What To Do on A Rainy Day on Cape Cod (15+ Options)

Posted on Published: 01/12/2024

Cape Cod in the summer can be a wonderful family summer vacation. There are so many gorgeous beaches, restaurants with outdoor seating, and other activities that take advantage of the beautiful Cape Cod summer weather.

However, sometimes there is rain in the forecast, with Mother Nature derailing your perfectly planned vacation. Luckily there are plenty of other things to do on Cape Cod when it rains, beyond visiting the beautiful beaches.

Be sure to check the weather forecast, because in some cases, the day may not be a total washout. You may be able to get in a few hours at the beach for a partial beach day, before having to head indoors.

Depending on where you are staying, there may even be some fun rainy-day activities right there. Some of the popular Cape Cod resorts offer indoor pools, and the Cape Codder Resort (soon to be a Margaritaville Resort) offers an indoor water park. Your vacation rental home may have board games and other kid-friendly activities, and many vacation rentals have several TVs for a movie day.

Looking to venture out for rainy-day activities? Cape Cod offers lots of options. If you’d like to leave your hotel room or vacation home, here are some great things to do on a rainy day on Cape Cod.

Note that some of these activities may have reduced hours, especially in the off-season. Visit the individual websites to get specific details.

When it is raining on Cape Cod, keep in mind that everyone will be looking to do these rainy-day activities, so if reservations are necessary, make them as soon as possible.

Cape cod central railroad.

See a different side of Cape Cod by taking a train ride. The Cape Cod Central Railroad offers various excursion trains including one along the Cape Cod Canal, and another offering a tour of the Cape from either Hyannis or West Barnstable.

There are also dinner trains, including the 21+ Rails and Ales Beer Tasting with local beers, and the lunch train offering a three-course meal. The lunch train is open to all ages, while a dinner train is offered for those aged 12+.

Reservations can be made on their website and do book up in the busy season.

Bowling and Game Rooms

Another popular Cape Cod rainy day activity is bowling. There are several options on Cape Cod, and they also offer other activities to keep you busy.

In Orleans, you’ll find the ALLEY Bowling and BBQ. In addition to candlepin bowling lanes, it also has a BBQ restaurant and arcade games.

The Ten Pin Eatery and Arcade is a venue located at the Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis. There are lots to do there, including bowling lanes (with food service), a full-service restaurant, laser tag, escape rooms , a golf simulator, and virtual reality. It’s conveniently located in the mall, and reservations for bowling are not accepted.

The Ryan Family Amusements located in South Yarmouth is located not too far from the Whydah Pirate Museum (in West Yarmouth ). It offers ten-pin bowling, candlepin bowling, a game room, and ax throwing.

It also has a full bar and offers appetizers. A bowling alley can be reserved online to save time.

There’s also a Ryan Family Amusements location in Buzzards Bay. It has candlepin bowling and a game room. Like the Yarmouth location, lanes can be reserved in advance.

Entrance to the Whydah Pirate Museum

Whydah Pirate Museum

I’d recommend visiting the Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth , even if it’s not raining. This unique museum features the remains of the Whydah shipwrecked pirate ship. It’s open year-round and offers timed tickets. It’s a great place for the whole family to visit.

Once you watch a video at the entrance of the museum, you can visit at your own pace. There are various interactive exhibits that you can read to learn more. The highlight of the museum, in my opinion, is the world’s only authenticated pirate treasure.

I think the museum does a great job of explaining how pirates lived while dispelling legends that are untrue. It’s worth visiting and is one of the best things to do in rainy weather. Be sure to purchase your timed ticket in advance, as it’s a very popular summer destination, especially in the rain.

Once you are done, grab lunch or dinner at Captain Parkers, a seafood restaurant in front of the museum. It’s one of our favorite local restaurants in Yarmouth .

Live Shows on Cape Cod

Cape Cod also offers summer stock theater, at the Cape Playhouse in Dennis – the oldest professional summer theater in the US. Several different shows are offered each summer at this performing arts center – each one running for about ten days.

The Cape Rep Theatre in Brewster offers both an indoor and outdoor theater. Some of these are children’s shows while others are for a wider audience.

There’s also the Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis, which typically hosts national acts and tribute bands throughout the season. Along with its sister theater, the Music Circus in Cohasset, it’s one of two of the longest continuously operated tent theaters in the round. You can see their full schedule and purchase tickets on their website .

Movie Theaters on Cape Cod

Movie theaters are a great rainy-day option on Cape Cod, especially if you haven’t gotten around to seeing the latest new releases. There are several theaters located across the Cape. Some show independent films while others show first-run blockbusters. These theaters include:

  • Entertainment Cinemas in South Dennis, MA
  • Entertainment Cinemas in Falmouth, MA
  • Cape Cinema (independent films and live performances) in Dennis
  • Regal Cinemas in Hyannis at the Cape Cod Mall
  • Regal Cinemas in Mashpee at Mashpee Commons
  • Heritage Theaters in Sandwich

There’s also the popular Wellfleet Drive-In Cinema in Wellfleet, although you may not want to do that in the rain.

Sign for shops in Chatham MA including Lily Pulitzer and Blue Coral

Shopping on Cape Cod

When the weather isn’t cooperating with my beach plans, I go shopping. There are so many great shopping options on Cape Cod – from smaller, local chains to independent shops.

