passengers because they could afford just a tad extra.

Monitor top trunks

artist travel trunk

These trunks were flat on the top, but they had rounded edges. They could be plain or ornate in design, depending on who was buying them. The hardware also varied from basic to decorative.

These shapes were more exciting than the plain flat top trunk but still practical for traveling.

Personally, this is my favorite so far because it reminds me of a treasure chest. I would definitely love to have one of these in my home!

Wall Trunks:

Although these trunks look very similar to the rest of the trunks, there is something different about them, their hinge mechanism, and the way the trunks open and close. These trunks were ideal for small spaces because you could push them against the wall, and you could open the lid without having to save a lot of space for the top part to be opened.

These Saratoga trunks were named after Saratoga, NY, a very popular vacation spot for the wealthy in the 1800s. These trunks were definitely one of the fancier options and had a rounded top.

Jenny Lind:

This antique trunk became popular in the 1850s, and 60’s when the famous Swedish singer Jenny Lind toured the US for two years.

Steamer Trunk:

These steamer trunks were mostly flat tops and were designed for traveling purposes and to fit in small spaces. They were square-shaped or dome-shaped and were used to put clothes and personal belongings in when people traveled.

Due to luggage regulations, steamer trunks were usually not more than 14 inches tall. What makes the situation unfortunate is that if you weren’t wealthy, you could only take one or two sets of clothes with you and anything else that could fit into this small steamer trunk.

It has been a struggle for collectors to identify steamer trunks because the trunk manufacturers either marked the trunk with a paper label that did not last very long, or they just didn’t mark the steamer trunks at all.

This makes it difficult to see what vintage steamer trunk you have.

Buying an antique steamer trunk

So I have convinced you to purchase an antique steamer trunk, but where do you purchase them?

Here is a list of places you can buy antique steamer trunks:

  • Antique malls

Your Antique Steamer trunk value

You will be able to find an antique steamer trunk at any of these places mentioned above for under $100. But whether they are valuable will depend on the condition it is in.

The Actual Suitcase

artist travel trunk

Suitcases eventually caught on by the end of the 1800s. But the name comes from its literal purpose, which was to carry suits. Did you know this?

These suitcases contained inner sleeves for shirts, and some even had a hatbox on the side.

However, even after the popularity of the suitcase increased, it wasn’t the only baggage style available. Trunks were still more popular for traveling long distances because they could hold more things and were much more durable.

This is when club bags and portable wardrobes also gained in popularity. A club bag was an early form of a duffel bag with soft sides and a zipper closure. They were more practical and much less heavy than a trunk.

As men began to travel farther distances for work or families intended to travel by car rather than steamship or railroad, they wanted something that was easier to bring along their journey, and these suitcases fit this description.

The Evolution

Bringing us back to today, the evolution of luggage came from necessity. While it used to be that baggage was handled by porters, bustling terminals have made this baggage handling much more difficult.

Long handles, wheels, and security features were developed from the increasing popularity and ease of travel. Given the size of most modern airports, you wouldn’t want to be stuck dragging something as large or heavy as a trunk.

Traveling trunks may only be useful as accessories now, but they hold even more allure than they did when they were new. Vintage travel trunks are highly collectible and are amazingly functional pieces of furniture.

The purpose of vintage trunks today

Okay, well, I’m sure you are not going to use the vintage trunks to travel because they will definitely not fit the airport guidelines. And you will be tired before you even reach your destination.

But there are many other options that you can use these vintage trunks for today. So, let me tell you all about them, and maybe you can incorporate some of these ideas in your home too!

artist travel trunk

Coffee and console tables

Trust me; it looks stunning! It is perfect as a coffee table because it looks chique and will definitely steal the show when you have people over! But what if it doesn’t fit my interior? You can always paint it or add some extra detail to it.

Bedside tables or footboard benches

Now we are talking! Turn these gorgeous vintage trunks into your stylish bedside table and add some chic bedside lamps to match the aesthetic. You can also use it as a footboard bench for your bed. Not only can you use it for the aesthetic, but you can store some items in it too; maybe your shoes have found a new home.

Okay, maybe this is one you didn’t even think about, but you are going to now. You can decorate and design it as you please and maybe even add some legs or layer it with other trunks. You then have the option of either having the bottles on the top of the trunk or placing them inside of it.

A place for storing your comfy blankets

I don’t know about you guys, but being snuggled up in my soft, comfy blanket while watching a movie is the best feeling in the world. And displaying my blankets in these vintage trunks is not only convenient, but it gives my home a cozy vintage look and feel.

Okay, so the antique trunks that were once used for traveling are now being used as furniture in your home, but have you ever wondered whether those trunks are the real deal? And how can you determine it?

Well, I want to share with you how you can determine if your trunk is antique and the things you need to pay attention to. So let us dive right in.

  • For the trunk to be considered as antique, it needs to be over 100 years old, and it cannot have been restored because this affects the value of the trunk.
  • When you are buying online and not in person, make sure that the seller of the trunk has photos that include the smaller details of the trunk, for example, the lining, the hardware, and the locks.
  • Make sure there are no holes or missing pieces because this makes the trunk lose its value
  • Pay attention to detail; the more expensive trunks will have features like leather and brass
  • Make sure you always do your research

Some interesting facts:

Did you know that your favorite brand also made trunks and still does to this day? Jip, I’m talking about Louis Vuitton. In 1858 the first Louis Vuitton trunk was introduced that featured a gray Trianon canvas. And in 1872, the gray canvas was replaced with a striped canvas.

