North Market North Market free

Ohio's only public market is in Columbus and certainly worth a walk through. North Market was first established in 1876 and is home to more than 30 vendors selling a range of products, including fresh meat, produce, baked goods, cheese and flowers. On select Saturdays, a portion of the market is set up outside, and on Sundays in June to October local artwork, furniture, jewelry and more is also on display.

Visitors say this market provides a wonderful food selection at affordable prices. Many were impressed with the sheer variety of cuisine types represented at this small market, and say there's something for everyone here. A few warn that the market gets quite congested on the weekends, so it's best to arrive early or visit on a weekday to beat the crowds.

Huntington Park Huntington Park

Enjoying a baseball game at Huntington Park is one of recent travelers' favorite things to do. The homegrown Columbus Clippers are the Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians and  visitors appreciate the views, the atmosphere and the affordability of games at this ballpark. The park can accommodate 10,000 but most say it's rarely crowded, allowing for visitors to walk around and explore different parts of the stadium. Recent travelers added there's not a bad seat in the house.

Single game tickets cost between $7 and $20 for adults and between $4 and $7 for children younger than 12 and seniors, depending on the seat. Several concessions vendors are spread throughout the stadium for food and drink needs.  You'll find the stadium downtown in the Arena District; parking is available on-site for a small fee. For more information on game times and tickets, visit the  website .

German Village German Village free

This village earned its name from the German immigrants who settled here in the early 19th century. Much of the neighborhood has retained its Germanic roots, evident in the architecture and  cuisine found here.  For delectable sausage, schnitzel and cream puffs,  Schmidt's Restaurant and Sausage Haus is the place to go. There's also an annual Haus und Garten Tour and German Village Oktoberfest . And don't worry: You can walk off all that food with a stroll in nearby Schiller Park, named for German poet Friedrich Schiller. The European aesthetic of the neighborhood, as well as its local shops and restaurants ( The Book Loft and the Golden Hobby Shop, for instance) make it one of the most charming places in Columbus.

Visitors love this quaint neighborhood, citing its authentic feel and charming shops as the perfect atmosphere for an afternoon stroll. However, a handful of travelers warn that other than eating and walking around, there's not much else to do here.

The Scioto Mile The Scioto Mile free

After years of organization and environmental rehabilitation, the Scioto Mile opened in 2015 and comprises several acres of parkland. Miles of trails snake along the Scioto River – perfect for strolling, jogging or biking – and the 15,000-square-foot interactive fountain (and its water spouts) at Bicentennial Park attracts young ones while the park's free summer concert series appeals to the adult crowd. The area is also home to a free outdoor climbing wall and the environmental- and conservation-focused Audubon Center. Recent visitors said a visit here can make for a romantic evening, a fun-filled family day or a place for solo reflection and admiration of the city. Travelers add the sunset views are spectacular and that you should remember to bring your camera to capture the moment.

You'll find the Scioto Mile in downtown Columbus, along the banks of the Scioto River stretching from Broad Street to Rich Street. It's free to access and open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily; parking is available nearby. For a list of events and festivals, or more info about the Scioto Mile, visit its website .

The complex is home to a number of restaurants as well, which range from fast and casual (Panera Bread and Cosi) to more upscale establishments like Smith & Wollensky and Mitchell's Ocean Club . Come summertime, Easton Town Center hosts several events, including art shows, yoga classes, movie screenings and concerts.

Travelers say this is a great place to shop, grab a meal and people-watch. However, some say that it's best to visit this shopping complex during the day as lately the nighttime crowd has become a little rough.

Center of Science and Industry Center of Science and Industry

This museum is geared toward kids, but adults don't seem bored by its interactive exhibits either. From a science park and computer simulators to the energy explorers interactive laboratory and live science shows, the Center of Science and Industry (or COSI) is jam-packed with interesting things to do and see. Museumgoers can ride in a space capsule, learn more about ocean exploration technology and "order" science exhibits to work on as a group (three particular traveler favorites). Meanwhile, the COSI Planetarium treats visitors to a presentation on the planets, stars and universe, while the National Geographic Giant Screen Theater shows films on the national parks, Africa's terrain and creatures, and more.

Travelers agree this is an enjoyable museum to visit with the kids, citing the interactive exhibits as informative and engaging. Some were disappointed with the high cost of admission though.

Columbus Museum of Art Columbus Museum of Art

Even though this museum is not particularly large, visitors say its artwork and exhibits are fascinating. The Columbus Museum of Art introduced a new wing in 2015 with additional gallery space for permanent collections and rotating exhibits. Speaking of traveling exhibits, museumgoers said they appreciated the different collections highlighted, adding that the rotating schedule means new art is showcased every few months. Another perk according to past visitors: the Wonder Room, aimed at engaging children with hands-on activities designed to teach them about art.

Situated downtown, the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Thursday until 9 p.m. It's closed on Mondays. Admission costs $14 for adults, $8 for seniors and students and $5 for kids ages 6 to 17. (Admission is free on Sundays.) Find out more information on the Columbus Museum of Art website .

Visiting Columbus, Ohio: 1-Day, 2-Day & 3-Day Itineraries

Written by Anietra Hamper Updated Apr 14, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Ohio's capital city of Columbus is an artsy and sporty cosmopolitan city with Midwestern roots. You will find activities and destinations that pay homage to the state's agricultural industry, and sections of neighborhoods made up of dozens of ethnic groups making their first homes in America.

What this means for visitors trying to plan an itinerary is that you can visit a world-class art museum or catch a live fashion show one minute, and fill a basket of just-picked produce from a local farmers market the next.

It means that you can cheer on NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets for the win or catch a fly-ball during a Columbus Clipper's baseball game at Huntington Park, then grab dinner at one of the many local ethnic restaurants representing more than 40 nationalities.

