The Todra Gorge: How To Experience Morocco’s Most Beautiful Oasis

The Todra Gorge is considered by both locals and visitors as one of the most beautiful places in Morocco. Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

Todra Gorge in Morocco

Nestled at the western foot of the High Atlas Mountains sits one of the most beautiful places to visit in Morocco .

A natural cut in the mountains, which split Morocco’s Sahara region from its more populous Atlantic region, has been carved out of the landscape by a crystal-clear, spring-fed river. The result of millions of years of natural landscaping is the epically beautiful Todra Gorge.

The Todra Gorge, which is often referred to locally as the Toudgha Gorge, features 1,200 ft (400 meters) tall cliffs of bright red sandstone that seem to touch the brilliantly blue mountain skies. At the cliff’s base are a spring-fed stream feeding palm groves, Berber villages, and fruit plantations.

The Todra Gorge has been attracting locals for years. The glorious scenery and clean water have made this a popular stop for shepherds and travelers for centuries, but recently those in Morocco’s major cities, such as Fes and Marrakech , have been awakened to its beauty, adding to the weekend crowds that rush to the gorge.

The Todra Gorge is a stunningly beautiful destination that has become hugely popular among photographers, rock climbers, cyclists, and hikers. It’s also one of the most popular places in Morocco with kids . Families from across the country make day trips to the gorge for picnics, hikes, and celebrations.

We visited the Todra Gorge after a few days of exploring and camping in the Sahara Desert around Merzouga . Our road trip there involved stops in Ait Benhaddou along with some time underground exploring an ancient aqueduct system.

After several days of sand and grit, the bright rose rocks and emerald-green plant life offered a splash of color that we were grateful for.

How To Get To Todra Gorge

Table of Contents

Aqueduct in Todra Gorge

The easiest way to get to Todra Gorge is from the city of Ouarzazate . For many, this could mean flying into Ouarzazate International Airport or passing through from destinations such as Merzouga.

Whether you’re making the two-and-a-half-hour drive from Ouarzazate or heading across the mountains from Marrakesh, Rabat, or Casablanca, you’ll either need a car or a guided tour to get there.

Most day trip tours include stops along the way, sightseeing, and a taste of hiking or rock climbing. However, if you’d like to have a dedicated hiking or climbing adventure, I’d suggest registering for a rock climbing Todra Gorge experience. You can get a one-day rock-climbing tour or a multi-day climbing tour as well.

The road to Todra Gorge is paved and relatively easy to travel. But if you’re hoping to get to some of the best hiking or rock climbing spots, you may need a 4×4.

The Best Time To Visit Todra Gorge

Todra Gorge is popular year-round thanks to its shady location in the Atlas Mountains, where temperatures are generally slightly cooler than in the major cities. Although it can still hit highs of over 104°F (40°C ) during the summer season. It’s at its busiest during the spring and fall seasons when temperatures are cool and comfortable.

During the Eid holidays, many businesses in the Todra Gorge shut down, so it’s worth planning around that if you happen to be traveling then.

During the winter months, the Todra Gorge can get snowy, especially from December to February when temperatures can dip down below freezing and snow can remain in areas that don’t see much sun.

Things To Do In Todra Gorge

Waterfall in Todra Gorge

Apart from being stunningly beautiful and just being a pleasure to visit, there are many things to do in Todra Gorge to keep visitors and adventurers busy for a few hours to several days, depending on how much time they have to dedicate to their visit.

Whether you’re looking to enjoy some shopping, cultural activities, or just some casual relaxation along the river’s edge, here are some of the top Todra Gorge attractions to help you fill your time.

Stroll and Picnic Along the Todra River

One of my favorite things to do in the Todra Gorge is to simply wander along the Todra River, taking in the beautiful scenery. There are many hiking trails and walking paths to explore, and it’s quite easy to get around once you’ve reached the gorge itself.

If you want to do longer hikes, it might be wise to book a specific hiking tour around the region. You’ll find some absolutely epic hikes, including some that take you up through the mountains to nearby nomadic villages. This one-day hiking tour is a great option for those who don’t have multiple days to spend in the region.

Be aware that much of the casual strolls within the Todra Gorge run along the roadside, and during high season it can get very busy. Always keep your eyes open for vehicles whose drivers might be paying more attention to the scenery than to the road.

Rock Climbing

Rock climbing in Todra Gorge

Todra Gorge draws rock climbers from around the world. While there are several places in Morocco for rock climbing, no destination in the country welcomes more adventurers than this small canyon. There are more than 100 official climbing routes that cover all levels of difficulty. And yes, some routes are beginner-friendly as well.

For those who are just visiting the gorge, you won’t have to walk off the beaten path to see climbers on the sheer walls of Todra Gorge. Just look up, and you’re likely to see adrenaline junkies high up above you. And if you want to try it out for yourself, this 5-day Todra Gorge climbing tour might be for you.

Explore The Palm Groves and Fruit Plantations

The Todra Gorge is lined with palmeraie, the French word for groves or plantations. Many of the plantations within the gorge are date palm plantations. These elegant palm trees offer a splash of green to the rose-red stone of the Todra Valley and, during the spring and fall, are often ripe with fruit. Along with the palm trees, these plantations also house working farms with fruits and vegetables.

Surrounding the plantations are small villages with restaurants, shops, and homes. They make for a wonderful place to walk or cycle and experience the unique lifestyle of those who live within the valley.

Shop for Berber Carpets

todra gorge tour

Berber carpets are among the most popular souvenirs in Morocco. While many people purchase their carpets in large cities such as Marrakesh and Fes, most of the carpets are actually made in rural towns such as those in the Todra Gorge.

Berber carpets can be found throughout the area. We visited one in the town of Tingir near the source of the Todra River and had an excellent, no-pressure buying experience. If we had known the dimensions of our rooms beforehand, we probably would have left with a rug or two.

The co-ops house carpets of many different Moroccan styles, and they should be able to tell you the difference between each style. The experience usually includes a warehouse tour and plenty of mint tea.

Enjoy Your Time in the Todra Gorge, Morocco!

The Todra Gorge in Morocco is a marvelous place to visit. Yes, it is remote, raw, and beautiful. but that is all part of the adventure. I hope these tips will help you enjoy the most of your family travel to the Todra Gorge and that you’ll find the region as fascinating as we did.

Exploring Todra Gorge – A Natural Oasis

todra gorge tour

By  Alice Morrison

Deep in the rocky Atlas mountains on one of the roads to the Sahara from Marrakech lies the dramatic scenery of the Todra Gorge (called locally Toudgha Gorge), a natural oasis created by the River Todra carving its way through limestone for many centuries. The gorge looks almost prehistoric with canyon walls that reach over 400 metres in height (higher than the Empire State Building in New York).

One of Morocco’s top attractions for visitors, it’s a paradise for photography enthusiasts, climbers, bikers and hikers. The gorge has also been featured in the American TV show ‘Expedition Impossible’* and a 2012 Cadillac CTS advert.

