A self-guided Heartland tour

See Heartland in Person

With the craggy peaks of the Rocky Mountains on the horizon and legit ranching country minutes from the city limits, it’s no wonder so many iconic films and TV series have been filmed in and around Calgary.

Take Heartland, for example. It’s a series that follows the highs and lows of a ranching family, and is now one of the CBC’s longest running TV shows. Heartland is filmed not only on a studio set in Calgary, but at several venues less than an hour’s drive away. If you’re a fan of this family drama, it’s a cinch to follow in your favourite character’s footsteps.

Here’s a self-guided tour that’s easily done as a day trip from Calgary.

Hudson is actually High River

When Heartland films from May until early December, High River , a sweet little community about a 30-minute drive south of Calgary, transforms into the made-for-TV town of Hudson. Disclosure: I grew up in High River, so I may be tad biased. After all, it is the best small town in Southern Alberta (read this article on my blog for proof!).

It’s best for Heartland fans to begin their Hudson, I mean High River experience, at the Museum of the Highwood . The town’s Visitor Information Centre is located inside, and these employees always seem to have the scoop on filming. Trust me, you’ll want to chat them up for Heartland juice. They’ll have it, plus tips on what else to see and do around town.

Insider tip: Heartland parks the crew trailers right behind the museum, so you’ll be able to tell at a glance if they’re filming that day. If they are, be sure to hang around for a spell, so you can spot the actors going to and from set. What’s more, this museum, housed inside a historic Canadian Pacific Railway station, has its own Heartland exhibit. As a nod to the other movies and TV shows filmed in the area, they also have props from The Revenant, Unforgiven, and Fargo .

Museum of the Highwood

Museum of the Highwood in High River Alberta.

Back to Heartland, you’ll be able to view several costumes worn by the actors and props such as the detailed doll’s house given to Roy’s daughter, Katie, in Season 7. There’s also a test your Heartland knowledge quiz and an actual Maggie’s Diner menu. This is the spot to snap up Heartland souvenirs such as baseball hats, journals, tree ornaments, and wrist cuffs.

For more Heartland mementos, Walkers General Store  (situated one block behind the Museum) carries official Heartland hoodies and T-shirts. Amber Marshall, the actor who plays Amy, has her own Life & Style Magazine , plus calendars that are also sold here. Another spot for merch is found at Olive & Finch on 3rd Avenue. Here, you’ll find trendy Hudson T-shirts and Heartland branded iPhone cases. Best of all, this gift shop is conveniently located smack dab between the most notable Heartland sets.

Yep, saunter down 3rd Avenue, and you’ll feel like you’re stepping right into the fictional town of Hudson. It may seem as though the entire street is one giant set, but rest assured, there are several indie shops open for business that are worth popping into.

The big deal on 3rd Avenue, however, is Maggie’s Diner . Sadly, we civilians can’t pop into Maggie’s for a slice of pie and a cup of joe, though it looks like a fully kitted out cafe. Peering through the windows, you’ll notice just how intricate the set design is.

Beside Maggie’s Diner is Bartling and Sons Mercantile and Hudson’s Antique Mall. A few doors down, you’ll spot Van Born Travel Agency (such a pretty storefront, you’ll want to take a selfie here) and across the street is the Hudson Times. For fun, pick up a copy of the real life High River Times to see what a small town newspaper reads like. It’s free.

One block over, all of 4th Avenue was the stage for the cattle drive back in Season 4. That’s when Tim drives Jack’s stolen cattle up to the RCMP detachment (which, by the way, is located on the opposite side of town in real life). And 4th Avenue is probably where you’ll find the best coffee shop in town: Colossi’s Coffee . If you were going for an authentic Heartland tour, you’d order your coffee straight up black, but then you’d be missing out. Colossi’s makes their own caramel and vanilla syrups, so getting a fancy barista-style bevvie is the way to go.

Outside, one of Colossi’s exterior walls is a chalkboard. They supply the chalk, and a sign encourages visitors to “espresso” themselves. Go ahead and mark it up, then turn around and admire the wall mural of Fort Spitzee by Terry Winter. Fun fact: There are lovely murals all over High River depicting early pioneering life.

Right next door to Colossi’s sits Evelyn’s Memory Lane . So much is made from scratch here, from their ice cream (go local with the Medicine Tree, a vanilla base with pralines, butterscotch and chocolate swirls) to their bread to mile-high pies. I’m partial to the loaded Hutterite chicken sandwich, but really, you can’t go wrong with any of the meals served up at this retro diner.