With these one-, two-, and three-day itineraries in Columbus, you can get a mix of the highlights while working in some appreciation for the finer details of the city that turn first-time visitors into yearly vacationers.

On This Page:

  • One-Day Itinerary
  • Two-Day Itinerary
  • Three-Day Itinerary

ONE-DAY ITINERARY

Columbus skyline from bridge with sculpture

Things to Do in One Day in Columbus: If your trip is a quick one in the capital city, it is best to start in the downtown area then expand into the nearby neighborhoods of the Short North to the north and German Village to the south, if time permits.

Start with a visit in the heart of the city at the Ohio Statehouse. There are regular free tours offered daily, or you can explore the Capital Square complex on your own. The outside grounds are filled with statues, monuments, and hidden finds like a small bee aviary on one side of the statehouse.

Ohio Statehouse

The statehouse museum gift shop has unique Ohio-made treasures to take home with you. Walk a few blocks to the Scioto Mile along the riverfront and grab lunch from a local food truck vendor as you enjoy the Scioto River from one of the many benches located along the green space.

If you want to stay in the heart of downtown, you can spend the rest of the day at one of the top attractions in the city , the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, and catch an afternoon baseball game at Huntington Park .

This district is a pedestrian-friendly area, so you can spend an afternoon here and stop for a coffee or bite to eat at one of the local eateries before taking a stroll in Goodale Park. Make your way to the historic North Market, where you can buy fresh produce, baked goods, cheeses, and ethnic food from local vendors.

Another great half-day option is in German Village, where you can walk the brick side streets to boutique shops and cafés. You can get a take-out lunch at one of the notable German Village restaurants, like The Thurman Cafe or Katzinger's Deli, and head to Schiller Park to enjoy a picnic. Walk off lunch by going to the famed Book Loft , one of the largest independent bookstores in the United States, with 32 rooms to explore.

CoGo bicycles in downtown Columbus

Getting Around: Depending on your style, you can explore downtown Columbus with Columbus City Adventures guided tours or tackle the landscape on your own by foot.

A fun way to explore downtown is with a bike rental from a CoGo Bike Share rental station. There are more than 40 CoGo rental stations throughout downtown Columbus, so you can pick one up in one spot and drop it off at another station when you are ready to return it.

Columbus is a bike-friendly city, with dedicated bike lanes throughout downtown and into adjacent neighborhoods. You can ride down to the Scioto Mile along the riverfront and North Bank Park , which are connection points to trails that extend into Columbus suburbs.

Where to Eat: Columbus is home to Schmidt's Sausage Haus , which has served authentic German cuisine and their famous cream puffs in German Village since 1967.

This beloved eatery was started by a family that was among the first German settlers to the city. If you have an adventurous palate, you can try one of the many small ethnic restaurants near downtown to sample Somali, Indian, Nigerian, and Vietnamese dishes.

Columbus food truck

The Columbus food truck scene is big, and you can download an app to find where local trucks are located each day to cater to your current food mood or location. More than 200 food trucks drive their way around the city at any given time, serving up gourmet grilled cheese, alphabet soup, pita sandwiches, breakfast, vegan food, Korean kimbap, and every foodie combo imaginable.

One of the newest dining concepts in Columbus is at the Budd Dairy Food Hall . This renovated dairy production house has a roster of local chefs that create food offerings that change periodically. It is designed like an upscale food court, with selections that range from Filipino street food and Southern fare to pizza and tacos.

If you want to relax with a full dinner menu and some of the best views of the downtown skyline and riverfront with floor-to-ceiling windows you can dine at The Boathouse Restaurant or Milestone 229 at Bicentennial Park .

Where to Stay in Columbus: Lodging options in Columbus range from boutique hotels with executive suites to budget hotels with simple offerings for a good value.

Luxury Hotels:

  • One of the most exclusive hotels in downtown Columbus is the luxury Hotel LeVeque, Autograph Collection , which is inside one of the most recognizable and historic buildings in the Columbus Skyline. The restored LeVeque Tower has a boutique hotel with all of the extras, from marble bathrooms and spacious suites to rooms with panoramic views of the riverfront. You can walk to top attractions like the Ohio Theatre and the Palace Theatre .
  • If you want to stay close to the Arena District, Nationwide Arena, or the Convention Center, the Hilton Columbus Downtown is centrally located, with luxury bedding, on-site specialty dining, and featured artwork by local artists throughout the hotel.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • Most of the hotel options in Columbus fall in this category, including Homewood Suites by Hilton, Columbus , located near the Polaris shopping area north of downtown. If your visit requires a bit of retail therapy, you will enjoy staying in this area, as it keeps you close to Polaris Mall, Tanger Outlets, and the Easton Town Center shopping complex.
  • If you want to stay centrally located near downtown and close to the Ohio State University and other attractions, the Hampton Inn and Suites Columbus Downtown is a nice option. You are within walking distance of everything in the downtown area, and with free breakfast, it is a good option for families.

Budget Hotels:

  • If you are saving your money to spend on attractions and great food during your stay in Columbus, you can find budget hotels on the edge of the downtown area, like the WoodSpring Suites Columbus North I-270 on the north end. The hotel is affordable and about half the price of other hotel options, but you are still close to the I-270 freeway, with quick access to downtown or to any of the Columbus suburbs.

TWO-DAY ITINERARY

Ohio Theatre

Day 1 With two-days in Columbus, you can expand your sightseeing a bit more. You may want to follow the one-day itinerary to start, since it includes the top things to see, or you can explore the more cultural side of Columbus.

You can start your day with a free public yoga class at the Columbus Commons downtown then begin your cultural excursion at the Columbus Museum of Art , where you can peruse the galleries and stay for lunch at the museum's Schokko café.

Spend the afternoon at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, where you can experience every biome in the world in a single visit or take a glass-blowing class. Cap off the day with a Broadway performance at the historic Ohio Theatre .