It is an ideal spot to break the journey between Marrakech and the desert for an overnight or a couple of days but it equally lends itself to longer exploration.

Getting there

If you are flying, Ouarzazate International Airport, is the closest as it’s under three hours away by car. Marrakech International Airport is another, more popular, option as there are more flights coming in and out. You will need a car to then get into the gorge itself and you can either hire a car and drive yourself or at Epic we will provide you with a suitable car and driver who can also tell you all about the towns and places of interest you pass en route. The primary road is tarmacked but if you are going to go off piste, you will need a 4×4.

todra gorge tour

When to visit Todra Gorge

The most popular time to visit is spring and autumn when the weather’s cooler but not too cold. Be aware, though, that these are also the busiest times as the gorge is a popular spot, however there are plenty of less well known areas around to explore if you want to get away from the crowds. If you choose to come in summer, you will have the place to yourself but temperatures can soar into the 40s, and it is worth noting that many businesses shut down (especially for the Eid holy holidays if they hit in your travel window). If you come in winter, it might be best to avoid the snowy months of December to February as it can be very cold indeed.

What to do in Todra Gorge

There are many options to enjoy the gorge whether you are an active outdoors type, or prefer just to simply enjoy the scenery, soak up the culture, do a little bit of shopping for local handicrafts and maybe …. take a few photographs.

Picnic and hike:

The scenery is absolutely stunning and one of the best ways to see it is on foot. There are hikes we can arrange for all levels around the gorge. We can provide a guide and a picnic to enjoy on the route. This could be a half-day or day option depending on how long you want to spend there. If you want to do longer hikes which will take you deeper into the countryside, we can also arrange you one to suit your timetable and level of ability.

Mountain bike tour:

Epic organize many mountain bike tours in Morocco for Saddle Skeddadle, so we are well equipped with the knowledge and experience to plan a tour in the area for you. Or you can rent a mountain bike for a day to enjoy a different way of seeing the local area and getting fit. There is biking for every level but you will need a basic level of fitness if you want to tackle some of the fabulous technical routes around the gorge. If you just want to relax, then a ride through the palmeraie is ideal.

Rock climbing:

The gorge is the best spot in Morocco for rock climbing. There are more than 100 official routes that allow climbers to experience the gorge safely. There are routes for every level, many of which include multi-pitch routes. Beginners are welcomed here too as the gorge is a great place to learn. The Todra Gorge uses the French grading system – Sport Grades – so make sure that you have a grade conversion chart https://www.rockfax.com/publications/grades/ with you if you are used to working off a different system. Our two favourites are the classic ‘Eccentric Doctor’ which starts on a flake and ends over a bulge and ‘Big Ben’ which is full of crimpy holds.

todra gorge tour

Explore the Todra Palmeraie:

A palmeraie is the French word for a grove or plantation of date palm trees and the Todra palmeraie is a great example of a working date plantation. The graceful palms always give shade and, depending on what time of year you come, will be hanging with clusters of dates in different stages of development. The palmeraie also houses small villages and vegetable gardens and orchards of pomegranate trees are peppered throughout. It is the ideal place to explore at a relaxed pace on foot or by bike and to learn how dates are grown and harvested and get an insight into the lives of the farmers. It’s also a natural paradise and ideal for a picnic. Make sure to ask your guide for a taste of the date syrup which the people use here on their bread as an alternative to jam or honey.

Stop off in a village:

One of the highlights of coming to Morocco is getting to meet local people and making some real connections. Epic guides can take you to some lovely local villages and because they speak Tamazight the local language, can help you communicate with the people you meet along the way. The people of this region are Berber (Amazigh) and are famous for their hospitality. They will often invite you into their homes to drink tea and eat sweet dates with them. You will get to see the traditional red clay architecture at first hand and appreciate the intricacy of the irrigation systems that bring the water from the river into the fields. Life here is lived very simply but very richly as the community work together and the family units are strong. Most families will live off the land with a smallholding where they grow vegetables and fruit and some sheep and goats for meat. Often in the morning, you will see the women leading the family cow into a nearby field to graze.

Shop in a market:

Tinghir Weekly Market is one of the largest markets in Southern Morocco, which takes place on Mondays with a cattle market on Saturday. The market has been around for centuries and sells local produce; dates, olives, fruit, grain, spices and herbs as well as livestock, and local crafts, traditional clothing and shoes, furniture, teapots, bikes, plants and much more. You can take your time and stop in a make-shift café for mint tea.

Pick up a carpet:

It’s nice to shop outside of the cities where you can feel closer to the actual makers of artisan goods. Berber carpets can be found in the area, there is a kasbah located near the gorge and local villagers set up shop to sell their carpets on the route. Ask your guide for recommendations.

todra gorge tour

Explore around the area:

Epic can provide detailed inside track ‘ungoogleable’ itineraries for travelers who want to explore Southern Morocco based on their interests. We can arrange for you to stay a while in a very local area with no other tourists around, or create a whistle-stop travel plan which can include more well known places such as:

Ouarzazate :

Morocco’s, Little Hollywood, it is a great destination to add to your trip as a stop on the way to Todra Gorge. You can visit the ancient Berber Town on a hill used as a backdrop to Lawrence of Arabia; Ait Ben Haddou, or the Game of Thrones movie set. Pop into the Telouet Kasbah, a historically significant building that is. Visitors can also check out the film studio, tour the desert on a camel, or drive a 4×4 into the dunes.

This town is another great place to stop on your journey, it is known as the Gate of the Sahara, and has plenty to see. You can visit the Royal Palace, the bustling souq, the renowned fossil collection, and the Jewish cemetery. Stop off at one of the street cafes, or head into the desert for a 4×4 ride to visit one of the famous architectural desert sculptures by German Artist Hannsjorg Voth.

Where to stay in Todra Gorge

We can organize accommodation near Todra of a level that fits your needs and budget from the simple and authentic Berber stay to a higher level of accommodation with pools and a taste of Saharan luxury, or environmentally aware eco-lodges which still allow for day visits to the gorge. For those who want to get closer to the outdoors, we can organize wild camping and cooking trips, or glamping options in the local area. Stargazers, photographers and those who treasure the feeling of getting back to nature love this option!

Morocco tour from Casablanca to Marrakesh via Chefchaouen, Fes and Desert

The tour was absolutely wonderful. We were able to see a little bit of everything (Casablanca, ruins, Chefchaouen, Fes, Sahara, Todras Gorge and the Atlas Mountains, and Marrakesh) and had very nice, thorough tour guides throughout. Ismail was the absolute best driver/guide we could have asked for - we were so lucky to have had him. He went out of his way to ensure we were comfortable and having a good time. He was incredibly respectful and polite the whole trip and accommodating with help anyone needed. The drives were very long and Ismail was very efficient, professional and never late - but incredibly patient as needed. He joined us whenever possible, which added so much to the experience as he gave insight into customs and history when possible. Having Ismail as our driver definitely made this a great tour - he is so kind, personable, (we had lots of nice conversations with him on the drive!) and a wonderful driver. We hope to see him again soon on another trip to Morocco!! One thing I would suggest for the tour is to add time/appointment (or the option to) for a Hammam as we ended up not being able to visit one this time around.

