Netflix's anti-password sharing will force you to sign in once a month – or get blocked

You also can't share with people who don't live with you

Silhouette of a hand holding a padlock in front of the Netflix logo

New details of the Netflix password-sharing measures have appeared online, revealing how the platform plans to crack down on users.

The newly found information was discovered on Netflix’s US Help Center and confirmed by The Streamable on January 31; however, that page has since been taken down. As of this writing, the Help Center has reverted back to its previous state. Fortunately, a copy of the rules can still be found on the Wayback Machine , a website that takes “screenshots” of the internet for the sake of posterity.

According to the reports, “Netflix accounts are still shareable, but only within one household.” Anybody from outside your home won’t be able to use that account and will be told to create with their own.

The platform will also require users to log into their Netflix account via their household’s Wi-Fi, open the app, and “watch something at least once every 31 days.” Doing this will register your device(s) as “trusted”. It’s unknown exactly what will happen if you don’t log in once a month, but judging from the wording, the implication is your account will get blocked. And if this happens to you, you’ll have to contact Netflix for help.

Travel woes

Things do get a little problematic if you decide to travel. The rules state that Netflix uses identifying information like “IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to determine whether a device” is connected to your primary location. But if you travel “or live between different places… for an extended period of time” – presumably more than 31 days – your account may be blocked. The Streamable’s report says if you vacation away from home, you can ask Netflix for a temporary access code so you can watch content on the platform for “seven consecutive days.”

The amount of devices that can be connected to your account depends on what plan you have. Both the Basic With Ads and Basic plans only support one device. Standard can connect to two.

Premium, on the other hand, is increasing the amount of devices users can connect to from four to six, according to a recent announcement . Additionally, Premium members will get to enjoy more content in spatial audio as the platform is expanding the feature to over 700 of Netflix’s most watched titles like Stranger Things.

Different set of rules

Although Netflix pulled down the US page, the rules still exist on the platform’s Costa Rican Help Center , but they’re a little different.

The Costa Rican measure allow Standard and Premium users to add a person who doesn’t live with them to their account for an extra $3 a month . Extra members must also have their accounts be in the same country as the original account owner. Other than that, the rules are the same such as being required to sign in and use the service every 31 days. So if you're thinking of going to Costa Rica, create an account, and then leave, it doesn't look like Netflix will let that slide.

It’s possible the Costa Rican version of the rules may not extend to the United States or anywhere else outside of Latin America. The platform doesn't appear to be ready to introduce its anti-password sharing measures to a wider audience. We reached out to Netflix to ask when the new rules will roll out in the US (previous reports have said March 2023) and will they resemble the Costa Rican measures in any way? This story will be updated if we hear back.

Netflix lists rules and exemptions to prevent account sharing outside household

Netflix sign atop building

Netflix is now detailing how it aims to maintain password sharing within a household while cracking down on outside usage. The company aims to curtail account sharing this year by asking people to pay extra money to use the streaming service outside the household for extended periods of time.

The streaming giant has shared terms detailing how it plans to control the experience within a household. It has updated its FAQ pages for countries where it is already testing extra membership fees for account sharing — Chile, Costa Rica and Peru .

These new terms ask people to define a primary location through their TV . All the accounts and devices should be connected to the same Wi-Fi as the TV.

“A primary location is set by a TV that is signed into your account and is connected to your Wi-Fi network. All other devices signed into your account on that Wi-Fi network will be associated with your primary location and will be able to use Netflix,” it says.

If a user doesn’t set a primary location or doesn’t have a TV, Netflix will automatically set a primary location based on IP address, device IDs and activity.

After that, people living in this home who want to use Netflix on their own devices have to launch the app at home at least once every 31 days.

“To ensure that your devices are associated with your primary location, connect to the Wi-Fi at your primary location, open the Netflix app or website, and watch something at least once every 31 days,” the company says on its support page.

But what if you grabbed an iPad before leaving the house for a long train ride but you rarely use this iPad at home? Chances are the device won’t be associated with your household when you try to watch something on the go. In that case, you can ask the main account holder to verify the device for you. The account holder will receive a code that they can relay to the person who is traveling. If the verification is successful the traveling member can watch Netflix for seven more days without any additional prompt.

It’s unclear if you can request temporary codes several times in a row. For instance, some students would rather request a code from their parents every week instead of paying for Netflix. These conditions also prevent folks from using Netflix through VPN connections for a long period of time.

The streaming company has made a ton of efforts to get more paying users on its platform. In November, it launched a cheaper $6.99 ad-supported monthly plan in the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Australia, Japan, Korea and Brazil. Meanwhile, it has also launched tools to kick devices off a subscription and transfer a profile from one membership to another to stop account sharing.

All these efforts have brought in more subscribers to the service. During its recent Q4 2022 quarterly results, the company said it added 7.7 million subscribers — much higher than the anticipated 4.5 million additions.

Netflix will go through a product overhaul under the new co-CEO Greg Peters (formerly COO) after founder Reed Hastings stepped down from the post last month . At the same time, the company said that it will crack down on password sharing “more broadly” in the coming months . Extra member fees will likely come to more countries soon.

Update 02/02/2023 7.50 PM IST: After the publishing of the story, Netflix clarified that it has not finalized the policy for US-based users. “Later in Q1, we expect to start rolling out paid sharing more broadly,” the company told The Verge. The company briefly updated the US page with the above-mentioned rules but retracted them later.

What the Great Netflix Password Crackdown Means for You

Portrait of Eric Vilas-Boas

Update, April 18, 5:15 p.m.: Netflix announced in its quarterly earnings letter to shareholders that it expects to implement its “paid sharing” program — the password-sharing crackdown — in a broad rollout that includes accounts in the United States by the end of June. Read below for how that will will work for you if you have a Netflix account.

Original story from February 2 follows.

It’s finally coming . After months and months of buildup , international market testing , and no small amount of subscriber hand wringing, Netflix is preparing to put the squeeze on users who hang onto their ex’s, older sibling’s, or parents’ account credentials for years on end. But it’s also running into hiccups along the way. On January 31, the company published what it described as an erroneous update to support pages worldwide with new details on how account verification works, causing confusion and panic for anyone bumming passwords (or, as some of us do it, managing a massive spreadsheet with multiple streaming accounts shared among four to five streaming anarchists dear friends and family members).