A polar bear family at the Columbus Zoo

Day 2 Things to Do: With added time in your itinerary, spend your next day exploring the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium . If it is summertime, you can also enjoy Zoombezi Bay water park, which is popular with families. The zoo is consistently ranked as one of the top in the United States, with exciting animal encounter exhibits and demonstrations throughout the sprawling grounds.

While a zoo visit will take up most of the day, you can leave time to explore some of the nearby suburbs, which have great parks and social areas, like Ballantrae Park in Dublin , or stop by a farmers market in historic downtown Powell .

Another full-day excursion that you can plan is at the Ohio History Center and Ohio Village , which are both located in the same complex. The Ohio Village is an outdoor living history museum designed to look like a late 1800s village. There are special events at the village throughout the year, but it is fun to visit anytime.

If you are lucky, you might catch the Ohio Village Muffins baseball team in action in vintage uniforms and playing by the rules of the game from the late 19 th century. The Ohio History Center located next to the village has several floors of indoor exhibits about Ohio history.

Where to Eat: A great way to wrap up your day is with dinner at one of the sure-to-satisfy-hungry-appetites restaurants like Mikey's Late Night Slice, which is a pizza-craver's favorite downtown, or the Happy Greek, one of dozens of great restaurants in the Short North.

Stop at one of the Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams locations in town for an unforgettable dessert, like pistachio and honey ice-cream using all farm-sourced ingredients.

THREE-DAY ITINERARY

Easton Town Center

Day 1 & Day 2

If your visit to Columbus extends to three days, you will be able cover the best of the must-see attractions and food while working in some extra opportunities to enjoy the city. You can follow Day 1 and Day 2 itineraries as they suit your interests.

Day 3 Things to Do : Since you will likely cover the heart of downtown and possibly the fringe of the downtown area, Day 3 is your chance to explore the two premier shopping and entertainment complexes at Easton and Polaris. Both have expansive shopping opportunities in multi-level malls and adjacent outdoor shopping plazas.

Easton Town Center is east of downtown with more than 300 top retailers like Apple, Tiffany & Co., American Girl dolls, Nordstrom, and more. There is a 30-theater cinema with dine-in movie options, a comedy house, and outdoor concerts in the summer. Polaris Fashion Place is an indoor-outdoor shopping complex with more than 200 retailers and locally owned boutique stores with Ohio-made products. The Polaris area stretches beyond the main mall complex and down the street into satellite shopping centers. This area also has a Cabela's and IKEA.

If you are not in the shopping mood and looking for another all-day alternative you can enjoy the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in downtown. COSI is a main fixture along the riverfront and a popular attraction for families. It is a Columbus staple that features interactive and hands-on science education.

Take a ride on the High Wire Unicycle to test your fear of heights as you pedal along an 84-foot cable suspended two-stories in the air. Just outside of COSI on the Scioto River, you can take a guided kayak trip on the Scioto River in the summer, or head to nearby Scioto Audubon Metro Park to tackle the climbing wall and outdoor recreation area.

German Village offers popular dining options

Where to Eat: There are several local restaurants with a long history in Columbus that are must-trys if you have extra time in the city. Take on the Thurmanator Challenge at The Thurman Café in German Village.

Anyone who can finish the mammoth 12-ounce burger surrounded by a bun, mayo, lettuce, pickle, tomato, sautéed mushrooms, banana peppers, ham, onions, and cheese between the buns gets serious respect and bragging rights around town. While the Thurmanator Challenge is famous at the café, they also have delicious regular-sized burgers.

Another local favorite with a long history in Columbus is Dirty Frank's Hot Dog Palace . You dream up the dog-Dirty Frank's has it. You can choose from more than 50 a-la-carte toppings or put all 50 on your hot dog.

Even vegans can enjoy a wide menu at Dirty Frank's, as most items come in a vegetarian option. The restaurant is a fun visit beyond the delicious dogs, as there is a vibrant collection of pop art along the walls.

Exploring Columbus: If you plan to be in Columbus even longer, you may want to explore other areas of Ohio. There are attractions in Cleveland that can fill several days, or you can head south to explore the many sides of Cincinnati . If you are looking for a romantic getaway, head to Ohio's Amish Country and enjoy a more simplistic vacation. If you are after a quick weekend getaway , you might opt for activities in one of the state or national parks .

The 12 Best Things to Do in Columbus

travel to columbus ohio

Matt Kazmierski/Getty Images

Columbus , Ohio’s capital city, is filled with a level of energy and excitement even first-time visitors can feel it — and the city’s boom extends beyond its rapidly increasing population. With exploding scenes in the arts, fashion, music, and dining, Columbus’s many highlights are as amazing as they are unexpected.

Explore the Short North

 aceshot/Getty Images

Think of the Short North as Columbus’s Champs-Élysées. Named because it’s just north and just short of downtown, the fashionable neighborhood teems with art galleries, elegant boutiques, and restaurants to match every taste. Enjoy the glass, ceramics, or handmade jewelry at Sherrie Gallerie or the ever-changing displays of contemporary art at the Pizzuti Collection , then shuck oysters at The Pearl or savor a filet at Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse . But save room for dessert at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams , with treats so sweet they’ve developed a national cult following. On the first Saturday of each month, the sidewalks are packed for the Gallery Hop , with musicians and entertainers on hand to add to the fun.

Experience Haute Couture

After New York and Los Angeles, Columbus has the third highest number of people working in the fashion industry in the nation. Each October, Fashion Week Columbus features the couture of local and emerging designers in a weeklong series of events. Also in October, couture collides with camp in HighBall Halloween , a runway competition among local designers to top one another’s already over-the-top designs during a season when costume is king. The work of local designers can be found all-year-long in shops like Rowe Boutique , Ladybird , and Kiln Men’s Mercantile in the Short North.