8 days from Casablanca discovering Chefchaouen, Fes, Desert & Marrakech

Cultural morocco tours proved a good decision for our private tour. We were a couple and a bit unsure of the safety , comfort and culture of a North African country Morocco is a hidden modern gem of North Africa! Safe and clean with excellent roads even in remote areas The biggest hit was Ismail our driver, who was an amazing human being ! The 6 seater vehicle given to us was sturdy and comfortable. Although on the 7 day tour ,stay at each place was a night only, never felt rushed or late Due to excellent driving and schedule . Some of the hotels /RIADs were hits and a couple of them misses . Am sure the agency will ameliorate this by asking customers preferences for comfort / adventure / style of travel . Communication over Tour radar platform was excellent and accurate

We thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful tour. While all the team were very responsive and communicative and helpful in general, our wonderful driver Hassn really took care of us and went the extra mile to make sure we were safe an happy, He also made us laugh and created a lovely atmosphere to travel in, This tour was a real treat and an insight into the kindness and hospitality of the Moroccan people. The local tour-guides were a bit variable but I apart from that a very good value tour and a great way to get a taste of Morocco.

Marrakech To Merzouga 3 days camel ride Tour

Marrakech To Merzouga 3 days camel ride

Me and my friends embarked on a private tour which turned out to be wholesome. Our driver, Abdul, met us in the morning with the greatest smile on his face and proved to be an amazing guide and friend. Abdel was also an incredible guide when he joined us at the canyon. They both explained us all about Morocco and were truly an added value to the tour. The stops were breathtaking, and the landscape got more beautiful at every turn. The camel ride was incredibly fun and entertaining, and the Sahara dunes were unreal. The stays were very comfortable, both the hotel and the camping, and dinner/breakfasts were excellent. I had mentioned that it was my birthday and the guys prepared me a birthday cake, singing and dancing around the campfire. That was an unbelievable surprise which I would have never expected and it really made the day even more special. I think this also shows how kind and thoughtful the whole team is and the care they put in organising this experience. The drive back was also enjoyable, as we made multiple stops and could once again appreciate the beauty of Moroccan landscapes. Overall, this was truly an unforgettable experience that we will always cherish. As Abdel would say, more than a tour, this was a road trip with friends

Timeless Morocco Tour

Timeless Morocco

Our tour was well organised and covered great examples of Morocco’s diverse landscapes and cities with knowledgable guides in each location. Yassin our main guide was terrific throughout. The tour covered a huge distance in relatively short time and pretty fast paced. The hotels were fine but some of the riads simply stunning. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour.

Great tour, enjoyed really enjoyed myself. The various local guides at the different locales were very knowledgeable and provided good information of the area Shoutout to our guide Tarik and driver Mohammad who ensure the whole tour went about smoothly A few points to improve, the location of the Hotel in Casablanca was not ideal. The one In Tangier was pretty bad as it was quite a distance from town. Main problem with both is lack of food options near the hotel in the evening. Accommodations during the rest of the tour was great

What people love about Todra Gorge Tours

Ali was an incredible guide and I would thoroughly recommend booking with Morocco Joy Travel. We travelled with our 2 kids (8 &9) and Ali made it such a wonderful adventure for our family. He was so warm and kind, knowledgeable and thoughtful. We opted for the luxury accommodation and it surpassed our expectations. There was a lot of driving but the vehicle was very comfortable and Ali was so knowledgeable and a pleasure to tour with. We are left with wonderful memories of sunsets, fossil digging, sand dune exploring, camel riding, drum playing, spectacular scenery, delicious meals…thank you Ali…we cannot wait to visit again!
An incredible tour with an incredible guide (Zouhair)! My first experience with G Adventures and I was not disappointed. I only wish I could have stayed longer!
I recently returned from a fabulous tour with Morocco Joy.....4days/3 nights Sahara Experience. Never having travelled solo before, I was a little concerned about this new experience. I needn't have worried at all. Ali put me at ease from the first moment I got in his van. He was very knowledgeable and did everything he could to make my tour the tour of a lifetime. He even went so far as to help me take photos of a toy my young granddaughter asked me to bring with me and take photos of as we traveled around the country. We were in fits of laughter when Ali tried to teach the doll how to drive. My granddaughter and I will never forget this trip! Thanks, Ali.

Camel Caravan

There’s something fantastic about camels that you never really understand until standing right in front of one. They’re big, over 6′ tall at the shoulders, and nearly 2/3 of a ton. They’re smart, remember kindness, and enjoy an affectionate scratch or pet (think of them as really big dogs with saddles). They’re also surprisingly photogenic and often will look right into the camera, ready for their closeup.

If you think riding a camel is easy, you’d be right. It’s getting onto it is the adventure. You don’t mount a camel like you do a horse. The camels start by sitting down until you get in the saddle. That’s when the fun begins. Then, as the camel stands, its back legs straighten first, pitching the rider forward, then the front legs straighten, pitching the rider back. Then, when it kneels, it’s the same process in reverse. So remember, saddle up, lean back, then lean forward.

Deserts and Empires

Essential morocco, through the lens: morocco, hammams, riads & beyond, ghost tour of fez.

Now, for the first time in Morocco, SaharaTrek offers its exclusive guided Ghost Tour of Fez. Starting after dinner and just before sunset, you’ll get rare access to the places and stories left out of the tourist brochures.

Slavery was abolished in Morocco in 1925, but its shadow still lingers in the Fez Medina at the Slave Market. During the day, they auction animal hides from the tannery in the market. In the afternoon, it’s a market for used clothes. But it’s when the market is empty at night that you can faintly hear the wails of despair from enslaved Christians taken by the Barbary Pirates or the sub-Saharan Africans brought over the Salt Road.

A short 2 hours after the tour starts and the darkest of the night has set in, you’ll be guided back to your Raid for the rest of the evening.

Guided Walking Tours

Our walking tours give you the unique opportunity to truly connect with the local communities, interact with friendly locals, and witness their daily way of life up close. Feel the city’s rhythm as you stroll through the colorful markets, savor the tantalizing aromas while sampling traditional cuisine , and marvel at the stunning architecture that tells the story of centuries past.

Our expert guides will lead you through the labyrinthine medinas, sharing fascinating stories and historical insights along the way. They’ll take you off the beaten path, introducing you to local artisans, craftsmen, and storytellers who will enrich your understanding of Moroccan culture.

The best part? You’ll have the freedom to pause, take photos, and explore each city at your own pace while you soak in the ambiance. You’ll get all the sights and sounds without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. And with a knowledgeable guide by your side, you’ll have a safe and enjoyable experience that you won’t soon forget.

Walking also provides a more sustainable and eco-friendly way to explore the cities, reducing your carbon footprint while immersing yourself in the authentic atmosphere of Morocco.