Making the Louis Vuitton trunks is a lengthy process, actually an extremely lengthy process with 150 hours per trunk.

I hope you guys enjoyed this guide to vintage traveling trunks and ways you can make your home more vintagey. Do you own a vintage trunk, or would you like to own one in the near future? If you like the vintage trunks as much as I do, you can check out these antique trunks mentioned above on Etsy or even attend an auction. And let us know which trunk is your favorite. Travel + Leisure / Joy Kim

Before modern suitcases were invented, travel trunks (also called steamer trunks) were the luggage of choice for long-haul trips . Their sturdy construction and excellent storage capacity made them the go-to for transporting clothing, footwear, and even household items. These features have kept them relevant today, and brands have added plenty of upgrades like lightweight construction, wider size ranges, spinner wheels, multiple handles, and built-in organization. Travelers now also have many more options when it comes to the design and size of these pieces.

We carefully tested 508 carry-on and checked bags in our lab and on an airplane set we built for testing, looking for the best in style, comfort, value, design, and functionality. For this article, we handpicked the best trunks out of our testing insights to feature ones that stood out for their high-quality construction, excellent maneuverability, strong durability and expectation-exceeding storage capacity. Whether you're headed for a quick weekend getaway or a bucket-list trip of a lifetime, these travel trunks are best in class.

After recent rounds of luggage testing, we updated this article with four new trunks from Briggs & Riley, Calpak, Carl Friedrik, and Herschel. We also created an Others We Liked section with our runners-up from Delsey and Monos. We have plans to test two new trunk that recently launched — the Paravel Aviator Trunk and the Delsey X Jeep Large Expandable Spinner Trunk — soon and will update this article with our results.

Best Overall

Away the trunk.

This sleek trunk rolls so smoothly and is easy to maneuver around tight corners, crowds, and over rough surfaces.

Make sure to pack your items evenly to distribute the weight, otherwise it may feel heavier on one side.

This trunk from Away truly stood out among all the trunks we’ve tested, and we especially noticed its durability and how easy it is to maneuver on either two or four wheels. We put it to the test, racing it around sharp turns, obstacle courses full of bystanders, and over rough surfaces, and we loved how it glided through all scenarios without ever getting stuck or feeling heavy. Even though it's a large trunk with a 107-liter capacity, it still managed to feel lightweight and didn’t put any strain on us while pulling or pushing it. The trunk also has compression straps and zippered mesh pockets inside to help you make the most of your space. We recommend making sure you distribute your belongings as evenly as you can in the 70/30 design to best distribute the weight so that it doesn’t feel uneven or lopsided.

Out of all the Away luggage we’ve tested , this was one of the most durable pieces, standing up well to our table drops with barely any scratches. The outer shell has a lot of give, and when we hit it with a metal baseball bat, the bat actually bounced right back up without leaving any dents. It also has an easy-grip top handle, side handle, and underside grab handle that makes it easy to pull out of a car trunk or off a baggage carousel.

July Trunk Set

This set is sleek and stylish with twin latch locks and an extremely durable shell.

These trunks are some of the heavier options on this list for their size.

What’s even better than one trunk? A set of trunks. The July Trunk Set will give you two stylish pieces of luggage in both carry-on and checked sizes, both with 80/20 lid-opening designs. These matching trunks close with TSA latch locks instead of zippers for added security, and the locks proved to be durable even when we gave them some direct hits during our baseball bat test. We tested the glossy version of the trunks — which are also available in matte styles — and they impressed us with how strong they were, surviving our drop tests with only a few small scuff marks. We imagine these trunks could last a very long time even with heavy usage since the materials seemed to hold up well to rough handling. One of our favorite features of both trunks is that the handles can adjust to 20 different heights, which is helpful to wheel and navigate them both no matter how tall or short you are.

The Details: 8.4 pounds for carry-on; 13.2 pounds for checked | 21.7 x 15 x 8.7 inches for carry-on; 28.25 x 16.5 x 14.5 inches for checked | 42-liter capacity for carry-on; 95-liter capacity for checked | Polycarbonate | 4 dual spinner wheels

Delsey Paris Cruise 3.0 26-inch Trunk

It’s very spacious and offers excellent value for the price.

Taller travelers might find the telescopic handle too short.

Delsey's Cruise 3.0 trunk truly stood out as one of the best checked trunk options on the market. It passed our durability tests with flying colors, with the polycarbonate shell and spinner wheels not showing any signs of wear and tear, which is exactly what you'd want from your checked suitcase (after all, airport handlers are not exactly known for their gentle handling of luggage). We were also impressed with how easy it was to maneuver it — even when fully packed — along various surfaces and quickly change directions with no drag so, whether you're heading to the airport or rolling it along a historic street in Europe, this is a solid choice.  Speaking of its capacity, this Delsey trunk should definitely be at the top of your list for winter or cold-weather trips . We packed a long list of items, plus a very bulky puffer jacket with the help of its compression straps, and had no issues closing it. And, while it has a rather simple internal organization, you can invest in a good set of packing cubes if you'd like to have more control over how your belongings are organized.

Another feature that we found extremely helpful is the built-in weight indicator, which turns red as soon as the trunk becomes too heavy (goodbye, overweight luggage fees!). Naturally, as expected from this reliable, stylish brand , you can also expect beautiful design and sturdy construction that will last for years to come.

