Designer Arne Norell was born in 1917 in Åsele, Sweden, and was active in the postwar era—at the height of international fascination with Scandinavian design. Little biographical information is available about his formative years, but we do know that he opened a furniture workshop in Stockholm in 1954. In 1958, he launched his eponymous manufacturing company, Møbel AB Arne Norell, on a two-acre farm in Småland. Through the course of his prolific career, this idyllic setting remained Norell’s central source of inspiration and the site where he designed and produced all of his own furniture until he passed away in 1971.

Norell is often praised for pioneering “conceptual” furniture, because he employed traditional materials—leather, turned wood, bentwood, and metal, for example—in unexpected forms, often with lyrical results. His designs have an affinity with those of Danish designer  Kaare Klint  (1888-1954), who, a generation before, brought time-honored, vernacular forms into modernist expression. In fact, Klint’s iconic  Safari Chair  (1933) inspired Norell to create the  Sirocco Safari Chair  (1964), which is lightweight, collapsible, and held together by leather support straps instead of glue or screws. Norell’s wood-framed  Inka   Armchair ,  Indra Sofa , and  Ilona   Sofa  (design dates unverified) are likewise held together by leather.

While Norell’s designs found a solid market within his lifetime, his greatest recognition came posthumously: The British Furniture Manufacturers Association awarded Norell’s low-slung, steel-framed, leather-clad  Ari Chair  (1966) “Show Piece of the Year” in 1973. Norell’s pieces have become increasingly collectible in the 2010s.

Today, Norell’s daughter and son-in-law, Marie Norell-Möller and Thomas Möller, carry on his work, operating under the name Norell Møbel AB. In 2014, the company celebrated its 60 th  anniversary. It’s the only Swedish company that has continuously manufactured the entirety of Norell’s catalogue since the 1950s.

This Hudson River Escape Brings Wood Paneling Into the 21st Century

A vintage map. A woman reading in front of a fireplace. A board game.

These are the inspiration photos that interior designer Stefania Skrabak of Art Home Garden Interiors received from her client before beginning work on this Ulster Park, New York , abode. Unlike most mood boards that feature color palettes and fabric swatches, these images provided something different—they presented experiences, illustrating how the client desired to feel and live in the space.

Low-profile furniture selections, like these Kontiki armchairs by Arne Norell , allow for unobstructed river views.

Cozy nooks with custom built-ins offer opportunities to show off personal items.

When Stefania inherited the project, the bones of the house were solid, but the interior was largely impersonal with quirky details that were not chosen with a woman’s needs in mind. Countertops were unusually tall, storage was lacking, and so was character. Yet, it was perched right along the Hudson River with expansive windows, unmatched views, and an overwhelming sense of serenity, just awaiting a more thoughtful point of view.

Nautical details, like bezel sconces, nod to the home’s location on the water, while Bellagio kitchen stools by Morelato continue the theme of low-profile furniture.

Hemlock paneling across the main rooms roots Stefania’s design in a modern cabin aesthetic, though restrained placement and clean lines allow for a sense of breathability without veering too far towards the rustic. The entire approach is defined by balance—a conscious steadiness between city and country, hard and soft, contemporary and eclectic, masculine and feminine. “With all the wood and stone and leather, I didn’t want the house to become too masculine or serious,” Stefania says. “I really wanted it to be about my client—and she has a very playful, fun, and feminine side to her personality,” she says. Vintage textiles juxtapose striking antico-honed Italian marble. Warm earthy hues contrast pops of rich jewel tones. Indoor and outdoor living seamlessly coexist, highlighting each other’s intrinsic beauty.

Adding storage and functionality was a main priority in the kitchen with custom cabinetry and a dual-island system.

Influenced by the water’s omnipresence, Stefania opted for nautical themes from decor elements to the layout’s functionality. The bezel sconces in the kitchen reference portholes on a ship, and the rugs’ graphic patterns allude to the geometry of seafaring vessels, while the shade in the outdoor dining area is made from an actual vintage sail. Plus, explains Stefania, “the best way to get a big punch out of a smaller room is to design it like a boat. Boats are very intentional in their use of space, everything has to be practical and multipurpose.” She pushed through the former breakfast nook to generate more countertop and island capacity, extending the kitchen’s dexterity. An antique armoire operates as both a bar and concealed storage, and elsewhere, each bedroom also accommodates a work-from-home corner.

Stefania chose to orient the living room in a way that optimizes the river views, offering their own artistic focal point and inviting an opening up to the outdoor fireplace. “When you consider the outdoors as part of the living space, you make the indoors feel bigger and you can enjoy the dual lifestyle reward,” she says. It’s all part of the multifunctional philosophy. If a fire is going on the deck, it can be enjoyed from all angles due to thoughtful positioning and low-profile furniture selections that don’t block windows.

Fabric from an actual vintage sail creates shade for the outdoor dining area.