So, if you’re seeking an immersive adventure that goes beyond the surface, lace-up your walking shoes and discover the heart and soul of this captivating country, one step at a time.

Hammams have been an integral part of Moroccan life for centuries, serving as communal spaces for cleansing and relaxation. Stepping into a hammam is like taking a step back in time. The intricately tiled buildings are designed around three principal rooms – the cool room to undress, the hot, humid room for sweating, and the massage room. As you move through the different chambers, the experience envelops all your senses.

After the massage, you’ll rinse off in the cool room, emerging refreshed and Brand New from this ancient cleansing ritual. Many hammams have additional services like clay masks, herbal treatments, and hair treatments to further the pampering experience.

While the hammam is an indulgent personal ritual, it’s also a social gathering place. You may find yourself amid whole families, groups of women visiting together, or men’s only sessions. Don’t be intimidated – the friendly attendants will guide you through every step.

For the complete cultural immersion, SaharaTrek will book you an afternoon at a top-rated hammam. After a day of adventure, it’s a welcome bit of rest and recovery.

Whether you visit for an hour or spend an entire day, experiencing a traditional Moroccan hammam allows you to participate in a ritual that has transcended generations. Leave every ounce of stress behind and embrace this extraordinary treatment’s warmth, aromatics, and purification.

Hassan II Mosque

As part of a SaharaTrek tour, you can visit the Hassan II Mosque and learn about its history and significance. You will also have the opportunity to explore the interior of the mosque, which is open to non-Muslims. Our tour guides will ensure that you have a respectful and informative visit.

Moroccan Cooking Class

One of the best ways to fully immerse yourself in Morocco’s culinary traditions is by taking a cooking class. Roll up your sleeves and prepare to get hands-on as you learn the techniques and ingredients that make Moroccan food so distinctive and delicious.

From the market, you’ll head to a traditional riad or home kitchen to begin cooking. Prepare a chermoula marinade fragranced with saffron, garlic, and lemon to marinate fish or meat. Chop aromatics like cilantro and parsley to mingle with spices like cumin, ginger, and turmeric for vegetable tagines or salads.

Learn how to knead and roll outriru dough for the flakiest msemmen or flatbreads. Master the patient art of folding plump cigars of vermicelli and spiced meat to make bastilla, Morocco’s iconic savory-sweet pie.

Whether you’re a novice home cook or a seasoned chef, you’ll walk away from this cooking class with a deeper appreciation for the layered, labor-intensive processes and signature flavors of Moroccan cuisine. More importantly, you’ll have the skills and knowledge to recreate these delectable dishes at home for family and friends.

Self-Guided Adventure

Discover Morocco’s vibrant and exotic shopping world, where centuries-old traditions meet contemporary trends. Morocco offers a unique and unforgettable shopping experience for travelers with its bustling markets, artisanal craftsmanship, and a kaleidoscope of colors and scents.

Medina Souks: A Shopper’s Paradise

  • Discover handmade rugs, intricate ceramics, dazzling lamps, and intricately designed textiles.
  • Bargain to your heart’s content and immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of these ancient marketplaces.

Traditional Souvenirs: Moroccan Keepsakes

  • Handcrafted leather goods such as bags, belts, and shoes are also popular choices.
  • Don’t forget to pick up some argan oil, known for its nourishing properties and unique to Morocco.

The Art of Haggling: Bargaining Tips

  • Haggling is a cultural norm in Morocco, so embrace it with a smile and negotiate for the best prices.
  • Be friendly and respectful during negotiations, and don’t be afraid to walk away if a deal doesn’t feel right.
  • First Price: That’s the price you’ll be given with a smile. It’s more of a suggestion (or wishful thinking) for the shopkeeper.
  • First Offer: Knowing how much you want to pay is essential. A good way to educate yourself is to stop by the Centre Artisanal (a government-run, no-haggle shopping plaza). The prices and quality are the price to beat, so make your first offer lower than what you’ve seen there.
  • The Yelling Phase: The shopkeeper will become outraged at the price you’ve offered and begin to toute the quality of the products and how he won’t make any money at the price you offered and will make a counteroffer.
  • Make or Break: As the asking price decreases, the offering price increases (but not past what you want to spend). At this point, you’d better be sure you want that item at the price you say because if the shopkeeper agrees, then you MUST pay the price you offered (it’s offensive not to).
  • During serious big-ticket haggling, you’ll be offered mint tea from the shopkeepers, a gesture of goodwill during negotiations and a way to keep you longer. There’s a joke: every glass of tea adds $10 to the purchase price.

Fashion and Jewelry: Moroccan Elegance

  • Don’t miss the vibrant kaftans, jalabiyas, and djellabas, traditional Moroccan garments with modern twists.

Artisan Workshops: A Glimpse into Craftsmanship

  • On our guided tours, you’ll visit artisan workshops and witness the skillful creation of Moroccan goods.
  • Learn about the art of pottery, weaving, metalwork, and woodworking from skilled craftsmen.
  • Purchase one-of-a-kind pieces directly from the artisans.

Markets by Region: Diversity in Shopping

  • Explore the uniqueness of each region’s markets, from thuya wood and argon oil in Essaouira to hand-tanned leather in Fez.
  • Discover regional specialties, like hand-painted ceramics in Safi or carpets in the Middle Atlas region.

Shopping in Morocco is an adventure in itself, where you can immerse yourself in this enchanting country’s rich culture, artistry, and history. Morocco offers a shopping experience that will leave you with not just souvenirs but lasting memories of a unique and diverse culture.

Taste of Morocco

As you tour the cities, keep your eyes (and noses) on the lookout for some of the specialties Morocco offers, and you’ll regret missing them.

  • Shebbakia: pasta ribbons with hot honey and grilled sesame seeds, commonly found during Ramadan.
  • Briouats: sweet filo pastry with a savory filling, like a miniature pasilla.
  • M’hencha: almond-filled pastry coils, often covered in honey or syrup.
  • Cornes de gazelle: marzipan-filled, banana-shaped pastry horns.
  • Pastilla: sweet pigeon or chicken pie with cinnamon and filo pastry (a specialty of Fes).
  • M’laoui: flat griddle bread from dough sprinkled with oil, rolled out, and folded several times.
  • Bissara: thick beans soup, usually served with olive oil and cumin.
  • Olives: come in numerous varieties,
  • Almonds, walnuts, and dates.
  • Bread: almost always round like a cake and tears easily by hand. It’s usually homemade and cooked in the public oven.

Todra Gorge

Being stuck between a rock and a hard place is a sublime experience in the Todra Gorge, where a 300m-deep fault splits the orange limestone into a deep ravine at some points just wide enough for a crystal-clear river and single-file trekkers to squeeze through. The road from Tinerhir passes green palmeraies (palm groves) and Berber villages until, 15km along, high walls of pink and grey rock close in around the road. The approach is thrilling, as though the doors of heaven were about to close before you.

