La Romana is a regularly visited cruise port of call in the Caribbean itineraries during the Fall-Winter season, with as many as 395,000 passengers and close to 140 cruise ship visits in the 2018-2019 season.

The cruise port of La Romana has a very appealing character: the area is neat and immaculately kept. On the whole, La Romana is safe. Locals tend to be very friendly but not pushy and speak English reasonably well.

For those cruising with families, there is a lot to do. Cruise passengers with walking difficulties will find it easy to wander around on their own in the La Romana cruise terminal.

Where is La Romana and the cruise terminal

La Romana (a small port city with a population of around 130,400) is in the eponymous southern province of the Dominican Republic. The port city is on the southeast coast of the island, bathed by the Caribbean Sea. The cruise port in La Romana is around 200 miles (340 km) west of San Juan and 421 miles (678 km) north of Aruba .

Thanks to its location, La Romana is a regular port of call in itineraries sailing east and west Caribbean cruises. Cruises to La Romana usually call at popular ports such as Amber Cove , Curaçao , Bonaire , and Grand Turk . Cruise lines like Regent and NCL also call at top ports in the Eastern Caribbean like Antigua , Barbados , St. Lucia , and St. Maarten . Royal Caribbean cruise ships usually include a call at Labadee in their itineraries.

Homeport, embarking and disembarking in La Romana

La Romana is also a turnaround port (or homeport) for many years. The cruise terminal in La Romana is reasonably close to two international airports (La Romana International Airport and Punta Cana Airport), both with excellent worldwide connections. German cruise lines AIDA and TUI use the port to embark and disembark passengers for a few years, and so does Marella (British). Although Carnival Cruise ships regularly visit La Romana, they never used the port as a homeport.

Where cruise ships dock

Cruise ships dock on the mouth of Rio Dulce (known in English as La Romana River). Two large cruise ships can berth simultaneously on two quays (one on each riverbank). The eastern quay has a pier for cruise ships up to 1148 ft (350 m) long, while cruise ships up to 820 ft (250 m) long can dock the western quay.

Where is La Romana Cruise Port?

La Romana Cruise Terminal Secondary View

La Romana Cruise Port is located in the southeastern region of the Dominican Republic. The town of La Romana is 76 miles (129 km) from the nation’s capital, Santo Domingo, although the capital city itself is too far to visit comfortably on a cruise day. The cruise terminal is at the mouth of the Rio Dulce and can accommodate two large cruise ships.

The cruise port is conveniently located near the center of La Romana and the historic Altos de Chavon village. Many cruise lines operate Caribbean cruises departing from La Romana. In this case, most flights for cruises arrive at Punta Cana International Airport, 50 minutes east of the port city.

Several major attractions and amenities are close to La Romana, making arranging shore excursions or independent tours easy. You can easily travel to beautiful beaches, luxury resorts, and historic sites. Popular destinations such as Altos de Chavón, Casa de Campo, Catalina Island, and Saona Island are near the cruise port.

La Romana Cruise Terminal

La Romana Cruise Terminal

La Romana Cruise Terminal—also called Sugar Breeze Terminal—is close to the downtown area. The port is not a tender port, and your cruise ship docks at the pier. Up to two large cruise ships can be in port simultaneously. The ships dock on each side of the Rio Dulce.

The main cruise terminal is on the east side of the river. This modern port area has plenty of facilities for cruise passengers, like a swimming pool and bar. The pier on the west side has no facilities and is only used when a cruise ship is docked at the other pier.

Royal Caribbean, Regent, Carnival Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line are among the cruise lines using the port on western and eastern Caribbean cruises .

La Romana Cruise Terminal is also a turnaround port, or homeport, where many cruises start or end. It’s conveniently close to two international airports—La Romana International Airport and Punta Cana Airport, both of which offer excellent connections worldwide. La Romana Airport is just about 5 miles (approximately 8 kilometers) northeast of the cruise terminal and provides daily direct flights to Miami among other major cities. When you arrive, you can hop on a shuttle bus that will take you straight to the terminal.

Occasionally, a cruise ship may anchor at the Catalina Island Cruise Terminal, which is a tender port. Tender boats are used to transport passengers ashore to Isla Catalina, offering a seamless connection to explore the island’s pristine beaches and snorkeling opportunities.

Arriving on a Cruise in La Romana

La Romana Port Beach Cruise

As you arrive on a cruise in La Romana, Dominican Republic, you’ll be welcomed with stunning views of the city and lush greenery. The port is modern and equipped to comfortably accommodate large cruise ships. It features shops, restaurants, and various transportation options readily available.

Facilities at La Romana Cruise Port

La Romana Cruise Port has limited facilities for cruise passengers without leaving the terminal area. Here are a few facilities that are free to use when docking at the port:

  • Swimming pool with swim-up bar: The swimming pool is one of the best features of the cruise port. The area, encircled by many sun loungers, provides free access to the pool and chairs. This is a great place to relax and unwind before returning to the ship.
  • Market Square: The market has the usual array of duty-free shops selling chocolate, cigars, and rum. You’ll also find a sizable market with stalls selling jewelry, paintings, and brightly colored painted parrots. You can also enjoy a coffee or drink at one of the cafes or bars in the terminal area.

No beaches are within walking distance of the cruise terminal, so the swimming pool is an excellent addition to the port’s facilities. If you want to spend a day at the beach near the terminal, you should inquire if your cruise line organizes a free shuttle to the nearby Casa de Campo Resort.

Using Terminal Facilities Before Your Cruise Departs from La Romana

If you’re starting your Caribbean cruise from La Romana and you arrive by air into the Dominican Republic, you might wonder whether you can enjoy the port facilities before boarding the ship. Once you’ve passed through the outdoor check-in area at the cruise terminal’s entrance, you’re welcome to use all the amenities available. This includes access to the swimming pool, bars, restaurants, and other facilities where you can relax and unwind as you await your cruise departure.

Discovering La Romana

La Romana Promenade

There are several possibilities if you want to stay close to La Romana on your cruise day. You can visit the recreated Mediterranean village at Altos de Chavon, relax at the Casa de Campo Resort, or spend a day on the beautiful Isla Catalina.