Evelyn’s Memory Lane is the real life Maggie’s Diner.

No visit to High River is complete without a stroll and perhaps a play at George Lane Park . Not only did yours truly have her high school graduation ceremony here, but Amy did too. Remember when Ty rode his motorcycle up on stage during the ceremony? Well, that all went down at the red gazebo in leafy George Lane Park. Perhaps the town’s hidden jewel is that this park sports a campsite, which is so lovely, it was recently awarded Campground of the Year by Southwest Service & Tourism. Camp here from May 1 until September 30.

The street leading into the park is 5th Avenue and at the end of the street - across from the historic Wales Theatre - lies the High River Motor Hotel. This classic small town motel is in a few episodes and you may also recall it from the movie Fubar. Spoiler alert: It’s just as sketch in real life as it appears on the big screen. This isn’t a place you want to be caught coming out of, but it does make for some fun photos.

Back on the ranch

Though High River is used as a location a fair bit, much of Heartland’s filming takes place at a working ranch west of Millarville. Sadly, nobody will disclose the exact location of this private ranch (where the homestead scenes are shot). But, I did receive one awesome tip about that ranch when I took a trail ride. Be sure to read the next section for details on that.

Luckily, there’s still plenty of filming locations close to Calgary and accessible to the public for fans to suss out. Lou’s Season 3 wedding took place at the Millarville Anglican Church. It’s a beautiful wooden chapel on Highway 549, just minutes away from the Millarville Farmer’s Market and Race Track . Whenever you see scenes with green and white horse stables, rodeo or horse racing, you’ll know they’ve been filmed at that Millarville Track.

Saturdays from mid-June until early October are when you want to visit, as that’s when the Millarville Farmer’s Market takes place. There are seriously over 100 vendor stalls to peruse, and you can skulk around the track reliving your favourite racing episodes.

Back in the saddle

Because Heartland is all about the horses, you can’t really experience this show first hand without getting in the saddle, now can you? Anchor D Outfitting offers trail rides and cabin rentals deep in the heart of cowboy country. This ranch is located just off picturesque Highway 22, AKA The Cowboy Trail, less than hour’s drive from downtown Calgary.

Trail rides run every day, twice a day and children as young as six-years-old can ride. Even if you’re not into horseback riding, it’s worth stopping by to meet real legit cowboys if you’ve never had the pleasure. Owner, Dewey Matthews with his leather chaps and a handlebar moustache that rivals Heartland’s grandpa Jack’s is easy to spot. And there’s always wranglers exercising the horses, who are happy to stop for a chat and a photo if you ask nicely.

Wranglers at Anchor D Outfitting.

Trail rides are an easy introduction into the cowboy way of life. More importantly, you’ll gain an appreciation for just how talented those Heartland actors truly are. Imagine having to look fit and attractive all the time, memorize lines and be an accomplished equestrian! It’s no short order.

If you’re a super fan, ask for the John Ware ride, as that trail overlooks the general area and background scenery from the show. All horse rides amble through the bucolic countryside, where cattle graze between copses of trees and the scent of spruce is ever present. You’ll likely head into Kananaskis County , moseying your way along a ridge which delivers sweeping views of the Rocky Mountains.

Yep, these are the very same vistas you watch in pretty much every Heartland episode. By trotting through this countryside and strolling down the streets of High River, you’ll have hit every public Heartland filming location. When you see these sites firsthand, there’s a shift from being a viewer to feeling like you’re actually a part of the series. Take this as your cue to place yourself in the scene.

Immerse yourself in the world behind the Canadian TV series, Heartland, as we unveil its scenic filming locations.

The show is set on a picturesque ranch in Canada that features beautiful horses and scenery. From scenic vistas to charming local spots, Heartland’s unique filming locations help to create its immersive and authentic feel.

These are not studio backdrops, but real-life locales nestled in the heart of Alberta, Canada. This article will guide you through the series’ most iconic filming locations, unveiling the beautiful truth behind Heartland’s on-screen magic.

Where is Heartland Filmed?

Heartland is filmed in Alberta, Canada. Most of the exterior shots are filmed in Millarville, a small town near High River. The interior shots are filmed in Calgary.

In 1928, Roy Foster and his family moved to the property where they raised cattle. The famous barn that is seen on the show was built by Roy’s brother, Les.