Todra Gorge / 1 Day discover the Todra Gorge

Todra gorge one day tour, todra gorge / 1 day.

todra gorge tour

YOUR ITINERARY

  • Morning departure from your hotel or riad in Ouarzazate. Begin your day by visiting Skoura, then take the road to the Todra Gorge.
  • Visit the Todra Gorge. The Todra Gorge is a canyon in the eastern part of the High Atlas Mountains in southern Morocco near the town of Tinghir. Both the Todra River and Dades River have carved out the cliff-sided canyons. The drive is scenic along newly built roads. Drive past the mouth of the Gorge and up to the villages of Ait Hani and Tamtattouchte. The Todra Gorge extends from the village of Tamtattouchte to Tinghir. The Todra Gorge, with cliffs rising dramatically up to 300m on each side of a narrow corridor, is a spectacle with its gigantic rock walls changing color to create magical effects with the sunlight. In the morning, when the sun permeates through the bottom of the gorge, the rock changes from pink rose to deep ochre gradually through the rest of the day.
  • A day at the Todra Gorge offers the option of extreme climbing, hiking, and sightseeing. A fun and strenuous hike involves a three hour loop used by donkeys and mules heading north of the main gorge to Tizgui, home of palmeries and ancient kasbahs. For a lighter hike, try the Petit Gorge entering at the mouth of the gorge. The mouth is an enclosed section with overhanging cliffs and is the most dramatic scenery in the gorge. Climbing in the Todra Gorge is an unforgettable experience.
  • Lunch at the foot of the Todra Gorge at a charming Moroccan cafe.
  • Another option is to have lunch inside the Todra Gorge, or at one of the restaurants beneath the overhanging cliffs with a panoramic view. After lunch, continue by car, hike, or ride horseback to explore the surrounding area and Berber villages. Afternoon options can include a visit to the picturesque village of Tamtattouchte with gorgeous red earthen houses located at the other end of the gorge.
  • Sunset return to Ouarzazate.

Over thousands of years, the river Oued Todra had cut this imposing canyon into the mountain range on its way south. Particularly worth seeing in this area is the last part of the canyon. Wow! Those canyons are simply stunning!! A couple of questions – what month did you travel there? Also, is traveling by campervan a thing here, or better to have a daily rental car and stay at hotels? (Wondering what is culturally and logistically possible).

' src=

I love the dichotomy of the red rocks and green oasis in Todra. It reminds me a lot of canyons in southern California where you will have dry, arid desert and all of a sudden come upon palm trees. (usually golf courses these days). Of course, the red limestone is even that much more dramatic. Spending a season climbing the routes along the canyon seems fascinating. It looks like there will be endless options and you could find ways to always be climbing in the shade.

' src=

This looks INCREDIBLE!! Your photos are stunning. I’ve never been to Morocco, but when I do this will definitely be on my list. I love finding unmarked treks and exploring on two feet. The massive desert canyons and sand coloured homes are super cool – looks almost extra-terrestrial 🙂

' src=

Wow what a beautiful place this is! I love the look of the Todra Canyon. I’m sure it was a spectacular drive through to see such high, beautiful cliffs.

' src=

I love the Moroccan stone desert! I’ve been to Tata and Aka and just loved it. Your post reminds me very much of that trip, but the Todra Canyon looks much more impressive than what I saw. Morocco is like a fairytale.

' src=

Tinghir looks beautiful and I’m in awe of the rock formations of the Todra gorge. The colour is so vivid. I’ve always wanted to visit Marrakech but I will definitely be putting Tinghir on my list 😊

Todra Gorge

Last updated on: May 27, 2017 03:46 by Dseert Morocco Adventure | Reading: 3 minutes | Published: May 27, 2017 03:46 | Category: Morocco

tinghir, morocco

The Todgha Gorge is a canyon in the eastern part of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, about 14 km from the town of Tinghir. The canyon is approximately a 6-hour drive from the touristic city of Marrakech on the way to the Sahara.

If you intend to be amazed and stunned by what you will see on your next travel, your destination should be the Todra Gorge. It offers a valley of limestone rocks formed by numerous generations by the river of Dades and Todra. The daylight is unbelievably beautiful with the rays of the sun dancing on the palm trees clustering on the gorge’s base. A day visit to this exquisite place will surely give you an unforgettable experience.

Staying overnight in Todra Gorge is no less than exceptional as you breathe the aroma of the almond and fruit trees nearby. It is fun to have an overnight stay in the outdoors to fully enjoy the atmosphere, although, in the small town called Tinghir , there are some small hostels. If you choose to stay in the latter, you are assured of hospitable and warm people to welcome you. They are situated right in the middle of the rugged landscape making the overnight stay filled with sounds and sight of the Todra Gorge but in a more comfortable manner.

The Todra Gorge is 7 hours away from Marrakech and is situated in that deserted part of the landscape. Tours here will usually open you to the history of the Berbers who are occupying the place and the history of this place. It usually tells how the place was formed and today become beautiful canyons.

You sure would not want to miss exploring the beautiful rocky area and seeing the shapes created by the water and temperatures like a piece of art. An amazing sight that anyone can behold. Some travelers will visit this location for hiking and climbing the canyon. Climbing is truly enticing especially when you get a glimpse of high rock formations. But climbers must at all times climb along with expert guides who can provide them with guidance and instruction on how to successfully tackle those canyons.

Both day and night, the Todra Gorge is stunning. The sunlight gives it a very vivid sky treating you to an amazing view of its landscapes. The night on the other hand offers stars that make the river sparkle in the moonlight in the middle of water and rocks. Whether you will only stay for just a few hours or you intend to be there overnight, the gorge has unlimited views to offer. It is a truly awe-inspiring creation of nature that has continued to amaze people from one generation to the next.

How to visit The Todra (Todgha) gorge in Morocco

In the eastern part of the Atlas Mountains, you will find the Todra gorge , a piece of wonderful natural beauty that you should not miss during your road trip to Morocco.

The red-colored gorge is known for its dramatic cliffs (sometimes up to 300 meters high) and unique rock formations, which have been carved over time by the Todgha River. But the desolate landscapes, palm oases, Berber tents, and picturesque villages with mud houses in the area are also worth coming to this part of the Atlas.

You can do beautiful walks and it is also a true paradise for climbers and photographers. A fantastic place to visit and especially to spend the night there.

TIP: Many people pass by here on a tour or on their way somewhere else, and don’t spend enough time there. We really recommend if you have time, staying there for a night and discovering the area better.

The Todra Gorge or Todgha Gorge is a must-see in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. It is located in the Todra valley near the rather large city of Tinghir and the famous part is more than 15 kilometers or 9 miles long.

If you have your own car ( check here for the prices to rent a car in Morocco ), it is about a 6-hour drive from Marrakech. On the way, you will also encounter Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate. You can do this as a day trip, but it is more fun to spend the night in Aït Benhaddou and then at the Todra gorge. From Aït Benhaddou or Ouarzazate, it is about a 3-hour drive.