La Romana is a popular cruise destination because of the attractions on the island’s southeastern side. Some cruise day options include kayaking, catamaran excursions, exploring caves, swimming with dolphins, or snorkeling in crystal-clear Caribbean waters. You could also plan a tour of the famous town of San Pedro.

Many cruise passengers wonder about visiting the stunning city of Santo Domingo . Unfortunately, the capital of the Dominican Republic is too far away to see on a cruise day. It is 76 miles (129 km) from the cruise terminal, and the round trip lasts over three hours.

Transportation from La Romana Cruise Port

Taxis are the most convenient way to get to tourist destinations from the La Romana Cruise Port. However, shuttle buses are waiting to pick you up if you have booked a shore excursion online or with your cruise line. Also, stop by the information desk at the cruise terminal exit to check the latest taxi fares and get a map.

Driving a Taxi

You’ll find a taxi rank just inside the terminal gate, where licensed taxis wait to pick up cruise passengers. Taxis aren’t metered, and there are set fares per person to specific destinations. It’s always worth haggling to get a lower price, and it’s best practice to agree on the fare before traveling.

Outside the terminal area, you’ll find plenty of private taxi drivers offering their services. You can often negotiate cheaper fares, especially if you leave the ship later in the day.

Uber Phone

Uber operates throughout the Dominican Republic and is a great way to travel from La Romana. The benefit of using Uber is that it’s often cheaper than local taxis. Also, you know the fare beforehand and usually have fewer issues with the language barrier.

Dominican Republic Bus

Local buses are the cheapest way to get from La Romana Cruise Pier to popular tourist destinations. For example, it only costs $1.50 to get to the popular public beach at Bayahibe. However, navigating local bus services and timetables can be tricky and not advisable on a cruise day.

Shuttle transfers

Shuttle transfers are the best way to travel from Punta Cana or La Romana airports to the cruise terminal. From Punta Cana, the shuttle bus takes around one hour and 35 minutes. You can also pre-book a shuttle bus to take you to and from the port to your destination.

A day pass to an exclusive resort on the beach is usually all-inclusive, so you can access a range of facilities, including unlimited Caribbean food and local drinks.

Spend a Day at the Hilton La Romana All-Inclusive Resort

Located 25 minutes from the cruise pier in La Romana at Bayahibe, the Hilton Resort is an all-inclusive beach resort. A day pass gives you access to beach chairs, swimming pools, towels, and a private beach. The resort also features an excellent restaurant serving local and international cuisine, and there’s a barbecue area on the beach.

Casa de Campo Luxury Beach Resort

The Beach in Casa De Campo

Enjoy the ultimate luxury by staying at the Casa de Campo Resort in La Romana. The resort is only 5 minutes from the cruise port. This premier destination for cruise passengers offers three private white sand beaches, a spa, an equestrian center, tennis courts, and swimming pools.

One of the highlights of Casa de Campo is its stunning Minitas Beach. Here, you can relax in the sun with palm trees swaying in the background while enjoying Caribbean views.

Casa de Campo offers various day pass packages, depending on how you want to spend your day. Prices range from $99 to $199 for the day. Here are some of the activities on offer:

  • One-hour horseback riding with an instructor
  • Infinity pool
  • Poolside lounge chairs and cabanas
  • Beach pergolas
  • Private tennis lessons
  • Shooting course with 25 rounds of clay pigeons
  • Play a round of golf at one of the three golf courses

Closest Beaches to La Romana Cruise Port

No beaches are within walking distance of the cruise pier in La Romana. Obviously, if you want to spend the day at the beach and have limited time in port, you don’t want to be traveling for hours to a beach. You want plenty of time to relax and soak up the Caribbean sunshine. The good news is that plenty of beaches are a short taxi ride from the port.

Here are my reviews of the best nearby beaches in La Romana.

Bayahibe Beach

Bayahibe

The most popular public beach for cruise passengers is Bayahibe Beach, 25 minutes from the port of La Romana. This pristine beach is a stunning stretch of white sand shoreline with plenty of beach bars. The water is clean, calm and stays shallow for a long way out, making Bayahibe Beach safe for kids and swimming.

A coconut grove protects the beautiful beach at Bayahibe, and the swaying palm trees give it a distinctly tropical feel. Also, the village is just over a mile from the beach, making eating lunch or grabbing a cocktail convenient.

Bayahibe Beach is also the best place to book boat excursions for snorkeling, visiting Isla Saona, or catamaran excursions.

However, it’s important to note that Bayahibe Beach can become crowded on cruise days due to its popularity. Also, the facilities are not as well-kept as some of the other nearby beaches.

Playa Caleta

Playa de La Caleta

If you want to enjoy a beach break on a budget during your cruise day, take a taxi to Playa Caleta, 15 minutes west of La Romana. The beautiful beach is a favorite with locals and is easy to get to from the cruise terminal. The beach and the water can be rocky, so you’ll need water shoes to enjoy your day.

The beach has a distinctly natural feel to it. However, it’s not as well maintained as some of the more popular “touristy” beaches. You’ll find that the waters are calm and suitable for snorkeling. There are also several vendors selling fried flatbreads and seafood treats.

Playa Dominicus

Playa Dominicus is a stunning public beach, 30 minutes from the La Romana cruise port. This pristine stretch of white sand and crystal-clear turquoise water is one of the cleanest beaches in the area. You can relax on the fine sand, enjoy the cool sea breezes, and swim in the clear blue waters.

Compared to Bayahibe Beach, Playa Dominicus receives better ratings from cruise ship passengers. You’ll enjoy the great vibe on the beach, with plenty of beach bars, great restaurants, and live music. The water can sometimes be rough, so take care when swimming if you have children.

Top fact: Playa Dominicus was the first Caribbean beach to receive a Blue Flag, a prestigious international award recognizing clean, safe, and environmentally responsible beach areas.

Bavaro Beach in Punta Cana

Bavaro Beach is one of the longest beaches in the Caribbean. Located at Punta Cana, the public beach has stunning white sand, clear turquoise water, and coral reefs close to the shoreline. Even though parts of the beach can get crowded, it’s so long that you can always find a quiet spot.

