But if you wish to see the video (in Hindi) instead of reading it, here it is:

Places to visit in Gokul Govardhan

We’re listing places to visit in Gokul Govardhan as per what we’ve personally seen and from the Internet, starting from Govardhan, then Gokul. Consider the following map to understand the location of Gokul, Govardhan, and Mathura:

Govardhan Mathura Gokul Map - Places to Visit in Gokul Govardhan

Reaching Govardhan

You can reach Govardhan by covering a distance of 22 km from Mathura or 25 km from Vrindavan . Govardhan Hill was the first stop on our list.

Krishna once lifted the mystical Govardhan hill on his little finger to protect villagers from Lord Indra’s wrath, the deity of thunder and storm.

I had seen this incident many times in tableaux and shows, but witnessing it, in reality, would be an enjoyable and pleasing experience.

1. Daan Ghati Temple

While starting to do the Pad Yatra around the hill, you’ll come across a temple named Daan Ghati temple. It will mesmerize you at first glance, showing the life-size representation of the scene where Muralidhar has lifted a mountain on his Kani (pinky) finger, protecting villagers and animals.

Daan Ghati Temple - Places To Visit in Gokul Govardhan

As you might guess, Lord Shri Krishna is in Giriraj or Girdhari form at this place. Giri in Hindi means Hill or Mountain, Dhari means the bearer!

There are many more small temples in the temple complex, where people worship the stone form of the Lord.

2. Circumambulating Govardhan Hill/Parvat

Next up in the list of places to visit in Gokul Govardhan is Govardhan Hill.

The 21 km-long circumambulation of Govardhan Parvat starts from the right side of the Daan Ghati temple. We didn’t intend to but still went a few hundred meters in the circumambulation area.

I sensed a different feeling inside the devotees here; even the young children appeared full of zeal to do the circumambulation. Milk, Dandavat, and Sohni Seva circumambulation are some of the circumambulations that devotees perform here.

To facilitate the parikrama or circumambulation, you will find many carts of fruits, shoes, breakfast water, and shops all along the way.

The unique thing that appeared to me was that shops sold loose coins and Parle-G biscuits in bundles for devotees. You might also see some street vendors selling green grass, perhaps to serve the cows you meet during the circumambulation.

The Govardhan Hill is 21 feet high and has a significant width. You will see devotees worshiping stones from place to place here. Every single stone here is the landscape of Radha-Krishna.

Legends of Govardhan Hill

This legend happened in Dwapara Yuga, which tells that Shri Krishna didn’t want the people of Braj to worship Lord Indra for the rain. He believed that Indra must rain as it’s His duty. In response, Indra rained heavily for seven consecutive days, and the entire Braj submerged in water.

Govardhan Parvat - Places To Visit in Gokul Govardhan

Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill on his little finger to protect the people from this wrath, and all villagers and animals came under to save their lives. In the end, Krishna broke Indra’s pride, and later Indra realized his mistake and did everything in the right state and prayed to Krishna.

Visiting The Old Lanes of Gokul

Reaching gokul.

Up until now, we’ve seen Govardhan. Next up in the list of places to visit in Gokul Govardhan is Gokul village and around.

To reach, we took a local tuk-tuk from Mathura and arrived at Gokul after a 20-30 minutes ride.

BEWARE! As soon as you reach Gokul, many guides will approach you, ready to give you a tour of Gokul village and around for as low as 50 rupees. But they’ll be prepared to upsell you and use your insecurities and faith to juice out 100 times of what you paid to the guide.

Gokul Village - Places To Visit in Gokul Govardhan

Our advice? Have a thick skin belief in yourself and the God you’re visiting. If possible, do your research and play it safe – be your guide.

3. Chaurasi Khamba Temple (Nanda Bhavan)

You would first like to see the place in Gokul where Bal Krishna’s squeals once resonated – Nanda Bhavan, also known as Chaurasi Khamba (84 pillared building). Sri Krishna and his Dauji (Balaram Ji) got their name and spent their childhood in this building’s courtyard.

Climbing some stairs, you reach the main entrance, which opens towards a verandah. You can see Krishna’s childhood pastimes paintings on the walls. Along with the stone carvings, the artwork will fascinate you.