“For a brief time on Tuesday, a help center article containing information that is only applicable to Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru went live in other countries,” said Netflix’s communications director, Kumiko Hidaka. “We have since updated it.” The mistaken update put the rules on support pages worldwide, leading users to believe that Netflix was rolling out its stricter log-in practices across the board ASAP. These include forcing users to verify their home-streaming devices every 31 days and streaming devices they travel with on seven-day intervals. If you popped open the rules for the three Latin American markets where measures were already in play, that language remained, and they’re a signal that changes are a-coming for Netflix in the U.S. and other markets, perhaps sooner than some users would prefer.

When does Netflix’s password sharing end and paid sharing begin?

On February 8, the same rules rolled out to Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain — the first expansion of its so-called “paid sharing” plan since it began testing in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru in 2022. This time a blog post announced the changes with instructions for how to manage account access and devices, transfer profiles, and buy access for an additional user.

The U.S. and other markets will have to wait a while longer for the changes. Hidaka pointed to what the company shared on its last earnings call in January: “Later in Q1, we expect to start rolling out paid sharing more broadly.” Here’s what you can expect as those changes roll out in the coming weeks and months:

1. Giving your log-in to people outside your home is officially no bueno . This is the biggest change, the seed from which the other rules sprout and multiply. The company that once tweeted “ Love is sharing a password ” five years ago now specifies that if freeloaders outside your household want Netflix, they’ll have to pay for a new account. For now, the company says it won’t “automatically charge you” if someone logs in outside your home network, but I bet Netflix uses the opportunity to market the new Profile Transfer feature it rolled out last year as part of this strategy.

2. Expect to verify your devices at some point. You’ll do that with a four-digit code sent to the account owner’s email with a 15-minute expiration window. You may also have to renew the credentials every once in a while. Per the rules in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, users have to renew (i.e., log in into your home network) those credentials every 31 days, a.k.a. probably just after Netflix cancels its next critically acclaimed television series. Keep in mind that Netflix’s pricing plans differ on how many devices you can use simultaneously.

3. Traveling with Netflix will only slightly suck, Netflix swears. Before, watching on the road on a laptop or tablet or phone or Apple TV you unplugged and tossed in your bag on the way out was a breeze. If you were already logged in, you were good. Set it and forget it. The guidance in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru states it will block devices if an “account is accessed persistently from another location.” To unblock it, it suggests that you “request a temporary code to give you access to Netflix” when traveling for seven consecutive days or to add a new user to the account. Hmm.

4. Netflix will be watching you more closely 😳. The company will “ use information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity from devices signed into the Netflix account” to sniff out offenders, it promises. To be clear, it already had all this information from the jump, feeding it back to its spiders so they can sling you algorithm-approved programming. Given the added scrutiny on IP addresses and how they interface with your account, you may also run into issues if you’re frequently using, say, a VPN to stream content from different countries. We wouldn’t know anything about that, though.

It’s worth noting that since the password-crackdown strategy was announced, Netflix has had a stronger-than-expected showing in subscriber growth, adding 7.7 million new users in its last quarterly report and boasting that it doubled the customer base of its new ad-supported tier in January. Pretty soon, though, love won’t mean “sharing a password” so much as texting the account owner for the PIN to green-light a device. We’ll know what viewers think of that next quarter.

This post has been updated throughout with comment and clarification from Netflix, as well as to add countries added to its paid sharing plan.

How to Get Around the Netflix Password-Sharing Ban (for Now)

Netflix is looking to juice its subscriber numbers by cracking down on password sharing, but there are several workarounds to keep everyone watching until the streaming service catches on..

Jason Cohen

In a bid to boost subscriber numbers and revenue, Netflix has cracked down on password sharing and made it difficult to share your account with someone outside your household. If you want to share an account with someone who doesn't live with you, it will cost an extra $7.99 per month , at least. Netflix would prefer you transfer their profile to a new account.

If you're an account holder who suddenly has fewer users to manage, you may want to cancel or downgrade your subscription . But if you're looking to hold on until the bitter end, there are some workarounds that may work— for now .

Netflix Password Sharing Crackdown: How It Works

In order to determine who should and should not have access to an account, the streaming service is relying on something called a Netflix Household ," which is defined as a "collection of the devices connected to the internet at the main place you watch Netflix." A television is used as the center of that household, while a combination of IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity is used to determine who should be part of it.

This means the main TV you use to watch Netflix, plus all the devices connected to the same internet connection, are considered to be one household. While you can manually set your TV as the main device for your household, you can't add other devices or users to that household. It may sound impossible to get around this kind of setup, but there are some things you can try.

1. Purchase Additional User Accounts

netflix travel access code

If you want to continue sharing your password, the only official way is to pay for what Netflix is calling an "extra member." These extra members are additional profiles for people who live outside your immediate Netflix Household. They have their own account and password, but the membership is paid for by the person who invited them to the household.

An extra member slot costs $7.99 per month and is capped based on your subscription tier . Those subscribed to the Standard plan can add one extra member while those with Premium can add up to two. If you're on the ad-supported plan, you won't be able to add an extra member.

You can invite an extra member from the Add Extra Member page on the Netflix website. Select the Buy Now option, then enter their information to send them an invite. You can then transfer an existing profile or let them set up a new one. Once the person has activated their extra member account, you can manage extra members from your account page.

2. Share the Access Code

netflix travel access code

While Netflix does not leave a lot of room for various life situations—college students living in a dorm, children of divorced parents who move between homes, and so on—it did implement a workaround for those who are on vacation. If you're away from home and wish to watch TV in your hotel room, for instance, there is a solution.

When you log in to your account from an unknown device and network, Netflix will say that you are not part of the household. However, you can select an option to indicate that you are on vacation and Netflix will send a verification code to the account holder.

If you're the account holder, it should be easy to get the code and enter it on your TV. If you're not the account holder...it should be easy for the account holder to send you the code. Think of it like a two-factor authentication feature. Once the code is submitted, you're good to go.