Relaxing at Bavaro Beach is ideal if you’re planning a shore excursion on the east side of the Dominican Republic. Travel time from the cruise terminal is around 1 hour and 10 minutes. Visiting this beach is best suited for longer shore excursions due to the travel time required.

Activities at Bavaro Beach include:

  • Parasailing
  • Speedboat rides
  • Catamaran cruises
  • Snorkeling in coral reefs
  • Scuba diving

La Romana Cruise Port: FAQs

La Romana Beach

When is the best time to visit La Romana on a cruise?

The best time to visit La Romana on a cruise is during the dry season, from mid-November through mid-April, which coincides with the winter months in the Northern Hemisphere. This period features day-long sunshine accompanied by cool breezes, making it ideal for shore excursions and beach breaks. However, since it’s peak tourist season in the Dominican Republic, you can expect more crowded beaches and busier tourist sites.

You can usually book cheaper cruises from June through November. But the weather is unsettled, wet, and windy during this time. It’s usually best to avoid Caribbean cruises during the hurricane season.

What currency is used in La Romana, Dominican Republic?

The official currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso (DOP), usually written with the symbol RD$ or just $. However, US dollars are widely accepted, especially in tourist and port areas. At smaller, private establishments on public beaches, vendors might only accept pesos. So, it’s a good idea to carry local currency if you plan to visit quieter locations.

Is it safe to explore La Romana on my own?

La Romana Chairs

Walking around La Romana is generally safe for tourists. Like any tourist spot, it’s wise to always be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded or unfamiliar areas. So, stick to well-traveled routes and popular tourist destinations. If you feel unsure about safety, booking a shore excursion with your cruise line or online is advisable.

Is tap water safe to drink in La Romana?

Don’t drink tap water when in the Dominican Republic. Stick to bottled water, especially if you have a sensitive stomach. Ensure you have enough to last the day and stay hydrated, particularly in the hot and humid climate.

Will I be able to communicate in English in La Romana?

In the Dominican Republic, the locals are friendly and helpful, making communication easy. English is commonly spoken in most tourist destinations and big cities, but locals in rural areas may be less fluent. Learning basic Spanish phrases before your Caribbean cruise is a good idea.

Is tipping expected in the Dominican Republic?

Tipping is common in the Dominican Republic, including at restaurants, hotels, and tourist attractions. Most restaurants add a 10% gratuity; leaving a tip is optional. Tipping taxi drivers and tour guides 10% is also standard practice.

La Romana Cruise Port: Tips, Attractions and Beaches

The La Romana cruise port is in Dominican Republic’s third largest city. It is one of the few active cruise ports in the country.

It is mostly used by Carnival cruise ships and related brands such as Princess and Holland America because the company built the port. But this popularity is rather limited because La Romana is a small port.

Carnival makes a small number of stops there throughout the year. They are typically eight-day southern Caribbean cruises that embark from Florida and that also visit Grand Turk, Aruba and Curaçao. Some eastern Caribbean cruises go there as well.

Cruise visitors may find that the main attraction in La Romana is the resort village of Casa de Campo, a 7,000-acre complex that features golf, tennis, skeet shooting, equestrian, beaches and more. It is accessible from cruise ships via taxis and excursion buses.

Like other major destinations in Dominican Republic such as Punta Cana and Puerto Plata, La Romana is a destination that emphasizes plenty of activities in confined areas.

Where is La Romana?

La romana cruise port map.

La Romana is on the southeastern coast of Dominican Republic. It is 80 miles east of Santo Domingo and 48 miles west of Punta Cana. Its location within a 50-minute drive of Punta Cana offers some opportunities for shore excursions to attractions in that famous resort destination including dolphin encounters.

Quick Travel Tips

Attractions and shore excursions.

Like most private ports in the Caribbean, La Romana offers shopping and restaurants owned by the cruise line. Visitors who want to do more than shop will find other things to do elsewhere.

The region’s most popular cultural attraction is Altos de Chavón, a 15th century artists’ village next to Casa de Campo. It has hosted performers such as Frank Sinatra, Santana, Sting, Plácido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli, Heart and Air Supply, according to the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism.

The village was designed by former Paramount movies set designer Roberto Copa. He also created movie sets for famous Italian film director Federico Fellini.

Some excursions to Altos de Chavón also go to Cuevas de las Maravillas (caves of wonders). Visitors go by footpath 25 feet underground to view stalactites and stalagmites. Another highlight is a collection of about 500 paintings by inhabitants on the island when Columbus first arrived.

The four-hour tour has prices starting at $70 per person plus discounts for children. Some tours are less expensive if they don’t include the cave.

For anyone willing to take the time, Carnival offers a one-hour ride to Punta Cana for the Dolphin Island Park and dolphin encounters. Prices vary based on the program, but they usually start at about $150 per person, which is typical for most dolphin encounter parks in the Caribbean.

Snorkelers and divers will want to visit the Guadalupe underwater museum, which can also be seen by snorkeling above it.

Another popular spot is the living museum of the Cara Merchant shipwreck, which once belonged to the famous Captain Kidd who was sentenced to death after being accused of being a pirate.

A marine coral reef nature preserve surrounds the six-square-mile Isla Catalina, which attracts thousands of divers and snorkelers each year.

Another one-hour excursion drive will go to Hoyo Azul Cave. This natural pool with crystal clear blue water is at the base of a giant cliff. The excursion also includes educational trails and animal encounters.

For golfers, Teeth of the Dog designed by Pete Dye has been called the top golf course in the Caribbean and among the top 100 in the world ranked by Golf Magazine. It is located at the Casa de Campo resort. The resort also has art galleries that display painters and sculptures from around the Dominican Republic.

Three other nearby Dye-designed courses are Dye Fore, The Links, and La Romana Country Club. Another option is La Estancia, designed by his son, P. B. Dye.

Beaches Near the Port

A Catalina Island beach break for five hours has a starting cost of $95 per person with discounts for children. This beach break is more expensive than most because of a 35 minute road ride.