The show also films ranch scenes at a dude ranch, which is not far from the real Heartland Ranch, and a studio in Calgary.

Can You go to Heartland Ranch?

Unfortunately, you can’t visit the real Heartland Ranch because it is privately owned, and the owner doesn’t give anyone apart from the cast and crew during filming.

However, you can see the ranch from a distance, and fans are allowed to visit the outside of Maggie’s diner in High River and peer in to see the set.

Fans may also visit the  Museum of the Highwood , which includes costumes and props from the show. If you are lucky, you may even get to catch a glimpse of the crew’s trailers as they park behind the museum when filming.

The show is set in the fictional town of Hudson, but it is actually filmed in and around High River. High River is a great place to visit if you are a fan of Heartland. There are several businesses in town that cater to Heartland fans, and you can even take a tour of the ranch where the show is filmed.

High River is a great place to visit if you are a fan of the show. In addition to the museum and Maggie’s diner, you can also stroll through the town to visit shops that sell Heartland mementos.

If you’re in High River, don’t forget to take a stroll in George Lane Memorial Park. Here, you will find the famous red gazebo that hosted Amy and Georgie’s high school graduation.

Here is a Heartland set tour with Amber Marshall (Amy Fleming) and Graham Wardle (Ty Borden):

Are There Heartland Ranch Tours?

Though there are no guided tours for the Heartland Ranch, but you can take self-guided tours through High River. In addition, there are ranches just outside of Calgary that offer trail rides throughout beautiful scenery.

Did you know that all indoor scenes on Heartland Ranch and Scott’s clinic are filmed in a studio in Calgary? These include the interiors of the farmhouse, the barn, the loft, and the vet clinic.

Besides Heartland Ranch, there are other filming locations in Millarville fans might want to visit. For once, there is the cute little wooden chapel where Lou’s wedding ceremony took place. To find it, look for signs to the Millarville Anglican Church.

The Millarville Farmers’ Market and Race Track are also open to visitors all year round. This location served as the setting for all rodeo and horse racing-related scenes. The Farmer’s Market is the best in the foothills and opens every Saturday from June to October.

See more information about Heartland self-guided tours here on foothillstourism.com .

Where is Dude Ranch Located?

The Heartland Dude Ranch can be found south of the Priddis community in Alberta, along Range Road 30. It’s not far from the real Heartland ranch in Millarville, but unfortunately, it’s also private property.

Is Maggie’s Diner from Heartland Real?

Maggie’s Diner, Tack and Feed is filmed on a real set and is the only permanently accessible set that fans can visit.

Although Maggie’s is not a real working diner, fans are allowed to peer through the windows and see the set when the show isn’t filming there.

Maggie's Diner restaurant set on Heartand

You can also visit a real-life version of Maggie’s in High River called Evelyn’s Memory Lane. This retro diner is located on 4th Avenue, and it’s one of the best places for food in the area.

Do All the Actors on Heartland Ride Horses?

Surprisingly, horse riding is not a requirement for getting a role on Heartland . Since many actors didn’t have prior experience with horses, they had to attend cowboy camp to learn the basics.

Amber Marshall and Alisha Newton are real-life equestrians and do most of their horseback riding scenes on Heartland. However, the actors are replaced with stunt doubles who ride for them in the more dangerous riding scenes.

Jessica Amlee, who plays Mallory on Heartland , was also a confident rider before coming on the show. Shaun Johnston (Grandpa Jack) and Nathaniel Arcand (Scott Cardinal) both grew up on a farm with horses and were happy to ride for the show.

Who Owns the Horses on Heartland?

John Scott owns most of the horses that are used in Heartland. Scott is the head wrangler of the show and is well known in the film industry.

With over 50 years of experience training animals for movies, this man has done it all. John Scott has been wrangler on major productions like Lord of the Rings , The Revenant , Unforgiven, and many others.

Scott is a widely celebrated actor, stuntman, wrangler, and producer. According to Avenue Calgary magazine , his company John Scott Productions has worked on seven Oscar-winning films to date.

Scott keeps his stunt horses and props on his Longview farm in Alberta, which also serves as a filming location. The legendary wrangler’s journey to success has been documented in True West: The John Scott Story .

Is Heartland Based on a True Story?

The Heartland Ranch TV show is not a true story but rather based on the Heartland novel series created by Lauren Brooke. Although the show is fictional, Lauren Brooke confirmed in an interview that her real-life inspires aspects of the show.