Read more: Itinerary for a 10-day or two-week tour in Morocco

If you come from the desert near Merzouga , as we did, it is also about a 3-hour drive to the Todra gorge. From the royal city of Fez , it is a bit further to drive and it will take you almost 8 hours.

If you have not rented a car in Morocco, you can also book a tour. There are various possibilities. You can book multi-day tours from Marrakech to Fez or from Fez to Marrakech where you also visit the Todra gorge. Another possibility is to book a day tour from Ouarzazate.

The disadvantage of these tours is that you do not have much time for the gorge itself and in this article, we just want to show you why you should not pass quickly here, but really take your time to discover the area and also spend the night.

What to do in the Todra gorge

Visit the todra gorge in morocco.

The Todra gorge is of course the biggest attraction here and the reason why most people come to this region. Thousands of years ago, the gorge was carved out by the river. Then it was still wild, now it has become a small stream. At the narrowest part, you are completely surrounded by towering cliffs. Beautiful to see!

On the way to the gorge, you don’t see much traffic and movement, but once you get to the narrowest part, the gorge is filled with stalls, tourists, hikers, cars, and some tourist vans that drive through the gorge. All on the same road, so watch out.

TIP : If you want to avoid the worst crowds, come early in the morning or early evening. Then most of the tours and tourists disappeared. Then the sun also provides the most beautiful shades.

Todgha Gorge Gorge Morocco Road

The sheer walls and structures of the Todra Gorge are perfect for climbers. Beginners but especially more experienced climbers, everyone can indulge themselves here. There are hundreds of climbing routes to choose from.

It is best to book a guide who accompanies you during the climbing and who knows the region very well. Yet another possibility is to do a day trip mountaineering, where you hike, climb and scramble away from the standard hiking trails.

You can also rent climbing equipment from the providers of these tours, such as Aventure Verticale Maroc.

In addition to climbing, you can also go hiking near the Todra gorge, it is beautiful. The ideal way to see the less touristy side of the Todra gorge . There are several hikes that you can do yourself but do not underestimate them. Be well prepared or go out with a local guide.

TIP: If you would like to hike in the area, keep in mind that it can get very hot during the day. So take plenty of water with you and preferably leave early in the morning or earlier in the late afternoon. Then calculate how long you have to walk approximately so that you certainly don’t have to look for your way in the dark.

We did a beautiful walk without a guide for 3 to 4 hours, which we will talk about in full in the next point. If you prefer a guide, we can recommend the following.

Hike through the Todra gorge

We chose to do this nice walk of 3 to 4 hours that takes you above the Todra gorge. We did the hike with our children aged 11 and 12, so it is also possible for families whose children are used to walking.

Drive to the parking lot just past the canyon. There you will see some concrete stairs on the other side of the road. They form the start of the walk and then lead you along the paths that the nomads also use with their donkeys.

Nomads Todra Gorge Hike Donkey

First, you go up for a long time (with one part that is really steep). Once you are at the top, you can enjoy some beautiful views . And then you also pass a nice nomad family who will offer you a cup of tea. Even if they don’t literally ask, it is nice to give them a small compensation. This tea is also the only thing you will find along the way, so be sure to bring plenty of water.

Todgha Gorge Hike Morocco

Then you walk back down towards the valley. Once you get to the village , you can walk through the landscaped gardens (full of irrigation canals) back through the gorge towards your car.

TIP: The walk itself is not difficult to find, but up there everything looks a bit alike. Without maps.me we find it almost impossible. Download the walk so you can view it offline because there is almost no mobile coverage. Look for these coordinates 31.589090, and -5.5968 in the app so you can find the hike. Below you can see an image of the hike in the Todra Gorge.

Best places to spend the night at the Todra gorge

Unfortunately, most people don’t stay very long in the Todra gorge. But if you want to take a nice walk (in the morning or in the afternoon), or also want to discover the other highlights in the area, we really recommend that you stay overnight at the Todra gorge.

We stayed at a nice guest house La Petite Gorge , 2 km from the Todra gorge, in the nearby village. Very friendly people and simple but nice rooms. In the morning you can eat your breakfast on the terrace with a beautiful view over the mountains.

La Petite Gorge Overnight Todra Gorge Morocco

Do you really want something special? Then Auberge La Festival is the place to be. This eco-lodge is located in the Todra gorge surrounded by nature. Built with natural materials, the lodge blends completely into its surroundings. But the rooms are very special, as they are carved into the rock and you sleep in a kind of cave. Book in time because this place is popular.

TIP: If you have a little more time, consider staying two nights in this area. Driving here usually takes more time than you would think, so you can use an extra day. You can then choose to spend the night at the Todra gorge, in Tinghir , or at the Dadès gorge.

todra gorge tour

Visit the Dades gorge

The Todra gorge is perhaps the most famous of the two, but if you have enough time you really should visit the Dadès gorge. From Tinghir it is an hour’s drive via the main road to the start of the gorge, near the village of Boumalne du Dadès. There is also a nice local market there on Wednesdays.

You can also take a shortcut through the mountains, but that is only possible with a 4×4. If you don’t have one, you can also book this 4WD adventure tour from Todra to Dades. If you prefer not to drive here yourself, you can also book a tour from Ouarzazate.

The most famous point of the gorge is the spectacularly winding way up . For the best view, go to this point , where you can also drink or eat something while enjoying the views.

Dades Gorge Morocco Road View

The landscape is full of red rocks, mud kasbahs, and green trees. You can also do several beautiful walks in this landscape. You can do most of them without a guide (like with Monkey Fingers), but you can also book a guided walking tour that takes you to the most beautiful places in the Dadès gorge.

What is the best time to visit the Todra and Dades Gorge?

Unlike many other places in Morocco, the Atlas Mountains are much more pleasant in the summer. So from April to early October is the best time to visit the Todgha and Dadès gorge. Then there is little rain and no too high temperatures.

During the winter is also perfect, but then you have an almost daily chance of some rain.

We visited the Todra Gorge in September and had good weather, although there was a kind of fog so that we could see the views a little less well.

Any questions about the Todra gorge? Please let us know and we will be happy to help you! Have fun traveling!

Todra gorge: 7 reasons the day trippers are missing out.

Todra Gorge - 7 Reasons The Day Trippers Are Missing Out!

We all know that swooping in and out on a tick-off-and-on-to-the-next-one coach tour, is no way to see any part of any country.

But this never applied more so than to Todra Gorge in Morocco – one of my absolute favourite places in this country and, in my opinion, one of its most underrated too.

And that’s because, for most tourists, this is nothing more than a quick day trip at best – a rushed visit as part of a tour to somewhere else – normally the Sahara desert at Merzouga.

But driving simply up and through the gorge, perhaps getting out to snap a photo and shop for a souvenir, before they hop back onto the bus, means these tourists will never know how amazing this area really is.

An absolute must on any Morocco travel itinerary, I ended up spending far longer in this gorge area than the 1 night I expected and, ever since, have wanted to share with you why you should do the same!