Saona Island is accessible by boat from Bayahibe and is popular for its beaches and excursions on catamarans and speedboats. Lucky tourists will be joined by dolphins that swim and leap nearby. Like Catalina Island, this excursion cost about $95 per person but includes an open bar. Again like Catalina, visitors take a bus ride followed by a boat ride.

Visitors may have better luck and spend less money by going to a beach on their own. Several beaches are near the cruise docks and accessible by shuttle or taxi depending on the location. They include Casa de Campo and a 10-minute taxi ride to Bayahibe Beach.

Two of the best beach options for anyone taking a taxi are Playa El Caleton and Playa Bayahibe. El Caleton is close and decent. Bayahibe is farther and better.

Playa El Caleton is just less than two miles from the cruise terminal and a better choice for anyone who wants a quick visit. Bayahibe is a 25-minute drive and has more to offer. It’s also often available as a cruise excursion.

Two smaller options are Playa Caleta at five miles and Playa El Minitas at four miles from the terminal.

Shopping and Dining

Altos de Chavón has a small number of shops and restaurants. Another shopping and dining option is The Marina, a village within Casa de Campo.

Transportation / Getting Around

La Romana transportation options are simple and clear thanks to its small size: taxis, shuttles and excursion buses.

Passengers will find taxis and shuttles at the docks to take visitors to Casa de Campo, the Marina and Altos de Chavon. Taxi rates are often negotiable, so ask for a price before getting into the cab.

In our experience, negotiating taxi rates in a cruise port is a risky business, especially at the end of the day when the ship is almost ready to leave. We recommend taking an excursion bus whenever possible.

La Romana and other locations in the Dominican Republic are blessed with warmer weather than average temperatures in the Caribbean throughout the year.

Daily highs average in the mid to upper 80s Fahrenheit and break 90 degrees from June through September. Rainfall is lowest during this time as well.

The worst time to visit is November and December when average rainfall reaches nine inches a month. La Romana also has a brief rainy season in May.

In this article, you will discover all the amazing adventures you can embark on from the major cruise ports in the Dominican Republic. There are about four bigger Dominican Republic Cruise Ports, so it can be a bit confusing to plan your activities.

Technically, the article really covers five different ports. In northern Puerto Plata, there are two different ports. But they are so close together that you will have access to the same tours and adventures from either one. As the Dominican Republic is not a very big island, distances are nothing to worry too much about. Sadly, you will still not have the time to see everything in one day.

It is important to know which port you are docking on, before planning your shore excursions.

To make the planning a bit easier for you, I have created a neat overview of the Dominican Republic Cruise Ports – and a guide on how to plan the shore excursions!

Check out my Dominican Republic Cruise Port Map for a great overview below!

Here are the major cruise ports in the Dominican Republic:

  • Cruise Port Santo Domingo
  • Amber Cove Cruise Port and Taino Bay Port in Puerto Plata
  • Port Of Samana Peninsula
  • La Romana Cruise Terminal on the southeast coast

Overview Dominican Republic Cruise Ports

Before going deeper into the shore excursions for each port separately, I wanted to give you a quick overview of the most important touristic areas on the island.

Among the most popular destinations for travelers visiting the Dominican Republic is the capital Santo Domingo. It is at the top of the list for city lovers for sure.

The most prominent feature of Santo Domingo is its old Zona Colonial city . There you find remnants of the Spanish colonial rule everywhere!

As it is both the country’s capital and largest city, Santo Domingo offers a perfect blend of rich colonial history, vibrant culture, and modern buildings.

Secondly, La Romana Town Cruise Terminal is situated along the south-eastern shores of the DR. It is close to famous resort towns Punta Cana and Cap Cana. Stunning destinations like Bayahibe and the tropical island Isla Saona are also close by.

Thirdly, you have the Port of Samana. It is on the peninsula right north of Santo Domingo. This spot is famous for whale watching and seeing some natural wonders.

And lastly, the northwestern shores of the Dominican Republic have unique sights to offer, whether you arrive at either of the cruise terminals around Puerto Plata town. The Puerto Plata area has many activities, tours, and adventures to offer, and we will look into the most popular ones.

In the next section, we’ll start by guiding you through the best excursions things to do from each one of the Dominican Republic cruise ports.

beautiful beach in the dominican republic with white sand and blue ocean

Santo Domingo Cruise Port(s)

Santo Domingo Cruise Port is located in the capital city of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo. Cruise ships either dock at the Sans Souci Zone or at the Don Diego Quay.

Don Diego Quay is close to the city center, you can simply walk there. If your ship docks at Sans Souci, you have to take a taxi or other transportation to the city. Most ships dock at Sans Souci.

Both of the Santo Domingo Cruise Ports offer modern facilities. They can accommodate cruise ships of different sizes. They have docking facilities, terminals, and amenities to handle the arrival and departure of cruise passengers efficiently.

There’s no shortage of things to do at the Santo Domingo Cruise Port.

There are plenty of excursions to choose from in Santo Domingo as well if you want a done-for-you tour that gets you the city’s highlights in a short amount of time.

Here are some of my favorite pre-planned shore excursions from the Santo Domingo Cruise Port:

  • Full-Day Cruise of Cayo Levantado (Bacardi Island)
  • National Park of the East Private Hiking Tour with Swimming
  • Historical Tour of Santo Domingo and 3 eyes Caves with Lunch

beautiful cafe located right on the caribbean sea overlooking the ocean

Obviously, you can also explore the city by yourself. Here are some of the highlights you should not miss in Santo Domingo:

Make sure you visit the impressive Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria La Menor in the Zona Colonial . It is also called Catedral Primada, as it was the first cathedral built in the New World.

Check out the storytelling Museo de la Resistencia, followed by a lunch at one of the restaurants along the charming boardwalk called Malecon. You will have some stunning sea views.

While in the heart of the historic district, stroll down Calle de Las Damas . It is the oldest street in the Americas.

Also make sure to visit the Alcazar de Colon, a palace built by no other than Christopher Columbus’s son.

