Welcome to Nationwide FlexPlus Travel Insurance
If you’re thinking about opening a nationwide flexplus current account but need to know whether your pre-existing medical conditions will be covered and how much this will cost, you’ll be able to find all the information, including a price here., pre-existing conditions upgrade.
The upgrade is valid for 12 months (subject to eligibility) and is designed to cover the costs of cancellation, emergency medical treatment abroad and getting home if any insured person becomes suddenly and unexpectedly ill or injured due to a pre-existing illness, injury or disease.
Undiagnosed symptoms are not covered therefore you don’t need to tell us about them. If you are under investigation, for example waiting for tests or results, or a referral appointment for any undiagnosed health problems or symptoms, you should consider waiting until you have a diagnosis before booking a trip.
You can obtain a quote for pre-existing medical conditions upgrades on the following pages, but please remember:
- you will not be able to purchase the upgrade until you have opened a Nationwide FlexPlus current account
- any premium quoted is indicative and remains valid for 30 days from the date you get your quote. After 30 days the quote will expire and you will need to get a new quote for the upgrade that you need
Once you have opened your account, you will be able to register your details with us to accept or amend your quote.
Single trip cover information
We understand that your needs may change, and there may be times where you may need to increase some of the limits or extend your cover.
Here you’ll be able to get a quote to increase your trip duration limit, increase your cancelling or coming home early limit or extend your cruise cover. You should review each upgrade to understand if you require any of them for your trip.
To ensure you are fully covered, you should consider buying your upgrade at the point of booking the trip.
We’ll provide the insured persons with the cover set out in their terms and conditions for trips up to a maximum of 31 days.
If you’re planning a longer trip we won’t cover any incident which occurs after 31 days unless a longer trip upgrade has been purchased.
We’ll provide the insured persons with the cover set out in their terms and conditions for trips up to a maximum of £5,000 per person. If you or anyone covered by this policy are planning a trip and want to increase this limit you can upgrade to a maximum of either £7,500 or £10,000 per person
This upgrade covers one single trip, you will need to buy this for each trip you need an increased limit for.
If the insured persons have booked a cruise, the cover as set out in their terms and conditions includes claims for cancellation and medical emergency. You can however increase cover under your policy for things such as cancellation of a scheduled port stop.
This upgrade covers one single cruise, you will need to buy this for each cruise you need additional cover for.

How we analyse travel insurance
We analyse and rate 66 key elements of travel insurance policies to come up with the overall policy score. We assess how important each individual element is to travellers when choosing and using a travel insurance policy, and factor this in when calculating our total policy score.
Initially, we score all of the product elements out of five, reflecting how competitive each provider is in this area compared with other insurers. We then adjust the impact the more and less important elements have on the overall policy score.

Nationwide FlexPlus members benefit from AA partnership
Nationwide Building Society’s highly-rated1 FlexPlus account is moving to the AA for its breakdown cover from 1 March 2022.
This latest partnership between Nationwide and the AA means FlexPlus account holders will have UK and European breakdown service including Accident Assist cover – a complimentary 24/7 accident claims service. Cover will be provided to any vehicle the member is travelling in, as well as any named person driving the account holder’s vehicle. This cover builds on the comprehensive benefits offered as part of the FlexPlus account with no increase to the monthly fee of £13.
FlexPlus account holders will also have access to the AA’s app, where they can instantly report a breakdown and track how quickly help will arrive.
If members are involved in an accident that wasn’t their fault, they will be able to access vehicle recovery and arrange a replacement vehicle, which the AA will manage on their behalf2.
As well as offering UK and European breakdown cover, the FlexPlus current account also provides:
- Worldwide family travel insurance
- Worldwide family mobile phone insurance
- Commission free usage abroad when withdrawing cash or making payments
Opening a FlexPlus account is simple and can be easily done online. If you decide to switch3 your current account to a FlexPlus account from another provider you could be eligible for £100, or £125 if you’re already a Nationwide member.
James Broome, Head of Current Account & Credit Cards at Nationwide Building Society, said: “Our FlexPlus account provides members excellent value for money and benefits for the whole family, such as worldwide family travel insurance and worldwide family mobile phone insurance. We regularly review the additional benefits we offer to ensure we’re meeting our members changings needs and providing great value. One example of this is the protection FlexPlus members will receive through our new partnership with the AA, which will provide Nationwide members access to the AA’s fleet of 2,550 highly trained roadside breakdown specialists.”
Gavin Franks, director of business services at the AA, said: “We are delighted to partner with Nationwide and to serve their FlexPlus members. Our five-star award winning patrols will be ready to help those broken down across the UK and Europe. By providing members access to our app, we can ensure that drivers can see help is on the way and keep them on the road. Our accident assistance will provide additional support to those that need our help in times of trouble and means that we can provide end-to-end services for their members.”