3. Auto-Forward Verification Emails

netflix travel access code

When an access code is sent out, Netflix only gives you a few minutes to verify before it expires. This can make it hard to send someone else the code if the account holder happens to be away from their phone at the time. If the idea of dishing out codes to everyone on your account gives you anxiety, you can automate the process.

The account owner will have to set up automatic mail forwarding in their email. Set this up in Gmail by clicking the settings gear and selecting See all settings . Open the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab and choose Add a forwarding address , then enter the email address of the person with whom you want to share the account.

netflix travel access code

For this next part, you will need that other person's involvement. Before forwarding can happen, Google sends a confirmation email to the address you add. Have the other person click the link in the email and confirm the action. That email address should now show up as a forwarding email in your Gmail settings.

Enable Forward a copy of incoming mail to and make sure the correct email is selected in the drop-down. However, this means all your mail will be sent to that address, which we don't want, so the job isn't finished yet. The next step is to set up a filter that will send only certain emails to the forwarding address.

netflix travel access code

Open the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab and select the Create a new filter link to set the criteria for an email to be forwarded. Netflix sends out codes from the [email protected] email account, so you can add that email in the From field. Enter the other person's email address in the To field.

netflix travel access code

For even further specification, you can also add "Your Netflix temporary access code" to the Subject field, since this is what the company uses in the subject line of those emails. And since they also contain the profile name of the person who needs verifying, you can add their name in the Has the words field to narrow things down.

Hit Create filter , then tell Gmail what to do when an email matches your criteria by enabling Forward it to and select the email from the drop-down menu. Finally, choose Create filter and the filter you have set will now sit in the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab, which you can edit or delete at any time.

netflix travel access code

Now, return to your inbox and you will see a notice at the top of the screen reminding you that forwarding has been enabled. If you want to set this up for multiple users, repeat the steps to add other forwarding addresses and create additional filters as needed. Using each person's profile name will be key here.

4. Route Traffic With NordVPN Meshnet

netflix travel access code

Since location data isn't among what is collected by Netflix, a VPN won't be the easy fix here—especially since Netflix already blocks most of these tools. However, NordVPN has a unique feature called Meshnet that allows you to connect external devices together and avoid the roadblocks that prevent Netflix from working outside your household. You can essentially tell Netflix that your parents' TV in their house is actually part of your Netflix Household.

For exact instructions on setting up Meshnet, consult NordVPN's documentation . But all you really need to do is download the NordVPN app, create an account, and enable Meshnet. To add an external device, just download the app, sign into your account, and enable the feature.

5. Log in From the Account Holder's Wi-Fi

If the above method seems too complicated, Lifehacker has a much easier way to get around the block—hypothetically, at least. Since Netflix determines a household by the devices that connect to the same network, the simple solution is to log in from the account holder's home.

The service does allow members of a household to travel outside the house and keep watching, say, if you commute to work or otherwise spend prolonged periods of time away. As long as you live nearby, you could conceivably head over to their house, log in to your account from there, and then continue to use Netflix on that device from your own home.

The service will (theoretically) continue to believe you are part of their household and just spend a lot of time away "commuting." The only catch here being that you may need to do this more often than you might otherwise want to see the account holder.

6. Stick to the Mobile App

You may also be able to just do nothing. The block initially came for those watching on a television or streaming device . Those viewing from a mobile app have been able to skirt the crackdown a bit longer, though we have seen it hit people on the iPad app in recent weeks.

It's worth a shot for now, though. In the event that you do want to watch from a TV, your iPhone can use AirPlay to send Netflix to a compatible TV. For those with Android devices, Google's Cast feature should be able to help.

Netflix details how it will prevent users from sharing their account password with others

Avatar for Filipe Espósito

Netflix last year announced that it has been working on a feature to prevent users from sharing their account passwords with others. The change was being tested in some countries as the company claims that users sharing their Netflix accounts hurts its revenue. Now Netflix has detailed how exactly it will prevent users from sharing their accounts.

Here’s how Netflix aims to stop sharing account passwords

In a new FAQ section on its website (via GHacks ), Netflix clarifies that people living in another house “will need to use their own account” in order to access the streaming platform. According to the webpage, devices detected in other locations “may be blocked from watching Netflix.”

But for those who still had questions about how Netflix would restrict account password sharing, here’s how the company will do it. The platform will use information such as IP address, device IDs, and account activity to determine if a device logged into your account is connected to your primary location.

If a new device logged into the account is in a different location, Netflix will require a temporary code that allows logging into that location for seven consecutive days. The company explains that those traveling with their primary device will have no problems using Netflix in other locations. But to ensure uninterrupted access to Netflix, you’ll need to connect to Wi-Fi from your primary location at least once every 31 days.

To ensure uninterrupted access to Netflix, connect to the Wi-Fi at your primary location, open the Netflix app or website, and watch something at least once every 31 days. This creates a trusted device so you can watch Netflix, even when you’re away from your primary location. If you are away from your primary location for an extended period of time, your device may be blocked from watching Netflix. You can request a temporary access code to continue watching.

Top comment by Alex Rogers

This will do the exact opposite of what Netflix is expecting. The families that share accounts will likely get rid of their subscription altogether instead of splitting into multiple paid subscriptions.

It’s worth noting that this doesn’t affect the number of people who can watch Netflix content simultaneously with the same account.

Profile transfer

As another measure to combat the account password sharing, Netflix introduced last year another feature named “Profile Transfer.” As the name suggests, this feature helps users migrate their personal Netflix profile from someone else’s account to a new one. In other words, a user can create a new Netflix account and migrate all their history, suggestions, and settings.

Netflix confirmed last year that it lost more than 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2022, and the numbers show that more people continue to migrate to other streaming platforms. From January 2021 to August 2022,  Netflix’s global market share dropped from 32% to 27% .

This has even led the company to introduce a new, cheaper, ad-based plan . By preventing users from sharing their accounts with others, Netflix expects to force more people to have their own Netflix subscription, which should result in more revenue for the company. However, only time will tell if all these measures will be effective for Netflix.

Sorry You’ve Used All Your Temporary Codes Netflix Error [Fixed]

Sorry You've Used All Your Temporary Codes

Most Netflix users in affected regions who are involved in password sharing or use of their Netflix account outside their “Household” have had their fair share of issues due to the Netflix Household policy; being here means you are probably also experiencing issues as a result of that.