So here it is, one of my top Morocco tips, because trust me, those day trippers to Todra Gorge really are missing out!

Where is & what is todra gorge.

Morocco, Todra Gorge, Me

Before we dive into why I loved the Todra Gorge area quite so much, perhaps I need to explain a little about where exactly this place is and what you can expect there.

Situated in the High Atlas mountains of Morocco, the Todra Gorges are a series of deep-sided canyons carved out of the eastern side of this range by fast-flowing rivers on their way down to the coastal plains.

Offering incredible desert scenery and dramatic cliff-like terrain, snaking trails lead through these high limestone wadis, along which are strung traditional Berber villages and palmeraies.

Offering some amazing hiking and photography opportunities in dry season, the gorges in this area are also popular with rock climbers.

Save for the most famous canyon in the area – the mighty Todra Gorge – few tourists really explore this region and less still choose to spend more than 1 night here.

As such, tourism here is low level and the whole area feels delightfully uncommercialised and wonderfully authentic.

Set to a stunning natural backdrop, with a safe and slow-paced rural way of life, Todra Gorge is the perfect place to unwind and relax in Morocco, especially after time in the far more bustling and hectic destinations of Marrakesh and Fez .

It is one of a few gorge areas in Morocco – the other main one being Dades Gorge, which lies still to the west of the Todra, also within the High Atlas area.

Todra Gorge Facts!

Morocco, Todra, Gorge

Todra is actually the name given to the last 600m of the canyons as they wind down from the High Atlas mountains.

At this point, the base of the canyon in Todra Gorge remains very thin, but its 300m+ high walls give it a very dramatic formation, leading it to be called one of the most spectacular gorges in the world.

A river still runs through the canyon, which is fairly low-lying in the dry months, but can swell considerably in the wet season.

Nomadic herdsman are often to be seen in the area too and, at night, you’ll likely be treated to one of the most incredible starry night skies you’ve ever seen!

The nearest town to Todra Gorge is Tinerhir (sometimes spelt Tinghir), which sits on a major road and is therefore very easy to get to, especially from Marrakesh and Merzouga.

Slightly further away from the gorge is the city of Ouarzazate (which boasts the nearby film set location of Ait Ben Haddou), and which has even better transport connections and lies even closer to Marrakesh.

Learn more about getting to Todra Gorge later on in this article.

At this stage, it’s also worth pointing out that there is a small village of Ait Baha which lies almost at the mouth of the gorge.

With a few local guesthouses, a handful of places to eat and the most wonderful and welcoming atmosphere, this is the best place to base yourself here because, as I said in my introduction, if you don’t spend at least a couple of days at Todra Gorge, you really are missing out… and here’s why!

Todra Gorge: 7 Reasons The Day Trippers Are Missing Out!

#1 Todra Gorge Hike

Morocco, Todra Gorge, Hiking Trail

First up on this list of why day trippers are missing out when it comes to Todra Gorge, is the hiking.

If you read this blog regularly, you’ll know I love nothing more than a good old walk and that’s why I’m putting this one first.

Yep, Todra Gorge is a great place to go for a hike and, if you stay in the village of Ait Baha, you’re likely to be able to enjoy one right from the door of your accommodation.

The mouth of the gorge lies just 15 minutes by foot from the village, so walking up to and through the gorge is an easy and spectacular option.

But off the beaten track it is not.

In fact, this is where the day trippers drive, so if you really want to go and explore a little more, then I highly recommend the Loop Hike, which is a wonderful Todra Gorge hiking trail you can make unguided.

The trail takes around 4 hours and leads you from Ait Baha up through the Gorge, off on a path to your left by Auberge Le Festival hotel, and then up the canyon into the beautiful desert surrounds, before taking you back down again into the village in one big loop.

I highly suggest downloading maps.me before you embark on this hike as, if you’re anything like me you’ll a) get lost and b) not see another soul for hours – which when you’re hiking alone in the desert and the sun is starting to go down can be a little disconcerting!

But stick to the trail (if it’s not well-defined you’ve lost it, so stop and look around) and you’ll have the most wonderful experience, with some incredible landscapes and perhaps interaction with a nomadic family who live remotely out in these bare hills.

In true Moroccan style, they’ll probably invite you for tea, so take this opportunity for a wonderfully genuine cross-cultural interaction – didn’t I tell you this place was amazingly authentic!

Don’t set off on this trail without snacks, good walking shoes, sun protection and water however – there’s more about this in the packing section at the end of this article.

#2 Desert Scenery

Morocco, Todra Gorge, Desert

So yes, if you hadn’t guessed already from the above hiking point, another reason the day trippers to Todra Gorge are missing out is the fabulous scenery.

Honestly, if you’re a desert lover like me, you’ll find this place mind-blowing and if you’re a desert-lover and a photographer, well, I don’t know what you’ll blow, but it will be something big!

Because as that golden hour, hits the red canyon walls, the light display you’ll get is like nothing else… and that’s not even mentioning as the sunrise glow hits the green palmeraies or the milky way lights up overhead at night.

Honestly, day trippers won’t even get half a sense of just how majestical this place is, so if staring at some incredible natural landscapes is big on your Morocco travel list (and why wouldn’t it be), Todra Gorge is hard to beat!

#3 Todra Gorge Rock Climbing

Morocco, Todra Gorge, River

And sticking with the landscape theme, for those who really want to get amongst it, you’ll be delighted to know that Todra Gorge is a famous Moroccan rock climbing spot.

Slowly gaining quite a reputation, there’s now over 400 established climbing routes around here and several companies – operating out of Tinerhir/ Tinghir and Ait Baha – who can take you to them.

Some routes are well-bolted, while others are less so, meaning it’s a good idea to check with a local company first as to the latest maintenance reports.

It’s also a good idea to know a bit about difficulty levels and grades when it comes to rock climbing… and where you sit on the scale!

Aventures Verticales  are a good resource in this area and you can also rent climbing equipment from them or take guided trips.

And if rock climbing isn’t your thing, then you can enjoy a horse-riding experience in and around the gorge too.

#4 Support Sustainable Tourism

Morocco, Todra Gorge, Meal

Which leads me nicely onto my 4 th point about why day trippers are missing out when they rush into and out of Todra Gorge.

And that is because they’re neglecting the ability to support small-scale and sustainable local tourism.

As an under-developed tourism spot in Morocco, most businesses in the area are owned and run by locals and by staying in the village, eating near here, hiring a guide or buying something at a shop, you are supporting them.

Day trippers who bus into and out of Todra Gorge quickly, rarely support local businesses and are instead giving their money to larger tour agencies who operate out of bigger cities.

In these traditional and rural parts of Morocco, making a living can be hard and putting some money directly into local hands is a great reason to stay longer here and help support the community in a sustainable way.

#5 Stay in a Berber Village

Morocco, Todra Gorge, Kasbah Des Piramides

And one of the key ways to do this is to stay near Todra Gorge.

Yes you can stay in Tinerhir / Tinghir, but as a fairly large town some 15km from the gorge and along a major road, I’m not sure why you’d do this.