Where is ‘Heartland’ Filmed? Top Filming Locations

Where to stream:.

Netflix is currently streaming fourteen seasons of the Canadian family drama series Heartland , a show that’s set against the gorgeous backdrop of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. (A fifteenth season of the show has already aired on CBC in Canada, but we still have some time before it makes its way to Netflix.)

The series, which is the longest-running Canadian drama series on television, takes place in the fictional town of Hudson, Alberta and is the story of a young woman named Amy Fleming (Amber Marshall) who, along with her mother, shares an ability to train and rehabilitate abused horses. After her mother’s death, Amy moves to Heartland, a ranch owned by her grandfather, and together with her remaining family and a ranch hand named Ty Borden (played by Graham Wardle), they build their horse-training empire.

Heartland has been on the air since 2007, and is filmed entirely in Canada, check out some of the Heartland filming locations now.

Where is Heartland filmed?

All of the exterior shots of the Heartland Ranch, including the house, barn, paddock and jumping area and the dude ranch are located in and around High River, Alberta, which subs for the fictional Hudson. High River is roughly 50 miles south of Calgary, and is located just east of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

The exterior of Maggie’s Diner, one of the main filming locations in Heartland , is located on 3rd Avenue SW between 1 Street and MacLeod Trail in High River, but sadly, it too is a set and not a real feed store and diner. The exterior of Maggie’s is the only public space on the Heartland filming location map, as the exterior of the ranch, located outside of High River in Millarville, is private property. All interior locations, such as the inside of the ranch house and the vet clinic, are shot in a studio in Calgary.

Interestingly enough, the series of novels upon which the show is based all take place in Virginia, but when the series was developed for TV, the location and several other details were changed so that the story would take place in Canada.

So many famous films have been shot in Calgary and its neighboring towns. The attractiveness of the city lies in its stunning Rocky Mountains and legit ranching country. For instance, Heartland is a movie that was filmed in a studio set in Calgary. Additionally, the film was also shot at several venues around the city. Fans and viewers of Heartland were excited to know that they could tour the locations where their favorite family drama was filmed.

In the TV series, the town of Hudson is, in reality, a tiny community located 30 minutes away to the south of Calgary. The town's name is High River. However, most of Heartland was filmed in the small village of Millarville in Alberta. There are many attractions to witness and activities to undertake in those stunning Calgary towns where Heartland was filmed.

This Is How To Enjoy The High River Experience

Heartland fans can start their tour at High River by visiting the stunning Museum of the Highwood. There is a Visitor Information Center there. The employees will not only guide visitors around town and instruct them on the best things to do, but they will also discuss the upcoming events in Heartland since they know what happens when the film is being shot. That's another reason why fans of the TV series must-visit High River. Moreover, visitors may get lucky if they go to High River on a day when the Heartland crew is filming.

All visitors have to do is check the area behind the museum where the crew trailers are usually parked when filming Heartland. This will allow people visiting to spot the actors of the show while filming on set. Inside the Museum of the Highwood, located in a historic Canadian Pacific Railway station, people can find a Heartland exhibit. Since other films and series were shot in High River, the museum also features other exhibits from movies, such as Unforgiven, The Revenant, and Fargo. For Heartland's display, visitors will have the chance to see various costumes that the actors wore during the show, take a knowledge quiz about the film, and enjoy an actual Maggie's Diner menu.

This Is Where To Shop And How To Visit Hudson's Streets

Another place in High River that visitors enjoy heading to is the Walkers Western Wear, located one block behind the Museum of the Highwood. Here, shoppers will have the chance to buy official Heartland hoodies and T-shirts. On 3rd Avenue, another shop called Olive & Finch sells trendy Heartland branded iPhone cases and Hudson T-shirts. Walking down 3rd avenue, people will feel as if they are in the fictional town of Hudson. The most exciting spot to explore on this street is Maggie's Diner.

However, people cannot enjoy a dining experience at this iconic place. Still, there is an authentic Maggie's Diner located on the 4th Avenue in High River, and visitors will have a chance to eat there. Back to the 3rd Avenue, visitors enjoy exploring Hudson's Antique Mall and Bartling and Sons Mercantile. Other spots include Van Born Travel Agency and the Hudson Times. Next comes Collosi's Coffee, which is considered the best coffee shop in the High River. This shop is located on 4th Avenue. Next to it lies Evelyn's Memory Lane, which is the real-life Maggie's Diner. It is worth trying the vanilla base with pralines, butterscotch, and chocolate swirls ice cream, and the delicious pies at this diner.