This update usually results in the This TV Isn’t Part of Your Netflix Household Error message for those who don’t adhere to it; however, those who are traveling can access and view shows and movies on Netflix by simply clicking the “I’m Travelling” option under the error message on their TV.

The annoying thing is that after seven days, you’ll be kicked out of Netflix and prompted with the This TV Isn’t Part of Your Netflix Household error; if you click the “I’m Travelling” option again, you’ll get the “ You’ve used all your temporary codes ” error, which prevents you from accessing Netflix outside your “Household.”

Now, here’s the deal: Netflix requires you to connect to your home network on your TV in order to continue using your Netflix account outside of your Household—your primary location—which is difficult in the simple sense because you are traveling outside of your Netflix primary location.

This can be frustrating, but there are a few workarounds you can use to bypass the issue, and we will look into them in this article so that you do not have to miss out on Netflix while traveling.

How to Fix Sorry You’ve Used All Your Temporary Codes Netflix Error?

The solutions provided below can be used whenever you encounter the “Sorry you’ve used all temporary codes” error on Netflix and want to get around so you can be able to watch movies on your Netflix even though you are outside the “Household.”

1. Route the TV Traffic to your home location (Your Netflix Household)

meshnet for netflix

When this issue was reported to Netflix help, the workaround recommended was to refresh the TV from the registered Household—which could be your home—and open Netflix on it, which is normally impossible as you are presently away from your primary Netflix location.

However, you can accomplish this by routing traffic on the TV (the one you are having issues on) to a device on the primary network in your registered Household (home location) to make it appear like you are browsing from the home location because that is the IP address the TV will now use.

This workaround can be performed using NordVPN’s Meshnet feature , which will redirect traffic from the TV to a device connected to your household WiFi.

There is one potential drawback to this method: you must initiate a Meshnet connection between your home device and the TV outside your household, which is not a big deal, but if you do not have anyone on your Netflix primary location who can help you with the setup, you may be unable to use the workaround.

Also, for the workaround to be feasible, the home device through which the TV traffic is routed must be turned on at all times.

2. Use Apple TV

While this error occurs on all TVs, some users have stated that they were able to get through the Netflix Household policy on their Apple TVs.

This suggests that Apple TV is unaffected by Netflix’s oversight of your location—it doesn’t let Netflix know whether you’ve left your house or not—most likely because Apple prioritizes privacy and does not allow unauthorized third-party access to its devices.

This workaround might not last forever, but it will allow you to access Netflix from anywhere without being affected by the Netflix Household issue. So, if you have an Apple TV, try opening Netflix on it and seeing if it works.

3. Watch from mobile devices

Mobile devices are not affected by the Netflix Household thing; plus, if you have used Netflix on your mobile device while in your primary Netflix location (connected to the main WiFi network there) within the last 30 days, you will not have any problems using Netflix while traveling.

So in a case when you are limited from watching your Netflix on a TV due to the fact that you are outside the Household and you have been presented with the “Sorry You’ve Used All Your Temporary Codes” error

4. Cast Netflix to Your TV

Another workaround for the “Sorry You’ve Used All Your Temporary Codes” error on Netflix is to cast Netflix from your PC or tablet to a TV.

This is due to the fact that you will, most times, be able to access Netflix on your PC and mobile phones even if you are experiencing the above error on your TV.

This is incredibly simple, and you can cast your screen to your TV using Chromecast, HDMI, or a third-party program.

5. Pay the extra $8

Here is a solution that may not be what you want to hear, but it may be the only way to access your Netflix account while traveling.

Since the TV you have the right issue with is not part of your Netflix Household, Netflix offers you the option to add another member (user/device) by paying an extra $8 in addition to your monthly subscription charge.

This solution can be done by using this link and following the prompt to create a membership for the new device or user.

After that, an invitation link will be sent to the new device/user, and you can use that to set up the Netflix account on the TV without getting restricted by the whole Household thing.

FAQs: Sorry You’ve Used All Your Temporary Codes Netflix Error

How long do netflix temporary access codes last.

In most cases, the Netflix temporary access code that allows you to access Netflix while traveling lasts seven days.

Why is Netflix saying I used all my temporary codes?

When Netflix notifies you that you have used all of your temporary codes, you can no longer get verification when you use the I’m traveling option to access your Netflix while outside the Netflix Household.

The I’m traveling option only works once for most users, while other people stated that it worked more than once, but this could be because they were able to use Netflix at their primary location on the TV within 7 days of the last time the bypass was used.

However, there are a few workarounds you can use whenever you get this issue, and we have discussed them in this article.

Conclusively, you can bypass the “Sorry You’ve Used All Your Temporary Codes” issue by redirecting traffic from the affected TV to a device in your primary location. That is the best solution, but if you encounter any problems with the workaround, let us know in the comments area below.

How to Use Netflix Secret Codes

Feel like you’re not seeing everything that’s available on Netflix? Your Netflix homepage is based on what you’ve previously watched, so you’ll only see suggestions for titles in the same genres. To get past this, you can use Netflix secret codes. We’ll show you how in this article.

Key Takeaways: Netflix Genre & Category Codes

  • Netflix has a list of genre codes that can be used to show all the titles in a specific category.
  • To use a code, all you need to do is add it at the end of a special URL: www.netflix.com/browse/genre/
  • Due to Netflix’s regional restrictions, some codes might not work in certain countries. However, you can get past geoblocks with a reliable Netflix VPN , like ExpressVPN .

Netflix has enough movies and shows in its library to cause a popcorn shortage at your local store. However, when you’re scrolling through Netflix’s homepage, you might feel like you’re not seeing the full package. Well, that’s because you’re not. The only way to see everything Netflix has to offer is to use this Netflix secret codes list.

Netflix uses an algorithm to customize each user’s experience. It collects data about a user’s interests and what they’ve watched. Netflix then uses that data to recommend similar shows and movies the user might like.

This means your front page is only showing a portion of Netflix’s library. Thankfully, you can sneak past its limited selection and access complete genre lists using specific codes. In this article, we’ll list all the available Netflix cheat codes and show you how to use them.