Most of the shopping areas on the Cape involve some outdoor walking, so you may want to be prepared with an umbrella. There are some wonderful small towns with cute downtown shopping areas on Main Street- including Hyannis, Falmouth, Chatham, and Provincetown.

For some larger stores, restaurants, and cinemas, visit Mashpee Commons. This outdoor shopping center has lots of options and is a great place to shop. There’s also the Cape Cod Mall, although most of those stores are typical chain mall stores.

Museums on Cape Cod

In addition to the Whydah Pirate Museum, several other Cape Cod museums are great for rainy days (or even sunny days). They include:

  • Cape Cod Children’s Museum in Mashpee (best for younger kids)
  • The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History
  • Sandwich Glass Museum

Rain Gear to Bring for Rainy Days in Acadia

If you are planning a trip to Acadia National Park in fall , or if rain is in the forecast, you’ll want to bring some high quality rain gear. That way you and your family can still enjoy the outdoors, and stay dry (or mostly ;).

Here are some of our top recommendations:

  • Light weight rain jacket – Depending on the season a light weight raincoat or shell would be a good idea. Columbia and Eddie Bauer are our go-to brands as a family for affordable and quality outdoor gear. This Columbia Men’s jacket i s one my partner has used for the last few years and loves it . Here’s a quality Columbia rain jacket for women .
  • Fashionable Rain Jackets for Women – if you are looking for a bit more fashion & function, the Women’s Pardon My Trench Rain Jacket is a fun choice.
  • Muddy Buddy for Toddlers – Full suit Muddy Buddies have saved many a rainy day in our family. Toddlers LOVE jumping in puddles and getting dirty. Wrap them all up, then rain becomes a fun activity, and less work for you.
  • Rain Jackets for Kids – Again, Columbia gear is our go-to for our fast growing kids. Here’s our favorite Columbia rain jacket for girls and here’s a good good rain jacket option for boys . They come in many cool colours.
  • Waterproof Backpack / Cover – A Waterproof Backpack is essential for keeping your extra layers, cell phones, cameras and snacks dry. Sometimes we even use a dry bag inside our backpack or bring along a waterproof cell phone pouch for extra protection for our electronics.

Having rain gear on hand will make your trip more enjoyable in case of Acadia National Park rainy days.

My family always teasingly calls me “safety first” as I try to be prepared for anything, including weather. It’s saved us hassles countless times. My Girl Guide leaders of my youth would be so proud.

Acadia is just one of the many things to do in Maine.

Want to travel more as a family?

Acadia rainy day activities, 1. walk on the carriage road.

Carriage roads colorful fall leaves.

A walk on the carriage roads or trails is a great way to experience the beauty of Acadia National Park in the rain. The majority of paths are wide and gravel, so not as likely to be muddy or slippery.

With over 45 miles to choose from, you won’t lack for ideas. Some favorite carriage roads for visitors are:

  • Eagle Lake Carriage Trail – This 6 mile trail winds its way around Eagle Lake and you can access it from Eagle Lake Road.
  • Witch Hole Pond Carriage Trail – Access it from the Eagle Lake Road parking lot and go south. Or start at the Duck Brook Bridge.
  • Jordan Pond – walk the west side of the pond along the carriage road, following the high route for fantastic views of the pond.

In spring, certain roads may be closed due to the “mud season” so just be sure to respect any closures.

2. Drive the Park Loop Road

Overcast, Acadia Park Loop Road.

When in doubt, road trip it out! Taking a scenic drive along the Park Loop Road is a great way to see the east side of Acadia National Park, and Mount Desert Island in the rain. This Loop should be at the top of everyone’s Acadia itinerary.

The full 27 mile (43km) road will take you about 3-4 hours to complete anyway. Best part….you can stop at gorgeous viewpoints, beaches and other attractions, as the rain lets up along the way.

3. Enjoy A Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride

Feeling a bit lazy? Then the horse-drawn carriages ride may be more your speed for taking in the Carriage Roads.

LOCAL TIP: They go out rain or shine, unless there’s been thunder and lightening or there’s a strong downpour. Reservations strongly recommended.

4. Take Epic Photos of Thunder Hole

Stormy and rainy days just might be the best time to take a photo of Thunder Hole.

When the waves crash against to shore, they shoot high up into the air, and make the sound of…..you guessed it thunder.

Rainy foggy ocean waves crahings against rocks in Acadia National Park.

5. Dance Barefoot in the Sand in the Rain

sandcastle mound with small toy tractor on top. Family blurry in backgorund by the shore.

Sand Beach is the only truly sandy beach in Acadia. Bring your friends, family and dance barefoot in the rain, or dip your toes in the waves. The water is COLD so you won’t likely want to stay in too long. Be sure to bring a towel to wipe up those feet.

There are many more beaches in Acadia to explore.

6. Hike The Jordan Pond Loop

Wooden boardwalk along Jordan Pond Trail on a rainy day in Acadia.

The Jordan Pond Trail loop is an easy choice for inclement weather, and along the Park Loop Road. This Easy 3.4 mile roundtrip hike , is perfect for families, on flat well groomed trail and raised wooden boardwalk along the wetlands.

Plus you can warm up at the Jordan Pond House Cafe afterwards with a coffee, chowder and their infamous popovers. Make reservations as it does get busy.