You will also find a vast and religiously significant tree in the courtyard. People tie red threads of wishes on it, believing that Lord Krishna hears all the wishes.

4. The Holy Sand of Raman Reti

Raman Reti, located at a distance of 2-3 km from Gokul, is essentially the sand where Krishna played in his childhood. You’ll see devotees playing, running, and lying in this sand.

In the Dwapar Yuga, when Shri Krishna was in a child form, Yashoda Mata sent him to the forest to graze the cows. That forest is today the place of Raman Reti. Lord Shri Krishna used to play here with elder brother Balaram Ji and other Gwalas . The entire credit for its present form goes to Saint Gyanadas Ji, who understood the importance of this place in the 18th century and shaped it to help devotees offer prayers.

Sages Kutiyas at Raman Reti - Places To Visit in Gokul Govardhan

There is a park next to it. You will see deer, spurts, and ducks roaming around. You will see many huts of the same size, homes to sages and saints. In all honesty, Raman Reti is one of the best places to visit in Gokul Govardhan.

Fun Fact: Holi is played here with sand instead of colors!

5. Brahmand Ghat’s Legend

Situated near Raman Reti and on the banks of Yamuna, there is an interesting legend associated with Brahmand Ghat.

Once, while playing, the child Krishna ate mud. When this thing reached Yashoda Mata, she came running to her son and asked him to open his mouth to let the soil come out.

But what she saw inside his mouth surprised her – a whole picture of the universe, aka Brahmand in Hindi. This incident convinced Yashoda Maa that her child is not an ordinary kid. And the place where this incident happened is therefore named Brahmand Ghat.

Brahmand Ghat - Places To Visit in Gokul Govardhan

At present, local administration maintains this place and keeps it up from a tourism perspective. Nearby the Ghat, there’s a Brahmanda Bihari temple dedicated to Lord Shri Krishna.

For a peaceful experience and to spend some time in solitude by the banks of Yamuna, come to Brahmand Ghat, one of the best places to visit in Gokul Govardhan.

Other places to visit in Gokul Govardhan

6. shri thakur rani ghat.

According to mythology, Yamuna Mata herself appeared to Shri Vallabhacharya Ji after listening to Yamunashtakam (a song dedicated to the Yamuna Ji) at this place.

7. Gokulnathji Temple

Situated at a height behind this temple is a pond called Mansi Ganga. According to the stories, when Yashoda Mata expressed her desire to bathe in the Ganges, Prabhu said that he could bring the Ganges here himself. And this is how Mansi Ganga came here.

Important Points and Suggestions

  • You can quickly get a bus, tuk-tuk, or cab for Govardhan from Vrindavan and Mathura.
  • If you want to do Govardhan Parikrama, then go early in the morning. Since the circumambulation is 21 km, go with complete preparation.
  • It’s easy to visit Gokul from Mathura with your private vehicle.
  • It isn’t easy to get a tuk-tuk in Gokul for Ramna Reti and Brahmanda Ghat. Even if you get it, they’ll charge a lot of money.
  • The best time to visit is all year round, but Holi is the preferred time if you are looking for a memorable trip. If you are planning to go in summer, keep a light cloth and water bottle with you.
  • Sit for some time in peace on Raman Reti and Brahmanda Ghat and reflect on those things in your mind. Lose yourself in devotion to God.
  • Commute between all the places to visit in Gokul Govardhan isn’t easily available.

Shri Krishna’s life can teach us a lot of qualities like love, sacrifice, compassion, charity, self-control, and friendship. A highly revered book of Hinduism, Bhagavad Gita , captures the dialogue between Lord Krishna and the archer Arjuna. Simply skimming this book gives me mental clarity when I feel lost in life.

Prabhu resides in Braj Bhoomi (Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Barsana, Gokul). Krishna lives in every person and animal here and in all inanimate things. Everything you will see in Mathura and around somehow relates to Lord Shri Krishna.

Govardhan Hill is a holy place for Hindus, located in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. It is believed that Lord Krishna lifted this hill on his little finger to protect the people of Vrindavan from the wrath of Indra, the king of gods. Govardhan Hill is also known as Giriraj, which means the king of mountains.