The Details: Checked suitcase | 9.5 pounds | 29.5 x 16.5 x 14 inches | 90-liter capacity | Polycarbonate | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best Checked

Travelpro x travel + leisure large check-in trunk spinner.

This spacious trunk has a 97-liter capacity and a split-case construction to divide the weight evenly.

If you pack this trunk full, you can expect to pay overweight baggage fees.

"This isn't a bag, it's an apartment," says Travel + Leisure editor Taylor Fox , who tested this suitcase in our lab. The inside of this trunk is incredibly spacious, and rather than a 70/30 or 80/20 construction that most trunks have, this one splits evenly to distribute the weight so that it doesn't feel lopsided. Plus, it's expandable if you do find that you need even more space. We found it helpful that both sides of the clamshell zip closed to keep all of your items contained. There are also several pockets with zippers to stash smaller items and to prevent them from getting lost in the void.

This trunk is best suited for a long trip (or even a moving day) when you need ample space, but you can expect to pay overweight baggage fees if you pack it full because of the sheer size. Despite the size and weight, we found it shockingly easy to maneuver over different surfaces and through our obstacle course. Though the handle has three height adjustments, we thought the suitcase itself was tall, so shorter travelers may find the height a bit awkward. The price is an investment, but we think this high-quality piece will last a lifetime.

Most Stylish

Delsey paris chatelet air 2.0 26-inch trunk.

Its shape and design make it the perfect option to transport bulky items.

We wish the telescopic handle went higher.

You'll surely make a statement in any old airport with this stylish Delsey trunk, available in sophisticated shades of beige and tan. After using this trunk for over three months, we especially love its size and shape, which is big enough to fit a ton of items for even a two-week long trip, but it isn't as bulky as a traditional checked suitcase . This trunk is designed with one side much deeper than the other, making it perfect for transporting ski equipment (like ski boots or a helmet, for example). Additionally, we packed a long list of items and still had plenty of room left over. We also appreciated the zippered pockets on the two divider flaps that you could keep smaller items in. This is a very packing-cube-friendly trunk as you could easily stack them on top of each other in the deeper compartment.

Once you check it in at the airport, you can rest assured that your items will arrive at your destination safe and sound, thanks to the durable and tough polycarbonate construction that, together with the four double spinner wheels, held up remarkably well after several hits and drops, even in the creamy color. We do wish the handle was taller, but it wasn't a deal breaker.

Best for Long Trips

Briggs & riley extra large trunk spinner.

Despite its hefty size, it only weighs 10 pounds when empty and feels light even when packed.

The trunk got dented during our baseball bat tents.

If you need as much space as you can get for long trips or multiple family members sharing one bag, thisis the largest of all the trunks on this list. “This bag is an absolute monster,” says T+L editor Sophie Mendel , who tested this suitcase in our lab. “The bag is enormous, though the weight of the empty bag is less than I would expect for something this large at just 10 pounds (less than other suitcases I own).”

Thanks to its 80/20 design, deep compartments, and compression panels, you could really stuff it full, even with bulkier or oddly shaped objects. What really impressed us was that even with its clunky size and massive storage potential, it was a breeze to maneuver the trunk in every direction and on multiple terrains without getting stuck. Also, unlike many other trunks, this one has a handle that you can raise to multiple heights, and we found it easy to transition between them without the handle getting stuck. While the hardware seemed durable, the polycarbonate shell dented easily when we hit it with a baseball bat, so you can expect the outside to get beat up during transit.

The Details: Checked suitcase | 10.4 pounds | 32.5 x 16.5 x 15.5 inches | 123.9-liter capacity | Makrolon polycarbonate | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best Expandable

Calpak hue trunk luggage.

The expander feature gives you more packing space if you need it, and the plentiful pockets will keep you organized.

The handle only has a single height setting.

While most trunks feature latches instead of zippers, this sturdy Calpak suitcase is one of the few trunks we’ve ever tested that has an expandable zipper (the Travelpro option on this list is another one), giving you an additional two inches of extra storage space if you need more room — especially helpful if you plan to fly back with more items than you left with. During testing, we also noticed how lightweight this tall trunk felt and how incredibly easy it was to maneuver on both two wheels or all four without ever feeling lopsided, though we wish the handle had multiple height settings.

In terms of interior organization, it has a pretty classic layout with a zippable mesh panel on one side and compression straps on the other, and there are luggage feet on the outside to direct you which way to open the trunk so that the contents don’t come spilling out. We found the two long, mesh pockets on the zippable panel to be really useful for shoes — we were able to easily fit two pairs of sneakers or loafers in each, so you can even forgo shoe bags.

Most Durable

Peugeot voyages 26-inch large trunk.

This well-made trunk will protect your belongings like a tank.

The trunk has an aluminum frame, which adds durability but also weight.

French automobile maker Peugeot helped Delsey create this sleek travel trunk, and we could definitely tell it was designed with the security and durability of its contents in mind. Since trunks can be large and deep, organization is key, and we love how this one has two main compartment with compression straps and mesh flaps on top with zippered pockets to keep everything locked in place. In addition to the two large compartments, there are also two zippered mesh pockets and a handy pocket for a Bluetooth tracker (tracker not included).