Around the Parque Colon, you find lots of little cafes and bars and you can stroll along the charming main street in Zona Colonial, El Conde.

Alternatively, you can head over to Los Tres Ojos (The Three Eyes). It is an ancient underground cave system with three freshwater ponds with the most transparent water you have ever seen. These partly open cave conglomerates with intricate stairwells to the bottom are simply stunning!

Of course, no visit to Santo Domingo is complete without indulging in its culinary scene.

For authentic Dominican cuisine, head to El Conuco or Adrian Tropical, both of which offer a variety of traditional dishes. Try some sancocho (meat stew), mofongo (mashed plantain), and tostones (fried plantain).

If you want something more upscale, try the seafood at Pez Dorado (golden fish) or the lamb at Pat’e Palo.

And for a sweet treat, stop by Helados Bon. It is a local ice cream shop with ravishing flavors like guanabana and passion fruit.

cute cafe entrance with tables in Santo Domingo

Amber Cove And Taino Bay

Both of these cruise ports are situated on the northern coastline of the Dominican Republic. Amber Cove Cruise Port and the brand-new Taino Bay Cruise Port are popular destinations for many cruise lines.

The original port for cruise liners in Puerto Plata was Amber Cove. It was located just outside the city. The port got its name from the northern coastline, called the Amber Coast. It is called that due to its rich deposits of golden-yellow amber.

The Taino Bay Cruise Port opened in 2021 in the heart of Puerto Plata. It is a super modern port within walking distance of several sights in the Puerto Plata Old City.

Taino is the name for the indigenous people of the Dominican Republic. As the locals here are serious about taking care of their legacy, you can explore the remnants of Taino culture in several places.

If you don’t feel like exploring too much on this stop, I still have some great options for you. You are in for a treat if your cruiser docks at Taino Bay. This modern port has many amenities staged right outside your ship. They have a large leisure area with a pool, swim-up bar, loungers, restaurants, and shopping opportunities!

beautiful fortress with canons overlooking caribbean cruise port in the dominican republic with a big cruise ship in port

If you are looking for some pre-organized shore excursions, look no further.

Here are my top picks for shore excursions for these two Dominican Republic Cruise Ports:

  • Amber Cove Shore Excursion: 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua
  • Amber Cove & Taino Bay Shore Excursion: 2-person Buggy Tour
  • Amazing 3-Hour Horseback Riding at Puerto Plata with Pickup

Do you need travel insurance in the Dominican Republic? Yes, travel insurance in the Dominican Republic is highly recommended. Unsafe roads, water sports accidents, and food poisoning are only a few examples of when travel insurance could come in handy.   EKTA offers worldwide travel insurance  with 24/7 service and no hidden fees or restrictions.

If you are planning on venturing out by yourself, here are some great ideas of things to do in Puerto Plata.

Two of the top excursions from Puerto Plata city are visiting the Fortaleza San Felipa Fortress and the cable car ride up Mount Isabel de Torres.

Take in the stunning views of the whole city and coastline between waves of clouds from the tip of the mountain. You can even admire the massive statue of Christ. There is also a beautiful natural park up there, where you can walk around the paths and admire the incredible greenery.

One unique excursion from Puerto Plata is a visit to the stunning Damajagua Waterfalls. This natural wonder features a series of 27 waterfalls you can hike and swim through. And you can conveniently book a pick-up directly from the cruise port. You’ll get to explore various pools of crystal-clear water and even slide down natural water slides.

If you’re a fan of adventure, consider embarking on a zipline tour through the lush jungle canopy of the north. Experience the thrill of flying through the air as you take in stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Book a beach day at Ocean World Adventure Park for a more relaxing outing. This unique park features a private beach and opportunities to swim with dolphins, sea lions, and even sharks!

And when you get hungry, Taino Bay has plenty of options to satisfy any palate. Try the fresh seafood at Blackbeard’s Cove or indulge in some Dominican-style barbecue at La Ranita. Or make your way to the Puerto Plata city center for some delicious authentic Dominican cuisine.

One of the standout restaurants is El Manguito, known for its authentic dishes and welcoming atmosphere. And if you already are craving a taste of home, head to The Ponderosa Steakhouse for juicy burgers and sizzling steaks!

With so much to see and explore in Puerto Plata, your biggest problem here is going to be prioritizing, so good luck!

carnival in a town in dominican republic

Port of Samana

The Port of Samana is also located along the northern shores. However, it is a little further to the east. Samana is a peninsula overlooking Samana Bay, a vast cove shielded from the strongest winds from the Atlantic Ocean.

The port is located near the biggest city on the peninsula, Santa Bárbara de Samana. Keep in mind that some cruise lines refer to the stop as Cayo Levantado Port, named after the small island in Samana Bay.

Ship tenders have to shuttle passengers back and forth to the tender pier. Keep this in mind when you easily get seasick. It is a trip of about 10 minutes. Restroom facilities are available at the tender pier, but other than that the pier is not very developed.

Samana Bay is one of the most special Dominican Republic cruise ports for one reason: it is the only place where you can spot humpback whales.

Whale Watching in Samana

Samana Bay is world famous for being home to humpback whales between December and March every year. Thousands of humpbacks come here to mate or give birth. You can experience them on a whale-watching tour in Samana if your trip is during this period!

From Santa Barbara de Samana town on the bay’s edge, you can travel up to the northern part of the peninsula to El Limon. El Limon is lined with secluded pristine beaches.

Las Terrenas is infamous for its above-average nightlife. If you have an overnight stay, make sure to check it out.

Santa Barbara de Samana is the starting point for most whale-watching tours, as well as trips to Cayo Levantado. Cayo Leventado, or Bacardi Island, has amazing paradisaical beaches.

For something more relaxed, venture out to to the more remote and tranquil Playa Rincon. It is rated as one of the best beaches in the whole country.

A short drive from Santa Barbara de Samana is also the Cueva de Agua, one of the most famous Taino Archeological sites . Anyone with a heart for history has to check this out!

On this peninsula, you also find the Cordillera Samana . Cordillera Semana is an impressive lush green mountain range with over 60 types of palm trees and several waterfalls and natural wonders.

