Floating Bungalows Cheow Lan Lake

👇 But first, are you in a hurry? Before we get started with what to expect when you stay at the floating bungalows Cheow Lan Lake, this is the tour that I booked and I loved it.

We spent two nights on the floating bungalows Khao Sok National Park. This tour will pick you up from your accommodation in Ao Nang, Krabi Town, Ao Nam Mao, Klong Muang or Tubkaek Beach, which makes things super easy for you to travel to Khao after spending some time in the islands.

You can prebook your tour online here to reserve your spot especially if you are traveling to Thailand during busy season (dry season from November to early May) as Khao Sok is a trending and popular destination in Thailand.

How to Get to the Cheow Lan Lake Floating Bungalows

Most people going on a Khao Sok Floating Bungalows tour package are usually already in the National Park.

You can arrange a private transfer for 1500 baht.   That’s the going rate everywhere, I asked around.   Unless of course you haggle with a taxi and that’s if you find a taxi.

Save the hassle and book the private transfer.   If you are traveling with a group, it gets much cheaper which the more people you split the private minivan with.

They picked us up promptly at 9 am just as they said.   Per usual, I waited til the last minute to pack my weekend pack, was hustling to the reception and the van was already here.   They even had a sign being held upside down with my name on it waiting for us.  Adorable.

It took about an hour to reach the boat ramp.   From there we hopped on a longtail boat and 30 minutes later we arrived at Phutawan Floating Capsules.

Spending the Night at the Khao Sok Floating Bungalows

The small lodge on the lake is breathtaking beautiful.   Although I imagine any of the raft houses in Khao Sok you book on Cheow Lan Lake is a stunning site.

We went with the Phutawan Floating Capsules and it was such a great choice.   There are 30 capsules and each capsule can accommodate up to three or four people.   They all have a private patio complete with a ladder to get in and out of the lake gracefully.

We booked the Khao Sok Lake Floating Bungalows tour as a two night trip.   Booking two nights on a floating bungalow inside Khao Sok National Park was the BEST decision.

It’s so relaxing and peaceful.   On the second day we had ample time to chill on the deck by reception with a Thai tea in hand.  This was especially rewarding as we were the only ones there.   Our entire group moved on after the first night as they all booked a one night stay.

Traditional Thai Dishes

Traditional Thai dishes at the F loating Bungalows Khao Sok

Let’s talk about the food at this specific Khao Sok floating bungalow.   6 meals where included with our package.   2 breakfast, 2 lunch and 2 dinners.   MEALS WERE HUGE.

The first picture is lunch and the second picture is breakfast.   They serve only traditional Thai dishes, we were definitely eating local.   We were so stuffed but it was so good!

Some of the dishes were Tom Gai, an entire Fried Fish, Massaman Curry (my favorite) and heaps of steamed rice.

Included Khao Sok Lake Activities

Now that you’ve booked a floating bungalow, you’re in perfect location to experience Khao Sok Lake.   Cheow Lan Lake  is one of the most spectacular places I’ve ever seen.

The mountain range is a dramatic limestone karsts that stick high up into the air.  Formed millions of years ago, the range starts in Guilin, China and runs through much of Thailand.

Things to do in Khao Sok

Cheow Lan Lake Boat Tour

One of the best ways to explore Khao Sok National Park is on a boat tour.   A typical Cheow Lan Lake tour will take you by Khao Sam Kloe (the Guilin of Thailand) and to Coral Cave via bamboo raft.

The long tailboat ride through the lake is like a dream.   The dynamic mountains jutting out of the water is some of natures best work.

Fun Fact:   Cheow Lan Lake  is a man made and  was built in 1987.  It took a year to divert a nearby river and flood the 185-square-kilometre basin.

Thailand is lush and green, that’s because it get 1,200-4,500 mm of rainfall each year.   Chances are, you’re going to get rained on when you’re exploring the lake.   Trust me, this only adds to the experience.

We got poured on before we reached our first destination.   The longtail boat takes you to a part of the lake where you then have to trek through the rainforest to get to the other side where a bamboo raft is waiting for you.

Wearing something quick drying would be a good choice.   It took about 20 minutes to trek up and down a muddy trail.   Also leaches live here.   Wear flip flops to be able to check for the tiny little blood suckers.

Pakarang Cave i n Khao Sok

The bamboo raft then took us 15 minutes to the coral cave.   The Pakarang Cave was a nice refugee from the constant drizzle outside.