7. Take a Boat Ride

Schooner in Acadia National Park

Rainy days are the perfect time to hop aboard a sailing vessel, and ride the stormy seas. Ok, maybe not too stormy.

For the kids, Ed’s Dive In Theatre is always a blast. Board the “Starfish Enterprise,” and head out on the water to a special diving spot.

Grab a guided boat tour aboard Lulu’s Lobster Boat , and learn about local history, folklore, and the lobster industry, all while keeping an eye out for seals, and whales. Yes even lobsters.

Nearby Camden Harbor is considered one of the most beautiful harbors in New England. Their Windjammer Classic Day Sail and Windjammer Classic Sunset Sails are super popular. It’s about an hour and forty five minute drive from Bar Harbour, ME, but well worth it.

8. Wander the Wild Gardens of Acadia

Path though Wild Gardens of Acadia.

Explore the wilds of Acadia….gardens that is. See if you can spot some of the over 400 native plant species in the thirteen beautiful sections designed to represent natural plant communities found within Acadia National Park; mountains, heath, seaside, coniferous forest and more.

Entrance to the Wild Gardens of Acadia is free with your park pass. New England at its finest.

9. Take Gorgeous Photos of Bass Harbor Lighthouse

Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, on rocky shore of Acadia National Park, Maine. Rainy Day activities in Acadia.

When you think of Acadia National Park, the iconic Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse is likely to come to mind. Perched on the edge of the rocky shore, against the backdrop of ocean lit skies. Wonderful place to wander the shoreline path and take photos.

The path to the right takes you up close to the lighthouse.

For the best photos, take trail to the left of the lighthouse. Enjoy a quick walk through the woods and then to a cliff side where you’ll get a great view of the lighthouse and some gorgeous photos. Just watch your step and be careful on the rocky edge.

10. Explore Bar Harbor & Pop Into Shops

Dowtown Bar Harbor, ME rainy day

Bar Harbor is a quaint New England sea side town with a vibrant small downtown, and many fantastic places to stay.

Here you will find everything from weekly Farmer’s Markets, to art galleries, delicious restaurants and the perennial kid favorite Ben and Bill’s Chocolate Emporium . They offer 70+ flavours of ice cream and gelato, homemade fudge, chocolates and candy. Try the lobster ice cream, if you dare!

Grab a coffee & a treat at Choco-latte or at Coffee Matter.

Then wander the lovely Shore Path along Frenchman Bay, winding its way along the shoreline, harbors full of sailboats, and sunrise in early morning. Bring an umbrella and a rain jacket.

There are so many great oceanfront hotels in Maine to stay at, not only in Bar Harbor.

Best Acadia Hikes in the Rain

A list of Acadia rainy day activities wouldn’t be complete without shouting out some safe and fun options for hiking in the rain.

You’ll likely want to stick with the relatively flat trails, as many of the more challenging and mountainous trails like the Beehive Trail and Precipice Trail include stretches of going up, or down over bare granite rock, ladders and steep drop offs. This can become quite slippery & treacherous in the rain.

The following are our top 7 favorite rainy day hikes, Acadia style.

11. Hike the Jesup Path & Hemlock Loop

Jesup Trail In Acadia National Park boardwalk

Jesup Path & Hemlock Loop – One local all-season favorite is the Jesup Path, Hemlock Road (Hemlock Loop) & Wild Garden figure 8 route that runs from Loop Road through the edge of Great Meadow, past Sieur de Monts, and out to The Tarn and back. Many enjoy just the easy (1.7-mile loop trail) itself.

12. Hike Lower Haddock Pond Loop

Lower Hadlock Pond Loop – Family friendly 1.7 mile loop near Northeast Harbor. Pretty views, that follow the banks of the pond. Perfect for young kids.

13. Walk the Ocean Path

Monument cove on the Ocean Path Acadia

The Ocean Path is a family favourite of the Acadia rainy day hikes, that follows the ocean. Starting at Sand Beach it runs parallel to Park Loop Road and the ocean 0.7 miles past Thunder Hole all the way to Otter Cliff and Otter Point, (4miles or 6.4km one way).

From Sand Beach to Thunder Hole the trail is a mix of concrete and packed gravel surfaces. The rest of the trail is gravelly and rocky with uneven surfaces.

Another easy rainy day hikes in Acadia nearby are:

  • Carriage Roads – As mentioned earlier, the Carriage Road are perfect for an all weather stroll. Try the 6 mile Eagle Lake Carriage Trail or the Witch Hole Pond Carriage Trail.

14. Hike Gorham Mountain

– experience rocky coastline, and panoramic ocean views, with Cadillac Mountain in the distance on the 3.5 mile round trip moderate hike. You’ll likely want to avoid the Cadillac Cliff Trail option / section, as there’s rungs and ladders to assist hikers over rock scrambles, finishing with a steep granite stair climb. Not the easiest in the rain.

15. Hike the Family Friendly Wonderland Trail

Wonderland Trail rocky shoreline.

Wonderland – Another family friendly trail that meanders along an old gravel fire road to the coast. Only 1.4 miles round trip, with plenty of tidepools to explore on the beach. Located between Seawall Campground and the Ship Harbor Trail.

Acadia is one of the more pet friendly USA National Parks. Plus there are a few pet-friendly hotels in Bar Harbor that will welcome your furry family too

INDOOR THINGS TO DO IN ACADIA WHEN IT RAINS

16. sit back on a bus tour of bar harbor and acadia national park.