Hi everyone
We are going on P&O Iona in July. We have Nationwide Flex Plus which covers us for travel insurance. Just wondering how we can have this confirmed at Embarkation. As we have never received a policy . Sorry to ask
Many thanks

I have travel insurance with Nationwide Flex Plus but had to buy another insurance with Cover For You for my trip in Aug because my Nationwide policy doesn't cover cruise. Recently I got a letter from Nationwide listing all the benefit with Flex Plus, do you think you can pop into your local branch to ask them about a copy?
Thank you for your quick response. Yes I will pop into my local branch. Many thanks again. Enjoy your cruise in August too.
You can log on to the Nationwide insurance web site at https://nationwide.ukitravel.com/customerportal/auth/logon where there is an option to download a "Confirmation of Cover" Letter.
And this Flex Plus insurance does cover Cruises, will be mentioned on the confirmation letter.
We also have Flex Account travel insurance. It covers cruise travel. For an extra £20 each we were able to purchase additional cruise cover. You can claim for various situations such as missing the ship following an excursion. Unfortunately Nationwide will only offer cover to Flex Plus accounts after the end of September.
We have just transferred our current account to Nationwide Flexplus Account to take advantage of worldwide travel insurance which does cover for cruises and for an extra supplement of £40 covers for cabin confinement, missed ports and insurance covers all members of family. As previously said you can print off insurance details on the website as stated.
In response to a previous enquiry on another thread recently, I researched the cruise cover on the Flexplus policy.
I've had a look at the policy and it seems cruise cover is included:
This policy provides cover for cruise trips. If you want to extend the cover provided as standard you can buy a Cruise Upgrade.
The enhanced cover is the additional £40 premium. It covers both of you if it is a joint account. That provides the missed port cover as described earlier also confinement to your cabin:
Confined to cabin We will pay £150 for each insured person every 24 hours up to a total of £1,500 if you have been ordered to stay in your cabin by the medical officer.
P. S. I've checked my documentation and last year we received a postal confirmation of the Travel Insurance Schedule (2 pages) identifying us by name, policy number and included upgrades such as age extension, declared medical conditions and the enhanced cruise cover as above. I've just renewed so am expecting a new schedule to be posted to me.

Could you explain this please? Are they stopping cover for new customers or not renewing for existing after September? That will be a blow if so.
Unfortunately it applies to all standard Flex Accounts. If you want insurance cover included you need to upgrade to a Flex Plus Account.

Oh I understand. I'd interpreted it as a change in the cover for Flexplus accounts after September. That's a relief. Thanks.
Good Morning everyone. Thank you all so much for all of the useful information.
9 hours ago, Feelgood 50 said: Good Morning everyone. Thank you all so much for all of the useful information.
This thread reminded me that although I renewed a couple of weeks ago I hadn't had anything through the post. So I've just rung up NW to say I'd renewed our policy and to ask if I might expect a paper copy of the Schedule through the post. They arranged to send this confirmation to me (I might get 2 now!) but I will feel better having something 'official' in my hand.
The one I had last year was headed:
Nationwide Building Society Travel Insurance schedule from 00/00/2021 to 00/00/2022 (for the relevant period)
It identifies you by name with upgrades and medical declaration.
If you haven't had one yet, you might like to ring too and ask for the policy schedule to be sent to you just for peace of mind.
Hi Kruzseeka.
Thank you for your reply. I will call Nationwide tomorrow.
Many Thanks
MBP&O2/O
Interesting. If I upgrade my basic account to the bells and whistles plus account it will cost me £13pm. Allow for a couple of insurance upgrades and it will still be under £200pa.
The absolute cheapest worldwide cruise cover I can get to meet my needs is £510pa. Some firms are quoting in excess of £2000.
Funny that one company is way WAY cheaper if you take out an annual policy as opposed to a single trip one???
Furthere enquiries me thinks!

Well, we let our annual M&S policy lapse. It did cover bikes and had no exclusions on it that would prohibit riding trails, but the price had gone up from about £250 for the two of us to £400. So I’m now looking at Nationwide, not least as it’s the last bank left in my local town. I can’t find a recent thread so for anyone that has a flex plus account, can you tell me if it has any exclusions for bikes please? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
getting away with it so far!
We started using it this year. Looks good for bikes as far as I can remember. I'm going to let my other insurance lapse on the strength of it. Can't remember the details, but I was happy enough that I'd be covered when I was reviewing it all.

just check the additional premium for cover for pre-existing medical conditions. For me, it is cheaper to buy a standalone policy from Tesco (underwritten by Axa) than pay the top up for Nationwide.
125cc limit if you hire bike whilst on holiday. If you set off from the UK on a motorcycle holiday/trip have and wear protective equipment and have a suitable license for your trusted stead. There is no 125Cc limits. No maximum bike size quoted.

I had a breakdown on bike and called their rescue line. On the one hand, it was sub-contracted out to a local bike recovery man as they do not have their own fleet. On the other hand, service was excellent and the bloke who turned up to help did so in a reasonable amount of time and got the bike going again. Have also used them a couple of times for broken down car; again, service was excellent.

Changes afoot for the Flexplus policy with a new underwriter in April 2024. Details here https://www.nationwide.co.uk/current-accounts/flexplus/travel-insurance-changes/ I have looked through the PDF. Aviva is the new underwriter and the motorcycle clauses are the same for your own bike i.e. have a full licence (generic comment about all vehicles), wear a helmet and comply with any local laws re. other safety gear.
Thanks, Wessie. Don’t injure or kill yourself, when travelling in excess of the posted speed limit. Riding ‘At a speed appropriate, in my opinion’ is not an adequate defence.
Flexplus recovery breakdown is now covered by the AA.

I have the Co-op equivalent bank account which I chose because the RAC cover seemed a slightly better. Might be worth a look?

FlexPlus Current Account - Nationwide Travel Insurance
22 January 2020 at 1:13AM. I currently have the FlexPlus. When setting up the account they were unable to offer me the travel insurance as I ticked I have pre-exciting medical condition and ticked yes to the ''do I take medication box''. I have read that I might get approved if I ring them and if I meet their criteria and maybe pay a premium.

I'm looking into changing bank accounts and the Nationwide flex plus looks interesting as I'll use most of the package. The one I'm not sure about is travel insurance. There's a number to call to check, but does anyone know already if they will accept diabetics. I'm T2 on Metformin and Gliclazide if it makes any difference.