It is a popular pilgrimage destination for devotees of Lord Krishna, who perform a circumambulation or parikrama around the hill as a mark of devotion and surrender. Govardhan Hill is also home to many temples, ashrams, sacred groves, and natural attractions that reflect the beauty and grace of Lord Krishna.

In this article, we will explore the legend, significance, and attractions of Govardhan Hill, and provide you with some practical tips and suggestions for visiting this sacred site of Hinduism in Mathura.

The Legend of Govardhan Hill

According to the Hindu scriptures, Govardhan Hill was once a part of Mount Meru, the mythical mountain that is considered the center of the universe. It was brought to Vrindavan by Pulastya Muni, a sage who wanted to worship it. However, he left it on the banks of the Yamuna river when he went to take a bath, and Lord Krishna, who was a young boy then, lifted it and placed it in Vrindavan. He declared that Govardhan Hill was his own manifestation and that he would accept the offerings made to it.

Later, when Indra, the king of gods, saw that the people of Vrindavan had stopped worshipping him and started worshipping Govardhan Hill instead, he became angry and decided to punish them. He sent a torrential rain and storm to drown Vrindavan. To save his devotees, Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill on his little finger and held it like an umbrella for seven days and nights. He also created a miracle that made the hill weightless and provided food and water to the people and animals who took shelter under it. Indra realized his mistake and apologized to Lord Krishna, who forgave him and restored peace and harmony in Vrindavan.

This story symbolizes the power and love of Lord Krishna, who protects his devotees from all dangers and difficulties. It also shows the importance of devotion and surrender to the supreme lord, who is the source of everything. Govardhan Hill is thus revered as a manifestation of Lord Krishna himself, and as a witness to his divine pastimes.

The parikrama is also a way of seeking the blessings and mercy of Lord Krishna, who fulfills the desires and wishes of his devotees.

Govardhan Hill Mathura Timings

Govardhan Hill, also known as the Giri Raj, is located 22 kilometres from Vrindavan. According to Lord Krishna, Govardhan Parvat (hill) is not distinct from him, as mentioned in the Holy Bhagavad Gita. As a result, all of his worshippers worship the clean rocks of the hill in the same way they adore his idol. The hill is built of sandstone and rises 80 feet tall with a perimeter of 38 kilometres.

History of Govardhan Hill Mathura

According to legend, Lord Krishna raised the Govardhan Hill with one finger as a kid to save his hometown, Mathura, from heavy rains and thunderstorms. As a result, this hill is sacred to all Krishna devotees. First, devotees visit the hill on Guru Purnima and perform the Govardhan Puja post-Diwali. Then, they walk 23 kilometres barefoot around the mountain in a 'parikrama to pay their obeisance.'

#Trivia- After Lord Krishna protected the village, he instructed everyone to worship the hill, and that's why Govardhan Puja is celebrated after Diwali.

Location of Govardhan Hill Mathura

The Govardhan hill is located at Aanyor, Mathura, Uttar Pradesh.

How did Govardhan Hill Get Its Name?

There are two ways to interpret Govardhan Hill's name. The Hindi term for the sacred cow is 'Gau' (Go), and the shelter where cows stay is 'Vardhan.'

In contrast, 'Go' in Sanskrit means senses, and 'Vardhan' means to control, indicating that it is a spot where one can keep their thoughts under control and devote their life in the admiration of Lord Krishna.

Structures at the govardhan hill.

The Govardhan Hill has homes and construction dating back to the 17th century. However, according to 2013 sources, there is no archaeological evidence of older remnants.

Sandstone Monument and Kusum Sarovar Lake

Sandstone Monument and Kusum Sarovar Lake are two notable sights on Govardhan Hill.

Sandstone monument is a historical monument built of sandstone atop the sacred Govardhan Hill. The Jatt ruler, Maharaja Surajmal's chhatri, stands tall here.

The historical structure, complete with cenotaphs, was built in honour of Jawahar Singh's father, Maharaja Surajmal, in 1764. The main tomb, which lies in the centre, is 57 square feet and stands on a finely decorated pedestal.