A full outdoor kitchen featuring double refrigerators, a large-format grill, and dining table for eight guests is bolstered by several seating group arrangements, a wood-paneled hot tub, and a sauna, adding to the home’s square footage and getaway-from-the-city appeal.

Each bedroom features a working space, maximizing the homeowner’s ability to use this upstate retreat for both rest and productivity.

Textural details loom large throughout the space. In the bedrooms, soft linens and organic shapes add their own sense of lived-in coziness. “It all comes back to creating an experience,” says Stefania. “If we were working on a New York City apartment, we’d choose satins or something slinky. But out here, we’re looking for a little bit of grit to our fabrics,” she says. Striped blankets footing the beds were developed in-house and woven locally using sustainably sourced wool. Local furniture maker Nick D’Ambrosia of A.B.W. Designs contributed the custom dining table, kitchen cabinetry, and walnut office suites. And a touch of whimsy is imparted by vintage floral-covered dining chairs, antique accessories from Blue Barn Antiques , and colorful paintings by Scott Michael Ackerman .

More jewel tones provide pops of color in the otherwise muted primary suite.

The upstate escape exudes warmth, mixing a midcentury-modern mentality with dreamy cabin energy that invites nature in. And the sensory experience of the home feels a lot like those initial inspirational images.

Auction Terms

1. Goods purchased as consigned All goods are sold to the highest bidder in the condition in which they are found at hammer price and without liability for either the client or the auctioneer of any kind, including liability for measurements, weight, age and description. Cataloging is to the best of our knowledge. Any damage is not listed. It is up to the buyer to check the goods themselves or take the risk that these do not work and as there has been an inspection, complaints will NOT be accepted. Reservations are made for errors and defects.

2. VAT and fees An auction fee of 20% of the bid amount is added to the bid amount, however, a minimum of DKK 50 per catalog number. Both the bid amount and the auction fee are subject to applicable VAT (25%), i.e. the fee including VAT is 50%. For passenger cars, caravans and motorcycles, VAT is only added to the fee, so the fee including VAT on these items is 25%.

Payment for purchases must be made via bank transfer, card payment, or MobilePay. Cash and checks are NOT accepted as payment. Goods can only be handed over once the payment has been registered in our account.

It is possible to pay with the following cards:

  • Mastercard Debit

A card fee is charged for corporate cards and cards issued outside the EU/EEA. The card fee is 1.95% excluding VAT for DK corporate cards and 2.95% excluding VAT for EU/EEA corporate cards as well as cards issued outside the EU/EEA. The fee will only appear after entering the card number and will be shown on the final invoice after completing the payment. The fee displayed in the payment window includes VAT. When paying by card, the amount will be debited immediately. When paying for orders with added shipping, the amount will be debited immediately.

Goods can only be handed over once the payment is registered in our account.

4. Stricter rules for the collection of VAT: There are stricter requirements for documentation that the seller is entitled to VAT exemption in connection with pick-up purchases, where a foreign buyer collects goods from a Danish seller. For sales to another EU country/other foreign countries, the seller (Auktionshuset dab A/S) must charge VAT. VAT can be refunded under certain conditions. If the buyer collects the goods himself, the buyer must provide a declaration to the seller (Auktionshuset dab A/S) stating that the goods have been sent or transported from Denmark, the destination of the goods, the means of transport and registration number of the means of transport and that the goods have been received at the delivery address.

If someone else, e.g. a carrier, collects the goods for the buyer, the buyer must also bring a power of attorney and photo identification.

Please contact the auction house for detailed export instructions.

We must receive the documentation no later than 14 days after the last pick-up day. If the submitted documentation is sufficient according to SKATS rules, we will issue a credit note and a new invoice without VAT and then transfer the VAT to the buyer, less a handling fee of DKK 350.

5. License plates for vehicles License plates for vehicles are not included. Furthermore, it must be expected that only one key is included with the vehicle.

6. Pledge on vehicles Vehicles registered in the Central Register of Motor Vehicles (CRM) may have a registered mortgage. The buyer can check this in the vehicle register at www.tinglysning.dk. Auktionshuset dab A/S always checks this and ensures that any mortgage will be canceled in connection with the sale. However, mortgage holders (banks, financial institutions, tax authorities, etc.) rarely cancel a mortgage before receiving the proceeds of the sale. The buyer should therefore expect a cancellation period of 2-3 months. In rare cases, e.g. in the case of a forced sale through the enforcement court, it can be 4-5 months.

7. Damage during collection  Damage caused during collection and removal of purchased items shall be paid by the buyer or repaired at the buyer's expense.

8. Buyer's liability for purchased goods  The buyer is fully responsible for ensuring that purchased items meet all legal requirements before they are put into use. The buyer is also fully responsible for obtaining permission for the use of various software/patents etc. from the respective rights holders.

9. Transfer of risk after hammer price After hammer price, the items are at the buyer's expense and risk. In the event of damage to items during loading and unloading, the Auction House is not liable for compensation.