Dine Internationally Across the City

Phillip Nelson/Getty Images

With vast farmlands surrounding the city, it’s not surprising Columbus has long been at the forefront of the farm to table movement, but what does surprise many visitors is the amount of international residents and ethnic eateries found in the city. One of the largest Somali communities in the country calls Columbus home with restaurants like Hoyo’s Kitchen offering unique cuisine like chicken suqaar and sambusas. Within a stone’s throw of Hoyo’s are Vietnamese and Brazilian restaurants and Middle Eastern and Asian groceries. For those with a sweet tooth, there’s even a Mexican pastry shop down the street. At the popular North Market, you can pick up waffles at Taste of Belgium , pierogies at Hubert’s Polish Kitchen , or Nepalese dumplings at Momo Ghar . If you want a hands-on sampling of the city, take the Alt Eats tour by Columbus Food Adventures .

Stroll Through German Village

Pistacia Vera

With its brick streets, Italianate-style cottages and charming streetscapes, German Village looks like it’s been directly transported from the Old World. The entire neighborhood, once the home of German immigrants, is now on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s best explored on foot, where one can serendipitously discover the little gems of shops interspersed through the residential areas. Among the most popular are the famed Book Loft , a true labyrinth with 32 rooms of bargain-priced books, Helen Winnemore’s , where many of its fine crafts are tucked away in drawers, or Hausfrau Haven , with its selection of wines and novelty items. Dining options include Schmidt’s Restaurant Und Sausage Haus , the Spanish-style tapas at Barcelona or the delicate macarons at Pistacia Vera . Be sure to save time for a stroll through verdant Schiller Park — can you find the Umbrella Girl Fountain?

Feel Patriotic at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum

National Veterans Memorial and Museum

Stirring stories abound at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, which opened in 2018. Take the story of Deborah Sampson, a woman who dressed as a man and fought in the Revolution for 17 months, or actor Jimmy Stewart, who was an accomplished fighter pilot during World War II, flying 20 missions over Europe. The nation’s only memorial to all veterans in all branches of service in the entirety of U.S. history, the museum illustrates the universal experiences all men and women in the armed forces have shared. With three concentric rings swooping upwards with a series of interlocking arches holding tall windows, the astounding structure was named by Architectural Digest as one of the most anticipated buildings in the world in 2018. A somber Remembrance Room and Memorial Grove outside remind visitors of those veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Go on Safari at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

Sean Reid/Getty Images

Thanks to its Director Emeritus “Jungle Jack” Hanna, the Columbus Zoo is one of the best-known in the nation. Themed areas take visitors on excursions to Africa, Australia, North America, and Asia. Popular family programming includes overnight experiences and behind-the-scenes excursions to the Giraffe Barns, Manatee Coast, and Discovery Reef. A VIP “Journey through the Heart of Africa” invites visitors to drive the zoo’s savanna among grazing gazelles and zebras, while visitors to Dinosaur Island experience dozens of animatronic dinos moving, blinking, vocalizing, and spraying water on passersby.

See a T. Rex Walking at COSI

It’s just a six-foot simulated skeleton of a T. Rex, but it is walking in place in the Dinosaur Gallery at Columbus's Center of Science and Industry, presented in partnership with the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Elsewhere, a huge 23-foot long Yutyrannus that’s covered with what appears to be porcupine quills illustrates the latest scientific theory that most dinosaurs sported feathers. The 300 other interactive exhibits are grouped by themes: Ocean, Energy Explorers, Space, Progress, Gadgets, and Life. A state-of-the-art planetarium and the largest movie screen in central Ohio feature revolving programming. Those who feel daring can ride the nation’s only high-wire unicycle.

Quench Your Thirst at Craft Distilleries and Breweries

Brothers Drake Meadery

More than 40 micro- and nano-breweries now operate in Central Ohio. A number of them can be found on the so-called Brewer’s Row, connected by the free CBUS Circulator bus. Be sure to get your Columbus Ale Trail passport stamped at each one! Another drinking destination is the Brewery District near German Village named to honor the huge breweries that operated there prior to Prohibition. Nowadays, newer establishments like Rockmill Tavern continue the tradition. Tours can be taken at Middle West Spirits , which produces artisanal vodkas, whiskeys, and gin using Ohio ingredients, while Brothers Drake Meadery , which produces mead from local honey, is a short stumbling distance away. Across town, Watershed Distillery has been producing gin since 2010 with vodka, bourbon, and apple brandy now part of the mix.

With a whopping 2.5 million comic strip clippings and 450,000 original cartoons, not to mention tens of thousands of books, magazines, and graphic novels, Billy Ireland is the largest research facility devoted to cartooning in the world. Scholars from all over the world travel to the facility, located on the campus of Ohio State University, to study the artform, while those who just want to see the comics they loved as children can enjoy them in the facility’s reading room. Rotating, themed exhibits are hung in the sizable galleries, and each October, Columbus becomes a mecca for practicing cartoonists and those who love their work at Cartoon Crossroads Columbus where speakers have included Art Spiegelman (“Maus”) and Garry Trudeau (“Doonesbury”).

The unique interactive art piece, As We Are, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, allows each visitor to make a lasting image of themselves that will remain behind long after they’ve left. When they step outside, they’ll see their own images displayed on the giant sculpture, which will disappear and then reappear in a rotation with the hundreds of other images stored in the sculpture’s database.

9 Fantastic Things To Do In Columbus, Ohio

travel to columbus ohio

  • Destinations
  • United States

Located in central Ohio and known for its major sports powerhouse university, Ohio State, Columbus is so much more than a university town. Growing up in Cleveland , another one of the tri-Cs that include Cincinnati , I have always known Columbus, albeit more as the state’s capital city surrounded by sleepy farmland.