The four wheels are extremely well-made, and the bag is easy to turn and maneuver. However, because of the sheer weight of the trunk, travelers might find it heavy to lift when fully packed. Another factor to consider is that you'll hit an airline's weight limit quicker if you are not careful with how much you pack inside. Still, the sleek exterior withstood being checked during multiple trips over our three-month long-term testing period and protected all of our items well.

The Details: Checked suitcase | 11.18 pounds | 28 x 16 x 14 inches | 89-liter capacity | Polycarbonate | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best Organization

Carl friedrik trunk.

The trunk has collapsible dividers and comes with packing cubes.

It is on the heavy side and difficult to navigate on four wheels.

This trunk will be an excellent buy for travelers looking for a way to keep their belongings organized during long trips. The trunk has an 80/20 design, leaving you with one very large main compartment to pack and a second one that can still fit plenty of other belongings. To make things more convenient, the trunk has two collapsible dividers inside, enabling you to personalize the interior organizational layout. It also comes with a set of three complimentary packing cubes , which is a thoughtful touch to help keep this hefty trunk in order.

“This was probably the most well-organized piece of luggage I've ever tested,” says T+L updates editor Hillary Maglin . “As I tested it, I kept thinking how well everything would be kept in place through even the roughest travels and baggage handling.”

After we packed the trunk full, we thought it felt significantly lighter to roll and turn up on an angle on two wheels, while it lagged awkwardly on all four. However, we think it would make a great travel companion thanks to its amazingly designed interior.

The Details: Checked suitcase | 13.7 pounds | 15.8 x 28.7 x 14.6 inches | 90-liter capacity | Makrolon polycarbonate | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best Splurge

Steamline luggage the sweetheart carry-on.

The vintage-inspired design makes a stunning two-wheeled carry-on.

Avoid checking this bag at all costs, otherwise it may get damaged.

If you’re looking for a chic suitcase that will garner attention no matter where you are, this posh, vintage-inspired suitcase tops our list. Gold-hued latches open up to reveal a silky, watercolor floral lining and the exterior features gorgeous leather accents. Don't waste your time — and this bag's Instagram potential — by checking it in: style it as part of your travel outfit, especially since the light-colored exterior may not stay pristine on the tarmac.

While this carry-on only has two wheels, we found it easy to maneuver; it does stand upright thanks to the two small legs opposite the wheels, but you need to pull it behind you as you go. Another thing to keep in mind is that while it measures 20 inches, it is pretty small on the inside, so you might find it hard to pack more than a few days’ worth of clothing. However, the classic rectangular trunk shape means you can maximize the internal storage space (as opposed to carry-ons with rounded corners).

The Details: Carry-on | 8.8 pounds | 20 x 14.5 x 6.5 inches | Japanese Pasco fiberboard, leather | 2 wheels

Best Colors

Herschel heritage hardshell large luggage.

This trunk has a streamlined design that makes it easy to travel with, and it also comes in a bunch of appealing colors.

The bottom is likely to get scraped if you roll it over uneven terrain.

If you're looking for a sturdy, no-frills travel trunk, this Herschel option will get the job done. The 50/50 split design means you have equal storage in both compartments, with a zippered mesh panel on one side and compression straps on the other. We appreciate the uncomplicated design, the various interior pockets, and the many colors to choose from — including royal blue, a purplish gray, and a muted rose — that will make this trunk stand out on the baggage belt.

We noticed during our tests that the hardside exterior is not as rigid as some other trunks, making it a little bit flexible if you need to really pack it full and squish a few extra items in there. We also liked how the weight felt evenly distributed and how the wheels were able to make sharp turns easily. Though the trunk didn’t sustain any dents during our durability tests, the bottom of the suitcase scraped easily by simply rolling it from the linoleum floor to concrete pavers, so we imagine that it will get very scuffed, but no one is really looking at the very bottom of your suitcase anyway.

The Details: Checked suitcase | 10.6 pounds | 31.88 x 16.93 x 12.60 inches | 95-liter capacity | Polycarbonate | 4 dual spinner wheels

Other Travel Trunks We Liked

Here are a few more trunks that performed well during testing, though they had some minor setbacks to be wary of.

Delsey Turenne Medium Trunk Spinner : Even though this is a medium-size checked trunk, the interior allows plenty of storage space. However, the wheels were not as smooth as we liked and kept getting stuck on the smooth floor in our lab, which may not bode well if you plan on wheeling it over cobblestones or rougher terrain.

Travel + Leisure / Jessica Juliao

Monos Hybrid Trunk : With a spacious interior and a hardside exterior enforced by aluminum bumpers, this travel trunk is a solid option for longer journeys. But some surfaces seemed challenging for the wheels, and we worried about the latches getting damaged when you check it.

Our team has tested more than 500 suitcases, assessing and gathering insights on a wide range of products. We first verify all bags’ dimensions and weight and then proceed with rigorous tests in our New York City lab and in our real-life travels to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each option, including maneuverability over a wide range of terrain like carpet and gravel. We also carefully inspect all exterior and interior elements, such as wheels, pockets, handles, and zippers, and simulate real travel situations like drops and whacks.

We verify the storage capacity of each trunk by packing it with a set list of clothing, shoes, and toiletries; carry-on bags were assessed for a four-day trip while larger trunks were packed for journeys of a week (or more). In order to make our list, each trunk's features must work properly, including zippers that run without snags and handles that extend and retract smoothly.