Letting someone else drive is a great way to relax and just enjoy the scenery, viewpoints and iconic Acadia sites.

A narrated bus tour of Acadia is a relaxingway to discover highlights like Cadillac Mountain, Thunder Hole (hear the ocean waves roar), Sieur De Mont’s Spring, Jordan Pond, and more. Avoid the stress of finding parking spots at the most popular spots.

✅ Book Acadia bus tour

17. Visit the Hulls Cove Visitor Center

Make the Hulls Cove Vistor Center your first stop to pick up maps, and get advice for your Acadia National Park Adventure. Certain hikes are not advisable in the rain, and there may be closures.

This main visitor station is located off of Route 3 in Bar Harbor, Maine (usually open seasonally, May to October ).

Take a look at the informative exhibits and art works from the Acadia Artist-in-Residence program on display. Check to see what ranger led activities are happening in the park while you are there.

18. Get Back To Nature at the Sieur de Monts Nature Center

Visit the Sieur de Monts Nature Center, where you will find visitor services, hiking information, and interactive exhibits. Park rangers are there from spring to fall (May through mid-October usually), if you have any questions.

Learn more about the important work of park biologists and researchers to protect park resources through family-friendly exhibits and activities. You can access many trailheads here for the hiking trails starting in the Sieur de Monts area.

If you have kidlets with you, pick up a Junior Ranger Booklet for them to fill out, and learn more about the land they are walking on.

19. Learn Some Local History at the Abbe Museum

The  Abbe Museum  and it’s satellite branch in Acadia park is the only Smithsonian-affiliated museum in Maine. Abbe features permanent and changing exhibits, as well as special events throughout the year that showcase the history and cultures of the Wabanaki.

The Sieur de Monts location in the park is temporarily closed for maintenance. Check the NPS website to see when it will reopen.

20. Drive The Schoodic Peninsula

Rocky Acadia National Park rocky and foggy coastline along the Schoodic Peninsula. On a rainy day Acadia.

The Schoodic Peninsula is the gorgeous, less crowded Acadia National Park experience located on the mainland section, east of Mt. Desert Island. This park loop road goes around the rugged coastline and can be driven in about an hour or so if you don’t stop too many times.

Popular stopping points a long the way include the very pretty Frazer Point Picnic Area and fishing dock – perfect for Acadia rainy day activities. Keep an eye out for the Winter Harbor Lighthouse in the distance, if it’s not too foggy.

Visit Schoodic Point for it’s picture perfect rocky shoreline and crashing waves, and the scenic Blueberry Hill.

The easy scenic drive to Schoodic is about 90 minutes from Bar Harbour.

LOCAL TIP: Be sure to stop at the Pickled Wrinkle on the way back, a great local spot with yummy food and good local craft beer. Fan favourites include the Frazier Point steak sandwich, burgers and the crab roll stuffed with local crab meat.

21. Eat Lobster

Traditional Lobster Pound in Trenton, Maine. Best things to do in Acadia in the rain, eat lobster.

When in Maine, eat all the lobster! You can even eat lobster for breakfast at these great Bar Harbor breakfast spots.

What better way than to visit a Lobster Pound, Open seasonally (usually May to October). It’s in my humble opinion the perfect activity for a rainy day Acadia style.

Best Places to eat lobster in and around Bar Harbour, Maine include:

  • Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound – 1237 Bar Harbor Rd., Trenton, ME (open seasonally). Eat fresh lobster while enjoying a mountain and bay view outside in good weather, or eat-in or take out on rainy days. Fan favourites include the hard shell lobster dinner, lobster rolls and
  • Thurston’s Lobster Pound  – 9 Thurston Rd, Bernard, ME (open seasonally) – Close to Bass Harbor Lighthouse. Fantastic location on the water. Try the plump and juicy steamers, fresh u-pick lobster, mussels and lobster rolls.
  • Rose Eden Lobster (former Travelin’ Lobster) – 864 State Highway 3- Road side lobster shack about 5 miles outside of town. Great for take out on rainy days or outside seatin gin better weather. Check out the fresh lobster dinner with mussels and the lobster rolls.
  • Galyn’s – 17 Main Street, Bar Harbor, ME. Check out their clam chowder, Haddock, crab cakes, and lpbster rolls. A reservation is recommended as it’s a popular restuarant.

22. Take the Ferry to Isle au Haut

Duck Harbor, Isle au Haut shoreline

Invite your family on a mini cruise, & take the Ferry to Isle au Haut. This remote island is accessible by a passenger ferry year round.

You can catch the 40 minute boat ride from the coastal town of Stonington daily during the peak season (summer). Stop off at Duck’s Landing if you plan on doing some walking on Acadia’s Trails.

Hike the Western Head Trail, a moderately difficult 1.3 mile pathe with fantastic views. You can even walk the land bridge to the islet of Western Ear at low tide.

23. Buy Gifts & Souvenirs at Shore Shop Gifts.

Shore Shop Gifts is an institution on Isle au Haut. Visit this gift shop for unique locally & Maine made goods. A hand-crafted lobster buoy key chain anyone?

A meeting place, a library, a community resource. The Jesup Memorial Library is the public library in Bar Harbor.