While there are still cows grazing and corn growing outside the metropolis, Columbus has become a hub of culture, cuisine , and creativity that make this college-centric town a magnet for technology, insurance, and retail corporate headquarters. Suburbs have grown up around the city that both hipsters and families call home, and the area has been proactive in rehabilitating destitute or dangerous urban areas into trendy centers for living, dining, and drinking emerging craft beers and spirits. Franklinton is one of these newly discovered art and culture centers and features a more edgy, urban, and industrial arts vibe and is home to breweries and distilleries.

Columbus truly has something for everyone including world-class museums, hip boutique hotels, food halls that promote incubator businesses, and plenty of parks, trails, and outdoor activities . I had the opportunity to revisit the city as a travel writer and was thrilled with what I found and can’t wait to discover even more.

The gardens in the German Village area of Columbus, Ohio.

1. The German Village Neighborhood

As the name implies, German Village is the area where the German community settled in Columbus in the mid-1800s, and the beautifully restored brick brownstones they built on pleasant cobblestone streets scream charm. German Village is one of the most popular destinations both to live and visit in Columbus. A walking tour is a necessity here as there is a surprise around every corner in this section of the city where the entire area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Schmidt's Sausage Haus in German Village, Columbus.

German food is on the menu in many pubs that serve local craft German-style beers like at Schmidt’s Restaurant and Sausage Haus , located in a historic livery stable. Lots of live music can be found here as well. The cuisine is not limited to Wiener schnitzel and brats in German Village. Popular haunts include Columbus-based Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams and Pistacia Vera . Barcelona specializes in tapas and paella and has a lively outside patio. Looking for breakfast? Skillet is the hot spot in German Village. The Kitchen is an interactive events space where not only will you dine well, but also participate in the cooking.

The Book Loft of German Village is the major retail destination with its endless rooms of new and used books — 32 in all — making it one of the largest independent booksellers in the country.

2. Short North Arts And Culture Neighborhood

This now-thriving area near downtown and Ohio State University is a hub of art in all of its forms, creative culinary incubators, and the best that Columbus has to offer. Short North runs along Columbus’s High Street from Spring Street to 10th Street, with the majority of the Arts District found from 2nd Ave. and above.

Short North’s galleries galore provide entertainment and talent no matter what your preferred form of art may be. On the first Saturday of every month, there is a daytime gallery hop open to kids and dogs alike with demonstrations and plenty of food opportunities. While live music abounds every day, musicians line the streets in greater numbers during Gallery Hop.

Dining here is a phenomenon with the Short North Market Food Hall , plenty of diverse offerings, and fine dining like The Guild House , Pearl , and Lincoln Social Rooftop Lounge . Plenty of locally produced drinks and craft beers from hyperlocal Short North and North High Street Breweries mean you won’t go thirsty. A bus makes the rounds up and down High Street, so park once and enjoy it all.

Even the side of the 11-story Graduate Hotel is an opulent statement to the arts vibe in Columbus. The largest augmented reality mural in the world, called “The Journey,” wraps this hip hotel, making staying there feel like sleeping in a museum.

Aluminum sculpture, Karnak in the sculpture garden of the Columbus Museum of Art.

3. Columbus Museum Of Art

The first art museum in the state of Ohio, the Columbus Museum of Art has been the standard-bearer since 1878. Not only does the museum house an array of 18th- and 19th-century masterworks, but it pays tribute to folk and native art that reflects the Ohio Valley.

The museum features traditional and contemporary art as well as exhibits that pay tribute to single artists like the “Raggin’ On” collection by primitive artist Aminah Robinson and “Thinking Outside the Bricks,” an architectural exhibit. Coming soon is a comprehensive Van Gogh exhibit.

Wexner Center for the Arts on the campus of The Ohio State University.

4. Wexner Center For The Arts

Les Wexner is a big name in Columbus. He is also an art collector, so it is not a stretch for Wexner to support a museum after his success with retail brands like Gap, Banana Republic, and Victoria’s Secret (he is also connected to Jeffrey Epstein, though Columbus focuses on his local contributions).

On the Ohio State University campus, the Wexner Center is a multi-faceted arts institute with culturally-astute exhibitions like “Climate Changing: On Artists, Institutions and the Social Environment,” film and video presentations, and live performing arts.

The Franklin Park Conservatory located in Columbus, Ohio.

5. Franklin Park Conservatory And Botanical Gardens

A caveat for those who couldn’t care less about gardens: this is about Chihuly glass, and the largest display of the glass master’s art in a botanical garden can be found right here. My daughter saw it when she was about age 20 and she is still talking about it … and she has seen the Chihuly installation in Vegas’s Bellagio Hotel.

Featuring 88 acres of botanical gardens with an emphasis on seasonal displays, bonsai, and the sponsored Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation Children’s Garden, this world-class collection of over 400 plant types has something for everyone. There are also classes and special events regularly.

6. Billy Ireland Cartoon Museum And Library

The Billy Ireland Cartoon Museum And Library is home to the world’s largest collection of materials related to cartoons and comics. It’s on Ohio State’s campus, so it is easy to combine with a trip to The Wex . Plus, it’s free!

Browse the cartoons of your childhood as well as the biting political satire that cartoonists do so well. Exhibits change, but currently include “Into the Swamp: The Social and Political Satire of Walt Kelly’s POGO,” a collection with cartoons featuring dogs, and a permanent exhibit called “Treasures from the Collections of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum.”

National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus, Ohio.

7. National Veterans Memorial And Museum

Only a few years old, this museum dedicated to our veterans of all wars is a fascinating place to both revisit wartime memories and learn for the first time about wars affecting the United States.

Well-done and interactive, the National Veterans Memorial and Museum brings to life the living conditions during wartime, the experiences of war, the emotions of those who were away, and the heartbreak for those they left at home.