We rafted and trekked back to the longtail boat.   After stopping at a spot looking for wild elephants.   Yes there are 10 elephants that live freely here and can be spotted freely drinking water around the lake!

Sadly we spotted no elephants but we had the most magical journey back to the raft house.   It started dumping rain again and it was so beautiful.

The water was a milky blue, with black trees stumps sticking out of the water and with a misty, mountainous background.   Add in the heavy rains, it was my favorite moment of the trip.  I felt so alive being outside listening to the rain cascade down on me from the heavens above.

List with floating raft house resorts in Khao Sok National Park (Cheow Lan Lake).

There are 15 or 16 different floating house parks on the Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park . They function as remote islands on the fresh waters between the lime stone cliffs. Electricity is usually generated by diesel engines and solar panels. Supplies need to be transported by boat. Wi-Fi and mobile phone network are often not available. Many resorts offer their guests only a mattress on the floor instead of a real bed. So don’t expect too much luxury and relative high prices here. But its all worth it.

Swasdee Kop. Yes, I (we, two) are coming to Kho Sok Park in April “23. There are Numerous accomodations around the Lake and, certainly, we will need a hotel/resort. My thoughts are cluttered as to Actually seeing the limestone karsts; which I have seen to be compared to Halong Bay. Okay, the introduction is finished. Question: it is possible to hire a long-tail, directly, from one of the 14-15 floating resorts on the lake ( no tour )? Kop Khun Kop: mee kwahmsuk

Exclusive Look Inside the World’s First Self-Sustaining Floating Home

Circular shaped floating home drone image three outriggers

On a Wednesday night in Panama City, robotic dogs greeted guests at the entrance of a hotel conference room where a party was being held. Inside, virtual reality stations transported users to locations hundreds of miles away, girls dressed in cosmic outfits blew bubbles from ray guns, and partygoers were encouraged to dress in retro-futuristic attire—a recommendation that many creatively obliged. Though the bass-heavy music and strobe-lit room could’ve been mistaken for a Miami club, the message from the party was clear: The future was here.

Man holding a small Jetsons figurine

Ocean Builder’s CEO Grant Romundt holds a Jetsons figurine at the SeaPod launch event.

The evening kicked off a two-day launch event hosted by Ocean Builders , a Panama-based ocean innovation technology company. “My mission for tonight is to share with you a vision for a positive future,” Grant Romundt, Ocean Builder’s CEO, told a crowd of hundreds that united prospective buyers and prospective business partners. In this idyllic world, cities wouldn’t be confined to land, but would be just as comfortable as any that were; homes would give back to the environment instead of only taking from it; and technology would turn a building previously used only for shelter into a livable and optimizable assistant. And all of it would be possible with the company’s crown jewel, the home hundreds flew out to see: The SeaPod.

Part of a growing trend in urban design known as seasteading, the SeaPod is described as the world’s first eco-restorative floating home. With a shape similar to an oversized lollipop, the pod is supported by steel tubes filled with air that push the structure up from below the waves. This engineering—developed by Ocean Builder’s president and head of engineering Rüdiger Koch—keeps the home substantially more stable than a vessel that floats directly on the water, making ocean living more comfortable. Inside, a personalized smart ring controls over 150 smart technologies, allowing owners to configure the home to their specific preference—for example, what music should be playing when they walk in. It’s also the company’s hope that as SeaPod communities form above water, marine ones will flourish below by growing on the steel, similar to an artificial reef.

If it feels like an amalgamation of many different concepts—a smart home, a floating home, an environmentally friendly home—it’s because it is. “I’m basically creating the world I want to live in,” Romundt tells AD. For four years he lived in a more traditional floating home in Canada that he’d decked out with smart home tech and quickly fell in love with the lifestyle, wanting to share it with others. “The only reason I left was to come to Panama to build my own dream floating home.” The day after the party, attendees at the launch event got to see this fantasy become a reality when Ocean Builder’s officially unveiled the first-ever completed SeaPod.

SeaPod floating in Linton Marina Bay

The SeaPod Eco floating at Linton Bay marina in Colón, Panama.

“This is a building that is being designed from the inside out,” Koen Olthuis, the SeaPod’s architect and founder of Waterstudio.NL , tells AD. Incredible views and expansive windows were one of the most important design elements, he explains, hence the pod-like form. However, the circular shape is also largely inspired by plane engines, since “these kinds of shapes are not influenced too much by the wind,” Olthuis continues. Furthermore, a round structure eliminates a front or back, which is integral in this type of home where owners enter through stairs at the base.