We built an airplane set to lift carry-on bags into overhead bins and roll them down aisles. We threw bags of all sizes off tables and hit them with baseball bats to test durability. Finally, we evaluate each bag's overall design and functionality and, only after coming to a conclusion about the strengths and weaknesses do we consider the value based on price. Our tests continue in the real-world for up to six months to make sure the bags can stand up to airports, trains, cars, and everything in between.

Tips for Buying a Travel Trunk

Choose the size and features that fit your needs.

Gone are the days when trunks were a fairly standard, rectangular box. Travelers have plenty of choices nowadays in terms of size, design, and shape. Both carry-on and checked options have features that render them functional for many occasions. The 70/30 or 80/20 design (where one side is bigger than the other) is perfect for transporting large, oddly shaped items. Clamshell trunks have a zipper down the middle, while some have classic latches for extra security. You can also opt for a trunk with a flap top to stack and secure your packing cubes inside. We love the style of vintage-inspired travel trunks, but before purchasing one, make sure they feature modern additions such as wheels, telescopic handles, and carrying handles for easy transportation.

Look for lightweight construction

While most domestic airlines don't have a weight limit on carry-on luggage, you must be mindful of the trunk's weight if you are traveling in Europe. For example, low-cost carriers such as RyanAir or WizzAir will allow for a 10-kilogram or 22-pound bag (versus a more standard 12-kilogram or 26-pound allowance). For checked bags, almost all airlines impose a 50-pound limit for travelers in economy class (business and first-class passengers are often allowed a greater weight allowance on checked bags).

Other than airline weight restrictions, the other reason to choose a lightweight piece is that you will have to haul it around and lift it, whether that’s off of a baggage claim belt or into a car. Heavier trunks are also much more difficult to wheel, especially on unpaved terrain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Travel trunks come in carry-on and checked sizes, so you should pick one based on your needs and preferences. Carry-on trunks often come in 20- and 21-inch lengths (that includes the shell and the wheels), which fully adheres to most airlines' requirements. They typically range in weight from about seven to nine pounds.

Larger trunks vary in dimensions, and most that we've tested range from 26-31 inches tall. However, before you purchase a trunk to check in, consider its weight. Travel trunks tend to be heavier than regular suitcases because of their design and construction, so there’s a higher risk of being charged an overweight fee.

Travel trunks have been popular throughout history because of their design — one side is usually deeper than the other, making them ideal for transporting bulky or oddly shaped items. Trunks are often sturdier and more durable than regular checked luggage, which is also good news for those traveling with fragile and delicate items (like pottery, artwork, and camera or sports equipment).

Keeping your travel trunk clean will significantly extend its life. Vacuum the interior with a handheld vacuum, and then wipe it down with a wet cloth or treat any lining stains with a soapy solution. Some trunks have removable pockets or lining, so you can simply throw those in the washing machine.

Many travel trunks have hard shells made from polycarbonate, so you can use the same cleaning products for standard luggage. Don't forget to disinfect it, too. (Clorox or Lysol wipes work best.) And finally, before storing it, let it dry completely, zip it up, cover it in a dust bag (or trash bag), and place it in a cool, dry spot. Avoid humid areas like attics or basements with no airflow.

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

For this story, Dobrina Zhekova worked with T+L's editors to determine the best travel trunks after a series of lab and real-world tests in which every trunk was evaluated based on rigorous assessments. Dobrina has an extensive luggage collection from many of the brands in this story, including July, Away, and Delsey Paris. As a seasoned traveler herself with over a decade in the industry, she is very familiar with what makes a good travel trunk and what the most useful features are. We will continue to update the article as we test new trunks that we love.

Louis Vuitton Unveils 200 Tributary Trunks in Los Angeles

Happy 200th, Louis.

louis vuitton 200 trunks, 200 designers

When the young French carpenter Louis Vuitton first set out on a 248-mile journey (on foot!) to Paris in 1837 to begin his career as a trunk maker, he set in motion a life’s work that would far outlast his lifespan. His pièce de résistance? The travel trunk, a then-revolutionary luxury item that has left its monogrammed mark on design history.

Now, on Vuitton’s 200th birthday, his predecessors have taken his inventive “art of travel” dictum one step further: turning the emblematic trunk into a blank canvas. The traveling exhibition 200 Trunks, 200 Visionaries , on view in Los Angeles through September 6, showcases a mosaic of 200 talents who were invited to dream up their own versions of the trunk. “Louis’s lasting legacy is the trunk—the flat-top, canvas trunk that he designed—and so it seemed the evident medium to work with,” said Louis Vuitton’s visual image director Faye McLeod.

The show is staged in a stunning orange-and-white-striped building a few strides from the fashion house’s flagship store on Beverly Hills’ illustrious Rodeo Drive. Inside, the Louis Vuitton team constructed sprawling wall-to-wall scenography that pays homage to Vuitton’s signature patterning and early trunk motif. One installation highlights the designs of Frank Gehry , the starchitect who not only designed the Louis Vuitton Foundation building in France, but also uncapped a new perfume bottle design with the famed fashion house in 2021, which came with its own custom trunk.

Among the talents tapped: Design brand Fornasetti ’s trunk features a historic sketch of Lina Cavalieri peering through a keyhole surrounded by classic lock-and-key Fornasetti motifs; Milanese architect Hannes Peer goes maximalist, with a collage of retro travel stickers; and architect Peter Marino ’s edgy black leather biker trunk seems as if it were almost pulled directly from his closet . For his contribution, Brooklyn Balloon Company founder Robert Moy held nothing back, enveloping his colorful trunk in an immersive room of real balloons (a real-life Up moment).