Two other ancient constructions stand on both sides of his tomb. These tombs are of Maharaja Surajmal’s two queens, Kishori and Hansiya. In addition, a 460-foot-long terrace supports the whole building. Finally, the pavilion acts as a roof to protect both ends of the structure.

Kusum Sarovar, atop Govardhan Hill, is also known as the Lake of Flowers. It is because the sweet-smelling flowers, such as Champa, bel, Kusum, chameli, etc., once bloomed in all its glory right here.

#Trivia: As per folklore, Muni Ashtavakra performed deep penance on the banks of the Sarovar to get a glimpse of Radha-Krishna.

The Kusum Sarovar is open every day of the year between 6 AM and 6 PM.

Giriraj Temple

The Giriraj Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna, also known as Giriraj Ji, is one of the most prominent temples on Govardhan Hill. The temple is an important Hindu pilgrimage site.

Shri Chaitanya Temple

Another sacred place on Govardhan Hill is Shri Chaitanya Temple, built of red sandstone and adorned with murals of Krishna and Radha.

Radha Kund Mandir

Radha Kund Mandir, at Radha Kund, is where Lord Krishna slew Arista, the bull demon, and then took a bath in the Radha Kund pond to purify himself. As a result, the temple receives a large number of worshippers every year. As per legend, Radha and Krishna spent a considerable amount of time here.

The story we heard as kids…

After fighting a demon disguised as a bull, Radha instructed Lord Krishna to cleanse himself by bathing in every sacred river in the universe. It led to the birth of this fascinating tourist destination on Govardhan hill. Hearing this, Lord Krishna laughed and struck his heel on the earth, creating a big pond, called Shyama Kund, at this spot. All the river goddesses emerged in front of Krishna and filled his pond with water, thus helping Krishna cleanse himself.

Radha and her sakhis (friends) were displeased by Lord Krishna's ability to make the kund, and they resolved to dig another kund even more beautiful than Krishna's. The kund, which is now known as Radha Kund, stands adjacent to the Shyama Kund. Krishna persuaded Radha to take water from his kund; however, Radharani declined the offer and wanted to fetch the water from Mansi-Ganga. Since the journey from Mansi-Ganga was far and challenging, she and her friends took water from Shyama kund.

After this, Krishna took a bath in Radha Kund and proclaimed that whoever bathed here would attain Radha's love for him. Radha took a dip in Shyama Kund and declared that whoever bathed here would achieve Krishna's love for her.

Radha Kund is open all year, and devotees can come anytime between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

#Trivia- Despite the popularity of the Radha Krishna romantic story, there is no mention of Radha in the Shrimad Bhagavatam, Mahabharata, or Harivansham, which is about Lord Krishna's life. However, there is a mention of Radha in Bhagavata, in Vishnu Purana.

Mansi Ganga Lake

It is the largest lake in central Govardhan. According to legend, anybody who bathes in Mansi Ganga gets cleansed of their sins. Thus, the circumambulation of Govardhan Hill begins and concludes here.

Danghati Shrine

Danghati Temple is a famous temple on Govardhan Hill. The name comes from 'Daan' (donation) and 'ghati' (valley). The deity at this temple is built in rock and decorated by the priests to resemble Lord Krishna holding Govardhan Parvat on his little finger.

Paintings show the hill as a bull and a peacock, Krishna in a cave, and the hill as a food 'Annakut' with floods caused by Indra and the Yamuna River.

#Trivia: Legend goes, Lord Indra was unhappy with people praying to Lord Krishna and not praying for rain. In his arrogance, he sent heavy rains and floods and thus made it difficult for the people to survive the weather. Upon learning of sacrifice worship for Indra, Krishna called upon him to show him the significance of Karna and carrying out ones' responsibilities without expecting anything in return. He reminded him it was his duty to protect his people and take care of them.

Things to do at Govardhan Hill Mathura

Several devotees gather around the hill on the auspicious dates of Guru Purnima and Govardhan Puja. The full parikrama is roughly 23 kilometres long and takes about 5-6 hours to complete.