The interiors lean more minimalistic, though these could easily change as owners decorate in their own style. “I really wanted to be able to have a feeling of openness where you just walk in and relax,” Romundt says. The entry stairway leads to an open concept kitchen and living room area, and the bedroom and bathroom are around the corner on the other side of the pod. Storage space and a washer and dryer are downstairs, and the roof is also accessible for additional outdoor space.

The Dutch architect designed two SeaPod models: the SeaPod Flagship, an 833-square-foot and three-level pod, and the SeaPod Eco, an 845-square-foot and single-floor home, which was the version displayed at the event. Ocean Builders also plans to launch two Greenpods—both a flagship and eco model—that visually resemble their water counterparts, only designed to be built on land. Each SeaPod includes panoramic windows, an outdoor patio space, and three customizable outriggers that can add a hot tub, outdoor dining room, or jet dock to the home, among other available modifications. SeaPods start at $295,000 and go up to $1.5 million, depending on the model and upgrades. All models are currently available for presale with a $100 deposit.

Each SeaPod comes with an outdoor patio space.

Diana Pienaar, a prospective SeaPod buyer, wasn’t actively looking for an ocean-front home, but after stumbling upon the Ocean Builder’s website, “I was smitten,” she tells AD. She was originally drawn to the home because of its endless sea views, though she also admires the pod’s environmental benefits. “I have really never previously been interested in living on a boat of any kind,” she says. Though the SeaPod is technically a marine vessel, “I still view it as more of a house.” She plans to make use of the customizable outriggers to add a gazebo and glassed greenhouse to her home, she says. “It is not often that you are able to find a haven away from the stresses and pressures of every day life…[the SeaPod] is not only self-sustaining, but also full of all the high-tech, modern amenities we all love.”

Living room with white walls and modern furniture

The model SeaPod was staged with modern furniture. Each SeaPod features a combination of built-in and movable pieces.

This French Château Is on the Market&-and It Costs Nothing

And self-sustaining it is—floating in the middle of the ocean, after all, makes this an essential detail (during the launch, however, the house was placed near a series of docks for easy touring). Solar electric power is used as the primary power source, though there is a backup generator should it be needed. Rainwater collection handles most of the plumbing needs in the home, providing water for showers, washing machines, and both the kitchen and bathroom sinks. According to Romundt, just five minutes of rain is enough water to last a day for these purposes. Drinking water comes from a desalination machine, which also serves as a backup water supply should there be insufficient rainfall. Though desalination removes needed minerals from water, technology in the house adds these nutrients back in so the water is healthy to drink.

“The cool thing is that this is really the evolution of structures that we’ve been doing for decades,” Olthuis says. His firm specializes in designing floating structures to counter problems caused by urbanization and climate change . “It’s not the floating homes we have in Sausalito [California] or Amsterdam—that’s the old school. This is the new frontier,” he says. For him, this is most evident through the fact that, being self-sufficient, SeaPods can move, whereas most current floating homes are plugged into the grid and placed very close to shore.

With flexible structures, an urban community can mirror whatever needs residents may require in the moment. In winter, this could mean civic buildings are placed closer together to minimize traveling in the cold. In the summers, maybe the community is arranged around a public floating park, for example. “The same way elevators changed our cities from horizontal cities to vertical cities, the SeaPod will be the first element that turns static cities into dynamic cities,” Olthuis said at the ribbon cutting ceremony. “I hope you’ll look back on this day and understand that today started the future.”

Podlike structure on sandy dry ground

A SeaPod Flagship, Ocean Builder’s multi-floor model, in production at the company’s factory in Colón

Still, creating the future hasn’t come without challenges. “We’d never done anything like this before,” Juan Carlos Araujo Torres, an Ocean Builders employee who worked on constructing the first SeaPod, tells AD. “Many of us know about construction and building, but because it’s never been done before, this is a lot of trial and error,” Torres says. And just as the second day of the launch event wrapped up, that sentiment became overwhelmingly clear when at about 4 p.m., the SeaPod tipped over into the ocean.

Modern kitchen with white cabinets and new appliances

The kitchen includes modern appliances and a built-in table for eating or working.