La Romana Cruise Terminal

La Romana is a lesser-known gem of the Dominican Republic cruise terminals. It lies south of Punta Cana. This little town is home to the Casa de Campo resort, famous for its golf courses, beaches, and upscale amenities.

If you’re arriving in La Romana on a cruise, a terminal building with a modern vibe welcomes you, with various shops, restaurants, and tour operators ready to take you on shore adventures. The terminal is also called Sugar Breeze Terminal.

Many cruises to La Romana usually come from Aruba , Bonaire , and Curacao or other Caribbean gems. La Romana is also a famous starting point for Caribbean cruises because it is close to major airports.

Especially Carnival Cruise Line makes use of that opportunity.

  • Shore Excursion: Viva Wyndham Resort For The Day With Unlimited Food & Drinks
  • Half-Day ATV of La Romana Special for Crucerita Guided Tour

One of the most popular shore excursions from La Romana is a trip to Bayahibe . It is just 25 minutes from the port. Bayahibe is a charming fishing village on the edge of the Parque Nacional del Este.

From there, you can board a catamaran or speedboat to Isla Saona for the day, a picturesque island with white sand beaches, turquoise water, and swaying palm trees!

Isla Saona is a natural paradise with plenty of pristine coral reefs, mangrove forests, diverse wildlife, and pristine beaches. You can sunbathe, swim, go snorkeling, or explore the island’s hidden coves and lagoons while you are there.

You can also visit the famous resort and beach havens Punta Cana and Cap Cana from La Romana.

They are less than an hour’s drive away. In Punta Cana, you find a variety of beach bars, cafes, and even upscale restaurants. If you’re looking for something more adventurous to do, you can book a zipline tour or a horseback ride through the Dominican countryside here as well.

The Zip Line Adventure Park in La Romana offers a thrilling ride over the lush tropical forest and stunning views of the Chavon River and the Caribbean Sea!

La Romana town is known for its delicious seafood, particularly the freshly caught red snapper and grilled shrimp. If you are tired of cruise line menus, this is a great option.

Many restaurants offer a prix-fixe menu that includes your choice of appetizers, entrees, desserts, drinks, and coffee. Savor the flavors of the Dominican Republic while enjoying the warm hospitality of local hosts!

In the Dominican Republic, there are several transportation options available for getting around from the cruise ports. If you want to explore the country without a guided tour, find some options here.

Here are some common methods of transportation available at Dominican Republic Cruise Ports:

  • Taxis: Taxis are a convenient and widely available way of transportation in the DomRep. At the cruise ports, you can find official taxi stands where licensed taxis operate. Agree on the fare beforehand and make sure the meter is on, otherwise, they might try to scam you!
  • Private Transfers: This is a great way to get around the island. Make sure to pre-book a Private Transfer before your cruise to have an enjoyable day without worries.
  • Public Buses: Public buses, known as “guaguas” or “carros públicos,” are a cheap way to get around the Dominican Republic. While they are a budget-friendly option, they can be crowded and the schedules might be a bit off.
  • Car Rentals: Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore the Dominican Republic at your own pace. I can advise you to book your rental car in advance with DiscoverCars. Then you can pick it up at the cruise port and get driving right away.
  • Walking: If you’re interested in exploring a little bit around the cruise port or nearby attractions, walking is a good option. Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial, for example, is a pedestrian-friendly area with narrow streets and historic sites within walking distance from the port.

When using any form of transportation in the entire Caribbean, consider safety and reliability. Stick to reputable taxi companies, only use licensed transportation services and always be alert for scams!

Royal Caribbean utilizes two main ports in the Dominican Republic. The first is Amber Cove, located near Puerto Plata on the north coast. This modern facility offers a variety of amenities, including shops, restaurants, and adventure activities. The second is La Romana, situated on the southeast coast. From here, passengers can explore nearby attractions such as Saona Island and the historic Altos de Chavón village.

Cruise ships do not typically dock directly in Punta Cana. Punta Cana is primarily known for its resorts and beautiful beaches rather than being a cruise port. However, some cruise lines may offer excursions or day trips from nearby cruise ports, such as La Romana, to Punta Cana, allowing passengers to explore the area’s stunning coastline and enjoy its popular tourist attractions.

La Romana, Dominican Republic Cruises

La Romana is all about white sand beaches and the ocean breeze. It is the perfect port for some tropical adventure. Adrenaline seekers can go ziplining, snorkeling, and take a dune buggy ride. Be witness to several species of monkeys at Monkeyland. Some are so tiny they even wrap around your arm! Those fond of premium cigars must visit the Altos de Chavon Cigar Factory. Visit the idyllic Catalina Island if you have some time on your hands.

Highlights of La Romana

La Romana is the perfect place for a family vacation. The diverse attractions, delicious food, and exhilarating adventures will please every traveler! Here are some reasons why La Romana is a great family destination.

1. History and Culture

This oil town developed its modern history in the early 19th Century. In 1917, however, a sugar plantation was built, and the economy of our small city shifted to sugar production. Living and working in our little paradise brought people from all over the Caribbean . During the 1970s, a 16th-century Mediterranean village, Altos de Chavón, and resorts like Casa de Campo contributed to La Romana's success as a tourist destination . In La Romana, you can visit both of these beautiful cultural attractions!

2. Local Gastronomy

With the addition of a dash of Middle Eastern influence, Dominican cuisine combines Spanish, Tano, and African elements. We season our dishes with flavors from around the world and make them with heart and soul. The Dominican Republic has many cultural and traditional traditions, which are reflected in its food. We make our cuisine unique by incorporating texture, spices, and sauces. There is a meaning to our food; there is a purpose to it. La Romana is a great place to discover the flavors of the Dominican Republic. Whether you're looking for friendly service or a wide variety of options, there's always a local restaurant nearby.