It begins in Manasi-Ganga Kund, goes via Radha Kund Village, right around the hill while performing pilgrimage to Lord Harideva. Devotees visit several holy places on the way to this highly sacred pilgrimage in Uttar Pradesh, including Radha Kund, Shyama Kund, Daan Ghati Mandir, Mukharvind, Kusuma Sarovar, Ramochana, and Puchari. However, there is no set time restriction for finishing the parikrama.

With ardent devotion and love for the Lord, devotees undertake different types of parikrama around the Govardhan hill.

Walking parikrama : People walk clockwise with the hill on their right and end the parikrama at the same point.

Doodh parikrama : You hold a pot of milk with a tiny hole below the pot and continuously offer milk as you complete the parikrama.

Sohni Seva parikrama : Devotees complete this parikrama with a broom. They continuously sweep the sides of the hill to complete the circumambulation.

Dandvat parikrama : Devotees complete the parikrama by moving with their whole body against the ground. It is the most challenging way to achieve the parikrama, and people take around ten days to complete it.

Couple Dandvat parikrama : Couples undertake this parikrama to mark their togetherness. They seek the blessings of Radha-Krishna.

108 Dandvat parikrama : The toughest one yet; sadhus undertake this parikrama with 108 stones with them and perform the Dandvat 108 times in one spot. It may take more than a year before they complete even one parikrama.

Such is the devotion to Lord Krishna by all his devotees.

If you intend to do the parikrama, it is best to begin early in the morning (unless it is a Dandavat parikrama) so that you may finish before dark.

The tomb at the Kusum lake is lavishly decorated with magnificent murals showing Radha and Lord Krishna's paintings inside. In addition, it houses a copy of Lord Krishna and Radha's lotus feet. Govardhan Puja

Devotees carry out Govardhan Puja by constructing a statue of Lord Krishna, clutching the sacred hillock of Govardhan out of fresh cow dung. Depending on whether it is a community or solo worship, the figure is large or small. Devotees further embellish Krishna's cow dung structure with tasty dried rice, colourful powder, and jewellery, among other things.

The festival begins with traditional Vedic practises of prayer to Krishna. Then, devotees bring flowers, incense, and other ritual materials while parikrama around the cow dung figure clockwise. A minimum of 56 delicacies, also known as "Chappan Bhog," is cooked from scratch as a token of devotion.

An Insight into Govardhan Tourism

A town known for its mythology and heritage, Govardhan owes its significance to Lord Krishna. The legend says that the locals of the villagers were one-day preparing for annual offering to Lord Indra when Krishna saw this and decided to discuss it with the villagers. Lord Krishna argued with villagers over the importance of Dharma which the villagers need to follow. He said that the villagers should do their duty and focus on their crops and cattle. Agreeing to Krishna’s philosophy, villagers decided to withhold the offering to Indra. Angered over this, Indra decided to flood the village with continuous rains. In order to protect the villagers, Lord Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan and the villagers took shelter under it, which eventually led to Indra conceding defeat to a young Lord Krishna.

Another legend states that Govardhan Hill after which the town is named is cursed. Once it was a giant mountain, today the mountain is reduced to just a small hillock owning to a curse placed on it. Legend states that the Rishi Pulastya placed a curse on the mountain that Govardhan Hill would reduce one mustard seed size every day. The story goes that Rishi Pulastya requested Dronakala that he too wished to take his son from Mathura to Kashi.

Dronakala gave permission with a condition that Rishi would have to carry Govardhan and he could not keep Govardhan down before Kashi. The Rishi agreed to the condition and the journey began. While passing through Brij Mandal, which was frequently visited by Lord Krishna, Govardhan wanted to feel the divine presence of Lord Krishna. In order to do so, Govardhan intentionally became heavy, forcing Rishi to keep him down. This led to Rishi cursing the hill. A parikrama(circumambulation) performed around the Govardhan hill is considered auspicious and generally, pilgrims perform dandavata (full prostration) Parikrama. This ritual is one of the must things to do as a spiritual purification and there are many variations of it that you can take part in.

An ardent believer of Dharma and Karma, Krishna’s teaching still reverberates through the town’s premises. With numerous temples dedicated to Lord Krishna to the famous Govardhan hill, the town is a popular pilgrimage destination in Uttar Pradesh. It also boasts of two more pilgrimage attractions - Kusum Sarovar and Manasi Ganga.