8. The Neighborhood Of Worthington

This strip of Colonial architecture is the center of a popular suburb of Columbus. Worthington has somehow managed to combine a town center with necessary local businesses and hyperlocal incubator businesses that are a surprise and delight.

I first bought a bag from Branch Line Leather when I visited on a press trip a few years ago. I have been back many times and have even phone ordered these truly special, custom items. You choose the bag style and the leather hide you want it made from. A few weeks later, it arrives at your door. You can also buy one premade and pair it with wallets, key chains, leather bracelets, and other jewelry. Candle Lab , where you make your own candle to the scent you desire, is down the street as is Igloo Letterpress , a true old-fashioned creator of posters and stationery with that raised graphic look that is impossible to find these days.

9. Columbus Hotels That Hit Above Their Weight Class

In addition to the Graduate Hotel mentioned above, the following hotels have standards that set them apart in this inspirational city of culture and cuisine.

  • Hotel LeVeque : New and elegant, this fabulous, celestial-inspired Autograph Collection hotel has set a new standard for Columbus hotels. The easy walk to the Franklinton Industrial Arts area is across the Scioto River.
  • Canopy by Hilton Columbus : This hotel associated with Goodale Station opened mid-2019 and is located downtown within walking distance to Arena District, Short North, and with easy highway access.
  • Le Meridien Columbus, The Joseph : Immerse yourself in art at this boutique property in the heart of the Short North Arts District. Use your room key to gain free access to the nearby Pizzuti Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art.

This Midwestern gem of a city is worth a go. When you book flights to Columbus, you’re getting much more than railroads and the Eerie Canal (although you get those too, don’t worry). This town, once a shipping port, is now full of arts, sports, leisure, education, and shopping.

Incorporated in 1816, Columbus started out as a pretty serious factory town. With more than 200 of these industrial establishments pumping, the area became fluent in business, and German immigrants with business plans began to set up shop as brewers. A hundred years passed this way, with more and more business constantly fitting inside the city’s boundaries, so in the 1980’s, it was begging for a little renovation. Now, the Arena District exists as a mixed-use planned urban environment with restaurants, hotels, shops, and offices. New brick buildings now stand where old warehouses once did. Some of the old industrial architecture still stands, adding historical flavor to the fresh look of new Columbus.

When you book flights to Columbus, expect the typical Midwest seasonal pattern. The climate here is strongly affected by Lake Eerie, and gets great heat waves in the summers. Winters are much milder than other northern cities, so while you should pack warm clothing, there’s no need to worry about harsh or dangerous snow storms. Spring and fall months are mild and sunny, with occasional rain showers.

If you’re looking to really enjoy the city on foot, then book flights to Columbus in the summer, when the temperatures are mild, and rain showers are infrequent. Pack light clothing and sunglasses and hit the road.

Peak Season

The best time to plan flights to Columbus is undoubtedly during the summer, because the weather creates perfect conditions for exploring the city, and no one can resist a sunny day.

Off-peak Season

Winter here isn’t exactly nasty, or particularly stormy, but it’s nothing to write home about. Temperatures plummet to below freezing and drizzle and rainfall are consistent.

Columbus doesn’t have much public transportation, but it’s very easy to get around by car. You can rent a car at one of the companies found at the airport. You’ll find that most hotels provide transportation from the airport. You can find taxis, but not as easily as you could in larger cities.

Columbus Museum of Art: While you might not find a village-y Soho scene when you step off your flight to Columbus, you can breathe easy knowing that artistic culture does live here, you just need to look for it a little. The Columbus Museum of Art boasts a wide collection of impressionists, cubists, modernists, and contemporary artists from North America and Europe. Pros like Degas, Monet, Matisse, Picasso, Hopper, and O’Keeffe all play nice together. When you’re done here, stroll over to the Russell Page Sculpture Garden, or the Ross Photography Center to get more a specialized experience.

Jack Nicklaus Museum: If you’re not packing the clubs on your flight to Columbus, don’t worry, you can still fit a little love for the game in on your trip. Golfer, golf course designer, family man, and Columbus native, Jack Nicklaus is honored at the (aptly named) Jack Nicklaus Museum. Interactive exhibits are fun and interesting, and an impressive collection of memorabilia chronicles his playing career highlights. Actor and legend Sean Connery narrates some of the audio tour.

King Arts Complex: Break out your easels, kiddos. While you might board your Columbus flight unknowing of its artistic opportunity, once you get there, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. In memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior, the King Arts Complex exists to aid cultural and educational programs. Three performance areas, two dance studios, an art gallery, and three interactive arcades work together to make an open area for learning. As you stroll through the complex, keep in mind that legend Duke Ellington played here in 1925, when it was a nightclub called the Pythian Temple.

Columbus Alive Magazine: If you’re planning flights to Columbus for a business trip, and ache to shake that four-hour meeting you just came from, then pick up Columbus Alive Magazine, which will tell you where to find the reddest Shiraz, the tallest burgers, and the best dressed establishments in town. Specializing in nightlife, music, arts, and local celebrity interviews, this little publication is the key to your post-briefcase blues. So trade your pant suit for your jeans and hit the town.

Check out these 10 cool events in Columbus and central Ohio this weekend

Portrait of Belinda M. Paschal

The Ohio State Fair arrived this week and while it offers a multitude of attractions, it's not the only game in town. However, if you are heading to the fair, it bears mentioning that Founders Day at nearby Ohio Village is Thursday and fairgoers can present their tickets for free admission to join in celebrating the village's 50th anniversary!

On the theater stage, Weathervane Playhouse takes on "The Addams Family" in musical style and the Actors' Theatre of Columbus production of "Twelfth Night" comically reinforces Shakespeare's claim that the course of true love never did run smooth. (Yes, we're aware that quote is from a different play!)