Within hours, it was upright again, but not before onlookers—both at the marina and across the world, thanks to social media —questioned the viability of the home. “We had a plumbing malfunction,” Romundt explains. The model home was equipped with a jacuzzi on one of the spars, which, unknown to Ocean Builders, had a small leak. The air tubes, which were originally all connected, allowed the water to spread, making the pod heavier and heavier until it toppled over. Now, “we have separated the tubes into six independently sealed compartments, so a small leak can’t spread,” Romundt says, adding that no one was hurt because of the malfunction. The company also released a statement further explaining what exactly went wrong. According to Romundt, within a few weeks, Ocean Builders employees had begun taking turns spending a few nights each in the SeaPod.

Though not how the day was supposed to end, the company believes it was just a minor setback. There is a saying in Panama, Torres says, “ Del dicho al hecho hay mucho trecho ,” which means there’s a big stretch between saying something and doing something. It’s a thought that crept its way into conversation again and again throughout the Ocean Builders’ launch, even before the error.

“People have a great idea, and they want you to design something, but most of these projects don’t come to completion,” Olthuis said earlier in the day. “It takes courage, money, vision, and persistence to get through the years.” The fact that one SeaPod was built already feels like a milestone many don’t reach. While building the home, Torres says the construction crew used each day as a learning opportunity; for the company, this is just another one.

Pienaar heard about the malfunction, but says it hasn’t changed her interest in the SeaPod. “Having worked in software research and development previously, I understand the need to occasionally work out unexpected challenges,” she says, adding she’s looking forward to her SeaPod that “will ultimately become my dream home.”

Over the coming months, Ocean Builders plans to continue building pods off the coast of Panama before expanding to other parts of the world. Eventually, they hope to send homes anywhere in the world where there is water. It’ll be challenging, they say, but also worth it. As Romundt puts it, “If you have a vision, you have to believe in it and go out and make it happen.”

Las Balsas: The world's longest raft journey

Twelve men, seven nationalities, three rafts, six months and one epic 14,000-kilometre trans-Pacific voyage. Curator Kim Tao interviews Luis Guevara from the 1973 Las Balsas expedition, which completed a record-breaking crossing of the Pacific Ocean from Ecuador to Australia on three balsa-wood rafts.

Luis Anibal Guevara was born in 1949 in the Ecuadorian capital of Quito, situated 2,850 metres above sea level and far from the Pacific Ocean. He was the eldest of six siblings; his father was a politician and his mother a dressmaker and talented cook who instilled in him a passion for travel and learning something new every day. In 1966 Luis was a cadet in the Ecuadorian Navy when he crossed paths with the Spanish explorer Vital Alsar. It was a meeting that would change the course of Luis’ life.

The 12 sailors from the Las Balsas expedition in front of the Suntori Motel and Restuarant in Ballina, New South Wales, 1973. Luis Guevara is fourth from left

Vital Alsar had been inspired by the story of the legendary Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947, when Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl and his five crew sailed a primitive balsa-wood raft from Peru to the Tuamotu Islands in French Polynesia. Alsar aspired to double the 8,000-kilometre distance covered by Kon-Tiki in 101 days. Luis Guevara recalls:

I met Vital Alsar the day he was collected from the sea after a failed expedition close to the Galápagos Islands [some 900 kilometres west of mainland Ecuador]. Those days no one would believe it was possible for a balsa raft to navigate the ocean or keep afloat after several months on the Pacific. I asked him to consider me for the next expedition.

Luis’ opportunity would come in 1973. Three years earlier, Alsar and his three crew had successfully sailed a balsa-wood raft 13,800 kilometres from the Ecuadorian port of Guayaquil to Mooloolaba on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. This expedition, known as La Balsa (‘The Raft’), took 160 days and, at the time, was the world’s longest recorded raft voyage. Many attributed it to sheer luck, however, prompting Alsar to launch a new expedition in three rafts called Las Balsas (‘The Rafts’), to prove that the ancient civilisations of South America could have navigated fleets of balsa rafts to trade or migrate across the Pacific and settle in Polynesia.

For Las Balsas, Alsar recruited an international crew of 11 men. Two had participated in the 1970 La Balsa expedition – Marc Modena from France and Gabriel Salas from Chile. The others were Hugo Becerra, also from Chile; Jorge Ramirez from Mexico; Fernand Robichaud, Greg Holden and Gaston Collin from Canada; Tom McCormick, Tom Ward and Mike Fitzgibbons from the United States; and Luis Guevara from Ecuador.