“This project has always been about creativity—a real tribute to Louis’s ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit,’ Faye said in a press release. “We get to see how such a cross-section of talents answered the same brief while also taking a moment to appreciate the man himself.”

The exhibition was first unveiled in December at the brand’s historic residence in Asnières-sur-Seine, France, followed by a stopover in Singapore in April. After opening its doors in Beverly Hills, it will continue to New York City. In 2023, all trunks will be up for auction at Sotheby’s, with proceeds going to charity organizations supporting young creatives.

See below for a sneak peek of the reimagined trunks at the L.A. exhibition—then head over to La La Land for a live viewing .

Why Cosmic Cobalt Is Our 2025 Color of the Year

We're predicting this deep and mystical shade will surge in popularity next year.

Some colors are simply universal, playing a significant role in every culture and every era—indeed in every person’s life. Such is our 2025 Color of the Year , Cosmic Cobalt.

It is the color humans have encountered for thousands of years when they dared to look beyond themselves—to the sky or to the sea—and wonder what it would be like to dream bigger, heeding the call to explore. From the Ishtar Gate of Ancient Babylon to lapis lazuli gems adorning the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs, Cosmic Cobalt has a history as grand as civilization itself.

Though this bold, rich blue has been a royal favorite for eons, it is also down to earth—the dynamic friend who gets invited to every dinner party. With a presence that is captivating yet calming, this confident hue commands rather than seeks attention. “At a party, Cosmic Cobalt is the tall person in the room who doesn’t speak much, but when he does, everyone stops to listen,” notes designer Jean Liu.

Here, we explore why our 2025 Color of the Year has a history as vast as the heavens and a future as sparkling as the night sky.

The OG “Royal Blue”

The origins of this saturated shade can be traced to lapis lazuli , a gemstone that has been used in art and jewelry since 7500 B.C. A brilliant blue stone accented by white or golden flecks, lapis was carved into amulets and sacred objects for ancient Egyptian pharaohs, who believed it represented divinity.

Today, Cosmic Cobalt remains rooted in royalty, as A-list superstars—our modern royals—command runways and red carpets in this flattering shade. In the press, outlets from Vogue to VERANDA have begun reporting on why the “pop of red” trend in design has been eclipsed by the latest must-have accessory: a pop of cobalt blue .

Prized by Artists

Historically, ultramarine—the deepest cobalt blue—was created by grinding lapis into a fine powder. This laborious process made it the most expensive pigment available (gold being second), and during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, it was often reserved for depicting the robes of angels or other religious figures. Eventually, a less costly pigment was developed from cobalt ores, giving the color its present-day name.

art from every era

Artists throughout history—from Vermeer and Klimt to Miro and Mondrian—have used the color extensively. In fact, 20th-century French artist Yves Klein loved the shade so much that he patented a version called International Klein Blue. Today, contemporary artists like Carlos Mercado and Alicia LaChance carry on the legacy of Klein, who called this mystical color the “physical manifestation of cosmic energy that, otherwise invisible, floats freely in the air.”

Universal Appeal

What is it about this deep blue—the color of the night sky—that unites us? Whether gathering to watch a rocket launch or the most recent solar eclipse, we put aside our differences and come together when we turn our gaze upward and marvel at the universe, as humans have done for thousands of years.

And 2025 will be no different, as many stargazers travel toward the Arctic with hopes of viewing the Northern Lights, which scientists say will be more clearly visible than they have been in two decades.

Recognizing the beauty of a star-filled sky, designers have begun creating “night rooms” for their most discerning clients. Think of it as evening’s answer to the sunroom—the lovechild of a library and a lounge. Just as gazing at the stars brought our ancestors together in contemplation, a night room swathed in Cosmic Cobalt is a place for expanding one’s mind and receiving new ideas, whether alone with a book or while hosting an intimate group.

Cosmic Cobalt “allows you to be introspective and allows big, wide open thoughts that create a feeling of peace and confident tranquility,” says designer and paint expert Annie Sloan. “It is utterly universal, while challenging conventional ideas about what a ‘universal’ color might be.”

Complex Yet Congenial

One of the qualities that designers love most about Cosmic Cobalt is its duality. “It’s vibrant and piercing,” says designer Nick Olsen, “but somehow more accessible than the other primary colors.”

Designer Meg Braff agrees. It can be “attention grabbing and high energy” in small doses, but when used all over, “it takes on a more soothing, reflective quality.” Though Cosmic Cobalt plays well with almost any color, Braff especially loves it paired with brass accents , a nod to the starry sky or the gold-flecked lapis lazuli stone.

a cobalt entry in manhattan and a cobalt pool mexico

Designer Garrow Kedigian also finds that using Cosmic Cobalt with brassy yellows “is like magic.” Witness his own foyer (above), which pairs a deep blue with metallic accents, leading into a mustard drawing room. “It’s the ‘mood ring’ of paint colors, taking on different personalities in different light,” he says.