Check out their local history resources, or take part in one of their free book signings, concerts, slideshows or informative programs that happen throughout the year.

Criterion is a beautiful old theater in the heart of Bar Harbor that puts on movies, live performances, music, dance, theatre, other events.

Your Guide To Visiting Animal Kingdom During A Rainy Disney World Day

Disney's Animal Kingdom entrance

Rainy days at Disney World can be a bummer, but don't let it ruin your day at Animal Kingdom. Some of the best memories are made when you're dancing in the rain. An inclement weather day doesn't mean you need to miss out on all the fun and adventure that Animal Kingdom has to offer. We have experienced several rainy days at Disney World, and our experience has led us to prefer them on occasion (especially as a reprieve from the Florida heat and humidity). In addition to our own experience, we researched other Disney World blogs and websites to see what they had to say about going to a theme park in the rain.

Understanding Disney's inclement weather policy and properly preparing for a rainy day is the best way to ensure you still enjoy your vacation. We'll tell you which shows and rides are still open during the rain and which characters you can also meet when the weather isn't favorable. We'll also suggest non-ride activities, dining options, and places to shop when it rains so that not a moment of the day feels wasted.

Is Disney World Still Fun in the Rain?

Rainy day at Animal Kingdom

Rainy weather may seem like a bummer at Disney World, but there are plenty of ways to still have an enjoyable experience. Animal Kingdom, specifically, offers several indoor attractions and covered queues that can keep you dry while allowing you to explore the park. Rainy days often mean shorter wait times for popular rides which is an excellent opportunity to enjoy them without waiting in long lines.

To fully embrace a rainy day at Disney World, it's important to come prepared with rain gear such as ponchos and umbrellas. Plus, some attractions may even offer a different experience in the rain. Don't let bad weather put a damper on your trip; instead, see it as an opportunity for unique experiences and new adventures. One of our favorite ways to escape wet weather is by taking in a show, which is easy to do at Animal Kingdom. Deciding to look at the weather in a positive light can turn your day around and make it a fun memory for you and your family.

Understanding Disney's Inclement Weather Policy

Tree of Life during a rainy day

Disney's Inclement Weather Policy protects guests and Cast Members alike. While truly severe weather can close the theme parks, there are usually no closures or refunds for rainy days. To ensure a comfortable experience in rainy weather, we strongly recommend using ponchos or umbrellas, wearing water-resistant or quick-dry shoes, and bringing zip-top bags to protect items like electronics and cell phones. Ponchos are typically available for purchase in the theme parks, but you can significantly save by purchasing those before you arrive at the parks. Planning a visit to Animal Kingdom with potential inclement weather is vital and should include checking the forecast and adjusting itineraries accordingly.

Visiting on a rainy day can offer certain advantages, such as shorter wait times and fewer crowds. Plus, some of the attractions and shows may still operate during light rains, providing unique experiences that you wouldn't get on clear days. Keep in mind that some outdoor rides or attractions might close during heavy rain or thunderstorms for safety reasons. Also, remember to stay hydrated, which is easy to forget when you're soaked, and wear appropriate footwear when visiting during rainy weather to prevent slips or falls.

Preparing for a Rainy Disney Day

Guests wearing Disney Parks ponchos

When planning a trip to Disney World's Animal Kingdom, it is essential to prepare for the possibility of rain. Luckily, there are several ways to ensure that you have an amazing time even on a rainy day. As previously mentioned, packing ponchos or rain jackets to keep yourself dry while exploring the park is the simplest way to stay dry. Additionally, consider bringing waterproof bags or covers for cameras and phones to prevent them from getting damaged. Moreover, take advantage of indoor attractions like shows and exhibits during downpours, and use rainy days as an opportunity to experience popular outdoor rides with shorter lines.

Always check Disney World's  official website  for weather updates or the My Disney Experience mobile app for any updates regarding ride closures due to inclement weather. By being adequately prepared and flexible with plans, you can make the most out of your visit to Animal Kingdom regardless of the weather forecast.

Shows to See at Animal Kingdom When It's Raining

Finding Nemo show at Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom has a range of indoor shows that visitors can enjoy when outdoor plans are disrupted due to rain. The Festival of the Lion King is a popular attraction that features acrobatics and music performances in an indoor theater. Guests become part of the show by cheering for their section as warthogs, elephants, giraffes, or lions. Classic songs like "The Circle of Life" and "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" will have your toes tapping in no time.

"Finding Nemo...The Big Blue and Beyond!" is another show that employs puppetry and live actors to bring beloved movie characters to life. This show includes favorite characters like Nemo, Dory, Marlin, Crush the Turtle, and Bruce the Shark. For a unique 3D experience, "It's Tough to be a Bug!" takes guests on a journey through the world of insects. "Up! A Great Bird Adventure," is an outdoor show featuring exotic birds hosted by Russell and Dug from the film "Up." It is the only show that may be affected by weather conditions.

Thrill Rides at Animal Kingdom

Two boys riding Expedition Everest

Expedition Everest is a fast-paced ride that takes you on an exciting journey through the Himalayan mountains. With its twists and turns, this roller coaster offers a thrilling experience that is sure to get your heart racing. Alternatively, Avatar Flight of Passage provides a 3D flight simulation that will make you feel like you're soaring through the skies on the back of a Banshee from the world of Pandora. For those interested in prehistoric creatures, the Dinosaur ride takes you on a journey through a jungle filled with animatronic dinosaurs. It is mostly a dark ride, and it can be quite intense in some spots. On Kali River Rapids, guests can cool off and enjoy getting wet on this white-water rafting adventure. If you're already wet from rain, a ride on the rapids won't feel any different!