This Park Is A Must-Visit In High River And Other Locations Where Heartland Was Filmed

It is essential to visit the iconic George Lane Park when touring the High River. People also have the chance to enjoy an unforgettable camping experience there. On 5th Avenue where the park is located, the High River Motor Hotel is featured in several Heartland episodes. However, the motel is the same as it looks on the TV screen, so it is not recommended to stay there. Still, people can snap some memorable shots in front of this iconic motel. The historic Wales theatre can also be visited on 5th Avenue.

While parts of Heartland were filmed in High River, the majority of the series was shot at a working ranch located west of Millarville. In this town, people can visit some iconic spots used to film Heartland, such as the Millarville Anglican Church and the town's Farmer's Market and Race Track. The latter can be visited from mid-June until early October on Saturdays.

Another location where Heartland was filmed is at The Cowboy Trail, around an hour's drive away from downtown Calgary. A must-visit there is the Anchor D Outfitting, where people can experience trail rides in the heart of cowboy country.

  • Duration: Anchor D Outfitting runs trail rides twice a day every day. Children as young as six years old can ride.

Where is Heartland Filmed and Located?

TV lovers in the horse community are likely already acquainted with Heartland . For those a little late to the party, Heartland is a fictional Canadian TV series that has been running since 2007. The series revolves around protagonist Amy Fleming, a horse trainer, and her life and family on Heartland Ranch. But where is Heartland filmed and located?

The area where Heartland is filmed and its surrounding areas are spectacularly beautiful places with a fascinating history behind them. Close to the Rocky Mountains, the location of Heartland ’s filming is truly worth learning about. In this post, we’re going to dive a little deeper, explore the history of where Heartland is filmed and find out what to do if you’re visiting the area.

Where is Heartland Filmed and Located?

Heartland is filmed in High River, Alberta and its surrounding areas. It is also partially filmed in Calgary, which is around 53 kilometers away from High River. High River is a small town with a charming small-town vibe, according to the official High River Website . It is famous for being welcoming and hospitable to visitors.

Not all of Heartland takes place here — some parts of the series were filmed in a Calgary studio and in the Currie Barracks, a military base.

What’s High River’s Story?

High River has a rich and intriguing history. It was originally home to the Blackfoot people, a North American Indian tribe. They largely lived in Alberta and nearby U.S. state, Montana. The Blackfoot people are made up of the Siksika, the Kainai and the Piikani nations.

The Blackfoot tribe were originally buffalo hunters and were highly dependent on this skill for survival. As well as providing food, buffalo hide was used to make clothes within the tribe. The Blackfoot tribe both benefitted from and was threatened by the arrival of European settlers in the 1800s.

With the settlers came a smallpox epidemy which greatly decreased the Blackfoot population. The European settlers had initially proven useful, however, bringing with them horses and weaponry that aided the tribe in hunting.

In 2021, the Blackfoot people still live in Alberta and Montana and the Blackfoot language, Algonquian, is still spoken.

More High River Historical Facts

  • Two trees became entwined in High River to form one, which was sacred to the Blackfoot people. It was named “Medicine Tree”. The remainder of the tree can still be seen today in the George Lane memorial park.
  • The Northwest Mounted Police came to restore order when the Blackfoot tribe clashed with American frontier traders in the 1870s.
  • High River became a village in 1901 and a town in 1906.
  • High River is unfortunately known for frequent flooding. The Highwood River has flooded several times and has caused chaos in the town. In 2013, three people sadly lost their lives as a result of a flood.
  • Maggie’s Diner, Tack and Feed was affected by the 2013 flood, but survived the damage.
  • Alberta, the province where High River is situated has been the home of Native American groups for 10,000 years or more.

The Heartland Ranch

where is heartland ranch filmed ranch riding

The actual ranch that provides the setting for Heartland is situated around 45 minutes from High River and 10 minutes from Millarville. A man named Ray Foster wrote a comment in 2009 talking about his childhood at the real Heartland Ranch.

Mr. Foster writes that he lived at the ranch with his parents, where the family raised White-Faced Hereford Cattle. He lived there from the 1920s to the 1940s when WW2 began. He writes of a happy, contented childhood with many fond memories at the ranch.

Can I Visit Heartland Ranch?

Some fans may be wondering if it’s possible to actually visit and take a tour of the Heartland ranch. Unfortunately, the answer is a resounding no.