The “It” Color of Luxury

If blue and white is a time-honored palette in decorating, then blue and gold may be the jewelry and timepiece equivalent. From lapis lazuli earrings by Jacquie Aiche to Rolex's Oyster Perpetual Deepsea watch , it’s no surprise that Cosmic Cobalt continues making waves as the “it” color of luxury.

rolex timepieces la prairie skincare jacquie aiche jewelry

But decorating and fashion aren’t its only purview; Cosmic Cobalt is also quickly becoming the go-to color for high-end beauty products. Dyson has released a limited edition cobalt colorway of its best-in-class hair styling tools, while luxury skincare brands like Augustinus Bader and La Prairie use cobalt for their branding and packaging.

This is no accident. La Prairie went so far as to publish an article about the significance of cobalt , calling it “the most legendary color” that “exudes the depth and richness of a true object of design.” We couldn’t agree more.

2024 rodeo queen marks a milestone for the Pendleton Round-Up

Kayla Fossek jumps the rail during the 2021 Grand Entry of the Pendleton Round-Up.

At 1:15 p.m. Sept. 15, 2021, a loud boom signaled the start of the rodeo in the Pendleton Round-Up arena . Round-Up Princess Kayla Fossek entered on a sorrel horse wearing red leather chaps and matching red roses on her hat. She had dreamed of this moment since childhood.

Galloping over 30 mph, Fossek jumped the rail, then raced around the track with one hand on the reins and the other waving to thousands of spectators.

“Sailing over the rail quite literally feels like flying,” says Fossek.

Practicing for the Grand Entry requires more than 100 hours, but the whirlwind event itself ends within minutes. It’s a once in a lifetime experience that Fossek will get to live out again when she enters the arena Sept. 11 as the 2024 Round-Up Queen.

Her reign marks a milestone for the Round-Up . A member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation , Fossek is the first Native American Round-Up queen since the last All Indian Round-Up Court ended in 1953 and the first to hold the three titles of Happy Canyon princess and Round-Up queen and princess.

“Kayla has grown so much in her ability to be confident in who she is and what she represents,” says Round-Up Court coach Toni Minthorn, who is also a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation. “She’s a great leader. She has high expectations of herself and those around her.”

Founded in 1910 to celebrate its Wild West roots and showcase the skills of cowboys across the Northwest, today the Pendleton Round-Up draws around 50,000 spectators every second week of September. The event is famed (and feared) for its large grassy arena and is a seven-time winner of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Large Outdoor Rodeo of the Year award.

From its beginning, the Round-Up has been characterized by its Native American participation. Umatilla, Walla Walla and Cayuse people from the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation, located next to Pendleton, and other regional tribes set up over 300 tipis in the same spots that their ancestors camped in over 100 years ago. In the evenings, Native people and cowboys join to put on the Happy Canyon Night Show, Oregon’s official outdoor pageant, which reenacts life before European settlement and tells the story of how Pendleton came to be.

Kayla Fossek poses on horseback wearing white fringed leather chaps and vest and cowboy hat

Representing the night show and the rodeo are the Happy Canyon princesses (established in 1956) and the Round-Up princesses and queen (established in 1910). Together, they travel to other rodeos and events across the country to promote the show throughout the year. During Round-Up week, the courts make appearances before the Happy Canyon show and for the Grand Entry.

While the Happy Canyon princesses are affiliated with local tribes, the Round-Up Court positions are open to anyone who can represent the Western lifestyle and rodeo culture.

Fossek held the title of Happy Canyon princess in 2019. She is the fifth person to hold both the titles of Happy Canyon and Round-Up princess after Minthorn (Happy Canyon 1978 and Round-Up 1982), Debra Weathers Croswell (1985 and 1988), Katie Harris (2010 and 2012) and Marissa Baumgartner (2014 and 2015).

One of Fossek’s hopes as queen is to encourage more Native American girls to apply to be on the Round-Up Court. She notes the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation’s long ties to horses and the emphasis on horsemanship on the Round-Up Court.

“This tribe’s culture is so enveloped in horses, and they’re so deep in the blood of this area,” says Fossek.

The Cayuse people were especially known for their skilled horsemanship and the development of the Cayuse pony. A wealthy Cayuse family would own upwards of 2,000 horses, according to tribal history .

“With modern times a lot of that history has been lost,” says Fossek. “With such a big platform like Round-Up, I really want that side of the culture to be shown.”

Though Fossek was born and raised on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation next to a big rodeo town, her family didn’t always ride or own horses. Growing up, she remembers seeing wild horses roam while hunting on the reservation with her dad.

“I was always horse crazy,” says Fossek. “I spent years and years begging for one.”

When the tribe conducted a wild horse roundup, her father decided to adopt two of them. Minthorn recalls meeting Fossek there.

“She was kind of shy then, but she wanted a horse,” says Minthorn, who breeds horses. “After that, she started taking lessons and working [for me].”

With a Round-Up poster on her bedroom wall, Fossek spent hours every day watching YouTube videos about horses.

Soon, Minthorn began taking Fossek to training sessions with the Round-Up Court, where Fossek helped to line up the horses. If there was time, Fossek would practice jumping.

“I idolized the girls. They were my role models as a little girl,” says Fossek. “Being able to train with them before I even tried out was awesome.”

Many court members spend their childhoods ranching and competing in rodeos. Lacking that background, Fossek knew she would have to work extra hard to hone her riding skills.

Preceding her years on the courts, Fossek began volunteering at the Round-Up sorting steers and selling souvenirs at the FFA booth. She also acquired her paint horse, Billy, that she competed with in the American Indian Beauty Pageant during Round-Up.