Expedition Everest and Kali River Rapids are the two rides that will be most affected by weather as the majority of each ride is outdoors. Be sure to check for any updates before planning your visit to these attractions.

Family-Friendly Rides at Animal Kingdom

Kilimanjaro Safari ride at Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom is a great place for families with kids to enjoy exciting rides and unique experiences. One of the most popular attractions is Kilimanjaro Safari, which offers an up-close view of African wildlife in their natural habitat. This attraction can still operate in light rain, but it can close for lightning, heavy rain, or winds. Another must-try ride is the Na'vi River Journey. On this slow-moving boat ride, guests can journey through a bioluminescent Pandora and marvel at its beauty.

In DinoLand USA , Dinosaur, as previously mentioned, is a bit more thrilling, but tweens and teens will appreciate its more mature ride experience. For younger family members, TriceraTop Spin is perfect because it has no height requirement and is a slower-moving ride with no hills or sudden movements. It's worth noting that TriceraTop Spin may be temporarily closed during rainy weather, so be sure to check ahead before making plans.

Which Characters Still Meet When It Rains?

Safari Mickey and Minnie

When it comes to rainy days at Animal Kingdom, some of the character meet-and-greets may be moved indoors or to covered areas that will protect characters and guests from the elements. Mickey and Minnie, dressed in safari gear, meet indoors at the Adventurers Outpost so they will not be affected by rain. However, for safety reasons, other character greetings may temporarily stop during heavy rain or winds, including characters who wave to guests from boats that ride around the Animal Kingdom waterways.

Characters who typically appear by boat include Rafiki, Pluto, Goofy, Mickey, Minnie, and Timon. If you're looking for other character interactions on a rainy day, you can still find Donald, Chip, Dale, and Goofy in Dinoland USA. While some character meeting areas may offer covered protection from the rain, others may not have that luxury. It's always a good idea to check with a Cast Member or consult an online schedule for any changes due to inclement weather.

Where to Shop at Animal Kingdom When It Rains

Island Mercantile store in Animal Kingdom

If you're looking to shop for unique souvenirs while on vacation, Mombasa Marketplace is a great option. Located in the Africa section of Disney's Animal Kingdom, this marketplace offers African-inspired merchandise that can be the perfect keepsake for your trip. If you're a fan of Pandora — The World of Avatar, Windtraders is the place to go for unique merchandise inspired by the movie. This shop is at the exit of the ride Avatar: Flight of Passage.

Over on Discovery Island, near the Tree of Life, Island Mercantile offers a wide range of plush toys and clothing. Opposite Island Mercantile, Riverside Depot offers home decor with Disney themes. Finally, Discovery Trading Company features a variety of clothing, jewelry, and toys that cater to all ages. Riverside Depot and Discovery Trading Company are connected stores within the same building.

Dining Options at Animal Kingdom When Raining

Nomad Lounge at Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom offers several dining options for visitors seeking shelter from the rain. Yak & Yeti Restaurant is an excellent choice with both indoor and outdoor seating options. It is one of our favorite places to eat. Tusker House Restaurant is another option that serves African-inspired cuisine and has indoor seating available. It also offers character meals that allow you to knock out a meal and meet characters all in one spot! Both aforementioned restaurants do require reservations, but they also accept walk-ups. For quick service options that can seat you immediately, try Pizzafari, on the way to the Africa section, or Restaurantosaurous, located in DinoLand USA.

For those interested in barbecue, Flame Tree Barbecue is quick-service and offers both indoor and covered outdoor seating. If you're looking for a unique dining experience, Satu'li Canteen has Pandora-themed food that's sure to intrigue your taste buds. It also has plenty of indoor and covered outdoor seating. If you want to take a break from dining and just want to enjoy some drinks, Nomad Lounge is the perfect spot. With views of Discovery River, it's an ideal place to relax while waiting out the rain.

Non-Ride Activities at Animal Kingdom

Children participate in Wilderness Explorers

Animal Kingdom offers a variety of activities that cater to all age groups. At the Affection Section petting zoo and Conservation Station, visitors can engage in interactive exhibits that allow them to learn about different animals and their habitats. For those who prefer to stay dry, there are walking trails like the Maharajah Jungle Trek or Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail that offer an opportunity to observe animals up close in their natural habitats.

One of the most popular activities at Animal Kingdom is Wilderness Explorers. Just like Russell from "Up," guests can earn badges by exploring different sections of the park and finding other Wilderness Explorer Leaders. This activity is ideal for families with children as it encourages them to be curious and learn about nature while having fun. With over 30 different challenges, the Wilderness Explorers program is an excellent way for kids to become Senior Wilderness Explorers themselves.

Tips for Making the Most of a Rainy Day

Western Lowland Gorilla and her baby

Animal Kingdom is a fantastic destination to visit on a rainy day as it boasts numerous indoor attractions. Visitors can take advantage of popular shows like "It's Tough to be a Bug!" and "Finding Nemo...The Big Blue and Beyond!" that are not affected by the weather. They can also explore animal exhibits such as the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail or the Maharajah Jungle Trek which have spots throughout each experience to give guests a reprieve from the rain. Furthermore, shorter wait times for outdoor rides mean that visitors can enjoy them without enduring long lines.