Buckeyes fans won't want to miss the Columbus Symphony and The Ohio State University Marching Band ending the Nationwide Picnic with the Pops concert series with a bang on Friday and Saturday at Columbus Commons.

These events and several others below can keep you entertained when you're not looking down on the fairgrounds from the Sky Glider or gawking at the butter cow display. To have these ideas delivered to your inbox each week, sign up for the  Life in the 614 newsletter .

Ohio Village to mark 50 years at Founders Day celebration

If you're at the Ohio State Fair on Thursday, stop over at Ohio Village, 800 E. 17th Ave., to celebrate Founders Day with music and family-friendly fun honoring the village's opening on July 27, 1974.

The site will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering concerts at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., vintage "base ball" games between the Ohio Village Muffins and visiting teams at noon, 1:30 and 3 p.m., vaudeville acts and more. Guests are welcome to bring blankets and chairs.

The event is included with Ohio State Fair admission, which is $12 for ages 13-59; $10 for 60 and older and ages 6-12; free for ages 5 and younger and Ohio History Connection members. Those who wish to use fair tickets can enter through the Ohio History Center museum.

Admission to Ohio Village also is included with regular admission to the Ohio History Center, which costs $16 for ages 13-59; $14 for 60 and older and college students with ID; $10 for ages 4-12; free for ages 3 and younger and Ohio History Connection members. Weathervane to scare up laughs with 'Addams Family' musical

Wednesday Addams is all grown up and she's head over heels in love with a most un-Addams-like young man. He's smart, sweet and from a respectable family — in other words, he's "normal." Can her decidedly "ooky" tribe tone down their weirdness for one night to meet Wednesday's boyfriend and his parents?

Find out when "The Addams Family: A New Musical" opens at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Weathervane Playhouse, 100 Price Road, Newark. Other performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday, as well as 7:30 p.m. July 30-Aug. 3. Doors open 30 minutes before each show.

Tickets are $36, except on July 30, when the price is $18. ( weathervaneplayhouse.org )

Love triangle comes full circle in Actors' Theatre's 'Twelfth Night'

In William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night," a love triangle takes many twists and turns: Orsino is in love with Olivia, who is in love with Cesario, who is really a disguised Viola, who is in love with Orsino. To complicate the already topsy-turvy situation, Sir Andrew Aguecheek is also in love with Olivia!

Shenanigans ensue in the wild comedy being staged by the Actors' Theatre of Columbus at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays through Aug. 11 at Schiller Park Amphitheatre, 100 City Park Ave.

Admission is free, with donations accepted at intermission. Reserve a blanket or chair in advance: Zero-gravity reclining chairs are $25, blankets are $25, lawn-level lounge chairs are $20. ( theactorstheatre.org )

Symphony and TBDBITL to unite for Picnic with the Pops finale

Led by Columbus Symphony Orchestra Principal Pops Conductor Stuart Chafetz and Dr. Christopher Hoch, the Ohio State University Marching Band will salute the Buckeyes and the upcoming season with a selection of fans' favorite fight songs and battle cries. Fireworks will cap off the evening.

General-admission lawn seating is $35 for ages 13 and older and $10 for ages 3-12, plus applicable fees. Children 2 and younger are admitted free. Table seating prices begin at $484. Tech outage affects central Ohio businesses, travel

by WSYX Staff

John Glenn International Airport was affected by the outage, causing long lines and wait times as some flights were grounded due to system issues. July 19, 2024 (WSYX){p}{/p}

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Central Ohio, as well as other parts of the world, has been affected by a technology outage Friday morning.

All Columbus government resource websites are currently down (fire departments, police departments, etc.), as well as certain Ohio medical websites (such as the Wexner Medical Center website).

Certain courts are having to change operations due to system issues. The Franklin County Domestic Relations and Juvenile Court will be closed all day on Friday, and the Franklin County Municipal Court will close its doors at noon.

John Glenn International Airport was affected by the outage, causing long lines and wait times as some flights were grounded due to system issues.

ABC 6 News has reached out to individual airlines to see how the outage has impacted their operations. We have received the following responses from those airlines:

“All Delta flights are paused as we work through a vendor technology issue. Any customers whose flights are impacted will be notified by Delta via the Fly Delta app and text message. Customers should use the Fly Delta app for updates. We apologize for the inconvenience as our teams work through this issue. Reports indicated that other airlines may also be impacted.” -- Delta spokesperson

A third-party software outage impacted computer systems worldwide, including at United. We are resuming some flights but expect schedule disruptions to continue throughout Friday. We have issued a waiver to make it easier for customers to change their travel plans via United.com or the United app." -- United Airlines media relations

“Earlier this morning, a technical issue with a vendor impacted multiple carriers, including American. As of 5 a.m. ET, we have been able to safely re-establish our operation. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.” -- American Airlines

The Columbus Regional Airport Authority gave ABC 6 news the following statement on the ongoing outage:

We encourage passengers to stay up-to-date with their airline for the latest flight information. CRAA’s team is stands ready once this issue is resolved to help get the airlines and passengers moving."

Ohio State University is also having technical difficulties, with their IT team posting on X:

This story will be updated as more information becomes available about the outage, and how it is affecting central Ohioans.

While service is slowly recovering, flights are still being canceled and delays can stretch for hours. Here’s the latest on airlines, airports and cruises, as well as your rights and how to reach customer service.

A man in a white T-shirt standing on a balcony looks down watching hundreds of airline passengers waiting in line

While commercial air service was slowly recovering on Friday after a technology outage caused thousands of flights worldwide to be canceled or delayed, the ripple effect from the disruption left airports crowded with passengers and airlines working to get planes and crews back in position.

“These flights, they run so tightly, so back to back, that even after a root cause is addressed, you can still be feeling those impacts throughout the day,” said Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary, in an appearance on CNBC.