The ranch is privately owned, and so trying to enter it in any way would be trespassing. The owner rents the ranch out for Heartland to film on, but it is otherwise closed to the public. A sign outside of the ranch explicitly asks fans of the show to respect the “no trespassing” rule in order to ensure that the production team can continue using the ranch to film Heartland.

The sign advises disappointed fans on alternative (and perfectly legal) activities that they can indulge in nearby. One of these activities is visiting Maggie’s Diner, Tack and Feed. Let’s explore some of the most popular activities for visitors in High River.

What Can I Do Near Heartland Ranch?

The only set available for fans to visit is Maggies Diner, Tack and Feed. This set is used specifically for filming Heartland so isn’t open to looking around. Furthermore, visitors are allowed to look through the window to get a glimpse at the set and some of the props used in filming. Maggie’s Diner survived the 2013 High River flood.

On the High River welcome website’s blog , there is a downloadable map of Heartland scene locations and spots where other popular TV shows and movies have been filmed. Also, visitors are encouraged to use the map to take a “self-guided tour” of the local area. Best of all — this activity is free, so you won’t have to spend a dime!

If you’re visiting the area between June and October and enjoy perusing at the market, the Millarville Race Track has a farmer’s market every Saturday. Whereas, you can explore stalls offering delicious homegrown produce sourced by local farmers and growers or crafts made by local craftspeople and artists.

The Museum of the Highwood is located in downtown High River. It also contains the visitor center, which could prove very useful for exploring what to do in the area. The museum celebrates the heritage of the High River inhabitants and its rich history — it is pretty much a must-see for lovers of history or anyone interested in learning more about High River’s roots.

Horse Riding in High River

where is heartland ranch filmed riding mountains

Despite being a small town, if you’re planning on visiting High River, there’s an abundance of things to do and see. One of these activities, horse lovers will be pleased to know, is of course horse riding!

The Anchor D ranch , around a 50-minute drive from downtown High River, offers trail rides and mountain rides to its visitors. This will give you the opportunity to experience the most stunning views of the Rocky Mountains, foothills and prairies. This is truly a dream day out for horse lovers.

A few things to bear in mind — the ranch does not provide helmets, so if you would like to wear one, you’ll have to bring your own. Secondly, the minimum age for riding is six years old and children must ride alone (no more than one person per horse is permitted). You can check out the full list of requirements and recommendations on the Anchor D website.

Longer trips are another option offered by Anchor D, with trips ranging from a couple of days to a full seven days exploring the backcountry.

The Anchor D ranch also has a log cabin rental service. So, if you’d like to experience the gorgeous Rocky Mountains a little longer, you can choose from their Grandpa’s Cabin and Hunter’s Cabin from $180 per night. This sounds like an ideal getaway for horse lovers, families and friends alike.

Where Else Can I Stay in High River?

The Heritage Inn is one of High River’s hotels with good reviews that is pretty close to everything Heartland-related . It is a five-minute drive from Maggie’s Diner and a four-minute drive from the Museum of the Highwood. Calgary airport is a 47-minute drive away.

There are plenty of other hotels available in the area and some are pet-friendly. These include Ramada and Super 8, both by Wyndham High River.

  • Heartland is filmed in and around the town of High River, Alberta, Canada.
  • High River is a charming small town with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It has a rich history and there is lots to learn about the area.
  • High River was once inhabited by the Blackfoot tribe. European settlers arrived after 1877.

But where is Heartland filmed? And what are the various Heartland filming locations?

Where is Heartland Ranch? And is it a fictional town?

The show Heartland is filmed in Calgary, Canada, Millarville Alberta, High River Alberta and Longview Alberta. The Heartland Ranch itself is located in Millarville which is about an hour south of Calgary. The diner is in the Town of High River Alberta Just east of Millarville.

Maggie’s Diner and the Heartland TV set is located at 123 3rd Ave SW in High River, Alberta, T1V 1R3.

The Fictional Town in the Show is of Course The Real Town of High River

Heartland filming locations, high river, calgary and alberta, is maggie’s diner real, the tv shows also filmed in millarville, horse riding in heartland, how much does canada make from heartland, do the actors ride horses , where is heartland filmed – faq, when was heartland filmed, where is the real heartland ranch located, is heartland a real working ranch, is hudson alberta a real place, what is high river all about.