Instead, I recommend heading from Tinerhir to the village of Ait Baha, which you can easily do in a shared taxi for 10 MAD (if you wait for it to fill) or 50 MAD if you want a private ride.

Right by the gorge, this wonderful friendly, welcoming, safe and authentic Berber village boasts some incredible natural scenery and is the perfect place to soak in some traditional Moroccan culture.

And I can’t think of anywhere better to stay in Ait Baha than the wonderful Casa Rural – Kasbah Des Piramides.

This charming guesthouse is owned and run by a local family and offers incredible value with rooms and terraces that have some seriously epic views.

Breakfasts are included and delicious, wifi is good and the water is hot!

Plus the dinners here (including for vegetarians) were among the best I had in Morocco.

Ideal for budget travellers, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place and to return there too!

Get the best rates at Casa Rural – Kasbah Des Piramides here !

Otherwise, you can view other accommodation options in the area here .

#6 Palm Grove

Morocco, Todra Gorge, Palm Grove

And one of the main reasons I loved this place so much was because of the beautiful views it had over the palmeraies.

For those not in the know, palmeraies (or palm groves) are like communal gardens / farms that occupy a valley space in the desert gorges and make use of the natural waterways that flow through here to grow fruits and vegetables.

They are the bread basket of this desert land and their rich green foliage and naturally irrigated waterways make them stand out.

The example in Ait Baha is beautiful and the lady who owns Casa Rural – Kasbah Des Piramides wonderfully explained to me how everyone in the village owns their own plot and grows something different.

Taking time to stroll through this verdant oasis, past fig trees, date palms, tomato crops, alfalfa beds and many more crops, was absolutely magical as everyone working there stopped to say hello to me and chat in broken French.

Again a magnificent and wholly natural cultural exchange and insight.

Visiting, snapping, learning about and admiring the palmeraies is one of the most fascinating things about Morocco travel and something day trippers to Todra Gorge likely just miss out on totally.

Morocco, Todra Gorge, Waterfall

And lastly, the major thing day trippers miss out on when they swoop in and out of Todra Gorge is the opportunity to chill.

For this is honestly one of the most relaxing, unwinding and enjoyable places to chill in Morocco; a place where local life oozes by as the sun lazily shifts overhead.

Groups of local women sit on steps on the late afternoon to share stories of the day, while children ride past on bikes and men smoke together outside shops.

Everyone says hello and waves, asks you where are from and invites you for a tea in this village where Moroccan hospitality is at its finest.

On my way to find my hostel, 3 separate people pointed me in the right direction (without being asked to) and the whole time here I felt incredibly safe.

Days spent staring at the view from the roof terrace went by, as casual strolls through the palmeraies and to the gorge became daily routines.

Those rushing in and out will get to experience nothing of this peaceful and laidback desert community vibes, as hours shift into days, days into weeks and the remote and offgrid nature of this desert place slowly seeps under your skin.

So I hope that’s given you an idea of why you should definitely spend more than a day in Todra Gorge and if I have convinced you to do that, here’s a quick travel guide to help you further…

Todra Gorge Mini Travel Guide

How to Travel to Todra Gorge?

Morocco, Todra Gorge, Road In

The easiest way to get to Todra Gorge and the village of Ait Baha is to take a shared taxi from the town of Tinerhir / Tinghir.

These leave from the Grand Taxi station near the hospital in the centre of Tinerhir / Tinghir and take around 20 minutes.

If you’re happy to wait, the shared taxi rate for a full vehicle is 10 MAD, otherwise the full car costs 50 MAD.

To get to Tinerhir / Tinghir you can either get a bus from Rissani to the east (if you’re coming from Merzouga) or from Ouarzazate or Marrakesh in the west.

If you’re coming from destinations further afield, such as Casablanca or Agadir , you’ll need to get a bus to Marrakesh and then change onto a different bus from there.

As always in Morocco, I recommend the bus companies CTM and Supratours , who both have regular services across the country.

Otherwise, if you’re looking to get from Marrakesh to Todra Gorge as part of a tour, these guided tours will stop by the gorge on their way to the desert… although you’ll be counted as a day tripper!

Perhaps better, therefore, are longer tours across Morocco, which do involve an overnight stay in Todra Gorge.

When To Visit?

Morocco, Todra Gorge, Lorry

There’s no question, the best time to visit Todra Gorge is during the dry months between March and October.

Within this period, the spring months of March – April and autumn months of September – October are the best, as the weather is dry and warm, but not too hot for hiking.

Todra Gorge weather in the summer can be extremely hot and unbearable – this is the desert after all!

Learn more about the best time to visit Morocco overall here.

Best Things to Do in Todra Gorge?

Morocco, Todra Gorge, Ait Baha

I’ve already discussed this in detail above, but as a quick round-up, the best things to do in Todra Gorge revolve around the natural world and beautiful landscape here.

  • Hiking, horse-riding and rock climbing
  • Photographing, view-staring and chilling!

Where to Stay?

Morocco, Ait Baha, Guesthouse

As you know, my advice is absolutely to stay in the wonderful Berber village nearest to the gorge, that is Ait Baha.

And within this village, I can’t recommend the locally-owned Casa Rural – Kasbah Des Piramides enough.

Clean, comfortable, authentic and well-priced, with the loveliest hosts and the best views, this place is an absolute winner.

I dare you not to extend your stay!

Safety and Wellbeing Tips

Morocco, Todra Gorge, Donkeys

As a solo female traveller, safety when travelling alone in remote areas is also big on my radar.

But I’m glad to say I felt very safe in Ait Baha, even when hiking alone.

As always, I just suggest not walking out alone at night however and definitely ensuring you have sufficient maps and supplies when going hiking.

Things To Pack for the Gorge

Morocco, Todra Gorge, Me and Ait Baha

A set of warmer clothes are definitely something I’d advise for your evening in Todra Gorge as nights here can get quite fresh.

I highly advise

  • Waterproof / windproof coat
  • Thermal Fleece

You also don’t want to forget about some great photo-kit to capture your amazing desert experience.

I recommend

  • Sony A6000 mirrorless camera
  • GoPro Hero 8 for any hiking / horse-riding / rock climbing!

Like I’ve mentioned before, I also recommend taking a travel water filter bottle with you to Morocco, so you can turn any freshwater into safe drinking water – a saving grace for the environment and your health.

My Life Straw Go Water Filter Bottle was ideal for my Morocco travels, especially in Todra Gorge when I could fill my bottle from the river!

Hello. I agree with you 100% I’ve done both. I am planning on going back. How did you book your place to stay? I can’t find it on any site. Are they often full? Thx.

Hi Ivan, wonderful to hear you are heading back to Todre Gorge – loved that spot!

I’m wondering if the lovely place I stayed in Ait Baha has perhaps become another covid casualty, as I booked using the link I put in the article. If that’s not working (which it seems it isn’t), maybe try searching Booking.com.

Best of luck and happy travels, Steph 🙂

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