Note that regional restrictions on Netflix means that some hidden codes might not work in your country. However, a good virtual private network (VPN) can get past those geoblocks — though you’ll need one of the best VPNs that can bypass the Netflix VPN ban .

Updated the list of Netflix category codes to include “Short-Ass Movies,” a new Netflix category influenced by SNL’s “Short-Ass Movie” skit (code 81603903).

Updated the structure of the article for better clarity.

Some readers have pointed out that they could not get certain codes to work. We tested all of the codes and can confirm they are all up to date, as long as you are connected to Netflix via the U.S.

How to Use Netflix Secret Codes

Before we start, note that the below method does not work on the Netflix app — you have to use the website. Thankfully, the process is even easier for app users: Simply copy and paste the code into the Netflix search bar and you’re done!

Alternatively, once you’ve found something you like in the browser, you can add it to “my list” and watch it in the app.

If you prefer watching Netflix on your laptop, the steps are still super easy to follow. We’ll show you how it works with screenshots.

Netflix Secret Codes List

In this section, we’ll list all available Netflix category codes . Each category has a general code, which we’ve popped in the heading, and subcategories listed below.

We have tested all of the codes and we’re positive that they all work, though with a small caveat. Netflix’s content differs by country, so whether the codes work and what content is included in the category will depend on where you’re located.

It’s easy to unblock content from different regions, though, and you could use a reliable streaming VPN to get past geoblocks like this. If you want a few quick suggestions, ExpressVPN is our top recommended VPN for Netflix, followed closely by NordVPN .

Action & Adventure — Code 1365

How to Keep Access to Netflix While Traveling

  • November 23, 2020

netflix travel access code

Traveling can be a great joy, but when you want a little touch of home, it can be nice to unwind while watching one of your favorite Netflix shows. What if your current country prevents you from watching certain Netflix shows, or even blocks the application as a whole ? Here’s how you can keep your access to Netflix while traveling.

Licensing and Regional Content

It’s undoubtedly true that traveling is one of life’s greatest joys and privileges. There’s nothing quite like going to see the savannas of Africa, the jungles of South America, or the ancient and historical temples of many Asian countries in person. However, while traveling has its own charms and rewards, many of us still like to keep up with our favorite Netflix shows , especially since we pay a monthly subscription fee. The trouble here is that different countries have different licenses for various shows and content.

This is all related to the various TV and media laws that are in place in different countries. Some countries are much more relaxed than others; for instance, it’s a lot easier to find shows with nudity in Nordic countries than it is in places like India or China .

Ultimately, Netflix is obliged through international laws to stop users from bypassing national restrictions on certain types of video content. If Netflix detects that you are trying to watch something that isn’t allowed in your host country, you’ll be blocked.

How to Access Netflix on the Go

Fortunately, there is a solution for this issue, and you can keep your access to Netflix by using a VPN.

“VPN” stands for virtual private network, and you access them through subscription-based services. These services allow you to connect to the internet through a digital tunnel that acts as a secure server. Without getting too technical, a VPN can help you remain anonymous and unseen by any Internet digital authorities while you browse the web or watch your favorite Netflix shows. Many people use VPNs for their anonymity benefits, surfing the web with total privacy and preventing their private data from being collected by snoopers or advertisers.

So how does a VPN help you watch Netflix in other countries? Most VPN services allow you to choose your “mask” IP address, allowing you to masquerade as an Internet user from another country. Let’s say that you want to watch a Netflix show that is allowed in the United States but is banned in China. You can simply set up your computer’s VPN application with an IP address from the U.S. and you’ll be set! Even better, most top VPN services for browsing Netflix include tutorials to walk you through this process step-by-step.

VPNs allow you to enjoy unprecedented anonymity and internet access anywhere in the world. You should definitely consider using a VPN for its streaming freedom benefits, along with the extra digital security and anonymity you’ll have as you travel.

Table of Content

In our interconnected world, Netflix has become an essential companion for travelers seeking entertainment on the go. This guide aims to simplify the experience of enjoying your favorite shows and movies while traveling, keeping you informed about Netflix's latest policies to ensure a smooth and hassle-free streaming experience.

Netflix's March 2023 Policy Update:

Netflix's most recent policy update, slated for broader implementation in Q1 2023, is geared towards curbing password sharing. Under this new policy, users sharing their accounts with individuals outside their household are required to pay an additional fee. Netflix asserts that this change is necessary to counter widespread account sharing, which undermines the company's ability to invest in and improve its service.

To enforce these new rules, Netflix will utilize IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity, allowing the company to easily identify users' locations.

How to Travel with Netflix

Using Netflix while traveling is a straightforward process. Simply log in as usual, and Netflix will automatically adjust its content library based on your current location, using IP address detection.

For travelers using Netflix away from their home address, they may encounter the message, "Your TV isn't part of the Netflix Household for this account." In such cases, select the option "I'm traveling," and you will receive a code allowing you to use your Netflix account beyond your primary household location.

netflix travel access code

Netflix Travel Code Limit

The previous limitation of 7 consecutive days for the travel code has been removed from the Netflix website. However, users are now required to log in on their device from their home WiFi network every 31 days. Failure to do so may lead to being locked out during extended travel.

Can Using a VPN Help Me Get Around the New Rule?

Simply put, no. While VPNs let you access different Netflix libraries, they can't mimic your exact home IP address. This means they won't work to get around the new rule restricting account sharing with people outside your household.

What If I Have a Second Home in Another Location?

For those with multiple homes, within a certain timeframe, using Netflix on your phone with each home's Wi-Fi allows TV access for both. However, you must bounce back and forth between the locations.

The specific timeframe for this process is not specified here, but it is crucial information to be aware of for seamless streaming between multiple locations. If you require additional details on this timeframe, please refer to the latest information available on the Netflix website.

Can I Watch Netflix Downloads Offline in Another Country?

It depends on Netflix's content licenses in the country you're visiting. If Netflix has the license for the movie or show there, you can watch your downloads offline. But remember, the same restrictions that apply to streaming titles in certain countries also affect downloaded content.

How to Access Netflix When You Are Traveling Abroad

How to Access Netflix When You Are Traveling Abroad

Netflix has risen to become a global phenomenon. The popular streaming service has been on the rise for many years now, but the global lockdown of 2020 has really helped it to gain massive amounts of traction.