The backdrop of the show is set against the beautiful Rocky Mountains. The Heartland ranch setting is as legit as it gets, with the actual film set nestled in Albertan ranching country, surrounded by farms and plenty of horses.

Heartland is not just filmed in a boring old studio. It’s actually filmed on a dedicated studio set and in a handful of real local venues less than an hour from the city of Calgary. The quaint community of High River is turned into the TV town of Hudson using film magic. Want to get exclusive behind the scene details directly from the Heartland set? Visit the official CBC Heartland page for more information on the show, or search #hlinprod on social media. High River is a great place to visit if you are a fan of Heartland TV series. There are several businesses in town that cater to Heartland fans, and you can even take a tour of the ranch where the show is filmed.

High River (AKA Hudson) just so happens to be the best small town in Southern Alberta, making it a great location to film Heartland. There’s even a visitor’s centre in town where you can get a scoop on all the various filming locations for an authentic visit.

Get More info on High River – https://highriver.ca/

If you’re interested in visiting the real-life Hudson, check out behind the local museum. The film crews park their vans behind it. If you see them there, it means they’re filming somewhere! But don’t get your hopes up, as they aren’t filming often.

Speaking of a visit, be sure to check out the Museum of Highwood in High River. This place has all kinds of great artifacts from the show itself, like the wardrobes worn by the actors. They have a pair of Amy’s shoes and Ty’s iconic jacket. This is also a great place to pick up some incredible Heartland merchandise. The best part is that the museum is free for all visitors. Additionally, for Heartland fans, it’s best to begin their High River experience at the Museum of the Highwood. The town’s Visitor Information Centre is located inside, and these employees always seem to have the scoop on filming. Trust me, you’ll want to chat them up for Heartland juice. They’ll have it, plus tips on what else to see and do around town.

What else has been filmed in the area? Fargo, Unforgiven, and the Revenant! The area surrounding Calgary is one of the most beautiful and wild in the whole world.

Also Read – Who is Amber Marshall?

If you’re wondering “where is Heartland filmed?”, it’s primarily in Alberta, Canada. The cast, including Amber Marshall (Amy Fleming) and Shaun Johnston, film across various locations. Interior scenes are shot in Calgary, highlighting its scenic beauty, including the Heartland house.

The Millarville Farmers’ Market and Race Track are notable for rodeo and horse race scenes. Even for those unfamiliar with the show, this location is worth a visit. You may even see Amber Marshall as she lives around here.

High River is a key location. Maggie’s Diner on 3rd Avenue is a notable filming spot, and while the exterior is real, the interior is fictional and not operational.

Nearby, Evelyn’s Memory Lane on 4th Avenue is a real retro diner reminiscent of Maggie’s and was the backdrop for a cattle drive scene in season 4. George Lane Park, another HR location, was Amy’s graduation venue in the series. The Motor Hotel has also been featured, though it’s less appealing in reality than on screen.

maggies diner heartland set

Heartland is filmed in locations beyond High River, including a working ranch west of Millarville. This ranch is private, so fans can only view it on Google Maps.

Notable filming spots near Millarville include the Anglican Church, where Lou’s season 3 wedding took place, and the Millarville Farmer’s Market and Race Track, recognizable by its green and white horse stables and rodeo scenes.

Near Calgary, you can experience Heartland with trail rides, especially at The Cowboy Trail, which mirrors the show’s ranch setting. Hiring a local trail rider introduces you to cowboy life amidst stunning landscapes.

A filming location like this, often called a “dude ranch,” offers horseback riding. They might be family-owned or working ranches, allowing visitors to experience trail rides, see filming locations, and explore barns and vet clinics. The TV show prominently features horses, and learning about them and their riders is intriguing.

heartland ranches red barn

The provincial economy of Alberta makes a pretty handsome amount from hosting the TV show. Back in 2019, it was estimated that the show poured at least $200 million into the local economy. This money is through tourism, attracting addition film production, and jobs.

The small Albertan town of High River gets very busy in the summer from Canadian and international tourists who love the show and want to see the real-life filming locations, and the local businesses prosper a lot from all the attention.

The majority of the show’s horses, including the ones used in major productions like Lord of the Rings, are owned by John Scott, the show’s master wrangler. The actors, including Amber Marshall (Amy Fleming) and Shaun Johnston (Grandpa Jack), do most of their own horse riding, except for dangerous scenes where stunt doubles step in. In season 11, while the show introduced a Przewalski’s Horse, they actually used a Norwegian Fjord horse due to the rarity of the former. Additionally, Heartland’s Alisha Newton and her co-star both own and compete with horses in show jumping events.