A change in weather can also provide a unique atmosphere and experience within the park, so don't let the rain dampen your spirits! Make sure to bring appropriate rain gear like umbrellas or ponchos so you can fully enjoy all that Animal Kingdom has to offer. Additionally, there are plenty of dining options available where you can warm up and grab a bite to eat while waiting for the rain to pass. Overall, visiting Animal Kingdom on a rainy day can be just as enjoyable as any other day, thanks to its wide range of indoor activities and attractions.

Methodology

Disney100 sculpture at Animal Kingdom

We have experienced all four of Walt Disney World's theme parks on a rainy day. Of course, preparation is key to having a great time, and that includes dressing appropriately, checking the forecast, and knowing which rides and attractions will be opened or closed during a rainstorm. In addition to our hands-on knowledge, we also consulted other theme park expert websites to see if their suggestions were similar or different enough from our experiences to warrant inclusion in our story.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Kauai Rainy Day Activities

Kauai indoor activities.

Kauai, more than any other Hawaiian island, is a place to visit for its splendid natural beauty. There’s a good chance, however, that you’re picturing that beauty as it appears under a glowing sun and clear blue sky. While that is the norm, rain is a factor to consider on the Garden Isle. This article is designed to give tips on what to do if you encounter a rainy day during your Kauai visit.

As you may notice, some weather forecasts indicate rain is an almost daily occurrence on Kauai. However, it’s important to know that Kauai rain is unlike the rain you might be accustomed to in one crucial way: it usually comes in surprisingly short bursts, and then the sun returns right after.

A "rainy day" on Kauai refers to a longer period of time during which a system blankets the island in rain. Usually, this occurs when a low trough system or a Kona storm (which comes from the west, opposite the trades) approaches or covers the island.

If you would like more specific information about weather patterns, check out our Kauai Weather page .

That said, here are our picks for some of the best rainy-day activities on Kauai for 2023.

Rainy days can lead to some of the most memorable and unique experiences of your trip.

So, even if it’s raining, you can explore and enjoy activities you might not have considered otherwise.

Here are 55 top things to do on vacation when it rains!

Indoor Places to go when it Rains on Vacation

These indoor activities are perfect for rainy days!

1. Historic Sites, Houses, or Castles

If the rain isn’t too heavy, visiting a historic site, such as a castle or fort, can be a fun adventure for children and adults alike.

Many historic sites offer indoor tours or have sheltered areas, so you can explore without getting too wet.

Visiting historic sites are a grant way to infuse a bit of education and history into your vacation in an engaging way.

2. History Museums

Rainy days are perfect for immersing yourself in culture and history.

You can spend the whole day at a large museum with multiple world-class exhibits and impressive historical artifacts.

Or spend a few hours at a local museum to learn about the city or region you’re visiting or explore niche collections.

Either way, your experience can be both educational and inspiring.

Love museums? Buy a museum pass for discounted admission to multiple museums!

3. Art Museums

No need to feel rushed when visiting an art museum on a rainy day. Take your time appreciating stunning artwork while you wait out the storm.

You might find modern art installations, exhibitions of classic paintings, or curated collections dedicated to particular artist.

Art museums are ideal for adults or teens with an appreciation for art. Many art museums also have activity rooms with art activities inspired by their collections.

Many art museums have excellent cafes, where you can get lunch, coffee, or a cocktail without having to brave the weather.

4. Interactive Children’s Museums

Many cities boast interactive children’s museums designed for toddlers, elementary aged children, and tweens.

Expect interactive exhibits on topics like technology and culture, and play areas that look like small stores, farms, or veterinary offices.

Children’s museums are so much fun for kids! They’re the perfect place for kids to burn some energy when it’s too wet to play outside.

5. Science Centers

Science museums often feature hands-on exhibits about technology, space, natural history, and more, designed to engage children in learning about science, technology, engineering, and math in a fun and accessible way.

Exhibits are created to appeal to kids of all ages, so science museums are a great family destination.

6. Aquariums

If you’re looking for a more immersive indoor experience, visit an aquarium.

Escape the stormy weather and venture into the world of tropical fish, jellyfish, stingrays, and more.

Many aquariums also offer interactive zones where kids can touch and learn about sea creatures under supervision.

There might be water all around you, but you’ll be comfortably dry.

7. Indoor Botanical Gardens

Head to an indoor botanical garden. Enjoy exotic plants, botanical exhibits, and garden-themed gift shops.

Walking among exotic plants and beautifully arranged gardens can be a peaceful retreat from the rain and a chance to learn about different species of plants and flowers.

Botanical gardens are a nice way to be in nature without being completely exposed to the elements. They also often have excellent gift shops!

Live band on stage, many people in the foreground.

8. Live Music

Explore a new city by venturing out to a venue with live music.

You won’t even notice that it’s raining when you’re enjoying live entertainment. Bonus points if you find spot with arcade games and great drinks!

9. Theater Performances

Watching a play or performance at a local theater can be a splendid way to spend a rainy afternoon or evening.

Large cities like New York or Chicago boast vibrant theater scenes, offering everything from musicals and plays to comedy shows and experimental theater.