While many people enjoy binge watching Netflix and waiting for the latest shows to arrive, some people don’t have access to some movies and series. In some countries, the Netflix service is not available at all.

Netflix might not be available in your region , or the area that you are traveling to. However, that shouldn’t stop you from keeping up with the latest episodes, movies, documentaries, and overall the best Netflix travel shows that are released on a daily basis.

Why is Netflix Not Available Worldwide?

Despite its massive popularity, Netflix is not available in all countries. This mainly comes down to licensing and TV rights. Netflix has to abide by the rules set by the licensing restrictions of specific movies and TV shows which limits them from streaming it in some countries.

This is done by using geoblocking which is a way for Netflix to determine your location by using the IP address that your connection is coming from. Your IP address gives your location away, and if you are in a region where they are not allowed to be streamed, the title will not show up at all.

Some countries such as China block Netflix entirely which means you can’t even access the streaming service. In other countries, the Netflix platform might not be available at all. Luckily though, there is a way to get around this.

How to Bypass Geoblocking

Your IP address is the key to identifying your location. Luckily, however, your IP address is not a ball and chain, and it can easily be changed in order to ‘trick’ the system into believing that you are accessing Netflix from elsewhere.

You can use a VPN, or Virtual Private Network to easily bypass blocking and access Netflix from anywhere in the world. A VPN can encrypt your internet connection, and while it is mainly used as a cybersecurity tool, it has features that can help you to bypass being blocked.

One such feature is a VPN’s ability to change the location of your IP address. You can do so by connecting to one of the global servers offered by the VPN provider. Each server will give you a unique Netflix experience with different movies and TV shows.

It’s highly recommended to use a premium VPN service rather than a free one. A free VPN is not ideal for streaming Netflix, YouTube, sports or any other kind of video content. There are several reasons for this.

The first is that a free VPN offers slower internet speeds. This could lead to an unpleasant viewing experience with a lot of buffering and lag. This will still be the case even if you have a faster internet connection because the speed limit is imposed by the VPN provider.

Another reason why you should avoid using a free VPN is that they often have a data cap. Most VPN providers will put a daily limit of 500 MB on their service. Streaming Netflix can take up to 1.2GB per hour, which means you will most likely only get about 30 minutes of streaming before you hit your daily data cap.

Finally, free VPNs also have limited servers to choose from. In most cases they will also give you a less popular server to use, so you might not get the US or UK server, which is the one you would be looking for if you want to stream Netflix.

Follow the quick steps below to start watching Netflix from anywhere in the world:

  • Choose a VPN provider and create an account on their website.
  • Install the VPN on the device that you prefer to stream Netflix from.
  • Activate your VPN and choose the United States server.
  • Log in to Netflix from your device.
  • Enjoy your streaming!

Are There Any Risks to Using a VPN to Watch Netflix?

There are some important factors that you should know about when using a VPN. Firstly, in most countries, the government encourages the use of a VPN because it offers extra privacy and security.

However, in some countries such as China, the use of a VPN has been made illegal. Despite this though, there have been no reports of people being fined or arrested for using a VPN in China. The way they control VPN usage is by blocking the websites that allow you to download them. The solution is to simply have the VPN installed before you travel. However, should you still use a VPN in these countries it will be at your own risk.

Recently Netflix has stated that they will begin to crack down on people who use a VPN to access different content that has been geoblocked. This is because Netflix has several legal issues that arise when this happens. However, there are still some VPN providers that allow you to stream Netflix. It’s important to do your research beforehand to ensure that your selected VPN provided allows Netflix streaming.

Are Netflix password sharing rules angering fans? Yes, but subscriptions are still up

Portrait of Kelly Lawler

Aria Rose and her partner were queuing up the new season of "Black Mirror" on Netflix last month when they got a dystopian message of their own: No more Netflix .

Rose, from Greensboro, North Carolina, is one of many Netflix users to have recently been given the heave-ho from the streamer because she had used a shared account.

The streaming service has become serious about stopping its subscribers from sharing their passwords with family, friends and ex-boyfriends you forgot were still using your log-in. The new policy, which took effect May 23, is designed to prevent sharing passwords with anyone outside of a designated "household" − unless you want to pay extra.

The goal is to get the freeloaders to become new paying customers, but not everyone is willing to cough up the cash. "My partner and I are just not going to have Netflix from now on," Rose says. She's frustrated at being asked to pay more for streamers that are making less television for her to watch.

It's a big change in policy and tone for a streamer that once promoted password sharing as part of its marketing strategy. So far, it has spelled more money and subscribers for Netflix, according to its latest earnings report , but it's also angering and alienating its user base, some of whom are canceling the service outright . Here's what you should know about the policy, and why it's probably here to stay (and may even spread to other streamers).

What is Netflix's new password sharing policy?

Starting May 23, use of your Netflix account has been limited by location and devices.

"A Netflix account is for use by one household," the official announcement explained. "Everyone living in that household can use Netflix wherever they are − at home, on the go, on holiday."

You can set your household up manually or Netflix will do it for you, based on IP (internet protocol) address information for your account. If someone is using your account a few states away, they're likely to be bounced from the platform.

Now you either have to transfer your friends and relatives’ profiles to a new membership they pay for or pony up to continue sharing your account with them. Netflix calls this adding a new "member" to your account, and it's $7.99 a month, less than the previous "Basic" ad-free plan ($9.99/month) but more that the new "standard" plan with ads ($6.99). Netflix is phasing out that Basic plan for new and rejoining customers in an effort to encourage more users to subscribe to the ad-supported plans, but any current subscribers can keep it.

If you travel frequently, have a second residence or need to use Netflix outside your home regularly, there are ways to make sure you don't lose access to your account. But these workarounds have limits and can be multi-step processes. If you have a second home, you need to first open Netflix on a mobile device on the primary WiFi network, and then secondary location, at least once a month to maintain access. If you travel to different places frequently, Netflix offers codes to allow you to log in on new TVs in hotels or rentals, but users report obtaining too few codes per month, which can be limiting for professions like travel nurses, salespeople or writers.

Are Netflix users happy with the new password sharing crackdown?

Not really.