While Fossek had grown up immersed in tribal culture it wasn’t until she became the 2019 Happy Canyon princess along with her cousin that she learned about her family’s long connection to the court. Fossek was surprised when she discovered that 18 of the women on her father’s side had served as Happy Canyon princesses.

“When I started working for Toni, she told me. My dad didn’t even know,” says Fossek. “There’s so much history that I truly just did not know. Being involved in Happy Canyon has taught me more of my Native American culture than anything.”

Fossek’s paternal grandmother had passed away before she was born, and her mother is not a tribal member, so much of the knowledge that would traditionally be passed down between generations of women was lost.

Kayla Fossek wears regalia and poses for a photo next to her horse as he holds a beaded sign that reads 2019 Happy Canyon Princess

During her Happy Canyon reign, Fossek carried a purse beaded by her grandmother, the only beaded item Fossek’s family retained. Fossek’s regalia, including a fully beaded cape, and horse trappings were made by her aunt and previously worn by her other cousin who served as a 2018 Happy Canyon princess.

Buckskin dresses, traditional clothing worn for formal occasions, are often passed down through several generations and can take years to make. Wing dresses, made of a lighter fabric, are often used for more casual events.

“If it’s raining or really hot out or you want to be festive, wing dresses are really fun because you can go with any color and they’re fairly quick to make,” says Fossek.

Participating in Happy Canyon has also given Fossek’s family the opportunity to create new heirlooms.

“God bless my mother,” says Fossek. “She made regalia and had no clue what she was doing just so my kids could have heirlooms.”

After the 2019 Round-Up week, Fossek transitioned from Happy Canyon to Round-Up princess and from high school to college student. (She graduated from Pendleton High School in 2019 and from Blue Mountain Community College in 2024.) Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Round-Up was canceled in 2020 for the third time in its history (the other years were 1943 and 1944 due to World War II).

During the pandemic, public appearances were conducted in the open and large parties turned into small private gatherings. A new tradition was started when the court decided to host its kickoff party in the middle of the Round-Up grounds. Though the rules normally prevented court positions from being held multiple years, Fossek and the others were given the opportunity to continue their reign into 2021.

“It was like a fever dream now that I look back,” says Fossek.

The two years in between Fossek’s reign as a princess and queen allowed her to grow as a person and rider. As a mentor to the princesses, the key qualities that the directors look for, besides having served as princess, are maturity and leadership.

Though the princesses have referred to themselves as Fossek’s entourage, Fossek is more than happy to give them the spotlight.

“I’ve had my time, so this is an opportunity to be like, these are my girls and to show them off to the world,” says Fossek. “The experiences you get from being in a position like this are awesome, and I just want to help them experience that in the best way possible.”

The court traveled to Canada this year for the world-famous Calgary Stampede (the court’s last attendance was in 2014), a highlight for the group. In the final two months before Round-Up, the court stays closer to home, making appearances in Joseph and Sisters.

“You feel the energy building,” says Fossek. “When they see us, they know Round-Up’s coming. Especially when we do school visitations, it’s like Santa’s coming to town.”

Kayla, tall in the saddle, poses for a photo with Billy

To Fossek, being the first to hold all three court titles feels like a culmination of all the hard work put in over the years, not just by her, but also by her family and mentors.

“So many people worked hard to get me to the point where I could ride and speak well,” says Fossek. “This year I want to use this platform to give them the recognition they deserve and help them reach their goals ‘cause I’m big on taking a step back.”

Jason Hill, a Round-Up director, says that family support is essential for members of the court.

“I don’t know if a girl could do it without that,” Hill says. “Their families will travel in front of them, and it’s their responsibility to get the horse ready for the princesses and queen.”

For Fossek, having her parents along on the road with her has been a highlight of this year.

“It’s like they’re little kids again, being able to travel and have fun, and that’s so fun for me to watch,” says Fossek.

On her mother’s side, Fossek hopes to inspire her cousins who don’t have a connection to Happy Canyon to try out for Round-Up Court. For both Happy Canyon and Round-Up court applicants, having a family legacy is an asset.

“I’m still half white, and so I do have a lot of family that aren’t enrolled [tribal members],” says Fossek. “I never had the cowboy side, so being able to give them that history to get a step in the door will hopefully make it easier for them.”

Fossek’s family has already seen several changes. A few years after the adoption of her first horses, her family acquired a wheat farm with enough land for a herd, which today includes nine horses. Fossek’s cousins now ride in parades, and her brothers use the horses for everything from camping and hunting to performing prescribed burns.

“The dream of Round-Up and just that love for the horses and Western lifestyle, it has completely transformed not just my life but my whole family’s,” says Fossek. “If I wasn’t a horse crazy little girl nagging my parents, I couldn’t imagine us having all this.”

For her final year on the courts, Fossek is focused on savoring every moment.

“I’ve just been amped for months to hit Round-Up and do it all, but at the same time I’m really trying to take every second in,” says Fossek.

After Round-Up is over, Fossek plans to continue her studies in biology and explore career options. However, she sees herself staying close to home where she’ll be able to stay involved in the Round-Up whether that’s through working at a booth or mentoring her younger cousins who aspire to be court princesses.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” says Fossek. “Growing up not knowing that I would be able to do this and going as far as I have, I still can’t believe it some days.”