Mathura is located on the banks of the Yamuna River and is considered a sacred city for Hinduism. The deity Krishna, who was born about 5 thousand years ago, spent his youth in this city. In it we can find many temples, hence its nickname of the city of a thousand temples.

Pro Tip – Do not wear glasses, scarves loose, or beanie-like stuff as this place is full of monkeys snatching it all from you and you will have to get It back torn or destroyed only. Don’t hang easy-to-snatch purses as well. Keep Parshad safe too.

Iskcon Temple Vrindavan

Last for day one is the ultimate dive into spirituality, serenity and where your soul will feel like dancing. Reach there by 7.30 to witness the enchanting soul enrichment experience. The music, the Bhajans and the devotees dancing in joy are all magic in the air there. Iskcon is there in most of the cities but Vrindavan, the home of the love of Radha Krishna, has a breathtaking view. Visit the temple to vibe along with the devotees, then take a tour of the museum within the temple itself. Later there is a segment devoted to the founder of Iskcon, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami. After the whole visit join the dance of divinity out there in Iskcon.

After spending a beautiful evening there, have your dinner in Govindam itself for the good quality food. Taste the bhakti and the food simultaneously in Iskcon while you mark the day’s end.

Go to bed early as the next day starts early!

Nidhivan Vrindavan

Embark your Day 2 with Aarti at Iskcon only. Timing – 4.30 am, reach early for more time in there and leave from there as soon as it gets over to witness the doors opening of Nidhivan. This is a wholesome experience here in Nidhivan witnessing the changes that occurred while the temple was closed. As soon as the doors to the temple open, the priest there shows you the eaten food and other stuff evidencing the night Maha Raas happened while the van was closed. It is believed that all the trees are the Gopies , Krishna performs Maha Raas with them. Radha is worshipped there and the common enchanting you will hear there is “ Radhe Radhe Shyam Milade!”

Keshi Ghat Mathura Vrindavan

Enjoy the early morning chilled environment of the Ghat on the sacred Yamuna with devotees bathing in there. Light the diyas in the river, talk to locals and live the vibe of Vrindavan.

This Ghat is where Lord Krishna killed dangerous Keshi sent by Kansa. Visit 12 other ghats while boating there.

Pro Tip – Visit the Ghat early morning and then a few temples and come back to the ghat for boating. While boating ask your rider to take you in the Yamuna where you can get down from the boat and enjoy walking in the freezing water. In the months like December and January, you will find Seagulls too which is the most enchanting scene to witness over Yamuna.

Govind dev Ji

Govind Dev Ji

Next after visiting Keshi Ghat is Govind Dev Ji. This temple was constructed in 1590 by King Man Singh of Amer. In 1670, during the reign of Aurangzeb, it was plundered. Later, in the first half of the 18th century, Raja Sawai Jai Singh established the idol of Govind Dev Ji in Jaipur.

The architecture of this temple is different from other Hindu temples, it is more like a Haveli style witnessing the mix of Hindu and Arabic architectural styles. Also, unlike most of the Hindu Temples, it doesn’t have scenes depicted on the walls of the temple.

Rangji Temple

Shri Rangji Mandir Vrindavan

Rangji temple, next in places to visit in Mathura and Vrindavan, is a replica of the southern temple in South India. It has three Attractions other than the temple itself, known as, Vahan Mahal, Sheesh Mahal and Leela Mahal presenting the ancient stuff.

The biggest temple and the calmest one in the Vrindavan is this temple. It has got the Marathi essence, Southern essence and the Uttar Pradesh essence altogether. This was a temple made by someone anonymously and donated to Swami Rangacharya after whose name it is still known. Shri Rangnath temple is the true witness of devotion and selfless bhakti setting an example.

Gopeshwar Mahadev

Gopeshwar Mahadev Vrindavan

Followed by Rangji, visit the divine temple of Lord Shiva. The vibe near this temple is incomparable. Step into the temple with a beautiful flower basket available outside and take the blessing of Shiva while pouring water And flowers over the Shiva Lingam.