10. Delivery  Delivery takes place upon presentation of a paid invoice. Please note that delivery days MUST be observed. A longer deadline for delivery of goods may be permitted by prior agreement for goods that are to be dismantled.

Title does not pass to the buyer until payment and collection of items have been made in due time.

The buyer must present a paid invoice upon collection. Where the buyer has a haulier etc. pick up purchased items, they must bring an original copy, photocopy or fax copy of the paid invoice. All traffic in the auction area is at your own risk.

11. Loading upon delivery For insurance reasons, Auktionshuset dab does not provide forklifts, lifting trucks or personnel for loading items.

12. Defects in purchased goods The Danish Sale of Goods Act's rule on defects can be invoked in connection with purchases made as a private individual.  12.1 The rule on defects cannot be invoked if this is due to normal wear and tear, incorrect use, transport damage, breach of contract or damage that was present at the time of purchase. The buyer cannot make use of the remedy of defects if the defect was clearly described or shown at the time of purchase or collection. 12.2 The rule on defects cannot be used for the purchase of, among other things, food, health food, beverages, wine and software licenses where the seal has been broken. 12.3 If the buyer is entitled to use the rule on defects, the buyer must contact Auktionshuset dab A/S in writing within two years of the transfer of ownership from Auktionshuset dab A/S to the buyer. The buyer is responsible for returning the goods in the same condition as at the time of purchase. 12.4 If the rule on defects is invoked, the buyer cannot claim payment of interest on the purchase price or other expenses and losses. 12.5 If the rule on defects is invoked, the buyer is entitled to either exchange the goods, repair the goods, reduce the purchase price or cancel the purchase.

13. Right of withdrawal For private purchases of items on an online auction, the buyer has a 14-day right of return from the day the item is received. After this, the consumer has a further 14 days to return the goods. Any costs associated with the transportation of purchased items returned by the buyer are paid by the buyer. If the buyer exercises his right of withdrawal, Auktionshuset dab A/S will refund the payment immediately after the item has been returned and received by Auktionshuset dab. The Auction House dab reserves the right to assess abuse of the right of withdrawal, and the Auction House dab may therefore choose to TERMINATE the customer relationship and inactivate the customer's account.

Traders do not have the right of withdrawal according to current legislation

Arne Norell

Arne Norell ’s enduring designs mixed leather and metal as well as turned wood and bentwood in pieces that allowed the natural beauty of these materials to shine. Simple and casual yet sophisticated, his vintage sofas , lounge chairs and other furniture epitomize the Scandinavian modern style that took post–World War II design by storm.

Although he created versatile furnishings that promoted comfort along with style, Norell is lesser known than many other mid-century designers , with some of his work produced only after his death. Born in Åsele, Sweden, Norell opened a furniture workshop in Solna, just north of Stockholm, in 1954. In 1958, he established Møbel AB Arne Norell on a farm in Småland. (This region is also the birthplace of IKEA , which opened its first store that same year.) The beauty and tranquility of this location were a source of inspiration.

In Småland, Norell created his most well-known designs, among them the Inca armchair with visible wooden dowels and plush leather, the Indra and Ilona sofas and the spare but elegant wood-framed Sirocco chair (1964). For many of his designs, Norell looked to the same military-style campaign furniture that had, decades prior, inspired the revered Safari chair (1933) crafted by Kaare Klint , a legendary Danish designer and Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts professor who taught the likes of Hans Wegner , Ole Wanscher and others.

Like these earlier furniture designers, Norell was committed to making comfortable and practical furniture. Using leather and warm woods as the building blocks of his work, he eschewed glue and screws, instead securing his designs with buckles and leather straps. In 1973, Norell earned posthumous recognition from the British Furniture Manufacturers Association for his sumptuous Ari chair, a luxurious lounge set on a chrome-plated steel frame with foam cushions covered in leather.

During his lifetime, Norell’s work was popular among European interior designers. However, it became more widely known after 1971, when many of his designs were finally put into production. Norell’s furnishings, as well as work by his daughter Marie Norell-Möller and other Swedish designers, are still crafted by hand in the Aneby, Sweden, factory operated by Norell Furniture, which has remained a family-run company.

The conditions of the existence of sulfide phases in Fe–Ni–S alloys and four-component Fe–50 wt % Ni–0.001 wt % S– R ( R is an alloying or impurity element from the TCFE7 database) systems are studied using the Thermo-Calc software package and the TCFE7 database. The modification of nickel superalloys by calcium or magnesium is shown to increase their ductility due to partial desulfurization, the suppression of the formation of harmful sulfide phases, and the uniform formation of strong sulfides in the entire temperature range of metal solidification. The manufacturability of superalloys can decrease at a too high calcium or magnesium content because of the formation of intermetallics with a low melting temperature along grain boundaries.

19th Edition of Global Conference on Catalysis, Chemical Engineering & Technology

Victor Mukhin

  • Scientific Program

Victor Mukhin, Speaker at Chemical Engineering Conferences

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