Jennifer Dedross, 39, a travel blogger who lives in the U.K., has confounded Netflix's new system with her mobile lifestyle. "Just in the last month, I’ve been in three different countries, four different cities and five different hotels/apartments. … Right now, I’m in a hotel and I can’t get another Netflix traveling code because I already used it. ... If something doesn’t change, then I will be canceling."

Others have already canceled, or declined to pony up for a new account after losing access to someone else's. Brayden Simms, 41, a copy editor from Boulder, Colorado, canceled his account. "I just feel like everyone is struggling for cash right now, and we are all looking for ways to cut back and live a more sustainable lifestyle. Meanwhile, the number of monthly subscriptions we are expected to pay is going up and up."

Rose, who will not be watching the new "Black Mirror" season after all, doesn't mince words when discussing her changed opinion of the streamer.

"Netflix and all the other streaming services are going to bring their own demise."

No more 'basic' plan: Netflix switches up pricing plans for 2023: Cheapest plan without ads now $15.49

Is the Netflix password sharing crackdown working?

The short answer is yes.

On Wednesday, Netflix released its second-quarter earnings for 2023 and led by touting gains resulting from the password crackdown. "Revenue in each region is now higher than pre-launch, with sign-ups already exceeding cancellations," Netflix's letter to shareholders said, noting 5.9 million subscribers were added in countries where the company introduced the password crackdown. But some of that growth can be attributed to the introduction of cheaper, ad-supported tiers of the service.

Outside data supports the idea that new subscriptions are offsetting angry cancelations. According to Parrot Analytics, demand for the streamer's library actually increasedby 4.5% in the month after the crackdown in the U.S. And it's still the top streamer: Netflix can boast 17.1% of the share of audience demand in the May 23-June 23 window, which is larger than rivals such as Hulu (15%), Max (13%), Amazon Prime Video (11%), Disney+ (9%) and Apple TV+ (1%) in the same time frame.

So while the new system is inconvenient and angering for many Netflix users, the policy is working for the company, and it's unlikely to change anytime soon.

Will other streamers have similar password sharing crackdowns?

It might just happen, because big business is as susceptible to peer pressure as anyone else. After streamer Max (formerly HBO Max) began excising titles from its library last year as a cost-cutting measure, others quickly followed, including Paramount+, Disney+ and Starz. Netflix executives once swore they would never put commercials on the platform, but after ad-supported tiers were successful on other streamers, Netflix added its own.

So if you're sharing other accounts, you might want to enjoy them while you can. Just in case.

Can you use your Netflix account if you go on a trip or vacation?

If despite Netflix ’s new and strict measure on shared accounts, you are still a user of the platform, it is likely that you will have some questions about the use of your account in different circumstances. Netflix, let’s remember, forces you to establish a main address for the account in order to detect if a person who does not live in that house is using the same subscription. If so, the service will limit access to that non-resident user, forcing them to pay a sub-account, create a new account or unsubscribe from the service. But, What if that person is on vacation?

Luckily, Netflix is not so strict when a user who has an account established at home travels for a few days or even weeks for vacations or any other circumstance. Nevertheless, We must take into account a series of guidelines .

First of all Netflix allows access to an account from devices such as a smartphone, tablet or computer , without any limitation. That is to say, it is possible to watch a series or a movie away from home without any notice appearing. And, of course, without having to pay an extra cost for a sub-account for non-residents.

As always, subscribers will be able to watch Netflix on their personal devices or sign in on another TV (at a hotel or vacation rental, for example). Netflix states on its website.

Of course, it is likely that after a long period of time —for example, 30 days—, Netflix will restrict access from that device because it has been connected to the home network. Or, because it has been constantly connecting to a Wi-Fi network that is not the main one.

What if I use a TV? How much time do I have to watch Netflix while on vacation?

However, what if you want to log in on a tv away from home? In this case, Netflix has an option to, in a way, notify you that we are on vacation. This will prevent the platform from taking the necessary measures when using the account in another place that is not the usual address.

When you go to log in to your Netflix account on a TV that is not the one -for example, that of a hotel or a vacation apartment-, the following message will be displayed: “this TV is not connected to the main location of this account” . It will also do so together with a called button “I’m on a trip” . By clicking on this option, the platform will display a new page with the possibility of receiving a temporary access code by email or SMS. That code will allow you to use that TV normally for a maximum of 14 days.

And once the 14 days have passed? In this case, Netflix will redisplay the screen with the notice that that TV is not connected to the primary location. And, therefore, it will allow you to receive the temporary code again so that it is possible to continue playing content for another 14 days.

It is likely, yes, that after that second extension, access will be completely limited. In this case, the service would detect that the account is being used constantly from a location other than the one indicated as the main one, and it would be necessary to pay the additional 5.99 euros that a subaccount costs.

Netflix’s password sharing ban has a workaround – here’s how often you need to do it

netflix travel access code

Netflix’s infamous password-sharing ban is in effect, and the easy fix for it is to simply clean up your account and pay for access. But despite the fact that I’ve sided with Netflix on its anti-password-sharing measures , I’m also taking my time dealing with it. There is a simple workaround for Netflix’s password-sharing ban: You just have to update your Netflix household for each separate location where your friends and family use your account.

What it means to update your Netflix household

Netflix lets you share your password within the same household. That means the same location, where multiple people can reside. Until the ban, you could share your password with anyone and forget about it. Now, Netflix’s algorithms will monitor to see if your account is accessed from multiple locations, and it’ll start verifying them.

The account owner has 15 minutes to click on a link and verify the household. Once that happens, playback will continue at the new location. But future prompts will follow. If you fail to click on that verification prompt in time, your friend or family member will have to resend the email verification.

Our Planet II, narrated by David Attenborough.

How often do you have to verify your location?

If you were looking for a definitive answer, I’ll tell you from the start there isn’t one. No two Netflix accounts are alike when it comes to password sharing. The more people have access, the more frequent the verification prompts.

That’s right, Netflix will verify everything. There’s no primary household to set up. The algorithms look at access history, device ID, and simultaneous access. Say you have people in locations A and B using Netflix at the same time. They might both get household verifications on that day.

Fubar on Netflix

How to deal with the Netflix household verification process

As I explained, you should absolutely not cancel your Netflix account because you can’t share your password with everyone in your building. Just trim down access, and remove people who shouldn’t be there.