In 1973, 24-year-old Luis left the Ecuadorian Navy and joined Las Balsas as a navigator. He says:

My navigation skills were not only learnt in the Salinas Naval Academy, but I also went to the Franciscan Order to look at some old manuscripts and learn the art of guiding a raft without rudder across the Pacific. I also felt I needed to prove for myself that my ancestors could use these rafts for long voyages before Cristóbal Colón [Christopher Columbus] discovered the Americas.

All 12 Las Balsas sailors were involved in building the three rafts Guayaquil , Mooloolaba and Aztlán , which were based on designs used by the indigenous South Americans before the arrival of Spanish explorers and conquistadors in the 15th and 16th centuries. Measuring 14 metres long and 5.5 metres wide, each raft was constructed from nine balsa-wood logs and had a thatched cabin to provide shelter for the crew. Luis remembers:

We all went to the jungle at the Hacienda la Clementina and cut the balsa trees in full moon [when sap rises and fills pores, helping to prevent waterlogging] to avoid them being too heavy and sinking during the trip. We also cut bamboo and caña de Guayaquil [a native bamboo]. Then we took the materials to Guayaquil and built the rafts alongside the Guayas River.

Luis notes:

It was all done by hand, carved and joined together with manila ropes. The most important part was to cut, by hand, the spaces required for the guaras – long pieces of hardwood used like a centreboard in different positions of the raft, to create stability and used instead of a rudder. If you lifted the guaras from starboard, the raft moved to port, and vice versa. This was different from the design of Kon-Tiki [now displayed at the Kon-Tiki Museum in Oslo, Norway], and it became quite a skill to move them just enough up or down, in order to navigate in a set direction.

Ahead of their departure in May 1973, the crew packed enough water supplies to last several weeks, after which they would rely on rainwater collected in buckets. In terms of food, Luis explains:

Most food was prepared in the same way as the old tribes from the coastal areas of Ecuador. Eggs were immersed in calcium sulphate to keep them good for four months. Sausages were prepared and immersed in pork lard to keep them for a long period of time. There were lots of grains, dried and fresh; potatoes; lots of different kinds of flour, made mostly from quinoa, corn and red beans; and also a bit of tequila from the Mexican Ambassador.

The bulk of their protein would come from freshly caught fish, such as tuna and dorado (mahi-mahi).

Luis took two pairs of jeans, two sweaters, half a dozen pairs of underwear, a diving suit and three Ecuadorian hats (Panama hats). He also carried a supply of his mother’s home-made chocolate, a photograph of his family, a banner from the Ecuadorian Navy and his passport (which he would subsequently lose during the voyage). The night before departure, Luis says:

I was requested to meet the highest-ranking officers from the port of Guayaquil. They were kind and proper, but literally told me that if I did not succeed for our history, then don’t bother to return. That is how important our expedition was to acknowledge the techniques of the indigenous people in the pre-Columbian era. I knew we will make history.

On 27 May 1973, thousands of people lined the Guayas River in Guayaquil to farewell Las Balsas. Luis recalls, ‘I was so happy to finally leave Ecuador as the preparations took about three months. We all knew that the expedition would not be any shorter than six months.’

Their route across the Pacific passed the Galápagos Islands, Society Islands, Cook Islands, Tonga and New Caledonia:

After the Galápagos, there were tropical storms coming from the south, which were quite strong. The whole crew had to work day and night for many days without end to keep the raft going. A raft is a totally different craft to navigate compared to a sailing vessel. It is heavy, lacks control and you are only one foot [30 centimetres] above water at all times, so you are wet most of the time. A storm near Rarotonga [in the Cook Islands] lasted for 10 days and created problems trying to keep the rafts close enough together. One time, my raft became separated from the other two rafts for a period of eight days. However, I knew we will find them further west and kept our bearing 270 degrees west for several days until we saw them as a dot on the horizon and reunited with them .

On 21 November 1973, after 178 days at sea, Las Balsas arrived at Ballina in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. The expedition had travelled 14,000 kilometres across the Pacific Ocean from Ecuador to Australia, eclipsing the previous record set by La Balsa in 1970. The rafts Mooloolaba and Aztlán landed safely at Ballina, but as Luis explains, ‘We [on Guayaquil ] were the last ones to finish the expedition as our raft was involved in a serious storm just in front of Ballina and broke down. We were collected by the Royal Australian Navy ship [HMAS Labuan ].’ 1

  Luis continues:

We had a great reception on arrival and I later had the pleasure of meeting [then Prime Minister] Gough Whitlam and several of his ministers when we went to [Parliament House in] Canberra. We had the opportunity to exchange stories of our past way of life on the rafts with the ministers and of the new enormous continent we had landed on. We did not know the magnitude of differences between those worlds.