Talk to Nandi after the divine experience of Shivling offerings. Whisper your wishes in the ears of Nandi.

It is believed that one night Sharad Purnima, Radha Rani and Gopis got along with Lord Shiva and he expressed his wish to be a part of Raas Leela. Being a male he was not permitted by Vrinda Devi. In this wish, Shiva started worshipping Radha Rani and finally got permission. Finally, he has to emerge as a gopi to be a participant in the Raas Leela. Moreover, Krishna being a devotee of Lord Krishna recognized him and named him Gopeshwar.

Banshi Vat Vrindavan

Popularly Known as Bansi Vat Maha Raas Temple, this is next on the list of must-visit places in Mathura and Vrindavan. Small and the calmest place there in Vrindavan announcing the love and devotion towards the Maha Raas of Lord Krishna. There is that tree under which he used to play his flute and the magical sound used to attract people there. With depictions all over that place, it feels like happening there at that moment itself. It also has a Charan Mandir , founded in 1820 by Acharya Shri Girdhari Sharan Dev. The other Mandir was built By King Oyal with Radha Krishna idols there.

Radha Raman ji

Shri Radha Raman Ji Vrindavan

After spending a handful of half an hour in Banshi Vat, reach Radha Raman temple by 10.10 am to witness the opening of the curtains and the grand Aarti initiation. The vibe there is amazing, serenity all around in a crowded yet tranquil environment.

It is one of the seven temples that the Thakur of Vrindavan owns. There has been an immortal flame burning in the kitchen since the establishment of this temple. Image source (Shri Radha Raman Ji Temple)

Shri Radha Madan Mohan Ji

Madan Mohan Temple Mathura

Next in this line is the Madan Mohan Ji temple, which is quite far from all the above-mentioned temples. After these temples and a boat ride at Kashi, one can visit this temple. It is believed to have been constructed by the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, 5000 years back. Later, Advaita Acharya founded it at the base of an old Banyan tree and entrusted the worship of Madana Mohan to his disciple, Purusottama Chaube.

During the Mughal invasion, the idol from this temple was taken to Jaipur by King Jai Singh and later shifted to Karauli by King Gopal Singh. It is said to be the exact resemblance of Krishna from the waist down. It is traditional Hindu, Nagara-style architecture. Also, the last one is for Vrindavan.

Govardhan Parikrama

Kusum Sarovar Govardhan Vrindavan Mathura

After done with all the Vrindavan by 1 pm, the next activity is Govardhan Parikrama. It is divided into two segments: Badi Parikrama has three spots and second is Choti Parikrama has four spots on the way. In total, it is 23 km, with two options again, either to do it by walking or use a rickshaw which will be easily available nearby. It takes almost 7-8 hours barefoot and 3 hours if you take the latter option.

This is the Parikrama of Govardhan Hill. As per mythology, Lord Krishna lifted this hill with his little finger to save the people of the region from the wrath of Inder Dev, the God of Rain.

Starting with the Badi Parikrama –

  • Daanghati (Girraj Ji)
  • Poonchrri ka Lautha
  • Mukharvind Temple

The next is Choti Parikrama –

  • Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
  • Radha Kund
  • Kusum Sarovar
  • Mansi Ganga

End your Day 2 with this and a wholesome dinner followed by a walk in the local market.

Gokul Vrindavan Raman Reti

The next day starts with visiting the old lanes of Gokul. Start with Chaurasi Khamba Temple where Bal Krishna’s sequels are resonated. It has 84 pillars where the brothers, Krishna and Balaram spent their childhood.

Next in line is the Holy sand of Raman Reti, located around 2-3 km from Gokul. It is the San where Krishna spent his childhood playing in there. In Dwapar Yuga, he used to go there to graze the cows. Also, there is a park next to it pulling you closer to the natural beauty and an inhabitant of deer and ducks. In this place Holi is played with the sand, not the colours.

Finally, visit the Brahmand Ghat. The story   behind this is once Krishna ate the soil and when Yashoda came to know about it he forced him to open his mouth to let the soil out and witnessed the whole universe in there, aka Brahmand in Hindi. Hence, there is this Ghat with a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna.