The show is the longest-running one-hour scripted TV show in Canada of all time! The first episode aired on October 14, 2007, and the show is still running today.

Typically the show starts filming and production in June and the premiere of the season is in October. The show is primarily a Sunday night CBC show. The different filming locations are used when needed, like Maggie’s Diner. You can also check the official IMDB page .

Many fans wonder where the show is filmed, and if it’s in a fictional town, and does Amber Marshall (Amy Fleming) actually live there? It’s primarily shot in High River, Alberta, with the Heartland Ranch situated just south of Calgary. While the Heartland ranch is private and off-limits to visitors, many outdoor scenes, such as the ones featuring horse stables, rodeos, and horse racing, are filmed at the Millarville Farmer’s Market and Race Track, near the Rocky Mountains. This location is also used for filming house, barn, arena, and dude ranch scenes, giving the show a realistic and authentic feel. The show also films in other parts of Alberta, like an episode in season 9 shot in Claresholm. The interior shots, however, are filmed in Calgary.

The ranch, associated with Amber Marshall (Amy Fleming) , is a working ranch and is private. However, Canada has many other ranches with a similar vibe.

Examples include The Ranch at Panther Creek in Waterton Park, Alberta; Cross Zee Ranch in British Columbia; and Maple Hill Farm in Ontario. These are near the Rocky Mountains and offer trail riding experiences. The fictional town called Hudson is actually home to the diner tack and feed it is part of what Heartland films when they film in Alberta Canada.

The show is filmed in various locations, including a private ranch in Millarville, Alberta, which isn’t open to the public. If you’re in Canada, watch out for filming spots! Fans should also visit the real town that feels like the show’s fictional Hudson.

No, Hudson is a fictional town, but they use a real town in Alberta known as High River, as one of the filming locations to make it look like a real town. It’s located just south of Calgary and is the filming location for a lot of the exterior shots in the show. The town has a population of around 2,000 people and is surrounded by a beautiful landscape, making it a great place to visit if you are a fan of the show. This town is home to several businesses that cater to fans, and you can even take a tour of the ranch where the show is filmed. Spoiler alert: It’s just as sketch in real life as it appears on the big screen. Fun fact: There are lovely murals all over this town depicting early pioneering life.

In case you were wondering, the ranch that is used for one of the filming locations is not actually called Heartland Ranch. It’s called Scott Creek Ranch.

All of of people that live in High River have been asking. about filming? Is it really here in High River?

2026 3-Star Interior Offensive Lineman Set to Visit Michigan State

Since accepting the head coaching position at Michigan State, Coach Jonathan Smith has verbally expressed his goal to rebuild Michigan State’s football program through a strong recruiting presence.

Smith also noted that he would prefer to build the recruiting foundation with players from Michigan. Coach Smith likely believes this will help the Spartans retain players to its roster, as players are less likely to transfer if they are already going to school somewhere close to home.

Smith has remained active on the recruiting trail and has continued to ensure that he and his coaching staff have a strong presence there, no matter the time of year. Coach Smith has continued to express interest in three-star offensive and defensive linemen in future recruiting classes. He has recruited multiple three-star offensive linemen from Michigan and continues to do so to help solidify the team’s roster.

Michigan State recently expressed interest in three-star offensive lineman Benjamin Eziuka, another talented Michigan-raised offensive lineman. Smith and his coaching staff recently invited Benjamin Eziuka, a talented offensive lineman. Eziuka is a three-star offensive lineman in the 2026 recruiting class and would likely be one of the better players in Michigan State’s 2026 recruiting class, should he sign with the Spartans.

The Novi, Michigan native took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to announce his invite from Michigan State for the team’s first game of the season against Florida Atlantic. According to 247Sports, Eziuka is ranked as the 59th-best interior offensive lineman in the 2026 recruiting class. 247Sports also ranked him as the 13th-best player from Michigan in the 2026 recruiting class.

While Eziuka does have scholarship offers from other schools, such as Kentucky, Penn State, Miami (OH), and Toledo, he has yet to receive a scholarship offer from Michigan State. Altogether, Eziuka has over 55 scholarship offers from around the country. As Smith continues to do his best to jump-start the rebuilding of Michigan State’s football program, he must find a way to secure the best talent possible, as doing so will give him the best opportunity for quick success at Michigan State.