While Luis had never intended to migrate to Australia, he states:

Ecuador had a military junta and I was not very happy to return. I never accepted the decoration offered to me by the Ecuadorian government. The Australian government was very supportive for us to stay and I gladly accepted their offer to stay in Australia. Now reflecting on this after many years, this was my best decision.

Luis found a job as a tradesman with Civil and Civic in Sydney, before enrolling to study at the University of New South Wales. He became a biomedical engineer, researching knee replacements and cochlear implants. He also became the first Honorary Australian Consul for the Republic of Ecuador.

Luis is married to New Zealand-born Maryanne Barnard and has two children, Elyse and Jean Paul. Elyse, also a keen sailor, studied medical sciences and works in medical research. Jean Paul joined the Royal Australian Navy and served in Iraq, before moving to the USA to study international relations. He met his partner Fran in the Galápagos and they now have a daughter named Isabela.

Luis Guevara, a self-proclaimed ‘proud Aussie’, was registered on the Welcome Wall by his wife, Maryanne. Asked to reflect on his role in Las Balsas, the longest recorded raft voyage in history, Luis says, ‘Modern navigation is so completely different to the old timeless navigation used by the pre-Columbian sailors. It is important to acknowledge the link between navigation and migration, and that the two come hand in hand, even these days’.

[1] Left to drift, Guayaquil ended up in Newcastle (nearly 600 kilometres south) and was later burned as scrap. Aztlán and Mooloolaba were moored on the Richmond River; the former was secured, while the latter eventually broke apart. Today a composite of these two rafts remains on display at the Ballina Naval & Maritime Museum on the north coast of New South Wales.

Plenty of steep limestone hills and many small islets are rising out of the water. amazing The atmosphere and overall appearance of the scenery around the Saichol Raft House Resort are similar to other rafts. The raft will place the location of all accommodation rafts in a row identical to a C shape. Behind the raft, a high mountain and a massive limestone cliff are facing east. As for the front of the raft, if you look through the water far away, it will be a tall mountain. The atmosphere in the morning will see a white mist floating back and forth alternately on the mountaintop, which can be seen from both the front and back of the raft. The Top 12 Things to Do in Omsk

Feel the love in the very heart of Russia

In Russia, all roads lead to Moscow , on account of the city's status as the national capital and its importance throughout history. If geography were the deciding factor, however, the Siberian city of Omsk would be the point where all Russia's roads converge—it's located literally in the heart of the country, approximately as far from Vladivostok as it is from the Belarusian border. Omsk boasts a spate of exciting attractions, even if you simply make a stop here as you ride the Trans-Siberian Railway eastward or westward.

Marvel at Assumption Cathedral

Chelsea Hicks/Flickr/CC BY 2.0

Orthodox architecture never gets old, even if you've been traveling in Russia for a long time. This is particularly the case when it comes to the Assumption Cathedral of Omsk, whose gold-and-turquoise domes look resplendent under the blue skies that bless Omsk during the warmer months of the year. The cathedral was built in 1891 under the orders Nicholas, the last Tsar of Russia.

Time Travel at Omsk Fortress

Ogg-omsk/Wikimedia Commons/CC BY-SA 3.0

The bad news? Much of what was once Omsk Fortress is now a residential area, with the only notable landmark that still stands being Tobolsk Gate (think Paris' Arc de Triomphe , but yellow and smaller). The good news? There's essentially no reason for a military fortification to exist in today's peaceful Omsk, which means you can stroll amid parks and cafés and imagine the area being war-torn—a small sacrifice to make in exchange for not being blown to bits.

Go Green at Ptich'ya Gavan'

Forinrap/Wikimedia Commons/CC BY-SA 4.0

Or white, as it were: Omsk is covered with snow several months of the year, which means that its prized Ptich'ya Gavan' central park is often more of a winter wonderland than the green reprieve you experience in summer. The park is popular with local families, to whom you can say "Privet" (Hello) as you walk past.