The outage was caused by a flawed update from the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, whose software is widely used around the world. At United Airlines, for example, the outage affected technology used to calculate aircraft weight, check in customers and operate call-center phone systems.

Throughout Friday, messages that travelers posted on social media showed flights grounded worldwide, some terminal monitors down and crowds of stranded passengers waiting at airport gates and customer service desks. At airports in India and South Korea, some passengers stood in long lines to obtain handwritten boarding passes .

Are flights still grounded?

Since the initial outage, service is slowly resuming, but the number of global delays and cancellations has continued to increase throughout the day.

Worldwide, around 110,000 commercial flights were scheduled on Friday, and around 5,117 of those flights, or 4.6 percent, have been canceled, according to Cirium, an aviation data company. In the United States, the number of cancellations stood at more than 2,300 — or about 9 percent of daily flights — as of Friday afternoon.

Fewer than half of the flights today in the United States left on time, the others departing with delays of a half-hour or longer, according to Cirium.

Delays at some airports in the United States were well beyond an hour, according to data from the Federal Aviation Administration. The average delays at Kennedy International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, the world’s busiest airport, were nearly three hours.

Which airlines are most affected?

In the United States, at least five carriers — Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Spirit Airlines and United — temporarily grounded flights, according to the F.A.A .

As of about 4 p.m. Eastern, more than 830 Delta flights had been canceled, and more than 1,220 had been delayed. American was reporting more than 360 flights canceled and more than 1,040 delayed. More than 380 United flights had been canceled and more than 1,260 were delayed, according to FlightAware.

The Dutch airline KLM canceled around 41 percent of flights on Friday, according to FlightAware. It has begun to recover, but advises passengers to check their flight status online before traveling. “We urge passengers not to come to the airport if their flight is not departing or is severely delayed,” the airline said in a statement.

Why weren’t some airlines, like Southwest, affected?

Southwest, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue Airways barely scrapped any flights on Friday. A spokesperson for Southwest said, “The outage did not directly affect our operations,” but did not elaborate on why.

Alaska does not use CrowdStrike, and its operations were “mostly unimpacted,” said Tricia Bruckbauer, a spokeswoman for the airline.

Which airports have been hit the worst?

In the United States, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta appeared to have the most flights affected by the outage, with a total of more than 590 incoming and outgoing flights canceled and more than 780 flights delayed as of midafternoon on Friday, according to FlightAware .

Many other airports, including hubs in New York, Chicago and Charlotte, N.C., also appeared to experience significant disruption. J.F.K. advised passengers not to show up to the airport without confirming flight status.

The outage also affected major airports in Europe. Several airlines at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam were unable to gain access to their check-in systems. The systems have since restarted, and the airport said it was working with airlines to “get all passengers to their destinations as quickly as possible.”

London’s busiest airports, Heathrow and Gatwick, said they were using contingency systems to get around the outage, but both were still reporting delays for almost half of their incoming and outgoing scheduled flights.

Hong Kong International Airport had to switch to manual check-in, but the airport reported that flight operations were not affected .

I’m flying today. What can I do?

Pack patience.

Delta , United , American , and Spirit have issued flight waivers allowing passengers to rebook without any additional fees. The terms and applicable airports vary. Generally, passengers are required to depart within a week.

Travelers can usually check itineraries through the airline’s website or app, but some travelers on Friday reported difficulties rebooking through the Delta and United apps.

You can also contact airline customer service by phone, though travelers posting on social media said that they had not been able to reach agents. But there are a few tricks you can try aside from the primary hotline: U.S. airlines have overseas customer service phone lines, easily found on the internet, and those agents can help too.

FlightAware can offer detailed data about delays and cancellations, and which airports are most affected, in real time.

What are my rights if my flight is delayed or canceled?

You may be entitled to certain compensation — such as airline-provided hotel or meal vouchers — detailed on the Transportation Department’s Airline Customer Service Dashboard .

The Transportation Department said the software outage is considered within airlines’ control and that airlines must follow through on their commitments to travelers, which for most United States-based carriers include complimentary ground transportation and accommodation for those affected by overnight delays and cancellations, as well as meal vouchers for waits exceeding three hours. Travelers should not expect to have this compensation offered to them, but are within their rights to ask the airlines for it.

“We have reminded the airlines of their responsibilities to take care of passengers if they experience major delays,” Mr. Buttigieg said in his CNBC appearance on Friday.

Passengers’ rights can differ for international flights . For example, in the European Union, cancellations or long delays may give you the right to a refund, a replacement flight and financial compensation. Passengers on flights delayed overnight may receive reimbursement for food, accommodations and ground transportation. (Travelers should hold on to any receipts for costs incurred.)

I have a cruise to catch. Will I get a refund if I miss the ship?

Cruise lines typically do not provide refunds, rebooking or any other concessions if flight disruptions cause travelers to miss their cruise departure, and the large companies are not making exceptions now.

But things look brighter for Carnival and Royal Caribbean passengers who booked their airfare through the cruise lines. Should they miss their departure, those travelers can expect benefits including coverage for flights, hotels and ground transportation to get them to the next port of call.

“Regrettably, air service disruptions — whether technological or weather — are beyond our company’s control,” said Chris Chiames, the chief communication officer for Carnival. “We always encourage our guests to purchase travel insurance, and today’s news is an important reminder of why.”

I have travel insurance. Am I covered?

Travel insurance companies are expecting an influx of claims, mostly for delays and missed connections, as a result of the outage.

One agency, InsureMyTrip , anticipated more than 1,600 of its customers could be affected by the outage, said Suzanne Morrow, the company’s chief executive. Policyholders may be entitled to coverage for their expenses related to delays, as well as coverage for any missed connecting flights, she said.

Any travelers hoping to file a travel insurance claim related to the outage should make sure to keep all their receipts or bills to show proof of purchase, as well as check their insurance plan or policy and file a claim right away.