Or, you can cancel Netflix and use these free streaming services instead.

Still, the problem remains. Your Netflix experience will be interrupted by prompts to verify access, or to add a Netflix account.

Netflix Secret Menu: How to Unlock Hidden Movies and TV Shows

Use the Netflix secret menu to break free from the platform's curated picks.

Netflix logo in a pink box surrounded by black background

You can use Netflix category codes to sift through hundreds of movies and shows the service has to offer.

Netflix  isn't being as honest as it could be.The end of the the rom-coms section isn't the end of what the platform has to offer. In fact, you're only scratching the surface when you browse the various sections of the  streaming service . You're paying for the entire Netflix catalog, not just the company's carefully curated picks. Beat the algorithm by learning how to use the  Netflix secret menu . That's the key to unlocking its secret content and maybe even discovering a new favorite movie or two.

Here's the thing. When you watch Netflix on your  OLED TV or binge on your phone , you've only scratched the surface. Netflix doesn't show you everything it has to offer all at once. In fact, the platform has been serving you  personalized suggestions based on your viewing history and preferences since you began using it. Unfortunately, its algorithm can't always be trusted to paint an accurate portrait of what's available. That's where you come in.

CNET Tech Tips logo

You can put the secret Netflix menu to work to get full control over what kind of content you devour. It's all dependent on a code-based system. Different numeric codes on the service let you browse and select from thousands of niche genres and subcategories, whether you're into horror or rom-coms.

Instead of letting the Netflix algorithm decide, take streaming into your own hands. It's time to cut short the endless scrolling and discover a new show or movie you'll love.

What are Netflix codes?

Netflix codes are a set of unique numerical identifiers that can help you find specific genres or sub-genres in the Netflix library on the streamer's website (not the app).

Typically, you're constrained to the genres available to you via the main Netflix menu. There's no way to choose by specific category other than what's been chosen for you when you log on. Using these codes opens up an entire library of options for you to choose from that can help you better settle on what to watch for the night. It can even help you discover new shows and movies you've never heard of.

Adding these codes to the ends of Netflix URLs lets you directly access collections of movies and TV shows that fall under your chosen category. For example, if you're short on time and want to queue up a shorter movie, you could check the 90-Minute Movies category with the code 81466194. Looking for something for your entire brood to enjoy? The "Family Movie Night" collection, accessed with code 2013975, is chock-full of favorites even Grandma can get into.

There are well over 36,000 codes to choose from, so don't worry about memorizing them or trying random sequences. Resources like Netflix-Codes.com have an entire directory to sift through, so you can search for what you'd like to watch there and find corresponding codes in no time.

There isn't an all-encompassing Netflix secret menu per se. Instead, you will use URLs with special codes to display certain curated collections of movies and shows.

Netflix-Codes.com has a comprehensive list of the streaming platform's hidden genre categories and subcategories. In total, there are around 20 top-level categories covering genres like animation, foreign films and classic movies. Within those main genres are many more hyper-specific subgenres denoted by numeric codes.

All you need to do is find the category you want, copy the related code, and append it to the end of a Netflix URL.

What kinds of categories does Netflix have?

There's much more to Netflix than what you've been scrolling through. At last count, there were over 36,000 unique categories to explore.

The entirety of the categories available on Netflix starts with broad main genres like Action, Comedy and Drama, but they get more specific as you dive even deeper. There are straight-to-the-point collections like Movies Directed by Women (code 2974953), or more specifically targeted curated lists, like Supernatural Soaps (code 81238162), just in case you like your werewolves with a side of angst and romance.

Are you a huge Swiftie? Is there another celebrity you want to learn more about? The Pop Culture Icons category (code 81278963) includes picks like the Taylor Swift-centric documentary Miss Americana or the Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody .

Maybe you've been told time and time again that you should really get into Korean TV and don't know where to start. Hit up the K-Dramas for Beginners menu (code 2953105) for a selection of hit K-Drama series like Squid Game and Boys Over Flowers .

Rather than relying solely on the standard homepage categories or Netflix's algorithm, you can use these secret codes to pinpoint and explore different nooks and crannies of the catalog to find hidden gems.

How do I use Netflix codes to find movies and shows to watch?

If you're not comfortable with editing Netflix URLs, you can use a browser extension to access the secret menus. The Better Browse for Netflix extension for Chrome is a great choice. Here's how to use it:

1. Go to the Chrome Web Store and search for "Better Browse for Netflix." (Note that this extension is unavailable for Firefox users.)

2. Click Add to Chrome .

3. Click Add Extension .

4. Log into your Netflix account in a new tab.

If the extension is installed, you'll see a Browse All option at the top of your Netflix home screen next to My List. Click it to scroll through the subgenres or to search through specific categories.

Adding the Better Browse for Netflix extension to Chrome gives you a drop-down menu with Netflix categories.

Alternatively, you can use the FindFlix: Netflix Secret Category Finder browser extension for Chrome or Firefox . This add-on will create a drop-down menu complete with Netflix categories for your browser that you can scroll through by clicking on the FF icon that will appear on the top right of your screen. There's no need to scroll Netflix natively with this add-on, and it features 7,500 categories alphabetized for your convenience.

A third way is through the Netflix Codes website. Here's how:

1. Visit Netflix-codes.com in any PC or mobile browser.

2. Find the genre or subgenre you want to explore.

3. Tap the code next to the genre or subgenre you want.

4. If you're on a device that has the Netflix app installed, the app should open and take you directly to the genre or subgenre you chose. If you don't have the app installed, it'll open Netflix through the browser and you can view the specific movies and shows available.

5. Tap the title you want to watch, and it'll start playing.

Finally, if you're comfortable with creating custom URLs, you can use Netflix codes manually in your browser. Here's how:

1. Visit Netflix-codes.com on any PC or mobile browser.

3. In another tab, type in http://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/INSERTNUMBER, but replace INSERTNUMBER with the specific genre or subgenre code. For instance,  http://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/81466194 will take you to "90-Minute Movies."

4. If done correctly, you'll be taken to Netflix to peruse the titles available in that section.

Simply repeat this process the next time you find a code for a Netflix category you'd like to explore. You can do this as many times as you'd like.