Walk on Omsk's Artsy Side

G0rn/Wikimedia Commons/CC BY 3.0

Although the building that houses Omsk District Museum of Visual Arts is unmistakably Russian, the collection you find inside is surprisingly eclectic for a city deep in Russia's interior. Recent collections have included a revival of Van Gogh's great works, among others. This is a particularly enjoyable Omsk attraction on cold winter days, when temperatures can drop far below freezing and sunshine can be rare.

Shoot for the Moon

Worldwide Planetarium Database

Though Omsk is a relatively large city, the skies over it become dark enough in the evening for stargazing. While visitors are not permitted to use the expensive telescopes housed inside, exhibits inside the museum provide a fascinating look into the cosmos, narrated by expert astronomical guides.

Shop on Lenin Street

yykkaa/Getty Images

Lenin Street's name is appropriate: Although it's the high street of a city thousands of miles from Moscow, the European-style architecture and cosmopolitan vibe you feel as you stroll past its boutique and cafés evokes the capital of Russia more than its forlorn interior. Local specialties you can purchase here include rustic jams made from local berries (and even, in some shops, cedar cones), as well as handmade rugs from Kazakhstan, which sits just south of Omsk.

Sample Siberian Cuisine

Quynh Anh Nguyen/Getty Images

Speaking of unique Siberian food, it's not just preserves made from the fruits of evergreen trees. Omsk is a great place to discover the flavors of Russia's wild interior, whether you eat zagutai and stroganini (Siberia's take on sushi) or classic Russian plmeni dumplings filled with decidedly Siberian ingredients, such as bear and rabbit meat. Vkusno ! (That's Russian for "delicious"!)

Enjoy Historical Houses—While You Still Can

Simon Richmond/Getty Images

The wooden houses that line Nikolskiy Prospekt aren't protected, but they should be. Historical structures that are unfortunately in a state of disrepair, these houses are slated for demolition at some unspecific point in the future. Be sure to catch a glimpse of these historical house before they're gone. There will, however, be at least one left standing for a long time. The Omsk State Art Museum is in a traditional wooden house.

Go to the Circus

Vladislav Domnich/Getty Images

Omsk State Circus is a popular spot for local families, whose children love the opportunity to see acrobatic performances and animals that wouldn't otherwise make appearance in Siberia. If you do attend a show here, keep in mind that ethics with regard to animal treatment might not match up with those in North America or Western Europe, to say nothing of the smell that can pervade the auditorium during and even after a show.

Be a Drama Queen

While there's no guarantee that any shows will be playing at Omsk Drama Theater at the time of your trip, a visit to this 19th century building is a spectacle in and of itself. While not as huge, say, as Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, it's nonetheless an ornate architectural wonder that hearkens back to a glorious time in history. The interior of the theater is even open during the daytime; ask the person who's inside if any tours are available when you turn up.

Explore Cities Deeper in Siberia

Tuul & Bruno Morandi/Getty Images

Siberia starts in Omsk, even if you can't continue far into it. If you don't plan to travel on the Trans-Siberian Railway, take one of two day trips from Omsk. Travel to Tobolsk, whose hilltop Kremlin is one of the most picturesque in all of Russia, and whose beauty inspired a photo by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev that ended up winning several awards. Or visit Tomsk, where you'll find a botanical garden dedicated to Siberian flora, and a museum that celebrates wooden architecture.

Ride the Trans-Siberian Railway

 lvinst/Getty Images

The idea of leaving Omsk behind can seem difficult, especially now that you've gotten to know this city in the heart of Siberia as well as you have. The mint-colored facade of Omsk Railway Station will make you smile, however, even if you're crying inside as you depart. Though it's not quite on the mid-line of the Trans-Siberian route between Moscow and Beijing , Omsk is a worthy starting place to begin a journey to either. If you head east make sure to stop in Irkutsk , the home of Lake Baikal and another underrated Siberian city.

Omsk: Western Siberia's hidden gem

Omsk was founded in 1716 when a wooden fort was constructed to house a Cossack unit in the area to protect the expanding Russian frontier from Central Asian nomadic incursions. It served various administrative functions throughout the 1800s and became infamous as a place of exile and incarceration. The city was rundown when selected as a hub for the Trans-Siberian railway in the 1890s. Many international trade companies and foreign consulates relocated here and the remnants of their offices can still be found in the city today.

The mystery of Kolchak’s gold

Omsk became the headquarters of the anti-Bolshevik white army led by Admiral Aleksandr Kolchak in 1918. In late 1918 there was a revolt in the city initiated by a leftist faction (Socialist Revolutionary Party or SPs) with 500 rebel deaths at the hands of Cossacks and Czechoslovak soldiers, a major factor in convincing the SPs to join the Bolsheviks. There is a large Soviet-era monument to the uprising at the corner of Lenina street and Broz Tito street.