3. Cigar Factory Tour

Tobacco plants are transformed into beautiful handmade cigars in a long process. Vegafina premium handmade cigars are made using wrappers and binders from all over the world. Your guide will show you these wrappers and binders once you enter the factory. Discover why nearly all of the world's premium cigars are made in the Dominican Republic, a country known as "Cigar Country." Here you can watch the process of cigar making from bunching, rolling, and packaging. Tobacco leaves grown in the "vegasfinas," or fine plains, combine perfectly with sunlight, moisture, and soil composition to produce VegaFina. VegaFina Cigars and other world-renowned brands will be available in the cigar megastore at the end of the tour.

Interesting Spots to Visit in La Romana

A variety of tours, beaches, restaurants, watersports, ziplining, golf courses, boating, shopping, golf, and golf courses fill La Romana with activities and places. Here are a few top exciting sites we've listed for your convenience.

1. Altos de Chavon

A famous La Romana attraction, Altos de Chavon, is a 16th-century Mediterranean village in the Dominican countryside. Italian cinematographer and designer Jose Antonio Caro meticulously designed Chavon, but local artisans handcrafted the detailed designs. There are street boutiques where local artists sell their unique creations after learning pottery, weaving, and silk screening. To foster cultural exchange, Altos de Chavon also exhibits work by Dominican artists.

2. Cueva de Las Maravillas

In La Romana of the Dominican Republic, there is a national park called Cueva de Las Maravillas. The nature reserve is also located on Hispaniola, an island in the Caribbean. You will be guided through these caves with lights, providing a glimpse into their rich history. Indigenous tribes once lived on the islands, and their drawings can be found in the caves. The tickets will be considerably lower if you pay in Dominican pesos. Because the paths may be slippery, wear good sneakers. When you tip your tour guide, you will be allowed to take pictures.

3. Minitas Beach

Golf carts can easily access Playa Minitas, which has a beautiful beach. There are also 18 holes of golf and a beach with innovative cocktails and lounge chairs so you can relax after your rounds. La Romana's Casa de Campo is home to the peaceful and relaxing beach of Playa Minitas.

4. Dune Buggy Trip

Dune buggy trips are one of the most adventurous activities you can enjoy in La Romana. The best way to spend 4 hours is with Crazy Wheels. Experience the culture and history, ride the dune buggies, chew on a sugar cane, and meet some excellent instructors. There will be some mud, but you'll have a blast and enjoy the ride. Drive through the Dominican back streets and fields in buggies or quad bikes, which depart from Bahia Principe. If you want to purchase the disc, a guy films the riding experience. The experience of riding both is enhanced if you switch to quads. A bandana is a good accessory, as well as cheap clothes and closed-toe shoes.

5. Saona Island

There is something extraordinary about visiting Saona Island! Its 110 km2 is home to the best underwater formations on the Dominican coast, including coral reefs. Birds and reptiles are abundant, living in the island's interior forests, mangroves, and coastal lagoons, as well as caves dating back to pre-Columbian times, including the famous Cotubanama, named after the Taino Cacique, who fled the, slaughters of Oviedo and was caught and executed there. As well as the "natural pool," you can also see aquatic species that live on the bottom of the sea in this area. Flamingos, starfish, and other marine species can easily be observed in their natural habitat. Also found here are endangered species of turtles, sharks, dolphins, whales, and manatees. Visitors to the island have access to toilets, showers, and lunch tables.

When to Visit La Romana?

Rain showers are more frequent in the Dominican Republic in May, June, August, and September due to its tropical climate. Temperatures is cooler in November through April, while they are hotter in May and October.

La Romana Cruise Port • A Crew Member’s Guide

Oh, La Romana cruise port! My old friend! The Dominican Republic is a popular stopping place on plenty of Caribbean cruises, with a plethora of ports to choose from. And La Romana cruise port is one of the most visited of them all, with a sizeable terminal which is the perfect place for welcoming large groups of passengers.

As a crew member, I’ve visited La Romana cruise port- also known as Sugar Breeze terminal – more times than I can count over the years, so here’s my personal (crew member’s) guide to this busy Dominican Republic port.

Transferring to the cruise port

If you’re starting (or finishing) your Caribbean cruise from La Romana cruise port, you will likely be flying into Punta Cana airport. The journey takes about an hour by road, and it’s a good idea to pre-book your travel from Punta Cana to La Romana.

What’s in port?

La Romana cruise port is one of the most well-equipped in the Caribbean, and simultaneously one of the calmest. The port can only fit one ship in at a time, which is great for crowd control. Other ports like St John’s in Antigua , or Bridgetown in Barbados , may have parking spots (or berths, if you want to get technical about it) for a seemingly infinite number of gargantuan ships, but in my opinion this makes for a whole load of overcrowding.

The port is on the edge of the city, on the very edge of an estuary into the Caribbean Sea, and it’s incredibly well-equipped when it comes to passenger comfort. As well as the usual duty free terminal building filled with bottles of rum and chocolate and cigars, there’s a sizeable market square filled with shops and stands selling paintings, jewellery, rows and rows of beach cover ups, and an entire flock of brightly-painted wooden flamingos and parrots. There are also a few bars and coffee shops dotted around.

The best thing about La Romana cruise port though, is the pool.

The swimming pool with its very own swim-up bar, is a very recent addition; when I began working the season in November 2022, the pool was still in construction. Now, in early March 2023, the pool has been open for a while and every couple of weeks a new bar opens- there’s one left still in construction.

The pool in La Romana is completely free to use, and there’s also no charge for the sun loungers- of which there are plenty.

Where to get a taxi at La Romana cruise port

Like a lot of Caribbean cruise ports you’ll find the ‘official’ (which sometimes basically means ‘licensed’) taxi drivers just inside the terminal gates. These drivers all wear a uniform, and the price of each journey is set per passenger depending on where you want to go. On one hand, this is great as there’s no need for haggling. On the other, sometimes a haggle is necessary; the prices are set high.

Once you exit the car park containing the taxi rank, head out of the side entrance that is parallel to the ship. There are always plenty more taxi drivers waiting here, and these guys are open to negotiation on price. The later in the day you leave (and the fewer potential customers are), the better price you can negotiate.