Even small vacation spots have theaters that showcase local talent or bring in traveling Broadway-style productions.

Children’s Theatre Performances

If you’re traveling with kids, find out if there’s a children’s theater performance happening during your vacation.

Children’s theatre performances are tailored to young audiences, with engaging stories, vibrant costumes, and interactive elements that can captivate children’s attention and spark their imagination.

See a matinee performance if the rain is supposed to clear up by evening.

10. Art Galleries

Looking for an incredible souvenir? Explore a local art gallery.

You can expect to find curated collections by selected artists, all for sale. You may find art galleries that focus on paintings, ceramics, drawings, or mixed media.

If the original artwork is a bit out of your price range, look for etchings or prints by an artist you like, and have the work framed when you get home. (Prints are one of my personal favorite souvenirs!)

11. Lectures & Talks

Look for local lectures related to a specific interest or hobby you (or your traveling companion) would love to learn more about.

See if a local bookstore is hosting a book reading by a local author, or a local university is hosting a lecture on the area’s history or ecological efforts.

Showing up for a local talk is an interesting way to engage your mind, meet like-minded individuals, and gain new insights into the area where you’re traveling.

12. See a Movie

A movie theater can be a great place to spend a rainy day or evening.

Check out a local cinema showcasing independent films you can’t watch at home, or take in a blockbuster on the big screen.

13. Arts and Crafts Workshops

Do something artistic!

Look for local craft stores or studios that offer workshops designed for adults or children.

You could find classes for pottery painting, photography,  painting,  bead making, scrapbooking, or even simple woodworking projects.

Arts and crafts classes are a creative way to spend a few hours, and you’ll have a handmade souvenir to take home.

Display case featuring various pastries, London.

Food-related Activities When it Rains on Vacation

A rainy day can be the perfect excuse to enjoy your destination’s culinary specialties!

14. Explore the Local Culinary Scene

Rainy days present the perfect excuse to dive into the local culinary scene. Spend your day cafe-hopping, enjoying a delicious brunch, long lunch, afternoon tea, or a multi-course dinner.

Decide which bakery has the best donuts or cookies. Because sampling the local specialties is always a good idea!

15. Indulge in a Culinary Tour

To get the inside scoop on the best restaurants and local specialties, take a food tour of your destination.

If the weather permits light outdoor activity, consider embarking on a guided culinary tour.

These tours typically involve short walks to various eateries, cafes, and sometimes even food markets, so you can taste a variety of local specialties.

16. Take a Cooking Class

Participating in a cooking class is a fantastic way to dive into the local cuisine. Many cities have cooking workshops where you can learn to make local dishes.

Cooking classes are a fun way to  learn something new, enjoy delicious food, and maybe even make new friends.

Depending on where you are, you can master the art of Italian pasta or the delicate balance of flavors in Thai cuisine. A cooking class can be a delicious way to spend a rainy day.

17. Do a Wine Tasting

Book a wine tasting in your destination.

This might be an urban wine tasting experience, where your guide takes you to a few nearby wine cellars for tastings.

Or you can take a whole day tour with transportation provided, so you don’t have to worry about driving under the influence, or on unfamiliar roads in the rain.

Sure, your scenic stops might be a bit overcast, but that’s just another reason to raise a toast to sunnier days ahead!

Display of Gelato, various flavors.

18. Go for Ice Cream

Think ice cream is only for sunny days? Think again!

Brave the rain showers and take a short road trip to find a local ice cream shop and try the flavor of the month.

19. Cooking & Baking Together

If you’re staying in a home exchange or renting a vacation home, you’ll have access to a kitchen, so use the rainy day to cook or bake with your kids.

Cooking on a rainy day

Many children enjoy the process of making food, especially when it involves making food they enjoy eating.

Cooking together is a fun way to teach kids basic cooking skills and get dinner made!

Buy ready-made crust and sauce, cheese, and toppings, and declare a pizza challenge night where everyone gets to make their own pizza, with prizes awarded for silly categories.

Baking on a rainy day

Baking is even more fun to do with kids and teens. Choose simple recipes like cookies or cupcakes.

Kids can learn about measurements, following instructions, and the joy of creating (and eating) something themselves.

If you’re not traveling with children, bake for yourself!

Stop at a local grocery store to buy ingredients to make cookies from scratch, start with a box mix, or grab refrigerated premade cookie dough.

Add decorative toppings and icing, and let your kids decorate the cookies with as much sugar as they like!

20. Cooking Competition

If there’s more than one aspiring cook in your group, challenge them to a cooking competition.

Inspired by cooking show competitions, your family or friends can create a meal or dessert with a set of ingredients you provide.

This can be done individually or in teams, and you can be the judge or enlist the help of others.

With enough people, you can end up with a multi-course meal–definitely a win-win situation!

Outdoor Activities for Rainy Vacation Days

These outside activities for rainy days are perfect if you’d rather be outside exploring!

Assuming there’s no thunder and lightning, grab some rain gear and head outside! Didn’t pack rain gear? Buy some cheap rain gear at a tourist shop—including a cute souvenir umbrella!

21. Hiking in the rain

As long as the weather isn’t too bad, embrace the rain by venturing into a nearby rainforest or national park for a hike.

Light rain can add a magical element to a hike in the forest, enhancing the lushness of the vegetation, the sound of the streams, and the overall ambiance.