Kolchak was entrusted with a large portion of the Tsarist’s gold reserves, yet amazingly lost much of it. Supposedly 250 million rubles were lost (about $8 million at the time). Legend has it that they were buried near the village of Taiga, yet numerous excavations have turned up nothing. The area still attracts the occasional fortune seeker.

Kolchak’s headquarters are located at what is today the  Omsk Regional Archives  at Broz Tito St., 3. Nothing shows how much times have changed as the imposing Kolchak statue that was unveiled in 2012 around the corner. The statue guards  Kolchak restaurant , a four-story culinary complex featuring a steak house, an Irish pub, a Central Asian café and an Italian eatery.  For more details on where and how to dig Kolchak's gold, see  Top Ten Mysterious Lost Treasures of Russia

Dostoevsky and the Tsar

At 1.15 million people Omsk dwarfs the region’s second largest city, Tara (population 28,000). The city is split by the River Irtysh into two sections (all places of interest are on the right bank) with downtown emanating from the River Om.

Most foreigners have heard of Omsk via writer Fyodor Dostoevsky who spent four years here as a prisoner (1849-1853). He spent most of his time in Omsk in squalor and chains and with no books besides the Bible, however, it left an indelible mark on his memory and influenced his future literary output. There is a statue of the writer in chains grasping a Bible at the corner of Partizanskaya and Spartakovskaya streets, where Dostoevsky undoubtedly stepped many times. A  museum dedicated to the author's time in Omsk  is located nearby at Dostoevskogo St. 1. The local university is also named for him.

Tarskaya Street is one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares. It features a monument to victims of Stalinist repressions and the Tara gates, originally built in 1792 as one of the four entrances to the Omsk fort. Nearby stands the Assumption Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Siberia. Future Tsar Nicholas II laid the first stone here in 1891 when making his way back to St. Petersburg after his Eastern journey.

In Omsk you are never more than a few steps from the village, made clear when one exits the center to the north, where most houses are wooden and roads unpaved. Stroll along Bulatova and Rabinovicha streets, a well-preserved ensemble of wooden architecture.

Omsk’s cultural heritage

The Pushkin State Library is worth a look with busts of Russian literary figures adorning the front side of the building. At the corner under the big “M” is one of several stations of the never completed Omsk metro. Construction began in 1992, but as of 2014 the project is again dormant due to financing problems.

One of Omsk’s most famous sons is Symbolist painter Mikhail Vrubel (1856-1910). Vrubel ignored contemporary trends and focused on themes from fairy tales, demons and religious subjects and also designed a majolica frieze for the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. Omsk’s Fine Arts Museum is named for him and features a number of  his works .

Over the years a number of tourists have tripped over the monument to Stepanych. This bust of a plumber rising from a sewer was the idea of Omsk’s former mayor after a trip to Slovakia in the 1990s. Stepanych has become one of the symbols of the city.

Omsk is a hockey town, with one of the major teams,  Avangard , in the KHL, Russia’s premiere professional league. Russian champions on several occasions, check out a match at Omsk Arena. But if you can’t catch a game there’s a large kiosk featuring the team’s merchandise at the airport.

Siberian   punk, jazz and the classics

While Omsk may not be on everyone’s radar musically, it does host a  musical theater  built just after the war. The building on 10 Let Oktyabrya Street is in the form of an enormous sloping grand piano.

Perhaps Russia’s most famous punk band,  Grazhdanskaya oborona  (Civil Defence), was formed here in 1982. The band was active until 2008 when lead singer Yegor Letov died of heart failure at age 43. Letov is buried at the Staro-Vostochnoe cemetery. A sprawling graveyard with thousands of graves, fans should stop at the administration for help in locating his grave.

In Russia, Omsk is known among the younger, tech-savvy generation primarily because of the “Omsk bird,” also known as Winged Doom. The origin of what became one of Russia’s most ubiquitous memes comes from a painting by German artist Heiko  Müller. One day in 2009 an Internet user posted this painting with the line, “Welcome to Omsk,” at the top. Additional versions menace viewers stating, “Don't try to leave Omsk,” and “Omsk is closer than you think.” Like many popular memes on the Internet, this one went viral and has become something like an unofficial symbol of the city.