Closest beaches to La Romana cruise port

One of the main reasons that it’s so nice to have a pool in the cruise terminal at La Romana, is that you can’t just walk to the closest beach. Bayahibe is around twenty-five minutes away by car, although if you don’t fancy splashing the cash on a taxi (or just want a more authentic Caribbean experience), you can catch a bus from the main road to Bayahibe for around $1.50.

Bayahibe is as popular with locals as with tourists, and that’s why I appreciate it. The sandy beach is lined with trees, and there are plenty of beach bars and restaurants to grab a drink or some food from. Slightly further along the coast is Playa Dominicus , with its blue and white striped lighthouse. There are more resorts around this beach, so as a result the beach feels slightly more ‘groomed.’ Both beaches are great for families as the water is fairly shallow for a long way; just watch out for the odd sea urchin.

Best shore excursions from La Romana cruise port

I’ve got my own personal number one all time favourite place to visit from La Romana, but I’ll save the best till last and show you a few other options first.

There are plenty of things to do in La Romana other than head to the closest beach, like visiting Altos de Chavón , a replica Mediterannean village, or heading much further away to the private resort island of Isla Catalina . (Here’s a catamaran tour to the island.) It’s even possible to take a day trip to Santo Domingo, the capital city- although it’s definitely advisable to do this with a private tour like this one, just to make sure that all transportation is taken care of.

If you want to stay close to La Romana but still experience and learn about some of the local culture, this guided La Romana tour is ideal , with stops at Altos de Chavón, a cigar factory, and Casa de Campo included, as well as giving an overview of the city itself.

For those people who are feeling a bit more adventurous, and want to do something outside of the usual more touristic excursions, check out this snorkelling tour to the cenotes of Bayahibe. The tour is led by local guides who take you on a short hike through the jungle and then into the underwater world of these stunning caves.

a yellow house on the beach at Isla Catalina

But my absolute favourite number one place to visit from La Romana…

Without a doubt, the best excursion from La Romana cruise port is a visit to Isla Saona.

This stunning island is exactly what springs to most minds when you say ‘Caribbean.’ The island is an absolute paradise, and unlike the mainland there are no big hotels or buildings here, as Saona Island is a national park. It is downright glorious, and in my opinion is not just one of the most beautiful spots in the Caribbean, but one of the most memorable places I’ve ever been.

For a more detailed guide, head to the post I wrote on Isla Saona.

Or, if you’ve already made up your mind about this must-visit destination, go directly to book a tour to Isla Saona. This one picks you up directly from the cruise terminal – and includes lunch, transport to the island via speedboat, and also stops at the natural starfish-filled pools on the way back. If you’re looking for more of a party experience, this longer tour includes an open bar on board, and an extra stop at Bávaro beach.

I don’t care how you get there, just get there if you can .

Is it worth it to go into the city?

It’s possible to walk from La Romana cruise port to the city, however, there’s a slight catch. The police will only let tourists go so far, before stopping them for their own safety. So, despite the fact that La Romana is one of the Dominican Republic’s biggest cities, I’ve never been any further than the Jumbo supermarket. (Which, I have to say, is a brilliant supermarket and worth the walk if you need to stock up on toiletries and snacks.)

There’s also an amazing Italian restaurant and deli called Punto Italia which, if you’re craving pizza, is equally worth the journey. (Try the Pizza Imperial, it’s da bomb.) The waiters are great, and there’s a resident cat who I like to call Barbosa. (And on a side note, the wifi is also very good.)

The walk takes about fifteen minutes- past a baseball field and through a residential area complete with neighbourhood bars and chickens scratching in the dirt, across the train tracks, and over the bridge along the main road. The sun in the Dominican Republic is powerful and the humidity is high; so get ready to sweat. Once you reach the main road, there’s often heavy traffic complete with heavy traffic noises. Here and there women sell avocados (the greenest, most ginormous avocados I’ve ever seen) out of buckets, and men sell newspapers and coconuts from portable roadside stands.

When there are ships in port, tourist police are stationed at intervals along the fifteen minute walk; so if you’re not sure of the way, they’ll be sure to help you out.

women selling fruit in La Romana Dominican Republic

So, technically you could dock at La Romana cruise port and never leave the terminal. But in my opinion, it’s so very worth it to get outside and explore for even a short time; whether on a day long excursion to an island, or a short walk through the neighbourhood.

Logistical Statisticals

  • Currency in the Dominican Republic is Dominican Pesos, and one peso equals about 0.17 Euros.
  • Most shops, buses and taxi drivers accept US dollars as well, although any change you get back will normally be given in local currency.
  • Don’t walk about with all your valuables on display! I’ve never had any problems with safety in the Dominican Republic, however theft is not unheard of.
  • Spanish is the official language in the Dominican Republic, and at least understanding a little bit of the language will get you far!

Thanks for the information on the cruise port. Do you know if we can enter the area before we board the cruise ship? It’s where the ship is originating from.

Hi! Yes, normally when cruises begin at La Romana cruise port, all passengers pass through an outdoor check-in area at the entrance to the cruise terminal. (Everything is very well signposted and there will be plenty of crew as well as port staff to help guide you.) You’ll receive your boarding card at this check-in area, which is also your ID for getting in and out of the cruise terminal. Once you have this, you’ll be free to move around the cruise terminal, go to the pool, bars within the terminal etc. as you please; so even if you don’t want to board the ship immediately or you know you can’t get into your cabin until later in the day, you can use these facilities anyway.

Are there any hotel for a one night stay near the terminal. We will be flying in the day before the cruise.

Hi! The Hotel El Dorado is a good choice for passengers starting a new cruise; it’s only about 15 minutes away in a taxi and is really highly rated. The Hilton Garden Inn is in a similar area and is another good choice. These are both in the Playa Caleta area; you could also look at hotels in the Bayahibe area although these are further away by comparison.

If you want something more luxurious to start your holiday with, Casa de Campo is a nearby luxury resort where it’s possible to book one night stays.

Let me know if this helps!

Thanks for sharing this insightful guide! As a cruise enthusiast, I always appreciate firsthand perspectives from crew members. La Romana Cruise Port sounds like a fascinating destination with a rich blend of culture and activities. Can’t wait to explore it on my next voyage!
